The bait. Im the guy that likes to do the fishing. Im the guy that likes to do the stories that nobody else is doing. But this one time tonight, im going to start with a story that i just dont think a lot of liberals in this country are terribly concerned with. But lets not be disfocused for a moment. I want to start tonight with a couple of numbers. The first number is nine. House republicans will form the ninth Congressional Committee to investigate the september 12th attacks in benghazi. Here go your tax dollars, folks. Today House Speaker john boehner selected South Carolina conservative republican trey gowdy to head up this new committee. The next number i want to focus on is 1,101. Fox news has mentioned the word benghazi no fewer than over a thousand times in the past year. Now, one more important number. And that would be six. Tomorrow marks six months away from the midterm elections. Thats what this is all about. Republicans have one strategy and one strategy alone to distract the American People from the real issues for the next six months. Theyve got to drive it home. This is their chance. Theyve got a memo now thats not quite what they want. So this is the big story. Now, to keep mentioning benghazi, the right wing has basically manufactured hysteria over the release of new white house memos and this special Committee Gave benghazi the spotlight on the sunday news talk shows. We didnt have actionable intelligence about 9 11, that doesnt mean it didnt happen. If democrats are shielding the administration and trying to protect them and if the administration tried to protect themselves, because they couldnt stand the truth about benghazi, then theyll get burned. Thats an interesting comment by the senator from South Carolina. That there might be some members in the house who were shielding the president of the United States. Yet on the other hand we keep hearing about how president obama doesnt have very good relations with a lot of house members. Who are all these shields that are out there . Republicans believe this story will fire up their base. The world will turn for them. Theyll do their very best to whip up controversy to convince people to care about it. Got to care about benghazi. Fox news will continue to give this manufactured story countless hours of coverage you can count on it. On fox news sunday, lashed out at former congresswoman jane harman who mocked the conservative obsession with benghazi. The question was whether in the aftermath of the attack when sending the ambassador out to explain it to everybody and she did so falsely that there wasnt a conspiracy to create the false talking points that she used. I mean, its coming from the part of the world that has a tremendous amount of unrest. Those talking points better be perfect, dude. To conservatives equate exchanging the word attack into a demonstration with lying to get us into a war. Now, when colin powell made his iraq presentation to the United Nations in 2003, he was accused of fabricating evidence and ignoring repeated warnings and prewar iraq intelligence. Meanwhile, dick cheney was out and about. Oh, yeah. He was spreading fear about terrorism to drum up support for United States involvement in iraq. How do you deter a terrorist when theres nothing they value that theyre prepared to defend . When theyre prepared to sacrifice their own lives in an effort to kill americans. Where might these terrorists acquire weapons of mass destruction . Saddam hussein becomes a prime suspect. We know hes out once again trying to produce nuclear weapons. And we know he has a long standing relationship with groups like the al qaeda organization. Now, they knew a lot of stuff back then before we got involved. I wonder what those talking points looked like. I wonder if they used the word war or battle or commitment. Were talking about certain vernacular to communicate a dire situation to the American People. If republicans if they get control of both houses after the midterm, theyll try to stretch the benghazi issue as far as itll go. All the way out to another two or three years. If its basically their only chance to bring down Hillary Clinton, thats what this is about, to scar the president. The right wing has failed doing what . Well, they have failed to derail the conversation about the economy. They tried to. It didnt work. They failed to derail this thing called obamacare. Voted 50 times to get rid of it. All these numbers are coming in that are good. And republicans basically are failing on all fronts. The only thing republicans have got left right now is benghazi. Its benghazi. The conservative mission is to get the American People, that would be you, to believe democrats are covering up for president obama. In fact, theyre probably holding back door meetings. What are we going to do now . Weve got to protect obama. No. It isnt happening. Although Fox News ContributorGeorge Wilson said democrats will try to make the benghazi investigation look like an obvious partisan exercise. I do not know why any democrat would want to participate in this. By boycotting it it just becomes a redundant and obviously partisan republican exercise. And its only a matter of time before democrats raise the following question. Would there be a select committee if it didnt want to have the power to subpoena the former secretary of state Hillary Clinton for obviously reasons pertaining to president ial politics. And george will, i dont know why you, a selfproclaimed accredited journalist would follow the mob of conservatives who think that this is a huge issue for america. The conservative perspective is president obama avoided it because he wanted to get reelected in 2012. Theyre dead wrong on that too. The reasons president obama got reelected is because the democrats focused on what the American People wanted. You know, caring about jobs, voting rights, womens rights, equal rights, social justice. And lets not forget the Affordable Care act. And lets not forget about saving the american automobile industry. All those kinds of things drove a few folks to the polls. The majority of americans are with the democrats to this day on the major issues. We have 90 of americans in this country who want some kind of background checks on firearms. We have the majority of americans in this country who want to do minimum wage like almost 7 out of 10 americans. We have the majority of americans in this country who think that obamacare is working. This is about focus. And disfocus. The president of the United States and the democrats want you to focus on what is really important to this country for the next generation. Meantime, the republicans wrong on all the issues, polling across the board, want you to focus on something that is sad, its tragic, but theres no lie. Theres no coverup. Theres no conspiracy. And yet theres going to be more benghazi hearings. Are you yawning yet . This is why ed shultz is not covering the story, because theres nothing there. The only thing thats there right now is for them to gin up you the same way they ginned up the American People back in 2003 because we were 45 minutes to a mushroom cloud. Did you know that . He had wmd, he had it all, we had to go. Got to fight them over here instead of fight em here. Lets just work with the truth for once. Dont you find it interesting that everybody on fox news thinks that benghazi is a big story . And dont you find it interesting that not one democrat has stepped out and said, there might be something new here. We better look at this. No. This is what happens when you have the power in the house. You can call as for as many subpoenas as you want. You can call for as many hearings as you want. You can waste tax dollars to the nth degree. Thats whats happening here. Get your cell phones out. I want to know what you think. John mindy of california who sits on the Armed Services committee. Good to have you with us tonight. How are you doing . Im doing very well, ed. This thing is going on and on to boredom actually. The Armed Services committee actually did a hearing. And the result was theres nothing here. Obviously a great tragedy, but ed, during the george w. Bush period, there were 13 attacks on various embassies and consulates around the world. 60 people dies. In karachi there was a death of one of our diplomats. Those were not investigated during that period of time because it was a tragedy. Keep in mind that the 2012 budget, the president proposed 1. 8 billion for security. The House Republicans came back with 1. 4 billion. And ultimately wound up with a 200 million less money than president obama wanted to secure it. Why . Because the republicans refused to provide the money for security. Did that have something to do with benghazi . Maybe. Congressman, not one democrat has stepped out and said there might be something here. Whoo wha do you make of that . We have much more important things to do. This has been investigated as you said eight times before. This will be the ninth time. This is old, old news. And in fact, its a tragedy. It was a serious tragedy. Could it have been prevented . Perhaps. But it did happen. Now, what do we need to do Going Forward . Do we need to investigate it again . No. What we need to do is what you said a moment ago. That is to focus on jobs in this nation. We need to focus on the republican budget that just passed the house of representatives which blows a major, major hole in the Construction Industry in this nation. By basically not funding transportation and a host of other things. Congressman, what about this renewed fascination with benghazi . Do you can you honestly say that there is absolutely nothing in these emails that would warrant any type of extra effort or investigation because the white house may have lied and misled the American People . Well, i dont think we certainly didnt see the white house lying at all. They were trying to get the story out just moments after it happened. They didnt have all the information. Weve known that. Thats in the testimony. Thats well known by everybody. But i think one of the interesting things thats going to happen is going to be a fight in the republican caucus. Darrell issa has been on this issue for years and now theyve appointed another fellow to take up a special committee. Were going to have to watch to see how these committees work together. My guess is theres going to be a brawl between the two committees. Okay. Congressman garamendi from the house. Good to have you with us tonight. Thank you. You bet. Let me turn to former chief of staff of colin powell. Good to have you with us tonight. Do you think Americans Care about benghazi . Do you think obviously we care about any american that loses his or her life overseas, but what are we with this . Do you really think there is a smoking gun there as Lindsey Graham has stated . Well, of course Americans Care at least the great majority of them do. I care. I think the accountability review board headed by ambassador career ambassador tom picker pick pickering. Both men for whom i have respect. A great deal of respect as a matter of fact. And dick shenek who is the real horse of the arb. Found substantial problems in the rotation of Diplomatic Security agents, and assistant secretariat leadership in one or two cases. And in most substantially the host nation, the libyans who are really we forget this. They are the Real Security for our consulates and embassies. The host nation people. They fail miserably. So i think this has been looked at. Its been looked at in spades. The one aspect of it that may not have been looked at that tom talked about at his press conference was the classified aspect. And they have to look into that for reasons you and i know. That classified aspect may show the cia had more culpability. Thats usually the case when the cia is involved as they were so substantially. But this issue has been looked at, has been looked at thoroughly and recommendations have been made. Let me add when i was with secretary powell, we knew one of the Biggest Challenges we had starting with the commission and moving up to this arb now reconfirming it is that Congress Cuts the money allocated for Security Enhancement to state department every time we go and do the budget. So had there have been the proper allocation of money, the security would have been different, correct . I think its correct to say that had money been afforded in accordance with these blue ribbon panels that weve had over and over again every time we have an incident, if money had been let out in accordance with the way the recommendations went, we would have a lot better security situations at every consulate and embassy that the United States runs in the world today. And that is a statement of fact. Colonel, is there normally a fight or bickering at the bureaucratic level about how in a crisis the country is going to talk to the American People . I mean, it just seems to me that the conservatives are looking for perfect wording here. And if they dont get what they want, theyre going to go ahead, sir. Youre right. Of course. Its very difficult to handle a crisis. And you take the talking points from whomever you can get them who is on the scene. In this case as i understand it, the cia provided most of the talking points that for example susan rice as u. S. Ambassador used. Those talki ining points turned to be wrong as they often do in the first blush of action. You cant ever get it right right up front. I dont find that to be a great problem. And i do find it to be an enormous problem in my political party. Im still a republican. I find it an enormous problem they go after Something Like this, benghazi, tragedy that it was and they dont go after something that is a colossal tragedy like the war crimes of Richard Bruce cheney. Okay. What do you think should be done if the democrats ever got total power in the house and senate . Should they go down that road . Or is that a day gone too far . About cheney. I think this has been looked at. I think the decision by president obama not to look back was lamentable. I can understand why in terms of political reasons he did it. But i think were going to regret the fact that we actually condoned torture in the world. We sent human rights and criminal justice back an aeon. We were supposed to be the leaders. Now were the laughing stock of the world. This has significant repercussions for the United States. The fact i was a member of that administration will haunt me to the grave. Discussing the minimum wage when there are no jobs available. 288,000 jobs were added in april. Our business is about creating 9. 2 million new jobs over 50 consecutive months. Sorry. Oops. The focus should be what are the policies that send the message to the job creators . How far removed they are from the reality of life for millions of americans. I just hope that rick perry stays focused and wants to be president of the United States because hell help us keep the conversation alive. Is rick perrys maximum wage talking point going to get him anywhere . Its the old Republican Point of view that if we give more tax breaks to millionaires and to large corporations, that just magically were going to create millions of goodpaying jobs. Well, i think anyone who lived through the Bush Administration knows that is not the case. We need to raise the minimum wage. 10. 10 is a start. I would go higher than that. We need to change our disastrous trade policies which are costing us millions of decentpaying manufacturing jobs. We need to enable workers to be able to form unions so they can bargain collectively. But not passing the minimum wage is very much a step in the wrong direction. Well, perrys argument against the minimum wage is based on whats best for business. Yet there is really no calculus out there that would support that. Does he care about the Human Element of the minimum wage . I think this is something that the republicans can get pinned on. There are so many people that are struggling out there and being left behind in the economy. Where does that leave the political message in all of this minimum wage talk, senator . Well, i think the American People are very, very clear. They understand, ed, that 7. 25 an hour is a starvation wage. They also understand that most of the gdp is dependent on consumer spending. And if working people dont have any money to spend because theyre earning starvation wages, were not going to create the types of jobs we have to create. They also understand it has not kept pace with inflation. That since 1968 if we had had a minimum wage keeping pace, that would be 10. 50 an hour. So i think perry is living in his own world. His job is to represent the big money interest and he is turning his back on working families. And senator, what do you say to those out there who believe that its not Congress Place to set a minimum wage . Those are exactly the same people who believe that it is not congress job to provide health care to our people, it is not congress job to ensure that when workers are on the job they have safe working conditions. These are in some cases the people who do not believe its Congress Responsibility to maintain social security. What were talking about, ed, are folk who is are really extreme right wingers who believe we should abolish the concept of the minimum wage, allow people to work in this country for three or four bucks an hour and basically make sure that government is not doing anything to protect the elderly, working families, the children, or the poor. Yeah. And finally senator, to switch subjects for just a moment on health care, on obamacare. We are now seeing that gallup reporting that the lowest number of uninsured in this country is now where we are. And theyve been keeping track since 2008. Is this vindication of sorts that obamacare is working . That were headed in the right direction. If its all about getting more people insured, i think this would be the critical number. Absolutely. Look, the number of uninsured remained at way, way too high. Tens of millions of people still dont have Health Insurance. But we are making progress. Through the exchange, through the expansion of medicaid. I think that is pretty good news. I think, however, our republican friends do not quite agree. Dont start your sentence that way. Welcome back to the ed show. President obama got some laughs at the expense of racist Rancher Cliven Bundy at saturday nights white house Correspondents Dinner. The racist rhetoric weve been subjected to as a nation i think is absolutely no joke. First it was bundy. Then it was this dude donald sterli sterling. Former nba star Kareem Abduljabbar said this week he believes these incidents point to a larger issue. I did a bit of research. More whites believe in ghosts than believe in re schism. Thats why we dont have thats why we have shows like ghost busters and dont have shows like racist busters. Just look at what happened to montre Montreal Canadiens subban. Subban won the winner goal against the bruins. Unhappy boston fans took to twitter to send racist tweets. According to analysis, subbans name and the nword were used simultaneously on 17,000 tweets on thursday. In fact, the nword was a trending topic on twitter in boston after the game. Not all of these tweets were negative. Many boston fans chimed in to express their disappointment with the racist tweets, but the fact those fan hs to speak out against such overt racism in the first place clearly is disappointing enough. Joining me now for our Rapid Response panel is political analyst dr. Michael eric dyson and zurlina maxwell. Good to have you both with us tonight. Dr. Dyson, you first. The bruins have condemned their fans racist tweets. It was a pr explosion they certainly didnt want or need. Is the nhl and hockey somehow lagging behind the rest of the sports world when it comes to being inclusive . Let me first of all say it was great that the Boston Bruins organization showed such class and immediately disputed those tweets and suggested they were just ill headed, wrong, and very racist. Yeah. Theyre definitely lagging behind. The nhl has not been engaged in the kind of aggressive recruitment of people of color into their ranks. And black people have not black men in particular have not necessarily been attracted to hockey in the overwhelming number theyve been attracted to basketball and baseball and football and the like nap being said, i think that whats interesting here along with golf although the extraordinary success of tiger woods proved otherwise, the preserve of white men. And thats something about the brutality of the sport that suggests that theres an exemption for the violence that goes on in hockey versus the kind of violence that goes on in other sports. So even there theyre given the kind of pass in the culture for violent outbreaks that is stigmatized in other places. So not only have they not attracted black men to their ranks, theyve always had a kind of double standard operating there. And i suspect that has to do with the very white nature of the sport itself. Zurlina, whats your reaction to Kareem Abduljabbars comments that more whites believe in ghosts than they do in re schiacism . Well, i think hes on the mashlg. When we compare our experiences with racism, were then required to show proof. Show me the evidence. Even white liberals sometimes will say show me the evidence of the racism. Then well see look at trayvon martin, look at renisha mcbride, look at these desperate outcomes where people are color are given a certain set of circumstances and yet that is not enough proof. I think hes on the mark when he says there are some white people who have difficulty realizing that yes, its 2014, but we still have a very big problem with race and discrimination in this country. Yeah. These opinions are nothing new. Now people just have an outlet like twitter to express them which i think dr. Dyson, inflames the situation. People get emotional on twit per. How many times has someone tweeted out and said id like to have that back. Exactly. I think it shows us, you know i mean, how can we use incidents like this particular one in the nhl to move forward on an issue of race . Well, thats exactly right. Digital media is great. Its provided a tremendous outlet for ordinary people. Its democratized the space of american culture. But at the same time, lets be real. Just because you can talk doesnt mean you should. And maybe we should have a reflex button to push to calm down a bit before we engage in it. What it has done is exacerbated these tensions because it exposed them for what they are. When miss maxwell was talking about proof, Digital Media provides us proof that there is lingering and powerful pockets of resentment in american culture. So what we have to do is Pay Attention to the fact that we cant stigmatize one group. Weve got to look at the way in which this has been pervasive in the entire society. Zerlina, president obama makes a joke about Cliven Bundys racism. But if he tries to have serious conversations about race or any of us who are white, were race baiting. Were being accused by conservatives. I dont think its left, right, blue, green, center. Weve got to be able to live together all backgrounds, all religions, everything. Why is america having a hard time doing that . Well, because, you know, race baiting is its supposed to shut down the conversation. So if you get labelled a race baiter, then theres something wrong with you. And any valid concerns about Racial Injustice are now invalid because youre taking advantage of the real perceived injustices that people experience in their daily lives. So oftentimes, you know, a racist remark will be black people arent told thats real racism. That doesnt count. All of these instances count. I think like dr. Dyson said, twitter exposes because really twitter is the mechanism for cowards to express racism. They know no one is going to show up to their house and there are no consequences for that behavior. But at the same time i think that twitter allows in exposing the racism allowstous have these conversations. And we will not end racism until we have these very difficult conversations. And ignoring racism and pretending it doesnt exist does nothing to improve the lives and daily lived experiences of people of color. Dr. Dyson, you have the final word on this. Your thoughts. I think shes right. Miss maxwell has put her finger on the pulse here. We have to have an open honest conversation here. The reason the president can joke about it. Im getting the truth across but doing it through humor because many white people are incapable of hearing the truth told by africanAmerican People. And whats interesting, the jokes dont put them as the subject of the scorn or the object. They feel safe to engage in a humorous relief of tension because they dont feel indicted by it. But the real situation in america is that president barack obama has been incapable or at least not free enough to be able to tell the truth about race. And hes one of the smartest guys who talks about race in america. Thats one of the greatest tragedies. I look forward to the Correspondents Dinner because some of the stinging barbed truths he might tell come out during the joke time. Theres a growing militia presence taking hold in clark county and the folks dont like it. Up to 1,000 armed separatists have now taken up camp in the name of cliven bundy. These militia men are patrolling nearby communities, brandishing high caliber weapons and are making people really nervous. They are even setting up roadside checkpoints and requiring residents to show identification before they pass. Do they have that torte . Townspeople want this to end. They fear for their lives. I spoke to a Council Member whos calling on the governor and other officials to take action. Whats so unfortunate is that the community is not does not feel safe. People who are his neighbors feel like he is putting a black eye on their community and a negative image on the community. Local businesses have lost some hundred thousand dollars in money over the last few weeks. And one of our local hotels actually had nine bomb threats against them when the blm personnel were staying at that hotel during the cattle roundup. The first thing i want to know about is what gives these militiamen or separatists the right to stop somebody and check their i. D. And that whats the story about all the checkpoints. I dont think theres so much of the stopping people anymore now that the blm is gone, but i got an eyewitness report when they were there from a guy just over the weekend who sent me a detailed email. They clearly were stopping people when they were just trying to go shopping, trying to get gas, asking them for i. D. s. Sips the blm has left, whats happened is there are these checkpoints as that you described out by bundys ranch. Theyre generally not stopping people, but i talked to a couple of folks today from mesquite. These folks are coming into town, wearing their sidearms, which is perfectly legal, but just imagine, this is a very sleepy town, 80 miles north of vegas. As one of them put to me, golf courses and guns dont go well together. Well, clark county, these folks are nervous according to the congressman who were going to have on this program tomorrow night. He went home and heard an earful from the residents, they want to this end. This is a growing presence and these militia folks, separatists, theyre not going anywhere. What are you hearing . Im hearing exactly the same thing. I think the congressman is right, the majority of folks up there in that area want the militia folks to leave. Heres the problem, though. Horsford has asked the govr ndur and others to call for them to leave. Hes asked for the sheriff to investigate, but unless they actually catch them doing Something Like checking peoples i. D. s, like branldishing their weapons and telling people to stop, i dont think theres much they can do. Those folks are up there, theyre come into town you have to understand. Out by the road where they have these checkpoints, there are no services. Theyre walking into gas stations and stores heavily armed. But you cant arrest somebody for just unsettling people. So are they waiting for the government to show up again . Are they waiting for round two of all of this . Thats a great question. The government is going to show up kben. The question is then. They cant let this welfare cowboy whos getting away with something no other ranchers get away with this and declare victory. Theyre going to come back, ed, but the question is, how long do they wait . Do they hope the militia folks leave . It doesnt look like they have any intention of the leaving. If the government comes back, theres a real chance of violence up there, which manitoba wants. And quickly, does it seem like the governor is going to take any action at all on this .
