We spoke to a young woman who put the gun to his own head and she talked him out of it and he later shot her before he left. She had never seen him with a gun before that. That exgirlfriend by the way still recovering this evening. Wenjian liu and rafael ramos were shot point blank range by the shooter who later killed hill self. As the memorial grows in brooklyn, the citys mayor is calling for a halt to political protest and finger pointing, the focus turning to two grieving families and their fellow officers. Lets see the families through their journey and through the funerals then debate can begin again. Early the mayor and Police Commissioner bill bratton visited the families of the two who were gunned down saturday afternoon, assassinated in the words of police, as they sat in their patrol car. Ismaaiyl brinsley driven in part by hatred of police am bushed the officers before killing himse himself. He had been arrested 19 tilmes. He was often violent and tried to commit suicide last year. Some police nationwide protests over Police Tactics caused Ismaaiyl Brinsley to attack. Officers turned think backs on de blasio when he visited the hospital where the officers died but bill bratton dismisses the criticism. This is something that should bring us together not take us apart. The police force and the city mourn the Police Officers loss. Governor cuomo calling for cooling off period. Having this to say hannukkah. The murders have ignited a fresh round of finger pointing else where. Former mayor saying meanwhile former mayor giuliani said blaming bill de blasio goes to far but president obama is not out of bounds. We had four months of propaganda starting with the president that everybody should hate the police, thats what those protests are all about. The protests are being embraced and encouraged, the protests, even the ones that dont lead to violence and a lot of them lead to violence, all lead to conclusion, the police are bad, the police are racist, that is completely wrong. Some criticized mayor de blasio about his comment earlier this month that he mentioned the dangerouses that his son a young black man may face when engaged with police. Tension has been noticeable between mayor and Police Officers. Lets turn to now to long time congressmen, i want to pick up on what former mayor giuliani said that these protests have been all about hating the police is there any truth to that . Mayor giuliani has a long history of heated rhetoric especially as it relates to the black community when he was mayor. This is not the time for me to get involved in discussing anything he has said. This is the time to bury those heroes. To make certain that police know how much we respect them for what theyre doing and to not express the feelings that a lot of people have. Yeah. You said it earlier today, there are many levels that we have to discuss, but we should allow these heroes to be buried. A lot of those areas have to do with the mentally ill. Yeah. The ability to get guns. The violence in our city and our country. And godforbid we should talk about race. But after the burial, this great city of ours has the ability to come together and deal with this and not to point fingers. We heard from bill bratton the day before who indicated that this was about the worse that he has seen in new york in several decades in terms of the relationship between police and the people they are pleasing. What say you to that . Youve been around a long time and seen the ups and downs with regards to that relationship. Ive seen ups and downs. Is this the worst its ever been . Listen every day is a challenge and were lucky to be alive to deal with it. Ive been through combat, bive been through 9 11 and all these thipgs, if we cant deal with a crazy guy that killed two heroes in the great city of new york, theres nothing wrong with the situation, its wrong with the people in a are in charge. So you think it is all about this one crazy guy, nothing more than that. There are some people that have just been waiting to attack the president , as you just heard, which anybody that is going to relate the president to this incident should be seeing a psychiatrist themselves. The truth of the matter that the mayor of the city of new york represents millions of people in this city. If you feel youre so insecure that you have to say that the blood for these murders on his hand, that is self reflective and no one should even comment on what he has to sayful. My belief is that if you just take a look and see the different races involved in this. We have an asian hero a latino guy, they have families, one in china, the other has a latin back ground. We have an irish guy in charge of the police. We have italian that is mayor of the city of new york a crazy black guy from maryland who came up here to kill these two. And we have a problem in communication between our community and the police. Lets not take this incident. Yeah. Which is totally unrelated except people are looking to express themselves and it doesnt show respect for the famili families. You dont think calling for moratorium on the protest is appropriate . Well, when people feel hurt about something that they have, they can make the determination as long as what theyre doing is respectful. Of course, if anyone asks my view and they havent, i would say yes. Lets have a week and dedicate that to nonviolence and better understanding. And during this time of the year bring up the chaplain and those who talk about jesus and moses and fill in the gap that we got hate going on now. And the thing is everyone knows theres under currents to everything that everyone is saying and theyre just using this horrific event in order to express themselves. Its just not fair to these guys who, and those who are out there each and every day doing what these two gentleman have done, putting their lives on the line and then to have a couple people now have a couple people totally unrelated to these murders. I want to bring in James Peterson at Lee High University and msnbc contributor and jeff change. Professor let me start with you. I know you probably saw and heard that News Conference that wrapped up a short time ago what do you make of that . It sounds like the tone is noticeableably different from what we heard over the weekend. Sure now that everyone is really calling for calm and calling for a shift in tone because theyre noticing that theres certain figure whoses t to play political fooblg witbal this issue. They want to represent a face that model whats they want to see on the ground which is a much calmer tone and more sensible sense of thinking this through and that should lead people to the conclusion that we really have to disconnect these two cases. Its a horrible tragedy that took place in new york city this weekend. Obviously a troubled person committed these murders. That should be thought through and prosecuted on its own but the Emergent Movement against antiPolice Brutality is a National Movement that has many cases felt irthrough it. What do you think that will mean to the Larger Movement the antiPolice Brutality movement. It is a critical cross roads. I think the people of new york need to understand is this movement is a lot bigger than new york. Its bigger than garner and Michael Brown and ferguson. Youre talking about activists all the over the country, a National Movement has to do with ending violence in certain communities. So young people who are leaders are deeply invested in sustaining the momentum beyond and through this particular tragedy to show and demonstrate, although this is an awful thing, the person who committed this act is not related to the movement around ending Police Brutality in our communities. Something struck me that bill bratton said at one point, he said were majoring so much about this chasm between blaz de blasio and the police force, this has existed for decades, that the police have never liked the mayor, how accurate is that. I can comment about what is on the west coast but what i can say the movements that have been taking place since august 9th are some of the biggest move thes we have seen in the history of the u. S. Around police accountability. Looking august 9th through now it has been a daily occurrence and involves millions of people and its about trans forling fo culture of violence that all too often targets and ends black lives. I think that has raised the issue to the level of discussion such that the gallop poll can say that racist and Race Relations are the most important issues on the table that were facing. Its an issue much larger than new york city alone. Its an issue that resonates. Its an issue that the movement is going to continue to raise. I want to make the point talk about the fact that we havent had a consensus for Racial Justice for half a century and this movement has actually put that back on the table. Craig, in terms of the internal politics in new york, you know commissioner bill bratton is trying to down play it, he has to admit theres a lot going on with contract talks and a long 4ihistory of tension between the executive of the city of new york and those who represent the unions for the police, a very strong union. We cant allow those figures to play Politics Around this situation. The mayor ta yooor talked spy about the characterization of the protesters, i want to play what he said. I heard from so many protesters who appreciationed the nypd. I heard from nypd officers and leaders who said they saw peaceful protests and respectful protects. What you managed to do is pull up the few who dont represent the majority who are saying unacceptable things, shouldnt be saying those things and some who physically attack Police Officers. Mayor de blasio taking one of the media to task about the characterization of the protesters the. Do you feel the protesters in new york city, d. C. , on the west coast, the berkeley protesters, have they been unfairly characterized . Generalized even . Yeah, i think so. I think that the message is lost in the focus on the very scattered and small amounts of looting and violence that have occurred. In fact, the protests have been about trans forring tforming th of violence that causes us to have these types of events, an eric garner, Michael Brown, mcbride, happening every generation and having us to go back out into the streets in a lot of respects to call attention to the fact that these legacies of Racial Injustice have not been addressed. The vast majority of protesters have been peaceful. I think the message of that movement is getting through. Absolutely is getting through. Thank you both for being with us. Do appreciate your time tonight. Coming up, what the buzz surrounding Elizabeth Warren could mean for Hillary Clinton. Trenders straight ahead. A Law Enforcement official told us new york congressman Michael Graham is expected to plead guilty to one count of tax fraud. Grim charged in april with 20 felony counts for allegedly concealing more than 1 million in wages and sales from a restaurant he coowned in manhattan. His attorney has no comment today. Luke, what more do we know . Well what we know is sort of what you just said, craig. In fact we do expect michael grim to plead guilty to that one federal count of tax avoidance. This goes into a longstanding investigation into mr. Grims activities. Hes been accused in the past pretty serious things, Campaign Finance irregular lairitis, having ties with someone who was believed to be associated with the mafia, and there were in fact 20 counts of the original indictme indictment, he will only plead guilty to one, he was somehow aable to avoid another 19. He was reelected in the midterms. This is his third if term as member of congress. He has come against problems before. Didnt put up much of a fight in the last race but expect there to be calls from democrats once this becomes more official for him to step down. I reached out to gop leaders tow today and offered no response. As to whether they will calm him to step down. I dont know if they want an admitted conferen admitted felon in their conference. Is he looking alt jail time. Could be. We dont know what his plea will encompass. He will be in federal court in brooklyn at 1 00. I will be surprised if he still a member of congress by next congress. I dont see how john boehner wouldnt force him out behind scenes. He doesnt like people who do things like this in his conference. Luke, thanks as always. Do appreciate it. Social media nation has decided and were reporting here are todays top trenders vote the on by you. In ten years ron howard is going to make a movie out of this. The real deal. Theres new fall out tied to the massive cyber attack on Sony Pictures. I think it was an act of cyber vandalism. The act may cost sony upwards of 100 million. The studio will eventually release the interview. What . The New York Post reports it may release the movie for free on crackle. Com the streaming video site it owns. Haters gonna hate. We could see delays washington, northbouew york, up boston. Oh, no my family is in florida im in new york. If you live in the rockies and dreaming of a white christmas, you got it. And todays top trender, pole position. New polling suggests that Hillary Clinton is still the clear front runner for to 201661 saying they would vote for her in a possible it primarily. Hillary keeps a commanding lead. Warren up from 7 to 13 since yun june. Down from 73 in january. The closer you get to a real live election process the more critical people are going to be. Joined now by democrat strategist and political analyst and contributor at grio. Com. Bob what do the latest numbers tell us, if they tell us anything about democratic voters. That the press wants a contest and they are really going to promote one hard. Really. Yep they want one. Number two some people on the left want a contest to challenge Hillary Clinton. If you look inside the pole it is 63 of self side eye fidenti candidates want more. I believe clinton will go ought and talk about income and equality and how we make a fairer society. The fact is if you look at Hillary Clinton, she has a commanding role in this right now. Far march than she did in 2007 whether i got in a lot of trouble with the clinton people when i said i thought she was vulnerable, she could defeat herself but i dont think will happen. How does she do that. By not putting out a vision for the country, by not saying what she stands for, by acting as if she is entitled and by running as a candidate of restoration and not change. I dont think she will do any of that. She was a great candidate by 2008 when she lost the nomination. I think that is where she will start. I dont think she will repeat the mistakes she made early in the 2008 process. Do you agree . It is two points 63 to 61, and warren has gone up two points but in response to her big explosive speech she is still only at 13 where hillary has a commanding lead. So i think like bob said, Elizabeth Warren probably wont run for president. Shes said it repeatedly. They all say that and perhaps have the freedom to change their minds later but i do think we want hillary to move further to the left on issues like Social Security but also theres a notion if Elizabeth Warren remains in senate and clinton goes on to be president that team could be a powerhouse going forward. Thats my theory. Lets talk about jeb bush. He has formed a committee and is possibly running in 2016. Whats that mean for Hillary Clinton . I suppose it means if shes a nominee than we could have back to the future election clinton versus bush. The republican establishment is very much for bush. They think Chris Christie is deeply flawed if he got the nomination he would have a tough time running and look at the rest of the field and say we dont hi these folks could win. The problem is hes deviated on a couple issues, immigration reform, common Core Education standards, he could have real problems. You mentioned common core. Folks who dont follow this closely, there are folk whos are rab id about common core who have taken jeb bush to task for a couple years is common core something that could cost jeb bush a nomination or is it just something that a few folks on the fringe care about a great deal. The problem is the fringe ends up being the republican primary. Then you have common core and acts of love, undocumented immigrants bringing their family over or having children here. He will have a hard time the same way mitt romney had in 2012 and in 2008. He is moderate but has to win the primary first. So i think it will damage him going into the general in a way that, you know, you cant win. You cant win. One thing for sure he wasnt have trouble raising money. No he is the establishment choice but we will find out whether the establishment will fail this time as they have in every republican race going back to george h. Bush but it is getting closer and tighter. Mitt romney and mccain both had to move further to the right to get their nominations. Jeb bush is the strongest republican nominee, by the way, we might as well be honest but there is a lot of resistance in the republican part ji. When you say the strongest republican nominee that we can think of, theres a chance some un else is out there. There are some who said there is tremendous value in having a contested primary, not like you have three folks running and only one has a shot but a legitimate primary do you not see value in that. I think it is very valuable. I think it is important for her toestab est abablish firmly eco populous ideals and that could open up the debate and make it more progressive. Those are first two people, the first two people taking legal action to stop president obamas executive action on immigration. County sheriff and conservative lawyer tried to convince a job today that the immigration system is not broken arguing president obama violated the constitution by making changes to the immigration programs without congress approval. The judge apoopears skeptical o the skas. The judge in this case was nominated by president obama. Meanwhile republicans remain split over the new cuba policy. That move has some republicans fighting. Rand paul tweeted this. Rubio responded to that tweet on sunday. He did not hold back. Rand if he wants to become the chief chair leader of obamas Foreign Policy he has the right to do that. Im going to continue to oppose it because it will not lead to freedom and liberty for the cuban people which is my sole interest. Could you support rand paul if he were the republican nominee. I anticipate supporting whoever the republican nominee is. I am confident it is someone who has astrong view of americas role in the world and defender of freedom and important that america is engaged on the global stage. No matter how you look at it, it will be a hot topic through 2016. Joined now by our analysts let me start with this. How big of an issue is the president s new cuba policy goodigood going to be for republicans in 2016 . I think it will be a really big issue for them because what youre seeing right now they are not just pushing to the right for republican primary, they are far, far to the right not just of the American People but of the cuban population in florida. Are most americans split. You see that they are appealing to very different sectors within the community. With rubio mostly focused on appealing to the65 and over crowd and rand paul speaking for the majority of everybody else, certainly young cubanamericans. I believe the Sunshine State is with the president on this, except like ricardo just said, just a small segment of the 65 plus and the hard liners, the cuba hard liners. So the big question for 2016 will be what is the nominee going to do. Is the nominee going to go backwards after 50 plus years of doing this half decade. Are there any others besides brand paul taking a stance. It seems he is on his own in this issue. A lot of republicans are rallying behind the cuban community. I think this also points to the bigger problem not just on immigration but on all the issues that the more and more they try to appeal to the fringe element of the Republican Base that controls the primary process the more harm they are doing to the pronunciationproce election, history is repeating itself all over again. What effect will it have on voter turn out . Well, i think it may galvanize a small and dwindling sector of the Community Vote against them but by and large these changes speak to the will of the majority offer the cubanamerican community and certainly to hispanics not only south florida but throughout the state of florida who largely favor this change in policy towards cuba. We were talking about jeb bush how do you think he plays it moving forward. Hes also another hard liner. Gave a speech in miami, florida saying we need to go further to the right and be more hard lined than we have been in half decade they are all fighting for hard line approach except for senator paul. Lastly whats your take that taking skoourexecutive action t court. They are pushing to sue president obama is the policy of the Republican Party up to and including both boehner and mcconnell. More often and night it is rhetoric not actions like lawsuits. Thats what we say u they are still fighting about the affo Affordable Care to act there will be lawsuits and bills, they will stop at nothing to take away his ability to help them. Thank you for joining us. Sthanks for having us. Keep it here. Its not about how many miles you can get out of the cmax hybrid. Its about how much life you can fit into it. The ford cmax hybrid. Welcome back to the ed show. North koreas internet went completely dark today. Experts say the loss of service is consistent with a, quote, distributed denial of service attack, thats what it calls. A at a briefing earlier today at the state department, neither confirmed nor denied. Officials neither confirmed nor denied u. S. Involvement. We arent going to discuss, you know, publicly operational developments except to say that as we implement our responses, some will be seen, some may not be seen. Less than a week after cancelling the Christmas Day release of the interview, Sony Pictures says they are considering alternative ways to distribute the controversial film. Sony only delayed this. Sony has been fighting to get this picture distributed. It will be distributed. How its going to be distributed, i dont think anybody knows quite yet. But its going to be distributed. The lawyer for Sony Pictures vowing that the film will come out. At this point, the consequences of the sony cyber attack goes far beyond lost box office revenue. The United States is reviewing whether to put north korea back on its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Joining me now, former british senior officer, lets start with that list of sponsors of terror. Sudan on the list, if im not mistaken. A number of other players on the list. Iran was on the list at one point. Still on the list. What does that mean . Is being on that list enough to Deter North Korea from being bad in the future . Its a billion dollar question. Its a brilliant question. What weve got to do, weve got to look at, so what. We put them on the terror list. What are we trying to achieve . I think the, so what in the broader situation, its about sanctions. So if we look at iran, for example, being put on a terror list means that you minimize trade, you minimize all communications with that country. You restrict their assets that are operating within the u. S. Thats not going to work with north korea. North korea is already under severe sanctions which are con straining its property and its trade. And to be honest with you, thats only going to hurt the people. Right. Kim jongun has demonstrated time and time again that he doesnt care whether the masses of his people starve. Exactly. And weve got to be very careful about placing a country on a terror list, predicated on a cyber attack. The reason for that is, north korea doesnt even feature in the top ten when it comes to countries that are responsible for worldwide cyber attacks. China is actually the Biggest Country that has fallen afoul of that and the u. S. Is in the top three. So we cant conflate the issue. North korea has some serious issues going on, aspirations for nuclear capabilities, and its got some of the most severe human rights issues and criminal violations on the planet. If that is what were trying to target, lets make sure we do that for the right reasons and not disguise it under the guise of a cyber attack. We heard from the state Department Spokesman there, playing coy. Saying, were not behind the internet outage in north korea. First of all, do you buy that . And secondly, if we were, would that be the pro portional response that president obama promised . I think graduated and proportionate is right within the pair dime of cyber is also right. We shouldnt start conflating the issue by looking at Foreign Policy or sanctions. We should keep it strictly been the cyberspace. But what i do think, craig, is that moving forward, the ability to penetrate someones infrastructure in terms of cyber is based on the connectivity speed and the i. T. Infrastructure. If we look at indonesia, they have increasing internet speeds but the structure is increasingly poor. Indonesia is up there because hackers are using ip addresses out of there to attack. We just heard from david, the attorney for sony, vowing that thing is going to come out in some form or fashion. How do you think it comes out . I mean, in what fashion . In what way will folks be able to watch the interview, short of going down to 125th here and picking up a couple py in a couf weeks . No one has ever said its not going to play in the movie theater. Its just been postponed. When i saw gone girl, i saw the trailer for this. And i had no interest in watching this. But i probably will see it as a consequence of what happened here. But in terms of revenue thats been lost at the box office, thats a shortterm approach, i think in the longterm, its going to make a lot of money. Thats it for the ed show tonight. Politicsnation with reverend al sharpton starts right now. Good evening, craig. Good evening, sir. And thanks to you for tuning in. We start tonight with breaking news on the murder of two new york city Police Officers. Today, an outpouring of grief with people leaving flowers and lighting candles at the site of the shooting in brooklyn, honoring the fallen officers, rafael ramos and wenjian liu. They were shot at pointblank range on saturday while sitting in their patrol car, going about their normal business. This afternoon, new york mayor bill de blasio paid visited to the home of both officers, meeting with their families,
