We are asking them to get in their cars and drive to somewhere they normally dont do, then stand in line and vote. You know, when the push button mentality society we live in where iphones have everything at our fingertips, you mean i gotta go vote . Th thats a feeling you get when you talk to folks. The bottom line is, we have to understand what is at stake and what has happened leading up to the vote. Its scurrilous whats going on in america. The results of tuesdays midterm elections are going to come down to one thing. Wherever you go, its all about turnout. In kentucky, its all about turnout. Been in michigan, ohio, minnesota, south dakota, nebraska, iowa. Its all about turnout. Everybodys got the same story. Then turn out, if you care. There are plenty of polls and projection models that say, well, the reality is, the vote is going to be determined by who actually decides to get in their car and drive somewhere they dont normally go on a routine basis, stand in line and care about the country. Republicans have been doing everything in their power to make sure that you stay in your routine. Keep the democratic voters away from the polls. Now, if you are running for office in the state of georgia, i have to ask you, would this infuriate you . Earlier this year, in the state of georgia, organizers in the state registered a phenomenal number. 90,000 people. They packed the big house, okay . These folks had never voted before. A massive Voter Registration in the state of georgia. 90,000 people. A lot of them were people of color or under the age of 25. In august, organizers noticed, hey, theres 40,000 of those registrations that are gone. They vanished from the states data base. Now, would that make you feel really good about whats happening in your state, if that happened . Would it motivate you to go out and register more people . Nearly all of those belonged to people of color in democratic leading areas around atlanta, savannah and also columbus. Now, if you are a republican and you are a member of the party of lincoln, you should be absolutely furious that this happened. Someones right has been taken away from them because of a computer glitch. You know, we do Internet Banking in america, thats normal, but we cant vote online. I refuse to believe what happened and unfolded in georgia is a coincidence. On tuesday, a judge denied a petition to force georgias secretary of state to process the missing registrations. One judge, a man with that much power said to hell with it on the 90,000 folks. The hell with the 40,000 lost registrations. Doesnt matter, we are going to have the election in georgia anyway. It doesnt stop there. In the state of texas, a strict voter id law could disenfranchise 600,000 voters on election day. A few months ago, we were in texas and we did a town hall meeting. We did a focus group. Two a t, all the folks told us that texas is going to turn blue. The democrats have the demographics on their side. This is going to happen. Doesnt it make sense with one big swath, pass a law too take out 600,000 folks. A portion of those voters are africanamerican or hispanic. If you are wondering how hard it is to get an id, take a look at this. I have gone twice to get the volter id card. You go in may to get the required card and they are out of it . Yeah. They are out. I went this is ridiculous. You offered them now you ran out . May i went. July i went. Dont you kind of get the feeling, this election isnt about a bunch of governors trying to save their rear end and taking control of the senate which republicans want because its about power. The midterms will take shape and determine the fate of the 2016 president ial elections. What would you rather have if you are a republican candidate and the nominee for president . Would you rather have rick scott in florida overseeing the voting or Charlie Crist . Would you rather have scott walker in wisconsin or mary burke . Who would you rather have in ohio. John casic or Ed Fitzgerald . The fact is if you are a pragmatist and dont care what happens in the state, you are going to care in november of 2016 and what kind of political apparatus they set up and the governmental apparatus they set up to ensure a full and Fair Election in 2016. All those things are important. They sure as hell are. Its amazing how governor christie came to the conclusion on teachers he got rid of. Hes now an ebola expert and come to the conclusion that everybody who is running for governor against his z people are so damn corrupt he could not run an election. Rick scott, john casic, walker and snyder are overlooking the elections. Thats the only way its going to be fair. He cant find one democrat in this country who has gone along with the Voter Suppression the republicans put up state by state. Christie is right. Its an incredibly important election. Republicans want to make all the rules and the governors christie listed in the soundbyte, they have led the charge when it comes to Voter Suppression. In march, scott walker in wisconsin signed a bill eliminating absentee voting on weekends ahead of elections in wisconsin. Why would a guy on the party of lincoln do that . Hes not alone. In february, he signed bills in ohio eliminating the number of early voting and registration days. Why would a guy in the party of lincoln do that . In 2012, can we remember florida had the worst voter lines thanks to rick scott. Remember, according to the guy across the street here in new jersey, you have to have these guys in charge to have a goode election. However, this year, scott is in trouble. It explains why rick scott is starting to say stuff like this. We are going to win. If you have an absent ballot or know anybody that does, get them to vote today. Go to early voting today. Get everyone to vote. If you have a bat lot vote. Today, what we are doing is getting the vote out. We are going to make sure if you have an absent ballot to vote. You can vote next door. Go out and vote today. That is just a classic soundbyte there. Did you see rick scott standing there saying go out to vote early. Early voting is what its about. Christie is next to him about to throw up. Wait, thats not really the plan. We dont want them to do that. Settle down. Im down here stumping for you. This is about power. This is about control of the legislative body. This is about the republicans, in a timely fashion over the last four years using every legislative method they have to make sure they can massage the numbers and the turnout to get the victory and the power. Thats what this is about. Now, if you are a red blooded american, that should infuriate you. The legislation is there. The suppression is there. If someone were to register your son or daughter under the age of 25 and then all of a sudden, their name has been purged, would you feel like you have an obligation as a parent to jump into this thing . You can. Yesterday, i talked about how lawmakers have voted themselves a raise over the years. You can vote justice next tuesday. You can make sure that you get a raise, too, because there is one party that will stand with you and fight for you. That is the democrats. Thats not partisan talk. Thats a fact. Theres no democrats in america that have said, you know what . We need to cut these hours. We need to cut the polling places. We need to cut the days. We need to shut off weekends. You cant find a democrat in america that will do that. You can find a hell of a lot of republicans and they all happen to be governors and they pushed legislation to do just that. Now, they have the audacity to send christie all over the country stumping saying if you dont elect these guys, were not going to have a goode election. In 2016, he shows us the play book. In 2016, we have to have these guys in charge so we can make sure we can get florida. If rick scott is governor. We can make sure to get ohio. I have said on this program repeatedly, that one of the most important elections in this country is the secretary of states job in the state of ohio. Get your cell phones out. Listen to you and weigh out the facts whether they are republicans, democrats or independents, if they cherish the right to vote, they should vote democratic. Ed, there are seven horrible laws on the books, very bad Voter Suppression, voter id. The worst kind. You focused on texas. There are others. Every one of those, every single one of those signed by a republican governor. This is one of the biggest issues of this election, of our time and, you know, i hate the fact that people say this is an off year election. It isnt president ial. Everything is at stake, including our democracy. The right to vote and the way we send a message, real simple, we can talk about it. More important is we vote. We all vote. Everyone who cherishes that right to vote, get out there and defie the pundits who say, oh, its going to be terribly low turnout. We have the power to change it. This issue, there are many issues on the line. We know that. A fair shot agenda. Equal pay for equal work. Minimum wage. Reducing Interest Rates on college loans. All those are very important. This one, the party that stands for the right to vote is the democratic party. The party trying to suppress the vote. We saw doctor christie talk about that. We know its a fact. The republican party, it is so sad to say the party of lincoln has taken this approach. They cant win on the issues so they are trying to stop people from getting to the polls. By the way, did you hear about that 93yearold veteran who tried to vote in texas . Did you read about that . I did. He went to the polls. He goes there, he had an expired drivers license because hes 93. No good. What have power in the legislative body to do something about this on a federal level. Yes. Obviously tuesday is huge. Lets say the legislative power swings to the democrats, what happens . There are several of us that have bills. Im going to drop a new bill that combines two house bills, the right to vote act. It says okay states, if you want voter id, they have to be offered free and on time. If you are forcing someone to go by their birth certificate, you have to foot the bill. If your law is so difficult that people cant do it, they can go and vote and they can sign an affidavit they are who they are and live where they say they live under penalty of law. Its a stiff fine if anyone lies. 250,000 or five years in prison or both. So, we cannot we cannot sit back, ed. We need to hold control of the United States senate. We have to hope we can gain control of the house. Keep our losses to a minimum there. It is up to us. It is up to us. Senator, harry reid, the democratic leader, Senate Majority leader sent an email to the Progressive Change Campaign committees 1 million members and said a Republican House and senate could go beyond shutting down the government. They could waste months of our lives on impeachment. What is your response to that . Do you agree with that . No doubt. I do. I have been saying it for a long time. I have been around for awhile. I hear what is being said. I know that this is on the agenda. Theres no doubt about it. No doubt about it. That ties right into the Voter Suppression because if you keep democrats home because you dont want them to vote and they cant get to vote, you have a better shot at controlling the senate and they are not going to care about raising the minimum wage. They are not going to care about lowering student loan rates. They are not going to care about anything that matters to middle class. They will give the tax breaks to the millionaires and billionaires and pass a Voter Suppression law. Yes, they will look at impeachment. I believe that. You havent heard much from boehner. I was down in dallas and ft. Worth on monday. We saw two things, ed. Number one, a mobilization going on. You reported on it. They are commemorating it. They are calling out voter id from the head of the church saying this is racist targeting and we need to standup to it. That, you can say, is positive. Its a backlash. We saw voters who had the right documentation, went to the local id issuing agency in texas and were told, oh, we dont have ids. You have to come back later. Lets be clear. If you dont have the ids, some drive, great. Some dont. We have people who are seniors, who have a medical condition. For them, having to go two, three times to get an id to vote in 2014, when as you know, we reported we have been doing elections hundreds of times. This struck a new kind of passion with voters in texas, you think . I think so. I think this is also where Eric Holders Justice Department did win to find it was a poll tax. Senator boxer breaking news on the ed show. Shes going to introduce a bill to show we are not going to allow anything that operates like that that costs money. Texas made a show saying some can get the ids free. Some can and others cant. Theres not supposed to be a price on voting in this country. People died to get us to this point. Senator boxers intentions are well. Be aware, you have to have the legislative power to do that. Theres one party on record that would do Something Like that. Do voters in texas get that . A lot of folks did get that. You have to look, i interviewed congressman castro who wants the feds to come in, audit the impact, measure it and find out the turnout. Lets remember, something messed up that gets people mad as they look to tuesday, you have a court that said this is illegal, discriminatory, a poll tax. That has not been overturned. What the Supreme Court said is well see about that. Well let it play out. They might overturn it. In the meantime, what you need, as you said from the beginning, people need to turn out to standup to it as folks are trying to suppress the vote. Great to have you with us. Lets start with kentucky and what kind of effect do you expect its going to have . A tremendous effect. A number of things are going on. We are getting it out. We are registering people who are not registered. Early vote. Get out to the polls. Educate them, robo calls. Everybody is doing it. People are motivating people to go out and vote for your candidate. Its the biggest thing we can do. As you said earlier, if we dont get out there, we dont win. If we vote our pocketbook, whats important to us and our family, go out and vote. Its the way we win. Isnt there somewhat of a motivation knowing you can get rid of him for good . Hes been a pain in our side. Hes antiunion, hes antiworker, anti what we stand for. Against raising the minimum wage. What more can i say . If we can get rid of him and have alison grimes, it would be a victory. That is what we are trying to do. Kentucky is a key state. We are doing everything we can to get people to the polls. What is your response to that and how important is it to make sure walker is not a National Candidate with his agenda . He really is, you know, kind of a diabolical person. He comes on debates and is smooth and talks and covers up the fact he wants to take away collective bargaining for people. We have a great candidate, mary burke. People are motivated. I got back from wisconsin. People are getting everything out. The unions are working hard. You see signs everywhere. We have a chance there. Can you imagine if we knocked out scott walker and knocked out Mitch Mcconnell, it would be an earthqua earthquake. A good night at the office. A full day, a great day. The message that is being sent right now by union folks and the reason why unions are so important as i see it right now is you have the social networking and the communication amongst employees that you dont have somewhere else. How much effect does it have to get someone to go to the polls and be involved in the process . You have new media, social media. People are talking to each other, face booking or twittering. All the different things. Its a new thing. We can reach our members easier. One of the biggest things we should talk about is early voting. Theres 33 states with early voting. Im from michigan. In michigan, you get one day. 33 states allow you to vote ten days before. That is probably the most important thing. If you are a working person, you have to punch a clock. You have to be to work. If the employer makes you work late, how are you going to get to the polls . What we have to do is take advantage of early voting. When i talk to members, did you vote . You have time to vote, have you voted . Im going to vote. Some have voted. The early voting is something we can take advantage of. With all the Voter Suppression we are talking about, its our edge. Welcome back to the ed show. Scott walker is trying to hide his bad record with women. In 2012, walker repealed wisconsins equal pay enforcement act. It gave resources to employees pleading cases about discrimination. Now scott walker, it seems like hes sweating bullets and begging. The walker camp pushed out a new commercial aimed at women today. Under scott walker, Workplace Discrimination will always be illegal, for any reason. Mary burke wants to create more opportunities to sue. We want to create more opportunities for women to succeed. The commercial fails to mention how walker ripped out a support system for women facing discrimination. President obama helped remind wisconsin voters yesterday. In 2012, wisconsin repealed a statewide repeal law. Why repeal a law to make sure women are treated fairly on the job . Thats your platform . Thats your agenda . Earlier this year, it dont make no sense. Scott walker has been the most aggressively antiwoman governor wisconsin ever had. He slashed funding for womens care clinics and takes Birth Control decisions out of their hands. Walker refused to stand with women on the job. We are six days away from seeing the decision that may cost him, well, a new career. Joining me, wisconsin state senator, lena turner and wisconsin state representative, melissa sergeant. Great to have you with us tonight. Lena, lets focus in on walker and his record with women. Will this resinate . Will this be an eyeopener to voters and a motivator . I hope it will. If women do what i know they often do, to do their research and homework, they will see the repeal of the the repeal that walker did in 2012 took away their ability to go to state court, to go before a judge, to be able to ask for their case to be heard if they disagree with the Administrative Law judge. Although the Lieutenant Governor supports women and equal pay, they took away power that women would have at the state level to go to a state court to push against an Administrative Law judges decision. Thats huge. Otherwise, you have to go to federal court. Many people are not in a position, ed, to go to federal court. When that law was in place from 2009 to 2012, we did reduce discrimination in the work force and equal pay. It moved us from being, you know, at 36 to 24, i think it was. Now, since walker repealed the law, we have dropped again. Its, you know, its basically encouraged people to discriminate against women. Melissa, the argument being made by republicans in wisconsin on this is that its antibusiness. What is your response to that . Well, in fact, i know that when businesses honor and invest in their workers the businesses and the workers do better. I was born and raised in this state and, in fact, worked for my father and started my own business. I know Economic Security comes from understanding women are 40 of the primary breadwinners for the family. Their hard work needs to be paid off. We should not be moving backwards. Unfortunately, in wisconsin we have been under this administration. The republicans are antitake home pay. They dont want anything to do with minimum wage, they dont want women to have the same opportunity as men. Scott walker wont work for fair pay for women or workers. How does this play . Do you think its played into the lousy jobs numbers hes able to put up and hes far short of what was intended . He said 250,000, there are just over 100,000 when the country added 10 million jobs. What about that . Well, theres a couple things with that, ed. First of all, the jobs he added, you have to think about the income level that individuals will be at at the jobs that were created under the Walker Administration versus the jobs we lost under the Walker Administration. I would love for the research to be done under that. What we will find is walker often said he thought 7. 25 was fine or 9 an hour was fine for jobs. Thats not a living wage that people can live on. 85 of women in my community, in the black community, 85 of the money spent in our Community Comes from a woman spending it in the household and in our community. When you consider that, these are major issues for a large subgroup, which is black women coming out to vote. Thats a large group of individuals voting in the city of milwaukee. We are motivated and continuing to knock on doors. I think they are huge issues that will resinate on november 4th. Melissa, how do you view this ad by the Lieutenant Governor . I mean, it has as breath of desperation to it, as i see it. Your thoughts . I agree. You know, i think that ultimately, we continue to show in wisconsin that Governor Walker and his administration is highly divisive. They, one of the first things they did when they gained control of the state was to repeal the equal pay act. Really . Thats not how you move things forward in a community. The women in our state are very important. They are mothers as well as breadwinners. They have been attacked time and time again under this administration making it harder for women to have access to health care, making it harder for women to vote, knowing that women should be paid the same amount as a man for the same pay. Unfortunately, this Current Administration does not see that and the western states, we are the last. It is time for a change. We need to honor our workers and build our jobs and support our families and let everyone have access to the american dream. Finally, senator taylor, president obama, michelle obama, the first lady, they know where wisconsin is. Is this going to help mary burke . Shes not running away from president obama, other democrats are. What do you make of it . I dont think its going to hurt at all. Not only did the first lady come to milwaukee, she came to madison, the area that representative sergeant represents. Yesterday, president obama was here and there was no concern what so ever by the thousands of people inside the building and the thousands of people who had to be turned away because there was just not enough space.
