Block increasing the minimum wage . Its bad economics. Good to have you with us tonight, folks. Thanks for watching. Paul ryan says its bad economics to raise the the minimum wage. Okay. Well match that up with you cant raise taxes on the job creators. Really . This is what we heard about the bush tax cuts. Since the bush tax cuts have been gone we have added jobs every single month. 53 months of private sector job growth and now were getting the ageold argument from the republicans oh, you cant raise the minimum wage. It will destroy the economy. Today marks five years since america last got a raise. Does that sound good . No. Its terrible. On july, 24, 2009, the federal minimum wage went from 6. 55 an hour to 7. 25 an hour. They didnt vote if 2009. That was the last incremental increase on a vote that was previously taken. You know what that comes out to . An extra 12 per week. Now after five years the cost of living has gone up, no question about it. Republicans, they dont care. Righties have made clear they will block any minimum wage increase on the table. Now lets just look at the numbers. Since july of 2009, since this 12 a week raise took place the price of gasoline has gone up 44 , electricity has gone up 9 . Ground beef, its that Kitchen Table, up 39 . Milk is up 21 and bacons up 67 . You know, bring home the bacon . Its a little more expensive today, isnt it . We all know that the minimum wage hasnt gone up one red cent since july of 2009. Things are so bad at this time even 69 of republicans say that they couldnt live off the minimum wage. Is it sustainable . Absolutely not. American families have fallen behind in a big way. Republicans have one bogus argument against raising the minimum wage. They say raising the minimum wage, its a job killer. Its also a flatout lie. Republicans are just protecting big corporate interests to keep their profits high. We have to go back to senator ted kennedy. He once said its all about greed and those conditions havent changed. For ten years Republican Leadership have refused to let us get a vote on increasing the minimum wage. What is the price that you want from these working men and women . What cost . How much more do we have to give for the private sector and the business . How many billion dollars more are you asking, are you requiring . When does the greed stop . That was the senate floor, senator ted kennedy back in 2007. Isnt it amazing, roll it fast forward to 2014, that conditions havent changed a bit for the people opposing this. Not raising the wage is all about corporate greed. Recent job reports show minimum wage increases actually helps job growth. President obama highlighted this fact earlier today. Today marks exactly five years since the last time the minimum wage went up in this country. Thats too long between races for a lot of americans. Now ive done what i can by requiring federal contractors to pay their employees a fair wage of 10. 10 an hour and since the first time i asked congress to raise the minh had mum wage, 13 states in d. C. Have gone ahead and raised theirs, and heres something interesting. States that have increased the minimum wage this year have seen higher job growth than those who didnt raise the minimum wage. America deserves a raise and it will be good for those workers and good for business. Most of the downry agre coun with the proz that. States that raised the minimum wage saw almost a 1 increase in job growth. States that did not raise the minimum wage saw half that increase. These numbers are common sense and everyone knows when there is more money to be spent, business will do a heck of a lot better. Just take a look at walmart. In may walmart reported its smallest quarterly growth in five years. Earlier today the company said ceo bill simon is stepping down. Walmart said simon is leaving on good terms. Really . Meanwhile, some speculate this interview on cnbc did him in. Hopefully after six years were starting to gain a little traction in the u. S. And that traction is coming at the top end. I think the middle and down is still pretty challenged. Is that the problem that sales that your consumers dont have as much disposable income to spend. I think retail in general hasnt been very robust in the last six years, in the last 12 months particularly. Simon all, but admitted walmart is struggling because the top 1 is thriving. Millionaires dont stop at walmart, underpaid people do. 20 of walmarts customers are on food stamps. Some countries are taking a different avenue. Theyre not going to allow this to happen. For instance germany raised their minimum wage to 11. 60 an hour. Its almost the highest in the world. Why do germans do that and we dont . Politics. America is currently at a crossroads when it comes to income and equality. The differences between democrats and republicans on this issue like minimum wage and the safety net, they are simply huge. There is a big difference. This was on full display in washington, d. C. , just today. Failed Vice President ial candidate congressman paul ryan laid out his plan to combat pofer pep youre going to love this. Ryans new plan takes power away from the federal government and gives it to private companies. The public and private sector Work Together we can offer a more personalized, customized form of aid, one that recognizes both a persons needs and their strengths. Both the problem and the potential. So i would start a Pilot Program called an opportunity grant. It would consolidate up to 11 federal programs into one stream of funding to participating states. The idea would be let states try different ways at provide aid and to test the result. In short, more exinib iexflexib exchange for accountability. That is a radical plan and ryan is far more radical today than he was in 2012. Ryans plan is bad fuse for a lot of different reasons. First, block grans are flatout dangerous. Turning food stamps into grants takes power away from the federal government and the insurance and the safety net. Certain states cant be trusted to distribute aid as needed. The federal government needs to have the oversight. Were not talking about some huge intrusion here. Were talking about helping people. Some states can even opt out like they did with Medicaid Expansion and thats really what ryan upons. He upons the total federal government out of everything. This would result, if we went down this road in large portions of the population without a safety net. Who voted for that . Nobody. Its important to remember paul ryan has been attacking poor americans for a long time. In 2012, catholic bishops called ryans budget immoral. Ryans 2015 budget is even worse. Nearly twothirds of his proposed cuts come from low income programs. Americans have a big choice to make this november. You can vote for the party of immoral budgets or vote for the party that wants to give every american an available, living wage with a safety net. They want to reject obamacare. They want to reject medicaid medicare. They want to reject Social Security and prior ties it. They want to go against voices in the workplace and they want to destroy the postal service. They wont quit, will they . Now ryan is out there selling the turd in the punch bowl trying to tell us oh, if we give all of this power to the states, americans are going to be just a lot better off. Really . Backed up . Local elections with Citizens United . Youre going turn these kinds of decisions over to the locals . Aint going to happen and it should not happen. Ryan is as radical now as he has ever been, and they are so radical theyre not even going to bring minimum wage the to the floor for a vote. So when ted kennedy was talking in 2007 and we hear them speak today the democrats in 2014 nothing has changed one bit, and the president is out there citing statistics that are absolutely correct. The states that have raised the minimum wage are the states that are doing better. Get your cell phones out. I want to know what you think. The way ive got this figured out, i havent been on minimum wage since i was 18 years old driving a pharmacy car in norfolk, virginia, but youre going live on 41day. What do you expect to learn from this . Well, we have my wife is doing it with me. So we have 154 to live for a week including food, transportation and entertainment, factoring in housing and other things and so, you know, and i want to make this point clear. I am not and were not going come anywhere near close with the challenges that minimum wage challenges that families have to live with. This is an opportunity for us to highlight some of the challenges and for us to kind of embody them and share them with our constituents how tough it is to make ends meet. I think you hit the nail on the head when you were talking about coffee going up 30 , cheese and milk going up 20 , and eggs going up 20 . These are staples of the american diet and if youre living on minimum wage youve seen no increase and so you have to account for that and my big worry here is we have a huge diabetes epidemic in the country thats driving up Health Care Costs and if working poor families dont have enough money to buy good food, were just contributing to that longterm cost of the country. This is a longterm issue and the challenges these folks face are tremendous. So gasoline has gone up 44 since 2009 and yet were still dishing out Oil Subsidies to Oil Companies that are delivering record profits. Wall street right. Through the roof and we have nothing for the workers on the lower end of the wage scale. The climate hasnt changed since ted kennedy gave his infamous speech to the senate floor. You cant get a vote on this, can you . Were not going to get a vote in the house on this for the rest of this year. No doubt about that. This is not going to come up to a vote and one of the reasons i wanted to do this challenge is because the network of people and the dozens of groups that are involved in this, faithbased groups and others is to bring awareness not just to the general public and to those minimum wage workers to let them know, youve got to vote and youve got to be involved and you have to have your family registered and you have to take a little bit of time to campaign. We didnt get the 40hour workweek and time and a half because we were sitting on our hands and we had average People Living in poverty and organized and involved in the political process and the most important thing about this is the minimum wage workers, 64,000 just in my Congressional District alone, 22 of the workforce have to be involved and be engaged and be registered to vote and get out there and start campaigning and get your network of people involved in the process as well and thats how were going to change this. Its not going to be pie in the sky and someone will wave their magic wand because we want to be nice to people. Democracy is a contact sport and we have to have the the workers be recognized and they need to get into the game themselves and help us push the ball over the goal line. Why cant the people decide . How bad is this . Its pretty bad and the minimum wage should only be a starting point. We havent seen wages rise in general in the u. S. In 40 years when you take out inflation. As you said so well, why is it that germany can have an 11. 60 minimum wage, australia, 15 minimum wage and these are booming economies and germany ties it to increasing collective bargaining to 80 of the country and they passed it almost unanimously. All three major parties vote for that minimum wage just three weeks ago and i happened to be there with them. Were way out of contact with where the world is going and thanks to the people you mentioned. The republicans say this is going to be a job killer. Why dont the germans think this is going to be a job killer . Because Angela Merkel who is a centrist believes if you dont have consumer demand youre missing a key ingredient of growing the economy. We seem to forget that here. Without the consumer that we talk about thats 80 of our economy having more to spend because theyre producing more, productivity has shot up in this country in that same period as the wage freeze. Theres no way except for mortgages and other schemes that you can stimulate the economy here. So were hurting ourselves because of ideology of what has become the Republican Party. So what do you think it will take to get republicans to the table to realize that, yeah, we have to do better than 7 25 an hour . Whats it going to take . Tim ryan nailed it. It will take a movement thats not just minimum wage, people, which is why we need to talk about things like collective bargaining and fair trade so that we get not 20 of his district, but 80 and not all wage earners so we can win it and we need to have that kind of Democracy Movement saying why is america leaving working people behind . We want to be part of the Global Economy . That means a decent minimum wage and it means rates at work and it means fair trade and it doesnt mean the 18th century capitalism that these republicans are embracing. And i want your reaction to paul ryans budget. His plan to make the social safety net into block grants to go to states thinking they can make the better decisions. Yeah upon. Thats the same kind of problem. Instead of having a floor he wants an economic lottery because he believes like ann rand, know just rand paul that somehow that your state of wellbeing is about your own commit am in the world and that works fine for some people, but if we dont have like the rest of the world, an economic safety net that youve described, if we dont have that were going to turn ourselves back into the the 18th to 19th centuries here instead of joining the rest of the world in the 21st century. Supporting the definition of marriage as one man and one woman is not antigay. It is protraditional marriage because tolerance is also a twoway street. Joining me tonight is e. J. Dion, columnist to the Washington Post and msnbc contributor. I think marco rubio is confused on this. I havent heard anybody come out and say theyre against one man and one woman and i dont hes talking about intolerance. Conservatives are the party of family values. They love to say that, so why cant they embrace families headed up by samesex partners . Where are they going with this, e. J. . I agree with that, ed. Marco rubio would like Nothing Better than for us to attack him so im not going to oblige here. Part of what hes up to politically is trying to shore up the religious conservative part of the Republican Party. A lot of republicans got mad at him for negotiating Immigration Reform last year and hes sort of tried to back away from that, but not entirely, so i think he knows what hes doing here, but i think in ten years time hell be for gay marriage, and i hope you and i can talk about it then because i think that the strongest case for gay marriage, perhaps paradoxically is the conservative argument for gay marriage. If you are for fidelity and commitment in relationships, it simply doesnt make sense to say to a chunk of our fellow human beings, gays and lesbians and were for fidelity and commitment and you guys cant make this public commitment and i think thats why quite a few conservatives, actually are slowly coming around to this and certainly young people are in droves. Rubio says hes tired of being treated like a hater because he talks about one man and one woman in traditional marriage. I find that hard to believe. I dont sense that out there, and hes almost playing the role of a victim in considering how young voters are more accepting of samesex marriage and this revolution that is of acceptance thats taking place in society, do republicans not realize that theyre fighting a losing battle or just refusing to accept it . I think the sense that theyre fighting a losing battle is reflected in this new turn on the right, and i think, by the way, its very important that progressives not give them any fodder to make this work. What they want to say is, you know, the bigotry that used to be directed against gays and lesbians is now being directed against people who are still opposed to samesex marriage if you say that youre going to be attacked, and i think the attitude of people who are for samesex marriage and im one of them is no. Lets just encourage them along. Lets just say take a look at what some of your fellow conservatives think. The Public Religion Research institute did a poll and found that 43 of white evangelicals under the age of 35 are in favor of samesex marriage. That will soon be a majority. Were not talking about a percentage of liberals. Were not talking about a percentage of people who live in the northeast. Were talking about white evangelical christians and so i think that they understand that this is about family and its about all of us who have people who are gay and lesbian in our families and upon them to have an opportunity to make a lifelong commitment. Rubio was critical of the courts for overturning samesex marriage bans across the the country, but his party doesnt seem to have too much problem when the courts make a decision that works pretty well for them. Most recently what one court said about the subsidies for obamacare. So, clearly, were seeing a double standard here. I mean, everything is to fit their ideology and their beliefs, is it not . Oh, absolutely. I mean, i now basically have to chuckle when a conservative attacks judicial activism. If you looked at that Court Decision yesterday it was the most tortured reading of the health care law. It was as if they said you made a drafting error, therefore were going to take Health Insurance away from 5 million people. Fortunately, i think that decision will not stand. I have a strong feeling that the whole circuit is going to take this up and say, no, this doesnt make sense. The Supreme Court including scalia and thomas in an opinion essentially accepted that the subsidies apply to people whether theyre on the state exchanges or the federal exchanges. So i think this bit of judicial activism will be undone. And not criticized at all by marco rubio, at all. E. J. Dionne. Thank you. You bet. Jeb bush came under heavy criticism that people who come here illegally do so as an act of love. The Florida Governor is now changing his tune with the crisis on the border. In a recent wall street journal oped, jeb bush wrote, we should close loop hols for individuals to be released except deserves few who may demonstrate true cause for asylum or protection from sex trafficking. These children must be returned to their homes if central america. Jeb went on to say we must aggressively remove the incentives that encourage people to break immigration laws. It is vital this we clearly communicate that there will be zero rewards for those who imperil the lives of children by sending them to the United States illegally. Jeb bush also said House Republicans need to take action to fix the current immigration crisis. Of course, he wasted no time slamming president obama for wasting executive action on this issue. Jeb wrote, we have too often seen what happens when the president oversteps his constitutional authority, avoiding similar disasters. Results that would require legislative action by both parties. From act of love to close the loopholes is quite a reversal. Jeb bush is making a 180 to appeal to the fringe radical base that is needed for being mom nated by the Republican Party. Is this a florida thing to do a 180 when the political heat gets turned up or what . Joy, what do you make of this move right now. You might call it pulling a rubio because he pilted this idea. Jeb bush is run for example president and he wants to, anyway, and one thing is he wants to correct the compassion stuff and get in line with the base of the Republican Party. He hit Barack Obamas overstepping the constitution card, check. He got rid of the compassion, check. So the the only kids being sex trafficked should be able to stay, checked. But everybody remembers he the was the guy that was for comprehensive reform and its probably know going work. Hes all of a sudden a hard liner, caesar, how will this play out in florida some. So much for the conservative and hes now the and hes looking at rubio and the rest of the republican field. I agree with joy. Hes absolutely running. Where this became now a humanitarian crisis and not a humanitarian crisis which was caused by the inaction of republicans in congress and his peers, so to speak and hes talk that even victims of human sexa you will trafficking should go back. So hes dealing with the very hard right, as you said, but hes dl now for him the new political reality which the rest of the country and certainly the National Republican party knew all along. To him, its the new reality. Mike how do you read it . It seems to me that jeb bush is basically saying what president obamas been saying to congress. Weve got to do something about Immigration Reform. This is something weve got to do, but of course, the political winds wont let him do it. Where does bush fit in this with the president . He needs florida. Thats the irony here. Hes not exactly a welcome, household name anywhere else in the country. He has that bush curse over his head. He plays well in florida, but what hes forgotten that in florida we have a 23 hispanic population according to the last consensus and day one, were hearing need for love and compassion and all of that talk about child immigrants and how we have to take care of them and day two, someone slaps him and reminds him that hes running with the ted cruz crazy party and he has to act ted cruz crazy. The problem right now, more than ever he is the last statesman and the last possibility of statesman that the Republican Party has. He needs florida and hell alienate florida by the new talk and he has to have florida for 2016. I dont know who is advising him right now. Bad advice. Bad advice. Joe, is he trying to chip away at the ted cruz base . You know what . I think hes just trying to make himself palatable. The game for jeb bush is to replace Chris Christie as the safe bet for rand paul. The problem for jeb bush is hes the the guy that opposed the sb1070 law in arizona and no one will forget that and he thinks he has a safety gap in florida and the population thats latino is cubanamericans, and cuban americans strongly affect the Immigration Reform and nor does it affect the puerto ricans. His new position looks fraudulent to the rest of the party in the country. Hes still in a nowin. It really does. Mitch, back in april, this problem with the border was transpiring. It was unfolding. It was taking place, but it wasnt until the radicals started stopping busses and making an issue of this and some in congress who were squawking about the president and not doing anything that jeb bush did a reversal on this. Their fight to stop the proposed pipeline has become part of the National Story about energy in this country and Climate Change. I want to point out that there are other fights taking place around the country. This is how it gets started and works. Encana is trying to get approval for 13 new hydraulic fracking wells. The neighbors who stand to lose the most and be most affected by this have come out in full force since june. Great story. A group of grassroots activists in the state of maine led a vocal campaign to warn the community about the possibility of tarsands coming down the portland pipeline from canada. The environmental hazard thes that might follow. Pennsylvania where residents filed complaints about drilling related water problems and a lack of a reliable system for tracking citizen complaints. A new report shows residents are right to demand change. Oil and gas extraction, damaged water sources in the state. More than 200 times since 2010. Not a good trend. They are working hard to raise awareness of Environmental Issues in their own backyards and hometowns. Its these Small Victories which will make a big impact on the Environmental Movement in this country if we are going to address Climate Change on the political level. All politics is local. It seems there is a level of awareness now thats changed in america. Are these small grassroots movements the best way to make an impact on Climate Change . Absolutely. We are seeing victories like this across the country on fracking, on the tar sands. There is also 170 american towns and communities that decided to move beyond dirty coal and replace it with clean energy. We are seeing clean energy installed at greater rates than we have seen. Putting hundreds of thousands of people to work. There is real momentum we are seeing. It does knit together into a cohesive movement. There is reason for optimism. I believe Climate Change could be d death knell for the Republican Party. There are so many deniers in congress. How do they go home and explain this to people in their surroundings are seeing change. What about it . They dont explain. Thats the point. They distract. Right . They dont explain people in red states and republican districts are feeling the effects of Climate Change in the form of fires, floods, droughts and severe weather. They dont explain that clean energy is installed in red districts more than democratic districts in the wind belt in the middle part of the country and the sun belt in the southern part of the country. The other thing they dont explain is that when we organize, Work Together collectively we can achieve great things. We can build a society thats powered by clean energy and put millions of people to work. We have to work for it. We have to vote, organize and show up. The final thing i will say is that this will reach a crescendo on september 21 in new york city. Well have the largest gathering on Climate Change in u. S. History.
