Will join us to talk about the president s visit and update us on what the territory needs and wants to see done. Were now approaching the 48hour mark since the mass shooting that took place sunday night. And today Las Vegas Police, the Las Vegas Police department revived the number of injured upward to 530. Thats in addition to the 59 people so far who have died. Clark county Sheriff Joe Lombardo today confirmed that the search warrant on Stephen Paddocks second prop in reno, nevada, is over saying police obtained numerous electronics, five hand guns, two shotguns and more ammunition from the home. Sheriff lombardo confirmed paddock had set up cameras inside and outside his hotel room during the attack. Nbc obtained photos of the hallway outside the gunmans hotel room. Thats pretty much all we know about Stephen Paddock, the gunman, who shot over 600 people in las vegas and thats unusual. Typically by this point weve learned a lot more about the shooter and have some idea of the motive behind the attack. That was the case with the newtown massacre in 2012. The charleston shooting. The shooting of coeds at u. C. Santa barbara. The orlando nightclub shooting. The workplace massacre in san bernardino. In each of those cases, within 48 hours, we had social media profiles of the alleged killers, or information from relatives or cowork bears their state of mind. Thats not the case with Stephen Paddock who from what Law Enforcement told us so far had no social media profile. He either took measures to scrub it or never had any in the first place. The only information we have are his age, 64, he seemed to be well off, owned more than one property, one home and owned a lot of guns. The only people to come forward so far have been his brother, who expressed complete consternation, and the l. A. Times reported today the supervisor of a local starbucks noticed that paddock would often berate his girlfriend in front of them. Again, nothing so far in terms of a motive for the mass shooting. At this point, we actually know more about paddocks father, a bank robber that spent time on the fbis most wanted list than we do about the person whos committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern american history. Joining us now is nbc news intelligence and national actually, well hold off just a little bit. That press conference is beginning and were going to take you to that right now. And the las vegas metropolitan Police Department. Im going to provide you the final briefing for today. As promised in our last briefing, we now have the site up and running. Its a page listing Resources Available to our victims, family representatives of victims involved in the route 91 Harvest Festival shooting. Information on the site includes instructions how to report information if youre a witness. Important phone numbers on how to provide photo and Video Evidence as soon as we have information how to retrieve lost property. As the sheriff told you previously, well post that on the page, as well. After this incident, one of the most striking visuals in addition to the absolute carnage was the sheer amount of personal items left behind as people fled from the terror. One of the biggest items left were vehicles of the concertgoers. So for those people that are waiting to get that property returned to them, i have an update. There is a dirt lot on the corner of giles street between ali baba and mandalay road. Theres approximately 150 vehicles over there that citizens have not yet been able to recover. Those cars can now be picked up by the registered owner by meeting officers at the corner of reno and coval. Well have officers permanently assigned there, posted at the corner, to escort you to your vehicle. So again, we ask the owners of those vehicles that have patiently waited to get them back to meet our officers at the corner of reno and coval, bring your identification so we can match you back to your vehicle. The sheriff in the Previous Press conference was asked a number of questions by you and i understand in the insatiable appetite of the media that you want some answers. Im going to try to answer a couple of those questions that you asked, but im also going to just make it very clear to you that i need some patience from you. This investigation is a long time from being concluded. We recently went down to mandalay bay. I can tell you that were days away from completion of the processing of that room. Were getting very close to the completion of the processing of the site. We have significant amount of time left there, as well. However, the southbound portion of las vegas boulevard is now completely open. We are also working diligently as we speak, i believe, we just opened up two of the northbound lanes and the completion of the northbound lanes should occur sometime this evening. So bearing in mind the investigation is dynamic, ongoing, continuing and i dont have a lot of answers for you yet, and clearly understanding that nobody wants answers to why more than the police and the victims families. We have a responsibility to get it right, and so thats why its going to take time and thats why were going to take that time. However, there is some, i guess, at best interesting reporting about how long the shooting lasted and how long it took us to get into the room. First question is how long did the actual shooting last . Im prepared to give you information on that. The first call came into our dispatch center at 10 08 p. M. About shots being fired. The suspect, i can tell you that we know now he fired off and on for somewhere between nine and 11 minutes. We know that the suspect fired over a dozen or so volleys and we know that the firing by the suspect ceased at 10 19. So i want you to think about that. The minute the first minute the police are aware of shots being fired at 10 08 and it stops at 10 19. Thats a remarkable response by this Police Department. Also, another question that came up, how long was it before the s. W. A. T. Team entered the suspects room if somebody said 72 minutes and if why so long . As i just mentioned to you, as the sheriff mentioned previously in the briefing, we had patrol officers actually working another event at the mandalay bay who heard the shooting and took it upon themselves to form up into a team, enter the stairwell, begin ascending the floors, and also evacuating hotel guests. The s. W. A. T. Team had to arrive first at the mandalay bay before they could take action. As i mentioned earlier, there was a very Heroic Security guard who was shot during the search for that suspect. That Security Guard went up to the room. He was advancing towards the room when the suspect fired through the door at the Security Guard and struck him. He was able to Additional Information to the police on exactly which room we were looking at. However, at that time, its important to note the shooting had stopped. Were considering it a barricade at that point because its no longer an active shooter, were not hearing any further shots. The floors had been evacuated of the guests. The suspect was isolated and contained within a room. At the point that the s. W. A. T. Team made their decision based on when it was appropriate to enter. I want to make it clear again to you that while there was that slight delay, the suspect was no longer firing into the crowd. There was a question about the validity of the crime scene photos that somebody had leaked. I can confirm those are in fact photos from inside of the room. They are, in fact, photos of our suspect. And as the sheriff mentioned previously, we have all opened up an internal investigation to determine the source of the leaks of those photos to the public. You asked what we found in the sheriffs or in the suspects room, and the sheriff spoke a little bit about cameras being located. To clarify, there were two cameras located in the hallway so that the suspect could watch as Law Enforcement or security approached his room. And there was another camera placed inside the Hotel Room Door peephole so that he could see down the hallway. At this point, you had a number of questions about the weapons and the s. A. C. From the atf to my right, jim schneider, will answer provide a statement to you, but not take any questions. Good evening. Im special agent in charge Jill Schneider of atf San Francisco Field Division. Special agents from the San Francisco Field Divisions Las Vegas Field Office responded to the shooting that occurred on sunday. Additional agents from locations within the San Francisco Field Division as well as agents from atfs los angeles, dallas, phoenix and boston Field Divisions have been working on this investigation. We know that you have many questions regarding the firearms in this case. Theres also been a lot of unofficial information being recorded reported regarding the guns. Wed like to clear up any conflicting information regarding the number of firearms and the current status of the trace information. Please understand that this investigation is ongoing and i wont be taking questions at this time because were still working through our investigative findings but ill give you the facts that we have as of this time. Currently, 47 firearms have been recovered. These firearms were recovered from three different locations. Those locations consisted of the hotel room as well as verde and mesquite, nevada. They were purchased in nevada, utah, california, and texas. The gunman purchased rifles, shotguns and pistols. At this time none of the guns recovered appear to be homemade. There were 12 bump fire stocks identified on the firearms in the hotel room. The atf firearms and Ammunition Technology division provides determinations on devices such as bump fire stocks and their legality. The classification of these devices depends on whether they mechanically alter the function of the firearm to fire fully automatic. Bump fire stocks while simulating automatic fire do not actually alter the firearm to fire automatically, making them legal under current federal law. It is still being determined which firearms were used in the shooting. All of the firearms have been traced. We are still awaiting results from some of the firearms that were located at the mesquite residence. As the investigation proceeds, atf will continue to conduct interviews and conduct provide our resources and full support to the sheriff and all our local Law Enforcement partners. Thank you. Thank you. As this Investigation Continues on, we continue to hear stories of heroics by police officers, First Responders and average citizens alike. I commend all of their actions, as they showed immense courage in the face of extreme danger. I want to mention one of those brave people was a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer, charleston hartfield. Officer hartfield was at the route 91 concert that night along with his wife when shots rang out. Even though officer hartfield was at the concert as a civilian, he immediately took action to save lives. In that moment, he was acting as a police officer. He ultimately gave his life protecting others. Officer hartfield was an 11year member of the lvnpd and leaves behind a wife and two children. Were very grateful for his sacrifice. There will be a vigil to remember officer hartfield this thursday, october 5th, at the Police Memorial park at 6 00 p. M. As you all know, that park is located at 3250 Metro Academy way, and its being hosted by our police protective association. As this community has become accustomed when we do provide information in regards to our critical incidents, we release bodyworn camera footage to you. There is a significant amount of bodyworn camera footage that were going through. However, im going to play a clip on our new very large monitor for you of a compilation of a number of those bodyworn cameras. Youll see that the officers were dealing with some incooperative citizens at times. But at all times trying to locate the source of the gunfire as well as evacuate those citizens that were in the line of fire. I think the video will speak for itself. So if youd like to, ill try to narrate just a little bit as we go through, but carlos, if you could play that for me, please. That wall faces mandalay bay and they are hunkered down behind that wall after initial volley of shots. Get down go that way get out of here theres gunshots coming from over there, go that way, go that way [ gunshots ] at this point they are still trying to figure out where the rounds are coming from. [ gunshots ] stay down stay down stay down wheres it at . Coming out of a window. Coming out of a window. [ inaudible radio chatter ] a couple officers hunkered down next to the patrol vehicle on las vegas boulevard. One of our officers gets shot. Go back go back get back get back get back this video is obscured. You notice the officers were wearing yellow reflective vests. Thats what youre actually seeing. Everybody get down, get down, get down, get down [ gunshots ] very difficult to tell from that video, but the officer is actually standing over a woman. [ gunshots ] get down get down get down he said, i have a vest on. Where are you, where are you . Go, go. This way, this way, this way. Go, go, go, go. That way. That way. That way. So before i take some questions, i understand that the coroner is here now. Im sorry, i was looking right past you, john. This is john hudenburg, clark county coroner. Thank you, under sheriff. Again, id like to start by saying my condolences go out to all those involved in this incident and specifically the family and friends who have lost loved ones in this incident. I would like to provide you some information, some updated information what is happening at the Family Assistance Center at the convention center. Were fully operational all evening all through the night and tomorrow at noon well make a determination whether or not well be open 24 hours Going Forward but at minimum, we will be open from present time to 5 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Were still fully operational to answer any questions the families may have, friends of the families. I would also like to clarify, were not releasing property at the Family Assistance Center. That is as the sheriff mentioned earlier, that is going to be released theyre developing a plan currently to release that property in the future, and im certain that will be put out through one of these press conferences. Id like to also discuss some of the numbers that weve been dealing with over there. I had that question earlier. By multiple media outlets. Its estimated weve served well over 1,000 family members and friends there at the Family Assistance Center. Were providing all sorts of services to include Bereavement Services and our staff at the Clarke County Coroners Office has been meeting with every family that comes in there, and id like to again thank them. Theyre an Amazing Group of people, and theyve been doing an amazing job in serving these families. I think everybody except for the families would consider this a huge success at the Family Assistance Center, and rightfully so. I think the reason the families may not is because if theyre waiting one minute longer for us to provide information, thats too long. So they have been very patient. I appreciate that and i just want to send a message to them that we are doing everything we can to communicate with them and get them the information that they need. If they want to come down to the Family Assistance Center, were there to receive them and communicate with them. If they are not able to attend the Family Assistance Center, id like to provide you with a phone number previously published within the state of nevada, 211. Outside of the state of nevada thats 18665355654. We have call takers standing by to take missing persons reports. I believe thats tailored off quite a bit. To date we have received over 3,000 missing persons reports. And id like to clarify what that means so people dont misreport the intent of that number or the intent of me giving you that number. That by no means means that we have 3,000 people missing. We dont we believe that all 59 of the deceased are identified tentatively. Were working on positively identifying the rest of them. And we believe that will happen by the end of this evening. We estimate in between 9 00 and 10 00 p. M. Thats very normal for us to receive an excessive amount of missing persons reports following an incident like that. Again, by no means we have outstanding missing persons. We have a very detailed manifest and we believe that everybody involved in the incident from the decedents standpoint are accounted for and waiting to communicate that with their families. Im available to answer any questions that you may have. I have limited time so ill take a few. Go ahead. Did everybody who die, die of gunshot wounds . Excuse me . Everybody who died, did they die of gunshot wounds . Yes, the majority did. Im not at liberty to tell you whether or not all of them did die as a result of gunshot wounds, simply because i dont know at this point. How long until a list of names are released . Im working with the metropolitan Police Department to develop that list and will make that public. I would imagine that wont happen until at the earliest, tomorrow morning. The three victims mentioned earlier have not been identified. Is that because the families have not been able to come or another reason why . As i spoke earlier, we have tentatively identified them but were working on confirmation issues. And im confident they will all be identified. We believe we know who every single one of them is. Its a matter of confirming. We dont have the liberty to make mistakes. Weve got to get it right, as the under sheriff mentioned earlier, weve got to get this right. So we need your patience and were going to work through the night to get that right and im hopeful that well have all of those confirmed by tomorrow morning and the families notified. Yes, sir . You said the majority died of gunshot wounds, will we get the totals and everything and cause . Are we going to find some who did not die of gunshot wounds . I dont believe so, but i cant confirm that right now. Mr. Coroner, have you completed an autopsy on mr. Paddock . Im not going to speak to the details of the examinations at this point. Completed it . Excuse me . Again, im not going to speak to the details of the examinations at this point primarily out of respect to the families. I hope you can understand that. Yes . Did you have a question . Can you describe the process of getting victims back to their home states if they didnt live here . Well, thats quite a lengthy process. In a nutshell, the families of the decedents will make arrangements with local area mortuaries, and they are the folks that provide details and provide the transportation back to their home states. One last question, if you would. Can you estimate a percentage of how many victims were local and how many were not . I dont have that estimation but were putting that together and we should have that by the time our list is finalized and confirmed. [ inaudible question ] it does not. Excuse me . Could you re im not sure i understood that and i want to give you accurate information. Does the figure, 59 dead, include the shooter . No, no, we have 58 dead plus the shooter for a total of 59. When you release the list, will you going to post it online at the same time you announce it to us here . This is the last question. I dont know. But that will be announced through one of these press conferences probably later today or most likely tomorrow at some point. And thats all the questions im going to take. Thank you very much for your time can you clarify the 59 . I can clarify the 59. We have confirmed 59 dead in our office. Yes. 58 plus the shooter for a total of 59. And that is confirmed. Thank you. Thank you very much, under sheriff. Youre welcome, sir. [ indiscernible question ] i didnt call on you first, kid, but go ahead. Is there another death somewhere else . We were told previously 59 plus one. Yeah, but remember, we also told you that the numbers of dead and wounded will continue to fluctuate, so the answer that the coroner provided you is the most recent and relevant number that we have. Is there any indication he was planning Something Else a couple weeks beforehand . In your investigation, have you seen that . No, im not prepared to speak about that but that is part of our investigation. Under sheriff, with the knowledge that the mayor is in the philippines, knowing the current climate of the philippines, have you ruling out any connection to terrorism, anything like that . We havent ruled out anything in this investigation. Under sheriff what i can just be im not trying to be coy, right . I can confirm to you we have not ruled anything out. Right. I mentioned i can also confirm we have not ruled that in. Right. So we have a lot more questions than we have answers today. I know that because i understand that. Were very well aware of that. Im sorry, go ahead, sir. Can we get an update on the electronics that have been investigated . Ill give that to you when we have it. Its not a simple process. It takes time. The fbi is working on that for us. Let me finish before he asks. All right . Thank you. Go ahead. Do you have any information as to whether the shooter trained himself on firing these weapons . Did he visit any gun ranges . How did he train himself . The question is do we have information the suspect trained himself in firearms. Im aware of the online reporting, as well. We have not been able to confirm any of that information yet. Is there a theory on why the gunman stopped shooting . Did he see officers outside or is there a time frame . The investigation will reveal that. I believe personally the Security Guards approach to the room obviously took his attention away and he fired at the Security Guard. Then the Immediate Police response that followed on. Tell me about what youre hoping to learn from his family when investigators speak with heir, how will that investigation how will that interview help advance the investigation . Great question. I cant reveal that because i dont know yet. We got a lot of questions, i can tell you that. On the timeline, the s. W. A. T. Team entered around what time, and at what point did the shooter stop shooting can i give you the exact time s. W. A. T. Entered . I was hoping to provide that today. Ill provide that or the sheriff will provide that in the next briefing. But there was some there is a delay because hes not firing anymore. We treat that situation as a barricade at that point. At 11 00 p. M. , is that correct . I dont know what the time was. Im working on trying to verify all that information about when s. W. A. T. Actually made entry, via both Radio Communication and bodyworn communication. [ inaudible ] came in the door with Security Guard and s. W. A. T. Team, right . The s. W. A. T. Team is not your normal s. W. A. T. Team. It was made up of both s. W. A. T. Officers, patrol officers and a k9 unit. [ inaudible ] information that paddock may have checked into ogden in the days before he checked into mandalay bay. Can you confirm that . I cant confirm but we heard the same allegation. His girlfriend is in the philippines, has she expressed willingness to either a, return to the country, or b, answer questions when she does . The question is, is miss danly coming back to the country . Were aware of information but not prepared to release that at this point in the investigation. Two more. Back here. Can you confirm that he wired 100,000 to an account in her name . Mary lou danlys name in the philippines . The question is can we confirm that 100,000 was wired to the philippines. The answer is, no. We have financial subpoenas the fbi put out. Remains an active part of the investigation. We certainly want to know the answer to that question. Can you confirm what time the Security Officer was shot . That approached the door . You know, just moments prior to our initial officers responding up there so well add that to the questions that we can answer again tomorrow. With that im going to say this to you, i apologize. I forgot to introduce the special agent in charge of the Las Vegas Field Office, aaron rousse. Theyve been great partners throughout this investigation. As you know, weve been joined at the hip from the very beginning as well. Id like you to make sure to Pay Attention to the elected officials from across this great state and here locally. Congressman cuehen and general laxall, and chair steve sisilak. Theyve been instrumental in supporting our organization throughout this and we need it. Theres a lot more questions than there are answers, and we will provide those to you just as soon as we can. Thank you. All right. That was under sheriff kevin mcmayhill of the las vegas metropolitan Police Department. He confirmed a few things. 59 total dead including the shooter. 47 firearms recovered from three different locations. Two different houses in nevada in mess keys and verde, nevada, and one obviously from the hotel room. He talked about a Security Guard who he said was heroic, who was shot by the suspect as he approached the room that he was staying in at the mandalay bay hotel. He was able to identify which room it was for officers. The total time that elapsed between the beginning of the shooting and the end, nine to 11 minutes. Police receiving the first call at about 10 08 p. M. On sunday night. And it being over by 11 minutes later. The under sheriff was not able to confirm what time the s. W. A. T. Team arrived, he said there was some delay because by the time they arrived the shooting had actually stopped. One of the more dramatic parts of the conference tonight, the under sheriff played body camera footage that took place on the night where you could hear the incredible volley of gunshots and see police trying to clear people away as they responded to the shooting. You can see that footage there. Joining us is nbc news intelligence and National Security reporter ken delanian. Your big takeaways from this press conference . My biggest takeaway was the revolution the shooter had 12 bump fire stocks. These are devices that modify a semiautomatic weapon. And simulate machine gunfire. I have one to show you. It looks like the stock of a rifle. This would go on an ak47 and what it does is it harnesses the recoil of the rifle to rapidly depress the trigger, much faster than a human finger could ever squeeze a trigger. To the point where you heard on that body camera video, sounds like a machine gun. I havent heard fire like that since i was embedded with u. S. Forces in iraq. That sounded like a war zone. Thats what these devices do. As the atf official clearly said there, they are legal. That is i think a really important aspect of this whole situation. Because its becoming increasingly clear that technology and weaponry is one of the reasons so many people died here. This man assembled an arsenal of 47 guns. He had video cameras warning him of approaching officers. He was going to war, essentially. He had a firing position that was completely advantageous. The range was such that if he hadnt had these bump fire stocks, its not clear, experts tell me today, that he would have been able to hit as many people. Just firing single shots. But these allowed him to pour fire down on the crowd. And now, today, senator Dianne Feinstein has proposed banning this technology, and thats going to be a debate in washington Going Forward. Absolutely. As you pointed out, the atf says they are legal because as they simulate rapid firing, we the trigger makes it like automatic gunfire, it doesnt actually make them automatic. Ken delanian, we appreciate your time. Weve got more to get to. More ahead from las vegas and the mayor of san juan puerto rico will join us live hours after the president visited hurricaneravaged puerto rico. Stay with us. When you have a cold stuff happens. Members of congress reacted to the massacre in las vegas. Passing gun control reform is a yearslong struggle for democrats even after the horrible events in now town, connecticut in 2012. Democrats tried yet again to put gun control legislation on the agenda and republicans offered a mixed big of responses. Senator feinstein is taking a piece of the assault weapons ban that allows you to convert semiautomatic guns to automatic guns and abolishing it, its legislation that the vast majority of us in the Democratic Caucus support, maybe everybody. I think its particularly inappropriate to politicize an event like this. It just happened within the last day and a half. Its entirely premature to be discussing about legislative solutions, if any. Listen, the hunting culture is a big deal in my state. I dont know anybody that goes deer hunting that needs to retrofit a gun to fire hundreds of rounds a minute. Its to slaughter people. One of the concerns that i have is the ability to manipulate a semiautomatic rifle and turn it into a fully automatic rifle. I think thats one of the discussions were going to have Going Forward. And joining us from las vegas is the congresswoman that represents that part of the city where the shooting happened, congresswoman dena titus, and jim heinz in new york. Congresswoman, senator Mitch Mcconnell says now is not the time to discuss legislative solutions but Given Congress is primarily in the business of writing and passing legislation, that is pretty much the function of the congress, do you believe that it is time for congress to Start Talking about some of these issues, particularly the one that came up in this press conference tonight, the shooter had 12 of these bump fire stocks in his hotel room which allowed him to simulate automatic gunfire. Is that something that congress can and should address right now . Well, absolutely. Congressman sister laney from rhode island and i are coming with a bill to do that. Im glad to hear senator feinstein is going to approach it on the senate side. As for is it time to do it . They never want to do it. Youll recall after every incident, we have a minute of silence on the floor. Well, thats just not enough. We had a sitin. I sat with john lewis that said bring a bill to the floor. One thing thats interesting is they have backed off a couple of the bills that they were proposing to introduce this week. So they know thats not timely. They wanted to do away with silencers and allow reciprocity for concealed weapons. Now theyre not going to do that because they think maybe the optics arent so great. What do you make of because the other bill there was a bill on the floor supported by the son of the president of the United States to legalize silencers. There was apparently legislation that would have legalized copkiller armorpiercing bullets. Do you think that legislation is also now not going to go forward . I would like to think its gone for good. But i suspect they just want to wait until the news dies down and people forget about it and theyll try to come with it again. Were playing both offense and trying to get background check loopholes closed and trying to get those converters outlawed but were also playing defense. And congresswoman, we know that nevada is a state where people do enjoy guns. They enjoy hunting. Its a state where i would assume the Second Amendment is quite popular. Do you hear from constituents after this horrific incident that maybe people changed their minds some on whether or not there should be some sort of gun reform legislation . Well, youre right. This is still the wild west. A lot of people like to go out hunting. They like their guns for recreational purposes. But you remember in the last election, a Gun Initiative passed in nevada to close the loophole check for those sold at swap meets and things. Our attorney general has put a stop to it but the public sentiment was in favor of it. Weve gotten hundreds of calls saying, do something. Yes, we should make this political. Now is the time. So i dont back away from that one bit, even though we took a day to mourn and we continue to have hearts broken, we also have to take action. Congressman heinz, im going to turn to you on this. Ive seen posted several times on twitter and i think i associated myself with the comments. If we didnt do anything after newtown, and you represent the district in connecticut, when little kids were slaughtered at school, then maybe we just dont have the political will or maybe the nra is too much in control of congress to ever do anything. Do you agree with that . Lets be clear. Yes, when 20 babies are slaughtered in newtown, which is in the district next to mine, when one of our own, steve scalise, is nearly killed on a baseball diamond a couple of months ago, now when 59 people die led. What happens is they roll out, and by they, its not political will. This is a very deliberate, wellrehearsed series of things that the republicans, who are doing the work of the nra rollout. You heard Mitch Mcconnell say this is way, way too early. No, its not. When people flew an airplane into a building in new york, we didnt wait three days to figure out what went wrong. What our response should be. When americans die in weather events in houston or miami, we mobilize. Thats just one of the tricks. Stand by for this, along with well, background checks wouldnt have stopped this las vegas shooter. Right. Well, there is what happens is, you get discouraged over a period of time, you move on to other things. The immediacy of the violence goes away until of course two weeks from now when we see another one of these. Explain to those who are dumbfounded including people in the International Community who look at the United States and think this is rational country that would allow one person to accumulate an arsenal, 47 firearms in three different locations, to tote a dozen maybe suitcases full of firearms into a hotel. Nobody notices. Set up cameras in the hallway of his hotel room. Nobody pays any attention. And to have a dozen of these bump fire these bump stocks to make his firearms react like machine guns, tommy guns, essentially. What preview what would be the argument against regulating at least that part of it . What arguments would the nra lobbyists be making in the halls of congress . The argument they make is not an argument. They say if you dont allow silence, because stand by, well see legislation in the next four or five weeks to allow people to buy silencers more easily than they can today. Its not an argument. What they say is if you dont make everything available, eventually youre getting to a place where they will take away your guns. Thats where the insanity is. I think i speak for dena and myself. I support the Second Amendment. I think that americans, i know that americans should have the right to keep and bear arms. But like every other right, it should be subject to being balanced by the safety of other citizens. So universal background check, which enjoys 90 support amongst the american public. Things like banning weaponry and modifications of weaponry that turn what may be a hunting gun into a really an assault rifle, designed to kill lots of people. Theres dramatic support goes these things and yet they will not be brought before the house of representatives, that word representative being key. Theoretically we ought to be doing what our constituents want. Because too many of my colleagues worry if they dont have a perfect score for the nra, what that might mean back at home, so people die day in and day out. I cant believe the people would believe they would not be reelected for trying to stop people from buying copkiller armorpiercing bullets. In addition to managing a city on the verge of a humanitarian crisis, the mayor of hurricaneravaged san juan, puerto rico, found herself subjected to a barrage of insults from the president of the United States who used his twitter account over the weekend to complain she wasnt being complimentary enough of the federal response. But today donald trump was in her city, and mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz met him face to face. How are you . Its not about politics. Its about saving lives. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. Its unclear whether the president heard or really tried to listen to the mayor in that moment, she tweeted today her meeting with white house staff was productive. Quote, they really understood the disconnect between how things are supposed to happen and how they really happen. Hopefully, the newly open channels of communication with the white house staff will put in motion what is needed to accomplish our goal save lives. And joining us now is san juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz. Madam mayor, thank you very much for your time tonight, i really appreciate talking with you. Thank you for having me. The most important question, how is your city doing . How is the response progressing . Well, ever since last thursday, things started picking up a lot because of private donations. People have overcome with solidarity. And chicago, illinois, miami beach, los angeles, new york, boston, private organizations and nongovernmental organizations Like Operation blessing have just been bringing loads and loads of food and water. And i have to say that now having the fema supplies been brought directly into the municipality has helped a lot. So we have been able to use the fema supplies to help other municipalities that have not received anything. The town of comerio, the town of st. Lorenzo, were going to do the same with other towns. So these are places in the inner side of the island nation of puerto rico where no one has been able to pretty much get theyve been there to assess. Theyve been there to talk. Theyve been there to figure out what is going on. But the people keep just lacking water, lacking food, lacking medical attention. There are simple and basic things that we all know and need. But i really felt that the second part of the meetings today with the white house staff were conducive to just sort of bridging the gap between the disconnect of what they say is happening. By the way, the pentagon does not agree with their assessment. And what really is happening. And i think that disconnect is really that gap got closed a lot more by talking to five mayors that were there. And we were able to also propose solutions to some of the logistical problems and issues that have been brought up. In terms of san juan, the flooding that we had has receded mostly. We are using the ongs and our churches, faithbased organizations and the Community Leaders promoting that they start having Community Kitchens and cooking for 400, 500 people at a time. And we are now because of the private donations that weve been getting, mixed with some of the fema donations, we have been able to provide people with boxes for one week worth of food. It makes it a lot more efficient. And the tentacles of all these organizations, these grassroots organizations are a big help to the municipality. And it sounds like all of these additional sort of additions to the federal response have really been helpful. But im wondering what you make of the president s sort of response to you today. He assembled this sort of strange roundtable situation where we went around the room and had people praise the federal response. He did not call on you. There was this moment when the two of you interacted, and i think what you said to him and ill let you repeat what you said to him, that its not about politics. But he didnt even seem to respond to you or react to it. What did you make of that . Well, i said to him, its about saving lives, its not about politics. And he didnt respond. But this was a pr 17minute meeting. There was no exchange with anybody, with none of the mayors. And in fact, this terrible and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people, its really it does not embody the spirit of the american nation, you know. That is not the land of the free and the home of the brave that the beacon of democracy that people have learned to look up to, you know. Across the world. He was insulting to the people of puerto rico. He said Something Like puerto rico, you really have taken our budget out of whack because of all the money weve thrown here. He kind of minimized our suffering here by saying that katrina was a real disaster, sort of implying that this was not a real disaster, because not many people have died here. Well, you know what . Theyre dying. They dont have the medical resources. They cant get to their dialysis. Their oxygen tanks are starting not to work because they dont have generators. Hospitals are just collapsing because of the generator situation. The diesel doesnt get to where its supposed to get. A lot of people are being caged, especially the elderly. And the pictures there, the news have been witness to everything that we are saying. Mayors now are starting to talk a lot more about what they are encountering. So, you know, i said this morning that he really has a communication issue. Yeah. You know, hes sort of like miscommunicator in chief, really. You dont go to another place when people are in peril and are suffering and you just kind of hover around in a helicopter without having some kind words to say. This is common courtesy. But his staff, on the other hand, seemed to want to approach this a different way. One more quick question. Because it when you talk to other mayors in puerto rico, do you get the sense that they fear that if they dont that they have to praise donald trump in order to get the full aid and attention that they deserve . Yes. To those that are able to talk to. And the reason is simply one. Most of the people in puerto rico do not have any access to a phone. Yeah. Even if they have a phone in their pocket, it doesnt work. So this lack of interconnectivity is one of the main and primary reasons why things have not been able to picked up but by god, you go to timbuktu, you put in a satellite dish and you make communications happen. These are not logistical things that cannot be resolved. Right. We know theyre there. People shouldnt be waiting for somebody to write a forum to make it happen. San juan mayor carmin yulin cruz. Thank you so much for your time tonight. We really appreciate it. And be well. Thank you very much. The best to the people of puerto rico. Thank you. Well be right back. Youre looking at live pictures of a vigil tonight for the 58 People Killed by a gunman in a mass shooting in las vegas. Tonight we heard from the undersheriff of the las vegas metropolitan Police Department who talked about the 47 firearms that the gunman had in three different locations, the fact that he set up cameras in the hallway and in the peephole of his hotel room. The fact that he had 12 of these bump fire stocks that allowed him to spray that crowd of concertgoers with what appeared to be machine guntype gunfire. Its been a pretty heady night of listening to of learning what happened in that case and what we do not know. That now its time for the last word with lawrence odonnell. Lawrence is live in las vegas. Good evening, lawrence. Good evening, joy. Thank you. As joy said we are live again tonight in las vegas. We have new information about the victims and the massive amount of firepower that the shooter was able to get into that hotel suite. And in the last hour, Police Released video from Police Body Cameras taken as they responded to that shooting. There is a significant amount of bodyworn camera footage that were going through. Go, go, go, go this guy was geared up for war. We are aware of a device called a bump stock. That allow conventional assaultstyle rifles to be fired like machine guns
