Ferguson, missouri, one for the archiv archives. Intense protests after 18yearold Michael Brown was shot and killed by police. Congress has been on vacation. There hasnt been a lot of town hall meetings. Why is that . When your Approval Rating is in the toilet, why would you want to go see the public . Lawmakers went home before addressing the immigration crisis. That is not good for republicans. Tonight, we are going Start Talking about the dream and how republicans in congress continue to vote against the interests of latino americans. Lets take it back to august 1st when 212 republicans voted to end president obamas deferred actions for childhood arrival programs or daca. It never saw the light of day on the floor. Basically, it was a symbolic vote so republicans could go home and tell their constituents, you see, we are against president obamas amnesty program. Well, the president started through his executive order powers back in 2012 to address the issue. It allows children brought to the United States illegally by their parents to get work permits and avoid deportation. Its not their fault. Daca helped 550,000 young, undocumented workers to stay and work here in the United States. Of course, thats what they want to do. They want to work. Now, one member of congress who had no problem voting against it was paul ryan. Ryan, of course, in the eyes of some is the golden boy who recollects was allegedly looking to run for president in 2016. I think he has a heck of a shot, if he gets it nomination. Saturday, he was confronted bay group of dreamers at a book signing event in florida. The wisconsin congressman and head of the Budget Committee in the house had no problem simply ignoring the questions. A couple weeks ago you voted for [ inaudible ] have a wonderful evening, i appreciate it. Thanks, guys. I want you to read the book. Maam, if i could have you [ inaudible ] i actually read your book. Who has a deadline on a book signing event . Is the schedule that packed, congressman . This was an opportunity and we all know that the Republican Party is having a hard time with people. We all know the Republican Party has demographic issues and here is a guy who allegedly wants to be president who had an opportunity to talk to a younger american and say this is what i believe in. Not only do i want you to read my book, but im going to tell you facetoface, this is what i want you to do. He couldnt do that. Thats not leadership. Ryan supported Immigration Reform and even the dreamers. Thats the way it is. Why the rush at the book signing event. Read my book, read my book. He said hes against amnesty, but his words on his website tell us something different. He says we need to find a way forward for the dreamers. These are unauthorized immigrants whose parents brought them here at children. They didnt break the law, their parents did. Theres your answer, paul, come on. Engage. This is what the younger demographic wants. He couldnt do it because maybe you dont believe it. He wanted to find a way forward. Now hes voting against the dreamers. Hey, we got a flipflop here. Last year, ryan even appeared with congressman gutierrez in chicago, calling for comprehensive Immigration Reform. The atmosphere celebrating this unlikely coalition. Republican congressman paul ryan, democratic congressman gutierrez who agreed on Immigration Reform. Its time to fix this broken system for the interest of our country. Whats wrong with that . Can say it then, not now . Ryan is trying to distance himself from the Immigration Reform and the dreamers. He knows eric cantor lost his job for supporting Immigration Reform. He knows supporting dreamers could cost him a president ial nomination. Cant have that. Before the august 1st vote to end daca, congressman gutierrez had no problem calling out republicans saying where are you . Michele bachmann and ted cruz are writing the script for the Republican Party, a script filled with ugly and mean policies that dmonize children. You were saying all the children should get green cards and citizenship. Now, late on a friday night, you are going after the dreamers who have known no other country but this one. Late on a friday night. Slip it on in there so the folks dont Pay Attention to it. Paul ryan is walking thin line on Immigration Reform. He doesnt want to answer hard questions or get any actuality facetoface. He is running for president. You cant do that and be for reform. If i had to bet on one horse in the race for the republicans, it would be this guy. Thats right. Unlike other republican hopefuls, hes not under indictment. Hes not under investigation. Most of all, hes been vetted. Hes not a problem for republicans. The fact is, when he was on mitt romneys ticket, he came away unscathed. It was no big deal there. Hes a clean gene and hes conservative. This is what the conservatives have been looking for, a guy thats not going to cause them a problem, a guy that wants reform, a guy that can backtrack on issues, depending on where the money is and a guy who is going to be a ruthless budget cutter. This is exactly what republicans are looking for. And this is what the corporatists want and the big money donors. Now all ryan has to do is one thing, distance himself from the same immigration policy that cost eric cantor his job. His president ial campaign hasnt started and we have him in a flipflop. I dont know why he voted the way he did on august 1st after visiting with congressman gutierrez. The reporters said they found something they could agree on. When pushed with the question on his book tour, the only thing he could say is read my book. Actually, i think its the only job hes had. Get your cell phones out. We have about 52. We have 26 affiliates over the country. 26 affiliates around the country. So, you went to see paul ryan. Why did dwrou that . We heard he was doing a book signing. I read the title was the way forward. I wanted to find out if it was the way forward by taking away daca and deporting germans like myself. You were curious because of the way he voted. Do you know where he stands on Immigration Reform . As far as it goes, sir, i dont think Immigration Reform is something we are pushing for as a network. We are pushing for administrative relief. We know where republicans stand because all they have done for the past year is vote on legislation that criminalizes my community, is something that will deport me and take away daca. Daca has clearly affected you. Whats it meant to you personally . I have been able to work. I havent felt that fear of having to look over my shoulder of being deported every day. But, unfortunately, thats something my parents still face. Every day i worry ill come home to an empty apartment because they may be deported back to the philippines. How long have you been in the United States . 14 years now. 14 years. And im asking this question for news content, certainly not to offend you. You feel like an american . In your heart and your soul, this is your country, is that how you feel . I was raised here. I grew up in the United States. I lived in florida, tampa, florida, i lived in maryland, all over the country. This is just the place i know and call home. Okay. So, this obviously is personal to you and your family. Now, you are confronting the chairman of the house Budget Committee, a man who has written a book his way forward. You ask him a question and he says read the book. What is your response . I read what his stance was in the book. I can see what is on the republicans agenda. They dont plan to move on immigration, which is why united we dream has been pressuring president obama to go big on immigration, to expand the action, which has been so successful. Expand it to my mother and father and dreamers not eligible for it. They face the fear of deportation every day. Thats the reality we face. Ray, you were curious why he voted against daca. You wanted an answer. Did you get one . He decided to ignore me and have Police Escort me out. Its hard not to hear what his position is on an issue like deportation because it affects me and millions of dreamers who have dava. We all know republicans have one thing on their agenda. To take away daca and deport people like myself. How did you feel when the police, you know, did grab your arm and walked you out . You did what you were expected to do in their eyes. How did that make you feel . Here is the video tape of that . We are playing it now. How did that make you feel . It was upsetting because i just wanted to hear a yes or no. Not being able to get that answer was a little bit frustrating. At the same time, i knew that it would be something along those line that is he would avoid it. The two dreamers before me got the same answer. He said read the book. Congressman ryan, we read your book, we just want an answer. We want the same answer from a member of congress who decides to step in the way of our parents freedom and justice and our dava. Thank you for joining us. How will ryan back off Immigration Reform play in florida . You have been around the political arena some 40 years. How does a piece of video play like that and does it matter to republicans . Well, you know, they have made a political calibration, in effect. They have that republican autopsy where they say we have to embrace more people, e havent done this right. Thats why we lose president ial elections. Now the autopsy is dead. They have made a col cuelation to say fear cycles. We dont want to upset the extreme base with the most moderate or modest plan. Pull it off the table. Forget about compromises in the senate and basing and guessing and risking very highly. I think this is a way to regain the u. S. Senate and get enough speed. They are thinking, hey, we have to keep our folks not from sitting home, but to vote. We cant do Immigration Reform. Ryans part of that. Frankly, its been all over the issue. In florida, an emerging hispanic population. Our job is to remind folk what is the Republican Party stance is or how it doesnt exist. Your thoughts on this . You think paul ryan is afraid to talk about it because of loss . Absolutely. I want to talk about dissection with numbers. Here in miami, the largest voting population in florida has seen a 20 increase in voting. 85 of it was hispanic. 2 registered republican. During the last president ial outcome, which is what its about, the outcome the president shows, when people cast their ballot, miamidade saw 131 increase in democrat and negative 28 in republican outcome. What does that say . Hispanics are shunning the republican agenda in large numbers. For 85 increase of hispanics to be registered and only 2 republican. Thats huge. Why would paul ryan go to florida and act like this when an opportunity was presented in front of him to win people over, explain what he is about. Instead, he has Law Enforcement take the kid out and the other kids as well when he could have won people over . Hes got to win his nomination. You have to swing so far to the right. Hes got to be the Tea Party Darling to win the partys nomination. Its not going to win him a general election. Its not going to win him or anyone a general election. Whats happening here is Republican Party is becoming more and more extreme and is forgetting about the middle class america. Its forgetting about the middle of the road people and forgetting about the minoritiem. Another demographic in florida is going to give him a hard time, thats Senior Citizens unless they want the Voucher Program to go through medicare. How does that play out . On the same book tour in florida, he lied. They said are you going to protect medicare. He gave every excuse to say yes, which, of course, hes not. He wants to change the entire system as he voted to defund the dreamer kit. You know, you cannot win the republican nomination unless you are very, very extreme. They are playing short term ball, not long term. When they embrace hispanics, they have a shot. They are kissing the president ial cycle goodbye. If democrats retain that in 16, that will be gone to republicans for a generation. He looks like an angel compared to rick scott, doesnt he . Hes not under investigation or indictment. Thanks for watching tonight. The threat of isis hit home last week with the murder of james foley. Now they are beating drums for reaction from theitis against i sis. Calling the group an imminent threat, the hawks know the American People are battle wary. They are trying to fuel an appetite for war by pedalling fear again. This is not like the earthquake in san francisco. All of this could have been avoided. What i want to hear from our commander and chief is he has a strategy to finish isis off. One of the problems is its gone unabbated for two years. That draws people from britain to across europe and the United States to go and join the fight. Lets not forget there are thousands of terrorists with foreign passports. Theres no doubt about this british young man and 100 american that is are already over there and the thousands of europeans who are have been radicalized who will come back to attack us. Thats what makes it so dangerous. They are one plane ticket away from u. S. Shores. Thats why we are concerned about it. If we dont deal with it its going to come home to roost. Do they have the capability to hit the homeland . I would say yes. Joining us tonight, congressman of california. Good to have you with us. Whats your response to this kind of ramped up rhetoric that we are getting . Im not here to say to the American People tonight that isis isnt a problem, but it sure is something we are getting the same old 20022003 ramped up talking points. Do you think the American People are getting a fair description of whats actually happening . Not from those fellas. Theres no doubt isis is a threat and remains a threat and boko haram and others. There are many that are threatening along the way in kidnapping and bombing. Fortunately, we havent had much of that except the issue with the item in boston. We need to be alert and on our guard always. We also need to understand that our government, the president and our military is taking action. If you want to find out what that action is, ask the folk that is came under the attack of the american war as they try to take the mosul dam or move on to erbil. We are there and providing a very, very important moment for the iraqis, for the kurds and the other threatened countries in that area to get their act together and all of us together deal with the isis. Theres no way we can do it by ourselves. In concert with those countries and those elements, we can and will succeed. I hear john mccain is a bitter man for losing the election in 2008. He claims if we left a residual force in iraq and come to a Security Forces agreement, isis wouldnt be where we are now. If we had never gone into iraq, isis would not exist today. Lets get to where we got off the track, went into iraq for reason that is were, at least, not true, if not outright fraudulent and wound up totally destabilizing that country and the region around it. Thats where you have to start the discussion. When you have the chairman of the house saying one plane ticket away from hitting america, whats changed . Hasnt that always been the case . I mean for us to be individual lent and on guard, has our security changed since isis has become more powerful and resourceful . No. We are continuing to do the same thing we did before. Good intelligence. We had a shoe bomber. That was dealt with. There are many different kinds of threats. We need to be very much on our guard. We need to have the intelligence overseas and we need to have the security on the airlines in and out of this nation. We also need to be aware that we have home grown terrorists in our own nation. Not because they have gone off to iraq to fight, but because they are here and disaffected for any number of reasons. We have to be on guard along the line. Be very, very careful about the slippery slope to war. You want to be very careful. We want revenge. Its an emotion to be sure. To go to war on revenge, dont do that. Go to war if you must because you are seriously threatened at the moment. Theres a problem. That problem can and is now being dealt with with air strikes and pulling together the countries and those who are threatened by isis and al qaeda in the middle east. Thats certainly involves the gulf states, some of whom continue to support financially isis and al qaeda. We have to pull those folks away from that, make sure they no longer do that because ultimately, they, too, will be at risk if this cancer continues to grow. At the moment, we stabilized the situation, at least in iraq, giving the Iraqi Government a chance to organize itself, which it is doing. New government in place by the tenth of september, hopefully. No longer al maliki, but a broader based government that has the opportunity to pull the sunnis back in and have a united government. Will it happen . Lets be hopeful. Finally, we hear senators graham and mccain saying we cant just hit iraq. We cant just hit isis in iraq, we have to go into syria. Your response to that . Its the same as a couple weeks ago when asked this question. They are willing to bomb everybody, any place. Tough be careful. Syria has an air defense system, a very robust system. It happens to have been supplied by the russians. Are we going to go in with our airplanes and put our people at risk . We need to be aware. Syria is not iraq and they have their own defense system. Be cautious and be careful. There are things we can do and things we have done. We tried to get our hostages back with a very specific effort with our special forces. It didnt work. There are things we can do. Watch out. You send airplanes into a place with sophisticated air defense systems, i think we want to be cautious. Congressman, good to have you with us tonight. Governor scott walker needs to do damage control as i see it on his fund raising reputation. There could be trouble on the horizon. Newly released documents show he solicited donations during the 20112012 recall election. Allegations are growing more serious and the record shows. One of the group that is donated money to Wisconsin Club for growth was an Iron Ore Mining company that contributed 700,000. The Company Later won approval from walker to streamline regulations for a massive iron ore mine in one of the most environmental regions in wisconsin. They prohibit that. Scott walker denies any wrong doing. The documents were part of a legal wrangling over a john doe investigation into fund raising abuses during the reall election in 2011 and 2012. There is more information out this day. The journal sentinel is reporting scott walker illegally coordinated with two National Groups on political advertising in a way that went further than previously known. The two groups are an arm of the republican governors association, the other is the leadership committee. Lets turn to mike, the state chair of the Democratic Party of wisconsin and ruth, editorinchief for the progressive magazine. Mike, you first. Theres three groups. This is reporting from a newspaper that has been supportive of governor walker. What does this mean . Does walker not know the law or just shown a disregard for the regulations on the books in wisconsin. How do you see it . Well, listen, i think we are seeing more and more concerning allegations and in fact, in some cases would appear to be statement that is scott walker doesnt seem to think the law applies to him. We see it in the 700,000 from the Iron Ore Mining company. They give that money and scott walker gives them what they want. Its a case of pay to play activity. Anyone thats been around wisconsin knows this mine is very contentious. Theres a bipartisan plan to put in environmental safeguards to have it operate. Scott walker ran through the agenda and want to think the 700,000 walker got from them was part of the reason why. Ruth, this now appears to be Standard Operating Procedure for the governor of wisconsin with multiple groups involved here, what do you make of it . It is stunning. We never had a governor running around raising money for outside groups. The email states, the reason the finance adviser stated the reason he wants people to give money for the club for growth is they can give undisclosed amounts, any amount, unlimited. The donors are not disclosed. Its a clear effort on the part of walker himself to work to coordinate with the group. That same adviser said we had problems in the past with the outside groups. We need to streamline it and go through a group. That group is advised by r. J. Johnson, walkers chief political strategist. What they are doing is saying we need unlimited amount of money, coordinate on what the message is and we can protect owners from having their names disclosed and contribute to the group. He did a great job, he raised a lot of money. What is the legal path here . You have the republicans running the state. Well, i mean, there are, you know, this is working its way through the courts. I think its important to remember, some of the folks, the Government Accountability board that regulates finance in the state is clear coordinating outside of groups violates the Campaign Finance law what walker did. Ifts run by retired judges, some republicans some democrats. There are a lot of republicans who dont want to see wisconsin become a corrupt state. So, its not just a partisan issue. This is a court case that they are trying to shut down saying its a partisan witch hunt with no merit. These revelations show theres a lot that everyone should be concerned about. The journal sental is part of the witch hunt now. Mike, you are the chair of the state party. Where is your opening here for your gubernatorial candidate . Well, i think the opening is more of a continuation of the same story, that instead of focusing on what scott walker said he would, creating 250,000 new jobs, he went after workers rights, you know, obviously had a horrible, you know, division here in wisconsin. I think we are seeing all the stuff ruth talked about, the paytoplay activity. Scott walker is not the right person to lead wisconsin. With all this going on, the polling is still very even. Why is that . Well, listen, you know, i think that wisconsin is a very divided state. Mary, who has been outspent four or 51 is pulling one point ahead of walker. The tide is turning. Scott walker is not on their side. Hes not creating the jobs he promised and peoples lives are not getting better. Theres a potential corruption issue. This guy doesnt think the rules that apply to everyone else apply to him. 71 days to election. The best thing we can do to get rid of this stuff is vote for mary in 71 days. Ruth, are there not very many independent voters in wisconsin . I think there are a lot of independent voters. A lot of folks voted for walker in the recall because they didnt like the idea of recalling a governor. I think walker is one bad news story away from losing. Wisconsin is a toss up. We have moved into the toss up category according to national pollsters. It is a toss up with an under funded democratic candidate with no name recognition. People are moving away from walker because we learned one thing after another about how hes a tool of a right wing set. Hes getting an email. Go ask for 1 million, the money comes to club for growth. He gives marching orders. Go talk to one big National Person after another. He does that. That has nothing to do with the people of wisconsin.
