The focus is to get House Republicans to live up to a deal they already made, and by the way, that wasnt the easiest deal to accept, it included cuts to transportation, the deal that we have now for some House Republicans to be propelling us toward a shutdown means among other things that air Traffic Control training would stop, air Traffic Controllers who would continue going to tower to work wouldnt be getting paid. Not to mention the Service Members not getting paid. All of the other unacceptable things that would go along with shutdown. A reminder here, September 30th is the dayton calendar even the house beats that critical September 30th deadline, any bill that moves through the house would still have to make it through the senate and back to the house and finally to the president s desk. Republican holdouts continue to vote down any Government Funding bill. Speaker mccarthy still looking for ways to buy himself some time. The speaker is looking into a 45day extension that would temporarily fund the government through november. The pn is facing backlash. The times writes, quote, hes certain to encounter opposition to that time line even from republicans who support a stopgap funding measure. Mccarthy issued a rare public rebuke of those gop members holding the debate yesterday. Almost they want to walk you into a shutdown and then blame you for the shutdown. I think we should show we can govern. I asked you this yesterday, should americans expect a shutdown on is the . , no, you should never give up. Got to love that consistent optimism from speaker sh, because look, congressman matt gaetz of florida defended why hes holding this process up. Im not proshutdown, but the way to fund the government is not the same weve been doing since the mid1990s one up and down on the government, we should have separate spending bills. Speaker mccarthy promised that in january. Im not here to hold the government hostage im here to hold Kevin Mccarthy to his word. My vendetta is against a washington system that allows corruption to put lobbyists above the American People. Now, on the other side of congress the senate will attempt tomorrow to pass its own Stopgap Funding Bill with bipartisan bills. If that gets through it will make its way to house. But reaching across the aisle could be one of his last acts as speaker. One republican said he would consider to oust Speaker Mccarthy. If Speaker Mccarthy allows a deal to pass with democratic votes would you support ousting him from the speakers chair . That would be something that id look at. I think the thing that ive been wondering about, are we heading toward a shutdown despite mccarthys optimism it looks like we are until we arent obviously, how does he maneuver within his own conference when it feels like some of these holdouts were never going to vote for a continuing resolution, it kind of seems chaos is the point, how do you negotiate with that. A game of political incentives. Lawmakers have an incentive to drive chaos and drive up their own support. What Kevin Mccarthy is dealing with right now is a group of republicans who want him to pass all 12 Appropriations Bills within a weeks time. This is not a short process. Its a very, very long process. You got to reconcile them with the senate and pass them all again once the reconciled versions can come up for a vote. This is not necessarily a quick process at all and what mccarthy is asking his members to do is help buy some time. Get their upper hand with the senate, send them a product, and then that gives you a better way in the negotiations to do it. Thats what worked for mccarthy during the debt ceiling negotiations, he was able to jam through that bill, send it over to the senate, show the white house he had some leverage, because of those negotiations, though, hes in this position this time and its why im sort of interested in how schumer is acting on this and make his own end run which starts the process on the senate clock, talk to me about how that might play out the shutdown is one half of this story, because if mccarthy takes the route that schumer is offering him, hes probably out of a job, right . Right. Theyve been working on a bipartisan continuing resolution, this would probably bring us to early december and it would likely include money for ukraine as well as Disaster Relief and some money for the border as well, requested as part of the president s supplemented funding request. What schumer is trying to do is pass this before the end of the week, it takes forever to pass, at least four days or so for this to pass, try to pass that to mccarthy and say, this is what we have on the table, this is the bipartisan product, lot of republicans who vote for this product especially if it has ukraine aid in it, of course, try to jam the house and say to Speaker Mccarthy this is what we have, take it or leave it. The other thing thats likely to happen is mccarthy is probably ousted from his job, have you heard from other moderate members of your conference that theres an appetite to step in and save him there on Government Funding. Something has to give with kevin here, hes made a deal that hes only going to stay as speaker as long as he continues to work with the most extreme members of his caucus that have no interest in governing. Theyre enjoying, you know, dragging the country with them, but the only solution is going to be one where moderate democrats like me work with republicans in some way and, you know, kevins going to have to make that choice for himself and its obvious that hes not going to be able the fund the government if hes working with the likes of matt gaetz, Marjorie Taylor greene and Lauren Boebert. Would you yourself vote to save mccarthys speaker ship. Great conversations to have, i think, you know, there will be concessions if we do that, but i think thats a good conversation. We ought to have those conversations but they havent started kevin has been very clear thes only trying to work with matt gaetz, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor greene and the most extreme members of his party. And on the house floor they cant even pass their own bills to fund the government. Its stunning when you watch votes falling down that we havent seen. What is the tone and tenor of your conversations here as a member whos still new to washington . It seems like some of the folks on the right matt gaetz and others are here for the chaos and not to legislation late. Its the tail wagging the dog and its been frustrating, there are so many moderate republicans, members of the Problem Solvers Caucus who are pragmatic who want to get things done and if these antics by the extreme republicans continue i hope they will because we want to work with republicans and it only takes a few to go around the rest of the republicans. I wonder if thats the conversation that josh and Brian Fitzpatrick are having with the speakers office, what do you think of the chance of Problem Solvers Caucus bill getting to the floor . The funding for ukraine is sticking issue. Well, i think the main issue if those bills get to the floor theres a Broad Coalition of bipartisan members who will vote for all the things that were pushing for, continuing to fund the government, funding for ukraine, funding for Border Security, those are the things that are at the center of what were talking about, and you know, we can do a motion for discharge, it takes five republicans to join with House Democrats and Senate Democrats and Senate Republicans were all in agreement we dont want to hurt our economy by shutting down the government and theres very reasonable and moderate path that well see a lot of leadership from in the senate this week from Senate Democrats and Senate Republicans to show the American People theres a way we can continue to fund the government, its not too far on the right or the left.
