All time. When you are the most scandal plagued president in the history of the country, not just since watergate but in the history of the country. When you have literally been named by prosecutors as individual one in the commission of multiple felonies, when your business and foundation and inaugural committee have all come under criminal investigation while you are serving as president and your foundation was shut down by authorities as an illegal fraud. When you literally had to start your presidency by paying a 25 million settlement to settle other totally unrelated allegations. When your long time personal lawyer have gone to prison and Campaign Chairman is in federal prison and so as your National Security adviser, when literally your sister had to resign to the judiciary because of her involvement in a long running multi Million Dollars criminal tax fraud scheme. A scheme that was run by her brother which is you, the president. W when all of those things are true by the president , yeah, you will get some challengers. You will get challengers for that job that you novel. With a record like that, with just that balance sheet, you will get a lot of challengers for your job even if you were not a president who went online and started ranting like a dark side version. So yes, i think it is fair to say that the Democratic Party knew. I am positive and i didnt say the president these days, today in particular sounds like hes being translated through a few different Foreign Languages all in caps and needless to say. The Democratic Party knew a lot of people were going to get into the primary to try to earn the right to challenge the president on behalf of the Democratic Party. It is fair to say that the Democratic Party did not know that they would feel the largest president ial primary of all time. We thought 17 candidates in the 2016 republican field was nuts. Democrats this year blew through that record and kept going, not 17, well go 18, 19 or 20 or 21, how high can they go . I dont think the Democratic Party could have anticipate it and even a field this large that the inclusion rule would result in 20 Democratic Candidates making the stage on those debates. 20. Thats how it worked out. Once that remarkable result was clear though, the Democratic Party took steps to make sure the third debate would be a tougher ticket. You would have to opt your fund raising race of 130,000 donors and you would hit 2 of National Polls or early stage polls. At least four polls, you will need 2 . Those were not terrible rules. Those are tougher rules than in place for the first two debates. The new tougher third debate rule thus far looks like theyre going to result in significantly fewer Democratic Candidates making on stage. Maybe roughly half. I mention the dacuteness of the funneling angle here. Part of the way you can see that as the number of kacandidates going from this big to this big. Candidates are being squeezed out as a result of these rules, theyre mad about it. As you may imagine, theyre not just stewing on it, they are publicly saying so. I am proud to be a democrat, i stand here grateful for the work you do day in and day out to strengthen our party. I am ready to lead your party next november. I got to be honest and i say it with love. The dnc process is stifling deba debate at a time when we need it most. We are alerting celebrity candidates with millions of twitter followers and billionaires who buy their way onto the debate stage and candidates who have been running for president for years. It forces campaign to force over millions of dollars to facebook the same platform that led the russians interfered in 2016 instead of harnesses resources to talk to voters. If we want to exclude the people, we would be republicans. These rules have created exactly the wrong outcomes and theyll not help us beat donald trump. I am not going to be on the debate stage next month but i am going on out in iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina and nevada building constituency for change this country needs. Colorado senator Michael Bennett at the national party, big summer meeting in san francisco. Thats resulting in him among others and not getting into the third round of debates. So the democrats were not going to make the september debate and at least some of them are expressing their anger and frustration and arguments against this process which is having the effect of widowing them out of this process. As senator bennett alluded to there. I am not going to be on the debate stage. It is possible that campaigns can build support and momentums some way other than the debates, right . When candidates dont make it onto those debate stages. Thats a heavy lift. The candidates know that. And so in addition to that kind of angry statement that you got now from Michael Bennett and some of the other candidates are getting squeezed out from the third debate. The other thing that the september debate rules are doing is they are pushing some ka candidates out of the race entirely. When those candidates confront the realization they are not going to make it on the next debate stage. That looming september debate, third debate started a sort of shedding season, where candidates are now starting to take thels omselves out of the. The parties will have some way to determine who makes it on the debate stages and who does not. Otherwise, you have a debate stage with a thousand of people with prank kancandidate is. There always has to be some criteria. Thats always the case in every campaign. There will always be some controversy that ateptends to tt in terms of constraining of who gets in that debate. The next debate thats coming up, this is also you know it is po obviously shaking the democrats who are not going to make on the debate. It has an effect of shining a spotlight and directing scrutiny into smaller candidates thats making into that funnel. Thats going to be in contention on that soon to be much smaller stage. So tonight i want to take a look at the strength of that field. In part of my thinking about this tonight is that things are crazy right now in the news. And everybody is able to follow the headlines over the course of the day. There is a lot that we can offer on the daily news everyday and every bit of craziness that emerges from the administration. When it comes to democrats who are trying to replace the president. Talking about them on their own terms i feel like sometimes stopping or looking at what these democrats are offering and give you a much clearer view rather than trying to see them or see them. Focus on them for a second. We did this once before. And we actually got more positive feedback from you guys than anything else we have done from this tv show in this hour this entire year. It was right after the first debate. The one that was hosted by msnbc and telemundo and nbc. The one we did in miami. We did a whole show that was democratic candidate putting their best foot forward because the reason these debates are such a huge deal, the reason it is a fantastic high stake decisions for dnc progressively making the rules harder and harder so there are higher barriers for candidates getting into the debate. It is not just a killer to be absent from that debate stage. It is because once you do make it onto that debate stage. You can do yourself so much good. I swear. I swear every single light and every single candidate has given themselves something to build on. Some moments and some high points or some glimpse of the best of what they had to offer. Not every candidate is seen winning of the debate. A moment that gives someone who may not be supporting them yet to turn their head even though they have not been thinking about them before. I know pheadlines of who won th debate or who made the impression or who did not . I get that. I am apart of that ecosystem, too. Good well run campaign does not need to count on headliners or the cable news or the big over view stories in the network news about whos winning and everybody else. More than ever before and the kind of media landscape. What a candidates need to move ahead to expand his or her campaign to raise money and make you see them and even if you have not been able to see them before. More than anything what candidates need are good moments. Capturable, reputable moment that we can build on. We think of these debates in terms of winners and losers. Being on the debate stage means you win at this point in the campaign. We have done this on the show once before. We did it where we only have one debate. As we are heading into the crucial third one which is going to have a wildly different field, this is half the candidates that we saw many the first two. I will prover it to you, being on that stage has already given everyone of them a chance to do themselves some good. All of them. Thats why making this third debate is so priceless. I will show you. Randomly, drawing at random. I will show you any candidate from the list. Pick one. I will prove it to you. Bernie sanders. All right, senator sanders. Lets start with him in the first debate. In the first debate, senator sanders knew hes going to get this question of republicans framing the party of socialists and donald trump socialism. The problem with that framing when you put it to Bernie Sanders is that sort of framing only works in a bad way if the person you asking to is uncomfortable of the concept or republicans framing on this issue is working on that person somehow. When instead you put that question to Bernie Sanders, what you get is a candidate who absolutely positive linly who k who he is and will take your alphabet and turn it around and make it into the best part of he is own pitch or campaign. What is the response to those saying nominating it a socialist would reelect donald trump . Well, i think the responses at the polls last poll i saw had a tenpoint ahead of donald trump because the American People understand that trump is a phony, trump is a pathological liar and a racist and that he lied to American People during his campaign. He said he was going to standoff for working families while President Trump, well, you are not standing up for working families when you are trying to rip off 32 Million People off of their healthcare and 83 of your tax benefits go to your top 1 . We expose him for the fraud that he is. Thats what i do with your socialism question. Senator Bernie Sanders in the first debate having his best moment of that debate and ripping up this idea of the socialism as some sort of kryptonite moment. That was the first debate. The second debate when he basically turned into a human shredder who made an ill consider decision that hell wander and insert himself into senator sanders own well real house. Senator sanders knows who he is. If he does throw a lightning boll bulb at you, it tends to explode when we does that. Can you guarantee those Union Members that the benefits for medicare for all will be as good as union reps fought hard. It covers all healthcare needs for Senior Citizens and dental care and hearing aids and eye glasses. You dont know that. Second of all. I do, i wrote the damn bill. Second of all, many of your union, brothers and sisters, they are now paying high deductibles and copayments. When we do medicare for all, instead of having the company putting money into healthcare, they can get decent wages kudos for cnn keeping the screen split for paul. It was just, that was it. Senator Bernie Sanders night one and fight tnight two in the. Andrew yang. Entrepreneur, tech guy. Andrew yang will be in the next debate. Hes running a campaign that does not sound like any of the rest of the campaigns and thats on purpose. That means that pun dependadante press does not know what to do with him. He got a slam bang social media presence. He easily made it into this next debate. It was not he was cut so close. Andrew yang, they add up the amount of time. Andrew yang is the closest. He does not take up a ton of time. He does not need to because hes not saying a bunch of stuff. When he talks, it lands in part because hes saying things that are unique. Democrats and americans of our country have one question for the nominee and that is who can beat donald trump in 2020. Thats the right question. The right candidate to beat donald trump will be solving the problem that got donald trump elected and having the economy that is drawing thousands of trump voters and conservatives and libertarians as well as democrats and progressives. I can build a much broader coalition to beat donald trump. It is not left, it is not right. It is forward. Thats where i will take the country in 2020. Neither side, forward. Thats andrew yang. At that point, hes really introducing himself to the country. Obviously he has enough supporters and donors to get into that first debate. For the broader audience watching at home, millions of people watching theyre like who is this guy andrew yang . Thats his out of the gate introduction night one. Strong. In detroit, debate two, even a stronger performance. He not only got applause but talking about the economy that did not sound like other candidate. It just set him apart and it worked. If you go to a factory here in michigan, you will not find wall to wall immigrants. You will find wall to wall robots and machines. The problem is so many people feel the economy has left them behind. We have to say look there are record high gdp and stock market prices. You know what are record highs . Suicides and drug overdoses and it gotten so bad that our American Life expectancy has declined. We know thats the opposite of the truth. We know her work is among the most challenging and vital. Entrepreneur tech guy, andrew yang. He he mass made the cut for the third debate coming up. I showed you two clips to show you how much good he has done himself at his debate performances. I can prove to you all of the candidates who are going to be on the debate stage had done themselves good. Thats why this next debate is so important. We got more ahead, stay with us. I wish i could shake your hand. Granted. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. I was told to begin my aspirin regimen, blem. And i just didnt listen. All of our candidates qualified for the three debates. How have they done in previous debates. Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Carolina. He teaches the whole country how to say his name. The whole country has learned how to say his name and learned who he is. He distinguished himself by his eloquence and other things. Also, by his willingness and vicinity to talk about his issue, faith, which he did here. The Republican Party likes to focus itself in the language of religion. Now our party does not talk about that as much largely for a good reason. We are committed of the separation of kmuchurch and sta. For a party that associates itself with christianity to say that it is okay to suggest that god would smile on the division of families at the hands of federal agents that god would condone putting children and cages have lost all claims to ever use this language again. Listen to that. Mayor Pete Buttigiegs debate night one. Here is as clip from debate to. Honestly, this clip, ni dont know why this did not get national debate. Watch this part here where hes talking directly to the camera when he addresses republican of congres whos watching the debate. Watch how the room just erupts. We have to be ready to take on this president and something that has not been talked about much tonight. Take on his enablers in congress. When david duke when david duke ran for congress, the Republican Party 20 years ago ran away from him. Today they are supporting naked racism in the white house. If ru watyou are watching this e and republican member of congress, consider the fact that when the sunsets on your career and they are writing your story of all the things you did and the things you will be remembered for whether this moment of this president , you found the courage to stand up with him or you continue to put the party in this country. I dont know why that has not gotten more play since then. I think it was a phenomenon moment. Joe biden. Front runner in the polls, night one, first debate, he knew hes going to take shots from other candidates and he did and most effectively from Kamala Harris. Joe biden starts out the first debate not assuming you know who he is and reintroducing himself to the American People and showing the human empathy and experience that has made him a beloved and hard to beat figure in the Democratic Party for decad decades. When my wife and daughter and my two boys were bad ly injured i could not imagine what it would be like not to have adequate healthcare and my son came home from iraq, he was diagnosed with cancer. I could not fathom what would have happened, by the way, the last six months of your life, you are on your own and cutting off. The quickest and fastest way to do this is to build on obamacare and build on what we did. Joe biden in the first debate. He would go on in that debate. Remember he got pummelled by some of his opponents. Watch this. Look at his opening for the second debate. Opening with this embrace of all of his rivals and it turned to President Trump. That brings down this. I want to restore the soul of this country. No one man has the capacity to rip it apart. It is too strong. We are too good. Look at this stage, made up of Diverse People from diverse background, mayors and senators and congresswomen, members of the cabinet and yes, even a vice president. Mr. President , this is america. We are strong and great because of this diversity mr. President. Not in spite of it mr. President. Lets get something straight. We love it and we are not leaving it, we are here to stay and we are certainly not going to leave it to you. The stacked applause line is a big thing in performance. Knowing the time you get the end of that delivery, you have warmed them up. I am telling you, you can do this for every single one of them. Beto orourke. Beto orourke, texas congressman, in the first debate, the biggest thing that beto orourke got attention for was negative was the way his home state rival Julian Castro came for him like a repotman. I take it from you. That moment went to Julian Castro. Beto orourke talking about things his own way. He also brought good stuff. That first debate. It did not hurt that this was one of the only times of the whole debate night anybody raise the issue of impeachment. One of the most powerful pieces of arts in the United States capitol is the painting. At the hooieight of his power submitting to the rule of law. That stood and withtest its time. If we set another president now that a candidate who invited the participation of a foreign power, a president who thought to obstruct the investigation. Well upset a new standard and thats some people because of the position of power and public trust they hold are above the law. We cant allow that to stand. We must begin impeachment now so that we have the facts and the truth and we follow him as far as we go and as high up as we save this democracy. If we have not been able to do that in this year and the year that follows my administration, our department of justice will pursue this facts to ensure there is accountability and justice. It is the only way to save this country. Beto orourke in the first debate. The second debate. This is really something. I am not sure if people are talking about this at all. This moment happens on a tuesday night, the last tuesday in july. July 30th. Listen to what he says about race here and the president s antiimmigrant rhetoric. Listen to what he says about el paso how el paso is the antidote about that. I am about to play on a tuesday night at the end of july. The following saturday, the following weekend, four days later is when a professed nationalist drove himself to el paso citing the president s antiimmigrant rhetoric specifically killing latino immigrants. This was just before that. He calls mexicans criminals or secretary to ban the country. It is changing this country. Hate crimes is on the rise, every single one of the last three years. On the day he signs the executive border, the mosque and victoria, tax wexas, was burned the ground. We must stand up to donald trump and ensure that we dont tolerate or respect our differences but we embrace them. Thats what we have learned in el paso, texas. One of the safest cities in the United States of america, not despite but a city of immigrants and refugees. Congressman beto orourke, thank you very much. It is almost uncanning. It is unsettling frankly to see how impressive beto orourke was. That was a tuesday night. By saturday of that week, that was when a gunman would drive across texas to target el paso specifically to go kill latinos and immigrants there, to kill 22 people there after posting online quoting the president s attacks on some kind of immigrant investigation at the border. That weekend, congressman beto orourke left the campaign trail and hes back on the campaign trail now. Hell be on stage at debate night three. We got more ahead, stay with us. We got more ahead, stay with us. With advil liquigels, youll ask. What stiff joints . What bad back . Advil is. Relief thats fast. Strength that lasts. Youll ask. What pain . With advil liquigels. And then i jump on the trampoline ahh brain freeze no, its my teeth. Your teeth hurt . Sensitivity. I should see my dentist. My teeth have been really sensitive lately. Well 80 of sensitivity starts at the gum line, so treat sensitivity at the source. New crest gum and sensitivity starts treating sensitivity immediately, at the gum line, for relief within days and wraps your teeth in sensitivity protection. Ohh your teeth . No, its brain freeze the remaining contender, amy klobachar. Shes not getting the kind of buzz cycles like some of the other candidates are. Steady, solid, hitting her targets one after the other. It is almost like a mnemonic device. Th i will tell you her campaign knew way out in advance they were definitely going to make this third debate and they did. Theyre steady. Thats what shes offering, practical, getting i dot done. The president went on fox and said peoples heads would spin when they see how much he would bring down pharmaceutical prices. 2500 drugs have gone up in double digits since he came into office. He gave 100 billion in giveaways to the pharama compan. We got nothing out of it. So my proposal is to do something about pharma and take them on and bring less expensive drugs from other country and pharma think they own washington well, they dont own me. Senator klobachar has won. Shes a practical legislature who passes bills. Shes progressive and realist. She got this mid western plug away at itism. It is the kind of stuff she can run on until the end of time. I have had it with the racist attack. I have had it with the president that says one thing on tv that has your back and you get home you see charges for prescription drugs for cable d colleand coll. You will hear a lot of promises. Yes, i have bold ideas, they are grounded in reality. Yes, i will make some simple promises. I can win this and i am from the midwest. I have won every race, every place, every time. I will govern with integrity. The integrity worthy of the Extraordinary People of this nation. Senator klobachar. Senior senator from minnesota. Senator Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts. Senator warren, debate one makes a splash. She just has a background as a debate champion. I think she has a debate scholarship. Her biggest moment, debate one. She takes her negative question of her Healthcare Plan being too much and too soon. She turns it into a chance to sell her Healthcare Plan to dispatch the idea of being political liability and sort of bring the house down while shes teaching everybody what her plan is for healthcare. I spend a big chunk of my life studying why families go broke. Why one of the number one reasons is the cost of healthcare, medical bills. Thats not just for people who dont haves insurance. It is for people who have insurance. Look at the Business Model of an insurance company. It is to bring in as many dollars as they can in premiums and pay out as few dollars as possible for your healthcare. That leaves families with rising premiums and rising copays and fighting with Insurance Companies to try the get the healthcare their doctors say they and their children need. Medicare for all solves that problem. I understand there are a lot of politicians who say oh, it is just not possible, we cant do it. We have a lot of political reasons for this. What theyre telling you is trump wont fight for it. Healthcare is basic human rights and i will fight for basic human rights. Senator warren night one. Here is senator warren from the second debate. The punchiest moment she had where she rocked people out of their seats. She basically dispatched john delaney as a foil for more progressive candidates like her. This is what happens when you have a debate scholarship champion on stage. I get it. There is a lot at stake and people are scared. But what we cant choose a candidate we dont believe in, just because we are too scared to do anything else. We cant ask other people to vote for a candidate we dont believe in. Democrats win from figuring out whats right and get out there and fight for it. I am not afraid. For democrats to win, you cant be afraid. Congressman delaney, your response. Democrats win on Real Solutions and not impossible promises. When we run things that are workable. We need to encourage collaboration between the government and private sector and focus on those Kitchen Table pocketbook issues that matters to hardworking americans, building infrastructures and creating jobs. Thank you, congressman. Senator warren. I dont understand why everybody goes through all the trouble of running for president of the United States talk about what we can do and should not fight for. [ applause ] john delaney poof right there on stage. All right, well be right back. Stay with us. H us any physical changes to this mans appearance are purely coincidental. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. If you have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, every day can begin with flakes. Its a reminder of your struggles with psoriasis. So you only pay for what you need. Nice. But, uh. Whats up with your. Partner . Not again. Limu thats your reflection. Only pay for what you need. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty Kamala Harris. Senator Kamala Harris had the biggest moment of her campaign so far when she rocketed into the top tier Democratic Candidates after this moment, the direct confrontation with joe biden that nobody saw coming. And at least for a while this changed the weather in the whole democratic field. There is not a black man i know hes relative or friend or worker not subject of some form of growing up, we had to deal with neighbors that who told us that they could not play with us because we are black. In this campaign, i am going to direct this to joe biden, i do not believe you are a racist. I also believe and it was personal and it was actually hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senator who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country. And, it was not only that but you also worked with them to oppose bussing. And, there is a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her Public School and she was bussed to school everyday. That little girl was me. So i will tell you that on this subject, it could not be an intellectual debate among democrats, we have to take it seriously, we have to act swiftly. As attorney of general california, i was proud to put in place a requirement that all my special agents to wear body cameras and keep those cameras on. Senator harris, thank you. That moment in the first debate was devastatingly effective. Maybe she had been too effective. It was a call former mercy bec of how hard that hit. She became a top tier contender that shes good on her feet and she has a story thatll be at the certain of her campaign about this at as well. Here is debate night two. My entire career i have been opposed of the Death Penalty and that has never changed. I dare anybody who is in a position to make that decision to face the people i have faced to say i will not seek the Death Penalty. Thats my background and my work. I am proud of it. You can judge people when they are under fire and it is not about fancy opinion on a stage or when theyre in a position to actually make the decision. What do they do . When i am in a position whether to decide whether or not to seek a Death Penalty on cases that i prosecuted. History shows that and i am proud of those decisions. Thank you very much. Kamala harris debate night one. Debate night one was a break out moment for her but look at her hold out the stage on debate night two. Julian castro. Former housing secretary, he had his break out moment in the first debate as well. His campaign in the first 24 hours after that debate raised triple the amount they had raised than any other day in his Campaign Including h is launch day. It came largely on this performance which shows him not only a good debater but the first democrat willing to throw big and unrelifethreatenientin ways that made everyone do a double take. The reasons they are celebrati separating little children which they are using the act to incarcerate the parents and separate them. Some of us on this stage have called to end that session and terminate it. Some like beto orourke have not. I want to challenge all the candidates to do that. I think it is a mistake beto, if you want to change the system then we got to repeal that section. If not, let me respond to this briefly. As a member of congress, i help to introduce legislation to ensure we wont criminalize those seeking asylum. I am still talking about everybody else. I am talking about a comprehe comprehend sifr comprehensive of our laws. I am talking about millions of folks. A lot of folks that are coming are not seekinging sigh asylum. You said you were concerned of Human Trafficking and drug trafficking. Section 18, title 18 of the u. S. Code, title 21 and title 22 already covered human practice. I think you should do your homework. It is one thing to know your stuff on policies, it is not thing to know your opponents record and be able to quote it back to them in a way that former housing castro had that big moment on night one. Dang, whos that guy . And on the second debate we saw that same conferenidence again. He asked of the republican impeachment of bill clinton in the 90s. Should that be a cautionary tale about trump. Watch the very end. Watch the last line he gets in and the smile. I think that too many folks in the senate and congress have been spooked by 1998. I believe the times are different. In fact, i think folks are making a mistake by not pursuing an impeachment. The Mueller Report details he deserves it and whats going to happen in the fall of next year, 2020 and they dont impeach him. You see, you see, the democrats laughed at me on impeachment because i didnt do anything wrong. These folks always investigate me and when it came down after it, they did not go after me there because i did not do anything wrong. If Mitch Mcconnell left them off the hook, well be able to say sure it frames moscow and let him off the hook. Any time he says moscow, it should be followed after that. One more, well be right back. Ever since he stood for office. Democratic voters have heard of senator booker and know something about him. In this campaign, if the first debate, i think a lot of people heard for the first time that cory booker lives in inner city newa newark. Hes talking about a community where other National Political candidates dont set foot. Here he was on the first debate. I hear gunshots in my neighborhood. I hope i am the only one on this panel here had seven people shot in their neighborhood. Someone i knew was killed at the top of my block last year. For millions of americans, this is not a policy issue. This is an urgency. For those who had not been directly affected, theyre tired of living in the country to learn about reading and writing and arithmetic and how to deal with an active shooter in their school. It is the best opportunity any of them will have to make their campaigns bigger. That does it for us tonight. Well see you again on monday. It is time for the last word with ali velshi. They appreciate they have done a great job. We are five plus months against the thank you. You have a great weekend.
