Humanity. In italy, the numbers are shocking. 793 people died in a 24hour period and 6,557 new covid19 cases were reported. That is despite the lockdown in place for weeks which Officials Say is being routinely ignored. Here in the United States, there are now more than 24,000 confirmed cases of covid19. At least 297 people have lost their lives. New york state itself now has almost half of all the cases in the country. Congress continues to negotiate a stimulus package which the white house says could cost more than 2 trillion. Congressional leaders are set to meet again later this morning. Despite being the wealthiest nation on earth, hospitals and medical workers sound the alarm that we are in danger of running out of vital medical supplies and equipment. The American Hospital Association Estimates that some hospitals are losing up to a Million Dollars a day and rising. They are seeking emergency credit and pressing washington for a 100 billion stabilization fund. Despite the dire situation, President Trump says, supplies should be left to the highest bidder and that the federal government and states are in competition. On your defense production act power, one of the features of that is that the federal government would be able to control the output, whether its masks or ventilators. Get it to the most areas of need and control the pricing to keep it at a market level so its not price gouging. We hear from governors, they cant find supplies and prices have gone up. You talked about the act but you have not compelled any companies. Why not . Because we have so Many Companies making so many products. They are going to go on the open market. We want them on the open market from the standpoint of pricing. Otherwise, its going to be we could direct them to places in greatest need. We are directing states and sometimes we will be competing against states which i dont want and we will drop out of the bidding. We want the states to go first. Its happening fast. Governors are trying to get. If they are competing with us, we drop out. There should be no bidding. Joining me now and throughout the show, the host of the deconstructed podcast and my friend and colleague, medi hassan and dr. Libby roy. Thank you to both of you for joining us. Dr. Roy, let me start with you. Two days ago the president said that anyone who needs a test in this country can get a covid19 test. Not just because you want one, but because you display the symptoms necessary. We have spoken to patients and doctors in the last 24 hours who have now said that is entirely a lie or the president needs to get rid of everybody around him who is telling him so because its not true. Good morning. First of all, how are you doing . Were okay. Thank you. Were coming to you im coming to you from my home for the first time in the entire 30 years ive been in this business. Everything is unusual. Lets be clear, right now we have a shortage of almost everything from basic items such as gloves and masks and gowns, basic items, that doctors and nurses and Health Care Professionals need to protect themselves. Let alone the patients. Testing is something that as everyone knows, its been so slow to roll out. We are at a shortage. Were at a place where we cant just have anybody go get tested. Those are not the criteria right now. The criteria are for only people who are symptomatic, fever, cough, shortness of breath, to be getting tested. Remember, its not just about a matter of lack of tests. Its a matter of the people that theyre going to be seeing who are going to be doing tests, Health Care Professionals need to don full protective equipment which we are in shortage of. Thats why this is really critical. The president said two days ago the government is not in the shipping business. We shouldnt be involved in procuring things. We dont need to direct factories to make masks and respirators. We have heard from hospitals to say they are on their last few dozen swabs. We heard from the v. A. Saying they dont have enough testing for people available. We heard from doctors who are saying they are reusing masks. This business about the government being in competition with states and every man for himself poses a few problems including that in which states will buy everything thats on the market for the most money that they can pay for it so that they have it. Were not going to get accurate and efficient distribution. This is just not the way this should be running. The idea that you rely on the free market in a time of National Emergency in a pandemic is absurd. I dont know why he has not invoked the defense production act to compel companies to up their manufacture of masks of ventilators of gowns of the eternal materials that the country is lacking. Owe talked about it. He tweeted about it. He hasnt done it. I dont know why. Then again, who would have guessed if you put a thinskinned ego maniacal former tv star in charge that things would end in disaster . Who would have guessed that . The coronavirus is a natural disaster. Its not manmade. The response to it here in the United States, that disaster is purely manmade. That man is donald j. Trump. The testing situation has been its infuriating to see how few tests are being done. We are ramping up tests. We are seeing tests done in the numbers it should have been done weeks ago. Stats for viewers. At the beginning of march, the United States had tested 1,000 people. It went up to 10,000 people in mid march. Now we reached more than 100 thousand tests. 1,000 at the beginning of march. South korea had tested 100,000 people at the same time. South korea and the United States got their first case on the same day back in january. The difference is the south korean government got its private sector to make stuff, start testing. The United States was led by donald trump who told us it was a small problem it would go away, it was under control. It was one guy from china. It would miraculously disappear. The warm weather would get rid of it. It was mild. It was the equivalent of the flu. It was completely shut down. That was the stuff he was saying in public. In private as we now know from reporting in the Washington Post and elsewhere, he was ignoring warnings from his intelligence agencies in january telling him this was a problem, his Health Secretary called him to try and talk covid19 with him. He only wanted to talk about vaping and when flavored vaping would be on the market. He complained when he was in india the cdc was spooking the market by talking about when not if. This president does have blood on his hands, im sorry to say. Last night i had a conversation with a brigadier general. There are moments in history you think about, whether 9 11 or the last recession or katrina, a lot of people talk about spanish flu, the depression. There are moments were comparing it to. I remember in 2005 when everything seemed to be going wrong. They sent him in. He was chomping on his cigar and got the thing in order. He was saying last night, he said theres a lot of things we can do. There are nurses and, doctor,s in training who we can deploy. Theres defense production act that can cause the government to get involved in the business of manufacturing these supplies that we need and the equipment we need urgently through private companies. Theres the deployment, the president said were not a shipping organization. In fact, he made the point that the army corps of engineers and fema can actually ship and distribute things, determine where needs are in a more essential fashion. The fact is there seems to be a very desperate need for a federal government response. We have had governors responding with shelter in place orders and efforts to get this stuff. But we need a federal response. 100 correct. I want to drive home a point which is that this idea of this freeforall, whichever state can get these necessary supplies, can i just tell you as a doctor im speaking on behalf of many of my medical colleagues who have been texting and calling me every day about real time situations happening at their hospitals nationwide. This idea that only certain hospitals and certain locations will be getting life saving supplies is beyond unethical and egregious. I just want to make that clear. We have one agenda and that agenda is the health and safety of our public. I saw your interview with the Lieutenant General. Can i tell you, when i was a second Year Medical Student in new orleans, when Hurricane Katrina struck, i saw and my classmates saw the Lieutenant Generals face on tv every single day. When i think of that man and what he has done, i think of what leadership really is. To me based on my experiences from working in homeless shelters to worki ining at addin treatment centers, my observation in terms of what a true leader is, i have my uri, which doesnt stand for upper respiratory infection but a leader is somebody who unites, who reassured, w e shussures an somebody who advises, whose advice is rooted in data and science. You are absolutely right, at this point, our medical professionals thats not the president. Our medical im really, really thinking about my med School Classmates and fellow residents, people i love and many other doctors and nurses and Health Care Practitioners and nurse practicers in and respiratory therapists this team of people who are required to take care of one person. Im thinking of these front line people who are truly risking and compromising their safety because we are lacking basic items in the richest country in the world. Thats egregious. I agree with what the Lieutenant General was saying there terms of really getting people at the federal level involved. Army corps of engineers, military, to help with the logistics. He kept talking about the logistics and thats what we need so doctors and nurses can focus on direct patient care. Dr. Roy, convey our deepest appreciation on the part of the nation to you and everybody in your profession, because you are going out there risking your lives. You will be keeping us safe. Many of our lives will be saved by you and your colleagues. Make sure all of them know that this is a service that they are providing that we are deeply appreciative of. Thank you for your time as well. We will be depending on it daily and weekly. Joining me now is the mayor of miami. He tested positive for covid19 more than a week ago after meeting with a delegation of brazilian officials, one of whom was later confirmed to have the disease. Mayor, first and foremost, how are you . Im doing well. Thank you so much. Its been im fortunate. Im in the category of people that right now is experiencing very mild symptoms. Even though i am we urge people to take this extremely seriously. We are asking people to stay at home and we are telling people who are not from here, who are spring breakers to go home and make sure that were respecting social distancing. If you have to go outside. All nonessential businesses are closed in the county. Beaches are closed. Parks are closed. Were taking all the precautions that we can to make sure that this deadly virus does not spread further in our community and does not tax our hospitals and First Responders more than they already are. Mayor, in states Like Washington state, california, illinois, new jersey, new york, we have had almost statewide shelters in place. You havent had that in florida. As you just mentioned, a lot of spring breakers. We have been seeing images of them all over the tv last week. This invincible kid attitude, that this isnt going to come to us. While you may be able to control things around miami, you have a lot of people in your region who have not been taking this seriously. Your beaches were open until a couple of days ago. Thats a huge problem. Everywhere we see across the country and we see across the world, its evident that those who dont take this seriously are going to reap the consequences. Our hospitals, as you mentioned and as your guests have mentioned before are getting to the point where they can easily get overrun. They are going to be short in supply. We have, thankfully, started buying equipment as of january of this year. Our fire chief identified this thread right after the super bowl and we started to acquire equipment. We have personal protective equipment for First Responders. We decontaminate our trucks if we are transporting someone that has potentially the coronavirus. Every single time. We have personal protective gear we use to treat people. Were ready in the city. Absolutely, i think this is something that the state and the nation must take seriously. Otherwise, this pandemic will cause an unnecessarily high amount of deaths in the community. Mayor, im glad to see you are looking well and you are getting better. Our thoughts are with you. Thank you for joining us. We will check in with you. What i would like to just book you now for the moment you find out that you are clear of this virus so we can celebrate together with the nation. Mayor of miami. As american heads for another potential recession, or worse, we cannot allow a redo of 2008. Taxpayers filling the pockets of ceos and shareholders should not be tolerated anymore. My thoughts on that next on msnbc. Even though i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib not caused by a heart valve problem. So if theres a better treatment than warfarin, ill go for that. Eliquis. Eliquis is proven to reduce stroke risk better than warfarin. Plus has significantly less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis is fdaapproved and has both. Whats next . Sharing my roots. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis, the number one cardiologistprescribed blood thinner. Ask your doctor if eliquis is whats next for you. Simple, easy, awesome. [ barking ] in had time of massive uncertainty, one of two things are certain. We are either on our way into or more likely already in a recession. Like in the last recession, some industries may need bailouts. Not because they deserve them or have a right to them but much like the Auto Industry last time because what they do is essential to our economy and to some degree our National Security. Mostly, because they and the industries that supply them employ millions of americans who would otherwise lose their jobs. Im talking about the Airline Industry, which employs 10. 7 Million People or boeing specifically which employed over 150,000 directly and is by a long shot americas biggest exporter. Its a defense contractor. Until we dont have wars and National Security threats, we need that company. There are other Industries Seeking bailouts including the Casino Industry and cruise industry. Both of which you may think are less important to the economy. But both of which employ lots of people. Decisions will have to be made as to who survives and who doesnt based on your taxpayer dollars. 11 years after the great recession, the world has changed. Theres a new sheriff in town. Its you. While some of us would like Major Industries which employ millions of americans to survive, even if it means lending them more money, were going to want that to happen on our terms. Here is what those terms look like to me. You want our money . We or at least your employees get a piece of the action so that once you are profitable again, we all win. You want our money . Get your executive compensation in line with what you pay your workers. Ceos make up wardward of 220 ti what workers make. You want our money . You cannot spend it on buying your own stock back and making your shareholders until you have made all your workers whole. Make sure they are paid for time they were off while you reduce service because of coronavirus. Make sure they were all rehired and that they have a role in any profve fiprofits you generate. Finally, you want our money . The climate. Do your part to fix it. End of story. You may wonder how it will have any impact whatsoever on the decisions that get made. Remember, the initial bailout bill that failed on september 29, 2008, it failed because average americans called their members of congress and senators and told them they didnt want that to happen. Congressional leaders will meet later this morning to discuss details of what is expected to be more than a 2 trillion stimulus package to combat the challenges by covid19. This week in the new york times, they wrote, forget about bailouts. Theres one way to end the coronavirus financial panic. The government should offer every American Business large and small and every selfemployed and gig worker a no interest bridge loan guaranteed for the duration of the crisis to be paid back over a fiveyear period. Back with me,hassan and adam toos. Thank you for joining us. Lori, you were adam is the author of a book called crashed how a decade of financial crises changed the world. I thought people should read this but now you have to read it. Were headed into Something Like that. Lori, you and i talked about the thought that went into buying troubled assets from the banks back in 2008 and 2009 when that was actually the problem. That financial crisis was caused by bad assets by financial shenanigans. Now were in a world in which gig workers and employees and people like me are working from home. I dont need that help. There are a lot of people who cannot call up their bank and get a loan. There are Small Businesses around me closed all across this country. Andrew, like me, is a capitalist. He is no unusual lefty. He believes regular people and Small Businesses need to get this money as much as big businesses do. I agree. I think this is a time for immediate action. Much as we discussed yesterday ea evening, getting money to banks is a quick process. Getting money into the hands of people and Small Businesses can be more challenging. I think the key here is whatever the policy is that ends up doing just that is a relentless emphasis on execution. Whether its getting money to individuals, how can you do that as quickly as possible . Can you use existing direct deposit infrastructure set up . If its Small Businesses, how do you do that . Do you go through some of the Financial Technology lenders . How do you get money instantly into Small Businesses . Adam, were 11 years, 10 years out from the worst of what happened. In some cases, five years out from americans who feel it was five years ago when we started to see wages go up because we put a dent in unemployment. The fact is, for some americans, they are still feeling the effects of the last recession and experts tell us this one is going to feel a lot worse. I dont know whether it lasts longer and how much deeper it goes. We are looking at a at the least a big recession, at the worst, something more than that. Were looking thursday unemployment numbers are really going to tell the story. If the early signs are anything to go by, were looking at not just something on the scale of 2008 but a shock to the labor market totally unprecedented in the history of the United States economy or any other economy. Earliest mat y estimates say 2 people could sign on for jobless claims over the last week. Thats multiples higher than anything that happened in 2008. The worst month there, 800,000 people lost their jobs. That was bad enough. We could be looking at millions of people having lost their jobs in a single week. Radicalism of the proposal is the details aside, what that captured is the extraordinary emergency that were facing where not just the vulnerable parts of the u. S. Economy, manufacturing, you mentioned Auto Industry earlier on, but the core Service Sector economy, the bits and pieces of the economy that we rely on every day are just being shut down. There are some who suggested, including you and me, that if we are going to spend the kind of money we are spending, use it to affect structural change. We debated obamacare for a long time. That was 1. 2 trillion. We are talking about all the Student Loans in america, i dont know, under a trillion dollars. We are dropping half a trillion dollars a day into this financial market. This thing thats coming out of the senate is probably in excess of 2 trillion. As you know and as lori knows, theres a lot more money that goes into the system than that. What if we use that to change all the other things that are broken in society, the 40 million hungry people, the 500,000 who sleep on their streets or in homeless shelters every night, the children who dont get proper Public Education because we wont fund that . Is this a moment for structural change . Yes, very much so. Remember, you said you are a capitalist. Just as there are no atheists in a fox hole, there are no capi l capitalists in a pandemic. Were all socialists. The president says he is okay with the u. S. Government taking equity stakes in companies that get bailed out. A few weeks ago, people were upset with Bernie Sanders for being too extreme. You are right, massive amounts of money are going into the system. They need to go into the system. The system is broken, as you pointed out eloquently in your commentary last night. On friday evening, the ceo of goldman sach was awarded a pay raise. Shame on him. Shame on everyone associated with that decision. On friday also, analysts moved their prediction of the growth drop in quarter two from 5 , which would be bad, to 24 . A 24 fall in quarter two, which to put it many cin context, has happened. 24 is unprecedented. This could look worse than anything we have seen before. If it is worse than anything we have seen before, we cant just do what we have done before. As you say, we have to try things differently. We have to think outside the box. Its not about using it as an excuse to do left wing things. Its about fixing the broken system that got us to this point, to point of fragility. Why is it that now everyone is saying the Coronavirus Vaccine should be free, including joe biden . But joe biden and others havent said, why cant health care across the board be free . Why is it only an emergency now and it wasnt six months ago when people were dieing from other things . I do think when this money is being put on the table, we need to spend it in the right way and not make the same mistakes as 2008. People right now on fox news, theres a headline on the website saying Bernie Sanders plan will cost 10 trillion. You know what . Who cares . The crash in 2008 cost 22 trillion. We need to think big. We need to think outside the box. Thank you to lori. We talked twice in the last 12 hours. I suspect that will be a pattern. Adam, you and i have much, much, much more to talk about as well. While you dont watch him on tv, read his book. Its really important. Much of the Airline Industry is taking a nosedive during this crisis which is triggered by the pandemic. Why are some are arguing it doesnt deserve a bailout. When you own horses, you dont just own horses. You own a pasture. A fence. A barn. An arena. More fence. And hay. Lots of hay. As the senate works to finalize a at least 2 trillion stimulus bill, theres a concern Certain Companies dont deserve taxpayer funded aid. The Airline Industry has said it will need more than 50 billion in federal assistance to avoid massive layoffs by the end of the month. Look at what happened the last time we gave them taxpayer money. The big four, delta, american, united and southwest, grew their profits over the years and spend 39 billion on Share Repurchases known as buybacks. Share repurchases benefit shareholders, executives and investors. They cause the value of shares to go up. Nearly 80 of the 50 billion that they are asking congress for now, had those companies done like the majority of americans each day, paid down debts and saved what little extra they have for a rainy day, they might not have needed another bailout. While the majority of americans living paycheck to paycheck is another bailout an answer to fixing this . Joining me is derek hamilton, professor of policy and economics at ohio state university, medi hassan is with me as well. I supported bailouts last time. I will do so again this time because until we have an answer as to how you pay people for the longterm, we dont have Unemployment Insurance that lasts enough, we dont have universal basic income. A job is the best way to keep people paid. But there are legitimate concerns about whether or not there should be massive Strings Attached to bailouts as i articulated. No buybacks of stocks and executive compensation in order and your staff, your employees involved in the running of the company. Could that be a shortterm fix to something more longterm in terms of universal basic income or some way of decreasing income inequality in this country . You are spot on that if we are going to offer bailouts, they should come with conditions. Those are lessons from the past. In the last great recession, we didnt have conditions. We should not have companiy iei profiting from this. We need immediate actions in addition to bailouts with conditions like requiring there arent layoffs and you are able to keep workers in place and you dont have stock buybacks, you can come up with other interventions that are immediate like direct cash assistance and ensuring the current social safety net that we have to make sure the states dont go bankrupt in the process in trying to make sure that Unemployment Compensation is given out in a more pronounced way, especially as we Ask Companies to close their businesses during this catastrophe. I want to ask our control room to put the proposed republican bill in terms of how much people will get. 1,200 for individuals that make up to 75,000. 500 bucks for every child. 600 for those who pay little to no federal taxes. Lets be clear on this. The reason you would pay little to no federal taxes is because you make little to no money. They will get the littlest to no amount of handout from the government. Were again being backward about this. If you are poor and you lose your whatever meager income you have, your rent doesnt go away. Your need for groceries doesnt go away. Your need for gas in your car doesnt go away. Yet, the least among us will get the least amount of money under this proposal. Indeed, as you just put it, the least among us get the least amount of money. Its beyond parody. It almost feels like a headline from the onion. Republicans came up with a plan and decided to give more money to people with more money and less money to people with less money. That makes no sense whatsoever. Unless you are a republican and thats what you do for a living. Its bizarre. We have been talking about the failure to bail out ordinary people in this country since 2008 when wall street was bailed out and famously main street wasnt. I fear were going down the same road. That republican tax plan also offers huge Corporate Tax breaks to big businesses. Of course it does. The bailouts for Aviation Industry have to acknowledge the fact that 95 of their free cash over the last decade was spent on buying back shares to boost their income of their shareholders and executives. Back in 2008, the attorney general of new york, andrew cuomo, now governor, did a report showing the top nine banks that got 175 billion in bailout money paid themselves 32 billion in bonuses. In the midst of the crisis and the recession. We cannot let that happen again. Here is what they said. Here is what they said back then. It was very, very clear its been documented, written about. They said if you cause us to deal with executive compensation, there will be a brain drain. The best will leave. I dont know where exactly theyre going but they will leave. We will not good good our companies will be run by people like me. I dont care anymore. I dont care. So what . If your people cant manage to come into the office at 220 times what the average worker earns, i dont care. Also, what best . They were the people who caused the crash in 2008. The idea that they should get bonuses when everyone was suffering was mad. This time around, they didnt cause the crisis this time around. As you pointed out in your introduction, they didnt prepare for the rainy day. They were busy paying themselves huge amounts of money when they should have been getting ready. 22 Million People earning under 40,000 according to a study this week will get no benefit from the republican tax plan. We need to up that to at least two grand a month, minimum. Derek hamilton, here is the thing. Companies will say they have a fiduciary responsibility to protect their shareholders. Theres no legal responsible to protect the earth or your workers. The fact is there isnt. Some of the airline cases they have unions. So they will have greater difficulty laying off staff. For those without unions, how do we in the process, in the moment which may be this week, where we agree to their bailouts, how do we, when their voices are not at the table, the voice of the working people is not at the table, theyre not invited to any white house roundtables, how do we make sure that we say, hey, delta, american, united, i get it, its important, we need the airlines, you employ 10 Million People, we dont want you to going under. The worker has to be protected. You know, you are right. The shareholders are right when they say they have a responsibility. In reality, the American Government does not have that same iffiduciary responsibility. Their responsibility is to the people. When they offer bailouts and they have to in this particular moment they may have to. But theres two points. One is, we could have resilient type federal infrastructure so they wont have to offer bailouts the next time we have a pandemic and the next time we have an economic crisis, cl whi we can count on would agree. If we had a green new deal, we would have more nimble work forces that could be redirected to areas that we need immediately like if we need to get shipments of food to supermarkets. Going back to your point, if we are going to offer bailouts, they have to be with conditions. They have to come with Strings Attached. Then also, we should keep in mind that we dont have to shore up workers only through bailouts. Theres a whole other policy infrastructure such as direct cash payment. Direct Cash Payments to deal with the immediacy of our Economic Conditions right now. Keep workers where they are with Unemployment Insurance, shoring up that system. And direct Cash Payments for examples, some workers that cant access the unemployment system as currently constructed like gig workers, for example. Derek, thank you. Medi, thank you. Derek, i will talk about the climate at the end of the 9 00 hour. This might be an opportunity to start taking that a little more seriously. Some of the hardest hit communities across the United States are experiencing dire shortages of medical equipment. Last week, President Trump told governors, you are on your own. Georgia has at least 550 confirmed cases of covid19 and at least 20 deaths, according to nbc newss ongoing count. Joining me now is republican congressman buddy carter of georgia. Hes a pharmacist by trade and the owner of a small business. Hes also a member of the energy and commerce committee. Congressman, good to see you again, sir. First and foremost, how are you . Hows your family . Hows your district doing . Were doing well. Actually, were doing very well in the first congressional district. Weve had a couple of cases. We havent had any deaths yet, thank goodness. But we remain vigilant in making sure that were doing everything we are supposed to be doing and making sure that were using all the proper precautions that we should be using. Congressman, you and i have enjoyed a great relationship in which we often argue about things theres no time for that anymore. Were all on the same side of dealing with this. I want to know about what you think of the confusion coming from the top right now. As a man who works in the health care field. You are a pharmacist, you understand that people need good information, right . The number one job i think of from my pharmacist is, i trust them for good information. Were getting very confusing information out there, much of it coming from the white house. How does that make you feel as a Health Care Professional . Well, i would beg to differ somewhat. You know, everybodys concerned about, oh, ive got to get the test, ive got to get the test. Its been made clear by dr. Berks and by dr. Fauci that thats not necessarily the case. What we need to do is adhere to what weve been told. That is, making sure were washing our hands, making sure were coughing into our arm, making sure that were using all the precautions that we should be. If youve got a cold, if you think that you have symptoms, yes, you need to go to your doctor and get in touch with someone to have the test done. But if youre asymptomatic, you need to make sure youre staying away from people who are susceptible and vulnerable to this. Nursing homes, elderly citizens, someone whos immune system has been compromised. If we would just use common sense, then that would carry us a long ways. So, accept that the president told Yamiche Alcindor that everybody who needs a test can get a test. Weve talked to doctor after doctor, after patient after patient, who have symptoms. I had sonny shulkin, the former va secretary and a doctor say that woman should have had a test and she never got a test. The fact is that donald trump thinks that everyone who does meet the criteria for getting a test can get one. Thats dishonest and thats causing some sick people to not get the test. Look, ali, weve got to get past that right now, we know what we should be doing, and thats what we should do. I dont know the situation that you speak of, but i can tell you that if you do feel like you have symptoms, you need to get in touch with your health care provider, your doctor. Yes, we do need to get you a test, but most importantly, you need to selfquarantine. If you think youve got symptoms, you need to make sure youre staying away from other people and practicing good personal hygiene, that youre makingi insure youre washing y hands. Lets just use common sense through this and not worry so much about blaming someone, but worry more about what our responsibility is. Congressman, im with you. Im with you on this. But the president gets up there every day and blames someone. Not him. He blamed a bad system, he blamed china, he blames all sorts of people. Were not doing it, but lets put that aside for a second. Were about to approve something in the next day or two from congress that will exceed 2 trillion, which as you know, would probably cover obamacare and all student debt in the country. Are we cool with the idea that we should probably be spending our money on universal health care at this point, as a medical professional . Well, what i hope we dont see is universal health care is medicare for all come about as a result of a crisis. I dont want to see us have socialized medicine as a result of the crisis. And i certainly dont want us to have socialism as a result of the crisis. Right but congressman, hold on, hold on. You know youre talking to a canadian, right . Youre talking to a canadian. Im just guessing here, top of my head, 58 countries in the world, all of which are highly developed countries, have universal medicine, many of which were brought in by conservative governments, actually a conservative idea. In the United States, it was first floated as a conservative idea. In massachusetts, it was done by a republican conservative governor whos now a member of the senate. Universal health care is not at all a liberal concept. Its not a socialist concept at all. Well, unfortunately, its a concept that doesnt work. And all you have to do is look into those countries that have it right now and youll see that they are not getting the type of health care that we get here in america. If youre sick anywhere in the world where you want to be is the United States. Because we have the best Health Care System in the world. We have access to Prescription Medications that those countries that you speak of dont have access to. Thats the kind of thing that were talking about here when we talk about socialized medicine, when we talk about medicare for all. I mean, look, with the exception of cancer outcomes, theres no outcome in the United States that is better for a multiple of what other oecd countries cost. But if we do have the best Health Care System in the world, why have south korea, singapore, japan, taiwan all handled this fwhar better than we have . Well, arguably, they were better prepared than we were in this certain situation, but i think weve learned very important lessons here and certainly, were going to be able to do much better next time. And i would question the accuracy of some of those tests, as dr. Birx has pointed out in south korea, their accuracy was not what our accuracy is. So thats very important to keep in mind, as well. Yes, the platform that we were working on to begin with was not suitable for this type of situation. Weve learned that. Weve changed it. Weve did it as quickly as we could, as expediently as we could. Next time we will be much better off for this. Were learning very important lessons. Theres no question about that. Congressman, when this is all over, we dont have to social distance, i would like you to join me. Lets go to a couple of days up to canada and well meet with people and talk to people and i want you to tell me whether we dont have a better Health Care System in canada than we do in the United States. But you and i always agree to talk and well continue our conversation and well get through this and have this conversation on the other side. I always appreciate your time, sir. Thank you. I appreciate being with you and i look forward to going to canada or we could go right across the border in the United States where a lot of those canadians are coming to get health care here in america. Theyre not. Theyre not, congressman. Theyre just not. Ive done this math. But you and i will talk. Congressman buddy carter of georgia. Thank you.
