Im jose diazbalart. Crowds marched in ferguson. We didnt see nearly the kind of chaos we saw the night before. There were no buildings set on fire. Fewer arrests. Thousands of National Guard troops helped keep the peace. A lot of the protesters came out for peaceful protests were actually assisting us tonight. Once again, there are those who are stuck on violence who embed themselves with the Peaceful Protesters. There were indications that peaceful protests were intent on squeezing out. In some areas, violence did break out. Reported at least 45 people were arrested. This Police Car Set on fire. For a second night, the outrage in ferguson brought people into the streets in cities across the country from new york to los angeles. As far south as dallas. As far north as minneapolis. Protesters blocked roads and in some cases clashed with police. At the center of it all, Darren Wilson, the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown. He is speaking out for the first time describing what happened that day. Is there anything you could have done differently that would have prevented that killing from taking place . No. Nothing . No. And youre absolutely convinced when you look through your heart and your mind that if Michael Brown were white, this would have gone down in exactly the same way . Yes. No question . No question. Meanwhile, this morning, browns family is well putting its hopes for justice on the federal investigation. And a possible civil rights case. Were just going to keep fighting. And pray for a better outcome. What do you hope happens . Conviction. Youre hoping hes pursued in federal court . Yes. Nbcs craig melvin has been in the streets both nights and seen the developments up close. He joins us this morning. What do you think made the difference from the first night to the second night . Id say two things. Primarily. First, you mentioned this the presence of the National Guard. The first night we just saw a handful of guardsmen. Last night, there were more National Guard than st. Louis Police Officers. Its been my experience again, this is just from what ive seen over the last this time and my last time here. For whatever reason the protesters, the demonstrators, they seemed far less inclined to engage the National Guard troops than they do the st. Louis police. That was one thing. The second thing this made the biggest difference. We saw this up close firsthand. Members of clergy and good hearted protesters who were here for Michael Brown shouted down folks who might be here to cause trouble. There was one woman who at one point, she came to the front of the scrum and she started screaming at some of the folks who have been tossing some things at some of the guard members. She screams them down. And she goes over to one of them. Shes like were here for Michael Brown. If youre not here for Michael Brown, you can go down the street. They didnt go down street but they did calm down. We also saw i saw four five members of clergy who from time to time it appeared as if the situation might be about to go to the next level. What weve seen happen so many times here. Clergy would step in. Theyd separate the police and the guardsmen from the protesters. They say hey, lets calm down. And that seemed to work. All of that being said there was one incident last night that was noteworthy about a half mile from here. The Ferguson City hall. Its fairly small. Nondescript. We did see a crowd of protesters head down that way. That is where they tried to topple a car, a police car. They tried to flip the car over and set it on fire. They were unsuccessful. 45 people were arrested in and around ferguson last night. Considerably fewer folks than were arrested the night before jose. Craig melvin thank you very much. Appreciate your time. Joining me now, James Peterson director of Africana Studies at lehigh university. Clearly, theres a sense what happened in ferguson is spreading across the country. Theres solidarity there. How do you harness that energy in a positive way . I think, one, we have to acknowledge why its spread nationally. The reason why, this is not just the ferguson problem, this say problem were seeing all over the place. Theres a community in cleveland in angst around the shooting death of a 12yearold. We still have the new York Community with eric gardner. The communities around john crawford. There are people all over who are wrestling with these unjustified and these sort of shooting of unarmed young young people in cities all over the nation. Thats why you can see people across the nation sort of stepping up. I think the way we channel it. The way we use it to focus on issues at hand is making sure we understand what the issues are. There are few things to consider here. Number one, we need a serious overhaul of policing strategies and tacktics when it comes to people of color. That acknowledges two things. One, theres sort of implicit violence that shapes everyones decisions. But also those biases when theyre informing decisions where lethals for can or cannot be used take on much higher stakes. We need a comprehensive effort to try to adjust policing in that specific way. Then we can talk about body cameras and other things weve seen work in other communities around police brutality. As youve seen this bubble up across the nation i hope people engaged in these protests will take direction from some leadership that is trying to organize around these important issues. We showed pictures from new york. These are pictures from los angeles and a lot of opportunities that people are having to show exactly their frustration, frustration they feel theyve been feeling for many many years. The protesters that are shutting down roads, for example, its a highly visible thing. Is it also effective . I mean i dont want to be counted as a rabblerouser here but yes it is effective when protesters are very well trained, very well organized. Impedeing the highways is one way you let them know you mean business when it comes to the issue youre protesting around. Theres important strategic moves. You can tell when people are kneeling down on highways theyve been trained and theres some organization around it and theyre willing to go to jail for this particular cause. Its helping to raise issues around what we think is one of the most troubling causes in america today. I want to talk about that. You were just mentioning a little bit. Theres an issue of what youre saying is just a cultural inability i guess to deal with communities like the africanamerican communities, Latino Community. How do you change that culture . I keep thinking about that all the time. How do you actually get change to occur. Yeah this is a long, longterm proposition im going to make here. I mean one, there has to be a willingness on the part of Police Officers, those who were in power right now, those officers in place right now, to develop along the areas of cultural competence. People need to understand there are very specific things that youth do or dont do. Very specific ways that people of color may communicate. And cultural confidence training for Law Enforcement seems to be absolutely imperative. I think even before we did that people have to understand how bias works and how implicit bias works. When i see officer wilson doing the interview, im seeing something very different than what other people may see, what white people may see. So we have to be able to acknowledge bias and how it shapes how we see things. I think if we did some cultural confidence stuff and embraced the information about bias it would go a long way towards the effort of training our Police Officers in a way where they could serve and protect instead of terrorizing. Thats a lot of work. That requires an overhaul. It requires oversight of that training. It requires willingness, commitment, on the part of Law Enforcement. So interesting when you say were all see things from a different perspective. All of us can at least understand what the other person is seeing better. Even though we may not see it. Thank you so much. This is such an important issue that were discussing. I really appreciate your time. Thank you, jose thank you for having me on. Were going to have much more from the scene in ferguson. This is an issue that really were going to be delving into a lot on this program. Now to the other major story driving the rundown. The busiest travel day of the year is colliding with a major noreaster that could cause chaos at the roads and airports for millions of people. Flights out of the northeast have already been canceled and the worst of it its not even here yet. Take a look at this live picture. Thats richmond virginia. And that is bill karins who will give us this thanksgiving day forecast. Bill, do you have any good news . Not a lot, no. The low clouds are causing problems at the airports now. Arrival delays into philadelphia, an hour and a half delays. When the pilots are coming in they have limited eyesight on the runways. Thats whats causing all the delays. La guardia now reporting threehour arrival delays. This is just the beginning of what is going to be a very long day at the airports. And hopefully not too many people will get stuck and not make their destinations. Now were into the part of the storm where the snow is breaking out. Now in central pennsylvania the poconos. You probably only have an hour or two left before the roads will be covered in the Hudson Valley. Shortly this afternoon into new england. Were almost getting to the point where im going to tell you get off the roads and the highways. Especially central new england, Hudson Valley through the poconos. Its also snowing pretty good interstate 81 through virginia. Snow totals. The blockbuster amounts are going to be more or less the Higher Elevations of central or Northern New England. A good large chunk here. 6 to 12 inches with a few spots a footplus. The big cities on i95 mostly just rain. Baltimore and philly not expecting much, same with areas around boston. Florida got drenched. Areas around Daytona Beach picked up 7 inches of rain yesterday. There were tornado warnings in orlando. This storm is leaving its mark. Its going to be raining down in miami if its not already. Thank you very much. Good to see you. Of course well be staying on top of this very important weather story on this busy travel day throughout the morning. Were just Getting Started on this prethanksgiving edition of the rundown. President obama has a full plate in front of him today. Much more than the annual turkey pardon. Were also learning also about the short list to replace defense secretary chuck hagel. Its whats driving d. C. And six americans who survived ebola together in one place. Talking on today about how thankful they are to be alive. Any second thoughts about the choices you made . Being involved . None. None . It would be okay to say yes. Nobody . I wish id used a little more chlorine. Well hear from them much more later this hour. Let us be lovers, well marry our fortunes together ive got some real estate here in my bag it took me four days to hitchhike from saginaw ive come to look for america when i say xerox, i know what youre thinking. Transit fares as in the 37 billion transit fares we help collect each year. No . Oh, right. Youre thinking of the 1. 6 million daily Customer Care interactions xerox handles. Or the 900 Million Health insurance claims we process. So, its no surprise to you that companies depend on todays xerox for services that simplify how work gets done. Which is. Pretty much what weve always stood for. With xerox youre ready for real business. Burning buildings. Torching cars. Destroying property. Putting people at risk. Thats destructive. Theres no excuse for it. Ive never seen a civil rights law or a Health Care Bill or an immigration bill result because a car got burnt. It happened because people vote. That was president obama calling for a more productive response to the grand jury decision in ferguson. Saying next week the white house will be giving a major review of policing practice in the country. Thats one of the items on the president s todo list. First on his agenda deciding a new secretary of defense. Michele flournoy was said to be a top contender but she says she doesnt want the job. Nbcs Chris Jansing live at the white house. Good morning. Great to see you. Who does that leave on the president s short list . New name surprisingly surfaced last night. Thats Homeland Security secretary jay johnson. Hes worked at the pentagon before as general counsel. Most recently he really earned a lot of respect here. One of the major architects of the immigration plan the president put forward. People say it could make it difficult for his confirmation hearing if nothing else it could make for tough questioning by the republicans. The president would have to replace the person at the top of Homeland Security. A couple of other names are out there. Former number two, Ashton Carter worked at defense under a couple different president s. He is actually a theoretical physicist. He was a harvard professor. He was number two and number three at the pentagon. The current number two who served in the marines is also on that list. Dont necessarily expect anything this week jose. Its a short week first of all. Theres no rush because its clear the senate would not vote on this any way this year. So theres really no reason for them to hurry. What can you tell us about negotiations on tax breaks . The president was working the phones last night along with Dennis Mcdonough hischief of staff. 440 million tax bill worked out between House Republicans and office of harry reid so obviously this pits the president against reid. Heres the white house thinking this gives ten years of benefits to businesses, nothing for middle class americans. In fact a couple provision, of that bill that would have helped especially the working poor, were pulled out at least in part because of what happened with immigration. I think theres going to be a little more room for negotiation. It would be only the third veto that hes made. Chris jansing, thank you. Well check back with chris the next hour for the lighter side of thanksgiving at the white house. One lucky bird set to receive a pardon. After the break, from driving d. C. To driving home for the hot days plenty of americans are grateful for gas prices this year. And later, the protests in hong kong heating up once again. Two student leaders of that movement under arrest as demonstrators clash with police. And a life look at one of the major interchanges in indianapolis on this getaway day. No major weather issues there. Were keeping an eye on the travel trouble in the northeast here on the rundown. Shes still the one for you. Among those arrested were Student Activist joshua huang and lester sium. Gathering to voice their anger over beijings attempts to control which candidates will appear on the ballot for chief executive. On this turkey getaway day, drivers can give thanks for the lowest gas prices in five years. Cnbcs mandy drury join us. This is great news, right, in fact the National Average price has now dropped as you say for 60 straight days. Were paying on average sort of the lowest weve seen since 2009. Let me give you some of the numbers. 2. 81 per gallon is what were sitting at right now. One quarter less than a month ago. And 46 cents than what we were paying on this day one year ago. Great news if youre filling up your car. Its terrible news if youre going to be, you know, getting into all the traffic and im sure lots of people might be canceling their plans at the last minute. I just canceled my rent a car. This is a National Average as well. If youre in hawaii or connecticut, new york state, alaska, in those places you probably pay more than the National Average but we do obviously work in averages just to make it a little easier for us. Cnbcs mandy drury, thank you. Well be keeping an eye on the opening bell by the way. In just seconds. In the next half hour of the rundown, the effects are being felt across the country. Check this out in minneapolis. A car runs into protesters injuring a woman. Shes expected to be okay. Well look at protests across the entire understand. Ited states. First, the airport in washington, d. C. Rain coming down. Flights already being canceled. Well go there live and also check on the roads. Were driving i81 north between winchester virginia and hagers town maryland. It started off as heavy rain earlier this morning but we transitioned over to heavy snow around 7 30, 8 00 this morning. Its already accumulating on the grassy surfaces on the trees themselves it the roads are okay for now. Because temperatures have been mainly above freezing. And because its been so warm recently, its going to take a little while before the roads start to get slippery. vo nourished. Rescued. Protected. Given new hope. Ring ring progresso i cant believe im eating bacon and rich creamy cheese before my sisters wedding well its only 100 calories, so youll be ready for that dress uhhuh. You dont love the dress . I take a look at the opening bell on the new york stock exchange. Celebrating the 88th annual thanksgiving day parade. They hope to hear the sounds of cash registers ringing next and get your lungs ready today, theyll be blowing up those enormous parade balloons. Were keeping a very close eye on this storm system that could throw thanksgiving travel into chaos. Hundreds of flights have been canceled. Nbcs tom costello is at Reagan National airport. Its really a rain event here in the midatlantic today. Its been a very rainy blustery windy day here. Flight operations are pretty close to normal here. In the washington, d. C. Area. Indeed, up the i95 corridor because that snow so far is really tracking to the west of i95 and therefore those airports that hug i95 washington airports bwi, philadelphia, going up to newark and new york. Today so far only dealing with some rain issues and some low ceilings. Take a look at flight aware mis misery map. Its going to be washington today, chicago ohare. I neglected to mention the number of cancellations and delays so far. Were looking at about 340 canceled flights so far systemwide. About 600 delays. I got to tell you, thats not that bad, especially when you consider the entire system today, the rain event, snow affecting the northeast. Another interesting factoid is here in the d. C. Area theyve now transitioned to a satellitebased approach system for air traffic control. Its called next gen, next generation. In this new approach to bringing plains in, the satellitebased navigation as opposed to radar. That means its a much cleaner arrival and departure route. So you probably wont notice it much as a passenger except the ride may be a bit smoother. The point is to get planes in and out quickly and efficiently. Thats great news. Man, is it windy where you are right now. I feel like mary poppins here today. I was thinking that. Tom costello thanks. Now, the president s actions on immigration. One new poll shows American Voters are split on that action. But another shows the policy itself is popular. And this as the president continues to push that policy in chicago yesterday. His second stop since announcing his plan. For the second time, he was interrupted by some of the people not included in his plan. Heres just part of his response to them. The point is that though i understand why you might have yelled at me a month ago, although i disagree with some of your characterizations, it doesnt make much sense to yell at me right now. When were making changes. Our guest is the editor of latino coverage for buzz feed. Good morning. Good morning, how you doing jose . Good, man. Youve done so much reporting from the white house to the activist angle. What is the next step for some of these immigrants not satisfied with the president s policy . I think right now the activists are having their meetings and trying to figure out what is going to be the push leading up to 2016. I think they believe as they showed before they push the president and they said you do have the authority to do this. He would say he didnt. As youve talked about many times. He was focused on a comprehensive Immigration Reform strategy pushed by many of the activists. So now hes shown the activists they can get more people protected. I dont think this issues going away from what im hearing. You just wrote a fascinating article about how we got here. You say the president was forced to do this. What did you mean by that . Since january, the shift in strategy, the dreamers met, you know, in phoenix, the united we dream, one of the largest organizations. They were fed up on what was going on. The republicans had past principles. But then they pulled back. They said thecouldnt en be trusted to enforce the law. What happened they said was the much dangerous issue is the Record Number of deportations. So they switched strategy to stopping deportations to pressuring the president to act, to pressuring democrats to call on him to act and thats whats changed a lot of strategy. You think this is just a thought, because 5 Million People is good. That includes parents of kids born in the United States or legal residents. Do you see the strategy changing by the immigrants groups who may refocus back on the important of Immigration Reform that can only come from the house and the senate . The legislation is whats going to protect the most important of people from deportation. Along with guest worker programs and a multitude of other things that were in the bipartisan bill. A lot of activists believe, you know, when the republicans were looking at the 2014 midterm elections, they thought that was favorable terrain for them on this issue. Now as you look towards 2016 definitely latino issues only growing. An issue theyre hoping republicans will take up and join with democrats on. Lets talk about the new polls. Americans seem to like the policy but now how we got here. Among latinos, we talked about this. We brought it for you on monday. How popular is this situation, do you think, across the country, and in the overall message that the republicans are probably preparing because they really dont have a unified response to this. I think for a while weve seen a few polls that have said americans support a path to citizenship. The latino decisions poll you saw what they told me was record support from the Latino Community 89 of latinos. Including independents. They said that was above doca the deferred action for childhood arrivals for undocumented youth. So its clear that the American Public would prefer that this be done through legislation. I think it looks like people are understanding the president felt he had to act. Thank you very much for being with us. Have a great thanksgiving. I want to talk more about the human angle of the story. This thanksgiving will feel a whole lot different for a lot of people directly impacted by the president s actions. But it will also feel like much of the same for others who remain living in fear of deportation. One of those is a member of the activist group together colorado. He joins us now. Youve been here since you were 16 years old. But the president s actions do not impact you because you dont have kids who are citizens or are residents. What do you want to see happen between then and now . First, i want to say thanks to the president. Because a lot of people there are going to get benefit with it. What about the rest of the people . And i just want to say thank you. And im one of them. The important thing to recognize is that changing immigration laws is an act of congress. But i want to bring you back to your reality. A lot of people dont understand the human toll this does. You serve in many ways as a father figure for your sisters children. And then to my younger brothers, too. Tell us a little bit about that. Theyre going through very difficult times. You have a consistent job. Youre the in many ways the provider for your family. Correct. I am like the father for my younger brothers. Then for my now for my nephews, i help my sister a lot. Because my brotherinlaw, he got deportation five years ago. Im helping my sister to support their kids. This is important. When the provider of the home is deported, it has a direct impact on that family permanently. Theres the issue of, you know this will mean disqualification for millions of people who dont have children. So therefore theres nothing for you. Correct. Is there anything you could say to people so they could understand . I mean, look thats your problem, not mine . Yeah well i just i just wanted to say to say it would be nice if we had Immigration Reform because president obama has been talking about doing that. At least hes doing something. A lot of people there going to get benefit with it. But what about the rest of the people . Thats my question. Its millions of people like in my situation. Yeah ramon, thank you for being with me. Youre welcome, jose have a wonderful thanksgiving. [ speaking Foreign Language ] thank you, for you and yours as well. Thank you. What started in ferguson has spread across the country. Protests, some violent, some peaceful, have taken place. In over 100 u. S. Cities over the last 24 hours. In downtown atlanta, demonstrations were mostly peaceful. Police say a Splinter Group tried to stir up some trouble. In oakland, protesters briefly shut down major freeway, loots businesses and setting fire to trish bans across a main street. Police ultimately forced them to disperse. About 1,000 people marched in portland oregon. Protesters blocked traffic in what was mostly a peaceful demonstration. Although several arrests were reported there. Some of the protests were small being like this group of about 100 people who gathered in miami. There were a few arrests including phillip, one of the dream defenders who was on our show yesterday. In new york city more than 1,000 people blocked roads as they walked through harlem. Crowds also gathered in times square and briefly shut down the lincoln tunnel. In minneapolis, a woman was hit by a car that went into a group of demonstrators outside a police precinct. Take a look at the video. The woman was taken to the hospital. She suffered only minor injured. In washington demonstrators gathered. President obama who was speaking in chicago said the protests were important. Chicago and New York Los Angeles and other cities. Weve seen young people who are organizing and people beginning to have real conversations about how do we change the situation so that theres more trust between Law Enforcement and some of these communities. And those are necessary conversations to have. Were going to go back to ferguson live in the next hour. I want to turn back to the other major story were following this morning. The getaway day forecast which is becoming a nightmare in the northeast. Lets get a check on the roads and rails. In the boston suburb of worcester, massachusetts. Tell us about what exactly travel is going to be like for much of the country. Good morning to you, jose. I have to tell you, we arrived in boston yesterday and it took us three hours to get to where we are in worcester, which is about 40 miles west on the massachusetts turnpike. That gives you a sense of the sheer volume of people trying to get out before this storm hits. The National Weather service has a winter storm warning from 7 00 this morning until 7 00 in the morning tomorrow thanksgiving day. They issued these warnings when they expect 6 inches or more of snow in 6 to 12 hours. In boston, its in the mid40s now. That means theyre only going to get the bulk of the rain. Here in worcester, its above freezing. Weve been out here since about 7 00 in the morning. The conditions are getting worse. This is where theyre going to see the worst of the snow. Accumulation could be up to a foot. Welcome to washington square. Behind me Beautiful Union station. In a Population Center of about 180,000 people. 30,000 students also live here. A lot of students heading home to see mom and dad will probably take the amtrak or the Commuter Rail out of union station. A lot of bus lines that take you to major hubs like boston and hartford and western connecticut. Here 290, this connector takes you to the massachusetts turnpike which runs east and west across massachusetts. It also takes you to 84. So a lot of congestion is expected. The National Weather service expecting the heaviest the snow to hit between 1 00 this afternoon and 8 00 at night. If you can help it try to leave now and definitely be careful because conditions are going to get worse as the day progresses. Jose, back to you. Thank you so much. Im just wondering how do people burrtcher your first name . Im dominican so ive heard it all. In spanish, you actually pronounced it right so thank you. Thank you. Android, thats the best. Thanks so much. Yeah its really bad. Appreciate it. Well more fallout from shocking allegations of Sexual Assault at the university of virginia. The school is saying its ready to adopt zero tolerance policies. New developments on that straight ahead. I would like to say to jackie and her parents that im sorry. Weeks after Charlottesville Police investigated the disappearance and murder of freshman graham. The university asked chief tim to investigate jackies case. There were bystanders. There were people in that room. Who saw and heard what has been called shocking and horrifying and i hope the bystanders have the moral courage, the moral courage to come forward and help us with that investigation. Even as protesters silently condemned the schools policies one side of uvas founder reading Sexual Assault a jeffrey sewn began tradition. The board vowed to come up with new solutions. Alright, so this tylenol arthritis lasts 8 hours, but aleve can last 12 hours. And aleve is proven to work better on pain than tylenol arthritis. So why am i still thinking about this . How are you . Aleve, proven better on pain. And developing this hour in the rundown. A major noreaster that could cause major disruptions to the thanksgiving get away. Here is a live look at Detroit Metro airport and interstate 64 in louisville, kentucky. This is a look at interstate 81 in Northern Virginia where its been snowing for a few hours making for some pretty tricky travel. Hundreds of flights in and out of the northeast have already been cancelled. Nbc news meteorologist bill karins is tracking the noreaster. Bill, good morning. Good morning. This storm really starting to crank up now. The intensity will get worse. And the effects on travel the roads, and peoples daily lives are increaseing by the hour. The storm is starting to intensify off the North Carolina coast. Its going to move up this morning. After midnight in the gulf of maine. Its everywhere here from the mountains of virginia all the way through Northern New England that is going to see the worth effects of the storm. Its already developed. It developed quickly, top. The airport, as expected with high volume today. We have a storm that bring in gusty winds, low clouds and pouring rain. Three hour delays at la Guardia Newark newark, philadelphia at hour and a half. D. C. And baltimore are doing okay. Were okay so far at logan. I would call ahead and make sure. Theres going to be a lot of problems. Not so much with the flights there this morning. But the flights trying to land. Those are the ones getting backlogged and piled up. Limited visibility is causing problems and limited runways. Temperatures have fallen enough we have snowcovered roads from northern jersey. I saw pictures by State College by penn state and along the pennsylvania turnpike. Those roads are now covered. Its snowing hard too. Thats the trouble spot for driving along with 81. Now the snow is really breaking out in southern new york. Thats why i 87 is a horrible drive from albany to new york. Along interstate 80 into the Higher Elevations is going to be quickly snow covered. And the snow is going rain to snow. Avoid the snow pike unless you have snow tires and chainchain. Its the slushy slippery snow. We could pick up a foot of snow there. Its going to happen quickly. The snowfall rates will be intense. I dont think the big cities on i95 will get a lot. You have to drive from boston down i95 south wards all the way even to florida it will be a rainy drive but it wont be a problem with ice or snow. Were getting to the point where a lot of people will make that decision stay home or go take a risk on the roads. You know, thats time. You should have left earlier is the only thing you can say. Right. Thank you so much bill karns. Well have more on the air travel situation along with road travel with live reports from reagan and la guardia airports among other places. Thats coming up. Back to ferguson where Michael Browns father said he today he appreciates the action of Peaceful Protesters and said quote, we love them for that. But its not just about ferguson anymore. Protests around the country overnight lead to dozens of arrest from boston to new york to california and cleveland. Even in miami. By one count there were demonstrations in more than 170 american cities. The good news at least in ferguson, the second night of protest was much calmer than the first. Msnbc Amanda Sakuma was there. She joins me this morning. Good morning. Reporter good morning, jose. Amanda, do you think things have turned the corner or do you think protests could continue to get out of hand . You know, theres hope in the air that weve seen the final bits of destruction here. But i have to say that many of the stall warts of the movement ive spoke ton cautioned others to stay at home until the dust settles. The crowds were smaller last night. As is the theme here. We saw a tension between factions of the protest groups. We have the people there who want to demonstrate peacefully. But we have people that are waiting for some type of confrontation with police to hit off. If it doesnt happen theyre willing to egg it on. We saw people break off from the main crowd and the Ferguson Police department to set a small fire in front of a Police Cruiser near the city hall. Police quickly swooped in and deployed tear gas on the crowd. As promised there was a heightened Police Presence in what we saw on monday night. But even after those rowdy crowds and scuffles. We saw protesters try to unite. We saw them to organize chance. They were linking their arms together and substantial doubttanding in a Straight Line and keep the movement and message going. Its a tension in the back and forth we keep seeing. Its likely well continue to see this. Remember a lot of these activists are proud in the fact theyre not trained organizers. Theyre not used to this. They simply showed up on the day of Michael Browns death. It was a melting pot of different agendas from civil liberties, Civil Justice and civil rights. Its going to have this type of tension but were hopeful it will remain peaceful into the night. Its yet to be seen. But we know that Police Presence will be heightened as we move into the holidays. Amanda sakuma thank you so much. Good to see you. For the first time were hearing from Darren Wilson the man at the center. He said he didnt do anything wrong in the incident that led to the death of Michael Brown. He told abc that he is sorry. Do you feel any remorse . Ever feels remorse when a life is lost. Like i told you before i never wanted to take anybodys life. You know, thats not the good part of the job. Thats the bad part of the job. So, yes, there is remorse. I guess the only final question i have is what is the most important thing that people need to believe about Darren Wilson . I just did my job. I did what i was paid to do and it was my job. I followed my training. The training took over. The training led me to what happened. I maintain the integrity of this investigation. And thats it. Joining me now john gaskt, a ferguson native. Thank you for being with me. Now that the evidence is out from the grand jury, something that is unusual to see this kind of amounts of evidence from a grand jury and weve heard from offer willson. Tuesday it change your view of what may have happened at all . No it doesnt change my view at all. However, it does put people on notice about these stereo types. Law enforcement oftentimes has young black man within our neighborhoods here in america. If you look very closely at the documents from the investigation where he talks about he felt like a 5yearold holding on to hulk hogan or Michael Brown looked like a demon. When you listen to those types of words its very concerning. It appears it almost gives off the message that officer Darren Wilson wasnt necessarily in fear of his life but more so intimidated by Michael Brown. You know a good point was brought up this morning. I think officer Darren Wilson did what he wanted to do not what he had to. Thats what his description says here. You see her interviews. Coming out to do interviews on National Networks just days after this type of investigation. All though hes still under investigation for federal charges. I think its preemptive and arrogant. From the testimony you spoke about in the grand jury testimony, in the four hours he was in the grand jury he over and over again essentially said he feared for his life. And then in this abc interview, one of the points he wanted to make over and over again is the fact shehe would have acted this way under the same circumstance regardless of who the person was. What the color of his skin could be well jose here is the thing. We have to consider Darren Wilson had weeks to speak with his attorney to prepare and equip himself to be able to speak before that grand jury which, as you know is not a very hostile environment. He had weeks to get his testimony together and say the key words which he knew he had to say to know he was not indicted. He said all the right things. Thats concerning for people on the other side of justice. Because why should he have an opportunity to go before the grand jury to tell his story and no other sides of the story get an opportunity to be shared. Its biassed. Its simply not fair. Thats why you see the unrest here within the community and the outrage from community leaders. I want to talk about that john. It is something were able to see and sense even. It were not there. We see the anger and the frustration that many people feel. How do we as a country and how do you as a Community Help turn that frarndom arounder and frustration to something positive that can cause positive changes in your community. We have to continue to invest and to rally people within this community. To encourage them to rebuild. This community may be strained. It may have, you know faced some challenges but its certainly not broken. As i talk with business leaders, yes theyre disappointed their businesses have burned and destroyed. But they believe in this community. They believe in many of the young people. They see out here protesting who they fed and serviced for years. For example, the local naacp, today, is giving away over 200 turkeys to employees that lost their jobs just the other night when their place of employment was burned completely to the ground during one of the busiest shopping seasons this year. Thats how we rebuild the community. Working with the people on the ground let them know were here to support you. What can we do to address the systemic changes and challenges that you see on a daytoday basis. Any idea how many people lost their jobs due to businesses torched . From the information weve gotten from local organizations like the chamber of commerce and other groups well over 80 or 90 people. At least what weve been communicated earlier today. And those people have families. You know thanksgiving is tomorrow. If youre a basher or hairdresser, thats your primary time to do business. Going through christmas you dont have a place of employment. Those people dont typically have any kind of pension fund or anything they can fall back on. John gaskin i appreciate you being with us. Thank you for having me again. And just in a couple of minutes were going to go back to ferguson to speak to a reverend whose church was burned this week. He has his doubts who may have been behind the crime. More on the thanksgiving travel disruptions. This is a live look at Detroit Metro which could be affected by the storm sweeping through the midwest and northeast. It looks pretty good. But it could get worse. A closer look at ferguson and protests springing up across the nation. And troubling overseas stories. The fight to find 43 missing College Students has taken to the streets of mexico. In hong kong more scuffles between protesters and government for election. Major developments on those stories and so much more when the rundown comes right back. Why do i cook . Because i make the best chicken noodle soup. Because i make the best chicken noodle soup. Because i make the best chicken noodle soup. For every way you make chicken noodle soup, make it delicious with swanson®. I have a cold with terrible chest congestion. Better take something. Theraflu severe cold doesnt treat chest congestion. Really . New alkaseltzer plus day powder rushes relief to your worst cold symptoms to another disturbing discovery in mexico. The family and friends of 43 missing students uncovered four new mass graves. At the same time hundreds march in mexico city tuesday voicing their support for the group of protesters arrested last week. Those protesters are demanding answers from the Mexican Federal government about the 43 students that disappeared in september. Well go live with julioewelulio in los angeles. Good morning. Does it seem to me that its just horrific it seems as though in mexico when youre going around the area you dig dirt you find a mass grave. Theres a new discovery, new mass graves. No connection apparently to the students. Yeah. Apparently theres no connection. Its been civilians volunteers ngo that have found the recent mass graves. Looking for the 43 students. Around 20 mass graves have been found. It reveals two things. One, families and civilians dont trust the government. The government said the students were burned and their ashes were thrown into a river. People are still looking for answers. They cant believe it. On the other hand it shows that the situation in gurerer row is much worse than expected. The 43 students are not the only victims. Much more bodies have been found in the mass graves. And its important, these latest four mass graves were not found by government officials or police. They were found by regular folks. The parents of the students. This is not done by the police. Yeah, it proves that the situation that the outreach and the angle that many people feel their frustration felt by many in gurrerer row they cannot believe what the government has said. Thats why mass protests are taking place like mexico city and around the country. They believe what the government has done and how the government has reacted to the crisis has not been enough. They just cannot believe what theyre saying. What authorities are saying. On the day of the mexican revolution, there were massive protests in the capitol. There were some protests in mexico city yesterday. And how is the administration of current president handling the growing frustration that seems to be showing up. Some people were detained last weeks protests. And people now are protesting because those were detained. And they believe that many of these manifestations have been started in an authoritarian away. The president suggested there theyre trying to destabilize the country. So you can see that his government is not really getting how big this crisis is. And people arent just happy. The social media people in the social media are reacting. Demand that the situation gets better in mexico. Thank you, my friend for being with me. Its a pleasure to see you. Well continue to update you on the latest developments on this unfolding story. I want to turn overseas now to a from test of a different kind in hong kong. More than 100 people have been arrested including seven Police Officers over the last 36 hours. You can see police here scuffling with one young activist in the video from earlier today. Nearly two dozen people injured and cops today clearing what has been the staging area for demonstrators. I should say demonstrateors. Protesters are angry at leaders in beijing limiting who can be the executive. Benjamin hoss on the phone. One of the arrested is joshua wang the leader of the protest movement. We know hes been arrested for less than 24 hours. And this is the first time hes been arrested. I think he was arrested when he was 17 also just two months ago at the beginning of protests. And what is the chinese regime saying about what is going on in hong kong . You know, the chinese have they support the local hong kong authorities and havent changed their tone whatsoever since then. Some of the hong kong students tried to fly to beijing. They werent allowed to get on the plane because they were told their travel documents were cancelled. China wants the problem to go away. They dont have a desire to fix anything. Yeah. I imagine that how making that problem go away is manifested is concerning to many people. What are the demonstrators end game here . You know, its what weve seen over the past 24 hours with the arrests you spoke about were the protest site that has no certain leadership. The protesters are steadfast in their demands. Thank you for joining me from hong kong this morning, benjamin hass. Were going to zoom through the other stories of the day. I want to show you the pictures coming in from san diego. A protest on a highway that has halted traffic for miles. Protester wearing black and holding signs. Watch that as it develops. Well head back to ferguson missouri. First, Michael Browns mother responded for the first time to video of her current husband in the moments after the grand jury decision. Here she is on the today show. And there was a video that circulated about monday night. I want to show you. And the video we see your husband what appears stirring up the crowd. Take a look and i want to ask you about it on the other side. I know, you were there in the crowd and it was just after the news came out. What do you have to say about that. He was just emotional. I dont feel he stirred the crowd. The crowd was already stirred. Its been stirring since august 9th. Alright, so this tylenol arthritis lasts 8 hours, but aleve can last 12 hours. We ask you to enjoy thanksgiving with your family. Joining me now Senior Sports reporter for buzz feed. Thank you so much for being with me. Ryan this was much less violence last night in ferguson compared to the night before. What is going on there . It was a little bit calmer. The violence before was wide spread. Essentially because the street was shut down and cretetreated as a crime scene. In front of the Police Department there was violence and theres a big Police Presence and you had one cop car that was in front of city hall that was i think, turned over or maybe almost tushrned over for a moment before police moved in and dispersed tear gas. What are the expectations there for tonight . Well, its probably going to be a little bit calmer than it was the night before. I think they asked more National Guards men to come into town. Theres about 2,000 at this point. It looks like they be able to get a handle on it. Its colder today than yesterday. Theres a little bit of hope that it might not be as bad as its been. You catch incredible immans of the night of the grand jurys decision. You posted video of the damage including Corner Store Coffee house and what sense as the Community Picks up the pieces wants to not see any more image images. The entire stretch was devastated. Yesterday was trying to write a piece, you know, to talk to the business owners. But its shut down. Its tough to even get in contact with these people. And buildings were completely destroyed. I mean, it was really something incredible to see and how wide spread it was along this stretch of the road. I want to ask you about an article you wrote, quote, ferguson could be mike brown take a furious chaos they have caused. Theres a lot of people off the grid in terms of the organization and organized protest groups. People that didnt show up for the nonviolent training sessions, people that arent part of news letters, people that arent part of any former group. And there are people that have been they feel theyve been marginalized. Victims of racial profiling. Some claim theyve been victims of police brutality. They live in a city where the quarter of the people are in poverty and half of the young black men are unemployed. Its a chance to show people theyre here. They have issues and they havent been addressed and they kind of feel peaceful protest hasnt really resonated with Public Officials and Police Officers. This is one way of expressing their dissatisfaction with the system. Joel anderson and ryan raleigh, thank you for being with me. Were getting new reaction from Michael Browns father to the protests in ferguson and across the country following the grand jurys decision. Michael brown senior appeared on the today show this morning along with Michael Browns mother. It happened not just in ferguson, but around the country last night. We saw people coming out and marching remembering your son. What does mean to you . For those protesting in a positive way, some people i wont say im mad at the people doing what theyre doing but thats their agenda. Its not what i asked for. That doesnt have nothing to do with us. Every one of the positive protesters, we appreciate them. Joining me now is reverend karl lee. The church Michael Brown church attends attends, hes the pastor there. Your church was set on fire monday night. We have pictures you took. The atf and the st. Louis area officials are investigating. They have not said if the burning of your church is related to the protests or your activities. But what theyre saying theyre investigating. What do they tell you . Its the same thing they told me. Theyre investigating. They asked me i think it was Fire Department that asked me did i have any enemies or anything. I told them, you know ive been threatened several times throughout my life. The church has been threatened. They said okay. And the atf came by yesterday. They did the thorough investigation. So from what i know the investigation is still ongoing. Your life has been threatened a number of times. Tell us how. We have had people post letters on the door. We had two people stop by. We had gentlemen stop by and threaten two different people me being one. What they were going do was cause physical harm to me. One letter in particular that i received a guy said im aassuming a guy, the letter stays they were going to take me and all the hate prepreachers erspreachers and take me and set the church on fire. And, you know its interesting because to be called a hate preacher is just youve been one of the voices that have been calling for calm and for peaceful protests. Yeah, we have. Thats been our mind set. We have called for the immediate arrest of officer Darren Wilson. I noticed right after i did a press conference calling for the arrest of Darren Wilson is when we started receiving the threats. Michael brown senior was baptized at your church over the past weekend. How is he and the brown family doing . Theyre doing pretty good. You know, i was with them when the decision was reached. We got a call five minutes beforehand. Obviously, very emotional. And, you know, he didnt know anything about the church. I told him later on in the afternoon and he was just devastated by it. I told him, hey, man. Its okay. Were fine. Were even more committed to you and the family. Were not going anywhere. Thats what family does. We stay there with each other. Andpastor, im thinking when a traumatic situation occurs with a family you work with and know so well, its difficult to put that feeling past, you know, you say, well you know, well get through this. Its difficult for someone who loses a child to get past that at any time. How do we as a community and ferguson as a Community Deal with that hurt . But put that past and try to grow and learn from it well you know, the bible teaches us that love covers all things. With that being said, i think we need to get out of the place of hatred and spread more love. One of the characteristics of love is listening. So i think we need to listen to each other. I think we need to have effective dialogue. We can agree to disagree any day of the week. But if were not working toward active change, those are i think this we should be looking at. We should be looking at loving each other. Listening to each other, and trying to change areas we need to change. Yeah. Its interesting to see how many people cant deal with agreeing to disagree and do so in a peaceful and thought provoking manner. Its very difficult for a lot of people. Absolutely. It is. Ill tell you this. Just before i came on my children were arguing about something that made absolutely no sense and i said well, listen, this is your point of view. This is her point of view. Agree to disagree. They still didnt want to hear it. Later on i talked to them a little bit more. They agreed to disagree. If my children can do it we as adults we can put aside our differences and agree to disagree on certain things. Reverend thank you for being with me. I appreciate your time. Thank you. Now back to the white house and two lucky birds will be at the center of d. C. Conversation and not the dinner table today. One will serve as a National Thanksgiving turkey. The other will be an alternate. Kind of like if the main turkey has a problem that one fills the slot. Well, both, however, will be avoiding the oven. Theyre both from ohio. They weigh about 50 pounds. You can see the farms owner driving them to d. C. Right now theyre resting comfortably at the hour at the willard hotel. The tradition dates back well decades. Yeah. If not longer. Its said that maybe lincolns son tad didnt want to have thanksgiving and convinced his dad to let the turkey live. Theyll be leaving the 350 a night room to come here to the white house where they will continue the tradition of being pardoned. It is something that is always one of the most fun things that happens every year. You never know how the turkeys are going to react. Then theyll live out the rest of their days in mount vernon. Which is George Washingtons estate in virginia. He live there had for almost 40 years. Its significant because it was washington in 1789 who signed a president ial proclamation declaring there should be a national day of thanks. And so theyre going to be there for the rest of their lives. Are all the turkeys there pardoned . They go there. There must be a pretty sizable turkey population. You asked a question which i have no good answer. I cant even tell you a quick google will tell me the average lifespan of a turkey. I know 36 million will not end. Theyll end up on my thajs giving table and yours. If you feel compelled, somehow, to become a part of the turkey tradition. I know, you do jose. I do i know. As you can see normal flat operations. Slight delays. Its rain and wind. And the rain is turning into sleet. You heard about the talk happening in the new york city area. Its because of low ceilings. Into philadelphia, jfk, la guardia, and newark. The low ceilings are causing delays into the airports. But were not talking about delays because of snow or ice, at least not yet. For the most part, when we talk to the airlines theyre expecting this to be not have a dramatic impact because of snow and ice. Really were talking about a rain delay and low ceiling delay. Thats likely to be the situation through the day. Maybe toward the rush hour and the evening. We might get some snow and sleet. Well see how to plays out. Back to you.
