What did that say . Thats right. We had until about less than an hour ago now a series of tweets from nick merrill. Now shes saying she regrets her characterization. The statement says, quote, last night i was grossly generalistic. And thats never a good idea. I regret saying half. That was wrong. Lets be clear whats really deplorable is donald trump hired a major advocate for the so callcall ed alright movement and david duke see him as a champion to their values. The they want to have another conversation about the Trump Campaign and the altright. She gave a speech on this in reno a couple of weeks ago. The tricky part is saying half of these donald Trump Supporters, and that would potentially encompass quite a few voters who are all of these things. You showed what she said last night. Its not the first time shes used the phrase deplorable. From what we can tell its the first time that half of the supporters fit those attributes. Obviously you saw the Trump Campaign going after this. Very aggressively. Frankly, the Clinton Campaign has been trying to talk directly to moderate republicans and conservatives who maybe arent happy with some of the rhetoric coming out of trumps campaign. Weve seen in polls they have had some success, particularly with suburban women and moving them away from donald trump. It does potentially make it a bit more difficult for her to do that. Trying to say that Hillary Clinton is out of touch with the american electorate and shes disdain for a portion of this electorate. Youve seen trump tweet about this. His Campaign Managers tweeted about it. His spokesman tweeted about it. Governor pence tweeted about it and spoke about it earlier today. Theyre trying to sayhat Hillary Clinton should not be the leader of the United States because she does not respect the american public. Of course, this means theyve been trying to paint this entire time. Shes more in line with special interests than she is with regular americans. But the reality is, when you go to the Trump Campaign rallies a number of folks do hold some of the believes that she is talking about. They believe that muslims should not be allowed in this country because they are a threat to american safety. When you say president obamas name, a number of them shout out hes a muslim. When you say Hillary Clintons name a number of them chant lock her up. Hillary clinton for prison is a popular tshirt. Donald trump made explosive language on the campaign trail so far. Its not to say that donald Trump Supporters are by and large the bigoted people. Not at all. Many of them feel like the government has left them behind. Many feel they cant trust politicians and want an outsider. Somebody not part of the political establishment to shake things up. The issue that the Trump Campaign is having is that there are so many of those who do hold those believes that are coming out and being very vocal about why they support donald trump in a negative way. Clinton met with a Bipartisan Group of terrorism experts friday in new york city where she blasted trumps Foreign Policy. In conversation about our National Security would be complete unless we acknowledged that the nominee on the other side promises to do things that will make us less safe. National Security Experts on both sides of the aisle are chilled by what theyre hearing from the republican nominee. That may be the number one reason why this election is the most important in our lifetimes. Republican attendees included former cia director David Petraeus and michael cheer doff. Family members of terrorists are not and ive been in situations where there are life and death decisions to be made. Theres a lot of uncertainty about the facts and requires someone who is steady. Not going to get impatient or ang angry. What strikes me on what donald trump said and done up until now he does not demonstrate that temperament. Trumps camp boasted he has more support from military leaders than clinton does. Joining me now is westerly clark. Thank you for being here. Clintons meeting comes the heels of let me play that. I think under the leadership of barack obama and Hillary Clinton the generals have been reduced to rubble. They have been reduced to a point to where its embarrassing fur our country. They would be different generals, to be honest. General, you were at the forum. What do you make of his comments . You know, i think hes just way off base on what hes saying. We have great men and women at the top of the forces. The commander of chief and comes down through the secretary of defense. That will happen if donald trump becomes president. Theyre not his generals. These are men and women who are professionals. They give their advice, they take orders, thats the way we have to do it in a democracy. They deserve the respect of the candidate. Do you think it was disrespectful . I absolutely do. Not only disrespectful to the generals but the way that the armed forces is structured. These men and women have served some 40 years of uniform. Many fought if the in the gulf war. They have been in afghanistan for multiple tours. And below them are hundreds of thoupds of men and women in uniform who follow them. Its disrespectful to the military establishment. But, you know, donald trump doesnt understand the military establish me establishment. Some of trumps recent statements he would carpet bomb. Is this Campaign Talk or do you worry trump would act this way should he become president . Its barroom talk. Its not even Campaign Talk. Its what guys do in bars. But the danger is that when you say those things enough and they become embedded in you. If youre have the kind of temperament that donald trump indicated on this campaign, he might act that way as commander in chief. That would be dangerous and extreme. We want the president of the United States to do their homework. We want him or her to issue the understands and not pop off and make decisions on the fly. You may get some of those decisions right. But the ones that are wrong can be incredibly costly. Thats not the temperament we need in our president. Trump has repeatedly praised putin. He did so again at the commander in chief forum. Last night in florida, too. Let me play that. I dont know the gentleman, but, you know, hes been nice to me. If hes nice to me, thats fine. Not going to make a bit of difference. If we dont get great deals for our country, nothing matters to me. Its all about getting great deals. Ill tell you this, if we got along with russia, that wouldnt be so bad, would it . What do you think he thinks about these comments. Do you think he can win putin over . Do you think its important to him . Well, i think this is a reflection of the way he thinks about things. He said great a great deal. Thats good. Hes trying to build hotels in moscow. I guess he wants free land and utilities for the hotels. Thats fine if youre a rattle guy. If youre a president of the United States, its not a deal. Its continuum. Its day after day. Its hundreds of issues that are at stake between countries. And so you have to establish a reputation for reliability and consistency. You have to know when to use your power. You have to understand what is in americas interest and our longterm interest. Not just a handshake and walking away as he did in mexico. And the way he talks its not clear that he really understands that. Theres nothing in putins conduct that would make him an admirable leader. This is a man who has opponents assassinated, puts people in jail, doesnt allow the opposition to sit in the parliament. Hes basically taken control of the country. Hes used bribery, corruption, thugery, and murder. Its not a guy that is an admiral leader that americans should admire. Is he someone we have to deal with . Yes. He knows how to use power. Im afraid that if we go in there and try to deal with him like a real estate deal hell run circles around mr. Trump. I think we need an experienced leader in there. Someone who has dealt with foreign leaders like that. Thats why im supporting hill. Hillary clinton. Lets move on to north korea. What do you think the u. S. Should do about that . You know, the problem is that china has been coddling north korea for a long time. Theyve always influenced them that china doesnt want a collapse of north korea. China has to put more level against north korea. In the meantime, what were why wont they . Beef up south koreas strength. Why . Because of their limited ability to handle the consequences. Theyre worried north america could collapse. And theyre worried if south korea comes in thatll be bad for china. What this young man in charge of north korea did when he first took over was eliminated a lot of agents of china influence in north korea. China has less covert means to influence what is happening. China has to step up. It it doesnt it will face the consequences of a Missile Defense. A possible rearming with Nuclear Weapons of japan. So people are already talking about that. Its not a good thing. Its not a good thing for the world or china. But nations do what they have to do. So its time for china to take a greater responsibility for leadership in northeast asia. Emily, the Trump Campaign jumped on clintons comment. Are you worried about the impact on this campaign . I think this is relevant because in the way of the 47 comment was relevant. Because if things only stick. If they actually build to what someone believes about the candidate. People already believe that mitt romney was out of touch, was not connected to the people and didnt have any empathy for people who are in the lower, you know, half of america in working. So that is the way this could stick. People feel like this builds to what clinton thinks of them. But i do think in her full comment she was very she was very understanding of she said, you know, this is half. Half is a lot. Theres no question that a lot of, you know, kkk support is there for trump. White supremacists, thats real. Thats there. In the rest of her comment she said the rest are good people. Theyre confused. Theyre frustrated and they feel like this guy is shaking up the system. I think that can come through and connect itll help her. I think secretary clinton is determined to let trump back in the race. She had him on the ropes. He imploded in august. And between, i mean, the fbi emails were an add on that didnt come from her. Shes making the stumbling mistakes. She had a good day yesterday. She gave a good speech. A Foreign Policy speech. She showed her strength. Shes good and can outshine donald trump and got a shot at him walking off the stage. And then this, an unforced error. I dont know how at this point in the campaign shes saying anything that is not scripted or unrehearsed. She shouldnt be saying anything new like that whether its a fundraiser or a news conference. This is going to hit. Its the half is what hurts the half a basket. Right. She said deplorable before. Heil, do you think it will have a Lasting Impact . I think people will discuss it and republicans will pounce on her for it over the next few days. I think its ultimately more on the lines of what president obama said in 2008 where he infamously said there are americans who vote republican who are bitter and cling to their guns and religion. It was political hate. It doesnt ultimately hit her. The difference between that and the 47 comment which did hurt him, obama, like Hillary Clinton is talking about people from the other side. The other party. Romney was making a generalization about a vast swath of the country. And, you know, i think what hill did today in terms of walking back partially walking back the point that when she said it was half of Trump Supporters, i think that more or less mitigates it. The only way it hurts her, if you think there will be significant numbers of republicans who support her. That was never likely and the recent polls show republicans increasingly moving over to trump. If they left the house in the first place. Clinton is trying to reach out to republicans. It wont help. But its unclear if she was going to win them anyway. Its not going to hurt her with the obama coalition, the democrats and the people she needs to show up and win this election. I will disagree on one point there. About whether republicans are coming other to her and whether it helps or hurts. I think it helps her to some extent with some republicans. There are a lot of republicans, particularly suburban republicarepublican s, educated republicans who have always been republicans but dont want to be associated with the Campaign Trump is running and the comments hes making. I dont think it feels new to them. It wouldnt turn them off. I think the republicans will continue to break for clinton. I want to turn to another topic. Here is what Trump Supporters told jacob rascon outside a rally about trumps embrace of putin. Lets listen. I dont know what is going through trumps head as far as how he looks at putin. He might, like i said, he might be looking at him as a man versus as a ruler. Hes saying that he has respect from the people of his country. The people in this country dont respect our leader. We have no republican around the world anymore. I think thats what he has meant. So obviously some Trump Supporters, bill, are embracing this idea of trumps relationship, whatever that is, with a highly controversial political figure. What do you make of that support . And what do independents, what do moderates think about this . Its a weird thing. I feel like im in the Twilight Zone with the russian conversation. Typically for, you know, decade you had the republicans that would accuse the democrats of being too soft on russia and the soviets. Its one thing to work with the russians in syria. I think thats a positive move. I think thats a benefit to the globe. Its another thing to talk about him so glowingly as trump has done. I think its to his detriment. And the situation with the hacks. The hacks where russia is trying to play an active part in this campaign. It has a lot of people concerned about its got a lot of head turning. Theyre Getting Better as weve been reminded in just the last 24 hours with reports of another nuclear test in north korea. We face threats from many parts of the world. Joining me now is christopher hill, former u. S. Ambassador to korea. Ambassador, can you tell us about the leader there and his thinking behind these tests . Well, first of all, its the fifth nuclear test theyve had. They clearly have a serious military program to develop. Kim jongun his father was far more concerned about what the china thought of him and was interested, to some extent, in the negotiations with the u. S. And china and others participated in the sixparty talks. Kim jongun has shown no interest in negotiation. He doesnt really care what the chinese have to think. He doesnt care what we think. He doesnt really care about the u. N. What he cares about is gaining a deliverable Nuclear Weapon it looks like the pace is quickening. I want to read something to you. The New York Times spoke with military experts saying korea will have the ability to make a Nuclear Warhead by the year 2020. Do you think its true . How can we prevent it . Well, i dont think anyone can really make a prediction like that. What we can predict is they are all in on this developing a Nuclear Weapon. They have repeatedly testing these intercontinental ballistic missiles. What is important to understand while it used to be they were just floored by any failure, now they have failures and they just get right up and go at it again. So i think what were seeing is a is a Real National effort, at this point, to develop these weapons. And so whether its 2020 or later or even before, its hard to say. I think the pace is going much faster than the pace of our policies on how to stop this. Well, you know, my question is, their biggest ally is china. Why dont they step in . It cant be in in their interest. Its not in their interest. I think youve talked to most chinese these days and they throw up their hands in utter disgust about the North Koreans. First of all, i think theres not a consensus within china on what to do. I think if there were consensus of china, if everybody said, look, we have to sit on these people and really stop this, i mean, they could really kind of, you know, just seal the border. They could do things theyre not doing right now. I think the problem is they dont have that consensus. You have people, especially the Security Services who would regard north koreas demise as somehow a victory for america. A defeat for china. For the americans, for us, when we look at north korea, its kind of a distant security problem out there albeit a serious security problem. For the chinese its really part of their domestic structures. And so to have a neighboring marxist state go down, it would influence the internal debate within china of their own governmental structure. Its a complicated problem for them. And the result is theres no consensus. And china needs a consensus to move forcefully. The sixparty talks are slow moving or go alone . I dont think theres anything wrong with the six party talks. I dont care if its two parties or six or 66 parties. I think the real issue is do we have the leverage in place to get the North Koreans to stop this . So far we dont seem to have it. I dont think its a matter of the process because the sixparty process was always a platfo platform. We did things by laterally. The chinese did things bilaterally. We did things trilaterally. We did it with four partners. The real issue is how do you come up with a leverage . Right now we dont seem to have it. I mean, sanctions dont seem to be working. The idea of going to war. You have to look at the geography of the korean peninsula. There are 20 million South Koreans close to the border. No one wants to start a war. The question is whether there are measures, obviously, quiet clan dedestine measures that cae taken. It has picked up pace in recent years. We have to figure out a way. It would be in the realm of cyber issues, but we have to figure out a way to slow down this thing. Right now theyre moving a pace to have a deliverable Nuclear Weapon i would say soon, whether its 2020 or 2022, it doesnt really matter. They are moving in that direction. If you talk to any security researchers they found it easy to tamper with the machines. Sometimes even remotely. Where are the flaws . Do you think they could be addressed before the election . So the biggest flaws for the immediate short term election coming up are in places like georgia, which is a competitive state, places like virginia, florida, pennsylvania. Pennsylvania and georgia are probably bigger trouble spots because they dont have any kind of paper trail. Where if you needed to do a recount you could be able to do that. The problem is like i said some of the states this those states the races are very tight. Could it make a difference . Yes. You think about florida in 2002. It wasnt many votes that decided the election and other states have been close. It would take a concerted effort. But the machines are vulnerable. Theres very little doubt about that. Some states will tell you theyre not. For the most part everybody agrees they are. Paper ballots have their issues. We remember the hanging chad. Why are there so many differences, actually, among states . Why is it were not unified how people vote . Because these are the voting process is controlled at local and state level. Theres Something Like 9,000 jurisdictions that are controlling elections. And any effort that has hinted at even dhs wanting to help, for instance, some georgia officials said we dont want dhs to give us advice. Do you think it should change . Its not for me to decide. I think if you look at, you know, all the people who are experts on this say, yeah, it would help. I dont know if its for me to decide. Another move to kill the zika virus. He separated himself from trump. He is running on his own record and as his own person. Marco rubio is doing this in florida. Pat toomey is saying he is going to be a check on whoever is the next president. Senate republicans and candidates on the republican side are at least hedging their betts in the event of trumps popularity going down. It is going to come down to indiana, pennsylvania, nevada and new hampshire. In illinois, you have mark kirk, who is in danger and i think in wisconsin, you have ron johnson. They seem the likeliest to lose their seats. Marco rubio pulling ahead of democratic, patrick murphy. The miami harold. Even after months of campaigning, many likely voters still dont know who murphy is or dont have an opinion of him, polls have shown. Can he make up ground . He better make up ground. Florida is a strange state. It is basically three states, lower, middle and northern florida. They all vote very differently, right . Very different patterns and demographics. You have to run three campaigns. He needs to do a lot to get ta name i. D. Up. Marco rubio had an entire president ial campaign. Rubio has a lot of ground to make up. He was barely in the senate. He was not only not elected very long but he didnt show up much. Do you think his president ial bid did much . He was out campaigning and trying to run to the right and get in the mud with donald trump. You can call it the right. It was the mud where he was going. It is a very hard year to get known if you are not an incumbent. That q poll was great news for republicans. It is a cautious piece of optimism. At the end of the day, it is going to be the turnout, who comes out, whether republicans sit on their hands that are never trump and vice versa on the other side. This is a very difficult year to get known. All the oxygen has been sucked up by the president ial race more than any time in the 30 years i have worked in the business. The news desks that would tiply cover a senate or governors race are so absorbed with whats happening between trump and clinton z th clinton. They are incredibly important. It affects the entire balance. They are incredibly important. The president ial race has been so engaging. I will put it in a nice way. Because they cant get attention, it does play pretty well for the republicans who are up in the senate right now and the house candidate, particularly for the senate. These are republicans that are elected in 2010, a huge year for republicans. A Big Tea Party swing. A lot of republicans are elected who are more conservative than their states. In another year, they could be getting more attention to that race locally. People would question whether they were a good fit for the state. Because they dont get that much attention because of the president ial, it is more obscure. We can add a word of caution. Down ballot races tend to catch up as the election gets closer to the top of the ticket. Hillary clinton is still favorite to win the election. The down ballot Democratic Candidates are probably going to benefit from that as people get more serious. Thats something that republicans have to take into consideration. Thats something a number of these candidates are taking into consideration. It may help them a little bit. If Hillary Clinton is going to win the president ial election, then i think Democratic Candidates will gain from the position they are in right now down the ballot. A question to all of you, bill. I would love to start with you, because i know you have a lot of opinions in this matter. In which races do you think a republican will most likely be hurt by Donald Trumps race . I think the mark kirk race. That is likely a democratic pickup at this point. I think thats probably the spot. Republicans were expected at this point in the campaign, cautious republicans, were expecting to be paying a much higher price for trumps candidacy, particularly among moderate republicans, female republicans. It doesnt seem to be transferring down yet, which is not to say it wont happen. Back to the gentlemans point. It is not to say that the turnout will be suppressed as a result of that. As of now, it doesnt look like the fears or the predictions that republicans would pay a huge price downballot is coming to pass. Emily, what do you think . Illinois is very likely. I think nevada is another place where the republican, joe hack, has tried to distance himself from trump without going too far away. So far his numbers have held. Last night, Hillary Clinton calling half of trumps supporters a basket of deplore i believes. She said she was being grossly jenal stick and regrets using the word half. Hillary clinton just hours ago issuing a statement saying she regretted a portion of her comments about Trump Supporters. Hillary clinton is under fire for her comments calling half of Donald Trumps supporters a, quote, basket of deplorables. You could put half of trumps supporters into what i call the basket of deplorables, the racist, sexists, homophobic, ze know phobic, isla ma phobic, you need it.
