And chatter about this happened at least one person alluding to someone who have been burned to death by isis on january 8th. That went no further. There was hope that the pilot was alive but in fact probably was not and what had happened with the japanese journalist is amman, jordan the government said that it would release the hostage, the detainee executed today. These are inverted and turned around. It was a fascinating theater by isis and the jordanian government calling the bluff of isis on whether they were holding this pie lot or not. Interesting words. Fascinating theater orchestrating by isis. Some analysts are looking at this saying isis released the video today just as Jordans King Abdullah was on a state visit to washington. Was there any connection there do you think . Well were speculating on all of this but looking at the release of other videos they had put out and the orchestration of what they had done on specific dates with various with james foley, with other hostages the date and timing of the release of these videos has been highly precise and part of a very sophisticated communications and broad Global Social media plan that isis and advocates have orchestrated and thus it wouldnt be surprising were speculating that they were trying to send a signal to the jordanian people on the day that their king was collaborating with the president of the United States whom they depict as one of the great evil leaders of the world and that reminding the jordanian people that this pilot would pay the price as will other jordanians with collaboration with the United States and for their bombing isis brothers and sisters if you will. So, i believe its highly likely that they picked this date because of the meeting with the president. This was planned sometime ago. Steve, do you think at all that this will unite the muslim resolve, the jordanian resolve behind the Coalition Forces attempt to eradicate isis if you will . We know that King Abdullah was meeting with president obama today. Any news of what may have come from that . I think in the early resolve, you had a number of muslim arab Muslim Leaders in washington, d. C. Over the last couple of days. We not only had the jordanian king but meeting with senior level of the government. Meeting with people like general john allen who is our isis envoy and coordinator. John kerry. Vice president biden. Defense secretary hagel and others. So i think that this interestingly i agree with those analysts who have said this may have actually strengthened the kings hand because the underreported story recently is that the stress on the public in jordan has been immense. Not only because of the capture of the jordanian pilot who was connected to a well established and Famous Family inside jordan but because jordan in every corner of that country has been taking care of and absorbing refugees from the Syrian Crisis from the iraq crisis and really the countrys bursting at the seams with how much its supporting from the region with very little acknowledgment from the rest of the world or aid and support. Today, president obama committed a billion dollars in aid to jordan but thats a small pittance compared to what they have been carrying so this is very emotional and many jordanians questioning whether or not their role in the antiisis coalition made sense for them and thus i think that had the pilot been alive and had he been executed now in the jordanian government not pulled off the switch we might see genuine political instability in amman. What we now see because of the death of the pilot in january, and the outrageous spectacular murder of this man, we see people in the street rallying to the government and so angry and this may have created the iron steel and resolve and resilience that jordan needs which i think will be a template for other countries in the region well thats what i wanted to ask you, steve. Is this perhaps a Tipping Point for the muslim world . I think it could be. I think that there is there is outrage in the muslim world what they saw because many people know that this pilot was a devout muslim starting a family from a great tribe and this resonates particularly with many sunnis throughout the region so i think that this could be that turning point. That said much of the support for isis has come because theres a fear that the United States is not playing the role it once played in the region. It is acquiescing to growing iranian power in the region and the shiites on the rise everywhere. And to a certain degree theres emotional and Financial Support for isis seeing it as a protector of sunni interest and the way to check iranian power when the middle east is changing. That may sound crazy, it may sound ill founded, but many sunnis many shaikhs in the region think thats the role that isis and some of the other groups are playing. Its hard for us to accept that but at the same time that is why you have a kind of mixed level of support but hopefully the outrage and bar barety tybarbarity we saw in the video released today will turn things around. All right. Steve clemens, editor at large for the atlantic thank you for joining us by phone. Ill ask you to stand by. We are following a number of breaking news stories. Right now the latest on commuter train accident out of valhalla, new york. A train collided with a Jeep Cherokee and according to reports the gates came down on top of the vehicle, the train gates and stopped on the track. The driver got out to look at the rear of the car and then actually got back in the car, drove forward and thats when that driver was struck by the train. Seven people confirmed dead include the female driver of the Jeep Cherokee and six passengers on the train and about 400 passengers that had to be rerouted by bus. Joining me on the phone is wnbc reporter Gus Rosendale at the scene. Describe to me how this played out before your eyes. Well betty, good evening. You know, we got to the scene, hundreds of people on board that train were till in the process of getting reunited with their families. Whens going on right now is ntsb go team on the way here. Governor cuomo on scene giving us an update. Big question is what was this truck doing the the crossing . Stuck there . Placing there . We dont know. As described it the female driver had been seen in and out of that vehicle. One report had her out of vehicle just as the train struck killing her instantly. And six people on board. The death toll now at seven. Just a little while ago we heard from the mta an they investigate the accident. Obviously have the human tragedy, first and foremost and there is also a logistical challenge ahead of this. This is one of the most used commuter railroads in the country. Hundreds of thousands of people depend on it to get to the city every day an a major stretch shut down and a scramble for buses and logistics of people heading out into the morning commute. As for the accident itself we have more details. When the train struck the Jeep Cherokee the third rail ripped through the first car and enormous explosion. Big fire. And a lot of smoke and when you see the video of that first car in particular, the interior of it, entire first car is blackened and to realize it was pretty packed with people is extraordinary thing. Yeah. We are hearing hundreds of people on board which is not surprising because it happened in the height of rush hour and this commuter train is second busiest commuter line in the country if that gives you any indication of how serious an accident this was, especially on the onset hearing a commuter train collided with a train on the tracks. I want you to stand by. We have some sound coming in to msnbc of one of the passengers on that train. How did you get out of the train . Thats how i cut my hand. I bashed the glass and slid the door open and just started climbing off. You get outside and this point the fire is going . Yeah. We got outside from the car that i was in. The left side of the train. So were looking up like the trains here. We are looking up toward the front. The fire is really going like crazy and there was another the thing that precipitated people really starting to freak and having us break the glass and open the door is there was a loud bam like an explosion type thing and then once we jumped off on the side there was okay. There was another explosion to a lesser degree. So were talking about an accident and then explosions and fire and smoke that occur after that. I imagine the people at the back of this train, though gus, like we heard didnt really know what had just happened. No. It was very interesting. Talked to people who were in the front and saw the bulk of the extent of the damage and the people at the back not sure what was going on. The train made an unscheduled stop and wasnt an occasion of alarms going off or didnt see the smoke or the fire. And just talking to a couple of passengers we did, obviously, part of the investigation to quickly get going here they did not get a lot of announcements. Bear in mind you have on a standard commuter train, the engineer in the front who did survive remarkably seeing the video, a couple of conductors trying to ascertain whats going on and trying to get word out. What was the status of the Communication Systems on board . But people in the back really didnt know anything was wrong, seriously wrong, until people in the front couple of cars were moving increasingly back. You have the already crowded cars more and more crowded and people spreading the word that something terrible happened. You can kind of imagine the Group Dynamic that creates. To their credit, to everyone we talked to even though you have people and heard from a passenger to get a rubber tube that goes around the emergency windows, manage it out with your hand. It doesnt just swing open here. Cutting the fingers in the process and trying to scramble out and realizes theres a sfapt drop from the window to the ground, as well. All happened on a train packed with approximately 650 people. Thats the average passenger load of this train. All of that happening with the fire going, smoke going. That more people were not hurt that were not hearing of greater extent of injuries and more deaths is Something Else here. That was noted by the governor as well in the briefing a short while ago. A big question and the ntsb looking at this as well why was that Jeep Cherokee stalled on the track. Why did the woman get out and back in and what caused her to be there when the train collided with her . Gus rosendale, thank you for joining us. We are following several breaking news stories. The breaking news out of jordan tonight, two al qaeda prisoners executed apparently in retaliation for the gruesome murder of that Jordanian Air force pilot by isis. Earlier, my colleague Lawrence Odonnell asked correspondent Andrea Mitchell about reaction to the killing in jordan. I think very clear that jordan is first of all experiencing the horror the shock. Theres been support for the king and for the royal family and this is something that would be very very important in that society. This was a prominent family. The government had agreed to make the trade of the very wellknown hostage, the woman who was the attempted suicide bomber and that was demanded and expected by the head of the family, the father of the pilot. Very important tribe in jordan society. And the fact that the king flew back he clearly informed the president at 6 15 when they met this evening, 6 15 eastern and then flew back cutting short his trip. And basically signaled that they were not going to roll over. That they were not going to back off of the coalition against isis. This is an exostential moment for jordan. They have 800,000 refugees from the syrian civil war. They were today signing a memorandum of understanding with secretary kerry for an increase in aid to help them sustain this refugee crisis which is a number of refugees are 21 of the total population now. Their country is being overwhelmed and the fact that this brutality, nlg, none of these executions have been easy to take but this one so far exceeded the beheadings even. It seemed isis was outdoing itself for shock value and that i think has exactly gotten the contrary reaction. King abdullah having consulted with the committees on the house side and the president and secretary kerry today, flew home feeling empowered to face down the crisis. Nbcs Andrea Mitchell reporting there. Again, jordan executing two al qaeda prisoners in relal yags for isis video that was released today showing that it had indeed brutally executed a jordanian pilot who was in a cage and burned alive. The country executed two prisoners including a would be female suicide bomber it hoped to exchange for a pilot killed by isis. On tuesday, isis released a 22minute video showing the burning of the pi lot reportedly happening january 3rd. Joining me on the phone to talk about this is Law Enforcement analyst jim cavanaugh, former hostage negotiator. Jim, you dont have to see the video to understand the brutality. The pilot was in a cage. He was brned alive in the isis video. It was a well orchestrated video highly produced. What was isis trying to get out of this . Well i think that thats a great point, betty, because i think we have to look at isis not only as terrorists but we have to look at them as criminals. In Law Enforcement we always looked at them both ways as terrorists and criminals to see whens inside their mind. You know i watched a lot of the video. It is horrific and barbaric and youre trying to always get a you know a slice of who they are. I mean theyre so sociopathic killers now that killing is not even a chore to them. Inside their organization they would get no credibility or graf gravitas for just killing because they kill all the time for little reason. Thats the slaughter, you know syrian soldiers or you know foreigners who come to fight with them. They slaughter them all the time betty. But what also strikes me here in this video is to watch the great production quality of it the time they took to make it. The fact that they killed this pilot almost a month ago. And they go to great pains which folks havent talked about as much but they go to great pains to show the photographs of current your dannian Fighter Pilots. They show their photographs. They show a gps location to their home in jordan with their address, you know where their family lives theyre clearly trying to get, you know self initiated terrorist sympathizers to go attack the Fighter Pilots home attack the Fighter Pilots and so thats a message that resonates in this thing. You know theres a lot of motivations, betty, why they do it. You talked about them tonight so many times and all of your guests have been just excellent talking about it. I think i would just add this on top. That this is a significant thing in the criminal mind. Youre trying to back off these Fighter Pilots. Youre trying to relieve themselves of this pain. They really are experiencing warfare from the air strikes, from the United States. From jordan. You know . From our allies over there and that really stands out in the videos. Are they also trying to draw in jordan trying to destabilize that country . Oh absolutely. You know we talk about the woman they just executed today, you know those of us who always in Law Enforcement intelligence military people who follow terrorists remember these bombings in 2005 in jordan. It was a series of three bombings at hotels and it killed 57 people. It was a very brutal bombing. I mean they went into a wedding party, hotel, suicide bombers. They were just you know slaughtering people. And the woman who was captured her suicide vest did not detonate. You can imagine the horror in the small country like jordan of having three horrific bombings killing 57 people at these 3 major hotels and killing many wellknown jordanians who were you know, present at the events and then this woman survived. So she was almost like having a surviving 9 11 person you know in jordan in jail on death row. And of course she has deep connections, too. The isis as they call themselves which really is al qaeda in iraq 2. 5 2. 0. And so in 2005 they were al qaeda in iraq. Started bizarre kay zarqawi and thats this group. Al qaeda in iraq. Lets understand whos at the top. Who would order that video like this . Such brutality on the video and the Great Lengths to highly produce it and send out a message. Yeah. Thats right, betty. I think it went all the way to the top, for sure. Baghdadi, hes got to be the one thats you know at least approving every step of this and the purpose, theres terror theres the propaganda of the deed to get new recruits. Theres to try to intimidate isis and theres a very specific very specific effort to target jordanian Fighter Pilots and their families to try to dissuade them from the air strikes. I mean it really shows you i think this guys if our military analyst would tell us i think, you know assessment of how those air strikes are hurting this group, you know our military knows it deeply but we would probably see that theyre really suffering in warfare. You know . We see our own suffering in warfare but these guys are suffering deeply as well. Theyre discombobulated. They cant start a society. Theyre killing everyone that theyre trying to rule. Theyre subjugating and raping and slaughtering them. Hit from the air. So you know theres only 30,000 of them from the estimates we have seen. So these guys are really in the deep cycle here. This is an attempt by them to stem the tide of those Fighter Pilots. Why did they do that betty . Because they dont have an air force. They dont have an air force that can reattack jordan. This is what they have. Yeah but, you know, jim, thktd this could backfire on them. It could unite jordan with the u. S. Led coalition against isis and on their own fighters talking to analyst earlier saying theres at least 100 defectors of isis reported so well see how this plays out but we appreciate you joining us by phone tonight to lend your insight into the latest move by isis and then jordans retaliation and doing so executing two prisoners so well continue to follow this breaking news story here on msnbc. We are following a number of breaking news stories including one out of new york which is about an hour north of new york city and seven people are confirmed dead and at least 12 people injured after a train collided with a Jeep Cherokee on the tracks. According to reports, the gates came down on top of that vehicle stopped on the tracks. The driver then got out to look at the rear of the car, got back in and drove forward and thats when it was struck by the train. Those seven people confirmed dead include the female driver of the Jeep Cherokee and six passengers on the train. Want to go to nbc reporter at westchester medical center. Again, we understand seven people confirmed dead and around 12 injured. Is that what youre hearing . Reporter thats what were hearing, betty. According to the authorities, they said that 12 injured of the train passengers brought here. Well turn to see what the facility locks like. They were brought here to this westchester medical center. And inside we saw some of the loved ones who we believe relatives of those injured passengers and you can imagine theres just a look of fright and concern on their faces. One of the reasons i think that many people do take Public Transportation is because theres an expectation of safety on these vehicles with this form of transportation and tonight that all failed for so many families. Again, 12 of them here. We were told that ten of those passengers were seriously injured. We are waiting on more word of exactly the extent of those injuries. But tonight families are saying prayers and hoping that their loved ones will be safe as a result of this accident that happened right at the height of rush hour about 6 30 in the evening as you gave the details about a car ending up on the tracks and then ended up in a deadly and a fiery crash. Yeah. Just a tragic accident. Couldnt come at a worst time. As you mentioned, height of rush hour and we do want to note for the viewers, second busiest commuter line in the country. Thank you so much for joining us live. New york governor held a press conference on the crash just a short time ago. Lets take a listen to that. What we know what appears to have happened now, theres going to be investigations that follow up that determine all the facts, but what appears to have happened is a car was stopped on the tracks. It was hit by the train. And the resulting fire and explosion of hitting the car consumed the car, the vehicle, and then the first car of the train itself. At this time we believe the driver of the car has perished as well as six people in the train itself. Again, this is all preliminary information. There will be followup investigations as to exactly what happened but as far as the available eyewitnesses and what can be put together tonight, thats what the situation looks to be. Most importantly, you have seven people who started out today to go about their business and arent going to be making it home tonight. And its a painful reminder to all of us how precious life is and sometimes how random it can be. This is a truly ugly and brutal sight. The track, the third rail of the track, came up from the explosion and went right through the car. So it is truly a devastatingly ugly situation to see. I want the thank all of the First Responders who were on site under very difficult circumstances and doing a really phenomenal job to do everything that they can. Other than that any questions for myself or others . Theres a witness whens claiming that right behind the car that was hit and that the gates may have malfunctioned. Any information on that . We have not heard that. As i said all we know from eyewitnesses et cetera and the best facts that we have is that a car was stopped on the tracks with the gates down and was then hit by the car. But there will be records, these are electronic devices. So when people actually go through the facts well know exactly what happened. [ inaudible ] louder, please. The locomotive engineer was injured and taken to a hospital and not within of the casualties. How many injured at this point . Dont know that number. The train normally leaves Grand Central with 655 people on it. Thats the count usually. Approximately the speeds it would be doing i believe the maximum allow allowable speed is 60 miles per hour. So that could be but as the governor said event reporter on the train. Part of the investigation of the National Transportation safety board is going to do is gather all those facts before we actually km to a conclusion. When you look at the damage done, and the damage by the fire, its actually amazing that not more people were hurt on that train. How does the third rail the third rail entered the flor of the car and under sections of the third rail in the first car. Any idea how that happened . Third rail stopped at the crossing and thats where the contact with the automobile was made and entered through the automobile and up through the floor of the car. Anything else . Okay. Thank you. All right. You have been listening to Governor Cuomo and other officials there giving a brief press conference on this train crash that occurred earlier this evening during the height of rush hour. And just a reminder this is a second busiest commuter line in the country. Seven People Killed at least 12 people injured. And they are at westchester medical center. And the ntsb National Transportation safety board, investigators from that agency are headed to the scene and will be trying to determine exactly what happened. It hoped to exchange for a jordanian pilot killed by Islamic State militants. Isis released a 22minute video showing the burning of the pilot. The execution reportedly happened january 3rd. On the phone, sheriff frankel for buzzfeed and Steve Clemens for the atlantic. I want to start with you. What kind of message was Jordans King Abdullah sending with the swift retall yigs and execution of these prisoners . I think he was really sending a message to his own people. I was in jordan last week and spoke with a great number of people there that feel like jordan is quite passive, a lot of negotiations back and forth and feel like they havent taken a Strong Enough stand against the Islamic State, isis. I think the king was reassuring the public to say well execute the people and take harsher action and trying to rally a support both for himself and his governments decision to join the u. S. Coalition. Do you think its going to end with these executions or is jordan going to go further if you will and do more in the area of retaliation for the killing of its pilot . Well were already seeing them further. There have been arrests in cities where support of isis is really growing. And we have seen them strengthen their forces along the border. I think the jordanian public now, the sheer brutality of that video, watching one of their own be burned an i live and then have it be sort of captured in video that way, jordanian public wont stand for it and want to see jordan take very strong Decisive Action at this point. They were in the Street Holding the pictures of the pilot. They want retall yigs an they got it today. Thank you. Now back to Steve Clemens for the atlantic. I was talking moments ago about what happens next and in your eyes what do you see happening . Well i think that your dan and will continue to crack down on people it sees as contributing funding, participating in activities that help organizations like isis and al nuzra. I think you will see jordan step up at the National Government level. And organize forces to take a more kinetic role against isis. I think that you will see the king, King Abdullah who i think before this had been looked at as weak and somewhat unsure of himself, i think youre beginning to see evidence that he sees that this is the moment to show that he has a lot of his father in him, king hussein and that he is going to be firm have great resolve and move his country forward because i think that he sees now the people in the streets are supporting and really calling for much more Decisive Action from him. Absolutely. We are looking at video of that right now. Do you think isis should be worried at this point that the plan, the brutality possibly backfired . Its very very hard to know what they consider the cost for what they have done. And, you know, when you look at the fact that they tried to make a strategic ploy and holding kobani and may have lost upwards of 2,000 or 3,000 people in kobani, you could ask yourself does isis think that was worth it or do they think in other places in Northern Iraq where they staged coups or took over and hold significant parts of mosul or mt. Sinjar there are various point that is you think about the horror this group created. Each one of these things is substantial. But isis seems to have a different calculation so i dont want to say that they think that the blowback and the mistake that they may have made in this is something that they will ever acknowledge. I think that they think that on the whole, you know in terms of net value that this kind of horrific video creates, it brands them as the terror group in the world that most matters at this time and thats what they really want and we are giving it to them in a way with the attention and with the reaction. So in that they very much succeeded. It is hard not to react when you see this your dannian pilot behind a cage trapped in this capable and then set on fire. Absolutely. Burned alive. Do you think isis just the mindset behind the people running this organization, this terrorist organization that perhaps they will ratchet it up even more so than this . This is a calculating death cult and, you know i tell you, you know we need to be careful of reckless speculation and im one that thinks that we have so many strategic challenges in the world. This is but one and you cant get too lost in one set of challenges. I was just in paris and visited the site where the Charlie Hebdo attacks happened various parts of paris where theres concern and it is an interesting thing to think about that theres a lot of traffic. You have over 1,500 french people that have gone to syria to volunteer and join up with isis. You have 18,000 foreign fighters. Many of these are european who go into the United States without visas. This could come here some day and its something we have to be prepared for and think about. Scary thought. All right. Steve clemons, thank you. Were following the breaking news story. Eastern and crashed ten minutes later with 58 people on board. At least 12 people were killed. The plane went down in a river after clipping a bridge. 16 people taken to hospitals. The latest crash comes months after another transasia plane went down off of taiwans coast and killed 48 people. Joining me now live from beijing is nbc news asia correspondent ian williams joining me by phone. Lock at this video, it is quite dramatic. The plane pretty much falling out of the sky, turning on the side and clipping the side of a bridge. What is the latest there . Reporter good morning, betty. Those dramatic pictures were taken by a dash cam, two dash cams of passing cars. The aircraft had just taken off from taipeis second airport serving mainly domestic flights. Cartwheeling across the elevated motorway appearing to clip the edge of the motorway and according to some reports hit a taxi before coming to a rest in the shallow river. 58 people on board. 31 of those mainland chinese. According to local news reports, the latest, ten people are confirmed dead but that figure is likely to rise. The rescue operation is continuing. The stricken fuselage of the aircraft is surrounded by clusters of dinghies full of rescue workers and bringing out luggage, trying to find the way in to people who may be trapped inside. Now, the aircraft was on the way to an outlying island. Taiwanese island. Short hop away. When it came down. One of the Big Questions being asked is whether the pilot was in control of the plane. Whether he was trying to steer it in order to try to miss a large cluster of apartment blocks nearby in order to put it down in the i suppose comparative safety of the river. But thats just guesswork at the moment and its mid afternoon in taipei and that rescue operation is continuing betty. Yeah. We are looking at video of that right now. Quickly, do you have any word on any possible distress signals or anything to give an indication of what went wrong . Not yet. The aircraft lost communications, not contact, but around 5 to 11 00 local time this morning. It was it had only just taken off. But the weather was relatively clear although it had been stormy and if you look at the web cam those dash cam pictures, it was still raining but as yet no sign of what might have gone wrong, betty.
