Than people would think. Joined now by nbc news medical contributor, natalie azar and Hallie Jackson whos covering the Trump Campaign closely. Lets start with this timeline over the past 24 hours, if we can, because if i understand and correct me if im wrong, the Trump Campaign said theyd not release any information with regard to the physical on dr. Oz. Start the taping, what does he do . Releases the physical on dr. Oz and then find out a short time ago, this is all were getting. We saw that. Youre nailing it. Thats pretty much it. You go back to this time yesterday when a senior aide to the Trump Campaign were saying, yeah, the conversation is about well being and fitness. Flash forward a couple of hours and trump pulls the papers out of his jacket and to dr. Oz who was surprised by it. Thats what he told kate snow and believe it on the today show as well and see the information dr. Oz saw. Right now, hes the only one who has seen it and hes reading it. So were going to get those same numbers but apparently, that is going to be what the campaign will release today. Thats it . Thats it. Its not family medical history from our understanding and lets be clear, this is based on what we know from dr. Oz. Not the family medical history and not other history of trump. Its going to be the results of this single physical, which and doctor, im sure thats a snapshot in time and doesnt necessarily illustrate as much as we know from, for example, Hillary Clinton. Its less information than her but more information than what weve heard so far from trump. Remember, up until about 24 hours ago, all we had was four paragraphs from his long time doctor saying his health was astonishingly excellent. Dr. Oz and the republican nominee, here it is. Why not share your medical records . Why not . I have no problem in doing it. I have it right here. I mean, should i do it . I dont care. Should i do it . Its two letters. One are the report and other is from lenox hill hospital. These are the reports from all the tests just done last week. September 13th, 2016. Again, its from dr. Bornstein. First of all, thank you for sharing this. This is a pretty comprehensive. Can i read it to you quickly and ill try to quickly interpret it. Cholesterol, 63, 236 pounds. Cholesterol 169. Hdl, healthy cholesterol is 63. Ldl, 94. Good numbers. Triglis rides. Fat in your blood. Psa, the other earlier, 0. 15. Blood sugar 99. 116. Ive always been lucky with Blood Pressure. Ive always had very good Blood Pressure. Protein is also low. Liver, thyroid all normal. Colonoscopy. No polyps. In 2013, also low at 98. My goodness. Ekg on april 14th was normal. Normal echo cardiogram done two years ago and your testosterone is 441 which is actually good. Natalie again joining us now. What did we learn from that . What did we not learn from that . Just so everyone understands what yesterdays show was revealing to us. Dr. Oz went through something called review of systems which is traditionally used when you see a patient for the first time to see if theres anything unusual or out of the ordinary for the patients recently. It doesnt give me an indication of what his life history has been and example of that would be if you ask someone, do you have chest pain . And you could have a person who has a well established history of Heart Disease will say no because none at this moment because theyre treated for Heart Disease. I liked the fact that dr. Oz did a review of systems because it gives everybody an idea that currently, mr. Trump is feeling quite well but it doesnt, as hallie pointed out before, no insight into his true past medical history. What we learn and make an inference on the medication. He know hes on a staten and assume hes got elevated cholesterol. We got a lot of useful information. Laboratory values, a physical exam, Blood Pressure, height, weight, we have Cancer Screening results over the last couple of years. We have a stress test. Quite honestly, theres really nothing that i would say is still out there in the medical history universe that i would say we dont know about mr. Trump. I think the real issue at hand is the way the information was communicated to us rather than the content of it. The way the information and im not talking about the great reveal but just the medium itself. Im learning how to handle these questions now and what im going to say to you, craig, is that as an objective observer, i think you can draw your own conclusions about the scrutiny, perhaps, and the request for Peoples Health information. And that there appears to have been some disparity and a little bit of unevenness. Hillary clintons health. Weve got new information yesterday on that front but you talked to dr. Oz shortly after that interview. Did he feel like he had been in any way, shape or tomorrow used by the campaign . No, definitely not using that word, craig. He said to me and the today show again that he feels its a tv show about medicine. He extended an invitation for both Hillary Clinton and donald trump. Trump took him up on it and why not use this venue if people Pay Attention to me and got the show, why not do it this way . But i asked him about the moment at the beginning of the show that you just showed. The reveal where donald trump kind of, it looked like it was scripted. Like they had known exactly what was going to come down. Take a look at what he said to that. Weve seen the clipboard. He takes out his records and hands it to you. It looks scripted. Did you know he was going to do that . No. You didnt know he was going to come with records. I was hoping but we had gotten word he wasnt. I said, you should be transparent to get your physical records. I know you had a test last week and he hesitated and pulled out the papers and i was, you know, surprised. I looked at them and try to process it quickly and as a doctor, if it was my patient, theyre good for a man of his age. He keeps saying, i got what any other patient would bring me if they came into my office for a visit. This is the information they would bring along so he doesnt feel it was disingenuous and thinks he did a service by giving donald trump the platform. To point out to viewers and listeners, he didnt examine it. He took the information that was given. It was a series of routine questions to ask about his history. Whats the Trump Campaign saying about what we saw play out on dr. Oz . Why do it that way versus how Hillary Clinton did which is just put it out there to the public . I think theyre letting the moments we saw in this interview speak for themselves. I think it is, you look at donald trump and the style and the way he delivered information in the past. He likes productions. Thats fair to say. Thats how he wants to do it. Dr. Oz may have been surprised by the papers pulled out of the jacket pocket, somebody tucked them in before the show. He had them ready to go and reveal so clearly trump himself if not his campaign wanted this information to be out there. Interestingly, his Campaign Manager had said just a couple of hours before the taping it was going to be a more general conversation about fitness. Trump clearly wanted something more out there. We do expect to get our own look at that today but as dr. Azar said, it underscores how the campaign has been putting information out of the thethere have more information about his health than 48 hours ago. And also the clinton campaign. What did we learn . We got just a really much more detailed history of whats happened in the last month. What happened in her rest of the medical history has always been publicly available since at least the letter from july of 2015 from her doctor. So what we really got was a better picture, quite honestly, of how sick she was this month. She had a upper respiratory tract infection treated with antibiotics and subsequent ly pneumonia. What about the tube in her ear . Nothing. Confirming there was no structural reason for it but i think we all agree in our medical unit that thats really a nonissue. Its not contributory in terms of the discussion of president ial fitness in terms of health. No snippet here from the dr. Oz show. This is donald trump talking about his tell pralmperament. What kind of temperament is required for person . Unbelievable strong and smart temperament and i think its my greatest asset. I think temperament is my single greatest asset. Why do so many people question it . Madison avenue went to Hillary Clinton and they said, and when i say madison, im talking about the advertising people, the people that make up the ads, they put 15 things, oh, temperament, lets go after temperament. The people that know me, i win. I know how to win. You cant win unless you have a great temperament. Lets talk about Something Else that came up in that exchange. Donald trumps weight. Its a bit of an issue from a medical standpoint. Is that fair to say . I dont want to put words in anyones mouth but from a medical standpoint. Craig, the issue that i sort of touched on last night on rachels show is, you know, how are we, by what measure are we using or measure are we using to actually assess the two individuals health . And i dont want to get into comparisons because i feel like that gets into dangerous territory. Yeah, hes a little bit heavier than he should be. By the definition that you guys use, is he overweight . Obese . So, we cant answer that because theres a discrepancy in the exact weight we got from a couple of people and also, theres a huge controversy about the bmi measurement anyway. That gets us into a territory we might not want to get into. He has some risk factors for Heart Disease. His age. Hes male. Elevated cholesterol. He doesnt exercise. He doesnt appear to eat that healthy and slightly overweight. Okay. That doesnt disqualify him for running for president. Everybody at a certain age will acquire certain risk factors. Its just a natural part of aging. And i would agree with dr. Oz that nothing about what we learned yesterday makes him unfit to be president , but like everybody, hes got places to improve upon. Did dr. Oz give you the impression he thought the republican nominee was completely forthcoming with him . He did. He thought he was forthcoming enough. He thought he gave him all the information needed to make the assessment that hes fit to be president. Would be remissed if i didnt ask you from a medical standpoint. Whos more fit . You did not just ask me that. Youre our nbc medical doctor. And youre looking at the information presented, is there one that would be more qualified from a health standpoint . Taking all objective information that we have and i spent the last two or three hours doing this as well as consulting with cardiologists who are my colleagues, and we come down on the side that in all likelihood, she might be a little healthier than him. And thats using what we have objectively. And i want to say that really strongly. None of us have examined them or access to the most intimate details of their health and i would also argue that what happened this Campaign Season will likely require us from now on to have a standardized protocol for evaluating the health of our candidates because all this that has transpired while it began, we got the information we needed, i cant even think of the word. Just unusual. You could probably use that to describe every aspect of this campaign so far. Perhaps so. Dr. Natalie, thank you for that perspective. Didnt mean to put you on the spot. More of dr. Ozs interview with donald trump on his health and Hillary Clinton back on the campaign trail today. Not a moment too soon. New national and battleground polls showing trump and clinton in a flat out dead heat. A look at where its tightest. Glad forceflex. Extra strong to avoid rips and tears. Be happy, its glad. Together, were building a better california. Hillary clinton set to return to the campaign trail in just a few hours. She took three days off to recover from pneumonia after that near collapse on sunday. Im very touched by the concern thats been set forth about my health. Im really glad that i did finally follow my Doctors Orders and take some days to rest instead of just trying to keep powering through, which i think is a common experience for people. Lets get to westchester airport in white plains, new york, where Andrea Mitchell is awaiting secretary clintons departure there. A good morning to you. Are we expecting to hear from Hillary Clinton before she takes off from North Carolina . Reporter you never know. Its not scheduled, lets put it that way but we hope to talk to her sometime today if not now on the plane as we fly to North Carolina. Shes giving a speech there about children, child care, womens issues, maternal health. Family. This is a reboot for the campaign. She had a couple of days to work on it because she was supposed to have an economic speech or tuesday, rather, and yesterday, be in las vegas. The former president , bill clinton, her husband, pinchhitting for her there and shes missed the whole west coast swing, and i though itkno noisy airport but shes focusing on these issues as the polls narrowed again. T the New York Times has a virtual tie and a lot more of Hillary Clinton in the coming days. Shes going to be here today and then tonight, shell be in washington, dc and then tomorrow, an event with the africanamerican womens Leadership Conference in washington. A lot more coming up in the coming days. Congressional black caucus in dc and next week, shes going to not only be going to battleground states during the day during the morning but coming back to new york for the convening of the u. N. General assembly. Those annual meetings. Of course, she headlines those as the secretary of state and the president coming to his annual speech and then ukraines lead leader boro schennkov. Perhaps the most significant victim of russian aggression in the last couple of years. Our own Andrea Mitchell on the tarmac there ahead of Hillary Clintons arrival and then departure from North Carolina as she returns to the campaign trail. Thank you so much, andrea, again, clintons return to the trail coming as theres new polls andrea just mentioned. Donald trump cutting into her lead and in some cases, surging ahead of the secretary of state. Former secretary of state. Nbc news senior Political Editor mark murray joining me for a closer look at these numbers. A segment we like to call mark the map. I love it. And craig, we have a plethora of polls to go through. Fresh out this morning as andrea was talking about, theres this New York Times cbs poll with Hillary Clinton 2 points over donald trump in a head to head matchup of likely voters and in a fourway matchup, the race is exactly tied. And then we look at the quinnipiac poll that came out yesterday afternoon. Hillary clinton has a 5 point lead there and it has a big change since august where donald trump has gained ground in this national poll. Now, also, you end up looking in the same quinnipiac poll and its a twoway race with gary johnson and jill stooeein. These are more of a drag on Hillary Clinton than donald trump. We spend a lot of time talking about National Polls here for obvious reasons but how much do National Polls really matter in the march to 270 . I think the march of 270, the state polls matter more. Usually the national conform with the state polls because you could imagine the battle grounds of ohio and florida being smack dab in the middle of where the National Polls are but let he walk you through these polls. Cnn had a poll in ohio and donald trump ahead of likely voters and ditto in florida and then there was a monmouth poll with donald trump ahead very slightly in nevada. All of these still are close races but to me, what strikes out with these polls you discussed, all been taken during or after the news about Hillary Clintons health. Shes been off the campaign trail. To me, the question is is there a onetime blip because shes been out of the news and this has been a bad news environment for her for more fundamental thats going on and going to wait for more polls now that shes back on the campaign trail and two, it sets up that important debate on september 26 at hofstra university. Mark murray, see you there. Donald trump returning to battleground. Tit for tat with pastor faith green and interrupted donald trump in flint, michigan, yesterday. Hillary failed on the economy. Just like shes failed on foreign policy. Everything she touched didnt work out. Nothing. And now Hillary Clinton mr. Trump, i invited you here to thank us, not give a political speech. That happened. And less than 24 hours later, criticizing the pastor on fox news calling her, quote, nervous. She got up to introduce me. She was so nervous. She was shaking and i said, wow, this is sort of strange and then she came up. So she had that in mind. Theres no question about it. An interview on fox. Insisted the audience wanted him to continue speaking but according to an npr reporter in the room, thats not true. According to the reporter, several audience members began to heckle trump asking pointed questions about whether he racially discriminated against black tenants as a landlord. Why do you think you have the stamina for the job . Just about the same age as ronald reagan. And hillarys a year behind me. That was donald trump just a few moments ago from the dr. Oz show and why hes fit for the job. Hell be in New Hampshire today, a state he won in the primary but the general election there, much closer. Meanwhile, republican nominee not backing away from his outreach plan to africanamericans by continuing to ask them, what do you have to lose . This is what he told the detroit pastor when he visited a black church earlier this month. Take a listen. I would say, what do i have to lose . What does anybody have to lose . You have massive crime, recordsetting crime. All of these problems. You have poverty thats horrible. You have bad education in the inner cities. You have everything is bad. Everything is bad. And i say to people though, what do you have to lose . Ill fix it. Im going to make it better. Thats actually a statement of hope. But honestly, you look at some of these statistics and it cant get worse. You can go to wartorn countries and its safer to be there. You can go to afghanistan and its safer than being some of our cities. And i really do, i mean, some people said, oh, maybe thats not nice to say but i mean it. Its not going to get worse. With me from atlanta, trump supporter, part of the national Diversity Coalition for donald trump. Thank you for coming on with me, sir. Thank you, craig, for having me. What about the argument of what do you have to lose should appeal to people who look like me and you and by that, i mean, the reality is the Unemployment Rate in this country among black people specifically is around 4 Percentage Points than when president obama took office, save chicago and one or two other cities in this country. Crime rates are actually down. Why does he continue to Say Something that he knows not to be true and how can you continue to defend it . Well, craig. Quite frankly, the democrats ruled in a lot of these particular cities for 50, 60, 70, 80 years. And places like detroit, even some parts of atlanta down here and parts of texas and los angeles, new york, theres a lot of areas that have been respectfully under democratic rule. So, you know, its not hard to just say, youve had this going on for so many years. Give us a shot. Give the Trump Administration a chance to come in and bring other ideas as well as Charter Schools. Especially in the africanamerican schools where theres so much regulations going on where, you know, its very difficult. Case in point. I just want to bring something here in georgia. For example, the biggest thing he implemented was Charter School for inner cities and got 10 plus percent of the africanamerican vote and rising. So its not a bad deal to say, hey, guys. Youve had this for so long. Give us a chance. I think a lot of folks dont have an issue with the ask but the way its being asked. What do you have to lose . And frankly, i dont know where you live, but this idea that, you know, the majority of black people in this country all live in violent communities and have to worry about, thats not the case and he doesnt spend a fair amount of time talking about those black communities either. Well, i think respectfully, i think if youre hurting and thats going on with you in your community, for example, i actually work in ministry in a lot of inner cities here in atlanta and i have a pulse to the Mental Health conditions and the homeless we deal with. We have one of the most multicultural churches. But mr. Trump is close to the Faithbased Community and dear to his heart about the Human Resources that goes on in the communities. So i think weve got to talk about this more. Weve got to get this elephant in the room that no one is talking very strong and directly to get this dialogue and conversation going. I want to play a bit of what donald trump said last night in ohio, take a listen. I dont know, folksment you think hillary would be able to stand up here for an hour and do this . I dont know. I dont know. I dont think so. Why . Why . Im sorry. Craig . Why do that . At the end of the day, its not uncommon, john mccain went through it, reagan went through it in terms of health, president obama being a smoker, them worried about the situation of him being a smoker. This is not uncommon for candidates to talk about whether they can do the job or whatever. Interestingly, earlier in the segment before, i notice when you were reading, dr. Oz was reading mr. Trumps, you know, physical report, i actually had one two weeks ago, identical in weight. Im 50. Trump is 70 and our numbers are almost identical and i work out four to five times a week. That in itself tells you the physical fit that mr. Trump is in. His ability to have the stamina and a 70yearold man to do the job as president of the United States. Always enjoy having you on, sir. Thank you for having me, craig. Two candidates. Two very different methods of releasing medical information. Which one passes the president ial fitness test . More of Donald Trumps sitdown with dr. Oz coming up. When you look into the mirror, how old does a person youre looking at . What do you see . I would say i see a person thats 35 years old. I mean, i feel the same. Tom brady is a friend of mine. Great quarterback. Hes a phenomenal guy. Great athlete and im with him and i feel the same age as him. Its crazy. When i was diagnosed with pneumococcal pneumonia, it was huge for everybody. She just started to decline rapidly. I was rushed to the hospital. My symptoms were devastating. The doctor said, pam if youd waited two more days, you wouldve died. Pneumococcal pneumonia almost took me from them. If i had known that a vaccine could have helped prevent this, i would have asked my doctor about it. Lets just get a sandwich or something. Or something . You dont just graduate from medical school, or something. And we dont just pull smoked chicken, bake fresh foccacia and handslice avocado. Theres nothing or something about it. Is it a professor who never stops being a student . Is it a caregiver determined to take care of her own . Or is it a lifetime of work that blazes the path to your passions . Your personal success takes a Financial Partner who values it as much as you do. Learn more at tiaa. Org the studio just got this letter in. And again, this is essentially the same thing that we saw. It appears this is the same thing we saw revealed on dr. Oz yesterday. Thats what it looks like. Anything jump out at you based on this letter from dr. Harold bornstein, under his care since 1980. For the most part, pretty standard. A very short letter but a standard letter. We like to have more information. Usually, the two page letter is what we typically get. More detail of past medical history and detailed family history. In his case, the only thing that jumps out is the calcium score is 98 which for a 70yearold is not abnormal, just making sure if theres anything with cardiac issues. Beyond that though, it looks like were getting basic lab tests, a snapshot in one day of his life. Ekg tests that are a few years old. But the only thing that stands out looking at this letter is that calcium score that might be a little high and the weight people are talking about. Hes a bmi of 29. 5. Thats aver weigoverweight and. He even acknowledged hes overweight and needs to lose some weight. A low dose of aspirin. Not terribly unusual for someone whos 70 years old. But if were talking about lowering your lipids and then this calcium, does that tell us anything else . Can we read anything into that . I think the only thing is that, one, hes taking measures to protect his heart but two, theres some issues, could there be a cardiac issue and thats something that might need to be addressed. And a calcium score not as low as zero. Its 98, which isnt abnormal but a little up there. One of the things he did get an echo cardiogram. His risk for heart attack is something to focus on. Katie, the campaign saying anything else besides what we have here in this letter . Have they said anything about some sort of cardiovascular stuff . No. Theyre not saying anything. I expect at this point this to be the extent of the medical information that we are going to get from donald trump for this Campaign Season. Again, its not as much as most recent president ial candidates have given. But they feel like they dont have to give anymore of this and frankly, craig, been bucking traditions on a number of issues but tax returns. A lot of transparency issues when it comes to the Trump Campaign. Theres not a lot of information out there about his business dealings, exactly how hes tied to businesses overseas or to other foreign governments. We dont know that because we havent seen his tax returns. So this is just one of many things that were only getting a very superficial view of. So far though, this is not a problem for donald trump among his voters. They dont feel like they need more information on him. He makes very big promises on the campaign stage. Talks about how hes going to shake things up in washington. How hes going to get rid of waste in a number of areas. Be a change advocate, an outsider. Thats the only thing that most of his supporters seem to care about. In terms of medical records, i would note that most of audience members when they walked away from the dr. Oz despite the fact there wasnt a wealth of information there whatsoever. They came away feeling that donald trump was healthy despite his appearance and thats what the Campaign People are working for them so they dont have a lot of incentive to release more information. If donald trump gets elected, he would be the oldest person elected in american political history. Hillary clinton, 68 years old. So obviously, there is going to be some, perhaps, more scrutiny given to these two candidates given their age. Have we spent too much time on this . I think we have to get to a certain point where we say, okay. Enough is enough. We have the information we need. We can go on to other issues because from a medical perspective, i think what most voters want, are they going to make it through the presidency, four or eight years . Are they able to do it in a physical and mental ability or capacity where they function normally or well . I think we have information from Hillary Clinton, certainly more information. We have some information from donald trump. Again, im starting to get to the point where we are nitpi nitpicki nitpicking. More cardiac history and issues. Is there any cardiac issue at all . His Mental Health was never addressed. With Hillary Clinton, hers was excellent and doctors gave us more information. We get to the point where we are getting down in the weeds a bit with medical information. Based on what youve seen and heard from both candidates, would you say both of them from a physical standpoint would likely survive four years in the white house if not eight . I do think they both would and one of the things we need to focus on. Katy tur, thank you so much for calling from this side that room. Always appreciate your hard work. Dr. Torres, thanks again. Good to have you on board here. Taxes. Truth in consequences. Donald Trumps Campaign facing renewed criticism for as katy tur put it, a lack of transparency. Donald trump here talking to dr. Oz this morning about his fitness as the physical and Mental Health of both president ial candidates remains under the microscope. Im joined now from capitol hill by South Carolina congressman mark sanford. Good to see you. Thanks for dropping by. Pleasure. Lets start with the news of the day. How satisfied are you with the medical reports that we have now seen from both candidates . Id say its crazy on a number of different levels. The idea of them having good Mental Health and wanting to become president dont go together. I mean, its just a torture trail. Youve got to lay everything out there. Have folks poke at you and then reward after eight years figuratively speaking. The physical, its gotten to the point of the absurd. Churchill was a great leader but a fairly obese guy. People are living longer than they used to. It would make sense that they were dying off at the age of 46 and 50 at the beginning of the republic. I think its overdone and people are ready to move on. You mentioned churchill. I would say my favorite president , the guy who led the United States through a depression and world war and did it from a wheelchair. Let us move on. But lets move on the theme of transparency. Donald trump should release his tax returns. Whenever you run for public office, i was there in South Carolina when you did it. Both times ran for governor, you released your tax returns. Is there something that you and your republican colleagues talk about there in the Lower Chamber . When you get together, can you believe that a guy is running for president who hasnt done this . No. I wouldnt say refusal on a conversation. People moved on from an elected standpoint, i think its a mistake to do so. I wrote that oped because you pointed out, i had direct experience. I released mine a couple of times. I likened it to a colonoscopy. Its not a lot of fun. But its part of the transparency that i think is important in upholding our republic. If its discontinued, i had basically a 50 year tradition of president ial nominees doing this, at the president ial level, it will not only impact your future nominees but frankly a whole host of down ballot candidates like governors that i think would be a real mistake in terms of the transparency the people would like to see. I said what i said but people have, to a great degree, moved on because trump said, im not doing it, im moving on. I know youre not a fan of making a lot of laws but do you think perhaps we should look at legislation that would require, that would compel folks who wanted to become president to release tax returns, comprehensive tax returns . I do. And a bill to that effect. A democratic bill. I think im probably the only republican thats gone on to that bill or a handful thats done so but i think its important to uphold this tradition and if its broken, lets enact a law that would force people to do so. Would you vote for him if he didnt make the returns public . I support the nominee at this point. Its a wobbly point for me, but for me, the big driver is the Supreme Court decision, whapt happens on that front. Budget committee, youre on it. Are we getting something beyond the continuing resolution here before this Government Shutdown could happen in 18, 19 days . Yeah. One, youre not going to see a Government Shutdown. Two, youll see a continued resolution. Its shortterm. I think the overwhelming majority of folks in the conference have said shortterm. Its not where id be. I think youll end up with a spending fest, if you want to call it that in a lame duck session with a lame duck congress. Mark sanford, always good to see you. Thank you. As well. Thank you. Heres something you do not see every day. A giant moon shaped balloon on the loose. This is the result of some typhoon force winds crews in china trying to move the massive balloon.
