I dont have access to Insider Information because i work here, i wish i did, but we have spent a considerable portion of today trying to report out details of this story, how it was handled, how big of a scandal this is, working on that since the news broke this morning. Its weird to report on a story directly about an organization youre part of. But when these things come up, thats what you got to do. Weve got that story ahead. Our colleagues at cnn had to deal with their own iteration of this story today. Senior producer on jake tappers show was fired from cnn for quote behavior attributed to producer that does not align with standards and values of cnn. Leaping from news media to congress but staying on the same story. One of the founders of the congressional black caucus, until recently senior democrat on the judiciary, longest serving member of the house period, john conyers, faced renewed and wider calls for resignation as allegations from former staffers continue to pile up. Nbcs channel 4 in detroit was first to report that plan is not resign from congress but announce after christmas, in january, that he will not stand for reelection next year. Thats the plan as of today according to channel 4, nbcs affiliate in detroit. Michigan Democratic Party has not yet weighed in on john conyers and amount of pressure on him from colleagues in washington appears even today to be in flux as several Democratic Congressional colleagues have called for his resignation explicitly. And as number of accusers has risen to four. In the house of representatives today, congress did vote to require annual antiharassment training for members of congress and their staff. Which really does seem like the least they can do. It will perhaps not surprise you to learn they decided to take that teeny, teeny, teeny, tiny baby step forward today in the bravest way possible. Decided to just say today that the vote was unanimous. Took it as voice vote. That news expands by one the number of russians connected to the putin government we now know made contact with the Trump Campaign or Trump Associates during the election or transition. But Rick Santorum mounted a comeback by becoming a permanent president ial campaigner. In 2012 he ended up last man standing against mitt romney. Weird for a lot of reasons. One is because Rick Santorum campaigned for presidency in 2012 by very earn easterly and sincerely in his santorum way, telling audiences stuff that was absolutely completely made up and bonkers. This video does show an incident that happened in netherlands in may of this year, small town outside of amsterdam. Not a video of muslim migrant beating up dutch boy. Neither of the 16yearold boys in the video sent out by the president today neither is migrant. Both are dutch and dutchborn. One with dark and one with blond hair but thats as as far as you can get from this actual video towards the president s use of it today to apparently just blatantly try to incite fear and hatred of muslims with something he made up for the purpose of doing that. British Prime Minister felt compelled to put out statement in response to the president s online behavior. Quote, it is wrong for the president to have done this. Them all being minors may have had a part in the lower sentences, didnt go to court. Not sentenced to prison. As you said this was taken down in the netherlands because victim didnt want it. For the president to use it this way, from your perspective as dutch reporter, covering your own government reacting to the Trump Administration, is our country seen differently now . From nbc news, this is today, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today, its a sad day. Andy lak sent the following note. Dear colleagues on monday we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by matt lauer. Represented after serious review a clear violation of our companys standards. As a result weve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in over 20 years hes been at nbc news, also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated sneincident. Complaint filed alleging inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace. Dont know much about the allegation but began in olympics coverage in sochi in 2014 and reportedly continued after that. Nbc news tells us that they found that allegation credible. Confronted matt lauer and he did not deny it. That led to the process of him being fired. Nbc also tells us that matt lauer was fired for cause, which implies he will not be paid out for rest of his contract but nbc news is not confirming that implication explicitly one way or the other. Nbc is our Parent Company here. Reporting on this story taking place in our own proverbial house as best as weve been able to report it out today. As far as i personally can tell, these are the open questions important as of tonight. Open questions that i should say we expect we should get answers to at some point. First one obviously, will there be more people who come forward with accusations about matt lauer . Already over the course of today thats started to happen. After firing was announced, variety published accounts from three women separate from the complaint made monday night. Once gave a colleague a sex toy as present and explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her. Left her mortified. Another day summoned different female employee to his office and dropped his pants, showing her his after, reprimanded her for not engaging in sexual act. Variety. And New York Times has reported at least two new women came forward today. One from former employee, mr. Lauer summoned her to office, locked door and had sex with her. Passed out, had to be taken to nurse. Felt helpless, didnt want to lose job. Didnt report because felt ashamed. Woman said asked her to discuss a story during a work day. Locked door can which he could do sitting at his desk. Regular security measure installed for high profile employees. Mr. Lauer asked her to unbutton blouse. Did. Stepped out from behind desk, pulled down pants. Bent her over a chair and had sex with her. This is the passout one. Sorry. Woke out on the floor of his office and mr. Lauer had assistant take her to a nurse. Never made advance again and never mentioned what occurred in the office. Did not report at the time because she believed she should have done more to stop him. She left the network about a year later. On wednesday the episode was reported to nbc news after told her supervisor who still works at network. Human resources representative has since contacted her. News about the firing. Happens overnight. Get the news this morning and then all of these detailed allegations unfold over the course of today. Those allegations have been in some cases reported to nbc news Human Resources. In several cases reported out in detail in variety and the New York Times. Thats one of the open questions, will more accusers come forward. Beyond that, now that there are multiple allegations with multiple nbc employees over multiple years, raises the question whether nbc had knowledge of allegations about matt lauer in the past. If so, how were they handled . Today variety made nonspecific claim that several women complained about his behavior and fell on deaf years. Nbc took issue with that. Prior to monday night we can say unequivocally management was never made aware of any complaints about matt lauers conduct. Nbc news tells us they are and have been looking into whether any current or former nbc News Executives had received any complaints about lauers behavior. So far not found. Also say no incidents of paying settlements related to past behavior. Also tells us that Human Resources will continue to field further allegations but its too early in the process to say whether nbc will continue to handle it internally or eventually retain a third party to come in and figure out what happened over all these years, all the accusations and whether or not nbc should have known before they say they did. Remain important open questions in the hours after matt lauers termination from nbc news. Also should tell you, nbc news has reached out to matt lauer for comment. Hes not responded. Joining us now, stephanie gosk. Unusual task to say the least. Of reporting this out for the organization. Whats today been like . Incredibly strange. Starts with gut punch and been very strange. Typically a story youre close to, you remove yourself from it. Im too close. Cant do it. Obviously cant do it here. Important thing for me is to make sure i report it in the same way that i would report cbs story about charlie rose i reported on last week. It gets difficult because im in this building. Some of the conversations ive had in this building have been on the record, things being shared publicly, obviously there are other conversations that i overhear amongst colleagues, things that are being said privately to each other that are things that typically a reporter might glob on to and want to report. I have to draw those lines by the nature of the fact im in this newsroom all day long. For instance, meeting held by Noah Oppenheim today to talk about all this. Not public on the record meeting. I chose not to attend it. Because it wasnt on the record. Because as i report the story, this is not something reporters not invited into it. I wasnt told not to attend, made the decision not to attend. Some of my colleagues noticed i wasnt there. Walked up to my desk and said x, y and z happened. I had to draw lines. They had offtherecord information and leaked it to you, put it on the record as source. Exactly. But its a difficult line to draw. Tricky. In terms of the way this unfolded today. Nbc says didnt know anything before monday night. Variety made a vague allegation that other accusers had reported concerns about lauer to nbc executives in the past and fallen on deaf ears. Nbc is taking issue with that. Saying as far as they know before monday night no nbc executive had ever current nbc news executive. That leaves open the question of previous nbc News Executives who have not spoken on the record to us about whether or not theyve received any past complaints. That issue is out there. There has been, happens in newsrooms. Rumors of variety and New York Times working on articles. Had been talk there was something coming out. In terms of nbc saying they didnt know anything before monday night, didnt know of this accuser before monday and her lawyer says the same. 6 00 they sat down with hr and Legal Department at nbc and laid out her story over a period of hours. And whats remark national this time line, rachel, is that you consider the fact it was 6 00 on monday night. By tuesday night, roughly 24 hours. Matt lauer was fired. Most high profile face in this company. His contributions, dont even have to tick them off to know how important they are to our news division. 24 hours is how long it took. A testament in part and nbc says this, to seriousness of what she is alleging and how credible nbc found the allegations on monday. And as andys statement also said, idea there might be other allegations out there. That combined together. I also think its important to make note obviously of this context were living in right now. What the last few weeks have been since the Harvey Weinstein story broke and the reaction this country has had to subsequent stories. That climate has to have played a role in this. Absolutely. Now that accusers are coming forward, can you confirm that more accusers came forward to nbc after the firing was announced . Two. Two more people at least came to nbc in addition to going to other News Organizations. And details in the New York Times, we dont know if those are the accusers that nbc has confirmed to us. Our understanding from nbc is two new accusers today since the accusations. And thats going to be important for this as News Organization and Corporation Going forward, question of whether or not if with lots of accusers over lots of years involving very powerful person in the company, will it turn out to be true no executives new, Company Really not aware and terminated as soon as they knew. And still needs to be reported out. And details of allegations and what the women went through, they dont want to come out publicly and name themselves but as look at issues and figure out where to draw lines and whats appropriate and inappropriate, this is murky territory, the details of what happened to them are extremely important to figure out going forward. Concerning white house president ial adviser and soninlaw Jared Kushner. We first learned in march about a meeting during the president ial transition between mike flynn, Jared Kushner and the russian ambassador, sergey kiss kiss kiss lee ac, but reported it was about something serious. About setting up a secret and secure Communications Channel between trumps Transition Team and the kremlin. Who needs a secret hotline to the kremlin and for what . Tonight we learned that Jared Kushner has met with the special counsel, Robert Muellers team of investigators, met with them earlier this month to ask questions about that meeting in the transition. Cnn was first to report that kushner had met with muellers team earlier this month but cnn sources told a different story about what mueller asked about. Told that kushner met with the team but asked to team specifically about mike flynn. Cnn source said the conversation lasted less than 90 minutes and nature of the conversation was principally to make sure he didnt have information to exonerate mike flynn. Getting news from times and cnn that kushner spoke with mueller, two different stories about what he talk to him about.
