This is the story that the nfl wants to go away. But is it going to go away with all the conversation across america. The ray rice story doesnt look like it will be going away soon. Today bring more bad news for Roger Goodell. A source close to the ray rice story told nbc news that rice says he described to goodell what he did in the elevator during a june meeting he had with the commissioner. Rice says he accepted responsibility and admitted to the commissioner he hit his then fiance. Espn has four sources back up this claim. One source said ray didnt lie to the commissioner. He told the full truth to goodell. He said he was sorry and that it wouldnt happen again. A second source said he told the truth. This is a public lynching of ray. This directly contradicts what Roger Goodell told cbs news earlier this week. When we met with ray rice and his representatives, it was ambiguous about what actually happened. Ambiguous. Thats a big word legally. Goodell also said the latest tmz sports video was different than what rice told him. This latest report comes after a Law Enforcement source told the ap he sent a copy of the video to the nfl in april. The ravens took the field last night for the First Time Since ray rice has been suspended. Some fans continued to support the former running back. I love ray rice. Hes done a lot for baltimore even though i dont condone what i did. I will never turn my jersey in. Without ray rice we wouldnt have won the super bowl. I love ray. He is a good man. He made a mistake, what can sigh say. I have people in my family that have been battered. Some people have to learn and you do something wrong and you make up for it. Hes a good man. I wear the jersey in support of ray rice. I love ray rice. Im sorry. I dont believe in abuse but she struck him first and any woman who can hit a man can be hit back. Sorry. Thats my belief. Its never, never, never the womans fault. No man has a right to raise a hand to a woman. No means no. So this is where we are in america. We have a difference of opinion on Domestic Violence. Depending on who you are, and who you work for, you can gather a fan base that will forgive you and say haste, move on. Its okay. And were not going to force any changes. It looks like some fans live inside an nfl bubble. They will stand behind their team and their players at all costs. Meanwhile, other nfl players are now the target of public scrutiny because of this ray rice situation. For instance, San Francisco 49er tackle ray mcdonald was arrested on us is petiti on us isspection of Domestic Violence. Panthers defensive end greg hardy was convicted on two counts of Domestic Assault against his girlfriend. A jury trial is scheduled to begin in november. On wednesday the panthers owner became emotional when addressing Domestic Violence. I would be remiss if i did not acknowledge an issue weighing heavily on our sport and our society. When it comes to Domestic Violence my stance is not one of indifference. I stand firmly against Domestic Violence. Plain and simple. Richards sentiment, the owner of the team appears to be far different from his actions. Greg hardy continues to practice and play with that nfl Football Team, the panthers. He is expected to play on sunday against the detroit lions. Mcdonald and the 49ers he has not been convicted and hardy is appealing his conviction. But you have to wonder how committed the National Football league is to combatting Domestic Violence when both players will be on the field on sunday. What is going to turn the worm on this story . Is it going to be very intriguing this weekend. Another weekend of nfl action. Will the story fade away . Who will keep it alive and what sponsor is going to step up and tell the National Football league you ought to take a hard look at what youre doing when it comes to Domestic Violence. Clean up your act, change the rules and throw some players out. Instead what we have is a culture in this country a fan base and machine so strong that women go to Football Games with jerseys of the guy that was the perpetrator, a jersey of the man who is now out of the league and supporting him to come back and go so far to say i understand he made a mistake. They dont talk about restitution or talking about the nfl changing things. Until we get to that point im not so sure that everything or anything is going to change. The nfl needs to do more. If richardson the owner of the panthers is really serious hell have a personal conference oneonone with the other owners in the nfl and ask them what do you want to do about this. Tonights question do you think raven fans who continue to support ray rice contribute to the problem . Text a for yes and b for no. Let me bring in terrence moore. Also with us tonight terry oneil president of the National Organization of women and the National Organization of women has called for the commissioner of the nfl, Roger Goodell to step down. And i want to address you with that first if i can, terry. Do you feel stronger and now more than ever now that there is more contradiction about the meeting and what was said and the videotape . Absolutely. I think that Roger Goodells credibility is going down by the day, frankly. And i think that its really obvious that he is trying to he keeps trying to get two things first make the story go away. Do some things, have a new policy, try to get this thing to go away. And second if it wont go away hes really trying to focus this on ray rice. But as you pointed out the nfl has a series of Domestic Violence incidents it has responded to poorly. There are over 50 of them. And in all of them, Roger Goodell has failed to exercise the kind of leadership we would expect from an institution like the nfl. Thats why we are saying that Roger Goodell needs to step aside you and his successor must appoint an independent investigator that will review all the Domestic Violence issues that the nfl community has seen and offer solutions. You have to recognize there is a problem. Terrence, where is the game changer here or is this just another day at the office for the nfl . Lets start with this, ed. This goes to something i talked about on your radio show earlier this week and it goes back to janay rice and about these women fans and fans in general. The old Tammy Wynette stand by your man thing. I went through that in atlanta, georgia during the michael vick situation with the dog fighting thing. If you were a person who dared say anything about michael vick through that process the majority of the Atlanta Falcons fans here will look at you as lower than scum not the guy who was strangling dogs, electrocuting dogs, beating zogs, killing dogs but you and its all because these people just want guys who can help them play. The sound clip you played, he helped us win a super bowl as long as ray rice is one of the most productive running backs and is able to play thats all the fans care about. Its sad but true. And terry oneil isnt that a sad state of affairs for women in this country to hear sound like that . I was really stunned that they would equalize that out because this guy played football for their team in the nfl. Your thoughts . You know, i think two things. First of all there, is an awful lot of absence of information about the dynamics of Domestic Violence. And violence against women. And i think that youre seeing that in some of the things that the fans say. Secondly i think leadership matters. It is not the job of the fans to fix whats wrong with the nfl. It is it is the leaderships job. Is it the owners job. You have the owner of the ravens being interviewed and explaining that he didnt take action sooner against ray rice because he, the owner, thought it was just an openhanded slap and she was drunk and had her head too close to the wall and thats how she got unconscious. This is the mindset of a man who doesnt get it, doesnt understand Domestic Violence. Thats the kind of leadership that is the opposite of what we need in leadership. And i, frankly, im not going to judge the fans. I think we need to go to the leaders and say if you cant lead, get out of the way and put in someone who can. Can i add something that . Go ahead. First of all, Roger Goodell is not going to resign. He is making 44 million a year. Hes not going to walk away from that. But having said that, right now there is a 60 chance he is forced out. And i was talking to a source of mine who worked in the nfl office for decades, okay . He knows Roger Goodell very well. And on the Positive Side he says he finds it hard to believe that Roger Goodell would lie about whether or not he saw this videotape. On the other hand the source told me there is no way possible that a video goes to the nfl office and somebody of import did not see that. So i believe whats going on here is the Ronald Reagan plausible deniable thing. Roger goodell may not have seen that video but he had his underlings see it and they told him what is going on. And i dont think is it going to be a complete report because of all the things we talked about in the past. Two nfl owners basically in charge of this thing, but there a will be enough smoking guns that they may have to force him out. I think there is a decent chance of that. The thing that is so intriguing about this is there has been a pattern of behavior in the league that has been accepted. This is the most high profile incident. Its the videotape. Now even when in 2012, the chiefs linebacker, Javon Belcher killed his girlfriend and himself there wasnt anything to do about Domestic Violence because they were both gone. And suicide of course overtook Domestic Violence there. But it started with, obviously, Domestic Violence. And it turned into a murder and the statistics show thats exactly what happens in our society. So, is it the tape in this case, isnt it, terrence . It is. And let me tell you Something Else that no one is talking about. It is a major thing. Cheerleaders, nfl cheerleaders have sued the nfl because they have been getting less than minimum wage. They have been treated like slaves and the people who brought this lawsuit were the raiderettes. I know something about the raiderettes. I used to cover the raiders and the attitude of the organization was and it was justified a lot of the woman who were raiderettes were just glad to be there close to the team and they felt they could take advantage of the situation, the raiders and the nfl. Now were in the era of oprah the nfl has that attitude they had 35 years ago and this is when its going to come back to bite them and were seeing it right now with the women groups. I would say that if the commissioner makes it through the weekend, hes home free and the pressure will be off and it will take some sponsors. It will take an Economic Impact on the league before the owners move on this. The culture of the league is not to change the commissioner. Once they get a guy making them billions of dollars making sure things like this can go away theyre safe. They dont have the culture of a revolving door. I think its going to take sponsors. Its going to take a fan backlash which i dont think is going to happen at this point. And terry oneill the only thing at this point is if womens groups get together and put social pressure on the nfl somehow. Is that going to happen . Sure. We are now engaged in this fight and we are going to stay with it. Let me say this and i urge all the football fans out there to ask this question, which of the owners and leaders of the nfl ask the most important question in any whenever an incident of Domestic Violence happens . And the most important question is this. Is she safe and what are we doing to ensure she stays safe. If they dont ignore all over questions they are doing the wrong thing. Im hoping that the fans demand that happens. Right now Roger Goodell has an insider window dressing investigation that we dont think is very serious but its i would like for even that investigation, mr. Muller should ask the question when did the leaders of the nfl ask if janay rice was safe . Did they care or try to blame her from the outset with alcohol involved. Can i add something to that point . Go ahead. That same nfl insider told me that the likely scenario will be after this report, its going to come out that, again, that this lady that got the dvd, she never passed it on and he said the nfl is just donate a large sum of money to different womens groups and call it a day in their mind. According to the local fox affiliate in houston, texas, minnesota viking running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted on a charge of reckless or negligent injury to a child. The charges stem from allegations peterson beat his young son. Petersons attorney has declined to comment. Peterson practiced with the vikings this afternoon. They are scheduled to play the new England Patriots this weekend. Im joined by terrence moore. This is yet another chapter, an embarrassment for the nfl and this was a story, this investigation that was way under the rug. This comes from nowhere. Did you know this was being investigated by a grand jury . I dont think anyone was. It is raining men in the nfl and not in a good way. And heres another one. This is another star in the nfl. Not just any player. Its a star player. When you start putting all this stuff together youve got to think that the 32 owners who hired Roger Goodell will have to say to themselves we will have to have a sack official lamb here. Its not just Roger Goodell but the 32 owners allowing these things to take place on their teams. I cant stress this enough. These teams no everything. Theyve got the best security on the face of the earth. They know when a player breathes. So they understand these type of things. And for a guy like peterson still playing, for greg hardy and ray mcdonald still playing it tells you they havent cared up to this point. But hopefully this will open some eyes. Lets talk about that nfl security. This story wasnt anywhere and all of a sudden the most prolific running back in the National Football league is now being under indictment by a grand jury for negligent behavior for beating his young son . Doesnt this speak to how the nfl can keep things underwrap and how stories just do not leak out . No question about it. Like we were talking about spygate. The story about spygate about Bill Belichick illegally taping teams is when the nfl gathered the evidence they destroyed them. And then before a the Senate Judiciary Committee Just looked at him and smugly said, i mean it was the right thing to do. This is what were dealing with here. When you think about it its very scary. Adrian peterson indicted on negligent injury to a child by a texas grand jury. That story being carried by a fox affiliate in houston, texas at this hour. John, is this something that could maybe put real pressure on the redskins in the nfl or is this just a side bar story that might not go anywhere . It might not go anywhere but every voice hurts. Another log on the fire makes this flame grow brighter. You dont have to be a fullblooded indian to be offended by this. Its the equivalent of waving a Confederate Flag around. Its a way of saying i dont care about your feelings. And if the indians had known this would have happened maybe they wouldnt have fed the pilgrims in the first thanksgiving. Even if the commissioners words are an empty statement, it is damage. And dan snyder needs to send ray rice a canned ham for making him the second most hated man in the nfl. The public pressure was the best course of action to get the name change. It might be the best course of action so far. Sponsors of course are respond to some radio stations that carry the redskins. What is going to move an nfl owner in a select society of 32 billionaires to make a move like this . What will it take, as you see it . Ultimately as has been mentioned many times it is going to be economic pressure. Its not the redskins alone. This is part of an overall composite of caveman behavior. Cris collinsworth says that the nfl appeals to the caveman in us all. If that is true, Roger Goodell is the best nfl commissioner of all time. He is the caviest of the caveman. He is captain caveman. He did nothing about serial bullier Richie Incognito or about the Philadelphia Eagles safety who called black people the n word and did little about ray rice until the video came out. This is a conglomerate of cavemannish behavior and that is what needs to change. And that is what is going to drive a market shift that is going to cause change for the redskins as well as some of these other procedures that need to be in place. Ive never done an nfl game back in the day. But it sure seems like the announcers are reeled in on what they can say and what they cant say. They all sound the same to me. They all tell us how great these players are and you will never see anything like this in the nfl and the best route ever run and this running back is one of the best in the league. Everybody in the nfl is the best in the league. Its like they are told this has to be said and the critique is very, very slim. So if you have nfl commentators who say they will not use the teams name on air do wheelers comments embolden others to take a stand as well . And if the redskins are not being pressured by the league, why wouldnt they tell the announcers to go ahead and use the name . What do you make of all this . I think these things move glacierly. And they have not done much about longterm head injuries in the nfl and ignores this tape since april. They have to be dragged into 21st century and every new voice helps with this. There are no empty gestures whatsoever. You know your ethnic group has been you will never see the harlem darkies take on the blueeyed devil honkies. Its not going to happen. But we are becoming more moral as a society and inching into the 21st severalry. If i need good moral pr this week, id weigh in on this. We just played sound earlier in the broadcast of fans supporting the running back in question, ray rice. With the baltimore ravens. And now a recent poll conducted by espn showed only a quarter of people want the Washington Redskins to change their name. Its almost, hey, dont mess with my Football Team or players. We have this mindset in society right now. What are people missing in this debate . They are missing the same thing they have always missed. I equate this redskins fiasco with segregation where people were convinced that separate equated to equal. And in hindsight we realize that is absurd. But at the time it made since. People right now think this is somehow honoring us native people and there are a lot of native people saying this is doing no such thing and neither is this group of powerful white men who are speaking for us and speaking for our interest and trying to tell us in the words of saying they are paying on our head and calling it rain. There is a sell job going on, folks the day after president obama laid out his plan to destroy isis, the cia assessment put the number of Islamic State fighters at between 20,000 and 31,500 people which is higher than a previous estimate of 10,000. Quite a difference. But the night after president obamas address the Republican Party started fanning the fire of fear. Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson told me on this Program Thursday he has a different perspective from his party. The hype about this group is phenomenal. I frankly find it difficult to believe. Great powers like the United States taking counsel of their fears is the first step to destruction. We do not need to fear these people in the way the media and others are hyping it and people from my own party like linzie graham and john mccain. Joining me tonight, the National Security expert also with us patrick murphy. Contributor who was the first veteran of the iraq war to serve in congress. Good to have you with us tonight. Joe, you first. Why would the white house have the president why would the president give a speech to the American People and the next day numbers change . Off an Intelligence Report when you know he is looking for support from the congress. The timing of this is suspect as i see it. Your thoughts . It is suspect but it is perfectly reasonable. We have seen stories for weeks that the fighters are flocking into isis. They have seized a large block of territory and control the lives of 4 or 5 Million People in those parts of syria and iraq. You expect some growth. But the point is well taken even at 30,000 this is a Formidable Force and wellfunded combat hardened and savvy force but this is not the mon goal hoards. This is not the end of western civilization. They have tried to seize and hold land. America is not good at counter in surgesy but defeating a small land army this is what we know how to do. As an american taxpayer and a guy who does the news im confused. I dont know how good, how wellresourced and dangerous isis is. Theyre growing one day. Theyre not a threat to the homeland the next day. We have to go to congress to get more resources. If we dont have a coalition we cant take these guys down. Are there mixed signals here or am i overplaying this . You are right. There are mixed signals here and thats because, frankly, we have isis, who they are a horrible organization and a Sunni Terrorist Group but they are in a battle right now with some shia including folks from iran trying to prop up the iraqi forces. So what i have an issue with is that youre having folks down in washington from the Republican Party saying we need boots on the ground. That is the litmus test. The air strikes are not enough. Coalition voting is not enough. That is not the answer. Getting involved in a religious civil war is not the answer. I understand we have to take them out but we need to have an objective and an end game and there isnt really clear right now to be honest with you. Yeah. There clearly is no end game because we dont know what were getting into. So i think the president and National Security people should say we will do whatever it takes. It might take boots on the ground but it night not. No one wants to put boots on the ground. But the fact of the matter is we dont know what were dealing with. Thats the conclusion i have to come to. So everything should be on the table. Joe, there is no doubt that this country is war torn and weary of it all and it seems to me if this is such a bad group and they are growing in numbers that the intel report says why dont we say it is a war . Why not call it what it is. Its an extreme counterterrorism operation that is taking place. Its like they are afraid to use bush language here. Are the obama people having a hard time telling it what it is . You heard the spokespeople calling it a war. I think we should call it what it is we are at war with isis. But i feel deeply ambivalent about this adventure. And i think you do, ed. Thats a good thing. We have seen what happens with military adventurism in the middle east. There was no al qaeda in iraq before we invaded iraq and created this terrorism threat. Obama is trying to clean up the mess the Previous Administration left it. But he is a reluctant warrior. He is not look for this fight. The fight came to him and came to us. Isnt that the kind of leader you want, someone who is stingy with american lives and resources, reluctant to go to war and acts carefully. We dont have a clear idea how this ends. Thats one of the reasons we are proceeding so cautiously. Patrick, who are the syrian moderates . Who are we arming over there . Now they have a fight on two fronts. They have to fight alassad and isis. We dont even know who is on our side, do we . Its the Free Syrian Army and the problem is that they are with us now but may not be two years or five years or ten years from now. And us getting involved in a religious civil war. Isis is a bad group. According to the cia they have tripled in size to 30,000 at the top level. But still, you know, i understand the military Industrial Complex are pushing and pushing to get us engaged but it cant be a coalition of just european nations coming together to get in the middle of this. It has to be the regional players there. I know what youre saying, but i think america has to realize that the military Industrial Complex did not cut two americans heads off. And i think there is a moral component to all of this that we have to come to grips with that this is what these people do. And if they are growing in size then i dont want anything in limitation. Were going to take them out. I feel a lot better with that. But that didnt mean we have to put boots on the ground right now. And so, and i do think the president needs to cant rely i agree. You agree with that . Go ahead. Ed, i agree with that. But what we want so see as far as the American Public is to make sure this is well thought out. We havent paid for the last iraq war. We have 29,000 troops in afghanistan and a suicide rate of 22 veterans that commit suicide every day. If we do it we have to do it the right way and the Broad Spectrum of American Power comes away with a Clear Mission and end state and thats what the americans want to hear. And joe, where the numbers that are growing by this intel report now over 31,000. Can air strikes do the job . Or is that as casual sex as one former military officer said . Air strikes alone cannot win this war. But you see the decisive role they can play. But you have to have the Ground Troops going in and holding the land. And to do that you need a political settlement. Thats the course. Thats the way the president s trying to thread this needle. A lot of things have to go right. It is threading a needle, no doubt. According to multiple media reports, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted on a charge of reckless or negligent child injury to a child. Nbc news has not militantsly confirmed this report. It was received earlier this year by Montgomery County sheriffs. They said hes been cooperative with them. The Montgomery County told espn peterson has benot been arreste. Sourcers tell tmz the alleged victim a male child who was visiting peterson in may at his home in texas. Sources say the child returned home to his mother in minnesota who noticed injuries and took the child to a doctor. A short time later the doctor contacted authorities to report peterson.
