>> why did senate majority leader harry reid refer to a reporter's inquiry as, quote, a clown question bro. we'll explain that one later in shows. first to the news live at 5:30 a.m. here at 30 rock in new york city. we start in egypt, where the country's ailing former leader of three decades is reported to be near death this morning adding another layer to a complicated political situation. ousted president hosni mubarak reportedly on life support after receiving -- after suffering i should say multiple strokes while in prison. the 84-year-old serving a life sentence was transferred from his jail cell to a military hospital where he's been monitored. the news comes as supporters of the muslim brotherhood flooded tahrir square in protest to protest the moves made by military generals that would diminish the power of a new president. the brotherhood claims mohamed morsi won sunday's presidential election but supporters on the other side for mubarak's former prime minister ahmed shafiq are refusing to admit defeat claiming a majority of votes. the official tally comes tomorrow. here to sort through this is our correspondent who joins us live from cairo. what can you tell us? >> good morning, willie. let's start with the condition of former president hosni mubarak. his lawyer tells nbc the president is now on a respirator and he does expect the former president to make a full recovery within three to four days and despite some of the conflicting reports that have been coming out throughout the course of the evening, his wife, susan mubarak, has not accompanied or visited him at the hospital. he remains under tight watch at the military hospital here in a cairo neighborhood. but there have been conflicting reports as to the overall state of his health. the official news agency here reporting as you mentioned that he had suffered strokes, he had arrived at the hospital clinically dead and that he was ultimately resuscitated but now his lawyer tells us he is breathing on a respirator. it's not clear whether or not he is conscious or he is remaining at least in a state of a coma. but for the time being, protests in tahrir square have subsided as you mentioned there still remains a great deal of tension between the supporters of mohamed morsi the muslim brotherhood candidate and former prime minister ahmed shafiq. morsi declaring himself the winner based on their tally. shafiq has not provided any evidence why he is the legitimate winner. >> we have to wait until tomorrow to find out who wins that. reporting live for us from cairo this morning, the story changing every day, thanks so much. we turn to domestic politics now. mitt romney ending a five-day, six-state bus tour in his home state of michigan. decision to end the tour in michigan, a state president obama won by 17 points in 2008 underscores an aggressive strategy by the romney campaign to redraw the electoral map. in all the states on the tour president obama won each with at least a 55% of the vote. the states make up 72 electoral votes, roughly 25% of the total needed to capture the nomination. but the bus tour was overshadowed partially by speculation yesterday about romney's potential choice for a vice president. yesterday morning as we told you on "morning joe" jonathan carl with abc news reported that marco rubio, who's been rumored to be on romney's short list for vice president had not been asked to provide financial documents or fill out a customary questionnaire, had not been vetted. in an interview with fox news mr. romney sidestepped questions about whether rubio was up for consideration but a few hours later romney disputed that abc report and says yeah, we're looking at marco rubio. >> i can't imagine who such people are, but i can tell you this, they know nothing about the vice presidential selection or evaluation process. there are only two people in this country who know who are being vetted and who are not. and that's beth myers and myself. and i know beth well. she doesn't talk to anybody. the story was entirely false. marco rubio is being thoroughly vetted as part of our process. >> abc standing by its reporting of yesterday morning saying at the time rubio had yet to be asked to turn over any materials. as of now rubio the only person to be publicly identified as a possible vp candidate by the romney campaign. rubio has refused comment. also this morning a new bloomberg poll gives president obama a 13-point edge over mitt romney in a general election matchup. this is a national poll. make of it what you will. when it comes to the president's handling of the economy, 53% say they disapprove, 43% say they approve of the way the president handling this economy. 45% say this is an interesting number, they are better off now than they were in 2009 when president obama was inaugurated. 45% say better off. 36% say they are worse off since barack obama became president of the united states. on to business now, jpmorgan chase ceo jamie dimon remains under the microscope for his bank's recent failures and risk management that resulted in $3 billion. mr. dimon grilled yesterday by the house financial committee aggressively pressing him for answers. >> is it fair to say that jpmorgan could have losses of a half a trillion dollars or trillion dollars? >> not unless this earth is hit by a moon. >> is gambling investing? >> no. no, it is not. >> what's the difference between gambling -- >> you gamble on average you lose, the house wins is this that's been my experience with investing. that's -- >> i'd be happy to get you better investment adviser. >> why should we allow you to be so big? >> a lot of big reports in the storm. it's convenient to blame them all for everything, but jpmorgan's size and capability and diversification in '08, '09 and 2010 allowed us to continue to do the things you wanted us to do. >> for more on dimon's testimony we go to steve sedgwick live this morning for us in london. steve, a lot of people watching that wonder it's a good show, but will it change anything about the way business is done on wall street? >> that's very interesting because, of course, long before we had this incident over the $2 billion that had been lost at the cio's office in london, there were questions from jamie dimon whether regulators were going too far and those questions are still there, although his position looks a lot weaker now the company has been accused of gambling with the assets rather than use those to invest in american jobs. let me put out one or two. republican -- beg pardon, gary ackerman from new york suggested the bank's hedging amounted to gambling to which mr. dimon turned around and said we lost $2 billion when we lent money to chrysler i assume you still want me to lend money to chrysler. he is a great and polished performer. whether it means there's going to be more or less regulation, more or less scrutiny remains to be seen but he's stedfast in his defense that the cio office operating out of london was hedging the bank's assets rather than gambling. >> steve sedgwick live for us in london, thanks so much, steve. we turn to the latest from the trial of jerry sandusky where the defense will decide whether or not it has the former penn state assistant coach to take the stand in his own defense. sandusky is charged with 51 counts of child sex abuse and faces a maximum possible sentence of 500 years in jail. more than a week into the trial, jurors have heard from the eight men claiming to have been sexually assaulted by san custodoes ki during their childhood. yesterday the defense called sandusky's wife dorothy to the stand and she spoke out for the first time since her husband's arrest. john yang has the story. >> reporter: dottie sandusky, jerry sandusky's wife of 45 years spoke out for the first time since her husband's arrest appearing as a defense witness. under questioning from defense attorney joseph amendola she said she never saw her husband behave inappropriately with any of the eight men who have accused him of sexually assaulting them when they were young boys. sounding nervous and often pausing before answering, she said she never heard a boy cry out for help. a reference to the man known in court documents as victim 9 who told the jury he called out while being assaulted in the sandusky's basement. sandusky pleaded not guilty to more than 50 related charges. in cross-examination by prosecutor joseph mcgettigan she gave her memories of the boys now her husband's accusers. victim 4, he had his problems. he was very demanding. victim 1, very clinging to jerry. victim 9, he was a charmer, he knew what to say, when to say it. mcgettigan asked if she knew any reason any of them plus former coach mike mcqueary who testified he saw sandusky in a shower room with a boy in 2001 would lie about her husband? dottie sandusky paused before answering, i don't know what it would be for. >> rarely is it the case a wife ever brings anything to the table beyond her willingness to testify. >> john yang reporting from pennsylvania. today likely will be the last opportunity for sandusky to testify as defense has indicated it will rest before lunch time. we'll see if sandusky takes the stand today. still ahead on "way too early," lebron james goes down with an injury in the fourth quarter of a tight game four in miami. could he return to be the hero or would russell westbrook's dominant performance be enough to even the series? highlights ahead in sports. stephen colbert, wants a little credit for the romney's horse rafalca reaching new heights in the sport of dressage, that clip and more when "way too early" comes back. >> just how far would you go to keep from taking up arms?
