Good morning s. Welcome to weekends with alex witt. Alex is off today. President obama and the first lady are headed to india. They just left moments ago. We learned the president will cancel the end of his trip to india and fly to saudi arabia. Lets get to kristen welker. Talk to us about what led to this change and whats the purpose to it reporter good morning. The white house made the announcement that president obama is going to cut his trip short and travel to saudi arabia early this morning. The president is expected to meet with the new saudi king while in riyadh tuesday. Vice President Biden was initially slated to lead the delegation. In a statement, josh earnest stated as the president s and Vice President s travel schedules became clearer, we determined the window when the Vice President would be on the ground in riyadh coincided with the president s departure from india. Accordingly, we adjusted the schedule. The president will meet with king solomon and offer his condolences on behalf of the american people. It is uncommon for president obama to cut his travel plans short. Saudi arabia is one of americas closest allies in the region and a key partner against the fight against isis. It means the president will skip his plans to visit the taj mahal in india. He will still hold highlevel meetings. Lets stay in the region and talk about yemen. How has it affected u. S. Counter terrorism options reporter that remains to be seen. Senior Administration Officials tell me they are still assessing the situation in yemen. Of course the focus is on the United States Drone Program. President hadi had been a big supporter, had helped the United States carry out its Drone Program. The new rebels who have taken control are opposed to the Drone Program. They think it violates yemens sovereignty. Can the United States move forward with its Drone Program or have to change Counter Terrorism measures completely. All of that is still being worked out. They are watching this transition of power very closely. President hadi is still in power, even though he offered his resignation. The parliament has to agree to accept his resignation. That is something that will be decided likely by tomorrow. They are calling for it to be peaceful constitutional and are in close contact while all of this is going on. The first storm triggered storm warnings all the way up the east coast to new england. Heres what it looked like in philadelphia a short time ago. The roads have a thin cover of snow right now. But more is expected in the coming hours. It left texas blanketed in readybreaking snow. Amarillo got 14 inches in the past few days. It brought freezing rain to North Carolina before starting its run up the coast. Reporter it is going to cause big problems with snow sleet and freezing rain. The heaviest snow is expected in new england. Thats where msnbcs chris palone is joining me from andover, massachusetts, 20 miles north of boston. Good morning to you, chris. Chris, how much snow is expected there . More importantly, are people ready for it . Reporter yeah. I think theyre ready for it. Good morning. This area is way under its normal snowfall totals for the year. So far this winter theres been only a couple of minor storms. So to give you an example, boston has about 17 1 2 inches of snow this time of year. To this point they have only gotten 5 5 1 2 inches. Boston might get about 4 inches of snow. But up here just north of boston where we are in the Merrimack Valley and andover theyre expecting 5 to 9 inches of snow. The flakes started an hour hour and a half ago. We probably have an inch of snow here on the ground. The roads are becoming snow covered. I have seen several plows and salt trucks out this morning trying to take care of the roads. Of course the good news here is that its not a weekday. So theres no commute today. I think people were bracing for the storm. They had plenty of notice about this storm. So we expect obviously a lot of people will stay in. Now, this is a very fastmoving storm. It has been coming up the i95 corridor. As you mentioned, it hit philadelphia and washington, d. C. Overnight. And philadelphia is starting to taper off right now. They will get more snow later on today. New york city has two and a half inches in central park right now. The areas of new jersey connecticut, around it you can see anywhere from 5 to 8 inches of snow. As see here were expecting 5 to 9 inches as this goes along. The worst is going to be around 11 00 or noon. Sometimes between 12 00 and 4 00 this afternoon we really expect the snow to intensify. It could be coming down an inch or more per hour. Right now parts of the east coast and moving into new england is this area of low pressure. The atlantic is providing the moisture. And the cold air coming in right behind it giving us some headaches. Take a look at what we have on the map. Blue popping up. That will be your sleet and snow. Snow really heavy in parts of the northeast. Were not talking feet of snow but some places possibly 3 to 5 inches. Some places as much as 8. We see it forming towards new york. Berk is shires certainly getting dust this morning. A few locations in excess of 4 to 5, even 7 inches of snow and more on the way. Heres what we have for you in terms of the snowfall for dont. Some pots north of boston west of boston could deal with anywhere from 5 to 8 inches of snowfall. Especially in the high Higher Elevations of the mountains and new york 3 to 5. Thats a snapshot what to expect across the northeast. Brady, too, said he cant explain the discrepancies. He professed to have no knowledge of what happened to the balls. Most people probably found that stretched credibility a little bit. Offensive tackle matt light had bradys back on the field for 11 seasons and spoke out in his defense. He doesnt have any record of doing anything that would lead people to believe he would pull off a stunt like this. This is one of the most ridiculous things that could possibly have played out. The team owner says they are fully cooperating with the nfl in this investigation. But they are also fully prepared to get prepared against the seahawks. Theyre practicing again today. In des moines iowa today preparations for a slew of potential gop white house hopefuls are complete. Msnbc Political Correspondent kacey hunt. Who are the headliners we are expected to see there . Reporter this is the first kickoff event of the iowa caucus season which is of course about a year away at this point. You have representatives from what i would call both saoeuldzides of this emerging primary. Chris christie governor of new jersey will be there from that side. On the other side you have this race for conservative activists in particular. Thats very well represented here today. Mike huckabee is speaking last. You will see Rick Santorum and ben carson a neurosurgeon who has lit a fire in some members of the conservative base. I say whats important is who isnt here. That includes a bunch more established folks dominating the headlines as we move through this process. Jeb bush not here. Mitt romney not here. Rand paul could do pretty well in the caucus us. He has a strong loyal base. He will not be speaking here today either. So what this really represents is a chance for all of these candidates to get out in front of a crowd of activists that are really going to drive the process from the beginning. The people who werent there, this event is being organized by steve king. Has kings participation in this dampened the enthusiasm for this event a little bit . I think that kings name on this event is really whats drawn a lot of these candidates here honestly. Hes someone who republicans often try to woo as they start to run in the caucus us. His endorsement could be welcomed. His district is western iowa one of the most conservative parts of the state. On the flip side he obviously has made really controversial comments. Immigration is an issue where republicans have gotten in trouble. Here in iowa this is where romney said he would veto the dream act. We will see some of this today. Dreamers potentially protesting some of these candidates. Steve king was sitting down and having lunch with rand paul a few months ago. The dreamer went up to confront steve king. Rand paul said you know what im going to walk out of this situation. There are potential pit falls for the candidates. Do you think its going to be a problem for a party thats trying to talk about broadening its base when you have some of these controversial immigration comments . Look theres certainly concern about making sure whoever the republican candidate is can broaden their appeal. One person i didnt mention is senator marco rubio who helped spearhead that comprehensive Immigration Reform bill. That has become really toxic with the republican base. You will see these candidates who arent here. Speaking about this in a different way. Jeb bush indicated that mitt romney, for example, made a mistake when he referenced selfdeportation during the last campaign and signified if he runs he will do it differently. Lets start with whats happening in iowa. What impact do you think this will have on 2016. This is for folks in need of foot soldiers and op actives in the hawk eye state. Especially for scott walker Chris Christie, for those that really had the potential to rise and to continue beyond iowa. This will be an early test of their viability. You know especially interesting today to see someone like Chris Christie who isnt necessarily the kind of republican that would appeal to the more conservative, especially more socially conservative iowa republican. Scott walker also. This is someone who a lot of people think could be a dark horse candidate, not as wellknown nationwide. Hes from a neighboring state. A lot of potential for him to rise. This is his first Real Campaign like appearance. He spoke at the meetings in san diego last weekend to party leaders. Now he will go and talk to the foot soldiers. It will be interesting to see how he does. I want to play a sound bite from former Florida Governor jeb bush. He met with mitt romney earlier this week. He talked about that meeting last night. Have a listen. Im actually interested in policy. We talked about that. He shared his views. It was a good conversation. I respect him a lot. And i consider him a friend. The awkward side of this about running stuff we put aside. Ill have my path for a decision. Who knows where that will lead. Talk about awkwardness. Do you see both mitt romney and jeb bush getting in the race . If they do do they effectively cancel each other out . What they will do is make it more difficult for lower tiered candidates to raise money and capture some buzz. Now, the question is does the type of campaign that jeb bush is trying to run, he talked in that speech in fran about wanting to have an adult conversation. He mentioned how he wants to talk about policy. Well, look thats fantastic. That might be a wink and nod to general election voters. First he has to go through a primary. Can he sustain himself what has been in the last few cycles a rough and tumble experience. Can he go and will he go to iowa new hampshire, South Carolina . Will he show up in these cattle calls as we know them and really try to a appeal to those republican voters. If he doesnt, does that cost him votes . Or is he able to raise money elsewhere and sustain himself through the primary season. Thats the real question. Do you go the traditional route and meet in des moines or raise 100 million and somehow win the nomination that way. President obama gave his state of the union where he outlines middle class economics. Heres some of what he said. Lets close the loopholes that lead to in equality by allowing the top 1 to avoid paying taxes on their accumulated wealth. We can use that to help more families pay for child care and send their kids to college. We need a tax code that truman helps working americans trying to get a leg up in the new economy. And we can achieve that together. Cbs released an excerpt of an interview with House Speaker john boehner and mitch mcconnell. The Republican Leaders responded to whether they will go anywhere in the respective chambers. Have a listen to that. From the president s state of the union address, let me ask you, dead or alive . Raise taxes on the wealthy. Why would we want to raise taxes on people . Theres no free lunch. The president wants to raise taxes because he wants to increase washington spending. He asked about Free Community college education. He asked about whether or not there would be appeals or work on the child care tax credit. Of all of those tax credits, got a yes from both of the guys. They mentioned training is another thing. Beyond that its difficult to see where the two sides Work Together which makes me think more and more congressional reporters should pack up and move to iowa. The biggest problem for america and our viewers, here is another middle east country who collapses. Who care . It is the major franchise that is the greatest danger to the United States. How big of a blow is that going to be for u. S. Efforts to try to combat al qaeda in yemen . President hadi the president who is proamerican, has been probably the largest instrument of support for the United States in yemen against al qaeda. It is his forces that have worked with American Forces Counter Terrorism forces against al qaeda. He is proamerican. In effect his governments collapse is a major loss for the Counter Terrorism effort in yemen. Is there anything else the u. S. Could have done to prevent this situation in yemen . Very good question. The rebels are rebelling against the Central Government since 2004. And everyone is asking well what are they . They represent a third of the population. They want more autonomy for the province. The fact of the matter is they are extraordinary antiamerican and proiranian. Lets talk about another threat, this one isis. Secretary of state john kerry talked about turning the tide against the terror group. Lets take a listen to that. Police intelligence community, Law Enforcement community, many countries have come together in an incredibly effective way to fight against an insidious longtime planning process that has been in place. And in a sense were flushing them out. Do you agree with that . I mean are there reasons to be optimistic with what the u. S. Is doing against isis . You hear two narratives in washington. You hear the military narrative, the pure numbers. We have killed 6,000 isis. Their momentum has been stopped. But the fact of the matter is they largely still control the territory they have seized. They still control mosul, the Third Largest city. The battle of kobani is still being raised at this point in time. Most people would disagree with the secretary. The momentum the coalition had against isis has been stalled. Why . Because once again, without someones boots on the ground its going to be very hard to territorially seize territory back from isis. This morning president obama announced he is canceling the end of his trip to india to head to saudi arabia to meet with the new king and pay respects for king abdullah. Do you see a change and how significant is it that president obama is going . The president made his only trip to the middle east last year to meet with the king. This is to repair ties of the dissatisfaction within the saudi monarchy overseer ya policy over the United States and palestinian policy. The president had very good personal ties with king abdullah. He got his mojo back. Hes ready to fight and defend his record his legacy. I thought it was a wonderful speech. It is my hope that democrats and republicans can come together and Work Together to get some things done for the american people. Im curious what you think might actually happen. It is a hopeful concept youre putting forward. Certainly the president shares that and members of coops. But we have seen an in Effective Congress the last couple of sessions. What do you really think will happen . It is my hope and the desire of many members to see that we fix the immigration system. That we pass comprehensive immigration and not leave hundreds and thousands and millions of People Living in the shadow, that we fix the Supreme Court decision on coating rights. Several of us democrats and republicans are prepared to introduce a piece of legislation to make it easy and simple for people to participate. I have said in the past that the vote is precious. It is almost sacred. Its the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democratic society. Something the president addressed at the state of the union. Lets listen to what he said about this and get your reaction on the other side. Heres that. We may go at it in campaign season. But surely we can agree that the right to vote is sacred, that it is being denied to too many. And on this 50th an verse i of the great march from selma to montgomery and the passage of the Voting Rights act, we can come together, democrats and republicans, to make it easier to vote for every single american. What do you think is the biggest uphill battle to accomplishing this . More than anything else is to get the leadership of the congress to see that we get a bill through the House Judiciary Committee and bring it to the floor of the senate and the floor of the house and get it done. 50 years ago i gave blood on that bridge in selma for the right to vote. So when that decision came down from the Supreme Court i wanted to cry. But i couldnt cry. I made a decision that i would continue to stand up and fight and rally my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fix it. And were going to do our very best to fix it. You mentioned selma, sir. Certainly it is a film that is telling your story. And im curious what you think when you see the film and your reaction. Ive seen the film now four times. And each time i cry. Because the story is real. It is so true. In selma, alabama 50 years ago it was hard and difficult. Almost impossible for people of color to register to vote. Only 2. 1 of the blacks are registered to vote. You have to past a literacy test and the constitution of the state of alabama. People were beaten arrested in jail, push shoving. We had a sheriff in selma who guarded the courthouse like it was his own house. He wore a gun on one side a night stick on the other side and carried an electric cow prodder in his hand. He intimidated, he harassed people and made it uncomfortable for people to go up the steps. What inspired you to be so brave and bold in those days . I drew up in rural alabama 50 miles from montgomery. If we visited montgomery or birmingham, i saw the signs that said white man, colored men, white women, colored women. I asked my father why. He said thats what it is. Dont get in the way. Dont get in trouble. In the 10th grade i heard of rosa parks. I heard the words of Martin Luther king jr. On the road. And the words of dr. King and his leadership inspired me. So i got involved in the sitins as a student and later the freedom rides. And later the march on washington where i was the youngest speaker at the age of 23 in 1963. And then des moines from selma to montgomery. Got arrested a few times. My folks thought i had lost my mind. But i made a decision that i would do whatever i could to bring down those signs, end segregation and rid discrimination in the american south. The goals of the investigation will be to determine the explanation for why footballs used in the games were not incompliance with the playing rules and if it was the result of deliberate action. The patriots are cooperating. In a statement, patriots chairman and ceo robert craft said during these three days they were here. We provided access to every full and parttime employee the leagues representatives requested to speak with and communication to search they requested. When do you expect a full report from the nfl . Do you think it will happen before the super bowl . I would be shocked if the nfl said anything definitive or handed down any suspensions or fines before the super bowl. I think for sure this is something thats going to play out in the weeks after when they finally gather all of the evidence or whatevers been happening. I dont think theres any way that they deal with a suspension whether its a belichick or brady or a fine or minimal before the super bowl. I think controversies like this for the nfl are a good thing. Here we are nine days before the super bowl, eight days before the super bowl and were talking about the nfl at length in all kinds of shows that maybe wouldnt necessarily be talking about the nfl. I think controversial calls and this kind of thing for the nfl certainly gets everybody talking about the league. I think were not going to see any definitive answer for them for a while, certainly after the super bowl. Tom brady denied about knowing the pressure in the football. That was echoed by head coach bill belichick, how credible are both of them . I dont think either one are credible. These are two guys who are known for being obsessive about football if nothing else. Bill belichick even at his own press conference admitted he doctors up the balls during practice, he says i have no empathy for anybody who complains about the conditions of the balls, i make them wet, i make them too big, too small, i do all kinds of things to make sure that we get used to playing in any conditions, and he says but i have no idea what was going on with the football even though i do it in practice. Tom brady is a quarterback, he touches the ball on every single play. He knows what the football feels like. He says i like the ball right at 12. 5, its curious that if all of the balls are deflated to a specific point, all deflated exact by two pounds per square inch during that game and you know you like the ball exactly at 12. 5 it doesnt make any sense to me at all that this player and coach are saying we we have no idea what happened here. Kate, you know patriots obviously in the super bowl. Even if they win this super bowl, is their season tainted . Will this victory be tarnished because of the controversial . Will it be tarnished because of it . I have to think so. I think certainly therell be an asterisk that when people mention this year and the super bowl, theyll say that was the deflategate year. Also to keep in mind here is that tom brady and Peyton Manning in 2006 they are the quarterbacks who changed the rule that allowed teams to bring their own footballs. Think about this the nfl is 6 billion a year revenue, and its allowing teams to bring its own equipment. Thats very sandlot move not something youd expect from a place where the stakes are so high. I think in the aftermath of this i believe we will see also a rule change where the nfl more closely controls the footballs so Something Like this does not happen again. Keith, lets talk about the legacy of this on the patriots organization. You know since robert craft bought the patriots in 1994 the team has been to the super bowl six times and won three xlix, will be their seventh appearance appearance. What does this do to the bill belichick, tom brady era . Tarnishes it i think. Thats a shame. This has been happening with the patriots, in terms of allegations of cheating and of course we know what happened with spygate, the patriots are always suspicious,s if this were another team we likely wouldnt be giving it this much discussion it is the patriots, it is the team that got caught during spygate, theyve been accused of stealing signals to jam the signals coming into a opponents headphones. All of these kinds of things are associated specifically with this one team. Has to tarnish the legacy or give confirmation to people. Thats a shame. This is absolutely the best Football Team of the last 15 years, at least, but if were going to attach asterisks in sports to barry bonds and other guys who have been accused who were great players, then youve got to attach something to them.
