Department of public health. The individual is a resident of Solano County in california and is receiving medical care in sacramento county. The cdc is apparently doing Contact Tracing to figure out who else might have been exposed since they had it. We will see you tomorrow. Now its time for the last word. At the end of that press conference, alex aczar did a very good job insisting he is very happy that mike pence is now kind of on top of this, because he insisted that mike pence can help make all these various departments of government work, which would be true if mike pence is actually good at that and were not aware of any evidence that indicates that. It is nice that mike pence has a job. Up like other Vice President s, he hasnt been given an obvious thing to do in this administration. This is kind of the first thing they have given him in year four of the trump administration. I am comforted by the fact that mike pence appears to cover a normal staffing zo situation and policy process. At least he appears to have staffers he doesnt fire every three days like the president does. The idea that he is sort of uniquely suited to and alex aczar didnt know about the announcement until he stepped up to the podium doesnt inspire confidence. He gave the oboll la crisis, he gave the mike pence job to ron clain. He will join us tonight. Ro sanaa or yet will join us tonight. Harvey weinstein is awaiting sentencing in new york before facing trial in los angeles, thanks, in part, to ro sanaa arquette who did not testify but did tell her story about Harvey Weinstein, in that first week to ronan farrow, who published it in the new yorker twoandahalf years ago. That forced prosecutors in new york to take the accusations seriously. She was one of the most famous actresses who came forward and in a fameobsessed country and the fameobsessed town of los angeles, the fame of the actresses did, in fact, add weight to the charges. Ro sanaa arquette will join us with her reaction to what she thought she was never going to see, Harvey Weinstein convicted of rape and Sexual Assault charges. But first we begin with the president ial campaign in the final days before the South Carolina primary on saturday. Pete buttigieg delete a tweet yesterday mocking quote nostalgia for the revolutionary politics for the 1960s, presumably, Pete Buttigieg, who is born in 1982 delete that tweet after someone told him the revolutionary politics of the 1960s represent the single most hon abl, most important and dangerous period of protest in the 20th century. People were being killed then because they participated in civil rights protests. People were being killed because they helped black people register to vote in the south. People were being killed for protesting the vietnam war at Kent State University in ohio and in 1968 at the historically black college of south clone state. The Highway Patrol shot and killed three students and wounded 27 in one of the most horrific actions in that very brave period of the 1960s. And the 1970s that Pete Buttigieg now realizes he should not mock. James clyburn went to South Carolina state, where he met his wife in 1970. He didnt meet her on the campus. He met her in jail and he told that story today. We most on campus from march 15th, 60 years ago. I will always remember that day, because that was the first day that i was arrested. And i met her in jail on that day. About 18 months later, we were married p. We have been married for 58 years. We talked about this day that we love so much. I remember telling me about her experiences, walked twoandahalf miles to school every morning. Twoandahalf miles back home, every afternoon. Little 22acre farm. We talked about what our parents sacrificed for us and what we owed to our children and all of our children, similarly situated. We often talked about the leadership of this country and there is nobody who loved as a leader in this country more than he loved joe biden. And he talked about joe all the time. Joe clyburns wife emily died last year. She was almost as present at todays endorsement as she would have been if she were still with us and standing right beside her husband. We knew jim clyburn was going to endorse joe biden today. We did not know the depth of emotion he would feel and down into indicate abocommunicate th endorsement. He told about richardland county and described his association with a woman he called an elderly lady in her upper 80s. That was his phrase. Now you have to be at least if your upper 80s for jim clyburn to consider you elderly, because he is 79yearsold. Heres what that elderly lady said to jim clyburn. She beckoned to me, didnt say a word, just beckoned. I went over to her, she says lean down. I need to ask you a question. And i leaned down and she said you dont have to say it out loud. But you just whisper in my ear would have are you financial to vote for next saturday . I have been waiting to hear from you. I need to hear from you p. This Community Wants to hear from you. I decided then and there that i would not stay silent. And i have been saying to the media. I have known for a long time who i would vote for. But i had not decided the or shared it with the public, but i want the public to know that im voting for joe biden, South Carolina should be reporting for joe biden. Jim clyburn is the highest ranking democrat. His endorsement is the singlemost sought after endorsement. Most endorsements dont mean much. They really dont. But that elderly lady isnt the only South Carolina voter who wa wants to hear from jim clyburn, 40 years ago, he enforced Hillary Clinton a week before the South Carolina primary, which she then won 73 to Bernie Sanders 26 . Jim clyburn endorsed joe kerry. Which he won 61 to 19 ore neighboring senator john edwards. Jim clyburns endorsement covered some areas with joe biden. He expressed his trust in joe biden this week. I know joe. We know joe. But most importantly joe knows us. In the end, for jim clyburn, it all came down to joe and emily. I know his heart. I know who he is, what he is. I know what his temper is. We are at an inflexion point on that day that i met him, i went to jail about 10 00 in the morning and i was discharged from jamie, bailed out around 5 30 in the evening. When i sat in jail that day, i wondered whether or not we were doing the right thing. But i was never fearful for the future as i stand before you today. I am fearful for the future of this country. I am fearful for my daughters and their futures and their children and their childrens future. I can think no one better suited, better prepared. I can think of no one that the integrity, no one more committed to the fundamental principles to make this country what it is than my good friend, my late wifes great friend. Joe biden. P. Joining us now is the honorable james clyburn, congressman from South Carolina and the House Majority whip. Thank you very much for making time for us tonight. I appreciate it. I know it has been a busy day. I was really struck about the emotion you brought to that endorsement today, wiping away tears a couple of times and it sounded like an endorsement of two clyburns, emily managed to do an endorsement through you today. Thank you so much for having me and youre right, she did. The fact of the matter is ava and i talked about this grace before she passed away. We even talked about the fact that our pursuit for joe and our differences eastern though a grandson who is working in another campaign and we told him to be comfortable in what he was doing and we would support what he was doing, but in all probability, well be voting for a different person. And so i thought it was important for me to bring emily into the conversation today because you are correct, if she were here, she would have been standing with me and she would have been, she wouldnt have said a word. But you can tell from her look and the way she would embrace joe for what she was feeling. So this day was as much for her as it was and is for our children and our grandchildren. Congressman, there is a few ad out in South Carolina put out by the Trump Campaign and a trump super pac using audio of barack obama that they have stolen from the audio recording of his old book and theyre trying to use sound from that book as if it was directed as a negative comment about joe biden. Did you expect this kind of really crazy lastminute advertising against joe biden from republicans in South Carolina . Well, let me be clear, my father and mother were republicans. My father believed in the party of lincoln. He would not recognize this party today. The Republican Party has been taken over by folks who seem to have low integrity about the political process, seem to have low compassion for those seem not to have any regards for the truth. They seem to be willing to do anything to disparage an opponent. They seem to enjoy that more than winning a victory in the election. So, no, im not surprised. What i am surprised at, though, is there are so many of my republican colleagues seem to accept that. Not think about the state of the union address, but the president of the United States telling what the Washington Post said was at least 31 lies in his speech and over half of them my republican colleagues were standing on their feet cheering knowing full well it was not the truth. This country as i said today is at an inflexion point i hope we come to our senses, disagree but we dont have to be disagreeable, eight years if he agreed on everything, but we wouldnt allow 58 years if he were disagreeable every time we disagreed. And so i would hope that we can have a campaign. A campaign appealing to the best thats in our people. Appealing to the future of our children and grandchildren and doing everything to maintain the integrity of this country. I have been saying this is a great country. It doesnt have to be made great again. What weve got to do is make this countrys greatness accessible and affordable for all of its citizens. Thats what i want this campaign to be about and i dont think we can get there by misrepresenting and modifying peoples positions and speech. Congressman clyburn, i know there is always a tremendous amount of pressure on your endorsement, the famous bill clinton calling you in the mild of the night livid at you for not endorsing Hillary Clinton in 2008. A crucial win for him on the way to the nomination. This time, what was the pressure like and what was it like not having emily to lean on during that pressure . Well, the pressure was great. And not because i was you know unsure of what i wanted to do. But the pressure was great because i was there trying to keep my word to my party, my state party, that i would not do or say anything that would take away from the viability of our primary and they told me, they thought that i got out real early in the contest, tipped sides that maybe the other candidates would not come and would not do honor for our primary. That was pressure. That was pressure to stay quiet until after the debate because we wanted to have a televised debate and i promised the network that i would not get out in front of them. But all of that went away when that lady beckoned to me and asked me to lean down and whisper in her ear, because she wanted to hear from me. She assured me people in that community wanted to hear from me. All of that went away because i thought on that moment about what Martin Luther king, jr. , wrote in the letter in jail when he wrote these words, that he was coming to the conclusion that the people of ill will in our society was making a much better use of time than the people of good will and he thought that we were going to be made to repent, not just for the it have troll vitriol and deeds of bad people but the appalling silence of good people so i thought about that and decided to break my silence. Congressman james clyburn, always an honor to have you join us. We really appreciate you making time for us tonight. Thank you. Thank you. Coming up, the president held a press conference on the white house tonight about the spread of the coronavirus. The president offered his opinion about the spread of the virus in the United States. Not surprisingly, he was immediately contradicted by one of the experts the president invited to the press conference but did not listen to. President obama put ron clain in charge of the ebola crisis. He joins us next. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. We do it every night. Every night. I live alone, but i still do it every night. Right after dinner. Definitely after meatloaf. Like clockwork. Do it run your dishwasher every night with cascade platinum. A load with as few as 8 dishes, is all it takes to save water. An Energy Star Certified dishwasher uses less than four gallons per cycle. While handwashing uses that, every two minutes. So, do it. Run your dishwasher every night with cascade platinum. The surprising way to save water. [ fastpaced drumming ]. One day after the centers for disease prevention warned the coronavirus in the United States is inevitable, inevitable, the president held a press conference with cdc experts present and said this. I also think, no, i dont think its inevitable. An hour before that, the latest case of coronavirus index was reported in california. The cdc said it is the first case of the coronavirus in a person who did not recently return from a foreign country or have contact with a confirmed case, according to a person briefed on the case. A sign the virus may be spreading in that local area. The president gave the world a false hope of a vaccine being available fairly rapidly. The vaccine is coming along well and in speaking to the doctors, we think this is something we can develop fairly rapidly, a vaccine. Dr. Anthony fauci, one of the director of algae and Infectious Diseases to step up to the microphone and patriot real time frame on a possible vaccine. I just want to give you a very quick update on the my name is dr. Tony fauci, im the director of allergy and Infectious Disease at nih. A quick update in the countervaccines therapeutics. I had told this audience at a recent press briefing. We have a number of candidates and one prototype to give you a feel for the time frame of a vaccine and what its impact might be now and in subsequent years is that i told you we would have a vaccine that we would be putting into trials to see if its safe and if it induces a response you would predict would be to effective in three months. I think it will be less than that it will probably be closer to two months. That would take two months to determine if its safe, which gives us six months. Then you gra ut from a trial which is phase i of 45 people to a trial that involves hundreds, if not low thousands of people to determine efficacy. At the earliest an efficacy trial would take an additional 6toeight month, although this is the fastest we have gone from a sequence of a virus to a trial, it still would not be any applicable to the epidemic, unless we really wait about a year to a yearandahalf. Leading off our discussion tonight, ron clain, who was put in charge of the federal governments response to the ebola virus by president obama in 2014. Also joining us, lori garrett, Pulitzer Prize reporter covering global pandemics. Ron, with you, both of are you such experts on this subject, i dont pretend to guide your focusing. Your reaction at the white house and where this virus is it the. Well, you saw the president as you mentioned, laurms, contradict the nation dr. Fauci, the doctor from the center of Disease Control was there, contradict them on the likelihood of this disease spreading to the United States. Contradicted them on the pace of vaccine development, contradict him on donald trump used the past tense to describe the virus. I think our threat is in the future tense, contradicted himself on the travel restrictions he put in place, mislead the people with the travel restrictions he put in place. I think putting the Vice President in charge doesnt really move the needle one way or another if the president continues to contradict scientific advice and focus singularly not on the safety and health of the American People but talk the stockmarket back up. I think his strategy has been happy tweets to talk up the market. Not really preparing our country to deal with this problem we will face. Lauren, the only thing i can know, is completely ignore every word by mr. Donald trump and listen to fauci and which i played his response in number. What do you think America Needs to know tonight . First of all, the case in california is very distressing. This is in a rural area, an individual that never traflsz. How did this person get infected . It implies there are cases out there, its shocking 426 americans have been tested for infection. If you compare that to south korea right now, there are over 35,000 peoplive that tested and the more they test, the more cases they find that have no symptoms that were missed or have mild symptoms. We dont real le know whats going on in america at the moment. What we need at the helm is somebody that gets that scenes, who understands the subtleties. Ron clain got the subtleties in the white house. Thank god you were there, ron. But putting mike pence in charge. Lets not forget, this is a guy as governor of indiana said that because of his belief, no one getting infected with hiv or to block infection with hiv should have access to sterile syringes right when the Opioid Crisis was exploding in any. By estimates done bypy dear friend Greg Gonzalez at yale university, that caused 250 unnecessary infections and people leading into hepatitis or hiv in any. Because he was id logically opposed to allowing them to have safe use of drugs. Ron, the president was asked tonight about why his bucket proposal proposed a cut in cdc funding and im going to shorten his answer for time. He basically said he didnt want to waste money there and you can hire people when you needed them when there was a kreefs . Yeah. So, wrong, wrong an wrong. Look, i this they we made a lot of investments during the Ebola Response but to prepare our country for the kind of situation, a future academic threat. Since he came to office, he wiped out the office for endemic response and cut funding to centers for Disease Control and tried to cut many Times Research at the neh. You notice his most recent budget submitted after this outbreak proposed to cut the centres for Disease Control again. Hes shown all the wrong instinct every step of the way. That is very problematic here. Right. We need a president as lori said to step up and listen to the medical experts. Thats the big problem we have here. Donald trump doesnt need took medical expert, mike pence doesnt need to be a medical expert. Pence ignored scientific advice in indiana hiv on his watch. Will pence listen to those experts now . This is not a partisan issue. Tony fauci, served democratic president s, republican president s. This should be power and evidence. I would add were at the easy stage right now. This is the easy stuff. Just wait. When it starts to be humantohuman transmission in clusters around america. When you start to have healthcare workers. I have been reading this absolutely heart wrenching plea from the nurses in wuhan china saying we wake up every day in stark terror. We are psychologically distressed. We cant help to cry day to day. We need for more nurses and doctors we have in america. The hard part is when they are exhausted, when this is going through the hallways of hospitals. Is mike pence the guy who understands how to lead us through that . Lori garrett, ron clain, we will need to hear from you. We praesht you joining us. Coming up, two days left, John Heilemann joins us tonight live from South Carolina with the latest developments in the race including that lying republican ad against joe biden that has Barack Obamas lawyers sending cease and desist lawyers to South Carolina tv stations. All the polls before last nights debate show joe biden in the lead with an average lead of ten points. The other leading candidates tried to close that gap today in South Carolina. When we stand together, we make profound change. That is the history of the civil rights movement, millions of people standing up for justice. This call is not for empty promises. This call is not for vague ideas. This call is forbe real plans to make real changes in the lives and communities of people, across this country. And part of what the presidency in the right hand could do is bring us together as one American People, as one body. We have to win. We have to stop this injustice. We have to beat donald trump and the way we do it is fire up a democratic base, which has always been rooted in the africanamerican community. Joining us from South Carolina, John Heilemann, a National Affairs analyst around cohost of the circus and editorinchief of the recap. John, the polls were strongly favoring biden before the debate. You have to wonder what happened in that debate to change that. Is it your sense, are you picking up from voters in South Carolina that the debate is much of a factor in this race as we approach saturdays voteing . Yeah, my sense, lawrence, is the debate will matter. My sense t is the debate will reenforce the reality on the ground which is to say joe biden came in with a strong position and out of the debate in a stronger position, manly if that mess, that scrum that was mainly in that mess, that scrum that was the debate, one the gun issue tying to emanuel just steps away from the site of the debate the other night and hitting bernie on his votes on the brady bill and raising this question about bernie having been contemplating, exploring the possibility of a primary as barack obama if 2012. Something sanders denied. We have tape suggesting in fact he did. I think bernie did not answer that question on the debate stage. Its not gone unnoticed by africanamerican voters he let that slide. I think joe biden on those two fronts with the main constituency that matters here, arkin americans, i think he reenforced the position. There is not a black voter surrogate even for other candidates right now who i talked to who doesnt think joe biden will within this race. The only question is by how much. I dont want to show this ad that the republicans bought in South Carolina. It is a complete crime against voters and it uses Barack Obamas voice stolen from his audio book 25yearold book dreams from my father. Heels not talking about joe bind at all, he is talking about politician, a character he is quoting talking how they neglected the black community and the trump people tried to turn that into barack obama speak against joe biden. First have people been fooled by this ad . Have the tv stations taken it down . Its not airing. Ive fought seen it. Im not going to suggest it hasnt been on the air anywhere. But its not broken through here, lawrence. And i would Say Something i know you know, africanamerican voters are not just the most important constituency in the democratic party, they are among the most sophisticated voters. South clone voters have seen a few dirty tricks in their time. Theyre not naive or easily fooled. I dont think there is much chance this obvious chicanerry to change the votes on the ground. Im not predicting joe biden is going to when. Im telling you though win talked into the most pluggedin african politicians here, thats what they think. I think Bernie Sanders could still do considerably better with African Americans than four years ago when he did abysmally. That would be significant if he does not win. If its a narrow race and sanders breaks through to some extent, that can be important for sanders candidacy as we move forward into super tuesday and the diverse states that will be competing a little less than today. What are you looking for the candidates who are probably going to be pulling up behind joe biden and Bernie Sanders . I think its a really important question right now is who gets out of this race after saturday night . And i think you know there has been a prisoner dilemma quality to this, where candidates have been wanting to stick around. They thought they had rational, reasons. I think some of these candidates may perform poorly enough that it brings some clarity to them. We may see one or more of them drop out in the immediate after math after South Carolina, soup were important Going Forward into super tuesday. John heilemann, thank you very much, i really appreciate it. Thanks. Coming up, Harvey Weinstein is in a prisoners ward after being convicted of Sexual Assault and rape by a manhattan jury. That is a quote from the first paragraph of ronan farrows first report of Harvey Weinstein in the new yorker. It came out five days after he delivered the initial reporting on Harvey Weinsteins sex crimes. All three of those reporters deservedly shared the Pulitzer Prize and tonight Harvey Weinstein is in the jail ward in new york city where he is being monitored after complaining of chest pains an high Blood Pressure after he was apparently shocked by a jury unanimously finding him guilty of Sexual Assault and rape. He faces a possible fiveto29 years in prison. He will then stand trial in los angeles, where he is facing multiple Sexual Assault charges yesterday. Weinsteins lawyers who visited yesterday said he is somewhat flabbergasted by the verdict. He doesnt know how this happened. Hundreds of women, thousands of women know exactly how this happened, because they had similar encounters with Harvey Weinstein in his over 30 years as a relentless and vicious sexual predator. Rosanna arquette knows how this happened. She went public. Ronan farrow wrote, one evening in the early 90s, the actress ro san that arquette was supposed to meet weinstein for dinner at the Beverly Hills hotel to pick up a new script. Arquette recalled that when she arrived at the room, he was wearing a white bathrobe. He said his neck was sore and he grabbed my hand and when she yanked it away, he pulled it towards his penis which was invisible and erect. My heart was really racing. I was in a fight or flight moment. She told weinsteinly never do that weinstein told her that she was making a huge mistake by rejecting him, and named an actress and a modem who he claimed had given in to his sexual overtures and whose careers he said he had advanced, ill never be that girl. Her career suffered. In one case she believes she lost a role because of it. He made things difficult for years. She said her silence was the result of weinsteins power and reputation for vindictiveness, he will be working to track people down and silence people she explained to hurt people. Thats what he does. Not anymore. Not anymore, thanks to the brave raised voice of Rosanna Arquette and the accidence of other with imwho came forward to tell their stories, including the women who told their stories convincingly to a jury in new york city. Rosanna arquette joins us next. [wood rolling] alexios, add toilet paper to the shopping list. [chiseling on stone] oh, and camel milk. And a chicken. And moisturizer. Alexa thanks, guys. Yesterday ro san arquette and other victims gathered at Los Angeles City hall close to the courthouse where Harvey Weinstein will face his next trial for rape. Heres some of what she had to say. Today is truly a landmark moment for survivors of rape and Sexual Assault in that the public is seeing that men even a man as powerful and famous as weinstein will be held accountable for their abuse of women. Now we know that if we dare to speak there is a far greater chance we will be heard and our abusers will be punished. This seismic cultural change that began twoandahalf years ago has been brought to a legal conclusion, to justice. Think about that. I want you to take this in. It is a historic shift that i never thought i would see in my lifetime. I want to be clear we are here to hold space for all women and children and men for the brave women who have testified at this trial, who went through their own personal to bring us to this moment of justice. Joining us now actor, director, activist Rosanna Arquette. Thank you very much for joining us tonight. Im sorry this is the subject are you here for, but its been helpful for a lot of people as you know . Thank you, thank you for your support from the very beginning and your incredible journalism every day, telling the truth. You and rachel are extraordinary human beings. And inthank you so much. Rosanna, you said yesterday that you never thought you would see this i think based on what i heard you say and read you say about this in the past, i dont think you ever expected Harvey Weinstein was going to be in handcuffs because of this . The way it was going and the dirty tactics that you know the attorneys were doing in the courtroom, victim blaming, shaming, it didnt look like it was going to happen, so its extraordinary that it did. But having said that i mean, jail time for him is not really justice for rape survivors. Even though its something. Theyre going to live for the rest of their lives with this horrible trauma that happened to them. But he is a convicted rapist and he is in hospital and im sorry that hes not feeling well and his health isnt good. But you know he does need to be in jail. Hes a convicted rapist and hopefully, hes not getting special attention because hes rich and powerful and white and because and because you know hes contributed to the Governors Campaign and sy vans. He really needs to go to jail. Thats what i hope is happening, hes been convicted. Thats the right thing to do. Ill never forget reading the description of what happened to you in that hotel room with Harvey Weinstein in ronans article, i know you and i met many years ago in l. A. It also has that resonance i know this person i am reading about in this room. Did you realize that the weight of your career was on the line and when you were, he was trying to make you feel that by giving you these examples and trying to convince you that other people have gone along with this and its helped them . Did you realize this could mean he was going to block from you getting roles and everything that he did do . I knew it immediately as i went down the elevator. I just knew it. I said, oh my god and i was right. I was right. Yes, i am in pulp fiction, which happened after the incident and Quentin Tarantino asked me to do the movie. I am the only person that doesnt have a back end in the film. I wok for nothing. They make a tremendous amount of money. Anyways, it is what it is.
