There is a well of support a good number of judges and baptist churchgoers who are rallying behind the chief justice. If you look at bushs deferential in those two polls, iowa versus New Hampshire he isnt able to do that there. So i think you are right that might be a problem for him and his wisconsin record. But how will he play on the National Stage in . If you look at terrorism and Foreign Policy that is important right now how does scott walker deal with that . I think he is trying to turn the page and be more global obviously with the trip in london. And i always need you here malika, are you kidding me . But after a guy named barack obama being in a contiguous media argument with iowa. It doesnt hurt. And moving on to Chris Christie who i have all down. He is having so many problems between the vaccine thing and the ongoing investigations. Do you think he could yet come back in time to do well in either iowa or New Hampshire . Possibly. Iowa, maybe not because he has explaining to do there. His temperament and background. And then all of the real conservatives vying for that. New hampshire may be a better fit. Where hes able to catch on. South carolina not a great fit but florida where you have bush there. He has a lot of work to do in the invisible primary, let alone how he can fit in with the voters. In the last Midterm Election when the smallest number of voters in seven decades went to the polls, nearly six million couldnt vote because they were previously convicted of a felony. After previous conviction you cannot be guaranteed the returning right to vote. And we spoke to a woman at the center of an aclu lawsuit aiming to restore righting votes. Kelly griffin a stayathome mom from iowa had been through hard times. A survivor of Domestic Abuse she suffered from drug addiction and in 2008 she was convicted of a drugrelated crime and given five years probation. But now she was turning her life around. And voting was a right of passage. I felt, god, i mean it is one of the steps to being back into society. To fulfill to feeling like im just like everybody else. Ive overcome a lot. She even took her kids to the polls to teach them about the democratic process. They were running around the building where we were voting. It was very chaotic. But it was still important. But not long afterwards griffin got a phone call from an agent with iowas division of criminal investigations. He was parked outside of her house and he said he wanted to verify the signature on her Voter Registration form. I was worried that i had done something wrong and i was scared that i didnt know what would happen next. And what did happen next . I was arrested. She had been charged with illegal voting. Part of an Aggressive Campaign by iowas then secretary of state republican matt schultz, to raise concerns about fraud as he pushed for a voter i. D. Law. Schultz, who didnt return our call for comment waste nod time in blasting out a press release protesting eight other felons voting illegally. Dont know why someone would want to spend 800,000 to stop someone from voting, especially the small number they went after. When she began her probation in 2008 she was told by her lawyer that once she completed her probation that she could restore her right to vote and that was right at the time. But when Terry Branstad took office that changed and requires them to go through a lengthy process to gain the benefit. I thought someone from the department of corrections should make that clear that i wasnt aloud to allowed the right to vote. And last year she was granted the right to vote. I wasnt sure how i would handle that and how my children would handle not having a mother. She would get to stay with her kids but still disen disenfranchised disenfranchised. Now she is the plaintiff in a lawsuit brought by the aclu aiming to restore her Voting Rights and thousands of others convicted of felonies. And jack ross joins me on this story and many others. And this sounds insane that people would try to jail her thinking she could vote again. But what are the remedies to try to get rights restored for people convicted of felonies. There is a story in the daily beast that conservatives are opting to let former nonviolent felons back and then say they can get the right to vote. That is a creative way to do it. I dont know how far that proposal will go. But what this shows is the felon disenfranchisement laws are being eevaluated by democrats and republicans. And you have senator rand paul to change their law and bills in minnesota and even a petition drive in florida which is kind of a big the big kahuna on this one, where one in four black people cant vote because of the laws. So we are starting to see a shift in attitude and the shift in iowa is part of that.
