To get here. And its a little bit of a preview of what we might expect to hear when he takes the podium tomorrow night, and addresses the convention. And, of course, tamron, the headline has been that this has been a divided party. Last night, Bernie Sanders tried to take some strides to fix that. So did elizabeth warren. Today it seems as though its a little bit calmer, a little bit more unity than there was yesterday. But, of course, senator sanders just addressed some delegates from california. There were some jeers there, as well. This is still a work in progress for the democrats. Tonight, former president bill clinton set to statake the staga character witness for his wife, one of her big challenges, restoring the Publics Trust in here and he is going to take a step tonight. Kristen welker, live at wells fargo and as you mentioned, history made here in philadelphia again. Democrats will officially make Hillary Clinton the first female president ial nominee for a major party with the formal rollout or the roll call of states. This morning, there have been more signs of disunity, a small number of Bernie Sanders supporters not on board with his message of a united front against donald trump. Senator sanders made it through speeches to three different state delegations before he was booed by some of his supporters in the california delegation. And it prompted a sharp rebuke from senator sanders. What we must do, or forever go back in regret is to defeat donald trump and elect Hillary Clinton. [ cheers and applause ] in my view [ booing ] its easy its easy it is easy to boo, but it is harder to look your kids in the face who are living under donald trump as president. [ cheers and applause ] again, this took place just a short time ago before the california delegation. He gave several other speeches that went off a lot better than that situation. But this follows senator sanders dramatic appearance last night where he was the main speaker. His supporters cheering him on for three minutes, an ovation unmatched yesterday. Senator sanders then giving Hillary Clinton his ringing endorsement. Based on her ideas and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States. [ cheers and applause ] it was certainly a big night, and many have said that the turning point, or when the tide seemed to turn was when comedian and actress, sarah silverman, ad libbing a message to passionate Bernie Sanders supporters, like herself. Can i just say to the bernie or bust people youre being ridiculous. [ cheers and applause ] but the showstopper, by all accounts. First Lady Michelle obama stealing the show with what the atlantic magazine called a, quote, speep for the ages. It featured what the Washington Post called a takedown as she and her husband try to guide and protect their own daughters. How we urge them to ignore those who question their fathers citizenship or faith. [ cheers and applause ] how we insist that the hateful language they hear from other public figures on tv does not represent the true spirit of this country. [ cheers and applause ] how we explain that when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you dont stoop to their level. No, our motto is, when they go low, we go high. [ cheers and applause ] dont let anyone ever tell you that this country isnt great. That somehow we need to make it great again. Because this right now is the greatest country on earth. [ cheers and applause ] we need to pour every last ounce of our passion and our strength and our love for this country into electing Hillary Clinton as president of the United States of america. [ cheers and applause ] interesting. Donald trump took to twitter to go after senator warren, elizabeth warren, Bernie Sanders, the moment you watch there. Nothing from his social media. Now our new nbc News Survey Monkey weekly tracking poll out this morning shows no significant bounce for donald trump following the republican convention. Hillary clinton still leads trump by a single point nationally, which is unchanged from a week ago. Joining me now, former naacp president and ceo, ben jealous, a sanders supporter who this weekend, live on our show, endorsed Hillary Clinton. I wish we could put something on every delegate. If we were able to find out, i bet you everything i have that hardly anyone will vote for trump. Come on, man. Are you kidding me . Are you kidding . No, theyre going to show up. Look, they worked really hard. They did more to change the attitude in the party than anything thats happened in a long, long time. Its all for the better. Its all for the better. How are your feelings about the boos. No, no hard look. You know i know youre 80 years younger than i am. But youve covered more than one campaign. Youve covered more than one campaign. And you know how hard they worked. And, you know, every every convention where theres been a convention fight, what ive observed is that, you know, people are there, they made it to the convention, they didnt quite make it all the way. And so theres always that piece that should be us. It should be them. Thats normal, man maybe isnt it problematic, though, that the Bernie Sanders folks now believe that the deck was stacked against them from the beginning . No. By the way that whole thing about the emails doesnt help any. But like one of bernies major supporters said last night. He didnt lose or she didnt win because of email. Come on, man. And the end of the day is that bernie and his supporters did more to change the party than the party did to change him. Mr. Are you surprised that donald trump is doing as well as he is and at least one poll ahead of Hillary Clinton . I think this is really, really early on. And i think, as i had a grandfather from scranton, ambrose fin began. And he would say, joey, people dont focus until after the end of the world series. Any want to take a bet on this election . Im not allowed to bet as a Vice President. Okay . But come on. If you could if i could mr. Vice president , should the clinton and Sanders Campaign have done more to unify the party before the convention . All right. We were listening in to more of this impromptu q a with Vice President joe biden at the wells fargo center, not very far from where we are. Let me bring back nina turner, ben jealous. It struck me here not only just the folksy way that joe biden has in the way he works a crowd. But he is saying to Bernie Sanders supporters, we need you and we want you. Yes. And you did accomplish something. So dont feel bitter. You have changed the party more than the party changed you guys. Thats right. And hes the first one to come from the heart, tamron. Everyone else is coming from the head. Even last night clinton supporters telling this moment as the Vice President just did, that these types of fights happen, and people are emotional about it. And received that emotion and lets work through it. But dont dismiss it. However, at some point, the clock is ticking and is the talk you do have to get over it. Let me play real quick, guys number six last night, Hallie Jackson spoke with ashley andrews, a delegate Bernie Sanders supporter. Heres what she told halley jackson. She still has not moved to say no to the tpp, which will severely impact our economy and our environment. In a negative way. So the better option is not to vote . Im still trying to come to terms with what to do. Those who say that unity is essential in order to beat donald trump. Do you buy into that, ashley . I think that unity has not been displayed in this convention today. Bernie sanders was barely represented on that stage. His delegates reporter he himself came out and said hes proud to stand with clinton. At 10 30 p. M. After we had to sit through the clinton love fest. Yes, we finally got to see our candidate. A clinton love fest. Shes the presumptive nominee. Bernie sanders, being the final speaker, was a complement to bernie. I know, but shes [ chant bernie ] but let us not forget, the email scandal came out this week. So for some people to say we dont have time, this just happened this week. And it is my hope under the leadership of chairwoman donna brazil some more will go forward to show sanders supporters. Speaking of cleaning house, the audience were selective in who they booed. You got up there. You commanded the room. You held their attention, you kept it real. What was the difference in why you were able to keep the jeers from coming your way, as a sanders supporter who now supports Hillary Clinton . As these people yell Election Fraud behind me. Folks from the Bernie Campaign know that know where my heart is, seen me go hard for our guy, know i will tell the truth. And the reality is that thats sort of integrity and connection matters. But, you know, the the reality is, we have 105 days to keep a madman out of the white house and thats just what it is. And folks in our movement understand that what makes a Movement Strong is that some are inside and some are outside. They understand bernie gets he as a u. S. Senator has a responsibility to lead our country in the right direction, but the folks who are like me doing that understand that folks on the outside will increasingly come inside. But as joe said, they did a lot of hard work. They have very firm principles, and if they need to see more, i think they will see more this week. They will see more next week, and by the time we get to november, we should be in a strong place. And by the numbers at this point, 11 in the latest poll, 11 of Bernie Sanders supporters say that they would not support Hillary Clinton. I mean, listen, vocal and should be heard. But a reality is, 11 . Im sure that if you look at some of the republicans, including bush and romney, who said they would not vote for donald trump, that number is high on the other side. But roll back that tape to 2008 and we have the pumas and the Hillary Clinton supporters and probably about the same. Let me get you to stand by. I want to go back to wells fargo center. Where Kristen Welker is standing by. Kristen, new details to report for us. Reporter well, thats right. First of all, just a quick recap of what we just heard from Vice President biden, who, by the way, tamron, is still working the room behind me. This is biden being biden. No one engages in rail politics better than him. Shook every hand in the room. We did have a chance to ask a few questions, and i asked him about the divisions, the deep divisions we saw yesterday in the Democratic Party. He down played the disunity, said this was a hardfought primary battle, this is the tension you will see heading into a Convention Like this. He also anticipated the democrats are not going to stay home during the fall election, and he said, look, the bottom line is, he is putting his bet on the fact that more sanders supporters are going to come out and pull the lever for secretary clinton. In terms of that new information that i have, tamron, there is going to be a roll call tonight. All 50 states are going to engage in this roll call. Thats different than 2008, when it was abbreviatabbreviated. I spoke with an official who told me the Clinton Campaign is working behind the scenes right now to have Bernie Sanders place clintons name into nomination, to effectively officially nominate her, just as we saw secretary clinton do back in 2008. The details still being worked out. This is not a done deal, this is still a work in progress. But if that were to happen, tamron, the optics would be powerful. It would be a significant and yet another step toward unifying this party. All right, kristen. Let me go back to ben and nina. You heard the negotiation is going on for Bernie Sanders to officially nominate Hillary Clinton. I heard a delegate yesterday, sanders supporters say i trust everything he says. And then when asked, why dont you trust what he is saying about Hillary Clinton, no it answer. If these wonderful people who are here, Bernie Sanders Supporters Trust him, why not trust him now . The folks do trust him. [ chanting bernie ] roll back the tape on bernie, its the same speech, stands for the same thing. Hes also, as somebody who started out as an activist, very respectful of letting people go through their own process. And thats part of why they trust him. He is hes very clear. I can lead people, i cant control them. But ben when i hear a delegate say, i trust him, except for what he says about Hillary Clinton thats a delegate hoe owe not in the 90 who are already with him. And i think we can describe the convention so far as protests and promise. Last night we saw a lot of promise. Some people want to make sure that those promises are kept executed. And thats fine. And i agree like the tpp. Right. Like with tpp. People are hurt. There are grown men crying. I couldnt even walk through the arena without people crying, because senator sanders has awakened the sleeping giants and when you talk about revolution, baby, this is revolution. [ cheers and applause ] and you have people who are true believers in those causes. We have to let them have the week. So your revolution is televised. Tonight when the roll call is done, and Bernie Sanders, again, stands for Hillary Clinton, your revolution hasnt died, but theyre still booing. But, tamron, there has to be some of us to be able to build that bridge. [ chanting ] so i receive what theyre saying and doing. Well, they love you here. Somebody has to receive. Let me just say this. She is the first lady of the United States of america. In that hall last night, there was, again, not much of a dry eye. And she gave love to senator sanders and senator sanders supporters. She gave love to those in the hall that had been with senator clinton, former secretary clinton for a very long time. And she gave love to america. And that was a steady hand, a real handled. And let me just say this for a moment. I am compassionate and passionate about bernie supporters. In the rules committee, i stood up and said we love you. We will continue to fight with you for what is good for america. What she said last night is that where we are going in nominating Hillary Clinton to be the next president of the United States is whats right for america. She told us about what was good for our children, she indicated, most of all, how important it is that our children are watching. When Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were running, we didnt see any of the casting of bad names and wrong messages. They ran a race to speak to all of america. And what the first lady said was, that i love so much, is that we dont go low when they go low. We go high. And thats what america is going to have to do, as we run this race to go high, to take our children high, to take those who are vulnerable high. And she also said, and what an emotion. What a unscripted emotion when she indicated that as her children now have the privilege of playing in the yard of a place that slaves built, she said in that next sentence, and now theyll grow up accepting the fact that a woman can be president of the United States of america. I want to play a little bit more of what she said, regarding the temperament of the person who should be in the white house. She believes is Hillary Clinton. Of lets play what Michelle Obama said, the first lady. Someone who understands that the issues a president facis are not black and cannot be boiled down to 140 characters. Look, because [ cheers and applause ] because when you have the Nuclear Codes at your fingertips and the military in your command, you cant make snap decisions. You cant have a thin skin or a tendency to lash out. You need to be steady and measured and wellinformed. Hearing her say steady, measured, wellinformed. That was making the case of what democrats feel is at stake. Even while balancing the concerns of Bernie Sanders supporters. What you see as whats at stake for this country. Here is the closest living validater of what president barack obama had to go through. I admire him. I realize as a member of congress what we went through as a nation. And i realize how valuable his steady hand was. But heres someone who was his closest confidante, who understood the high moments and the tears and the stress and watching him lead, and so to have her say, one, i trust hillary. But more importantly, how she contrasts this spontaneous volcanic personality who is now the nominee of the republican party. He is a frightening entity for guiding not only the most powerful nation in the world, but guiding the world to its ultimate best place, and that is peace. And i believe in peace. I was not for the iraq war. And therefore, i understand we have to do things in this element and climate of terrorism, but we must have that steady hand. Here is the chief validater. Thank you, mrs. But thank you for understanding what your husband went through and realizing who will have to take the lead and that will be the next president of the United States, Hillary Rodham clinton. I think Michelle Obama was if it didnt bring a tear to your eye at some point, then i dont know whats wrong. I thought Bernie Sanders did an absolutely magnificent job. Deserves a lot of credit for what hes accomplished over the last year, bringing millions of democrats who felt unaffected or disaffected back into the party. Were closing ranks. Were going to elect a democratic president. Looking at, as you pointed out, the closing of ranks, you and Bernie Sanders had your own divide. You had to close ranks. It was a time when senator sanders want wanted you off as the co chair of the democratic platform committee, which you just said was the most progressive platform, but you didnt see eyetoeye with him, and he didnt want you on that committee. How did you mend fences . Is. I think that we have some policy differences. Thats a reality. But, you know, as chair of the platform committee, i think we did quite a good job. Scheurlely franklin and i were asked to do that. We were fair. We were inclusive. Everything got discussed, everything got processed. And most things got into the platform that people wanted. And i think there was a Mutual Respect that grew out of that process. You can have policy differences with folks, and talk about those policy differences. But they dont have to affect ones work. You talk about the policy differences yesterday. We heard a number of Bernie Sanders supporters discussing tpp and not feeling confident that democrats and that Hillary Clinton, in fact, would stick to their word regarding it. How do you convince these voters that this is not a temporary compromise . I think that, first of all, secretary clinton, soon to be our nominee, has said shes not in favor of this treaty. Thats number one. Number two, we have a president , sitting democratic president , who is supportive of that treaty. Has worked extensively on it. And i dont think we need to pick fights with our friends on either side. We have a candidate who says that shes against the treaty as its currently drafted. I think thats good enough. Ill take her word for it. But as you pointed out, rightfully so, puts you at conflict with president obama, who will be speaking before this crowd. I try to never be in conflict with the president who i support. And i think the American People support. Hes at the highest Approval Rating that hes had during his presidency. I think theres a growing respect for what he and his wife combined have accomplished on behalf of the American People. This is an exciting time, and i dont think you put your finger in somebodys eye. Just to tee up tonight, bill clinton will speak. We understand that Hillary Clinton will watch it owl from their home in chappaqua. What do you expect from the former president. What can he say to make the case for secretary clinton . I think hes the great explainer. He has this uncanny ability to break things down into terms that people can relate to. He certainly showed that in 12. He showed it in 08. He is a great communicator and i think hell use those skills to communicate. Just as i think senator warren did a great job in explaining her position, just as i think senator sanders did a great job. Cory booker lit the room on fire. I even got to give a speech. Republican president ial nominee, donald trump, on the road today with some blistering reaction today, one of the dnc. Just a short time ago, trump spoke at the veterans of foreign wars, national convention. In charlotte, north carolina. Where he blasted the democrats for never mentioning isis in speeches last night. But its when he started talking about Hillary Clinton and benghazi that several people in the audience shouted what we heard at the rnc. Lock her up. We know how she takes care of the veterans. Just look at her invasion of libya. And her handling of benghazi. A disaster. Or look at her emails. Which put americas entire National Security at risk. I understand youve got new information from the Trump Campaign, regarding the email leaks, as well as the reaction to day one of the dnc. Yeah, so lets talk a little bit about, first of all, this russia issue and then well come back and talk day one of the dnc. So bear with me. One of the things thats happened since this leaked email issue, since the nearly 20,000 dnc emails were released by wikileaks, democrats have said this is something that was intentionally date of birth by the russians potentially to help the candidacy of donald trump, pointing to the timing hours, a couple days before the start of the democratic convention. What we have seen multiple Cyber Security experts tell nbc news, it is likely russia is behind this suspected hack. Wikileaks later leaking those documents. Let me read a statement i got from the Trump Campaign, pushing back against the idea there is any linkage there. That while mr. Trump, according to a campaign spokesperson, has many Successful International businesses and properties, he has no business in russia, making the democrats attack that much more pathetic. While this of course is about black lives matter, its about gun violence which includes tragedies like newtown that we saw play now the orlando pulse. Hillary clinton and the democrats are trying to walk that line. Theyre embracing Law Enforcement and the important job that Law Enforcement plays in our society but also saying that the situation with young black men being cut down by police also needs to be addressed.
