Initially, they were saying shell be back out on the trail in the next couple of days but that is up for discussion and that is going to depend on how shes feeling, how well she is doing. What we do know secretary clinton and former president bill clinton has been in a bit of damage control mode. They both hit the air waves yesterday to turn the page on whats been a rocky couple of days. Take a look at what they both had to say about secretary clintons past medical history. I should have gotten some rest sooner. I probably would have been better off if i just pulled down my schedule on friday, but like a lot of peeople, i thought i could just power through it and it didnt work so well. She had two and a half hard days before the day when she got dizzy but i think shes fine now. The doctor seems to think so. Reporter so that is the message that theyre putting out today. A show of strength that comes as you pointed out, craig, as those polls are getting tighter. Take a look at the latest nbc News Survey Monkey online poll that secretary clinton still has the lead but leading by 4 points. Thats down from 6 points which she led by last week. 48 to 44 . The race gets closer in a fourway matchup. In terms of the strategy today, of course, her surrogates are out on the trail. Bill clinton is going to be out on the west coast campaigning for her. President obama in philadelphia. Ive been talking to a wide range of democrats. Some are concerned but not hitting the panic button yet, craig. The reason why . They say, look, its september. Its not october. And you still have the debate. They say the key here is that secretary clinton gets better and has a really strong debate performance and they think if that happens, she could turn this rocky period around. Craig . Reporter this is the first on behalf of Hillary Clinton for president obama. We got a taste of what it was like to remember president obama on the campaign trail when he first appeared with her in charlotte. Pretty good reviews and to a certain extent, it was hard for people not to compare his natural campaign skills to Hillary Clintons which she has been out there saying, are not quite as natural, but president obama also comes to this with an Approval Rating thats above 50 . Hes currently at 54 Approval Rating with the American Public which hasnt always been the case, of course, for a sitting president. President bush at the end of his second term had a 30 Approval Rating and of course, you remember that led to president obamas overwhelming victory in the general election in 2008. So regardless of what obama says here today, we are outside the philadelphia art museum, its a Beautiful Day in philadelphia. He comes to the table with some builtin popularity. And of course, dont forget what philadelphia itself means for democrats in this state. We talk about whether pennsylvania is still fools gold for republicans. Democrats have won consistently here in recent elections but president obama being here is all about africanamerican turnout in particular. The population here very, very important for democrats in the state, craig. Lets talk about the trump event tonight as well. What can you tell us about that one . Not far from where i grew up on the upper main line of pennsylvania. Thats all about a Different Group of voters. Thats suburban philadelphia suburbs and its white women who typically have been swing voters. They are people who donald trump has seen abandon him in polls over the summer and thats who hes working hard to try to win back over. Weve seen him try to make new appeals to africanamerican communities, for example, hispanic communities. A lot of people i talked to with republicans say those appeals are actually going after suburban women to make sure they feel comfortable voting for trump. He and ivanka trump are outlining the details of his child care policy, again, kind of underscoring the Important Group of people there for him. Of course, if donald trump is going to have any hope of winning pennsylvania, hes going to need voters like that in addition to the White Working Class voters. Ozs show on thursday. Theyre supposed to take this segment tomorrow and how specific they get, we just dont know. We assume this is going to be a little more specific than Donald Trumps doctor in that famous 5 minute note that said if hes elected president , hell be the healthiest person ever elected president. Theyll find out if they get specific with lab results, for example. Blood pressure, weight, things doctors give increasing weight from healthy town healthy. Well have to wait and see. I mean, theyre meeting tomorrow, apparently, to take the segment but well have to wait and see if he has forwarded medical results to him and just arent sure. What more do we know about this altercation we were showing off the top here . This altercation that happened at a rally in North Carolina. Whats the campaign saying about that . Reporter well, we havent heard anything officially from the campaign about what went down. It appears donald trump as he was giving the speech last night was unaware that this scuffle was going on in the arena. If you look at the video, you see the gentleman on the left, its appearing hes a donald trump supporter and maybe the guy on the right isnt a donald trump supporter. These men are jawing at one another and then lunges at the guy on the right. Cant tell whether he hit him but clearly balled up into a fist and then an Event Organizer got up between the two guys and escorted the two guys. One who was lunged at escorted out and grabbed the head of the second person as they were escorting and nbc news has asked the police in nashville, North Carolina, about why the man who lunged at the other guy was also not escorted from the arena. He was allowed to stay there but no response from the police and not heard from the campaign about that dustup last night. Incidentally, it was happening while donald trump was talking about Hillary Clinton and those deplorables line from over the weekend, craig. Ron mott in iowa. Back to the Nations Capital where we expect to hear from mike pence and House Speaker paul ryan at rnc headquarters any hoemoment now. Meeting with republican leadership. Reporter we were just on the outskirts of capitol hill at the Republican NationalCommittee Headquarters and the room is packed with my fellow reporters and speaker ryan and governor mike pence. Just wrapped up the meeting with the Republican House conference and they can walk in behind us at any time. This is a chance to have a bit of a homecoming to have a place he served for a dozen years and talk to the very up to date issues that are on the campaign trail. There are republicans who are pleased to see a somewhat tightening in the polls and around about something and the debate about the deplorables. What it means, what it shouldnt mean . Who should embrace the term and who should not . All of that playing out here. There are district where is specific House Republicans have concerns about how well the ticket is doing in their district, how it might affect their own races. This isnt just about the party. Its about individual members of congress who have their own elections coming up in just eight weeks so we expect to have a chance to talk about the news of the day. This is our weekly online tracking poll we take every single week and the new number we end up having right now is that Hillary Clinton has a 4 point lead over donald trump. Last week, it was 6 points. Now its 4 points. But it puts an important perspective on the 4 point lead. That was president Barack Obamas margin over mitt romney in 2012 so if this is the final margin, and of course, we have a ways to go, but that would probably end up leading to a decisive Electoral College victory for Hillary Clinton, so keep that in mind but with the fourway matchup, its tighter with Hillary Clinton just having a 2 point lead over donald trump. And one of the reasons why this is closer, well, you end up having independents that are close. Hillary clinton is up 38 to 36 among selfidentified independents and then the Favorable Unfavorable scores of the candidate and almost mirror images, both are very unpopular and in most polls, Hillary Clinton slightly maybe a little more popular than donald trump here. They are almost even. Those are the results from the online tracking poll. I want to ask you that, something a lot of folks have been talking about. The idea that donald trump with voters may somehow be underrepresented in the polling. Something the Campaign Manager calls undercovered trump voters who wont admit to a pollster theyre voting for him. How real is that . Its one of the reasons we have so many different polls. We have our nbc wall street Journal National poll that has live interviewers talking to people on their land lines and cell. Same thing for our state meris poll but the way you get it is on their computers and i think unlikely to hide something if they want to online than maybe if youre speaking to someone. You could sense in those states whether its a swing state or not that there is incredible momentum behind the trump pence ticket and its growing. I personally thanked mike for what they did when donald trump and mike pence came down to south louisiana a few weeks ago and while people were at their lowest point gutting houses after this tragic flood we experienced, you could see, not only how much they lifted people up at an incredibly low time but it gave people spirit to know somebody really cared, the fact they showed up, went to churches and gave out relief supplies to people. Thats the kind of people they are when you look at the momentum behind the trump pence ticket. It shows you people are really responding to their message of making America Great again and as we talk about our message of the better way, the agenda that weve pushed as House Republicans to show how you can get the country back on track and create jobs and rebuild this middle class and how you can strengthen a military thats been depleted. It goes hand in hand with the message that donald trump and mike pence has been delivering all around the country. Its why youve got such great enthusiasm and why were going to win this election and be able to finally start turning this country around, again, it was great to see mike before the conference. Our members are excited but more importantly, you see people all around the country excited about the optimism that their ticket, the trump pence ticket is giving to making America Great again. Well, it was a highlight of this year, actually, to have mike pence here today addressing our conference and we are very proud to have him on the ticket. She said that, at the time, half of the people supporting donald trump and i were irredeemable, were not erican and frankly, ive never heard a major Party Candidate in the United States speak about the American People with such contempt. I mean, i am out on the campaign trail every day. I am campaigning with donald trump and for donald trump. And what Hillary Clinton apparently doesnt know is that the people supporting this campaign are hard working americans who come out to our rallies, come out to our town halls, stop us in diners, who visit with us at meetings, at factories, theyre people that work with their hands. Theyre people that run businesses. Theyre veterans, members of the armed forces. Theyre Law Enforcement officers, moms, dads, and farmers. For Hillary Clinton to express such disdain for millions of americans, i think is one more reason that disqualifies her to serve in the highest office in the land. Anyone who has that low an opinion of the American People should never serve as president of the United States of america. As i said this weekend, ill say again, that donald Trump Supporters are not a basket of anything. They are americans and they deserve the respect of the democrat nominee for president of the United States. And as he said this weekend and we believe from our heart, even those who do not support us, even those who are critical of us or have strongly different views have our respect because they are americans and we respect their right to their views and it would be the highest honor of our life to serve them. Now, with regard to your question, i tell you. I was asked yesterday once again, a question that i continue to, for all the world, i have no idea why this man keeps coming up. Donald trump and i have denounced david duke repeatedly. We have said we do not want his support and we do not want the support of people who think like him. And yesterday, i was asked a question about that and i repeated that again. And the simple fact is that i am not in the namecalling business. My colleagues in the house of representatives know that i believe that civility is essential in a vibrant democracy and its never been my practice. But im also not going to validate the language that Hillary Clinton used to describe the American People. I mean, look, millions of americans know, and frankly, you all know, Hillary Clinton wasnt talking about that bad man. She was talking about people all across this country who are coming out in record numbers to stand by donald trump and to stand with him in his vision to make America Great again. Well call on her again to apologize and retract her comments. The only thing she said so far is that she was wrong about the math, i guess, and shes sorry she said half. The truth of the matter is her remarks were deeply insulting to sincere people all across this country who know we can do better, who know we can be stronger and we call on Hillary Clinton and her campaign once again to fully retract those offensive statements and apologize to the American People as she should. Are you concerned that theres something about the trump pence candidacy in these political times and the rhetoric used that draws them to you . Look, we live in a free country. And people of ill motives can associate themselves with polics. I would draw no more conclusion of that mans expressions of support than i would the fact the father of a terrorist who killed 49 americans was seen at a Hillary Clinton rally cheering her on and said he was there because she was good on national security. Look, folks, there are two people on the ballot here. Hillary clinton and donald trump. One of them going to be president of the United States of america. And i would submit to you, this is all a distraction. I get it. I understand why Hillary Clinton and her Campaign Want to change the subject after that speech on friday night. I mean, we all have recognized, you and the media recognized this was a catastrophic insult to the American People, and its so important that people around the country know this was a prepared speech. This is not the first time she called millions of americans a basket of deplorables. And as i said, anyone thats got that low an opinion of the American People should never serve in the highest office in the land. We have a great relationship with the ncaa, and donald trump and i simply believe that these decisions are best made at the state level, by the people, and where disputes arise they should be resolved in the courts. I think what was so inspiring to me to be at the republican Conference Today and the meeting i had this morning with the speaker is how much consistency there is between Donald Trumps vision to rebuild our military, revive the american economy, uphold the rule of law, and the agenda that House Republicans have put forward in the better way. I really do believe we have an h historic opportunity here led by the house of representatives with Speaker Paul Ryan with the energy and vision of a President Donald Trump and a reelected Republican Senate to turn this country around and to turn it around very quickly. I mean, i said to the Conference Today, this is the most dramatic choice in an election in my lifetime. I mean, this is not a choice between one candidate who will grow america this much and another candidate who will grow america this much. This is a choice of whether we continue to go downhill to a weaker america at home and abroad, whether we continue to walk away from the constitutional liberties enshrined by our supreme court, the highest standards of integrity of the highest office in the land or whether we plant oufeet or start to march back uphill to greater strength and prosperity. Reporter the Campaign Just moments ago releasing that secretary clinton is scheduled to appear at the black womens suppose y symposium in washington, dc and expected to address the folks. She did have something scheduled for thursday night, no word yet if shes going to make that appearance. So, again, the campaign putting out this official release which would suggest thats when shes going to return to the campaign trail but of course, she is dealing with this health issue so, of course, caveat that with the caution that if shes not feeling well, that could always change. We heard bill clinton last night talking to charlie rose and really stressing she is eager to get out on the campaign trail and of course, this all came about and diagnosed on friday but wanted to power through her very busy schedule and thats something that backfired. The doctor saying she needed to scale back her schedule. She is resting. Campaign Officials Say she continues to feel better every day and at this point, it appears as though well see her back out on the campaign trail on friday, craig. Thats true to his character but leaves a crack in the door of people wondering, has he done enough or been clear enough . And talked about those who have hateful views can be drawn to politics and thats not the responsibility of the politicians. He was more trying to use this time to encourage Hillary Clinton to apologize for those statements. Thats a Strong Political argument for the trump pence team. Clearly, theyve decided as a campaign to push very harded o shining a light on her view of voters, a Broader Group of voters who have been supporting donald trump and told by sources in the room with governor pence when speaking with House Republicans that he has been praying for Hillary Clinton with respect to her recent Health Issues and he is someone who is known around capitol hill as being a person of faith so that also is very typical for mike pence but acknowledging health concerns.
