Ive got some bad news for him. Together, we will rebuild the trade Union Movement in this country. Clinton campaigning outside new york city today. Not just any moment. She has her sights set on the 291 delegates in the empire state. A new quinnipiac poll shows a tightening race in new york. Our msnbc Political Team is tracking all the latest developments on the trail across the country. We begin with msnbcs Hallie Jackson who joins us live from los angeles and obviously, top of mind on the republican side, hallie, this morning, is donald trump and how he tried to contain the damage from these comments. How is that going . Reporter the a story line. A full walkback of his comments. Saying a woman should not be punished, she is the victim but if making abortion illegal and upheld this and ban abortion under law, its the doctor, he says or the person performing this illegal act held legally responsible. Reiterating now, hes prolife with exceptions all of this, of course, after he got what you called backlash from both sides of this debate from people both antiabortion and pro life. March for life did not believe this is the right response from donald trump or at least the response that they would support. You see republican rivals weighing in now. John kasich held a News Conference talking about trump. Wednesday hell hold another media availability as he works to get his message out. And ted cruz today on a radio show in wisconsin also addressing this. Heres what he had to say. Donald has not thought seriously about the issues facing the country and hes willing to say just about anything to try to get elected. Being prolife and i am u unequivocally pro life means fighting to defend the lives of every unborn person, the child but also the mother and the precious gift women have to give life and give birth. And so donalds notion of punishing women was just, it was bizarre and something which i strongly disagree. You see cruzs comments echoed by Mike Huckabee this morning on morning joe who talked about the fact that donald trump has not thought through some of his positions particularly when it comes to abortion. Theres also some discussion about things said, of course, about his comments on using Nuclear Weapons. And meeting with Foreign Policy advisors. This is a big question mark up until the last week or so. Who is advising him on Foreign Policy . Who is he talking to . This comes on the heels that raised eyebrows, one with the Washington Post and one with the new york times. An extensive indepth interview. It lasted some 90 minutes on Foreign Policy and donald trump talked about the idea of potentially allowing japan, south korea, even saudi arabia, as he said earlier this week, to obtain and develop Nuclear Weapons which goes against, our colleagues point out, decades of u. S. Policy. All happening, by the way, as in new york, there is the Nuclear Summit with president obama. Thank you. Turning now to Chris Jansing with women voters getting their reaction to the most recent answers about abortion. What are you hearing on the ground . Are these comments having an impact on female voters . Reporter i think theres no doubt about it, theyre certainly talking about it. We see its lunchtime. Theres no doubt people have had this top of mind. Youve heard ted cruz this morning. Talk radio hosts have been vehemently anticruz on the conservative side. Part of the Establishment Group who see this coming weekend and then into tuesday as their best best chance to really stop donald trump and see what the conversation is. Thank you so much for being with us. So we have one Republican Voters here, lynn. What did you think what you heard what donald trump said . I was astounded but i have to say that i guess im not spri z surprised because a lot of interesting and very awful things have surfaced with his conversations, so. Reporter has it changed your mind about who youll vote for . You said youll go to the polls on tuesday. Yes, ill go to the polls. It hasnt necessarily changed because i was not going to vote for donald trump. So im still undecided. I guess depending how the other two candidates react to Something Like this will help make my decision. Reporter so it really matters to you what their response is. Yes. I think staying out of the fray and not making it worse is going to be importantly. Reporter we have two democrats who are here. And kathi and tashal, what did you think when you heard what donald trump had to say . It was typical donald trump that he spits something out and then after he waits 24 hours, then he comes back and he said, thats not what i meant. This is what i meant. And it makes me fearful if he was to become president he would do this with powers of other countries, spit something out and then come back and said, thats not what i meant and then its too late. Reporter you are a democrat but among your friends, do you think this is something that will resonate with them . Yes. I work in education, so most of the people i do work with are democrats. I think womens rights are a big thing with democrats, that we need to make sure that they stay strong and know that women arent going to be pushed around anymore and that we need to take charge and vote our conscience to protect our rights in the long run. Reporter so this is her f t first time voting. Have you been following the campaign closely . I have. Reporter your thoughts about what donald trump had to say yesterd yesterday . It is typical of everything hes basically said so far. He just says whatever just comes on top of his head and comes back the next day and its usually not him apologizing. And i dont think hes ever really apologized. Its his camp that comes and said, this is not what he meant. This is what he meant. I think if youre a president , you need to have some sort of humility and i dont think he actually has that at all. Reporter thank you. How are women like is this reacting . Well find out on tuesday. Chris jansing, thank you so much. Wisconsins women are not the only ones reacting to what they hear from the trump campaign. After Trumps Campaign manager was arrested and charged with simple battery for grabbing a reporter, 16 members called on trump to fire lewandowski. Carol is from the New York Post who signed the statement. Good to have you with us today. Thank you for having me. We want to talk about the letter. But obviously, not long after your letter came out, we had these comments that came out with the town hall, with donald trump and Chris Matthews and now we hear some of his supporters come out with their own messaging. I want to hear. I think he misspoke. There was a misspeak here and you have a president ial candidate that clarified the record. Not once, but twice. We heard it there, twice. At the end of the day, the comments clarified or stick. Whats the story line . This is an unserious candidate. The remarks really reflect that. Sure, he misspoke but what would it take for anyone else to misspe misspeak . And say the craziest thing that comes to his mind. I dont think this is atypical of donald trump and its unfortunate that this is where we are in the campaign where the republican frontrunner can say outlandish things like this and have his supporters just say, it was a misspeak as if thats like he mumbled his words or misspoke on something not as enormous as this. Do you think that will change . Do you think donald trump will change . As you said, people come out and say, it was a misspeak. Surrogates come out. But do you think theres pressure now for that to change, more accountability for these statements . I think the whole thing of let donald be donald. People love hes not a politician. Hes an outsider. He says what he thinks but what he thinks is often not thought through. So you have surrogates like ben carson making the argument, he didnt know he was going to be asked that. As if other candidates are aware of what theyll be asked. Its sad. You were part of a team of women who signed this release. You say the press is to have an adversarial yet civil approach to those in or running for electorate office. Never in this line of work is it acceptable to physical force and you go on to say that the treatment of Michelle Fields by Cory Lewandowski calling it inexcusable and unprofessional, what has the reaction been . Has the campaign weighed in at this point . They havent. And like many other things in this campaign, it starts at the top. When donald trump first heard about this, said it never happened. She made it up and then moved to potentially Michelle Fields was an assassin and then get to a crazy point where his supporters not just Chris Christie types but his regular supporters have to end up arguing that the reporter holding a pen is a dangerous thing as if thats something that doesnt typically happen every day. He sets the standard and the standard has been very low. Donald trump said he will not fire lewandowski. Do you think it would change anything if he got rid of him . It would be a step in the right direction. I dont know it would gloss over his issues, but it would be a step in the right direction towards showing women that he cares that his Campaign Manager put his hands on a female reporter. Appreciate your time today. Thank you so much. For the second day, the Cruz Campaign is trying to press its advantage among women voters. The events follow womens event wednesday with cruz who said there were no specifically womens issues knowing in his words, all issues are womens issues. And also today, scott walker appeared a new ad endorsing ted cruz. Jobs, freedom, security. Thats is what is at stake. Ted cruz is a constitutional conservative. To challenge the status quo and a plan to grow jobs and restore opportunity. Former u. S. Senator is a ted cruz supporter. Nice to have you with us. Thanks for having me, erica. I appreciate it. We have the law poll that the cruz camp is happy to see those numbers yesterday. Are you approaching wisconsin at this point as a potential turning point for the campaign . As a potential what . Im having trouble with the audio. A turning point. Oh, sure. I mean, look, wisconsin is very important. Were not taking anything for granted. Mrs. Cruz is out here. Carly fiorina is here and senator cruz himself working very hard right up until the end. Thats the way we look at it. One state at a time. Thats the way you win. Of course, it is top of mind after Donald Trumps comments yesterday. Ted cruz himself has a very conservative view when it comes to abortion rights. Is there a concern that that being brought up again could impact his female voters . Well, let me just say this. Ive been involved in this issue for 40 years. On the pro life side. I helped to write the partial floor ban and always been a leader on the issue. This has really bizarre what mr. Trump has said. A woman has never been considered, on anybody in the Pro Life Movement considered punishing the woman. I dont know where that came from. Its just, i can only say its bizarre. We believe that the woman should be helped. Shes an important person. Shes bringing the gift of life to an innocent child and we want to give her the dignity she deserves. That is what weve been about. I dont know where these comments but i agree with senator cruz. Just bizarre and we want to help this woman in every way possible with her own indignity and care for her. Ted cruz right now is on the Charlie Sykes show and said it would be a disaster for donald trump to be dominanominated and down ballot impact. This has come up more and more. Is that a concern for you, that a donald trump ticket could negatively affect the number of other house or senate races . I certainly think its possible, yes. These kind of missteps. People talk about how hard Chris Matthews was on donald, you know, he was pretty aggressive, but no disrespect to chris, but, you know, youre going to be faced with these kinds of decisions and, you know, you only get, sometimes one chance to put your foot in your mouth. Youve got to be on top of it. These kind of mistakes, yes. They have the potential to cause Serious Problems up and down the ballot. I think senator cruz is correct and i think voters in wisconsin should be concerned about it as well as across the country. Weve got to nominate somebody who can lead the party, but at the same time, you know, make the issues, bring the issues to the forefront. More jobs, more security, more freedom, all of the things we stand for as conservatives but bring the party, bring the conservatives with us. Without them, the presidency is empty. Weve got to have the support of congress to make our country back. Uniting it is a major thing for all candidates. I want to ask about corey lewandowski. How this has been handled over the last three weeks. Honestly, erica. I know corey. He worked for me in my campaign in 2002. I dont know the circumstances. Ive seen the film. Ive heard the response from corey and mr. Trump. I just am going to leave that to the trump campaign. Thats where it happened. And im just not going to comment on it. Former senator bob smith. Appreciate you joining us today. Thank you. Thank you. More microsoft pulse question, are trump statements on abortion a game changer for his campaign . The pulse is live. You can weigh in now. The democrats going on offense wasting no time hammering donald trump for his comments on abortion. Hillary clinton could continue to hit him on that issue when he takes the stage. He is set to do that any moment in new york. A new quinnipiac poll shows clinton with a 12 point lead over Bernie Sanders state. Its a completely sanders has t upper hand. It tries momentum. In pennsylvania, sanders highlighting an issue. Her record on trade. I have opposed every one of these disastrous trade agreements. Secretary clinton has supported virtually every one of these disastrous trade agreements. My message to Corporate America is that your greed is going to end. Kristen welker and kasie hunt. I want to begin with you, kasie, you heard Bernie Sanders touching on trade. This is a fairly effective message for him. Why is it working so well . If you think about the track record and history of these states, michigan is really the first example we had where the Clinton Campaign got caught flatfooted and how much it was resonating and then pushing it. Its obviously something he talks about and has been talking about for decades. The trade Union Movement. If you look at the way they try to game out the map, wisconsin is a place where this resonates and has a progressive streak in general that helps him. There are places in new york state it could potentially resonate and thats going to become a really critical battleground but if hes able to challenge her in wisconsin and new york, youre going to hit a state like pennsylvania and he was in pittsburgh, obviously, a city that while theyve recovered in many ways and developed an economy in the city and still feeling the effects of the collapse and the industry. Hes still continuing to use against clinton pretty effectively. We see these numbers out of wisconsin for Bernie Sanders making a push there and we have this editorial for the milwaukee journal setting up scathing here calling out Hillary Clinton for horrible track record on transparency going on to say they believe its so serious, we believe it may disqualify her from public office. This is an issue for Hillary Clinton that is not going away. And theres a real focus on the possibility the Clinton Campaign could lose wisconsin. How big of a blow would that be, kristen . Reporter if she lost wisconsin, it would undoubtedly give senator sanders new momentum. The problematic for secretary clinton because its the heart of her biggest vulnerabilities which is trust issues. A number of voters just dont trust her and you have the ongoing headlines about the email issue that would just feed into that. So having said that, erica, the Clinton Campaign bracing themselves for a potential loss in wisconsin as kasie was just discussing here that tend to favor senator sanders. They have a rich labor history. A lot of progressives in wisconsin and a lot of college communities. So all of that plays to senator sanders strength. Thats why you see this big battleground here in new york where secretary clinton served two terms as senator. She is going to be here in purchase and then she launched her senate and trying voters of the work she did to win new york this time around, a loss in new york and her focus is on winning here. And looking at new york, we had nearly 300 delegates in the state of new york. This quinnipiac poll showing Hillary Clinton leading Bernie Sanders 54 to 42. Do you get the sense that this race is tighter or see its a fairly accurate representation . I think that this very much depends on how the dominos fall. Senator sanders clearly has a very narrow path to the nomination and it requires everything to fall in his favor starting with wisconsin. But if that does happen in wisconsin, all bets are off and youll have two weeks of solid campaigning just for new york and the Sanders Campaign argues and the track record has borne out when they focus on one state at a time and put sanders in front of the huge crowds, thousands of people showing up to see him, he can move the numbers and we saw today that raising over 40 million in march, theyll have plenty of money to be on the air. If theyre able to win wisconsin and mount a serious challenge in new york, its entirely possible they could thread this needle. Interesting two weeks no matter what between wisconsin and new york. Kasie hunt and kristen welker, thank you both. Up next, can donald trump stage in wisconsin . Hes down in the polls. Hes going to win the hearts of the states. We are live in South Milwaukee next. Union members throughout wisconsin know the importance of getting people to the polls. Since 2011, unions pushed for a recall of the state Governor Scott walker but were not able to gain enough votes. To tony dokoupil. Good afternoon. Reporter good afternoon. Thats right. This is united Steel Workers in South Milwaukee. Its a union thats been hard hit by economic change. Caterpillar is the big employer in this area and Union Membership at that plant has fallen 75 in recent years. Well look for insights into how thats translating into politics. I want to bring in juan. You are undecided between sanders and clinton but know youre not voting for donald trump. Why . Just seems like he started running, its the race coming up more. You go to places and some people look at you like you dont belong here. Reporter you mean a Mexican American like yourself. Yes. Im looking for the person who likes being, give us the opportunity to be here. Reporter thank you very much, juan. I want to bring in brianne, more of a democratic perspective. She used to be an Assembly Line worker at a Harley Davidson plan and now a union rep for united Steel Workers and on the democratic side, unions have traditionally gone for democrats. Right now, its a bit of a toss huff between sanders and clinton. No endorsement officially not locally or nationally but who are they liking or not liking and why . Fortunately, as i think you stated, we have two strong candidates. Both have spoken in regards to how were going to better the economy by bringing in more jobs by helping with the infrastructure by bringing in jobs that actually create sustaining incomes. So our members are not leaning. You know, im not hearing a strong vibe one way or another towards hillary versus. Reporter bernie, bernie, is what i am hearing. We hear quite a few hoots and hollers for bernie. Rightfully so. Hes spoken out in regards to, you know, putting money into infrastructure, creating good jobs that are sustaining, hillary has as well. So no matter which candidate we end up with, i know that our members will make the right decision. Reporter thank you very much. Back to you in new york. Thank you. Great snapshot there. He may have endorsed an endorsement but with only five days remaining, john kasich is struggling to keep his campaign relevant. By marquette law, has him polling last despite winning one of 33 republican contests, growing calls within the republican parties for kasich to exit the race. The Ohio Governor banking on his positive message to win over voters. Even those who committed to donald trump. Donald trump is clearly not prepared to be president of the united states. Commander in chief, leader of the free world. It takes restraint. It takes judgment. It takes experience. Not wildeyed suggestions to the trump voters. Theres hope. Weve done it before. Putting a Team Together to improve peoples situation including those who have lived in the shadows and secondly, we can do it again. Joining me now, the former governor of wisconsin. John kasich supporter. Good to have you with us this afternoon. Well, good to have you in wisconsin. Welcome. Remotely. We look at some of the new polling, there is a nice jump for john kasich but standing with 21 there. What is the focus at this point for the Kasich Campaign . Is it simply to stop donald trump or is it to still try to find some sort of a path . John kasich is in this to win it. And youre right. There is a nice jump. When you start at a very low with 17 candidates in there, its tough for people to focus on a positive message. Those that are strident, those who say outrageous things are the ones that have the media tension and the certain base. But as the numbers have gone down, people look at who is seriously going to be a good president. John kasich has consistently gained in the polls and in fact, if you look at the polling nationally as to who would do the best job as a republican nominee, john kasich is the only one who consistently in head to head beats the democratic candidates. Thats true. He does have the best polling nationally. As opposed to the other gop candidates. But we look at some of the numbers out of new york with the latest quinnipiac poll and trailing even in new york. So where can he win . I know that he say moving east, it will be more successful. Where will that be specifically . He will be stronger in the east. And of course, new york is trumps home territory. To have a good showing there would be a good sign for john kasich but this is going to go to convention. And i think just about everybody is looking at the planning for that right now. I know the message and i can share a lot of people in wisconsin that i know who are kasich backers think he would be the best person to be president. Want to stop trump. The messaging has been including a lot of independent money is to stop trump, vote for cruz in wisconsin. But this will go. Cruz needs almost 90 of the remaining votes. Thats not going to happen. John kasich, mathematically, cannot do it right now. And donald trump needs almost 50 or 60 of the remaining delegates to be able to have it in the first ballot in the convention. So this most likely is going to convention and then those are the rules. And i think this campaign has been a whole new game in a number of different ways. And how concerned are you about the broader Republican Party . Theyve got a lot of the super delegates. The impact on the Democratic Party is not what we see on the Republican Party in terms of this divisive ness and concern f what could happen at the convention. Are you concerned about the future of the party . No, i am not concerned. I am, if things dont pull together after the primaries, that will be of large concern. Which is one of the reasons that i think john kasich will be the ideal candidate. Hes not split people apart and bring this country together to move forward. Hes got a track record of it and taken tough positions in the past. Hes done it. John kasich is the only one who in ten years would have reduced federal deficit. He can bring people together. That message will resonate in a convention because people running for the senate and running for congress, those running for office will want a winner to bring people together. Former Governor Scott, thank you for being with us today. A small box and now a big box. You get the whole screen. Hillary clinton, speaking of purchase new york and bill clinton off the campaign trail and more from secretary clinton coming up in this hour. In the meantime, Charles Benson is a political reporter of wtmj 4 in milwaukee. This is where you live and the market you cover on a daily basis. We heard from mccallum there a kasich supporter and when we look at the numbers, theres one view. John kasich, for example, is in the state. When you talk to people on the ground, do you find their opinions and their reactions match this polling that were seeing . Reporter the polling was surprising from the standpoint that donald trump didnt show any gains or losses and that ted cruz has surged. The surge coming before Governor Walker even issued his endorsement. But clearly before donald trump ever stepped foot in wisconsin, there were big antitrump forces going on with conservative talk radio. And so in the milwaukee metro market, trump wasnt doing very well. The question is, who was going to be supporting the other candidates throughout the rest of the state . And i think what you are seeing is people trying to coalesce around ted cruz because theyre anti antitrump supporters. You look at the week in talk radio and on tuesday, he comes into town. The Big National Story about his Campaign Manager and then yesterday, the marquette law poll showing him down by 10 points and then the abortion comments hes been trying to walk back. Its been a rough week for donald trump. A good week for ted cruz who was here a week before trying to make inroads. In terms of those comments on abortion that came last night in the town hall on msnbc, how are those playing with voters this morning . Its going to be interesting to see how they do play out in the final few days. Most voters make up their miepdmiepdnds. 70 unfavorable. Those are high negatives. I dont even think the Chicago Bears would have that kind of high negative numbers in a state and the packers and the bears have been playing for a long, long time. So theres a long feud there. But its clearly, people are getting ready here. Monday is opening day. We play baseball on monday. On tuesday, theyre going to be voting. And i think theyre ready. I like the football analogy, by the way. Good one there. Interesting, our own Chris Jansing was speaking with a female republican voter saying she was astounded but not surprised by Donald Trumps comments and knew she was not voting for donald trump and felt that way prior. She was undecided between cruz and kasich and waiting to see what they said and did over the next few days. I think you said a lot of voters are decided but those who are undecided, is there one candidate that seems to hold an edge in connecting to wisconsin voters . You know, thats really hard to sort of measure in terms of where theyre going to go in these final days. I think a lot of people try to figure out if they do vote for kasich, will their vote matter at the end . And of course, john kasich saying if hes out of the race, the nominee will be donald trump. So obviously, people have a lot to think about in these closing days and they look at and Pay Attention to the issues. Wisconsin is a conservative state. A conservative governor, a conservative legislature, a conservative high court. So if there was a state made for ted cruz or john kasich, it would be wisconsin. But clearly, the message coming out of wisconsin right now seems to say, front runners, look out. Were looking at the other candidates right now. Charles benson, political reporter for nbc affiliate wtmj. Thank you. Great to be here. An update on the microsoft pulse question. Are they a game changer for his campaign . Heres a look at the results so far. 40 of you say yes. 60 say no. We want to take you now to purchase new york where Hillary Clinton is speaking. What i regret is they dont want the contrast between my experience, my plans, my vision, what i know i can get done and what my opponent is promising. Ill give you one example. He goes around telling young people hes going to give them free college. I wish it were so, but you go and read the fine print, which anybody should do anyone makes a promise about something being free. You read that fine print and said, yeah, it will be free if the governors of america put in about 28 billion. Were campaigning right now in wisconsin. The governor there has cut Higher Education by 52 million. The idea that he would chip in nearly 300 million for free college in wisconsin doesnt make a lot of sense. It doesnt add up, my friends. But you know, ive talked to some people. Coverage of all the campaigns continues right here on msnbc after a quick break. Stay with us. So im gonna take this opportunity to direct. Im not going to take it off the table. You might use it in europe . No, i dont think so. Im not taking cards off the table. Their own Nuclear Arsenals and withdrawing u. S. Troops throughout the region and in an exclusive interview with rachel maddow, Hillary Clinton expressed her concern with trumps Foreign Policy. This idea hes been putting out recently that we should withdraw from the pacific. So were no longer a pacific power. Were no longer fulfilling our treaty obligations to japan, south korea and others and said off the cuff, let them have Nuclear Weapons so wed have an arms race under his theory not just in the middle east, but also in asia. I have no idea what that means other than it scares me. In the meantime, president obama is set to convene with leaders with more than 50 countries for the final Nuclear Summit and joining me now, msnbc contributor and former u. S. Ambassador. Good to have you with us, as always. Give us a sense on the campaign trail with comments from donald trump in the town hall on msnbc last night. How are those being received in other countries . Well, its a real schizophrenic message. On the one hand, donald trump is saying nato is obsolete and hell pull back from asia, and on the other hand, hes talking rather loosely and casually about using Nuclear Weapons in places like the middle east and europe. And i just got back from a trip and partners in japan, nato partners, theres a nervousness that this on this pulling back is going to lead to instability in both europe and asia. In an op ed in the Washington Post president obama talked about the u. S. Role when it comes to Nuclear Security talked about the arsenal here in the u. S. And also went on to say it is this countrys, in his words, moral obligation to continue to lead wait in eliminating them. How much is that a focus when it comes to Nuclear Policy moving forward . The containment and even the elimination of current stockpiles . President obama put forth a very ambitious agenda to try to eliminate Nuclear Weapons in the world but he also says its not going to happen for decades to come.
