Country and put on trial in federal court. His trial would be held up for years, especially of a paragon of what the Supreme Court can o do. Even in cases of Huge National security and intelligence implications or where the defendant is an International Terrorist who wants every chance to get the u. S. Courtroom to denounce the United States and get people to root for his cause. The world trade bombing is part of how we know as a country that terrorism cases can be handled and handled well by our normal courts. You dont need to invent some Kangaroo Court system some where else to handle serious cases like that. The ramsey useyousef trial took about five months. There was nothing wrong with how it was conducted. The Appeals Court says the fairness of the proceedings which judge duffy presided was beyond doubt. Judge kevin duffy preside over the case in the Southern District of new york. One of the things he remembered in his career is that when it came time in that highprofile case, for him to sentence ramsey yousef, he got up and spoke on his own behalf and gave this rant about how proud he was to be a terrorist against the godless of the United States. One of the things he was remembered for. He responded to by citing to him multiple verses from the koran, not only explaining why hes getting life of 240 years but rebutting of yousefs own terms. Judge duffy sat on the bench, you ramsey, came to this country pretending to be islamic muslim. You were not seeking conversion, the only thing you want to do is cause death. Your god is not allah. You do it to satisfy your own twisted sense of ego. You are not fit to uphold islam. Your god is death. Judge duffy presided over a number of serious terrorism cases including another plot that yousef was voinvolved in blowing up planes. Judge duffy saw so many highprofile dangerous cases the that for years he and his family had a 24hour protection. Hes a remarkable career. He died today from coronavirus. He was in a short term rehabilitation facility after having been ill recently. He was 87 years old. His family confirmed that he tested positive and he did die today. It is not that his death is more important than any other. Hes one of the 4,700 americans who have been killed by the coronavirus. Hes one of the estimated 910 americans killed by this virus killed today. There is going to be obituarieo. The white house says it is. 100,000 to 240,000 americans whos going to die in the coming week and thats only if the country get it together to keep those numbers low. Those numbers are hard to imagine that big pertaining to individual people. Every one of those, 100,000 to 240,000 people. The old ones and the young ones and the ones with Health Issues or without them, people in hospitals or rural areas or in the city or ones who died outside the hospital because there is no room for them in the hospital. Theyre all are our responsibility. Theyre all part of our conscious now. As americans we are alive in this time. As we all take responsibility as citizens for trying to get our National Response to this virus in some kind of freaking order in order to minimize the number of deaths we ultimately going to sustain. Today is the first day of april. Here is what the month of march was like in america. Now that march has come to a close, we can see how march went. We started march 1st at 89 cases in the country. The next day was 110 cases and 130 and 160 and 229 and 446 and by the end of march it was 500 cases. By the end of the second week it was over 3,000 cases. 4,000 the next day and 8,000 the day after that. And 13,000. By the end of week three, we were over 34,000 cases. One week we went from 34,000 cases to over 140,000 cases. In the last two days of the month. We went from 140,000 cases to over 185,000 cases. Now tonight we are over 210,000 cases just for the month of april and there is no slowing down insight. The governor of louisiana held a press conference to highlight the feedback that while new york city remains the epicenter of the nations pain and death at this point of the epidemic. Right now if you want to talk about it statistically, the two counties of the highest rates in per capita are both in louisiana. 30 miles west of new orleans. They have the worst per capita rate in the country. Second is orleans perish. This is a crisis thats unfolding specific places in specific ways and involving specific people all over this country. Every american has died has a live story. Everywhere it applies to all of us, which is the thing that we dont have. Sometimes it is easier to see not looking at individual cases or individual lives and counties that are affected. Sometimes it is easy to see from afar. Here is us in context as of tonight. This is the data thats compiled daily by the data of the visualization at the financial times. You know look at upper part of this graph. The good news here is that the other two worse outbreaks on earth besides italy and spain. They are seeing their daily death toll plateauing. We are the worse outbreak. We got more cases by any country on earth right now. Look at our marker, it is headed straight up without any relief insight. We are not getting this thing under control. And still there are no National Measures in place to try to slow the spread. In italy, you can say what they are doing as a country. And french you can see what they are doing as a country. We are not doing anything as a country. The president asked why he did not propose a national stayathome order, he filled around with the question and ultimately landed on basically well, in some where like alaska, you would not need it. Take alaska, you would not need one there. They got 130 cases in alaska and there is a stayathome order in that state. Although the president had no idea about that. As of yesterday, the governor of the Third Largest state in the country, republican Governor Ron Desantis of florida still saying hes still not putting stayathome order because the federal government, the white house had not told him he should. The governor says as far as he can tell the white house did not want him to do it. Asked about that yesterday, Vice President mike pence basically concurred, yeah, we dont have any advice to give the governor. The task force will continue to take the posture that well defer to stay in local health sho local Health Pressures they deem appropriate. You do what you want. Florida is not doing the stayathome order because we have not told the governor to do one. Well, we are not in the business of that kind of thing. We defer, hes deferring to us and we defer right back. Whatever 20 million residents of florida. It took an appearance on the t today show for the Surgeon General of the United States meandering around the idea that there should be some federal direction on this key issue. Maybe. The more we stayathome, the less we spread the disease. My advise to america is these guidelines are a national stayathome order. My advise to america is these guidelines are a national stayathome order. Wait, there is a national stayathome order now or did you just issue one . We are the citizens of the worse coronavirus on earth, our death toll and numbers skyrocketed out of control. There are no National Policies in this country to try to slow it down. If you happen to be watching from the today show, you would heard from one official that his advise is that the guidelines that exists are national stayathome order. A National Policy to try to slow the epidemic that already killed hundreds of thousands of americans. After the unplanned blurt by the Surgeon General about what he now maybe says may be a national stayathome order, after that Florida Republican ron desantis decides today that now hell put a stayathome order in effect in his state because now maybe he believes he had the instruction from the white house or he heard a slip of the tongue by a single official on tv that suggested that maybe that was his permission slip in maybe it may be a good idea . Governor desantis issued the stayathome order. After we got the same word from the governor of georgia who issued his own stayathome order at long last today. After saying i kid you not that he only just learned today, he just heard that people who are aso aso asymptomatic can spread the virus. He never heard that before today. The cdc announced individuals can be infected and spread the virus earlier than they thought even if they had no symptoms. This is a revelation and a game changer. A revelation . To everybody whos been on the planet, governor kemp, no stayathome order until today. He had no idea until todays reser revelation. Also the feedback that tom brady left the patriots and daffodils come up this time of the year. Governor kemps stayathome order just occurred to him today because of his reservelation. Hes not going to sign until tomorrow and hes not going to put into effect until friday. He only had this reservelation today. Why rush . The governor is going to put this into effect on friday and he just learned today about asymptomatic that people are spreading it. Crazy, right . Actually over road efforts by mississippi counties and towns trying to keep them safe, after that remarkable display from the mississippi governor today he announced a stayathome order as well. He too is waiting until friday night to put it into effect. Why . I dont know. Mississippi has another day and a half before it kicks in. Who knows . Pennsylvania put one in order today. Now they got their statewide one. Governor tom wolf and nevada got their stayathome order today. That still leaves a bunch of american states with no stayathome orders eventhough all of these states have rising numbers of coronavirus cases. These states are places have no stayathome orders or some stayathome orders but not for the whole state. Every single one of those states without a stayathome orders have coronavirus cases. Every state in the country has coronavirus case numbers that are rising. Nobody is exempted, kmcase numbs are going up everywhere. Case number rise exponentially. If you got any, you are about to have a lot. But without a National Policy for what we are supposed to do to head off those rising numbers, that kind of patch work is what you get. Maybe the governors dont have stayathome orders or maybe they did not watch the today show, there was a stayathome order . Which some says never the less to interpret as our federal governments new policies. It is insane at this point. It is insane at this point. You look at the other countries in the world that have outbreak as bad as us. Well, we stand alone. You look at other countries in the world who had terrible outbreaks at least they had a National Policy. It is insane. It is fatal. It is insane in terms of policies and leadership and ethics. It is also insane in terms of how grossly mismanaged the federal government piece of this already is. Look how they are handle this. Cnn reports that the pentagon offered a 2,000 ventilators theyre going to make available for civilian use and more than a dozen certified labs theyll be available. Those offers and more than a couple of weeks ago by the pentagon have not been taken up. Have not been taken up by the Trump Administration. Fema and the Trump Administration, they just elected not to tap those resources from the pentagon and even individual hospitals and mayors all scrambling for themselves to try to find those things where they can. One of the places they can find them is our pentagon but the Trump Administration left that stuff sitting. And stockpile of emergency supplies. Sending things out states like illinois and massachusetts are not getting what they are asking at all. The federal stockpile is basically gone. Although the white house appears to have no idea of that. If they do understand it, they have not been honest about it. Here is the Washington Post tonight. The governments emergency stockpile of respiratory masks and gloeves and medical supplie are exhausted. Two department of Homeland SecurityOfficials Say the stores kept in the Human Department health of Services StrategicNational Stockpile are nearly gone. Despite assurances in the white house that there is availability. Why is the white house giving states and mayors assurances that there is availability if there is not. Did they know that, that stuff is gone . Which is worse . If they dont know and they are saying out of ignorance or they do know that stuff is gone and theyre telling people it is fine, it is plenty eventhough they know it is not there. Which is worse . Practically it has the same effect, right . Because the white house have not tried to nationalize these supply chains even today, ppe and other critical medical supplies, u. S. Companies that manufactures that kind of stuff had been selling personal protective equipment thats desperately needed for hospitals. U. S. Companies have been selling it overseas, sending it to other countries instead of making it available here. U. S. Manufactures of this stuff. People who got it in warehouses and in this country are exporting it. The federal government have not told them it is a bad idea or they should be doing it. Forbes reporting that roughly 280 Million Masks were purchased by foreign buyers to be sent out of this country because the federal government has not made arrangements to keep that ferti materials here. Fema has not actively encouraged our discourage u. S. Companies from exporting such materials seas. Tthe Washington Post reportin that the Trump Administration did not make any efforts to stop exporting shipments or seize supplies for use in the u. S. Hospitals. The New York Times the reporting that thousands of ventilators, the federal government does have in their stockpiles. Thousands of those machines do not work because the Trump Administration allowed the contract to maintain these machines to last, last summer. Of course, they did. Please let us have a new federal government, at least just for this. 4,700 american lives in counting. This is still how bad they are how far into this. This far into it, not just the case that this virus is the crisis and this Infectious Disease is spreading in the United States and we have to cope with it and its got exponentially growth. It is not just the natural attack of the virus, this far into it with us, with us this much exposed to it already, closing in on 5,000 americans dead by tomorrow, right . With the white house expecting and hoping that theyll keep the death range for americans between 100,000 to a quarter million people. This far into it, the federal government, the stuff they are actively in control that nobody else is, that stuff does not get better ever. Theyre not naturalizing, the na National Supply chain. Everyo theyre not able to get it together to do that even when the military volunteered. The stuff they got, they have not been keeping in running order because they let the Maintenance Supplies contract lapsed. Theyre not getting any better you guys. Maybe today the Surgeon General declared a national stayathome order. Maybe today . Maybe that was a mistake. Still, it sort of went into effect in a few states. The states continue to model on alone. In new york, the retired commissioner brought back on board to coordinate the supply and distribution of ppe, protective equipment among hard hit hospitals in the city. Facilities are being built at places like detroit at their Convention Center, facilities thatll take coronavirus patients as a relief for detroit hospitals. Questions being raised as to why the federal government helping in new york designated for non coronavirus patients only. A source tells us tonight that the u. S. Naval ship comfort pulled into the new york harbor to graze fanfare. The comfort has fewer than 5 patien patients. The Javits Center where they set up four field hospitals with 250 beds each. Theyre going from a thousand bed and right now the Javits Center have fewer than 10 patients. Why is that . Tell me why the federal government decided neither of those facilities can have coronavirus patients. We start to get towards that math. This is developing story, swrwe have more on that coming up. Well talk to the governor of Washington State. Washington state had to confront the nations first case, the nations first death and first large cluster of cases. There has recently positive noises of the case loads in Washington State particularly in the seattle area potentially slowing down and flattening out in terms of how quickly it is spreading and how many people are getting infected. If those positive noises are accurate. If it does reflect as positive change in Washington State, you should know it is painfully mixed picture there. Washington states rising number of cases is still a steeply rising number of cases as you can see here. And the governor of that state jay inslee over the past couple of days expressed concerns of unexpectedly high positive test rates in tests that are being done. Governor inslee is pleading to stop making whatever they need now and instead to make equipment for healthcare workers. We are too big of a country and too many, tens of thousands and ho hundreds of thousands and millions of lives on the line for the gofrt vernment to conti to fail as they have been. They must get it fixed. It is here now and it is killing thousands of americans. For now the federal government is a complete failure. And so what we are doing to cope as a country, some states are doing better than other. All states got to do it on their own. Governor jay inslee from Washington State joins us live after. Us kids are ready to take things into our own hands. Dont think so . Hold my pouch. We need to seize your own destiny and we need to now do what we did in world war ii. The people in the Washington State built b29, in seattle they built mine sweepers and now is time for all of us to turn to manufacturing, the equipment that we need in this fight and this war and this century, we need the items that you see on your screen. We need a businessmbusinessmen turn to make surgical masks and testings kit. We need vile that are important part of this task. We need masks, n95 masks and all these equipment. We believe theyre the best talent in the world in makining things that are manufactured here in washington. Governor inslee is asking people to adapt and help fight the coronavirus. Please start making the equipment that the states need. Joining us now is governor jay inslee, thank you for joining us tonight. I know you are incredibly busy. Thank you. You have been dealing with the coronavirus since the very beginning. The death toll of Washington State, it is 247 deaths right now in the state. Thats right. How do you assess where the state is at in terms of your position on the curve and what your Lessons Learned by what you have done right now . Well, we have had some modest bending of the curve last week wch. We saw light reduction of that curve. We think our progress has been good relative to other states and there is such difficulty. Our heart bleeds for new york and new jersey tonight. The last few days we had a little bit of slippage and what we have found is we have done well in the seattle region that did not occur. We had some increases in our rural areas. I think this is a lesson for the nation that even if we get a little progress in one area, we have got to have a consistent National Response. This has to be a National Response to a national threat, otherwise, even if we do have progress in one city or one state, if other areas blow up, it is just going to come right back to haunt us across the nation. I think one of thele lessons ar yes, you can make progress if you do early social distancing. We have been early in our state. Dr. Birx at the white house says shows that we have done relatively well. We are not out of the woods. The rural areas need to get on board and other states need to get on board. This is where you president ial leadership as well. Other lesson we have to realize is that we are so desperate for ppes. We are desperate for test kits. We are sending nurses in who dont have what they need. We need to nationalize our manufactures as we have in world war ii. We can get people tested as they need to be. That can only happen by president ial leadership. You made a plea today to Washington State business to if not literally retool then to assess and start making changes right now if they are capable of making anything thats appropriate for personal protective equipment that you want state manufactures to start doing that. Have you had any Immediate Response to that . Is that shot in the dark . Do you expect washington manufactures are going to transition quickly to make the stuff that you ask for today . Yes, i think well have considerable success. Just an example of the research of dan in ordnordstrom that got this battle. Hes going to be turning out 1500 masks a day in a few weeks. We are making surgical gowns in our prison industry. We talked to a company today called ssquare. They make the medium where you put the test in and i spoke to a woman in spokane, i think well have success. We didnt win world war ii on voluntary efforts. If we are going to have this Large Company bringing assets to bear, they ought to be required to do so. Now we have small baby steps in that drerkirection. I urged the president to invoke the defense act, he did not do that. The next thing he did do it for ventilators. He need to do it for manufactures of masks and gloves and visors and test kits. The capability of our Business People is so creative. The other day a fella had an idea about making visors using 3d printers. They are now turning out 100 or more visors a day in a matter of 24 hours. We are capable of doing this but it needs to be a national effort. Let me ask, governor, today is rent day for many people. You issued an order for people not to be evicted, do you expect you will extend that order. The country is shutdown, we are telling people not to work. Do you expect those measures can be extended if that needs to happen . I believe so. It is the fair thing. We cant have more Homeless People on the street as we are fighting this virus. We are making progress with mortgage holders and banks to prevent foreclosures while we are going through this. We dont know how long it is going to last. We were highly likely to extend our stayathome and healthy initiatives. Yes, it is the right thing to do. Now, this is not easy for folks, retired couple who may rent a house out, too. It is not easy for them. Everyone is going to feel some economic pain but we want to reduce it as far as possible. Increasing employment compensation, we are doing the same thing in the state of washington. We got to pull together with this. I have been encouraged by people pulling together and helping each other. We have got a long way to go yet. Governor jay inslee. The great state of washington. Thank you very much for talking to us. Thank you. Here is the difference between the one in l. A. And new york. Governor of new york says he asked for the Javits Center set up in a way that could house coronavirus patients. The federal government says no. The l. A. Convention center is a different story. Their Convention Center, medical buildout will be done in a way where it may house coronavirus patients, people that have symptoms that do not full hospitalization. In detroit, the center there is to house coronavirus patients. The u. S. Army corps of engineers plans to turn Mccormick Place into 3,000 beds. In new york city, the epicenter of the american outbreak in new york city dealing with thousands of patients already overwhelming many new york hospitals, the Javits Center setting up federal help is not taking coronavirus patients. The Javits Center in total has ten beds, ten patients and none of whom had virus. The usns, comfort, we are told the comfort tonight had fewer than five patients, again, none of whom are coronavirus patients. The defense in washington said that could change. So far it is not taking coronavirus. A source familiar with the situation tells us the reason for that is because the federal government is not allowing coronavirus patients to be admitted to the javits and the comfort. All this makes you wonder, is new york city getting the help its needs. New york city is getting a bunch of help but not getting the right kind of help. If they are asking for these federally built facilities to be coronavirus facilities, why did the federal government thus far have said no to them when they said yes to other cities who asked them the same thing. Lets ask somebody at the front line. Thats next, stay with us. Hold my pouch. Trust us. Us kids are ready to take things into our own hands. Dont think so . Hold my pouch. He is sick and he is just back from treating ebola patients in west africa. Sources tell nbc news dr. Craig spencer called the department of health at 11 52 complaining of fever, nausea and fatigue. 911 was called and they determined his symptoms were consistent with ebola. Three weeks after that, dr. Craig spencer did recover from that harrowing experience. A the few months later he wrote about being on the front lines of that viral outbreak. He said as a clinician and epidemiologist, ive worked in places just miles from active conflict and managed to grow used to the sight of soldiers and sunday of gunfire. This makes me uneasy. That is ebola. Dr. Craig spencer is on the front lines again in new york fighting coronavirus. This is how he describes his days now. Walk in for your 8 00 a. M. Shift. You mask up, walk in. Nearly every patient is the same, cough, shortness of breath, fever. Youre notified of another real li ly sick patient. Patients both in the rooms next to each other both getting breathing tubes. It not even 10 00 a. M. Yet. Youre afraid to actake off the mask. It the only thing that protects you. In africa you spent hours in a hot suit without water. One more patient. Joining us now is dr. Craig spencer. Hes a new york city emergency room doctor and the director of Global Health. Thank you for making time to be with us. Thank you. Youve been through your share of things in your not particularly long life. I want to ask what youve seen in new york since the influx of patients started, if it seems like new york is adapting. If clinitians a learning what to do if hospitals are falling apart and Getting Better how to treat these patients in such distress . Such an important question. I survived ebola but i see your covid19, the reason is because i know the physical exhaustion and the mental orange rish than comes with it. You mention a bit of the piece i wrote five years ago. Ive never seen so much sole current in the u. S. We have attendings from you are ro urology coming to help up out and all the patients that are increasingly coming into the e. R. And intubated and put on mechanical ventilation and the beds are filling up. The rate is increasing but also a big lag between when people get infected and when they show up and see me and we determine whether or not they need a breathing tube and that the many weeks off. All of us on the front line are concerned and ready. The question is do we have the supplies . Do we have the beds and medications and things we need to do this the best . Were a couple weeks into very wide spread National Concern about new york City Hospitals and clinitians and hospitals being well resourced enough and enough to take care of themselves. Has this discussion translated at all in a way youve been able to see in terms of more resources getting to you, more equipment getting to you, more, even more people being brought on board to share the load . Look, it day by day. Were trying to get a few days in front of this. The needs will be huge in the next couple weeks. We need people here now. We need help. Just today my hospital put out a call for medical volunteers. Not only will that help us on the front line here but people will get the skills they need, will be able to take care of coronavirus patients and well go to wherever you are and wherever your family is and wherever your community is impacted as this virus strolls across the country. One of the biggest things i have from our response in 2014 in west africa to ebola is that in the u. S. We didnt really have one. We prepared domestically but didnt send providers, relatively few compared to every other developed nation in the world. We have so few people used to spending days in personal protective equipment, seeing people die in front of them that were normal a few hours earlier, working with low resources, we learned valuable skills that are super essential now and un unfortuna unfortunately, we dont show up five years ago and were paying the price for it now. Dr. Craig spencer, director of Global Health and emergency medicine at Colombia University medical. Appreciate you being here, you and your colleagues have our thanks and appreciation. Stay in touch with us. Thank you. Well go to work every day for you. All right. Thanks. Well be right back. All right thanks well be right back.
