The day ending with a deadly shooting. Officials confirmed that hundreds of vehicles formed a pro trump caravan and drove into portland. Police respond ed to fights, disturbances and collisions involving members of the caravan and pedestrians but said they were not responding to all the incidents because they were spread out around the entire city. Police say the bulk of the caravan left about 8 30 portland time then about 15 a minutes later, officers responded to shots fired. The shooting was caught on video and some may find this video disturbing. Police say they arrived within about a minute and found small group gathered around a man on the street. That man died. Join iing me now, staff writer the washington post. Fez, welcome to you. What more are you hearing about this today. Yeah, so, actually the mayor and the police chief just media availability around noon to answer some questions around this. Police say theyve wrapped up their on scene investigation. We still dont know any details about a possible suspect and there was no victim i. D. At this point, so we dont know the name of the person who was shot and killed. But a couple of things as we reported, those caravans, those demonstrators, pro trump demonstrators seemed to have left approximately 15 minutes or so from the city before the shooting took place. Right . But is there consideration that every one of those had left or could there still be pockets around the city because police did say they were not able to get to everywhere where there were tensions. From being down here at time, there were some stragglers. The caravan, so many pick up trucks, semis. I dont think they came into the city. But there were just so many cars that were part of this group that certainly you had people sporadically spread out within the city. At least until i would say 10 00 or 11 00 p. M. So the possibility that there were stragglerstragglers, that possib possibility. Was there a presence of firearms . Were those Trump Supporters there in this caravan, do we know if there were guns, long guns, any presence of that that was visible . So the initial rally it was billed as a cruise through the city. Their plan was to go from the town center, a Shopping Center outside of portland, into or the roe would have had them circle portland through the freeways. Then they seemed to e redirect and some of the cars started to come in. At that point, you did see what were either paint baloguns or long guns, and they were encouraged to conceal carry. It wasnt widespread, but there was the possibility of everyones minds that people were carrying weapons. Do we know from where these Trump Supporters came . Were they all People Living in the portland area or was there a Wider Community that converged on portland . You know, it stretched beyond the city itself. People were coming from washington, from suburbs, from you know, salem at one point. You know, it was just sort of all around. But there was a general unfamiliarity with between protestors and the trump rally amid folks that were interacting. There were a lot of chants of get out of our city and why didnt you come before. So it wasnt some group that was already familiar to the black lives matter. So as much as this trump drive through group must have been organized given the way it all played out, those that were protesting, was that also organized, were there just disparate groups or individuals coming out to say as you said, hey, get out of our city . Its organized nightly through this loosely affiliated group. Groups that post on social media ask for people to come out. Thats been more of the planning, but protests nightly in portland. So the idea that youre going to have the pro trump crews coming to the city at the same time as the nightly black lives matter was happening, it was the perfect storm for a confrontation and you could tell things were heating up throughout the day. There was a confrontation on a highway on ramp. Confrontations on city streets then ultimately, this shooting. How much of portland is affected by this . Obviously there were many, many streets were affected, but any night of the protests that had been there for a couple of month ts now, how would a big part of the city is affected by this that they would start around the justice center, but its not like, so all of portland is affect aed by dual situations of covid and you know, these marches that are happeninging every night. And the way you notice it is how it is in the city. Were 9 00 a. M. Here and its somewhat deserted. I think thats been the reality for a few months now. Okay. Fez giving us the latest as you know it from the washington post. And again, you said that the portland News Conference in about three hours from now. Thank you. Tensions also simmering in washington, d. C. With protestors clashing with police and black lives matter plaza. Tear gas was deployed there. At least five were arrested. Meantime, the president ramping up his attacks against the mayor of portland firing off a series of tweets suggesting tensions in the city require federal intervention. Lets go to josh whos at the white house for us. Josh, with a good sunday to you, my friend, lets get to the back and forth on this. What do you know . Well, the president woke up this morning with law and order on his mind. He started tweeting before dawn this morning, disparaging the mayor of portland, echoing calls for him to resign and making it Crystal Clear the president is itching to send the National Guard into portland and other of what he calls as democratrun cities. The president tweeting our great National Guard can solve these problems in less than one hour. Going on, another tweet, the big backlash cannot be unexpected and saying bring in the National Guard. And up until now, alec, the approach from the administration has largely been to respect the autonomy of cities and states that dont want the federal government sending in the National Guard, with the administration having said, look, if federal employees, their safety is at risk, if federal property is vulnerable, theyre going to send in folks there like they did in fortland several months ago, but until now, theres been a reluctance to basically force this on to states and localities. Were hearing a slightly different tune on sunday shows. 94 days, perhaps now were going to act because someone was shot last night. You want to talk about Donald Trumps america, most of Donald Trumps america is peaceful. It is a, a democratled city and portland that were talking about this morning, who just yesterday, denied help once again from the federal government. I believe all options continue to be on the b table, specifically as we talk about portland. What weve seen in wisconsin, minnesota and other places, those governors stepping up, call ng the state National Guard in many instances, obviously, wisconsin, were sending in department of justice, Law Enforcement officer us as well. So when we talk about portland, again, they continue to refuse any type of federal assistance to bring that violent activity going on for almost 90 days now, a little over 90 days, to a close. And alec, whexwhen the homeld security chief talks about all o options on the table, he was being asked about the insurrection act, using troops to tamp down some of this unrest around the country, but all this playing out as the president is preparing to visit on tuesday, kenosha, wisconsin, not to go to try to calm down tensions or to be either to meet with the family necessarily, instead, the white house saying the president will be meeting with Law Enforcement in kenosha. Hes also going there apparently to some of the damage by the violence there the last few days. The white house saying the schedule is still being worked out, but as of now, we know of no plans for the president to meet with the family of jacob or activists who have been fighting alongside his family members, but the president did have one more related move on twitter this morning, which was not a tweet, but a like of someone elses tweet. That was a tweet thread in which someone said that kyle writtenhouse, the accused shooter in kenosha, is a good example of why i decided to vote for trump. We have asked the white house for some explanation of why the president would be trying to elevate that message, so far, we have not heard anything back from the white house on that, alex. Uhhuh. Okay. Thank you, josh, for that. That last part, particularly stunning. Josh was talking about it. More tensions in kenosha, wisconsin lasting night. More arrests after the day of largely peaceful protests and rallies following the shooting of jacob blake and murder of two protestors. Lets go to shoo keaquille brew from kenosha. Josh was laying it out. Youve confirmed it with the stops on the schedule for both the president and joe biden. How concerned is that community this could heighten tensions and what are you hear frg the folks there . Yesterday, we saw a massive protest here in kane shah. Well over close to 2,000 people marching through the streets. You saw political leaders, the family members and people from all across kenosha come out and they wanted their message to be on unity. They have been saying they want to show and put forward a peaceful scene. Yes, there was an arrest after the protest once curfew hit or after, but the large, what youre seeing here in kenosha is large ly the scene of peace, bu people are now wondering will that change with the arrival of Vice President biden as reported by the New York Times and then President Trump on tuesday as you just hear from josh there. We talked to some people about that, about their feelings. Listen to what our team heard. No, i dont think he should visit yet. Why . Again, i think we should just handle everything thats happening here. I feel like we havent completely finished the situation. We dont know whats going to happen. What could still possibly happen and the president visiting town takes a lot of resources that could be put some place else and i think it would be more beneficial for the city of kenosha to postpone any sort of visit like that. I think its fantastic. President trump won kenosha by about 280 votes. I think its going to value beganize the people who are sick and tired of whats gone on here and kenoshas going to vote for President Trump in the upcoming election. I think we need him here. We need strong leadership. People that are born and raised here are disgusted and angry with whats happen and we need that leadership here. You heard from the last gentlemen. What he said was accurate in terms of the margin that President Trump won this county in 2016. This is a county here that went for obama twice in 2008 and again in 2012 and then flipped the to President Trump who won it by less than one percentage point. This is going to be a place that yes, there are the serious tensions but its going to be a place of main focus in this election, in this battleground state of wisconsin. Also another tate thatstate tha focus for both campaigns. I want to give you the latest we know on blakes condition. I spoke to his uncle yesterday. He tells us that he is awake, alert. He says hes still not out of the woods yet. He has that long road to recovery ahead of him and the family is still asking for prayers as mr. Blake is still paralyzed from his waist down. Can i just say, those two interviews you conducted, what is an example of the divide in this country right now . I mean, it just showed the voters on both sides an it was spot on. Thank you very much for that. Joining me now is california congressman, ted lew. Congressman, welcome to you. Its always good to see you. You heard those two interviews from those two voters. Really, that articulated exactly the approach, the differing approaches of this country. Speak to the divide in this country right now. Why you think it exists. Thank you for that question. Donald trump is a sitting president of the united states. The violence and chaos were seeing in portland in kenosha, wisconsin is happening under his watch. After the Republican National convention, they featured a couple of protestors. Its no wonder then that a trump super supporter would cross state lines into kenosha, wisconsin and kill two protestors then today, we see donald trump liking a tweet that praised the person who did that. What we need is donald trump to deescalate tensions, condemn all violence including those caused by his own protestors and then we can start to heal as a nation. How much you bet thats going to happen . Unfortunately i dont think thats going to happen because Kellyanne Conway last week said that she believes violence and anarchy helps donald trump get reelected. Heres how that is nauseating to hear anyone say that kind of sentiment. Second, just not true. The American Public actually understand this trump chaos is happening under Donald Trumps watch. A new abc poll came out today showing Donald TrumpsApproval Ratings has dwrropped to 31 . So people understand that donald trump is the sitting president and he is the one that has to heal our nation right now. What about the Trump Administrations responses to the clashes in portland . The federal officials have been in portland before. Should they rest control of that city again, congressman . So, one thing weve learned is that the Trump Administration often makes things worse so when the department of Homeland Security was in portland ea earlier, they enflamed tensions instead of reducing them then what happened in portland is you had all these Trump Supporters with this massive caravan enter portland, itching for a fight. And so what we need, again, is to calm down the violence, calm down tensions. And we need donald trump to start doing that. He is the only one right now that can calm down his supporters and keep them from engaging in violence. But do you think that unrest and violence across this nation plays right into the president s hands as we portrays himself as the law and order candidate . Well, the polling actually doesnt show that because the American People understand that donald trump is the president. And if he is reelected, were just going to see things get worse and the American People understand that very crucial fact. And so what we need donald trump to do is to calm down tensions and has not benefitted specifically. As the people keeps on threatening to send in the National Guard to handle the unrest, i want you to listen to what joe biden said yesterday about how he would handle the situations if he becomes president. Ill be commander in chief and make sure that our National Guard and their families have the support and resources they need not one, not one who diverts more than one billion dollars in National Guard funding to pay for a boarder wall, but a promise you as president , ill never put you in the middle of politics, personal vendett vendettas. Ill never use the military as prop or private militia to violate the rights of federal citize citizens. Are those the words that americans want to see or hear . There are two things, one. There are peaceful protests. Then there are people who are n engaging in looting and violence. That needs to condemn. Joe biden has. Then at same time, local officials believe they need to call the National Guard based when they have the authority to do that. Right now, the local officials arent doing it because it often makes the decision worse and what we need to do is instead of police sizing this violence, we need the president to calm thinthin things down, calm down his supporters. Its not only good for him, but good for america. The big news this weekend, being the office of the director of National Intelligence announcing it is stopping the in person congressional briefings about Election Security and foreign election interference. This is just two months or so before the election. But the committees, theyll still have access to classified written intelligence reports. Lets take a listen to what john ratliff said this morning. I reiterated to congress, look, im going to keep you fully and currently informed as required by the law, but i also said were not going to do a repeat of what happened a month ago. When i did more than what was required at the request of congress to brief not just the oversight questions, but every member of congress. Within minutes of that, one of those briefings ending, another member of Congress Went to a number of different publications and leaked classified information. Again, for political purposes to create a narrative that isnt true. That russia is a Greater NationalSecurity Threat than china. Weve had a pandemic of information being leaked out of the Intelligence Community and im going to take the measures to make sure that stops. Sxwl is it just as easy for a written document to be leaked sm it would seem russia and china are threatening our election securities. Doesnt all of that warrant critical discussion and question ing from officials . The director is simply dying when he puts china and russia at the same level in terms of election interferns. Russia is interfering in our elections and theyre going to do so again. Public reporting in china isnt the same so he needs to stop making that false equivalence. Second, what is the Trump Administration hiding from congress and the American People . Basically, he just doesnt want to be asked questions and that is the whole point of oversight is to ask questions of the odni director. And third when he does these written finished products, that takes time. Were not going to get re rereal time information. Its critical he does these briefings or his subordinates do these briefings in congress and if he doesnt, i believe we should consider subpoenaing some of those officials then we need to put in [ inaudible ] other members that gives congressional subpoenas. Always good to see you. Thank you so much for weighing in.
