Guardsman posted this haunting image on facebook as floodwaters overcame his truck write, all i wanted to do was go home. In houston, the San Jacinto River is spilling over its banks. The brazos river doing the same. Several thousand inmates from prisons moved to higher ground. Heres whats the overflowing rivers looked like from the air. Really rough weather. And today its overcast right now, but theyre trying to make the best of it. This guy is pulling out his jet skis hoping to do some business. This gentleman has the umbrellas coming up. There are people down the beach and beach chairs that way. You see people in the water behind me. Hoping for some salvation out of this weekend. They are expecting more rain but thats going to be primarily in the texas area. Janet shamlian in myrtle beach, South Carolina, thanks for that. When can we expect this Severe Weather to let up. Lets bring in meteorologist Bonnie Schneider. What can you tell us . This storm has really been a slow mover. The tropical depression. And thats why the risk for rain and even the rip currents exist straight through this holiday weekend. Were getting precipitation as far north as new york. Its been raining. Heres the latest with our depression bonnie. 30 miles eastnortheast of charleston. Its still onshore moving so slowly to the north at 3 miles an hour. Thats slow movement. That means well be talking about the depression through the middle of the week. Eventually it will become a remnant low off to sea but thats not until friday. It will be a rainmaker through the next few days. Heres the have rain into the outer banks, the jersey shore, maryland, delaware. Likely to see several inches of rain through wednesday. A long haul of it with this storm. Want to show you san antonio, texas. Weve had some really dangerous storms. Its a busy travel day. And these storms have frequent lightning and are heading toward pleasanton. If you are driving on i10 around central texas, watch out for heavy downpours. And the problem is texas just hasnt gotten a break. Wooefr seen a very active Spring Season for storms. And today, 2 Million People at risk. And we could see large hail with this system. Possibly tornadoes. But the main threat is the hail and damaging wind stretching to the northern plains. Another widespread area were watching for Severe Weather. Finally as we see the texas area still getting more rain, several days, memorial day looks good, warm and, steve, out west, temperatures start to really heat up starting tomorrow. All right. A wet welcome to the summer for a lot of the country. Bonnie schneider over in the weather center. Thanks for that. Could be another messy day at one of the nationest biggest airports. This is one of the busiest travel days of the entire year. Long lines at new yorks jfk airport after a computer outage forced airlines to manually check in customers yesterday. That glitch comes at the tsa has been under intense scrutiny for those hourslong security lines people have been enduring. Tens of thousands of passengers missing their flights these past few months. Tony dokoupil is live in orlando at one of the nations busiest airports on one of the busiest travel weekends. Is it the nightmare everyone has been dreading in the security line there . Reporter good morning, steve. So far, no nightmare. You recall weeks leading up to this memorial day weekend, very long lines around the country. On thursday and friday as people were departing, things looked pretty good. As they return to the workweek, things still look pretty good. Orlando is a pretty good case study. This is the morning rush. Its not much of a rush at all. Six tsa officials screening people at the front gate. Additional employees here letting people know, reminding them, take your Water Bottles out. Put your keys in your bag. Get ready for the security lines. Theres 12 conveyor belts open. And the real secret weapon, service dogs. You can see one there. One of the canines. When things get busy they bring in a canine. Langley takes care of customers here. A bomb specialist dog. People sniffed by one of those animals get expedited service. Here at orlando that speeds up the line and those dogs are spread out across this country. No delays reported. No significant delays anywhere nationwide. You see that line moving very quickly behind you there. Tony dokoupil at the airport in orlando. Let me turn to former deputy administrator for the tsa, john holinsky. People seeing that report from orlando may be surprised. Did the tsa get its act together here this weekend . Good morning, steve. Yeah, i think they really did. Tsa had said the administrator, the secretary said there were going to be long lines. They took some immediate steps before this weekend. Things such as authorizing overtime, dogs as we just saw put into the airports. More screeners on duty. And that makes a big difference. Are these changes that we can expect to remain for the coming weeks or when the memorial day weekend fades away, are we going to be talking about two, threehour lines all over again . They are in the process of hiring more screeners. I think with the authorization of overtime they have the money to do that. I think that will reduce the lines. Also these lines, if you look at it, typically between eight and ten airports in the country, the big hubs. The rest of the country doesnt seem to have these lines. They are focusing on the eight to ten category x airports which will be a significant help. And where did this problem come from . Weve had tsa for a while now. Weve had stepped up security at least since 9 11. Why is it seems only in the last few months weve suddenly been seeing the lines like this . Theres a couple of things out there that are the cause. One is, youve had a significant increase in the number of people traveling. I believe its up 15 . At the same time, tsa reduced the number in their workforce based on a ruiskbased model. Theyve shifted to a different type of security model. They hadnt been able to hire the people they needed to do the job in that case. You had more people traveling, more bags, and less screening. Those machines at the check point, they are limited by speed. You have to make sure youre doing a good job. Too many bags, not enough people will cause the lines to back up. And also this preclearance, Precheck Program the tsa has thad would allow people to cut this line. Maybe the best advice for travelers, frequent travelers, is to sign up for that . Absolutely. Tsa has the Precheck Program which is 85 for five years. It allows you to keep your laptop in the bag, keep your shoes on, a light jacket. Its a very good program because they know more about the traveler. The traveler is more trusted. Cbp, Customs Border protection allows you to go into precheck and go through an expedited prois wh process when you go through customs. Very good programs. They make a real difference. John, thanks for joining us. Thank you. And in politics, the california primary, it is just one week from tomorrow. 475 pledged delegates going to be up for grabs on the democratic side. Now in the overall contest, Hillary Clinton continues to have a steady lead over Bernie Sanders. When you add in those superdelegates to the pledge delegate count, thats a lead of over 700 for Hillary Clinton. A win in california, though, would still be very significant for sanders. Hes called the state the big enchilada. Kristen welker is in chappaqua, new york. Thats the clintons adopted hometown. Shes with the Clinton Campaign there. They are a week away from this final round of big primaries, and in a way, Hillary Clinton looks as strong as ever to be the democratic nominee. In other way, shes got a dog fight on her hands out there in california. She really does, steve. The polls in california show its shaping up to be a tight race. Shes up by about two points. But independents can vote in the california primary. So that could benefit senator sanders. Theyve both been aggressively campaigning there. Senator sanders outspending her 2 to 1, vowing to stay in the state through primary day. Also saying hes going to get out more than 200,000 people to rallies before voters go to the polls. For her part, secretary clinton also up with ads there. Shes opened Nine Campaign offices. Thats more than senator sanders has. I spent the better part of last week there with her as she barnstormed the state. For secretary clinton, she wants to win california not because of the math but because of the momentum. A win there would allow her to head into the convention on solid ground. As you say, senator sanders has called the state the big enchilada. Hed need to win the vast majority of votes in order to catch clinton in the delegate count. One of clintons top surrogates, Dianne Feinstein all but said the race is over. But sanders defiant on meet the press saying hes not going anywhere. And he was asked if hed consider being secretary clintons vp pick. Would you take the call if Hillary Clinton asked you to be her running mate . Well, right now, again, what i am here we are in california. Im trying to win the democratic nomination. Thats where i am right now. What happens afterwards, we will see. But right now, my focus is on winning the nomination. Reporter steve, in terms of strategy, secretary clinton is going to spend the next few days starting wednesday in new jersey. Thats a state that could give her enough delegates to clinch the nomination even before all the votes in california are counted. Her goal is to try to pivot to the general election and donald trump. Steve . Kristen welker with the Clinton Campaign in chappaqua, new york, thanks for that. Let me bring in the president and executive director of the Courage Campaign. Thats a Progressive Organization out there in california. Eddie kurtz joins us from california. Were a week away. The polls, the most recent poll there out of your state says a twopoint race. Hillary clinton 46, Bernie Sanders 44. When you look at the overall delegate math here, Hillary Clinton looks like shell have the numbers no matter what what does it mean if Bernie Sanders wins california next week . I think it means a tremendous amount. California is the future of thouthe Democratic Party. The first majority minority state. We look like america will look in the future. A huge latino voter base here. If Bernie Sanders were to win california, it would be an atomic bomb going uf. In what sense . It doesnt mean Hillary Clinton suddenly wont be the democratic nominee. If Bernie Sanders wins it, is it a message that Hillary Clinton did something wrong . I think its a message that her message is not resonating with voters. California voters are primed for bernies message. Income inequality is a huge job here. Jobs and the economy are the num are about one thing californians knair. And the bottom line is its a huge issue in democratic strongholds, particularly los angeles and the bay area. Theres more millionaires and billionaires in california than any other state. And the cost of rent in los angeles and the bay area is sky high. People are struggling to make ends meet. Theyre primed for bernies message. Any sense among democrats, the likelihood here and Kristen Welker just talked about this when you add these superdelegates to the pledge delegates, if Hillary Clinton gets the win people are expecting in new jersey, shed probably cross the number there. Any sense in california that, hey, got to think about unifying the party here and beating donald trump and the republicans in the fall and getting past the Sanders Clinton fight. Theres no question the number one goal for any democrat is to beat trump. But the time for unity is after the primaries are over. You cant take that away from all these people that have come out passionately supporting sanders once we get through these primaries, theres a time for that conversation. It sounds like you expect Bernie Sanders to win next week in california. You know, the late signs really point to him. The fact independents can vote makes a huge difference here. Independents can vote in the democratic primary but not the republican primary here in california. That being said, hillary has an enormous operation here, an amazing operation. She has more endorsements than anyone else up and down the state. California loves the clintons. California loved bill. Hillary beat barack obama here eight years ago. I do think bernie has a great chance to win. If he does, man, what an upset. Eddie kurtz from the Courage Campaign in california. Thanks for the time. Thanks, steve. Up next, gary johnson. He accepts the Libertarian Partys nomination for president. And wastes no time slamming donald trump. How the libertarian candidate who did not win the nomination found his own way to steal the show. The Libertarian Party again choosing former new mexico governor gary johnson as its candidate for president. And johnson wasted no time going after donald trump. 50 of the population of new mexico that hes talking about hispanics and mexicans in this way when the absolute opposite is true. Its just racist. And at their convention yesterday, the libertarians chose johnsons preferred running mate. Former Massachusetts Governor william weld. Hell run for Vice President on the libertarian ticket. As the Libertarian Party tries to present itself as a serious alternative, though, this happened. The candidate for Party Chairman stripped down to his skivvies and danced before leaving the stage to a chorus of boos. All this played out live on cspan. Thats how youre getting the video youre looking at. Lets bring in matt welch. The coauthor of the declaration of independents, how libertarian politics can fix whats wrong with america. And john updike, which advocates for primary reform. Matt, look, this is the opportunity for the Libertarian Party. Its been around about 40 years. Ballot access in all 50 states. You have a ticket of two former twoterm governors. The most on paper credible ticket the libertarians have put up and two Mainstream Party candidates with record high negative numbers. There s there is an opportunity for libertarians. The key is to get into polls before the debates. Most polls have not included gary johnson. Its going to be hard to keep them out of National Polls when william weld is in it. He gets Media Attention and has a bit of credibility. Three of the four polls ive seen johnson in, hes getting around 10 . Youd need an average of 15 this fall to be getting into these debates . Getting polled in the first place gets you in the door. If he gets a lot of tens and then closer to 15, this starts the cascade of ifs. The major Party Candidates could still say i dont want to debate the third party. Then he wouldnt have to go in. Its tough to get there but theres a way to do it. What about that . Weve had one general election in modern times, 1992, where that Third Party Candidate, ross perot, got on the stage that year. If ever there were a recipe for another option to emerge, this is it in 2016. Absolutely. I think theres a big challenge for this tick chet is and for the Libertarian Party which is how theyll sell themselves to the American People. Is the Libertarian Party going to sell the johnson weld ticket as an alternative party or alternative two parties. A big narr tough hative has bee the big outcry for a change in the system. Changes to the party rules and end to all forms of voter suppression. I think choosing johnson and weld is an indicator from the Libertarian Party they want to tap into that antiparty sentiment in the country. And i think that means, and thats right if they can get to 15 and be in the debates, its going to be an interesting general. I dont have much of a life. What struck me was, we showed that clip. Youve got interesting characters that come to a gathering like the Libertarian Party convention. Gary johnson put a challenge to those delegates. A lot of them did not want to vote for weld to be the vp. He said, look. This is a test of the maturing party. You have to go with your head and not your heart. The basic split between the radicals and the pragmatists, the purists who want the best possible message out there in this educational process of the president ial campaign and those who say we need to have the most attractive and widespread appeal there. The pragmatist won in a route. If you are watching on c span some of the debates, gary johnson and weld got booed the loudest during this. And it was close. Weld for the vp slot was by five or six votes. Gary johnson won on the second ballot but wasnt seriously challenged. They like him by now. Theyre familiar with him. But weld joined the Libertarian Party about two weeks ago. Dropped at the last minute here. He has some history in new york with running in the Libertarian Party that went pear shaped on him. There was antipathy towards him. People went for him out of a desire to help johnson. He really said, look. Without him, im running a marathon on one leg. I cant really do this. Trust me. We can get into those polls and debates with this guy there. And people said, all right. Well trust you this year because its a unique opportunity with not just two unfavorable candidates but they are both even for within their kind of Party Traditions kind of statists from the libertarian point of view. Donald trump is a Big Government authoritarian for a republican. Hillary clinton is, i think, to the left of barack obama in some ways and a nanny state type of person. So theres an opportunity here. And, john, we talk about the libertarians being another option. Also bill christal, a republican activist said theres going to be another credible third party option emerging. Hes been talking about trying to get mitt romney and ben sass from nebraska, maybe tom coburn. These are names all that have been floated. Theyve all said no publicly. Do you put anything into what were hearing from bill kristol right now . Theres always speculation about the miraculous Third Party Candidate. The biggest story is independent voters have become a driving force. Theyve been driving this whole primary process. Theyve propelled trump and sanders. And attention thats emerged is that both parties, all parties want the votes of independents come november. Theres going to be a scramble for that. But theyre reluctant to give them the recognition, the respect that theyre asking for. And certainly thats why changes to the system itself has become such an issue in this campaign. And independent voters have been driving this conversation. And Ballot Access is for grownups, not people making up renegade parties on the internet. Its tough work because of the system. If this kristol thing does materialize, theyve already missed the deadline in texas and North Carolina and maybe illinois. Libertarians have all 50 states they will have all 50 states. Thank you for joining us. Be sure to watch mtp daily tomorrow. Chuck todd will have the first joint interview with that ticket. The libertarian ticket, gary johnson and bill weld. An estimated 34 Million People are hitting the roads this memorial day weekend. That is an increase of more than 2 from last year. And it comes just as gas prices are hitting their 2016 highs. Rising to an average of 2. 32 a gallon. Higher gas prices may not be all bad news. Here to tell us why is robin, the host of full disclosure on npr one and a special correspondent for pbs news hour. Gas prices were sky high for the longest time and then started to come down. Now theyre starting to tick up a bit. Whats going on . Whats driving this . Nobody understands whats driving it. It used to be opec driving it. And then the saudi arabia split away from opec because it wanted to flood the plain with its cheapest oil in the world to snuff out the producers in iran and here in the United States where north dakota suddenly is bigger than the smallest member of opec, ecuador. Theres a price war and a market share war. This is worrisome. Youd think the biggest producer of oil in the world would want oil prices to go up. If it goes up too much, suddenly the american producers are viable again. It reflects the United States economy is healthy. Theres a ton of people driving. Youre seeing these massive suvs out there en masse like we havent seen in a decade. Its not just an if then scenario about one variable. Whats the outlook . Were talking about memorial day weekend. The price is rising. The whole summer ahead of us. People are back out there on the roads. Are we looking at a summer of rising gas prices, do you think . It could be. Again, we dont know what the saudis want to do with this. Are they going to let prices go up again . Theres a break even mark of 55, 65 a barrel for a lot of the players in the United States who have only come online the last six or seven years. Do the saudis want to look at it and flood the plain even more. Were seeing iran bring tremendous production online. Its not the traditional supply demand dynamic we used to see in the past that you can say this purely reflects a good economy. A lot of more nefarious things are at play. And there is zero unanimity about where prices are headed. Were talking about prices that for right now are higher. Ill keep the bad news coming. We also had janet yellen from the fed hinting at an Interest Rate hike. Growth looks to be picking up from the various data that we monitor. And if that continues, and if the labor market continues to improve, and i expect those things will occur, its appropriate, and ive said this in the past. I think for the fed to gradually and cautiously increase our overnight Interest Rate over time. And probably in the coming months such a move would be appropriate. Trying to think, whats the cliche here . No good deed goes unpunished . You get good Economic News and have to follow it up with Something Like this . The cliche is the metaphor of weaning the patient from this drug, this painkiller that the u. S. Economy at least and the Global Economy have been used to zero percent Interest Rates since the end of 2008. Were in the middle of 2016. Look at the most um poimportante in the world is the United States main Interest Rate which the Federal Reserve controls. If that is tweaked too rapidly, what about weak players like brazil, china, are their economies going to crash . Weve never been this interconnected. Yet i dont envy her job because were nowhere near a natural, normal Interest Rate. Youre still seeing banks thinking you theyre doing you a favor by giving you a checking account. Thank you. Election, donald trump trying to win support from americas veterans. The Presumptive Republican nominee addressing 5,000 people at a motorcycle rally in washington, d. C. , yesterday. The annual Rolling Thunder event draws thousands to raise awarness of veterans issues. Trump is promising ting to fix veterans care. He says a full accounting is coming soon. Our veterans have been treated so badly in this country. You have a secretary that last week said, no, the wait time doesnt matter. Forget about wait time. I know people and ive gotten to know so many vets. We just raised almost 6 million for the vets because i didnt do a television show. Iy is lets do this. And were announcing on tuesday all of the groups we put up this money and raised this tremendous amount of money because we love the vets. All right. Hallie jackson joins me from washington, d. C. We had donald trump talking at a Rolling Thunder yesterday. Bill kristol out there making news yesterday and this morning saying theres going to be an independent ticket coming soon. Wouldnt name names there. A lot of speculation on who that might be, if anyone at all. What are you hearing from the Trump Campaign . Lets start about the veterans fundraiser. Tomorrow hes holding a press conference at trump tower in new york. Well be there. Were headed to manhattan for that event. We expect to hear a list of what kind of money hes given to which groups. This has been a question thats dogged him for several months since he held that fundraiser, questions about where that money was being directed, who that money is going toward. Theyed ed twanted to make sure vet these groups. You saw some protests from various folks and organizations about this exact issue. Trump, meanwhile, has sort of pivoted, obviously, to the general election. One of the talking points thats been a part of his campaign since he clinched the republican nomination with that magic number 1,237 last week has been that hes done so prior to the democrats. Before Hillary Clinton will do so. Before the california primary june 7th. Its a theme his Campaign Aide hit over the weekend as well. Listen to what Paul Manafort had to say. Trouble follows the clintons everywhere. People are frustraited with all of the drama around the Clinton Family n the history of the Clinton Family. Certainly if theyll be back in the political picture, then their history is relevant to what the American People can expect. And the other point that bill kristol has talked about somebody coming out as a Third Party Candidate. Theres a lot of question marks about who he is talking about, when this might happen. Sources are telling me to keep an eye out for something potentially later this week. Most are being tight lipped about what could be happening. With every passing day those ballot deadlines in states start coming and going. Hallie jackson in washington, thanks for the time. Susan del persio is a republican strategist, and Jimmy Williams is the host of decode d. C. And a former Senior Adviser to dick durbin. Susan, lets start on this question of bill kristol, third party. The libertarians are putting up a very credible third party alternative. Kristol saying maybe more are on the way. If he actually puts up a third party now, would some of the interest in the Libertarian Party going, what happens to one of those candidates being able to get 15 in the polls and leading to being able to be in the debates this fall. Thats what it all comes down to for a Third Party Candidate to be viable, they have to get 15 . They need to be in the debates or otherwise its all for naught. I wonder if having bill kristols candidate and l libertarian ticket of johnson and weld split it when it comes to the polling. Jimmy, i was struck by something hallie was saying when talking about Paul Manafort making the argument about the clintons being an issue in this campaign. We talk so much about Donald Trumps negative ratings. And they are really through the roof. The least popular nominee the republicans have put forward in modern times. Hillary clinton is going to be the least Popular Democratic nominee. That is exactly right. But guess what . You have a d thats going to be the nominee, an r thats going to be the nominee and someone is going to vote for either one of them. The last time an actual independent ran was ross perot in 1992. He got 20 million votes, less than 20 of the vote. He won no states. Didnt even come close. The time before that was 1912. And susan is right. Theyve got to get this weld johnson ticket has to get even above 15 for them to even be viable. And then theyre both former republican governors. I dont see them peeling that much off from the democrats, even though secretary clinton remains somewhat unpopular. When you walk into that voting booth, youll vote for someone or against someone. Donald trump, theres a lot to vote against. We talk about the ticket. The libertarians put up two former twoterm governors. This is a solid, credible ticket. Well see who Hillary Clinton picks. Donald trump, this is the big question now. Who does he turn to to fill out that ticket . A lot of people are talking about Newt Gingrich or senator corker. He may do something to surprise us and go with former senator scott brown from massachusetts. Hes now in new hampshire. He was the first senator, current or former, to endorse trump a week before new hampshire. He fits thats populist build. An independent thinker. When he wants to do that blue collar pickup truck walking through the rust belt, it will play very, very well. I wouldnt be surprised if it becomes one of the top choices. Thats a very smart name to keep an eye on. Theres a lot to be said for that. From Hillary Clintons standpoint, what do you think for a running mate for her . I think she is weakest in the rust belt. She has to look there. Obviously sherrod brown, the junior senator from the state of ohio would be a good pick. Theres a problem with that. If, in fact, she does pick him, and she wins, guess who gets to appoint his successor . And that would be the sitting governor, john kasich. Youd lose that senate seat. And an already tight year for the senate elections. But i would look to the rust belt for Something Like that. It just makes more sense. That seems to be where with that labor vote, that union vote, she needs that voice, that strong voice from working families. Blue collar families. And that would go a long way. Jimmy williams, susan del persio, thanks for joining us this memorial day. Thank you. Up next, well break down the odds on which party, which candidate is is going to win those key battleground states that could make or break the 2016 race. Its tomb for question the your business entrepreneur of the week. With orders coming in from around the globe, ray sickles had to learn how to export. The owner of gerkies was nervous as first but practice made perfect. Hes now shipping his companys happenmade rope sandals to about two dozen countries around the world. For more watch your business sunday morning at 7 30 on msnbc. In politics, just like gambling, sometimes you have to risk more to win. But like gambling, those political risks dont always pan out. 12, 16, 21. So who is going to risk it all and win big in the swing states come november . Lets take a look at the odds with msnbcs cal perry. This is one of my favorite things to do. People out there, we talk about the pundits who have opinions. The pundits dont lose money if they are wrong. There are people out there legally and some cases not so legally putting money down on this president ial race. You are looking at where the money is in terms of the swing states, who people think are going to win the swing states . We know who the nominees are going to be, generally. Were starting to see state by state odds. Some bellwether states for you here. Florida here. So heres the way this works. If you have 180 that the Democratic Party is going to win florida, that pays back 100. If you bet 100 the republicans take florida it will pay back that is telling us people are looking at trump versus clinton in florida saying clinton should win florida . These are bellwether states. Florida voter democrat in 2012, 2008 and republican in 2004 and 2000. Right now democrats have an edge in florida, according to sports book, which is an offshore company. If you think the democrats are going to win in florida, you have to put up almost twice as much money. Does that seem fair . Lets compare it. Thats interesting. So basically, democrats are the farite again im seeing here, but tighter. Ohio is a tighter thing. We still dont know who the Vice President ial nominee is going to be on either side really, right . Someone like john kasich swings it, right . If you have a number of ohio possibilities. Sherrod brown. That could change it, too. Sherrod brown would swing that. Thats why its closer. Colorado is not as close. Colorado, runaway for the democrats. Donald trump, no money on donald trump for colorado. Agone, people betting 100 on trump in colorado if he were to win that state basically 3 to 1. Bet 100, youll win 290 back if you bet republicans and trump carries the state. On paper, colorado is relatively close in 2012 but that has a lot to do with the fast rising latino population in colorado. Thats a population thats the interesting thing about colorado. Its a changing state. The demographics have changed so much in the last four years. Theres opportunity there to make money. You look at florida, ohio. The betters are saying hillary should win them but trump has a shot. Pennsylvania. This is our last one here. Our big one. The democrats again, huge favorites here. Hillary clinton, minus 290. About 290 to win 100 back. But closer. Colorado and pennsylvania, the same margin four years ago. Now theyre better chance for donald trump there. Cal perry with the numbers, thank you very much. When we come back, a rare gorilla is shot and killed at the cincinnati zoo to protect a 3yearold child who entered its enclosure. Were going to talk to renowned zoo keeper jack hanna. Thats next. O you can check on them. You can worry about them. You can even choose a car for them. mom honey, are you ok . child im ok. announcer vo love. mom were ok. announcer vo its what makes a subaru, a subaru. Can give you ans advantage. Gether like trubiotics with immune support advantage. Its unique formula supports immune health in two ways. With probiotics that work in your gut. And antioxidants that work throughout your body. Trubiotics from one a day. Right. In. Your. Stomach watch this . Yikes, that ice cream was messing with you, wasnt it . Try lactaid, its real ice cream, without that annoying lactose. Lactaid. Its the milk that doesnt mess with you. A 3yearold boy in ohio has been released from the hospital after a frightening encounter at the cincinnati zoo. It ended with a gorilla being shot dead. We warn you, some of these images may be disturbing. The 450pound gorilla cornered the boy after the child fell into the animals exhibit. At one point dragging him through the water. The zoos director says the only option to save the child was to fatally shoot the gorilla. Weve never had a situation like this at the cincinnati zoo where a dangerous animal needed to be dispatched in an emergency situation. But the team did a good job and they made a tough choice and they made the right choice, because they saved that little boys life. It could have been very bad. The childs family released this statement. Quote, we are so thankful to the lord that our child is safe. He is home and doing just fine. We extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action by the cincinnati zoo staff. We know that this was a very difficult decision for them, and that they are grieving the loss of their gorilla. We hope that you will respect our privacy at this time. Joining me now on the phone is the director emeritus of the columbus zoo in ohio, jack hanna. Jack hanna, of course, also the host of a hit Television Series jack hannas into the wild and jack hannas wild countdown. Let me ask you, you know this as well as anyone, a lot of people looking at that video and saying, sure, it could be a scary situation but are we sure that gorilla was trying to do harm to that child. Yes, number one. Ten seconds let me say this. The columbus zoo and cincinnati zoo, have a home and millions of dollars our zoos have to keep these dollars alive in the wild and in the zoos as well. As you just asked the question, the danger there if you know these animals was right there. For example, the response when you saw that gorilla drag him through the thing, all the noise people were making up above, that was unusual. That was a silverback, by the way. His responsibility is to take care of his family. With that noise, he was not happy. Ive seen them take a coconut. You cannot even open them with a hatchet and they can squish it like a marshmallow. Lets say a dart hit that animal. Ive studied gorillas by the way and watched this. Its like if you get a shot in the bottom. Youre going to jump. You take a 500pound animal and gets a tranquilizer that way, it takes five to ten minutes. He definitely would have jumped. If he had ahold of the boy, you could already see the gorilla in that mechanism of being upset. Anybody will tell you that in those gorillas. Who knows what could have happened there so quickly. Jack hanna, director emeritus of the columbus zoo. Thank you, jack. That is going to wrap up this hour on msnbc. Im steve kornacki. Chris jansing is coming up next. Which control this joystick. No, im actually over at the ge booth. Were creating the operating system for industry. Its called predix. Its gonna change the way the world works. Ok, im telling my brain to tell the drone to get you a copy of my resume. Umm, maybe keep your hands on the controller. Look out ohhhhhhhhhh. You know what, im just gonna email it to you. Yeah thats probably safer. Ok, cool. It was all pencil and paper. Started out, the surface pro is very intuitive. I can draw lightly, just like i would with a real pencil. Ive been a forensic artist for over 30 years. I do the composite sketches which are the bad guy sketches. You need good resolution, powerful processor because the computer has to start thinking as fast as my brain does. I do this because i want my artwork to help people. Good morning, everye. Im chris jansing. 10 00 a. M. On the east coast, 7 00 a. M. On the west. This is memorial day. Ahead this hour, tropical depression bonnie, that storm moving up the eastern seaboard and spoiling a lot of holiday plans. Well go live to South Carolina. Its another busy travel day. The tsa scrambling to keep up with long lines at airports across the country. But we begin with the race for the white house. The presumptive gop nominee firing back as speculation mounts there could be a competitive thirdparty challenger. The provocative comments coming from bill kristol who tweeted, just a heads up this holiday weekend. There will be an independent candidate, an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance. Well, donald trump quickly responded with a storm of tweets. Among them, the Republican Party has to be smart and strong if it wants to win in november. Cant allow lightweights to set up a spoiler indy candidate. Hallie jackson is live in washington, d. C. So were going to have a libertarian candidate that emerged yesterday, gary johnson. Now theres word of a possible thirdparty candidate, a different, i guess, kind of thirdparty candidate. What are you hearing from the trump folks . Right. Another sort of candidate. That makes four in the race if this person were to materialize, chris, and thats still a question question mark. What were hearing from the campaign, look at what donald trump has been tweeting, this idea as he says if somebody comes forward it would be a lightweight indie candidate and he believes that wouldnt be good for the party. He doesnt want more competition. Hes already fending off potentially Hillary Clinton or maybe Bernie Sanders, although it looks like clinton is the more likely option and gary johnson now who over the weekend became that libertarian nominee. Trump has a lot on his plate this week, chris. Not only is he looking at potentially rumblings of an independent candidate. Sources are telling nbc news that maybe something will happen over the coming week, although well see. Weve heard that before time and again. Hes also looking at tomorrow a press conference at trump tower in which hes promised to reveal what kind of money is going to what kind of veterans groups after a fundraiser earlier this year. And then were also looking at Trump University documents which will be unsealed by a court prior to june 2nd. Thats according to an order by a judge. Trump university, the business dealings there have been the target of, for example, the Clinton Campaign. They have been going after trump on this or at least are looking at doing so. You saw that from trumps rivals during the primary as well, an opening to draw contrast with trump and point out what they call unsavory business dealings. Youve heard rumblings that that may be a big line of attack coming forward in the general election. Trump has brushed a lot of that off and well see what he has to say tomorrow at that news conference. Chris . Hallie jackson, thanks so much for that. Lets go over to the democratic side now where Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are in a race to the nomination. The two spent most of last week in california where Bernie Sanders is looking to make his final stand in his effort to become the democratic nominee. The delegate count heavily favors secretary clinton. Shes just a scant 79 away from clinching if superdelegates stick with her. Kristen welker is in chappaqua, new york, where the clintons will take part in a parade as they do every memorial day. So lets start with this argument thats obviously the crux of the sanders campaign, which is that hes stronger against donald trump. Shes fighting this twofront battle, one with Bernie Sanders, one against donald trump. Lets start on the sanders front. Whats the strategy between now and june 7th when california and four other states vote . Well, chris, they do keep point to those polls that show he does better against donald trump than secretary clinton. They have been pretty consistent now. His focus, squarely on california. Over the weekend he called that state the big enchilada. He is defiant in the face of some of secretary clintons top surrogates urging him to get out of the race. He says hes in it until the very end. Hes outspending secretary clinton on the air waves 21, vowing to bring out more than 200,000 people to Campaign Events before primary day, and he says hes not leaving the state until the voters head to the polls. For her part secretary clinton has also been aggressively campaigning in the golden state. I spent the better part of last week with her there. She has Nine Campaign offices opened up. The challenge for senator sanders, as you know all too well, youve been with him on the campaign trail, is of course the math. Secretary clinton has almost put this race out of reach. In order for him to come close to catching her in delegates, hes got to not only win california, win the vast majority of votes there. He has acknowledged that is going to be a difficult task but hes not giving up. Secretary clinton interestingly heads to new jersey on wednesday. Shes going to spend a fair amount of time there this week. The reason, chris, that state also pivotal to her chances. If she wins new jersey, particularly by a large margin, she could get enough delegates to clinch the nomination before all of the votes in california are cast, so that is what we are looking at as we head into this pivotal week. Before i came back to new york, i talked to senator sanders about whether or not hed consider a vp slot. Heres what he told me. Would you accept the Vice President ial slot . Right now i am trying to become the democratic nominee. And thats where my focus is on right now. What happens the day after, it appears im not going to be the nominee, thats subject for further discussion. It is subject for further discussion. The whole process is subject to further discussion. Maybe you will become the nominee. I dont think so. All right. We dont know. Well, we do know that. We do know that pretty clearly. But is he on any list that youve heard about or seen . My money is on you, chris, first of all. Oh, great. I dont think secretary clinton is considering him as one of her top picks. Doesnt say that shes ruling him out. And, chris, what was so interesting about your exchange with senator sanders is that hes not ruling out the prospect of becoming her Vice President ial nominee. Over the weekend insistent, as he was with you that he is keeping the focus on trying to win the nomination for himself, but he also had a little warning for secretary clinton, that she should pick a progressive candidate. So that makes you think of someone like Elizabeth Warren. As woe know Elizabeth Warren has been an attack dog against donald trump in recent days. So secretary clinton undoubtedly looking at all of her options. But, chris, shes still first got to clinch the nomination and she hasnt dhaone that yet. I want to ask you about the article in the New York Times today and it questions what sort of her strategy. Shes running this Traditional Campaign in a nontraditional year. Are they going to pivot in some ways. Everyone is saying whats going to happen. Weve already seen some of the things that donald trump is throwing at her. All bets are off. Are they really committed to running the campaign that they would have planned six months ago when they didnt think donald trump was going to be the nominee . Well, they acknowledge that donald trump is an unconventional candidate. So they acknowledge that every day they have got to wake up and approach this ball game in a whole new way. At the same time as you saw in that times article that you cited, they are insistent that the way to take on donald trump is to look at his business practices, which hallie was just talking about, to try to draw sharp distinctions with him, particularly over some of his controversial comments about women, about minorities, but to ignore some of his more personal attacks that hes making against secretary clinton and former president bill clinton. Now, you have some democrats who say shes got to get tougher. And, chris, we asked the campaign about this every day. Do you need to get tougher. They insist this is the right strategy right now, but again, there is an awareness that theyre going to have to be able to pivot at various points. So could they change their strategy . It is possible. At this point not happening in the immediate future. Chris. Nbcs Kristen Welker out in chappaqua, thank you so much. Lets go now to columbia, South Carolina, where we find the former South Carolina gop chair and in washington, craig veroga, president of a democratic leaning group focused on tea Party Candidates. Gentlemen, good morning. Good morning. Glad to be here. Craig, weve got these two historically unpopular likely candidates in donald trump and Hillary Clinton with such high negatives. Do you think that this means theres a better chance for an outside candidate to make a play this election . Do you think something realistic could happen from what were hearing from the stop trugroupsd bill kristol. I dont know if mitt romney and bill kristol are trying to faek it till they make it to find a candidate to run. Donald trump is the thirdparty candidate. He is borrowing the Republican Party this year. Third parties operate better in speculation and hypotheticals in may and june than they do in november. They usually lose about half of their support. I wouldnt underrate it as a potential variable in the outcome of the election, but a thirdparty nominee, regardless of what the party is, is not going to win the presidency. Maybe not win the presidency, but caton do you think republicans are worried they could play spoiler as weve seen has happened in the past . Woe watched it with ross perot so certainly could be a spoiler. I just dont think its possible. I havent seen the donor whos willing to make a thirdparty race real or one that could be funded. So im not worried about the thirdparty race. Im not so much worried about the libertarians. Gary johnson polled 1 . What were worried about is the momentum. And what craig just said, its going to be a long, hot summer. Bernie sanders being considered as Vice President for Hillary Clinton does cause us some concern on my side. There are disaffected voters in both parties. So its going to be a long, halt, interesting summer with the two candidates the way theyre doing. As the clintons are now finding out, running against trump like we found out on the republican side, theres a whole new play bok to handle and deal with him. Craig, do you think Hillary Clinton should consider Bernie Sanders and do you think that would give angst to republicans . She does have a passionate following. I dont think Bernie Sanders is running for Vice President. I think the most interesting thing is that he was giving secretary clinton advice about who her running mate should be and he was willing to answer that question. That is not what candidates who are in serious competition for the nomination say a week or couple days before the primary. So you think hes setting himself up to be influential as opposed to really being the nominee . I think he wants a major role in affecting the platform of the Democratic Party and the future of the Democratic Party and in choosing and playing in primaries in the future, but i would be shocked if he was the running mate. So katon, let me ask you, you have not endorsed anybody yet. You and i spoke when the South Carolina primary was under way and you hadnt endorsed. You still havent endorsed. What are you waiting for . Donald trump is our nominee. Well be with him and behind him. Were cautious. When youve run as many races as weve run, trump out there is a new phenomenon that were dealing with and so were watching both sides. Donald is going to put his people in place in the convention. Hes not going to own or change so much the Republican Party and convention, hes the presumptive nominee, hes there. Lets see what he does. I dont think the platforms either way are going to matter a whole lot to the general election public. I do disagree with craig. I think Bernie Sanders is in the same place nixon was with john f. Kennedy. The base of the Democratic Party are serious and weve watched those numbers. You caught bernie by surprise in that interview and i think that was very telling on his negotiating power of who and what hes going to be in the future of the democrat party. Could i jump in on that just a second. Sure, go ahead. I think that the Republican Party is divided. You know, what you just heard is somebody who hasnt made public what their position on the nominee is. Thats happening up and down the board. The Republican Party will remain divided. I believe that donald trump doesnt have any moral cord, doesnt believe in anything. He has taken over and borrowed the Republican Party. But the failure of the republicans who are supporting him is that they are willing to support a demagogue that they know is not fit to be president and that really is what this election is going to be about and thats why Hillary Clinton when she wins the nomination is going to be elected president. Craig, katon, great to see both of you. Thank you. Happy memorial day day. Happy memorial day to you both. Lets turn to that story out of cincinnati, ohio. The reaction has been intense following the cincinnati zoos decision to use lethal force against a gorilla to save a 3yearold child who fell into the animals exhibit. I want to go live to nbcs blake mccoy. First, blake, hows that little boy doing this morning . Reporter chris, good morning to you. That child was serious lly injud and taken to the hospital but has since been released and will be okay. Hes back home with his family this morning. And now there are growing calls for these parents to be charged with neglect. We want to warn our viewers some of you may find parts of this video disturbing. Cell phone video capturing the horrifying moment, a 3yearold boy coming face to face with a 400pound gorilla after falling into the enclosure at the cincinnati zoo saturday. You hear his mothers desperate calls. Mommy loves you. Visitors watched the gorilla pick the boy up and drag him through the water. You heard the splash and people were yelling. Theres a boy in the water, theres a boy in the water. Witness kim oconnor said the boy had been talking about wanting to go in the water. His mother was watching several other children when the boy slipped through the railing and past wires to enter the enclosure. Ten agonizing minutes go by about zoo keepers decide to hoot the western gorilla with a rifle. It seemed very much boy our professional team to be a lifethreatening situation. And so the choice was made to put down or shoot harambe and so hes gone. They say a tranquilizer would have taken too long. On social media people blamed the childs mother. One writing while i am very sorry a child was hurt, i am angry that parental negligence caused the death of this magnificent animal. On sunday, protesters calling for justice. He dont have a voice anymore, they gunned him down so we have to be his voice. I feel like they did this animal wrong and the mother should be held accountable. Reporter the family said we are so thankful to the lord that our child is safe. He is home and doing just fine. We extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action boy cincinnati zoo staff. We know that this was a very difficult decision for them and that they are grieving the loss of their gorilla. The incident comes just one week after zoo keepers in santiago, chi e, shot and killed two lions after a man jumped into their den, took off his clothes and began taunting the animal. In cincinnati the exhibit is temporarily closed while a memorial grows for the gorilla who had just celebrated his 17th birthday. Gorillas can live up to 50 years old in the wild and captivity. Right now there is an online petition on change. Org urging charges against those parents. They want them charged with neglect. More than 100,000 people have signed that petition in the last 24 hours, but so far police have not indicated any plans to press charges. Chris. Blake mccoy in cincinnati. Thank you. Up next, well turn back to the race for the white house. Libertarians picking their ticket. Is this the moment for them to move into the mainstream . Together, were building a better california. And we are back with the new x factor in the president ial race, the third party some say could tip the outcome in november. The Libertarian Party choosing former new Mexico Republican governor gary johnson as its president ial nominee, just as it did in 20 tw12. He wasted no time taking aim at donald trump. Incendiary to 50 of the population of new mexico that hes talking about hispanics and mexicans in this way when the absolute opposite is true. Its just racist. The libertarians also chose johnsons preferred running mate, former massachusetts republican governor bill weld as their vp. Buts at then this happened. A candidate for party chair stripping down to his skivvies, dancing before he left the stage to a chorus of boos and cspan viewers got to see it all live. Joining us now live the Libertarian Party candidate for u. S. Senate in maryland. Good morning, happy memorial day. Thanks for having me on. So when i saw the stripping, i thought to myself as somebody whos been out on the Bernie Sanders campaign and frankly of talked to a lot of people who said if hes not the nominee on the democratic side theyre going to look for somebody other than Hillary Clinton, wow, was that an opportunity missed. Thats not really taking things seriously. Are you concerned about the message that sent from your partys nominating convention . What the Bernie Sanders supporters have seen is democrats and republicans turning the entire educational system into a total travesty. Listen, that was foolish, it was a travesty, we booed him off the stage, its never going to happen again. But whats also going to keep happening unless you vote libertarian is Higher College tuitions and worse schools. If you vote libertarian as so many sanders supporters are certain to do, theyre going to see huge decreases in College Tuition, huge improvements in schools. The end of common core, the federal government out of education, more freedom and more choice for parents in terms of their childrens educations. Thats not a different platform, however, than it was in 2012 and thats not a different candidate than in 2012. Gary johnson was also the president ial nominee and got just 1 of the vote. So what makes you think he might do better this time, especially up against two people as well known as Hillary Clinton and donald trump . First, hes going up against two people who are as well hated as Hillary Clinton and donald trump so that gives him actually a bit of an advantage. The other thing is he has a great running mate, william weld, whos already proven that he is able to cut government. Hes somebody that got rid of so many state employees and started increasing freedoms in massachusetts. Right now while our platform in many ways has become the same, our messaging has become so much clearer, so much stronger. There are more people contacting us every day saying, listen, i wish i voted for you in 2012 or in 2008 or in some previous time because i know that if i had, my College Tuition today would be less, my college debt would be less, i would have my friends and family brought home from overseas who are serving in the military. I would be safer because wed be bringing our troops home instead of creating enemies. So i think this is a very different year than 2012 was. So the people who are calling you and saying they wished for you in 2012, are they giving money . What kind of money do you think you can raise . What kind of money do you think you will need in what is expected to be the most expensive president ial contest ever . Quite frankly, it takes a lot less money to sell a good product than it does to sell a trash product. And were the only party thats selling what the vast majority of americans want. They want to see an end to the war on drugs. They dont want to see that continuing. Were saying, listen, lets shut down the dea, lets end the war on drugs, lets release these nonviolent drug offenders from prison. Lets release people like Ross Al Brecht and edward snowden. Our bank raised a record amount. How much money are we talking about . Yesterday we raised 100,000, which might not sound like a lot to you guys, but its the most weve ever raised from a banquet. Our convention has raised over 250,000 before that. What were seeing is an upward trend. Listen, as someone who used to be an actuary, i can recognize a trending and this is an absolute trend in increased fundraising. So many people increased our monthly pledges to the Libertarian Party just yesterday. Thanks for coming on the program. Thank you. Be sure to watch mtp daily tomorrow. So the tsa is facing a pretty big test today as holiday travelers descend on the nations airports after this long holiday weekend. The understaffed tsa has been struggling to keep security lines moving, and some relief could be expected next month when more than 700 new agents join the lines. Will it be enough to keep up with a busy Summer Travel season . Tony dokoupil is live at orlando, one of the nations busiest airports. How are things going so far this morning, tony . Good morning, chris. The three airports to watch today are Miami International airport, chicagos Ohare Airport and new yorks john f. Kennedy airport. The average wait times at those airports have all exceeded 20 minutes and the longs have been more than three hours. Things looked good on thursday and friday across the country and today here in orlando as well as nationwide we are not hearing reports of extremely long lines. This line is moving quite swiftly. Its only about a sixminute wait. And the key here has been some scrambling by the tsa. They have taken parttimers, moved them to full time and most importantly they have taken canines and put them into the security line. These are bombsniffing dogs. If you are sniffed by one of those animals, you get expedited services. Theyre very cute but unfortunately no petting. They have a job to do. Back to you. As you look up on the boards, so most of the flights are going on time . None of this weather that weve been hearing about is affecting the flights going out of there . So far so good. There are no reports of delays either in the security line, with the flights themselves or with the checkin. No computer problems as we saw yesterday at jfk where a glitch led some checkin agents to resort to handwritten tickets, some of them with pencil. None of that today. So far so good but its very earl so well keep you posted. And somebody who didnt want to leave mickey behind. You know, technology could play a key role in easing long lines at andrews. Im joined by andrew hawkins, transportation reporter for the verge. Com. So whats out there on the horizon thats going to help keep things moving at airports . I think right now its mostly a manpower issue. The tsa, as was mentioned before, has experienced a lot of reductions over the years thanks to budget cuts. Theyre down about 12 in terms of workforce. Passenger travel is up about 15 so youre seeing an inverse increase as opposed to the tsas decline but there are some Technology Things on the horizon. I think you see in atlanta, delta just got done building a 1 million innovation security hub that theyre calling it. What it is actually is just a way for simultaneous passengers to run five passengers at a time to come up with the security checkpoints and all put their bags on the conveyor belts. They dont have to stand there and push their bags and belongings through the xray 34 machines. They can put them on the conveyor belts and the wins come back through underneath. Delta spent their own money to build this in atlanta. The hope is that delta will see good numbers from this and it will spread to other airports as well. Meantime, this is also a big travel day on the roads. I spent a lot of time sitting in traffic on the 101 in california saturday, sunday, i dont even remember, ive lost track of days. Is there anything on the horizon technologically that can help keep traffic moving . There are a few things. They are pretty far out. Youve got concepts like highspeed rail, which is under way in california, but thats about 12 billion over budget and way behind schedule. And then youve got far out ideas like the hyperloop, which is something elon musk had proposed. You put a pod inside an airless tube and connect cities via these tubes and you can shoot these pods up to 760 miles an hour. That could reduce travel times, l. A. To San Francisco to 30 minutes. Its pretty far out and a little science fictiony but its something that people think could revolutionize transportation in the future. Andrew, good to see you. Happy memorial day. Happening now, tropical depression bonnie soaking the south. That storm moving up the east coast washing out a lot of memorial day plans. We will go live to South Carolina, next. In texas, six people have died after floodwaters hit parts of the state forcing evacuations. Drone footage shot over the weekend in the woodlands shows washed out streets. And tropical depression bonnie is making its way up the east coast creating risky travel conditions and in some places dangerous surf for beachgoers. Janet shamlian is in myrtle beach, South Carolina, following the coastal threat. Janet, good morning. Im assuming the beaches there are okay. Is there a danger, any warnings there . Reporter the current is a little rough, and theyre asking people to be careful. But frankly people are just going to come out today, chris, because as you can see its gorgeous and the past couple of days have kind of been a washout here. The concern is that this system is so slow moving that its dumping rain wherever it goes. Yesterday here on the beach the reason people are enjoying it so early right now is that the lifeguards were so concerned about riptides that people could only go up to their knees in water. Its a memorial day washout for millions of americans. Tropical depression bonnie making its way up the east coast on sunday, hitting the carolinas the hardest, with drenching rains and flooding. A section of interstate 95 south of charleston submerged. Authorities finally shut it down after too many drivers tried to go through it. In georgia floodwaters submerged not only streets but homes. And while there was sun in myrtle beach, fear of rip currents had some vacationers afraid to go in the water. Im very concerned about my kids being out there. I get nervous when they get further than their knees. Reporter rescuers are still searching for a 21yearold man who went missing in North Carolina late saturday after swimming in rough water. In texas, it was another round of flash flooding. Several communities calling mandatory evacuations. We knew it was coming, but at the same time, you dont prepare for Something Like this to pack up your whole house. Among the deaths in texas, a national guardsman, darren mitche mitchell, who posted this haunting image on facebook as floodwaters overcame his truck, writing all i wanted to do was go home. In houston, the San Jacinto River is spilling over its banks, the brazos river doing the same. Several hundred inmates moved to higher ground. Heres a tweet from what the texas rivers looked like from the air. Back in texas, the death toll has risen to six and they are going to get more rain and severe storms this week. Here in South Carolina theyre catching a break. They have pulled out the boats and people are hoping to salvage what remains of their weekend. Back to you. Janet shamlian, thank you so much. I want to bring in Bonnie Schneider whos been tracking the Severe Weather for us. Bonnie, hows it looking Going Forward . It looks like were getting some of those storms into North Carolina, especially in and around the outer banks. Thats because bonnie, this tropical depression, is very, very slow moving. Unfortunately, its just going to keep dumping the rain in this region. Well be watching for that. Lets take a look at the latest position of the storm. Right now its inland but we are watching for it to slowly meander to the north. This means its going to be a rain maker all the way across the carolinas into virginia. Bands of rain stretching across the jersey shore hitting out in the hamptons on long island to cape cod. Were all impacted by this one storm. Whats happening in texas is a very dangerous situation. We have flash flooding occurring just to the west of san antonio and were looking at a really powerful line of thunderstorms. Look at this lightning on this. This is realtime lightning coming into victoria. Its a dangerous week ahead for much of texas, starting with today. We still have more severe storms in the forecast. 2 Million People are currently at risk. Oh, boy. Bonnie schneider, thank you so much. The cincinnati zoo announcing its director will speak to the media at 3 00 this afternoon. This comes a day after zoo officials fatally shot a gorilla to save a 3yearold boy who fell into the animals exhibit. The incident caught on video, and we want to warn you, some of these images are disturbing. The 450pound gorilla cornered the boy after he fell into the animal exhibit. At one point dragging him through the water. The zoos director said the only option to save the child was to fatally shoot the gorilla. Never had a situation like this at the cincinnati zoo where a dangerous animal needed to be dispatched in an emergency situation. But the team did a good job and they made a tough choice and they made the right choice, because they saved that little boys life. It could have been very bad. The childs family released this statement saying, quote, we are so thankful to the lord that our child is safe. He is home and doing just fine. We extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action by the cincinnati zoo staff. We know this was a very difficult decision for them and that they are grieving the loss of their gorilla. We hope that you will respect our privacy at this time. Joining me on the phone, director emeritus of the columbus zoo of ohio, jack hanna. Its always good to talk to you, jack. It was obviously a very difficult decision that had to be made very quickly. You think it was the right decision . You know, as i said before, no one loves gorillas more than myself. I have a home two miles or so from mountain gorillas in rwanda. Ive worked gorillas at the columbus zoo for 25 years. If you go in your archives, look 20 years ago at the Brookfield Zoo a child fell in, a female gorilla picked him up. They come and get it from her. That gorilla was raised by human beings. Thats not done anymore. Youll see a totally different response. This is a silverback, everybody, which is 400 to 500 pounds. In the wild ive seen them do some things like take a coconut, for example, a green coconut, take this, they can squish it like a marshmallow. The power is unbelievable. And so, therefore, when you see that male gorilla and everybody is screaming, you know, a child dropped in here. All of a sudden his female, part of his family depose in the building. He is saying whats going on. Whats this thing, its a living creature, right . The minute he pulled that child through that water, i thought oh, my god, whats going to happen now. I can tell you one thing, if that had kept on, that child would not be here today. I bet my im going to bet my life. Ill bet my life that child would not be here because that gorilla was upset. You know that when you understand animals. Cincinnati had to thank god they did what they did. No one is hurting now more than cincinnati zoo kepeople and our staff here at well. But i wouldnt want to be sitting here you asking me a question, why in the world did another human being die. Thats what im trying to say. And i guess the one question that i have heard asked and you can help bring some perspective to this is why not tranquilize the gorilla. All right. Because i worked with researchers in the wild who had to tranquilize animals. Their hands have been ripped off, someone had to chew their arms off because of poaching. Weve given millions of dollars to protect these gorillas. All of a sudden you see this kind of thing. Yes, they have to atlantic lotr the animal. If you feel a pop go in your bottom, youre aware of it when youre a human being but you take an animal, and we have to do that when theyre sick or something, obviously theyre going to jump. The last thing we need is to have a big old dart go in this animal. It takes five or ten minutes to take effect. Especially the silverback gorilla, he has duties to protect his family. All this confusion, yelling going on and all of a sudden hes dragging no telling what would have happened in a split second. That child would never even know what happened. So thats where im coming from of knowing the gorillas. Ive been around them for 30 something years and i dont think the child the tranquilization thing would have worked at all. It would have scared the gorilla and no telling, he would have had ahold of this child and this child would be been i dont even want to talk about it. Your expertise invaluable. Jack hanna, always a pleasure to talk to you. Thank you so much. Thank you all. Thank you very much. Up next, were going to turn to the 2016 veepstakes. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders still fighting to be the top name on the ticket and never trump hopefuls still holdings out hope for a hero. Joining me now, dorrie clark, amy holmes, rick tyler, former ted cruz spokesman and an msnbc political analyst. Just to shake things up, i talked to senator sanders late saturday, asked him would you consider a vp slot. Heres what he told me. Would you accept the Vice President ial slot . Right now i am trying to become the democratic nominee. And thats where my focus is on right now. What happens the day after it appears im not going to become the nominee, thats subject for further discussion. It is subject for further discussion. Well, the whole processes subject for further discussion. Maybe youll become the nominee. I dont think so. All right. We dont know. We do know that. But rick tyler, would republicans be nervous if Hillary Clinton named Bernie Sanders and his millions of followers maybe coming along with as her Vice President ial nominee . I think thats right. Bernie sanders has a large constituency of working white voters. That seems to be what this race is about. Not to mention young voters. And young voters, right. The one thing that he has, the under 30 crowd and under 30 women in huge numbers. In very large numbers. If she loses those, it will make it difficult for her to win the nomination. So she needs to pick sanders or Elizabeth Warren. Ladies, either of you think Bernie Sanders would be a good choice . I think its a doubleedged sword. He does have those constituents who have come out to vote with him so they are active, they are passionate, they fill up the stadiums, but hes also a declared democratic socialist and i think the republicans and conservatives would have a field day with defining the Hillary ClintonBernie Sanders ticket as far to the left of most mainstream american voters. Would he help or would he hurt, dorrie . I think theres been too much bad blood between the clinton and sanders camps. I said that about barack obama and Hillary Clinton and she became his closest advisor and good friend. I think its far more likely if she wants to energize the antiwall street voters she would go with Elizabeth Warren. I agree with amy, i think that sanders being a selfdeclared democratic socialist would absolutely hurt the ticket. I dont think theyll go there. Theres only one other designation in american politics that is less popular and that is to be a declared atheist. Rick tyler, so now we have bill kristol saying you wait, we have somebody big, somebody who can make the difference. Weve got the ultimate stop trump candidate. Were going to announce him any minute now. Is he out there . I doubt it. I cant imagine who it would be. They can find someone who has name recognition, who is credible, who has money, but its so difficult to get on all the ballots. Its just not likely that that person could come out triumph t triumphant. The idea, and ive heard a lot of talk it would be thrown to the house of representatives because no one gets the required electoral votes. Can you imagine washington, d. C. , politicians picking the president when we went through the whole process of the republican nomination for donald trump and Hillary Clinton . I think its ridiculous. While we wait anxiously to see if that person is actually going to show up, lets deal with whats reality here. One of the things thats been really interesting is the teflonlike nature of donald trump, right . In fact we had bob dole calling today saying he should apologize to john mccain for his comments about him, given that this is memorial day. Now were waiting for that Trump University lawsuit to be unsealed. Is there something in Donald Trumps past or future that will make a difference to his supporters . Make a difference to his supporters, that is the operative clause there. Is there there, of course there is. Theres a treasure trove of Opposition Research that republicans or Hillary Clinton could throw at donald trump in terms of his past as a businessman and Trump University, for example. He admitted that Trump University that he didnt pick the instructors, as he claimed he had. He admitted this in the depositions. So, yes, you could use it. Will it make a difference for his supporters . So far nothing seems to. So the better question might be, dorie, what about to those independents, undecided, people who are uncomfortable with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. Donald trump has been succeeding thus far because hes perceived as being incredibly authentic. Hes the person who is saying what he thinks. Hes your politically incorrect uncle. And i think that that allows him a wide latitude. When it comes to swing voters and people who may be decided heretofore, i think where clinton could push at him is if shes willing to treat him not as a serious establishment candidate, the way shes been treating him thus far with kid gloves, but really to be willing to take him on in his own language and to begin to poke a hole in him based on the fact that he is bloviating and really trying to put forward a brand that i think overall has really been been outside of the typical candidate. Weve heard her try to start to do that by calling him unqualified and a loose cannon. The kind of rhetoric that isnt even in the same stratosphere as the kind of rhetoric he is using. Its baby steps towards that. But she does have an opportunity if she wishes to take it to frame him in terms of the way that hes treated the little guy in his business dealings. Were talking about Trump University. Also one of his condominium projects that went bankrupt. These were Little People that lost all their money. Amy, dorie, rick, thanks to all of you on this memorial day. Happy memorial day. Happy memorial day. That is going wrap up our coverage this hour. Thomas roberts will pick things up next.
