Historic moment is defined by what we dont know. Trump is said to be experiencing mild symptoms. And has not transferred power to Vice President mike pence. Who is thus far tested negative. But reverberations are being felt videos the white house. The busy week highlights not only the risks of the various but why we need a full accounting of his activities. We are now left as the media to Contract Trace on our own. Even as it was announced a short time ago, three journalists have tested positive for the virus. In the days leading up to his diagnosis, the president and his staff, often without masks have been crisscrossing the country. Last friday, he was in new port virginia for a Campaign Rally and on saturday, he held two private events and a rose garden ceremony welcoming his Supreme Court pick. Amy coney barrett. That event is already drawing scrutiny. Senator mike lee and a representative of notre dame have tested positive. He a rally in pennsylvania and he had private meetings and a News Conference in the white house. He held two Public Events at the white house, a morning photo op and a rose garden meeting. He traveled on cleveland on tuesday, with at least 20 people including chris christie, Rudy Giuliani, and alice johnson, who may remember as his cosigner on criminal justice reform. She was released from prison through a program he signed. Later that night, he shared the debate stage in cleveland with joe biden. The president s family did not wear masks during the indoor debate despite being asked to. The Biden Campaign learned of the diagnosis the same we all the did. Through news reports. There was no contact from the white house or the Trump Campaign to alert the Biden Campaign to potential exposure. Biden and his wife however, have tested negative today. In a tweet biden said his thoughts were with the trumps adding we will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family. Biden has called it a reminder to wear a mask, to social distance and to wash your hands. But back to donald trump for a moment. Whos schedule continued you know abated after tuesdays debate. He was in minnesota for a rally. And yesterday, hours before it was reported that one of his closest advisers had been infected, trump traveled to new jersey, for a fundraiser at his golf club in bedminster, the chief of staff, mark meadow said that the white house knew of hope hicks positive test prior to the trip. We dont know the source of the outbreak. Trump now joins Boris Johnson and the brazilian president. Over 7 million americans woe know have had the coronavirus. Over 209,000 of the people have died. For more, im joined by dr. Gupta, jonathan, lamier, for the Associated Press and carol lee, nbc news correspondent. Carol, i will start with you. Donald trump made remarks upon arriving at walter reed, i had will play them for you. I want to thank everybody for the tremendous support. Im going to walter reed hospital, i think im doing very, very well. We are going to make sure things work out. The first lady is doing well. Thank you very much, i appreciate it, i will never forget it. Thank you. Do we, you know, the challenge that we have here is we are getting information from the white house as to Donald Trumps condition, this was obviously a very important thing for the president to do. You know, from the point of view of the world watching the president and them needing to show him looking robust, looking healthy. Being able to speak for himself. That was important for the presidency. How clear is the information that we are getting about his condition. About the first ladys condition. And about the apparently members of the press corp who have also, who cover the white house who also tested positive for the coronavirus. Well, joy, i guess i would start by saying theres a lot we dont know and the way that we have seen the past 24 hours unfold its every few hours we learn something new about the president s health. You know, when had they first said publically that he tested positive for coronavirus early this morning, there was not a lot of information there. And then we learned later through our own reporting that the president had a low grade fever and that he his voice was raspy and you can hear there from the video, the president sounds a little conjested, around in the 4 00 p. M. Hour, the president s doctor put out another statement saying he had received this treatment, had this regeneron antibody cocktail infusion that theyve given him and also said that the president was showing symptoms but he was feeling okay. However, they made the decision to take the president and transfer him over to walter reed because this is something that clearly requires more attention than the white house medical unit, which is a significant medical unit. But it obviously, this, and the president and the condition he is in, is something that is not, needed more attention, so they decided to move him over there. And that news broke around 5 15 and an hour later we saw the president exit the residence of the white house, wearing a mask. And notably the people around him and including the chief of staff, they were wearing medical grade masks, not just masks. N95 masks it looked like. Which is a big change for people around the president. So, we dont we dont know more than we know if that makes sense. Yeah. And thats really been the way that this white house has handled the president s health generally and frankly many issues. But this is clearly something that is very serious and the president going to walter reed, you know, he will spend a few days there. This is not something that he is in interest out of. And what the white house has tried to do is present this as precautionary and the president is going to be there working in the the offices there in the president ial suite because theres concern of this image that the president is somehow really unhealthy. Yeah. And we know that power was not transferred to the Vice President. We do. So i think they are trying to send a message to the president that he is healthy. And however, going walter reed sends its own message. The question i had will ask you, dr. Gupta, that method of treatment, does that track for you how a patient of the president s age and issue of obesity, does it sound like normal standard treatment . And seeing him, that was a small piece of video, all. You are not treating him and not diagnosis him. But what do you make of sort of what we can see about the status of his health . Good evening, joy. Let me start with that latter question. Its good to see him and frankly good to see that it seems like he does look robust, and speak in full sentences. So, as a pulmonologist, if somebody comes down with covid19, i want to see are they gasping for breath just to get a sentence is out. Are can they speak in normal terms are they, do they look like they are struggling to breathe. Using their accessory muscles, is their chest moving up and down like that. He looked overall okay. Thats a good thing. I will say, what is unusual and this is im part of the pulmonary, Critical Care community nationwide, we have all exhibited a lot of humility learning from each other. Im in seattle, in the initial epi center. We have been trading notes with colleagues in new york. We are learning about the virus. In no case have i heard of a patient, especially of the president s, the importance of the president getting a experimental infusion of an antibody cocktail, even if the initial results are promising and it makes no sense that that would be the approach here. One, you have it doesnt make clinical sense. Why are they doing that . Is there something concerning they are seeing in his lab work or his vital signs. Whatever his pulse oxcimeter is showing. It would be good for shthem to share it. And it gives the impression, why is the president getting an early stage theraputic and people across the country are probably wondering why not me . Theres a lot of people who are asymptomatic or symptomatic but not hospitalized with covid19. Why is he getting preferential access if this is that affect i ha have that affective of a drug. So this smells a bit dangerous. Theres a lot of confusion. Theres not any clarity on why they are doing what they are doing. So, i would encourage the white house medical unit and the physicians at walter reed to be transparent with the American Public so the larger medical community can interpret what is happening. Yeah, the transparency has been the challenge over the last several years. Jonathan, i want to bring you in and play for you what Chris Wallace had to say. The debate is just one of a sort of Inflection Point of places that the president and his aids have been that could have been, that we dont know what the sources of, you know, his infection of the first ladies, or his top aid or one of his top aids, but its one of the places that they, that they were. That is in fact the reason that joe biden had to get, Vice President joe biden and his wife had to be tested for coronavirus. Lets hear about how careful they were going in to t debate as far as the Trump Campaign. They were not tested by the clinic based on this statement. To me, that sounds like an honor system. Well, they couldnt be tested by the clinic. But you were tested. I was tested. I understand. I understand, bill, but the difference was that i arrived on sunday, i think you arrived on monday. They didnt arrive until tuesday afternoon. So, for them to get tested, there had would not have been enough time to have the test and the debate at 9 00 that night. They didnt show up until 3, 4, 5 00 in the afternoon. So, yeah, there was an honor system when it came to the people that came in to the hall from the two campaigns. So, jonathan, i wonderer what the white house is saying, i will ask you first and then carol lee, about, you know, whether or not members of the white house were aware of hope hicks diagnosis. And were aware of the potential that the president and first lady had been exposed because i think theres a very relevant question of when and where. And this is just one of the events. It seeps concerning that they would not have been tested going in to that event. I think its reflective, joy. As to how the white house has approached the coronavirus from the beginning. At times they have cut corners. It has down played risk. It has not always followed the letter of the law in terms of the federal guidelines. They have ignored time and again, cdc recommendations about social distancing and masks for two ca two examples. We know hope hicks was traveling with him to the debate on tuesday and for all of his stops on wednesday. Which was a trip to minnesota including a rally do we know . We do not know when and where hope hicks was infected and to be fair, we dont know if hope hicks infected president trump, it could have been the other way around. It could have been somebody they crossed paths. Yeah, it could be four, or five days previously, it could be over the weekend or even at the end of last week. Wednesday evening, staffers isolated on the plane on the way back. And the perhaps most damning moment is that he was told on, of her test on thursday and still went to new jersey fundraiser even though he was told he was exposed to somebody who was a confirmed positive case. Carol back to you as well. Some of the people we know have traveled with the president , there was the debate pretty where are chris christie, Rudy Giuliani and kelly anne conway, and jason miller were attending. You had mike lee pointing out that he took a negative test before he attended the white house ceremony for Amy Coney Barretts nomination. On tuesday, the list is much longer about the people who traveled with donald trump the first lady, congressman jim jordan, robert obrien, you can go down the list. Chris christie again and Rudy Giuliani. You can go down the list of family members and including civilians as well. Does the white house internally . Is there Contract Tracing going and do you get the sense that the white house knows more than what they may be telling us about where and how the first couple, the first lady and the president , contracted the coronavirus . Well, the white house has said Officials Say that they are doing Contract Tracing, that they are trying to Contact People who may have come in to contact with the president or the first lady. The Trump Campaign said that they were telling people, Campaign Officials to isolate if they were in contact with the president or the first lady. But, we dont really know a lot, and you know, we spoke with officials who said that earlier today, there was a lot of confusion in the white house, there was some panic about what was going on, and who may have been exposed. There were not a lot of answers to questions internally according to folks that we spoke with. And so, theres, its not clear exactly how the white house is conducting its Contact Tracing and who they are contacting and in what form. Now, and dr. Gupta, we saw that visual of the president s family and their guests at the debate, not a lot of masks being worn. How risky are these events . This was an indoor event. Obviously it was the did debate. You know, as compared to the other events that donald trump has done outdoors. I just wonder, you know, what is the risk factor here for what was done and how concerning is it that its not clear whether or not they were aware that the president and first lady had been exposed to the coronavirus before they did that . Oh, its deeply concerning, joy. First of all, it looks like the rapid tests that the white house is relying on is something called the apidi. D. Test now, that test has fallen in to disfavor in many Clinical Communications because of the false negative rate is as hyatt third . Out of ten people getting the test, three get a negative test. Thats a terrible rate. They need to scrap that tft. That could be causing confusion. And of course, the huberous here, is the writing on the wall, with respect to thumbing their nose at science is coming back to haunt them. In door events with no masking, it was galling and audacious that our colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic asked them to wear masks. And they said no. This is going to come back to haunt them. Its already doing that now. And im hoping that they use this opportunity to, to turn course here and use the opportunity to now renew a better science based message for the American People. In fact, on the judiciary committee, where you sit, jim jordan, tom mcclintok, amy biggs, all refuse to wear their mask. I do not participate with inhearing meetings because they refuse to do so. We are had in the midst of a completely avoidable National Security crisis is. We wish the president well, but this was an avoidable cries sis. If the president has more access to testing and precautions than anyone in the world can contract this, thats a pretty clear sign that we are not doing enough nationwide, i dont want to just focus on congress. I want to focus on every ever person in america because if they dont have access to testing every day and they dont have the precautions that the president has, they are more exposed than the president and this crisis has not been controlled. I am also thinking, you know, to, as you said, there are the precautions that congress can take and jim jordan, you mentioned was traveling with the president , he is one of those that was open about not taking those kinds of precautions and theres people in the white house that have nothing to do with politics, theres white house Staff Members there. Some of them who have been working there for decades or who are older. Many of them, people of color, who are vulnerable. I wonder if congress has a role to play in terms of, you know, how can it be ensured that they are protected. Theres staff there, theres grounds keepers and other people around the president every day. Its so selfish, joy, to expose people like that. And who i think given the right information and the right resources, want to do the right thing to protect themselves and protect others. I really believe, you know, we are a country that follows our leaders and if the leader of the country is not wearing their mask. And if the leader of the country is mocking people who wear masks. Its going to have a trickle down affect where not everyone is going to wear a mask. I really hope that the best Case Scenario here is the president comes out of this healthy, and fully recovered, but the whole country comes out of this recognizing that we are in a serious crisis, and you know, not to put in play what we were trying to do this week in washington, but i think its important and it should not be missed, we are trying to pass an updated heroes act, where we are expanding tracing and treatment and making sure that front line workers get hazard pay. I hope this motivates my colleagues on the other side to recognize that we are not chose to out of this, now is the time to act more. Well, lets talk about the National Security implications. You did bring it up and we know that, you know, in Great Britain when the Prime Minister there came done with the coronavirus, he did change his outlook and cause him to rethink the National Health service and things that can happen. That is especially problematic when we are talking about the president s health. Can you walk us through. This has happened before, that the president s dont necessarily tell the truth about their health. How different is it that its this president . You are exactly right . Its far more the rule than the exception that president s mislead us about the details of their health. Woodrow wilson and his stroke in his late two terms that had a clear affect on the political life of the country and the internationaler order because of the failure of the league of nations. President roosevelt, nhis polio was the least of it. He kept the pact that he congestive heart failure, and was asking the country to vote for him in 1944 without being in any way straight forward about the way was feeling and his prospects for longevity. President kennedy, you mentioned never disclosed addisons disease. President reagan, there was a doctored photograph after the shooting. President bush, sr. , had graves disease in his term. Excuse me had. And was not clear about that. Part of the problem is president s, the currency of the presidency in many ways is to project strength no matter what. And so, thats the cultural surround. Then, as you suggest, you add in the cultural surround of the trump white house. Which is, that the leader is right no matter what. And so, you have this the dangerous tendency in real time with a historical and retrospective tradition that i think will leave us in some mystification and uncertainty of the truth of what is unfolding as we speak. The good news is if the white house decided to be candid, to be straight forward and overbrief, theres a great political tradition of getting through moments of crisis by over sharing information. That seems unlikely. And of course the implications of this as if we are talking about a horse race. The president of the United States, as they used to say in the 60s, the person is the political. Because its the Overall Health not only of the president but of the body polotic. It does have so many parallels making it a search to find normalcy. Woodrow, in the sense that not only the views, there was as you said, a flu diagnosis. He did get the flu, the government went to Great Lengths to keep can it secret. But he also was untruthful about the flu for reasons of not wanting to disrupt the march in to word war i, so he was both, right . So we had that kind of situation before. We have. You know, wilson resegregated the federal government. He was president when the second klu cklux caklan was formed. There was a period of enormous antiimmigrant feeling. It was an era where americanism, the phrase was 100 americanism, we wanted to be 100 american. And so, it was an era of nativism. It was an era of racism and it was presided over by a president because he was consumed by his own sense of his own virtue that he did mislead us fundamentally. Particularly in the critical years late in his term when he was trying to rebuild the world after the cataclysm of the first world war. You know, and that said, there doesnt seem to be any sort of historic president for this currentpresident. In part because this is all happening. This maelstrom of events that includes the president , becoming infected with the virus, after he admitted that he knew how lethal and dangerouses the, now you add in an election that is under way. What is your perspective that you can offer on all of that mixed together . All of that mixed together is, theres a certain historical symmetry, that is unfolding right now in washington and bethesda. Donald trump, and we all wish him well, donald trump is an anomaly in some ways and as you eluded to, he is a fuller manifestation of the forces in american life, when we have had those forces ebb, we have been in better shape than when we float. Native. Extremism, isolationism. Theres something about the fact that now, he suffers from the virus that has afflicted the United States so dramatically, has affected the world so dramatically. And so, in a way, we are seeing a literal and a metaphorical coming together of all the forces that have shaped us off and on throughout our history, but with particular ferocity and particular clarity in the past five years and fact it is unfolding with 32, 31, 32 days before america will decide the whether they want to continue to be the america of donald trump or whether they would like to be the america that joe biden represents, offers a, yet another dimensionto the starkness of the choice that sits before us. Good call in your view on the biden, on the Biden Campaigns part . Its very joe biden to take the negative ads down, its the most joe biden thing ever. Oh, yeah, its the right thing to do. People are scared, people are worried about the future of the country and biden is campaigning on being a real president. And he has to act hike a real president at all times and i think he is doing exactly the right thing and i think speech was very good today, with the mask on, to prove the point without having to say it. And going to the other side, you are part of the Lincoln Project that is running ferocious ads against donald trump, well deserved critiques of his failings, including on coronavirus. Where stands the effort to educate the country about the ways in which donald trump has failed when he is in this kind of a position . Well, its you want to be respectful, and you want to be mindful that the president of the United States, rarldleegardf what you may think of him is in a very serious situation and the country should be concerned about that. But, we are 30 days away from a national election. That will happen. And you still need to prosecute the case. You still need to make the case to the American People about why the direction of the country matters. And why whos leading that direction to chairman deans point, also matterers. And joe biden today gave a great illustration of that. Not only did he follow the appropriate cdc protocols. But his words, i think spoke to the nation in a way, and his actions in addition to the masks and all that, taking down his ads, and spoke to the nation in a way to remind them of what a president does in a crisis. Because, remember, a year ago, i think to the day, the president gave a speech mocking Hillary Clinton when she suffered from pneumonia. New york times today had a piece talking that the republicans have to acknowledge that the race has always been about the virus. And now theres no way for the Trump Campaign to evade the idea of the pandemic. Its all about the pandemic now. Meanwhile trump cant do his performative thing, talk about law and order, he now has to take care of his health. It taken that away from his messages while the virus takes center stage. It always been about the virus because people are really scared about the virus and the virus cuts an incredibly clear contrast between joe biden and donald trump, but this race has always been about donald trump, which frankly is why hes not doing very well.
