Good morning and welcome to way too early, the show that puts the word early in early voting. I am kasie hunt, and on this friday, september 25th, well start with the news. A flurry of new battleground state polling is painting a picture of where the race stands just 39 days from election day. In texas, the latest New York Times Siena College poll finds donald trump and joe biden in a statistical tie. In iowa and i think this is so telling the New York Times Siena College poll finds another statistical tie, biden, 45 , to trumps 42 . In the latest Monmouth University pole, trump has a 3 lead, 49 to 46 . Meanwhile in ohio, another tie. Biden, 48 , trump, 47 . But the fox news poll out of that state finds biden with a fivepoint lead, 50 to 45 . In pennsylvania, the latest franklin and Marshall College poll finds biden and donald trump statistically tied with that poll with a nearly eightpoint margin of error. In georgia, the New York Times Siena College poll shows the two tied at 45 and in nevada, biden ahead, 52 to 41 . Now to the fallout of the president s refusal to a peaceful transfer of power. The white house said yesterday the president will, quote, accept the results of a free and fair election, but trump himself again refused to commit to it. Mr. President if you win . We have to be very careful with the ballots. We have to make sure the election is honest. Im not sure that it can be. I dont know that it can be with this whole situation, unsolicited ballots. Hillary clinton just a week or so ago told joe biden do not accept the results of the election under any circumstances, but you dont ask her that question. You only asked me that question. Yeah, go ahead. Yeah, the reason we dont ask her the question is because thats not what she said. To be clear, Hillary Clinton advised biden not to concede until all the votes are counted. Here is what she said in an interview with the recount. Say biden, you know, wins. What do you think trump will do in. Look, i think they have a couple of scenarios that theyre looking for. One is messing up absentee balloting. Yeah, of course. They believe that helps them. So they then get maybe a narrow advantage in the Electoral College on election day because, remember, weve seen a couple of cases like in wisconsin where they did everything they could to mess up voting, but because courts had ordered absentee ballots to be counted if they were postmarked on election day, democrats actually won some important races there. At least we know more about what theyre going to do. And, you know, joe biden should not concede under any circumstances because i think this is going to drag out, and eventually i do believe he will win if we dont give an inch, and if we are as focused and relentless as the other side is. Top republicans tried to aassure the country that there will be a peaceful transfer of power no matter the outcome of the election. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell tweeted, quote, the winner of the november 3rd election will be inaugurated on january 20th. There will be an orderly transition just as there has been every four years since 1792. The number two republican senator, john thune echoed that statement. But there were also a number of republicans who used the same talking point about Hillary Clinton that we heard from the president. Watch this. Well, i think that the president will accept the result. Weve got to make sure that its fair, and i would ask you the same question. Hillary clinton said joe biden should not accept the roult f the election under any circumstances. Ask the same question of every democrat if they think if its a fair election, that they will support the outcome of it. But shes not the candidate. The president is the candidate. Shes not committed to accepting how many people have you asked on the democratic side how many would support the outcome of the election . Once you do that i mean democrats have already obviously made it very clear they dont intend to do that. First of all, they didnt do that four years ago obviously. They used the power of the presidency during the transition to spy on the incoming president. Now, of course, the motto for the democrats is that joe biden should never concede the election ever no matter what. Senators ted cruz, roy blount, and Chuck Grassley also invoked Hillary Clintons name when asked about the president s remarks. Lets talk about what we saw from republicans yesterday in talking about this. It seems on the one hand ive asked questions like this millions of times. Theyre so annoyed with us asking in the hall washingtonwa for years. They did say there will be a peaceful transfer of power, but on the other hand most refuse to name President Trump as the problem, and also as you saw there, Kevin Mccarthy confused he called Hillary Clinton as joe biden. They dont have many words to use against him and that led to awkward exchanges in the hallways. Sure. Just so your viewers know, i dont think every one of the lawmakers watched Hillary Clinton on the recount. These are clear talking points that went out to try go deflect from what President Trump had said both, you know, yesterday, but lets be honest. Its been happening and building up for weeks and months now. This whole whataboutism is not a satisfying remanch Hillary Clinton is not the nominee. She said just wait till theyre in. Also more importantly because trump is the president and controls much of the levels of power in this country, and so he can do things to not just put off concession of an election but also to affect the counting of the election. Thats where much of the anxiety comes from, that what happens leading up to it. We saw what happened yesterday when the doj department of justice put out this statement about the nine votes in pennsylvania. Is that to affect the government in the counting of ballots or the perception of the counting of ballots. So there are is not a lot of reassurance. The one that really stuck out to me was one actually you did not get to, which was Lindsey Graham appearing on fox news did say, yeah, we need to have and we will have a peaceful transition of power, but he had a caveat. He said, when the Supreme Court decides who the winner is, we will respect it. Theres no reason this has to go to the Supreme Court. As a matter of fact, they dont have much say in how elections are decided except in bush v gore. That gave me the hint that they view that as likely a subject of litigation that theyre going to kick up through the court system, and thats where we are. Yeah, no. I think thats a really good point because some of the initial reporting in my first sense off the hill after we learned about rbgs passing is that they were thinking about keeping control of the senate, talking about a vote after election day, and then suddenly everybody seemed to say, oh, no, we need to race this through before election day for the very reason you just arctarticulated. Im glad you raised pennsylvania because i feel like in the last 24 hours or so, i feel theres an increase in the role the state is going to play in this. There are statements rather colorly called naked ballots that may be disqualified. You mentioned the doj press release about ballot counting, and it also seems like it might potentially be the state were waiting on on Election Night in deciding things based on how the chips fall on the rest of the map. Whats your take on the problems that may be coming up in pennsylvania now and the role it might play on Election Night. Good question. Its you know, i think we need to stop talking about it as like Election Night, right . Thats obviously the moniker weve used forever. We assume well turn on msnbc, wait to see who is the winner, and go to bed and wait to see whos going to be the president in january. Thats not the case here. Its many other states who will go well beyond tuesday, and thats just a feature of modern democracy. Its not nefarious. It doesnt mean one side is cheating or the other side is hiding ballots. Its because we have various ways of voting now, and it creates a logjam of ballots that need to be counted. If it takes a little time, so be it. In pennsylvania, youre going to see more votebymail, which will cause this, and confusion because the system by which people are voting by mail requires you to fill out a ballot, put it into a secrecy envelope, put that sboot another envelope, sign the back with your signature, and mail it in. Make sure you have it post marked by election day. And so, you know, this may seem fairly simple and straightforward to a lot of people, but its not. There were tens of thousands of ballots that were tossed out or have the potential to be tossed out. This wasnt a problem then. The Supreme Court changed the law and affirmed it, and so this is a problem that democrats fear, that a lot of votes could be tossed out on election day, creating more confusion. I think your point about Election Night is so important. I keep flashing back to 2000 and tim russert writing florida, florida, florida, and staying up very, very late with my dad, and our tradition was ta watch Election Night and so surprised to go to bed with no result and had no idea what the results would be in the following months. In an effort to show up support on a top issue for voters in november, President Trump announced two new executive orders on health care. Critics argue his actions carry little wait. One order prevents surprise billing, but it requires congress to pass legislation. The other protects preexisting conditions, something thats already covered under the affordable c. A. R. E. S. Act. California, the most populous state in the country continues to lead the nation with over 800,000. Texas, 700,000. Florida, nearly 700,000 confirmed cases. Currently the hot spot is wisconsin as outbreaks in the midwest continue to flare up. Earlier this week governor toe toeny evers declared a Health Connection particularly among young people. We also went out to Macomb County to take a look at how the Trump Campaign is doing going door to door wearing may maga masks. Do you feel thats what theyre doing because of whats going on with the pandemic, or do you feel like youre able to do what you need do regardless . Well, look, kasie. This isnt a campaign being conducted in 1980. Weve got so many tools to reach voters, and were going to leverage every single one of them. I also want to say were in the middle of a global pandemic, and while President Trump may want to ignore that and risk the lives of supporters and volunteers, thats not something joe biden is willing to. Do well follow the science and be safe. If you look at polling, 70 of americans do not want people coming to their doors, whether they have a mask on or not. So you cant have a productive oneonone conversation. Yeah. I mean, i will say we get occasionally folks knocking on our door, and i think always when you see that, it does i am sympathetic to the feelings of those Many Americans who have concerns about that, given all of the all of the circumstances. Lets talk a little bit about the map here. We were talking to sam stein earlier in the hour about the phrase Election Night being a little outdated because we expect counseling to take more time, its going to look like election week, election month. We would like to, im sure youre included, get a little bit of sleep. I wonder where you in the dnc war room are focused on places, states where we should be cautious, where youre getting ready for long counts. I mean there are so many laws across the country that are so different. Ive heard pennsylvania come up as one spot where we should be potentially particularly careful. Where else are you looking and focused at in those terms . I think you mentioned the count progress says could take a number of days. And i know we feel strongly every vote should be counted. But also voting has begun. Theres more than a million and a half that have been counted. So actually every single day, we at the dnc and at the Biden Campaign are trying to bank those votes going into election day. I will say on the question of 270 that you raise, the question for donald trump is that he has a narrow path. He has to basically replicate what he did in 2016, whereas, Joe Biden Haas a lot of states were on the offense in. This has been a longtime republican stronghold, but its been changing a little bit in terms of who lives there, what they care about, and im particularly interested. You were endorsed by joe biden who gave a speech, came under criticism where he gave a speech that seemed to support fred upton in the last round of elections. Talk about that joe biden endorsement and whether you think you might have a better shot this time of defeating fred upton with that help. Good morning. Its so good to be here. Absolutely. Southwest michigan is changing. Its from kalama zhao i represent now as a state legislator over to Lake Michigan down to indiana and up to just south of grand rapids. You know, its one of the least gerrymandered districts in the state because the republicans in the legislature couldnt move indiana or Lake Michigan, and this is a district that has been rapidly trending toward the democrats. Were seeing a demographic challenge here, and were seeing people who want the type of change in politics and policies that their leaders are voting for. Congressman upton has been in the seat for 34 years now and he has a record for voting against health care. Im one of the people who wants health care. That makes a big difference. One of the things that has changed is that with Vice President joe bidens support, its another example of all the pieces coming in line. Congressman upton was criticized recently because he used some of the Vice President s words that may have implied an endorsement. This time its crystal clear. Joe biden knows how important it is for me to win and hold democratic control of the congress but also how important it is to make sure that michigan as a whole votes blue. So michigan obviously narrowly did go for President Trump last time around and there has been we joke a lot about democrats being anxious about things on a national level, but theres definitely a little bit of hand wringing going on about how the Biden Campaign is being run this time. Im curious, though, your view on President Trump. There obviously were a lot of Trump Supporters in michigan last time. He touched a nerve to people who feel especially left behind by the way the economy has trended. If you if you win in november and the president wins his election, do you see a world in which you can work with President Trump come january . As a state legislator, ive had to work in minority control in the legislature for the last few years. Ive worked with both democratic governors and republican governors. At the heart of why i run to serve, we need to put people of the community ahead of the decisions. I want to make sure that i represent the district, our country, our state, theyre going to have a good person to work with in me. Heres the reality though. Unfortunately, many of President Trumps policies have not helped us here in southwest michigan, and at times when congressmen could have stood up to actually take a stand on things like, you know, health care that people in southwest michigan desperately need, he voted time and time again to take away health care. We all know theres an active republican lawsuit that would dismantle the affordable c. A. R. E. S. Act. This seems to be something he would support because he literally hat td the upton even named after him that would have been a novote. Southwest michigan voters know we need to see real change in this district, and its got to be focussed on real focused on people. The people left behind by so many of President Trumps policies that have been supported by fred upton. Very quickly we talked about republicans and democrats. Spar tan or wolverine. So you have democrats hiring a bunch of lawyers, preparing for the possibility they may have to fight to prove if they won that they won and that they can take power. The reason that people should Pay Attention to this more so than ever. Look at wisconsin, ohio, pennsylvania. Theres still court fights. Theyre still legislating about how do you count votes, how do you even vote during a pandemic and how do you validate that vote and have people trust in it . They say they want to do the right thing. And i think you and i that know them trust theyll do the right thing. But they say and do another thing because theyre under the spell of donald trump. I think its good that Mitch Mcconnell and others came out and said, listen, every year since the founding of this country we had an election, we trust the results sometimes it takes longer to count the votes but theres always a successful and safe and smooth transfer of power. Thats a good thing. I think what is so fundamentally different of politics is people made the mistake from separating politics from media and technology. You cant do that. Because of media and technology theres so much misinformation, believing something thats not true. We now know from four years of documented record he has this spell on him. If he says it to be true, they believe it to be true. So you would hope that people would stand up and say listen, the results are the results. If you lose your ability to trust the votes that are counted, literally democracy has no soul, no meaning.
