And as senator mcconnell might say, youve been warned. Unusually strong criticism tonight from President Trumps own Supreme Court nominee neil gorsuch. He is disheartened by the demoralizing and abhorrent comments made by President Trump. The not understanding of the separation of powers within our government should be of concern to every american. The Senate Voting to confirm Jeff Sessions for attorney general after a bitter 24 hours. The facts may hurt, but were not in the United States senate to ignore fax. Elizabeth warren takes to the floor. It drives the republicans Blood Pressure through the roof. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted. We are the party of opposition. And that is our job. Be like liz, resist, resist according to a new poll, 54 of americans disapprove of the job President Trump is doing, or as betsy devos calls that, 1 3. One of the most famous political ads of the modern era came out in 2008 posing the question who can handle the awesome responsibility of the presidency . Who is ready for that phone call about a National Security emergency in the middle of the night . Its 3 00 a. M. And your children are safe and asleep. But there is a phone in the white house and its ringing. Something is happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call. Its 3 00 a. M. And your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone . Im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. That provocative clinton ad envisioned someone with bad news placing a call to the white house. But what happens when the call is coming from inside the white house . Listen to me. Weve traced a call. Its coming from inside the house and a squad car is going up there right now. Just get out of that house. As every horror movie proves, you never, ever want to get that call from inside the house. But something along those lines has begun in the trump white house. President trump recently placing a 3 00 a. M. Call to his National Security adviser, although thankfully it was not a real middle of the night emergency. The president called his adviser mike flynn to ask about the u. S. Dollars position in the global economy. The Huffington Post reports he asked whether it would be good to have a strong or weak dollar. Quote, flynn told trump he didnt know, that it wasnt his area of expertise. That perhaps trump should ask an economist instead. Two sources told the post. Trump was not thrilled with that response, but it may have been a function of the time of day. Trump had placed the call at 3 00 a. M. According to one of flynns retells. The president had a basic Economic Policy question but felt it must be answered in the middle of the night and by a military strategist. Washington sources say this story suggests trump is still on the uphill part of the president ial learning curve. That view is reinforced by another report also based on leaks from inside the white house. About trumps call with french president francois hollande. A Senior Analyst telling politico trump used the exchange to vent about his personal fixations. Its not the way the head of states speak to each other, and the conversation was not completely organized said the source. Also speaking of slogans tonight, trump found time today within 20 minutes of his morning intelligence briefing to weigh in on some family buness issues, tweeting about a Department Store that is discontinuing his daughters apparel line. My daughter ivanka has been treated so unfairly by nordstrom. She is a great person, always pushing me to do the right thing. Terrible, exclamation point. Today some ethics experts argue that tweet is unseemly and might even give businesses grounds to sue the president. But lets be clear. The president has wide Legal Authority to say what he wants. The issue isnt that he is violating a law, but rather when you remember this, violating his own pledge. In President Trumps only press Conference Since winning the election, he said he would completely step away interest his businesses and leave them to his children to run, that he would not be involved. Today he showed how long he could publically keep that pledge 19 days. And thats how involved trump is willing to be with the Family Business in public. What else is he doing in private . Joining me now is olivia newsy, washington correspondent. And katherine rample, opinion columnist for the washington post. Katherine, what do you make of any of that is my opening question . Okay. So a few observation. Trump says he believes in a few markets. Its a very funny conception of free markets to say you should be able to bully companies into where they should locate and what they should sell which is what trump was doing with this tweet when he was getting on nordstroms case for no longer stock ivanka trumps brands. Another observation is that if your entire premise for the pridential campaign was that chinese currency manipulation is deroying the u. S. Economy, it seems sort of crucial to know in which direction that currency manipulation is happening. It is making the dollar look stronger or weaker, something he apparently doesnt know. He seems to have some issues focusing. And then the other question is who is leaking all of this information. Right. And how rattled must they be to be leaking information about what the president of the United States is doing at 3 00 a. M. Youre a longtime observer. Why do you think were getting this many leaks . Well, because i think people in the white house believe that the way to send a message to the president is through the media. And i do think there might be some people who are disturbed about all of this. You think theyre leak shaming him . That may be one poshl possible theory. The other is oh my goodness, you understand what is happening here, what the president is doing. Someone needs to do something to intervene. But i dont know. I dont know about the 3 00 a. M. Call. But on the tweeting to nordstroms, the use of the power of the presidency to advance a Family Business, this is not a gray ethical area, this is a bright line. And the fact that he would do this with all the other things going on in the world has got to be really kind of concerning. Olivia, on the point about business, one of the big arguments from trumps supporters throughout the campaign was he has done all these things in his private life for commerce, and he will now bring that attitude and vigilance on behalf of the american job market, american consumers. Thats a pitch i heard a lot when i was out on the trail talking to trump supporters. What is concerning to some is that vigilance is still being deployed pon on behalf of nonamerica, or just the trump business line or the apparel line at nordstrom. Right. I want to be really clear here. The president of the United States attacked an American Company today on behalf of one of his Family Businesses that as you noted he promised on january 11th he would no longer have any stake in or any involvement in. So this is i think an unprecedented situation. But beyond that, i think what were see hearing in all of these story, whether its flynn or what happened with the nordstrom tweet today is the total chaos in the white house there is a lot of talk about other people pulling the springs behind the scenes, and that may be true. But i think that the real story here is that donald trump does what he wants to do, and he says what he wants to say when he wants to do it and when he wants to say it. This is a completely chaotic situation that were seeing unfold here. Take a listen, catherine, to a brief exchange in the press Conference Today with sean spicer about, again, the timing. What little we know is that he was coming out of allegedly his security briefing. Take a listen. Sean, to actually clarify that, the timing of that tweet, it looked like it was right after president pv. Ive heard the conjecture. He was free when that happened. Or maybe he wasnt listening that carefully or maybe he cut the briefing short . Who knows. There are many possible explanations for what might account for what happened. None of them are acceptable. And there is other things. This culture of intimidation that he seems to be embracing rather openly. He is talking about destroying the political career of a senator yesterday, the reports targeting jake tapper for asking tough question, bullying american companies. This is a pattern of this administration. I think he is going to find that it is going to be a tougher to bully federal judges than it is to bully, for example, nordstrom. And this goes, again, to figuring out what is going on. It has become very popular to say everything he is doing is a distraction. Right. So if we cover the nordstrom tweet, oh, well youre missing this other story. If we dont cover the nordstrom tweet, youre missing the ongoing business was his taxes or other companies. There is a lot to cover. I think over the course of this early period it does not necessarily anear this is a master strategy session. That there is strategy at all going on. And its always think about what you kno and some of what i know in following the legal cases is they have literally done things like reversed themselves on the greencard position on the travel ban in ways that have hurt their case. In this case, what is all the bullying for, sore it just to have it . Yes. Can he just not help himself . Is there anyone that is telling him, hey, you know what . Put out another tweet. Give another speech where you ridicule federal judge, federal judges who right now are zwliegd theyre going to limit executive power because thats going to work out well for you. Who would be giving him the advice. Can you go in and tell the president that maybe we talk about socalled judges or that we talk about how disgraceful a rather substantive decision before the 9th circuit was . Federal judges are human beings. And this is not playing the refs. This is a guy that has no impulse control. Right. Olivia, you spent a lot of time covering some of the people in this orbit, including Chris Christie who was considered one of the more experienced governmental officials who had gotten involved. Of course he is not in the white house at this juncture. Do you have a sense from your its unclear. You see people like Chris Christie, for instance, coming out in the New York Times this week in a piece by glen thresh and maggie hibberman to criticize the Trump Administration. Theyre doing that to get through to president because they know one of the best ways to get through to him is on television or do it in the New York Times or in a prominent magazine. So when you read quotes like that, it just seems like those people are trying to have influence in a different way because maybe the president is no longer returning their carroll, yeah, catherine, weve heard that a lot. And Kellyanne Conway has said it bluntly. She sa that metimes if you cant get his attention a meeting, you go on tv and say the same thing and then he hears you, right, which is highly unusual. But again, with regard to the leaking that is so unusual, and by the way, journalists tend to love these. Of course, of course. Washington post, the New York Times, weve gotten a lot of interesting things out of this. But if the motivation is to reach someone who is already unreachable, that does raise questions about how he is managing. I also wonder to what extent these leaks are coming out because people want to prove to the world that they are giving different advice than what the president is acting on. Taking their brand. So that theyre not to blame, essentially, when trump pops off, or does something to insult a foreign leader or whatever the case play be. Hey, this is what we did. This is what we stood for. Its not our fault. The other story i want to get to that we covered last night and i want to return to is senator mccain discussing that raid in yemen. And i want to be clear, there is a lot we dont know about it. But what we do know is somewhat problematic. And again, in a different environment, one can imagine president obama having this type of raid and how quickly the hearing would start. Take a listen to senator mccains view here. When you lose a 75 million airplane, and more importantly american lives a life is lost and wounded, i dont believe that you can call it a success. Is there anything to learn here about the president s approach to the middle east or socalled getting tough with this raid . From what we understand at least didnt achieve the target in terms of al qaeda target . Well, the president is going have to learn to ask the tough questions. He is going to have to understand, be able to evaluate the information that is brought to him by the military and his security people before he pulls the trigger. But also the quickness to label everything a success. Everything is wonderful. Everything is fantastic, but you have a dead american. See, this is where you have donald trump coming up against reality. The reality of his duties. And hype wont always carry the day. Right. Catherine, its not fake news. Negative, when you report on what happened in this raid. No. And i also thought it was relatively gracious starting out for spicer to have said, as you may recall a while back that we cannot call this a fullblown success, an unalloyed success because an American Life was lost. I thought that was a lovely sentiment coming from the white house, given this impulse instead to call everything a success regardless of what the actual facts on the ground. Right. He did say that and that was interesting. And then reversed himself. We can play sean spicer here. And then later saying it was a disservice to say anything else. The action that was taken in yemen was a huge success. American lives will be saved because of it. Future attacks will be prevented. The life of chief ryan owens was done in service to this country, and we owe him and his family a great debt for the information that we received during that raid. I think any suggestion otherwise is a disservice to his courageous life and the actions that he took. Olivia, you go to these briefings. You see what he is struggling to do there. I dont want to grade him unfairly. And this starts at the top and a decision and not necessarily how he is selling or unselling it. What did you make of his struggle to figure out how he want to say there. Well, the fish rots from the head, youre right. But i think its pretty rich to hear that coming from the white house when President Trump, if you remember, has been very critical of say the results of the iraq war. Was it a disservice for President Trump to criticize the results of the iraq war . I think thats a fair question now for the white house, and maybe thre going have to to answer that tomorrow. A right, olivia nuzzi, thank you. She is the only one Mitch Mcconnell has censured as of late. Also up next, senator Richard Blumenthal joins me to discuss donald Trumps Supreme Court nominee, his feelings and assertion about what donald trump is doing regarding the judiciary. Thats up ahead. Coming up, democratic senator Richard Blumenthal on what Supreme Court nominee neil gorsuch discussed with him today about Donald Trumps attacks on the federal judiciary that is next. Donald trumps presidency has sparked many discussions about what is normal and what is not and whether even well meaning people are normalizing things that are not normal. Well, here is one thing that is normal. President s voicing their disagreement with judges who oversee the executive branch. When the Supreme Court rejected parts of george w. Bushs detention policy, he said he disagreed with the ruling while he would follow it. When the Court Allowed more money in politics in the Citizens United case, barack obama criticized the justices to their face, telling them during his state of the Union Address that they reversed a century of law. When President Trump disagrees with judges overseeing his travel ban, that is fairly normal. I dont ever want to call a court biased, so i wont call it biased. And we havent had a decision yet. But courts seem to be so political. And it would be so great for our Justice System if they would be able to read a statement and do whats right. But here is what is not normal. The president blaming a judge for potential terror attacks that have not happened, or the president saying the opinion of this socalled judge takes Law Enforcement away from our country. Just stop and think about that for a moment. In the u. S. , Law Enforcement is overseen by independent judges. That is literally what makes it law Law Enforcement. Now as trump makes these attacks, he is also asking the senate to confirm his choice for the most Important Court ithe land, judge neil gorsuch. Many are wondering what judge gorsuch makes of all this, especially since his job if confirmed is to oversee President Trumps executive actions with no bias or favoritism to the president who promoted him. Tonight we have a special guest who is one of the only people in the country right now who might know the answer to all of this. Richard blumenthal is a democratic senator from connecticut. Good evening, thanks for joining me. Did you discuss any of President Trumps comments here with the judge . We did indeed. And i told judge gorsuch that i find these personal insults and invective absolutely abhorrent, a threat to the independent judiciary. And i asked him in effect to condemn them publicly, explicitly, directly. And he responded that he finds attacks on the independence of the judiciary to be disheartening and demoralizing, but he has declined so far at least to publicly condemn them, which is what i think is appropriate, and do it in a way that the American Public understands that he is really independent of donald trump. And its very important. Senator, youre saying basically you met with President Trumps appointee here who he wants to be on the Supreme Court, and he told you today that President Trumps comments about judges are demoralizing, but he wont go out and say that in public the way you advise . And thats not enough. Not enough for him to do it behind closed doors. Not enough for him to say that it is demoralizing and disheartening. What has to happen is a direct repudiation, a condemnation of this kind of unprecedented atta. As you observed, president s have disagreed with opinions, especially after there have been rulings. Here we find a stream of bullying and bluster, personal invective and insult that undermined the integrity of the courts. Thats high he needs to condemn them. Are you suggesting this is an issue for his confirmation, that if judge gorsuch doesnt go out and publicly do this that that would affect potentially your vote . Very much. So because donald trump has made the independence of the judiciary an issue front and center, and he has established a set of litmus tests. He said publicly, in fact he promised his supporters that he will appoint a nominee only if he is a strong Second Amendment supporter, prolife, and conservative. And if neil gorsuch fails to in effect separate himself and make explicit his views on those issues, we have to assume that he fits that donald trump litmus test. Did you learn anything else in your meeting today about him as a judge or a person . We had about a 40minute meeting. And i learned a good deal about his love of the outdoors and exercise. Some of his jurisprudential news. But when i questioned him specifically on his commitment to the established long accepted roe v. Wade, he declined to say whether he would commit to it. The same is true of other legal doctrines that i think are important. So im left with serious concerns about his nomination. He wouldnt roe v. Wade being decisive, on the lower court, thats his job. On the Supreme Court you can always come to new interpretations. Youre telling us your view is he left you the impression that he is prolife or he might reverse roe . Is that what you gathered from your meeting . Well, he left it unanswered in specific terms. The doctrine is judges should not comment on issues or cases that may come before the court. But youre absolutely right. This idea of what you call stari decisis. It refers not only to the Supreme Court but lower courts. His failure to say explicitly, directly he would adhere to roe directly he would adhere to roe v. Wade is very troubling to me, along with concerns about privacy rights generally, his opinions that elevate corporate interests and worker safety, consumer protection. These kinds of issues im going to press when he comes before our committee, the Judiciary Committee for a hearing. And i will wait to make up my mind until then. But i remain with serious but i remain with serious concerns nop concerns its especially interesting to hear your relaying what President Trumps nominee here is saying about him. I can also add for our viewers nbc news confirmed with a judge gorsuch spokesperson who basically confirmed the accuracy of the quote you gave. But interesting only to hear it secondhand. Maybe well learn a lot more as the hearings approach. I hope youll come back on msnbc again. Great. Thank you very much, are rich. Thank you. Now coming up, how many sitting senators said things on the floor about other senators that are pretty much obviously worse than what senator warren quoted about Jeff Sessions without getting silenced by Mitch Mcconnell . Those are protesters descending on senator Mitch Mcconnells home tonight saying they want to get senator Elizabeth Warrens back after what all sides concede was a highly unusual standoff on the senate floor last night. I call the senate to order under the provision rule 19. Mr. President the senator from massachusetts. Mr. President , i am surprised that the words of Coretta Scott king are not suitable for debate in the United States senate. I ask leave of the senate to continue my remarks. Is there objection . Object. I appeal objection is heard. The senator will take her seat. The senator will take her seat. And she did, but she didnt go quietly. Senator warren continued her floor speech just outside the senate doors, this time to a much larger audience on facebook where she read Coretta Scott kings letter to an audience of over 5 million. She also called into the Rachel Maddow show as you may have seen last night claiming mcconnell was misapplying rule 19 that tells not to impute to another senator any unbecoming conduct or motive. Which is to be fair reasable rule thais designed to keep the peace during debates. It was passed in response to a fistfight in the Senate Chambers between two senator, John Mclaurin and ben tillman who were from the same state and the same party, both democrats. Mclaurin called tillman a liar and the senate rule passed within a week. The senate rarely invokes the rule, even when it is tested like when ted cruz sanctimoniously called Mitch Mcconnell a liar. What we just saw today was an absolute demonstration that not only what he told every republican senator, but what he told the press over and over and over again was a simple lie. So dramatic. Or earlier this month when the senate got a little emotional. You know, Amy Winehouse used to say her tears dry on their own. Senator david perdue argued that Chuck Schumers tears for refugees wouldnt ever dry because they were fake. The minority leaders tear jerking performance over the past weekend belonged to the Screen Actors Guild awards, not in a serious discussion of what it takes to keep america safe. Oh, snap these senators are so mean to each other. Then there was this doozy from Lindsey Graham speaking at a press conference about decorum on the senate floor. He literally says the whole senate would be fine killing ted cruz. If you killed ted cruz on the floor of the senate and the trial was in the senate, nobody could convict you. I mean, thats not nice. Thats not a nice thing to say about another senator. So it does turn out there are a lot of things senators do say about each other without any official rebuke. So why was last night different from all those other nights . Well, im excited to say that nancy giles and Erin Gloria Ryan are here to weigh in straight ahead. vo this is not a video game. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum senator Lindsey Graham think theres is another reason why senator Elizabeth Warren has been leading the resistance against donald trump and his nominees. She is clearly running for the nomination in 2020. The Democratic Party is being pushed really hard by the most extreme voices in their community, and they just dont know how to handle it. If they empower her, then i think the Democratic Party is going to lose its way with the vast majority of the american people. Joining us now as promised is nancy giles, contributor to cbs news sunday morning and the host of the giles files podcast. And Erin Gloria Ryan, a Senior Editor for the daily beast. Nancy, why did senator warren get such disparate treatment as compared to what we showed before the break, all the other senatorial attacks . Duly, i think what senator graham said is true, but he left out the part that theyre really scared of her. So they had to silence her. Were right now at the beginning of february, which is black history month. So between that and march being womens history month, they can kind of kill two birds with one stone by silencing one of the most iconic, important civil rights leader, because coretta was there with martin doing stuff and putting the kibosh on elizabeth. It was just bad. It looked bad. It looked like little girl sit down. And it was pretty disgusting. You mentioned black history month. Frederick douglass is really getting out there. He is getting more recognition. Day by day. Day by day, yes. Good for him. He is trending. Erin, what did you see in that altercation . I saw it as a real unforced error by the republicans. The optics of this were so bad. If they would have left Elizabeth Warren to say what she was going to say in peace and then let her sit down on her own, they wouldnt be dealing with the day theyve been asking today. Instead what theyre doing is basically filling a card of social justice bingo. She is a woman being shouted down by a man because she is reading the words of a black female civil rights leader during black history month. Thank you. And it was just why did Mitch Mcconnell have to do that . It is baffling to me. Because if he wouldnt, there wouldnt be a 5 million view video on facebook of Elizabeth Warren completing her speech. I mean, its like i think they are drunk with power. Its not like, they are. They have the house and the senate. Theyre acting kind of drunk. This is a drunk thing to do. Speaking of drunk, the whole thing started because there was fistfight, literally a fistfight in the senate in 1902. Right. And other senators were getting punched. Thats why they called in and said we cant have this. Right. And the other pa that is different in Politics Today is donald trump uses social media one way. An he has used it to great effect as a political organizing tool to get his message out, especially when he disagrees with the press. But there is also something that happens a lot on social media which is the reaction and reappropriation. So well play Mitch Mcconnell, the nine second moment that has now become something. Here is just that moment. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted. And this just took off. Of course. Hillary clinton, who doesnt post all the time anymore put up the tweet she was warned, she was given the explanation. Nevertheless she persisted. What do you think of that reaction we saw pouring across the country today, really . Right. It seemed like from the democrats perspective that they were ready to make this a moment. I think Mitch Mcconnell really helped it make it a viral phenomenon today. There was something that went out from Chuck Schumers staffer about an hour before elizabeth was silenced on the floor that was had a hash tag, let liz speak, which was the one that ended up going hyper viral along with the bits from mcconnell raising his finger in an extremely condescending manner. Im not sure why he went about it in any way, shape or form about it in that way. But it became this huge viral phenomenon. People were making their own memes. People were doing things that werent official. They were cobbling together pictures of feminist leaders. Here is one of the protest took down. Oh, i love that. That battle flag. Any of the others stand out to you . I didnt know how to post on top of the pictures as many people do. But i put up a picture of shirley chisholm. They all three almost became separate hash tags. And there is talk about tshirt, hats. Somebody is going to make a bunch of money off the slogan. It means a lot. Who was it . Who heads the planned parenthood . Thank you. Richards. Yes. Cecile richards said these are Like Fighting words for women risks we doing more bingo . No but these are like the words that inspire the womens movement. This is what the core of discrimination against women comes around to. Its just dumb. Whats important about that in the debate, which is okay, this was fighting against senator sessions to be attorney general, he was confirmed in the vote today, although narrowly. But e question here is not a politicaone. There are other cabinet appointments where you say the president gets to pick the people who agree with him. Senator sessions now attorney general session as of tonight has an obligation to enforce laws whether he likes them or not. The violence against women act, the civil rights act, the fair housing act, the Voting Rights act, these are federal laws that he has an obligation now to enforce, which makes him different than any other cabinet member. Yeah. I think thats true. Its also true ive been thinking about this today because my i think a lot of people on the left have really felt that the election was a call to arms for them. And an awakening. And on one hand, this is not a victory. Today the democrats didnt experience a victory. But the good news for them is that they fought. Thats what we saw today. Thats what a fight looks like, even though they lost. And almost unified except there was one democrat who voted for sessions. Where is he on your bingo card . He is crossed out. I put whiteout all over him. And im using that not as a metaphor. Literally. Im just saying. I never miss an Early Morning market. But with my back pain i couldnt sleep or get up in time. Then i found aleve pm. The only one to combine a sleep aid plus the 12 hour pain relieving strength of aleve. And now. Im back aleve pm for a better am. The 9th circuit could reinstate the ban as early as tomorrow or keep it blocked as the case goes to trial. But we do know people were watching that hearing. The audio was streamed by msnbc and the two other major networks. And with that audience it also included we can tell you President Trump. He told Police Chiefs today about his view from listening to the hearing. I listened to a panel of judges. And ill comment on that. I will not comment on the statements made by certainly one judge. Now up next tonight on the last word, the key strategist behind the Bernie Sanders movement weighs in on what some are calling a Resistance Movement to stop donald trump. Once upon a time a girl with golden locks broke into a house owned by three bears. She ate some porridge, broke the baby bears chair, and stole some jewelry, a flatscreen tv, and a laptop. Luckily the Geico Insurance agency had helped the bears with homeowners insurance. They were able to replace all their items. Including a new chair from crate and barrel. Call geico and see how easy it is to switch and save on homeowners insurance. Deartheres no other way to say this. Its over. Ive found a permanent escape from monotony. Together, we are perfectly balanced, our senses awake, our hearts racing as one. I know this is sudden, but they say if you love something. Set it free. See you around, giulia what you are seeing now are millions of people becoming engaged in the political process in a way that they have not been before, and i think at a certain point the republicans are going to have to Pay Attention to that or else they have to face a real political challenge. That is true. Millions of people have been engaged since President Trumps inauguration, some calling it a movement animated mostly by just opposition to trump. Others say look, this is a positive movement with its own values, and that when the losing candidate actually gets 3 million more votes, the coalition from november would naturally persist. By historical standards, is this a large movement . We have the context tonight. Protests against the iraq war topped 375,000 in 2003. Counting events in multiple cities. The next year 800,000 people marched on washington for womens reproductive rights. Obamas election then sparked grassroots conservative action. 70,000 gathered for a massive Tea Party Event in washington in 09. Another 80,000 came back the next year for glenn becks big washington rally. Now the largest gatherings have not been confined to washington, d. C. It was about 100,000 protesters that gathered for labor rights in wisconsin in 2011. You may remember that fight against Governor Scott walkers plan to crack down on unions. After obamas reelection, a massive 650,000 person protests were for a march to protest abortion there in washington. Those are by our counts some of the largest gatherings on record. And they got many politicians attention. So look at this comparison. The womens march drew about half a Million People in washington alone, and four Million People total in cities across america, much larger than anything weve seen by basically any standard, these trump protests are some of the largest gatherings in contemporary history. So what will they lead to . Joining me now is jeff weaver, former Campaign Manager for Bernie Sanders and president of our revolution, a Political Organization that evolved out of that campaign. Good evening. I put the question to you as someone who is a part of a campaign that punched above its weight, that had a large grassroots effort, that arguably impacted the Democratic Party while not winning the nomination. Where does this go . Well, i think youve seen, as you pointed out an unprecedented groundswell of people across this country who are not only offended by what trump is doing in the white house, but also want to see us move forward in a way that recognizes the dignity of every person in this country that creates broadbased opportunity for people all across this country. That wants to make sure that womens rights are protected harkes the Lgbt Community is protected, that immigrant communities are protected, African American communities are protected. People are coming together in sort of spontaneous outpours of protest and support. And it really bodes well for the future of this country in terms of moving news a much more progressive direction going forward. The challenge now is to coalesce this energy, to organize as well as mobilize. Weve seen a lot of mobilization. But now we have to organize so that we can turn out the forces of reaction that control our government and move news the direction i think that so Many Americans want to go. Right. Organizing is all about an ask. And in campaigns its more focused because you have an overriding ask to elect the candidate. Right. And a day to do it, election day. Its really focused. What do you think should be the main ask of this movement . Well, i think what were doing, and many other groups are doing as well, and folks can go to ourrevolution. Com if they want to sign up to be a part of our resistance effort is to keep people mobilized on an ongoing basis. As you know, there have been calling campaigns in opposition to the extreme folks at the trump adminiration has put forward for nomination to the cabinet. There is going to be continued action of the travel ban. Folks are being mobilized around that. So there is a lot of activity going on. Right now the people can be involved in. Do. You think this Resistance Movement as you call it should also target democrats if theyre working too closely with the Trump Administration . The tea party, as you know, focused its initial energies on republicans and even defeating some from congress . Right. Certainly if there are democrats who are standing with trump or standing with republicans, who are standing against the people of this country, then they should be replaced as well there is no doubt about that. Bernie sanderss email list, as you know, was a powerful thing, and it raised a lot of money. And you said clearly, youre not sharing wit the dnc. Why not, and what do you want to do with it . The Bernie Sanders list is made up of folks who supported Bernie Sanders and his campaign. It was an Unprecedented Campaign in its ability to raise money in small dollar amounts from people across this country. The dnc can build its own list. But what it has to do is reestablish credibility with the people that youre seeing in the streets. I think too many people feel that the dnc has become disconnected from the grassroots. And so theres got to be some rebuilding of the party institutionally at the grassroot, and rebuilding the trust and confidence of working class people. At this moment your view is the dnc doesnt have that credibility . Well, i think there has been obviously a lot of problems that were revealed through the wikileaks about dnc collusion with the Clinton Campaign and others to try to thwart the grassroots Sanders Movement during the 2016 president ial election. So we need a candidate who knows hoto organiz who knows how to bring people in, and who can reestablish that credibility. Right. In my view, Keith Ellison is that person. Jeff weaver, we packed a lot in there. Thanks for your time. Thanks. That is our show. You can always find me on email tonight criticism from the president from misnominee to the Supreme Court as mr. Trump lashes out from the federal judges. Donald trump going after a retail chain after they dropped his daughters clothing line. Mccain has a story that he says sean spicer needs to here.
