An impact on the debate. Chuck, we have got an election here and referendum there. But, the big cross currents across the atlantic of this whole antitrade deal and antinato. Theyre all experiencing this middle class squeeze in the same way. There are similarities in between what sanders and trump is tapping into and what Boris Johnson is tapping into the uk. We can see evidence of this in france and south korea. Lets call this event what it was. This was a campaign for david cameron. They knew the risk of having an outsider say to the british people, what do you do. What does it tell you how nervous cameron is . He knew there would be criticisms that came with the president of the United States do it. The president would not do it unless cameron asks him to do it. Local coverage tonight is going to be about who are you mr. President . There will be a lot of this debate, should he have done it or should he have not. That tells you, this breaks it. Cameron is beyond nervous. It is risky to ask an outsider to participate and even a friendly outsider like the president of the United States. Yeah, that was a big deal. Unity is under strained. That was a strong statement. I have not heard him say that. And a time when nato was under strained and thats obvious but a shocking one. His next stop in germany. Under strained of the crisis. We have to leave it there. To our friends, chuck todd, see you later on daily and ron allen traveling with the president onto germany and kier simmons, that does it for us. Tamron hall became very Close Friends with prince over the years. Prince composed a theme song for her show news nation right here on msnbc. This is the new at news station theme song composed by none other the music icon, prince. Following his death, tamron tweeted, a bird without a song. I lost one of my best friends today. I know he would have an advise right now. Prince, i am listening as always. Earlier today, i talked to tamron of the prince that she knew and the conversations they had of the last days of his wife. Tamron, lets start with how you guys became such good friends. How did it happen . Oh, hi craig and hi to our team there. Prince reached out to me years ago and we just bonded over his interests in news and interests in family and it just turned into what was one of the most incredible friendships and relationships in my life when i tweeted out that i lost one of my best friends, that was not something that i ever imagine i would say. I knew this is hard and i know that you talked to him a few days ago as well. Did you get the sense during that conversation that there was anything wrong, that he was not okay in anyway . Like everyone else, i started to see on social media and information about an emergency landing. I emailed him on saturday and i said prince, are you okay . He immediately wrote back, are you okay . That was kind of the joke being that we would do sometimes. He said called me and we talked for nearly three hours which is not uncommon for us to do. I didnt hear anything that sounded like a flu or the cold. We did not talk a lot about it. It was clear that he did not want to elaborate on that. Our conversation wens went the that it always go, he talked about life and he wanted me to come for his concert. He posted different events including for the National Black journalists recently coming out. He has always wanted that place to be opened to his fans. I took the fact that he was hosting something and wanted me to be there of a sign that he was okay. I never felt the need to ask again what was wrong. Monday, i was in a restaurant, i video taped the restaurants music and it was one of his songs. I texted him and i said you are everywhere. But nowhere at the same time. Which is again, how prince communicates. He eventually wrote back, you are thinking of me because i am thinking of you, too. And, i never imagine again that would be my last correspondence with him. In my life, the only other person that i spoke with or speak with more than prince is my mother. This is the person that i communicate more than anyone. And, i think it is important for people to understand that prince was a compassionate person. We recently went with another great friend to visit harris, yesterday, he told me he was taken in by prince, he did not know how much he was for the truth and for people and we sat there forever, at harrys house. His history of civil rights and his ability to transform his career to an actor to an activist. Thats what prince always wanted. Thats why he always challenged the Music Industry and it was not for royalty or money. It was an unfair system for artists. For me, i am a lucky person that i have had a friend like this. But, it is not loss on me that he was much more than music. I think people know that and i love the fact that he on saturday, he wanted to even in his illness be around people who love music and appreciated him. You know, it is he did not talk about life and all of these things of death. He did not look at time. So it was not conscious of how long he would legislative or what he had to do next. For him, this was always an ongoing journey and he was always creating music and always opened to new young people and new band, third eye girl, those are three young women that he took in. All young talents. He was a great person. You were recently featured on the cover of a kisingle. I think we have this cover of the single, there is tamron hall in a purple dress. How did that come about . I have said this before, i send picture of whatever outf s outfits. Prince would always love to give his thoughts both good and bad, i have taken a selfie, i have given him that selfie years ago and he sent me a note and we typically would communicate late at night even though i get up early on the today show, we would resume our conversations in the afternoon. He said i am going to put this on my single. I am thinking how did i go from a fan and singing the track from purple rain to my friend saying i am going to put this picture of you on my single. You know, those are the things that, of course, are big headlines. The things that i have in my intimate mind and my heart because he was so private about his life, you know, those are the things that warms my heart. He protected the privacy of his friends. Even though i am talking about him today and with you and on our show, there are just great things i wish i can tell people but he wanted them to stay private. He didnt want people to know all of the ways he helped other people. He did it as this silent angel and including how he helped me in my life on many occasions. So, you know, he loves his fans and thats what is important and they love him and i had a chance on saturday to tell my friend how much i love him and thats what matters. As you indicated hes private and circle is very small and tight. What can you tell us about how folks inside that circle, how they are all doing today . They are devastated. They are devastated. Thats what i can tell you. Overwhelming. Tamron, i know this has been very hard for you and i know it is been a very difficult 24 hours, my friend thank you very much. Thank you, craig. I am very sorry for your loss. I am sorry for the world. Hes not gone. Hes not gone. That was my conversation with my friend, colleague, tamron hall with her memories of prince. The civil rights activist, mr. Belafonte, thank you for calling us this afternoon. We heard tamron talked about that meeting that you had with prince and hes taken in by you. What was it about prince . Beyond all of what we have been listening to the past of two days of the perception of prince hes a great diver diversity. Most of them being ideas of stimulations and graciousness and commitment, what i took up of him, he just came into a new phase of his life, so he said is challenge ng ting the way in he performed. The last concert he did, he did about 30 songs in the evening and of the 30 songs, only five of those songs are from his origin original repetoir. Everything that the audience heard of a new song and a new point of view. He was in the space seeking change, looking for challenge. Gre great artist. His recent search is seeking for change. He was very much [ inaudible ] mr. Belafonte. We are having a minor problem here on our end with your phone connections. Well get our engineers to talk to you about it. Hang on, melissa, thank you for being with me. First of all, what is your fondest memory of prince . My fondest memory was the last time that i saw him and it is so funny, tamron was there. He had invited us to a party in new york, and he was showcasing his new artist which he talked about. They told me it was downstairs waiting you know say hi to him. Prince, wants to say hi to you and they grabbed me and ran me to the djs booth and they just stopped me and he was standing in front of me and i screamed and he screamed back at me, he was like ah. It was like little ah it was so funny. Tamron was there, i am sure she remembers that. He wrote that song do me baby. It was about among other things. I want to play a portion of him performing, take a listen. Do me baby wow, how did he feel about your version of the song, melissa . Well, he loved it. I am so happy to be one of the few artists that he let record one of his songs. When we first did it, the president of the Record Company was holding the song for two years. The next r b artist that i signed, she got to do that song and it was me. You know in the 80s were not saying do me baby like that. It was kind of daunting for me to do that. I had to get dads approval on that. Once my dad said go ahead and do it. We went in and did it and Paul Lawrence did a great job. It went number one for like four weeks. I think i was in los angeles and Lionel Richie had a concert at the roseville, thousands of people and they arranged for me to meet prince backstage like in the green room. We both had on white leather, it was too funny and he came over to me and he said thank you for a great song. I was like you wrote this song, it is your song, he was like yeah but you made it great. You wrote it yeah, but you made it great. Thatll stay with me forever. He was such a sweet, kind person every time that i met him. One time when i went to the studios when i was working with terry lewis and he had a party, i was blown away by the department that had the clothes and his shoes where they sew everything and made it for him and the studio and the chill out room. He just always seemed like he had it so together. I appreciate his artistry and kindness. With prince to me every time i saw him, it was not life and music. Music and life was one. His passion for that is what i will always remember. Melissa morgan remembering prince this afternoon. Thank you, i want to bring back the legendary actor, performer, harry belafonte. When we broke up for a second, you were talking about the songs he put together for the city of baltimore, i was just there yesterday on the anniversary o f freddie gray east death. We heard a lot of stories about his activism and his philanthro philanthropy. We know that when Travon Martin was killed in florida, it was prince that helped his family. Why did you think that activism was so important for prince. I think that he took a look at his life and all the things. He felt that in the arena of social activism and commentary, he did not participate too much in that. We are not quite sure he wanted to participate. He thought what he needed todd do was to talk to people who had been committed to our social issues and criminal justice and to talk to us about our experiences and having to express our own point of views and to see whether or not of what he was hearing and what he wanted to do. How compatible were those two sources. I met with him more than once. Both instances, he flew to new york and both instances we spent of some hours together. As as matter of feedback, we were supposed to meet again this sunday to continue pick up where we left off because he wanted to begin to do performances and leave young men and women, social activists that he had not met before. He was on a search for his next place. I think you saw in his heart of the power of it and the use of it through our social change. It was a great possibility to him so use himself and found himself to be. One legend talking about another legend on this friday afternoon. Mr. Harry belafonte, enjoy your weekend, i appreciate your time. Thank you. When we return, well get you caught up on politics and the republican race for the white house of the stop Trump Movement and my interview with princes exfiance, he tells me of what no one else knows and first, the cast of hit way washington from prince. The focus today is on the stop Trump Movement, they sort of got into this game a little bit late and they decided to come down after paul. They felt they needed to come down and get a sense of what was going on in these hallways and mange sure people are hearing from them of all the reasons why Republican Party in their view should not support donald trump. They have an uphill battle to a certain extend. As i have been talking to republicans here over the course of the last couple of days. There are people who are warming up to this idea of unifying behind donald trump, avoiding a fractured contested convention. The stop trump force is passed and now is to convince them of the pack of the convention and thats the best route of the party. I was talking to katy packer, one of the people leading this Trump Movement, she says they are not backing off any of this and they intend to push forward aggressively, they to say, i spoke to some people who do want to see trump and they are pessimistic that it is going to be possible. Kate. All right, msnbcs kasie hunt down in florida. A few times ago, president obama and cameron wrapped up the conversation in britain. Britain votes one month whether if he will remain in the eu. You are welcomed and you should come and enjoy yourself. I think you will be treated with extraordinary hospitality. I also think that the laws that have been passed there are wrong and should be over turned. Packed the venue to capacity. Those who knew sometime sometimes giving us a glimpse of what it was like to be apart of his life. Sheila eve met prince at a concert back in 1978. The two collaborated on music for years and later engaged at one point. She talked to me earlier about their connection and his untimely death. So many of us admired him for his artistry on the stage, but you knew the prince off the stage as well. What kind of man was he . What kind of person was he . He was a gentleman. He was funny. A lot of you did not get to see the funny side of him. Hes competitive, a perfectionist, he enjoyed music. It was his life. He would eat music and breathe and sleep. Everything was about music and creating it. Doing things that no one would ever done and trying to get music back to the artist and fighting for the rights and for us to own our own masters and the way that industry had changed. He fought for us. Sheila, i dont think a lot of folks appreciated or knew how gener generous he was with his money and time. We heard about his social activism when spike lee was trying to raised money f for malcolm x, it was princed that stepped up and freddie gt s martin, it was prince that stepped up. There were tons. As far as i can remember and even in 84 when we started the purple rain tour, we would stop at different cities and if we could, we could play at the handicap and bringing toys for kids with cancer and he always wanted to give back to kids. Two of you, you are biggest hit glamorous life and love bizarre, you were his most famous percussionist for several tours. What was it like collaborating with prince . It was a lot of fun. We learned a lot about each other in collaborating. I think it was just as much fun collaborating with him as it was playing and performing with him. He would just come up with crazy ideas and you kind of go, i am not sure if thats going to wor but lets try it. Thats what was great about him. It was great about him because by the time he was done with what he was creating, youre like, this started here and now it became this. He was a visionary. He was a genius at writing songs. And the way he wrote songs and the way he told stories, you know. The way his music will live on forever. Sheila e. Earlier. It was the movie and soundtrack that defined princes career. Purple rain released in 1984, at the time he was just 25 years old, it became nothing short of an instant cult classic, earning more than 80 million at the box office, prince himself even winning an oscar for the film score and his top single, it p topped the record charts and selling 1 million tickets. And susan rogers, princes audio engineer from 1983 to 1987, gen, let me start with you. At one point he had the number one film, number one album, number one single in america. What was the tour like . Well, for me, it was over the top, because it was my first tour. I came from a background being in Public Relations for a Cultural Institution and now i was thrown into the music world. I had never seen anything like it. It was absolutely fascinating. You were also his stylist. And he was known for a number of things throughout the course of his life. His style always near the top of the list. How would you describe his style and how did it evolve over the years . First of all, i was not his stylist, i was one of the people who would shop for prince, whether it was fabric i would work with his styling department. He had a whole department of people who made clothes for him and he was very clear about what he wanted. My job was to help implement that or execute it, so i might fly back and forth to new york from minneapolis to purchase the materials and get the things that he needed so that he could have these out landish outfits. Susan, lets talk about the sound for which he was famous. When we talked to folks they talked about he was softspoken. His voice was low. But when he sang, fallseto. Where did that sound come from . How did he come up with that sound . I dont know. I dont know when he first started singing fallseto because i wasnt there. I can say its somewhat rare. We dont hear that much adult male falsetto. Its an interesting phenomenon, speaking as a cognitive psychologist, its a paradox women would find adult male falsetto, that high voice very attractive. One reason is it can signify a man has a broad range, means he has powerful singing capacity. Another possible reason might be that he sounds more feminine, therefore he sounds more approa approachable. I dont know. It remains to be investigated. That falsetto lasted throughout his career, i think, to the best of my knowledge. It was impressive. Youd be hard pressed to find another with a comparable falsetto. Susan rogers, gen leads, i wish we had more time, lady, thank you so much. Thank you.
