Mississippi primary, Chris Mcdaniel is formally challenging the results. Plus, its an election day in hawaii again. Well keep an eye on that. Good morning from washington. Its friday, august 15th, 2014. This is the daily rundown. Im luke russert in for the great chuck todd. New developments in ferguson, missouri, where were expecting any minute now for the police to release the name of the officer who shot and killed 18yearold Michael Brown on saturday. Youre looking live here at where that announcement will happen. And for the First Time Since the shooting, protests have come. Governor nixon handed control of security in ferguson over to the Missouri StateHighway Patrol. The scene on the streets yesterday was nothing like what we saw two nights ago. Crowds and protesters were out into Early Morning hours, but police say they didnt make one single arrest overnight. Police have been withholding the name of the officer who shot and killed brown, but now they say theyll release that name. This morning, Governor Nixon told the today show this is an important step in the investigation. Multiple investigations going on, not only Ferguson Police but the department of justice. Ive said all along i thought getting that name out was important, especially once they indicated they were going to. I think todays actions to get it out, like i said, its an important step. Its not the finish line of the its a hurdle to get over and im happy to hear that theyre going to get that out there. On the ground, state patrol captain ron johnson, who grew up in the community, marched with the protesters. Thats a marked change after five consecutive nights of police in riot gear deploying tear gas against demonstrators. Johnson says he understands the frustration and the underlying tension that touched off the protests this weekend. My family and friends live here. A lot of the people in this crowd are friends of mine. And so theres a lot of frustration. And people who join the protest say they felt a difference in the mood on the streets. I think it would be a whole lot different now that the state police have took over. Were seeing more progress, were getting a whole lot more information. There is a different feel. Theres not as much tension, but i feel a great positive force thats in the air. Theres a lot of hope. It was extremely excited, almost emotional to the point of tears because the unity between the people regardless of the race, Everybody Holding hands, lifting up their hands. Pictures like these of police clashing with protesters wednesday nightcap toured the attention of the president. He called on Governor Nixon to discuss security yesterday and spoke to attorney general eric holder about the investigation before addressing the nation. There is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting. Theres also no excuse for police to use Excessive Force against peaceful protests or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights. Meanwhile, nonviolent protests sprang up in other cities overnight, tying up traffic in times square. Nbcs ron allen joins us live now from ferguson on more of what to expect over the next few hours. Ron, obviously last night was a real change from what we saw a few nights ago. There is a sort of unity between police and protesters, at least an understanding and peace was there. But the big news this morning is we expect to hear for the first time the name of the officer who was involved in the murder of Michael Brown or the killing of Michael Brown. Yes, exactly, luke. Thats why this huge crowd of reporters is here behind me and crews waiting. We thought this might happen as soon as an hour ago. The police chief, tom jackson, told me that personally that he was going to release this name. Hes now saying that hes behind schedule. I would imagine that this has gotten pretty complicated for the authorities. They have said in the past they did not want to release the name because there were Death Threats against officers, Death Threats against officers who were not involved in this. There have been a number of names that have been suggested to be the name of the officer that have turned out to be not correct. The bottom line is it was a huge security problem the chief has been saying to release the name. Now apparently he or someone above him from the state police, the Governors Office has had a change of heart apparently. So well see what happens. I would imagine at this point there are security considerations being made, if theyre not in place already. This is a very small town. Once this officers name is known, im sure there will be protection for him and his family. We know that already a few days ago there were officers called in from other communities to protect the Police Officers here and their families. So well see what the reaction is once the name is released and where things go from here. Last night, youre right, just an incredibly different atmosphere here, a different situation. Now that the police, the local police have given up some of their authority and the state police have taken over. Luke. Nbcs ron allen on the ground for us in ferguson. You will keep us updated when that name does come out. We expect that shortly. Thanks so much, ron. Im joined now by missouri congressman emmanuel cleaver, who of course is from that state and has been following this issue very closely. Congressman cleaver, thank you so much for coming on the program. Good to be with you, luke. What is your feeling this morning, last night there was relative calm. Does credit go to Governor Nixon for appointing mr. Johnson in charge of the Police Presence on the ground and what more would you like to see from Governor Nixon going on in the state . Well, i think the governor did the right thing. He saw what people around the world saw, and that is that the police in ferguson were inept at handling a situation like this. The colonel who is in charge from the Highway Patrol is someone i know. I think he is doing everything right. He is personally moving around in the crowd. Look, when you make peaceful protests impossible, you will make rowdy protests predictable. And thats what we were having in ferguson. So i think and i said yesterday on this Network Early in the day that there would be far fewer incidents last night simply because the governor made the right decision and now the police are not viewed as an Occupying Force patrolling occupied territory. I thought that was not only frightening as an american, i thought that it was intimidating to the point of making us look unamerican. We expect within this hour possibly that the name of the officer involved in that incident which led to the death of Michael Brown will in fact be named. Are you worried that that could lead to more protests this evening . And what would you call upon people on how to react when that name becomes public . First of all, were going to have a were going to begin the reconciliation that is required tonight. Were going to be at the well Spring United Methodist Church right there off the main street in ferguson this evening to begin reconciliation. Now, i think i need to say that, look, when you withhold the name of a person, a Police Officer, it feeds into the whole thought and theory that this is going to be a whitewash. We knew the name of lee harvey oswald, the man who killed the president of the United States, right at the time of his arrest. And so i think that many of the people here in missouri just said, oh, theyre not giving the name. Theyre trying to figure out how to get around prosecution. And that obviously led to the intensity of the protests as well. Representative cleaver, thank you so much for coming on the program, we appreciate it. Take care. Good to be with you. And joining me now is the Huffington Post reporter who was arrested on wednesday night in mcdonalds during the protests and thats ryan reilly of course. Ryan, thanks for coming on the program. Sure, thanks for having me. So what we saw on wednesday night was described ads sort of the municipal version of shock and awe. We saw those massive artillery vehicles on the streets with tear gas being launched towards protesters. Ive seen pictures of a member of the clergy with a rubber bullet in their thigh. We saw al jazeeras cameras being pushed to the ground by Police Officers. Last night the figures of authority were in fact taking selfies with the protesters. How did all that happen in 12 hours . It was basically a new police force that came in. It was incredible to be out here last night. On wednesday night you saw basically during daytime hours even before things had even before they started firing tear gas and whatnot, they shut down the entire area and trained snipers on the crowd during a daytime peaceful protest. It turned out that isnt as good of a strategy as treating people like human beings. We had officers last night who a lot of them were from st. Louis city and, you know, i think it just really shows that if you go about this tactic, talk to people, there seems to be a much better strategy and you saw that demonstrated last night. If you dont have a machine gun pointed at someones head, theyre more likely to want to talk to you and communicate. Youre on the ground there and were starting to get more reports of what its like to live day in and day out in ferguson. One thing i found fascinating is that a lot of the residents really do feel like theyre under daily persecution from the police force. I read one anecdote that if you have an unpaid traffic ticket in ferguson youre at risk of a warrant and some members of the community dont even leave that i homes because theyre so worried the police will rough them up. From your conversations with the folks that have been protesting, how much of that is true, this fear of daily persecution there on the ground . On wednesday before my arrest and all that took place, we got to go out with the community and sort of follow people around as they were cleaning up. We stopped by an Auto Parts Store that had been smashed up, unfortunately. We talked to three employees who were inside there who were, you know, very disappointed about what happened to their store. All three of them had stories about runins with the police that, you know, hadnt gone well. Very much felt persecuted and mistreated by the local police here. So honestly i dont know i dont see how this ends without some sort of massive change in leadership. That just seems to be what all this is building up to. Its really interesting locally because the way the system works around this area is sort of incredible in that there are so many different jurisdictions and so many different municipalities. The local state senator here, who was tear gassed a few nights ago and has been in the crowd was saying that she has 41 different municipalities that she has to deal with. You can go a couple of blocks one way and suddenly youre in a different city and a whole Different Police force. It just makes little sense to me coming in here to see how this entire system is set up. Yeah, that seems to be some practical reform there on the horizon. Ryan reilly, thank you for joining us, we appreciate it. Thanks for having me. More ahead on ferguson, missouri, and how protest violence there could have a profound effect on Police Forces across the country. And were still, of course, awaiting that Police Presser at any moment where we expect to learn the name of the officer involved in the Fatal Shooting of Michael Brown. Were awaiting that Police Presser at any moment where we expect to learn the name of the officer involved in the Fatal Shooting of teen, Michael Brown, last saturday. When it happens we will bring it to you live here on msnbc. Now to iraq where a political crisis appears to have an averted, even as the military crisis goes on facing relentless pressure, iraqs longtime Prime Minister, nouri al maliki, agreed to give up his bid to hold on to power and step down. He said he would approve the Prime Minister designate. Malikis move was embraced inside iraq and back here in the u. S. Iraqs grand ayatollah who nudged maliki toward the door called it a rare opportunity to resolve political and security crises. Secretary of state john kerry called it, quote, a milestone decision. But president obama said the next Prime Minister has a tough job ahead. He still has a challenging task in putting a government together, but we are modestly hopeful that the Iraqi Government situation is moving in the right direction. During those same remarks, president obama praised the humanitarian mission undertaken by u. S. Troops in iraqs northern mountains. He said the effort to rescue thousands of displaced iraqis was executed almost flawlessly and that most of the troops involved will be coming home. He also said air strikes would continue, even though the pentagon says theres only so much the u. S. Can do. The threat that isil poses inside iraq is essentially an iraqi threat to face. We are we stand by and are willing to help and to coordinate a little bit with them, but were as the president said, were not going to become the iraqi air force. But the u. S. Is no longer alone in helping iraqis carry out the fight. The European Union met today to try to form a united front to provide aid to displaced iraqis and help kurdish fighters stop the insurgents advance. Several governments including france, the u. K. , the Czech Republic and the netherlands are either arming the kurds or considering it. With me to talk about all this, Florida Republican congresswoman elena ross lathan. Congresswoman, thank you for joining us. Thank you, luke. Much appreciated. Whats your Immediate Reaction to maliki stepping down and it was a fairly safe way, it was bloodless, and how much do you think this new Prime Minister can unite the country . It seems that the administration and congress are putting a lot of faith in this one man to try to bring the sectarian divisions that have lasted in iraq for many, many, many centuries. Well, thats true, luke. We had the same faith and hope on maliki and what a great disappointment he had been, just like karzai had been in afghanistan. Weve had failed leaders in these difficult positions, but now its much more crucial because weve got this growing threat of isil or Islamic State or whatever name theyre using today that already controls large swaths of syria, now a big area in iraq. And if that threat is not controlled, it could destabilize jordan, lebanon and really damage our u. S. Interests and our National Security threat. Now that specialist said this is an iraqi problem. While that is true, if we ignore that threat, it will soon become a u. S. Problem. So im worried about the stark difference between the way we framed the problem of isil and at the same time so many lim limitations on the military. Can the new Prime Minister in iraq succeed without success prolonged involvement by the United States isnt the country . He must but first he must show real support for the kurds. These are fighters willing to take isil on as the terrorist threat that they are. We need to get more involved with getting the kurds to build up their army and fight isil and we need to see what the real mission will be. Is he going to treat the isil threat as part of his new government . Also were worried about his alliances with iran. Iran has been very fullsome in their plays which makes us very nervous. Do you see the United States directly being involved in iraq at least throughout the next year securing the security situation we faced there with advisers and air strikes . I hope that we do get involved and that the president has said no boots on the ground, but our technology, luke, is so advanced. Our ability to do drone strikes and to help fighters like the kurds. It doesnt mean that we would get involved. Of course the limitations of the war powers resolution of 1973, but i think the president does have the authority to do these limited air strikes. He had the authority for the humanitarian mission that was so flawlessly carried out. And if it is going to be a prolonged direct involvement, then he must come back to congress. But i think that this is a war weary nation, but we need to confront this threat and i think that there are ways to do it without getting boots on the ground and i hope the president comes to congress, asks for that authorization. We need to deal with this threat. So limited engagement for the foreseeable future. Congresswoman, thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Thank you. Still ahead, were awaiting that Police Presser at any moment where we expect to learn the name of the officer involved in the Fatal Shooting of teen, Michael Brown. Still ahead, were awaiting that Police Presser here at any moment where we expect to learn the name of the officer involved in the Fatal Shooting of teenager, Michael Brown. That of course happened last saturday. We are joined by msnbc. Coms trymaine lee who is on the phone from ferguson whos been covering this story all week. Trymaine, give me a sense of the mood on the ground within the community that this officer could possibly be named in the next few minutes, within the hour perhaps, that would essentially give a face to the individual involved with the untimely death of Michael Brown. First of all, thank you for having me. Absolutely. When you look at whats happened over the last five days and this whole community has been torn asunder and unhinging at every corner, add to that a sense that the Police Department had either been kind of cover up whats going on and not being forthright, the idea that the name of the person who shot this unarmed young man will be relead is going a long way in continuing to ease the tensions. Last night a far cry from what we saw the previous night with the rubber bullets and tear gas. Now that the community is starting to settle down, this will go a long way, this next step in the process, could really go a long way in transitioning from these very rough and volatile days to something that looks a little more you know, a little smoother. Trymaine, we had congressman cleaver on the show earlier and he said that one of the real reasons why you saw such violent and massive protests was because there was a real fear within the ferguson Africanamerican Community that this incident would be whitewashed, that the name would never come out, that it would be hidden and just sort of business would go on as usual as has happened in ferguson. Talk about that, that one of the real reasons we saw these types of protests was because so many people were outraged. There was no name. We knew the name of Michael Brown, who was killed. We did not know who was involved in that. Of course. As the Police Department was withholding the name of the Police Officer, what we did hear from the police was that in this alleged confrontation that took place between Michael Brown and the officer, that the officer was injured. And so at the same time while were getting that kind of detail, why arent you releasing the other details. And again, theres such a long history here of distrust and there had been nothing to indicate that the police would have been forthcoming, would have come to the community with their hands open saying this is exactly what happened. And so the fear that not only would the situation be swept under the rug, and they thanked the media for being there and for people to actually care and acknowledge not just their past issues but this moment. And so now has residents and all the young people with all the energy that had been out there have kind of seized the moment and asking for this and wanting this. Its a very critical moment for what happens moving forward. Msnbc. Coms trymaine lee. Thank you so much for joining us and for your great reporting this week. Thank you. Were keeping our eyes out for that presser and of course when it comes up, we will bring it to you live. Were waiting on that Police Presser which could happen at any moment in ferguson, missouri. We expect to learn the name of the officer involved in the Fatal Shooting of teenager, Michael Brown, last saturday. Well bring that live when it happens. What a difference a day makes. After four straight nights of violent clashes, gunfire and arrests in ferguson, last night captain ronald johnson, who grew up in the neighborhood, joined marchers. We have no police line here. As you can see, none of the officers have gas masks around their waists. So and i dont have one on either. But the new tone cant erase images of the last few days of Police DrivingArmored Vehicles wearing riot gear camouflage helmets and using tear gas on al jazeera news crew. Those images are raising new questions about the militarization about the state and local Police Forces. The president warned that there is no excuse for police to use Excessive Force against peaceful protests. Attorney general eric holder released a statement saying, quote, at a time when we must seek to rebuild trust between Law Enforcement and the local community, i am deeply concerned that the deployment of military equipment and vehicles sends a conflicting message. Across the political spectrum in an Unusual Coalition of democrats and libertarian and republicans raised concerns about the fact that the streets of ferguson were looking like a war zone. Rand paul wrote we must demilitaryize the police saying anything that doesnt think race does not skew of application of criminal justice in this country is not paying close enough attention. Elizabeth warren tweeted this is america, not a war zone. Across the country in chicago, miami, portland and new york city, thousands gathered to protest police tactics. So how did we end up here . For over a decade, federal programs that began or were expanded in response to the september 11th attacks have transferred the weapons of war from the battlefields to state and local Police Departments. According to the New York Times, the 360,000 bear cat armored truck on patrol in ferguson was paid for by the department of homeland security, it was grant money. Since 2003, dhs has spent 9. 4 million in st. Louis down fee for the bear cat, two helicopters, night vision equipment and body armor. The pentagon has also given st. Louis county two helicopters and a rotorcraft as well as eight utility vehicles and night vision equipment. Thats through whats called its excess property program, also known as the 1033 program, which gives equipment, including weapons, to Law Enforcement agencies, 4. 3 billion since it was established in the early 1990s to fight the war on drugs. Compared with other urban areas, st. Louis county has received less surplus equipment according to pentagon data crunched by the New York Times. Since 2006 more than 432 mraps, 435 other Armored Vehicles, 535 aircraft, 44,900 night vision pieces, 93,000 machine guns and 180,000 magazines have ended up in the hands of state and local Law Enforcement. Many of those have gone to smaller rural or suburban communities. The pentagon defends the program. A defense official told nbc news, quote, it is prudent to allow Law Enforcement agencies to use mraps versus scrapping them or allowing them to sit in storage. But now congress is responding. On thursday georgia democrat hank johnson said its time to scale back the pentagon program. And congressman johnson joins me now to talk about this. Congressman johnson, this is a bill youve been working on for some time. Obviously the issue has gone to the forefront after whats happened in ferguson over the last few days. Give us just a quick review. Do you believe that this bill, which would really set some tough precedent for the military to give these types of weapons to local Police Forces, do you think it has a chance to move forward in congress . Well, i believe that what were getting now with the visuals that have been displayed on tv, i believe that the American People and their legislators have seen the results of the militarization. And that militarization creates the type of atmosphere where its difficult, if not impossible, to do community policing. You want to be out to be able to reach out and grab someone and hug them as opposed to stand there like a robot in full armor with a gas mask on. You cant even talk to your citizens. And so its completely over the top in terms of its usefulness at that Current Situation in missouri. It is something that, you know, militarization of our streets is not something that is akin to the democratic form of government that we have here in this country. Now theres if you look at the issue, some folks say this might not make any sense in a place like st. Louis county, but in cities like new york, like los angeles, like chicago, like washington, that face real terrorism threats, this type of program does have some merit. Do you agree that it does have some merit or do you think it should be completely stopped . Well, i believe that weve got to get civilians back in control of the acquisition of equipment for the Police Departments in the country. When we have the d. O. D. Program, the 1033 program that can transfer without cost directly to a local or small Law Enforcement agency, even a campus, a state Campus Police agency can have an mrap, totally unnecessary. But when you have that element of the agency being able to apply to the d. O. D. To receive the free surplus military equipment without any boundaries as to the type of equipment that can be acquired, then youre moving away from civilian control over the Police Department. And so what the bill that im going to introduce will do is to put some limits on this 1033 program. It will ban the acquisition or the transfer of automatic weapons of 50 caliber or more weaponry, Armored Vehicles, armored drones, silencers, stun grenades, just a plethora of equipment that if a local Law Enforcement department should have it, then the citizens representatives should allocate money to pay for that equipment. You can purchase that equipment on the open market. Yeah, so its not just a direct handout thats whats left in the pentagon storage room. Congressman, we appreciate you coming on the show to talk about this bill. Take care. We, of course, are awaiting this press conference at any minute live from ferguson, missouri, where we expect to hear from Law Enforcement. They will name, we believe, the officer involved in the incident that led to the death of Michael Brown last saturday. When that happens, we will, of course, take it to you guys live. Lets take a listen to this press conference. Later on sometime afternoon we can get together again and then ill take questions. So i just want to give you a little timeline of what happened on august 9th. From 11 48 to noon, the officer involved in the shooting was on a sick call on glen arc. There was an ambulance present. At 11 51 there was a 911 call from a Convenience Store nearby, not this one. At 11 52 dispatch gave a description of a robbery suspect over the radio. A different officer arrived at the store where the strong arm robbery occurred. A further description, more detail was given over the radio and stated the officer was or the suspect was walking toward quick trip. Our officer left the sick call. He encounter ed the im sorr. At 12 01 p. M. Our officer encountered Michael Brown on canfield drive. At 12 04 a second officer arrived on the scene, immediately following the shooting, and at 12 05 a supervisor was dispatched to the scene and subsequent officers arrived. There has been some questions about the calling of an ambulance. The ambulance that was at the sick case on glen arc was coming by immediately following the shooting and they did respond to assess Michael Brown. So im going to have some Police Officers going to be handing out packets that have all the information that was requested and the sunshine request concerning the robbery, were going to give those packets, first of all, to those agencies that have made the sunshine request and then anybody else who wants them, i think we have enough to give out. Weve got quite a few. Im sorry. The officer that was involved in the shooting of Michael Brown was darren wilson. Hes been a Police Officer for six years, has had no disciplinary action taken against him. He was treated for injuries which occurred on saturday. Again, i wont be taking any questions at this time but the packets will be handed out by my officers. The name is darren darren. Wilson, wilson. How old is he . And you just heard right there the name of the officer involved in the incident that led to the death of Michael Brown is darren wilson. That is the officers name. We were told right there by the Law Enforcement official that hes a veteran of six years on the force and that he was in fact injured resulting from that incident that occurred with Michael Brown. The name again, darren wilson, a sixyear veteran of the force there in ferguson. Lets bring in Jim Cavanaugh now to talk about this. Jim, the officer being named, the Law Enforcement official there went at length to say that he was in fact injured in this incident. Whats it mean now for the local police force in ferguson that this officers name is out there and how does that change the dynamic of this story . Well, i think the lesson for Police Commanders and executives, luke, is if this had been released within 24 hours it probably would have stemmed a lot of the angst in the neighborhood there. So it probably should have been put out earlier. They certainly have the officer located where they believe hes safe and theyre working with the prosecutors through the investigation to result in a criminal warrant for him. Its good that its out there. When youre a policeman, you know that whatever actions you take is going to be public. You never are guaranteed that anything you do is going to be secret. You put on a uniform, you put on a badge, thats the way it goes. Nobody should be surprised by that. But again, the officer is going to have to make sure hes safe and anybody whos threatening him or tries to harm him, of course, would be a crime as well. The injuries on this is face did occur likely in the struggle with Michael Brown where michael was trying to pull away from the police suv and the officer is trying to pull him in so he might have banged his head. Well have to see where the injury is, maybe on the car stanchion or michael might have struck him trying to get away from where he grabbed his neck. So the injury could be consistent with the facts we know already. And obviously for folks just tuning in, we have breaking news. The officer who was involved in that incident with Michael Brown has been named. Darren wilson, once again a sixyear veteran of the police force there. Were talking with Jim Cavanaugh, our msnbc Law Enforcement analyst. Jim, you just mentioned that now the officer is probably in hiding. He will become the public face of this story alongside of Michael Brown. What does a department do in a situation like this where one of their own essentially becomes a pub luck pariah to the community while this case moves forward . Well, its really tough on these small departments, luke. You make a great point. Huge Police Forces and huge federal agencies can deal with these things easier. They have lots of people that are always involved in lots of conflicts and so forth and they just have a bigger organization to deal with it. When you have a small Police Department, 63 officers, its a lot tougher on them to deal with this so they have got to get some help from their county and state officials. Moving that state trooper in there, the captain has done a good job to quell the feelings overnight. Mostly a peaceful night. Just a really historic march. I thought it was very good. Good. Hopefully things have calmed down. Certainly there will be some threats on the interprnet and t usual stuff. We can deal with that in Law Enforcement as well. And the officer deserves justice as well. Michael brown deserves justice and so does the officer. Jim kavanaugh, thank you very much. Were joined by ron allen who is on the ground in ferguson. Ron, the folks in that community have been waiting for almost a week now to hear that name that the officer darren wilson. A sixyear veteran of the police force there. A lot of folks are saying one of the reasons we saw protests because the officer wasnt named. There was a fear it would be whitewash. It would go on business as usual. The public would not have the Information Available to them about what happened with Michael Brown. Were seeing Immediate Reaction now that the officer is named well, luke, you can see behind me, if we can get our camera to get through the clutter up here. Theres a small group of people who are here listening to the announcement. And theyre not happy about it. What the police chief said is that apparently there was a robbery happening near where the shooting took place. Here at the gas station that is behind me on the other side here. Its been the scene of so much of the damage. Apparently the officer was responding to reports of suspects with the robbery in the area near where Michael Brown and his companion were walking. To the community that sounds like profiling seen in the negative way. That exacerbates at least this small groups concerns about how theyre being treated by the police force. Thats a short term instant reaction by a small group of people. I think generally speaking here, though, people were demanding the name of the officer because hes a public servant. Theyre paying taxes for the sale i are. It was the principle of the matter. The idea of transparency. A lot of people couldnt understand hes the Police Officer and here to protect us. We should at least know who he is. The authorities said it was too dangerous. There had been debt tlets. You know there were names on leaked on the internet by any number of groups that turned out not to be the officers. There were officers from surrounding communities brought here to protect the families of the Ferguson Police department. Now its out there. Well see what the reaction is. To be clear, protest wasnt naming the officer. The protest is about the fact the young mans life has been lost and taken so tragically. Theres a lot of anger and tension. We had a quiet and peaceful night here last night for the first time in a long time. But its now one night down. So many more to go. Again, still trying to get more reaction to see how people feel. They are hoping they are diffusing the situation. Bringing the tension down by providing more information. Nbcs ron allen. Thank you for joining us. Im joined by a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter from the New York Times aclu. War crimes. The excessive militarization of american policing, and jim kavanaugh, a former atf agent. And jim, ill start with you. Quickly, we heard right there this very choppy press conference where, in facts, the Police Officer alleged that from my reading it, that an officer is there on a call responded to a robbery call, and then thats what lead to the confrontation with Michael Brown. Right. And thats why the chief made a mistake here where he didnt answer questions. Because the journalists would have asked the questions and he could have clarified it. I dont think he was inferring that Michael Brown was a suspect in a robbery. Because the behavior of the officer who murdered Michael Brown was not indicative of that. He told him to get expletive on the sidewalk. That was he didnt suspect him in the robbery or he would have been acting different. I think the chief left it kind of fuzzy. He should have clarified it and should have had some questions. And we have the byte of when the officer was named. Were going to play that. The officer that was involved in the shooting of Michael Brown was darren wilson. Hes been a Police Officer for six years. Has had no disciplinary action taken against him. He was treated for injuries, which occurred on saturday. Again, i wont be taking any questions at this time. Kara, we hear the fuzzy story about a robbery, perhaps, and then this ultimately leads to the altercation with Michael Brown. The officer is just named. But it seems to be theres more questions than answers after that press conference. I think that is right. Thing are a lot more questions. I think well have to wait to see what more we learn about the killing of Michael Brown. In the meantime, there are a lot of questions we need to be asking and looking at in terms of policing generally. In particular policing of communities of color, Police Response to the incident, and the history of the militarized policing in the u. S. Matt, ill give you the last word. More questions than answers there. We have touched on so many things with the discussion. The militarization of local police force, Race Relations in america. From what you saw from that press conference right there, i dont think the story is over by any means. I think its going to even go further. Into interesting territory. Its fascinating territory. If you look at what we seen yesterday in washington. People are saying its america not a war zone. I think its important to remember for the last decade weve been telling police you are on the front lines of a war. Weve been, you know, the federal government has been giving both the pent gob program we discussed earlier and federal grants getting the equipment out. And the only controversy has been who can get it fastest and deserves it most. Its interesting to see how fast the political wind shift. The Justice Department is concerned about militarization. They have a Grant Program that gives tear gas, rubber bullets, armored equipment and guns. Certainly a conversation well continue. We thank you for staying on with us with the press conference.
