Unprecedented string of pardons they concede could be an abuse of power and pack firbackfire. It shows names why some republicans are getting nervous, possible beneficiaries run from Paul Manafort who trump claimed he barely knew before 2016 so why pardon him and two, what you see on the screen, the absurd concept of a celebrity pardon for joe exotic from the tiger king. This is real life. Pardon debate has republicans nervous because trump has shown little concern for anything other than trotting out giuliani to lie about the election since his loss. There is no other prorepublican or proamerican plotting as far as we can tell. So regardless of how this impacts democracy, the rule of law or the gops hold on the senate, donald trump is mulling barrelling ahead. Meanwhile, the legal teams efforts are rejected by the courts. Forced to drop lawsuits after admitting there is no voter fraud of evidence. Now weve hit a period where giuliani is attacking a Republican Legislature for letting down america adding shes ashamed of them stoking internal divisions heading into the critical georgia run offs. Now like it or not, president s have broad pardon power so this particular trump era battle, which you can see republicans are increasingly nervous about, it boils down to judgment, not breaking rules or norms. The rules authorize trump to pardon anyone for federal crimes if he chooses to. The president elect is already warning that even if its allowed, the current president s actions could undermine the nations standing around the world. Well, it concerns me in terms of what precedent it sets and how the rest of the world looks at us as a nation of laws and and justice. Were joined by former federal prosecutor glen and Michelle Goldberg for the New York Times. Given this is allowed, what is your view the president elect makes there are other costs . You know, ari, well be talking a lot about pardons. I fear for the next couple weeks and probably for the next 48 days because it is likely to rain pardons. Were hearing more and more reporting donald trump is considering pardoning any number of people and it raises so many questions about the pardon power. The first, i think, most important thing to know and everybody has said this repeatedly, including me, is that if youre granted a pardon, that agagenerally extinguishes fifth amendment right such that you could be forced or compelled to testify even if that testimony included things that incriminated you because you cant be prosecuted for it. But, you know, it not quite that simple. Its more complex than that because if youre granted a federal pardon, you could very well say thats fine but i may have committed state crimes. So i let me steer you, counselor, a little bit back to the question. I appreciate the fifth amendment privilege but im curious bottom line, do you think it is a problem even if allowed that donald trump go forward with these type of pardons and what do you think of what we showed, Rudy Giuliani claiming he has no interest in any of this, meanwhile, there is reporting, hard reporting multiple sources saying they are talking about this for a lot of these people. Ari, ordinarily it would be a political problem but donald trump immune or unconcerned as do his republican supporters glen, im asking you, do you think this is a good idea or not . I think its a horrendous idea for the rule of law. Prosecutors, ari, generally are not fond of pardons because we spend months and mondays, sometimes years investigating indietdii indicting and prosecuting crime and when somebody wipes that away with the sign of a president ial pen, thats not only bad for prosecutors and victims, its bad for the country. What message does it send . Then ill bring michelle in. Im going lawyer to lawyer with you on the coquestions here. A lot criticize politicians when they do it, what message does it send at the end of the trump era . These can become normalized but they shouldnt be in these final two months, december, january, according to the reporting he is focused not on battling covid, not even on the legacy of the other punitive policy goals they claim to have about the rest of the nation, but just trying to get other people off the hook that are in his circle. It sends two messages. One is that the Trump Administration needs and the second message future politicians are coming in committing crime, have at it. You can always be pardoned at the end of the day. Michelle . I thought i was a pretty close student of the criminality and corruption of the Trump Administration but it shocked me that they have 20 people in mind, right . I was thinking who are the 20 people close to trump who have committed potential crimes and look, i think it goes without saying that this would disgrace america on the world stage, that this is an example of trump sort of burning the place, burning down the place on the way out. Its a smash and grab administration. All these crazy things during their last days putting utterly super partisan Conspiracy Theory at high level petitions in the pentagon. You know, its just a sort of free for all in these last few days. I would say that if he ends up pardoning his children, which is something that has been talked about that hes considering a preemptive pardon for his three oldest children and again, i have a very low opinion of ivanka trump. I dont know what federal crimes she is even alleged to have committed, but i think she is at least part of investigations in washington d. C. And a state investigation in new york and i really hope that state prosecutors if she acre secepts pardon will look at that as evidence of guilt on her part and that that will some, i hope that that will, you know, sort of help them make the case publicly that this is not just a political vendetta as ivanka trump has claimed on twitter, that in fact, if she accept as pardon, it will mean there is real criminality that democratic attorney generals and democratic district attorneys have a right to be investigating. Yeah, i think you put it really well because again, this is so important for the record and Going Forward and governing this nation. The fact there is 20 people you can come up with beyond the wellknown folks like manafort who have been convicted or flynn who have been pardoned is really striking and the Supreme Court has clarified and held that it is an admission of guilt. You dont want your name in any of this if you feel youre completely innocent and there is no doubt, you know. Then you have the way this is all playing out as not exactly the best closing message that youll fix the economy or covid or anything else especially in Georgia Reading from your piece, michelle, you said the maga revolution def vowers its own and a president that spreads malicious conspiracy theories and turns the denial of reality into a loyalty test. This may seem like a plot twist that would work in a novel, oh, of course its karma but it happened rather quickly since the election loss. What were you getting at in this piece that was rather interesting . I was talking about, weve seen a lot of footage of particularly ll lly election of in georgia denouncing the insightment of violence from trump and his lackeys and while on one hand, i appreciate the integrity of these officials and i think that theyre the reason weve averted a constitutional crisis, state level officials in many places, i also have to wonder where their outrage was before it was before trumps violence and before trumps Conspiracy Theory and before the threats of his supporters was directed at them because nothing about what trump is doing is particularly new and so these are republicans, they supported trump in the case of georgia secretary of state, he says he still supports trump even as trump continues to demonize him and insight threats against his family. I think youre seeing republicans who tolerated a huge amount of abuse and civic evils are taken a back when directed at them and the final part of this is youre seeing certain allies of the president or at least people fancy themselves of the president create saing so m doubt about integrity in georgia saying dont even vote in the upcoming run off. I dont know how effective that will be but you see some conservatives that tolerated huge geysers of misinformation. Suddenly, when it threatens republican power, they, you know, theyre outraged. Yeah, i think you lay that out and there is hypocrisy to that obviously, but it may be a learning curve so you can ethically look why its absurd and late but also question how that affects what Donald Trumps impact is in the republican party. The New York Times, your paper reported he wants to control the rnc and the party but if it keeps going like this month after month, there may be a growing course of folks that say i dont even want that. I want to keep both panelists on an update of the reporting into that story we first brought you. The bribery for pardon scheme. The New York Times reporting trump associate haves been scrutinized in it. The doj investigating how a donor and fundraiser for President Trump and his soninlaw kushner had the suspected scheme to offer a bribe to get some sort of clemen see for a tax crime. The sources say San Francisco real estate billionaire sanford dillar allegedly, again, these are just reports about the investigation but enlisted someone you may have heard of, Elliott Brody and also tried to enlist Jared Kushners lawyer, very wellknown in washington to get some sort of message to the white house. As part of the effort, he said there would be some sort of quote substantial political contribution. Abby lulls lawyer says there was no bribe ever paid. Glen, this is tricky. When it first broke it was tantalizing and were careful to know at the time we dont know and it didnt necessarily state from the first filing, who if anyone, at the white house might have been basically exposed by this. With that reporting, whats your analysis . So i agree with you. It is a tricky one because people want to lead to the conclusion folks in the Administration Must be involved and culpable and i dont think were there, at least not in the reporting yet so we have to wait to see when more information comes out but, you know, michelle made such a great point which is that if donald trump starts delivering pardons to, for example, the family members like ivanka as michelle says, we dont know what federal crimes ivanka may have committed so how do we go about evaluating whether thats a corrupt pardon and potentially challengeable in court or whether its perfectly fine but it just happens to be born of nepotism because shes the president s daughter. Keep a close eye moving forward on the scope of these pardons, what crimes are included and what do they tell us because and ill finish, if donald trump pardons ivanka for something that he may have been involved in as a potential coconspira r coconspirator, we have a pardon of a different color and it might be susceptible to a court challenge. Ive been reporting and there is not much reviewable in the pardon power. Thats clear in the precedent. The wider question of why are you being pardoned, what did you do and only you know what you did hangs over this and thats not just an outside legal view, thats what we reported with republicans going wait a minute, if you do this much pardoning out the door, youre closing the circle on one of the main concerns from both your opponents and independent experts this was a very swampy and corrupt administration. I use corrupt in the legal sense, not as an adjective. I got to fit in a break. I thank glen and michelle. Coming up in 30 seconds, their calling it the maga civil war in georgia. Obama now with a call to action and were following the money new revelations where trump was spending Campaign Money and biden getting blunt and planning for this transition and saying what it means if trump skips out and snubs all that and Michael Beschloss and Eric Michael Dyson tonight. Were back in 30 seconds. Michan tonight. Were back in 30 seconds well, the theme is in the air in politics right now. Michelle goldberg was talking to us about it. What happens if trumpism starts eating itself alive. You have the president going to georgia tomorrow. This is the first rally since losing the election. He wants to boost republicans in the run off races that will determine control of the United States senate and also heading into something that many say even in his party is of his own making. Politico calling it the maga civil war. Telling republicans dont vote because why, because of everything donald trump told them, the election is rigged, right . That has other protrump voices at their whits end. Do these suburban knights need a United Republican Party or people saying dont vote on january 5th because that would be perpetuating a criminal process. I almost fell out of my chair. Yall dont deserve to win if youre that stupid, frankly. Sorry. You dont deserve to win if youre that stupid. Newt gingrich saying this is destructive their dont vote strategy will cripple america. F this legal circus is not very legal anymore, which is feeding this political internal chaos. Trump allies, ingrim amplified that messaging and just dont like the idea that theyre worried it could cost a senate seat or two. Republican senators in the critical georgia run off. Purdue refusing to admit biden won but he was caught on tape in what he thought was a private zoom. Its not private anymore talking with republicans, acknowledging, i guess, that he wasnt telling truth in public because he talks about a quote. We know what this change of command at the top will mean with our foreign relations. If we can keep the majority in the senate, we can be a buffer on some of the things the biden camp has been talking about in terms of foreign policy. The Washington Post obtained that. Thats what they say when they dont think people are listening. Politics, you know how they roll. Now, i want to be clear with you. A lot of this is selfinflicted wounds. Politico calls it a gop civil war. Its not good but georgia mathematically remains a tough climb for democrats at the president ial level, biden narrowly flipped it. No democrat won a senate race there in 20 years. Democrats will need to win two. Thats a tall order. Meanwhile, former president obama campaigning virtually for those georgia democrats talking about whats at stake. The special election in georgia is going to determine ultimately a course of the biden presidency. If you dont have a majority, they can block just about anything. The senate really matters. Obama speaking from experience there. Coming up, we have a very special guest that worked with oc obama on civil rights issue and im proud to bring back michael eric dyson. President elect Biden Takes Office in 47 days and while donald trump reportedly now is planning to snub the entire event which is unusual, biden speaking out saying its important for the country, not to biden personally, that the out going president swallow his pride and show up. Important in a sense that we are able to demonstrate at the end of this chaos that hes created that there is peaceful transfer of power with the competing parties standing there, sharking hands and moving on. But it is totally his decision and its of no personal consequence to me but i do think it is for the country. Thats a very diplomatic way of saying i dont care if you come to my party, i won, its my party, but you might want to do this for everyone else. Whether that prevails on donald trump, well, only he will know. I also want to share other reporting we have thats pretty interesting. Financial information new which reveals that while running for reelection, donald trump was continuing to prioritize personally enriching his family over spending resources in a tight race that he of course went on to lose. Donald Trumps Campaign for example spent over a Million Dollars at Trump Properties in the final weeks before the election. The rnc paid 300,000, thats real money just to buy up a bunch of copies of don juniors book and since the defeat, donald trump raised over 207 million, a whopping amount for his post presidency pact which is fine, you can have a pact but hes been doing it by misleading his own supporters implying that most of the money would go to liz legal fight to stay in office, which was a lie. Im joined by president ial historian Michael Beschloss as we say on fridays for really all of the above. Nice to have you, sir. Hi, ari. Same here. Always. What did you think of joe bidens answer on that tricky one, im not in the prediction business, well find out what happens on january 20th on january 20th but your thoughts . Ari, ive been trying to imagine what this will be like. Donald trump will have his own counter inaugural. Maybe there will be a circus tent and maybe rudy will swear him in for a fake second term and have a president ial motorcade well be paying for as american taxpayers paying for what is a former president and maybe hell put it on paper view and guess who gets the money with a 207 million that you just mentioned . You know, when i got into this business sometime ago, i didnt think the president s would treat the presidency like their personal go fund me page. I mean, hundreds of millions of dollars going to be used to pay off his loans or expenses at maralago . We used to be scandalized by things that Richard Nixon did like improve his homes at government expense and back date a gift of his Vice President ial papers to get a tax benefit. That is nothing like what were talking about. Yeah, you make great points. Thats why we want to spotlight this. Its skpefd fevidence and finan clear. It was only four years ago i was out at maga events in 2016 and particularly in the primaries, one of the biggest applause lines you may remember, michael, was saying he was rich. He didnt need the money like the other politicians. That was appealing and he had been promoted as rich by many including of course famously on an nbc entertainment program. So i could understand why people having been told that over and over thought yeah, if hes rich, at least he wont be on the take. Almost a quote unquote nonpartisan point. It wasnt true. Its not how he governed. More swampy and corrupt in more ways documented and now i give you an easy question, if hes so rich and hes been in office four years leaving office now, why does he need to swipe 200 million from people with allegedly far less money from him just to leave the white house . Well, thank you for the straight line, ari. The answer is he must not be very well off and must need the money and that opens up all sorts of possibilities for the next 47 days, is he going to start selling state secrets to foreign governments who are hostile to us . Is he going to threaten to do all sorts of bad things unless hes paid money . Is he going to sell his enforcement of one of these vaccines . I mean, im not suggesting that hes going to do any of these things but not impossible when you got a president who needs money and may be willing to do a lot of things maybe Abraham Lincoln wouldnt have. I dont know if im taking to Michael Beschloss or tom clancy because you just rattled off a bunch of horrific white house plots we would all hope are nowhere near possible. I image narry. This is a piece of level of selfenrichment. If youre donating, for example, the rnc and being told this alleged billionaire family needs to spend Campaign Money on don junior books, something doesnt add up and i say that on behalf of people who exercise their political free speech to make the donations. The other thing i got to get you on, take a listen to joe biden discussing what he says is the secret out reach hes getting from some republicans. There have been more than several sitting republican senators who private recalled me and congratulated me, and i understand the situation they find themselves in. And until the election is clearly decided and the minds of the Electoral College votes, they get put in a very tough position. What do we glean from the way he wants to govern from what hes doing there . Well, that he wants to have a unified country and reach to the other side the same way that almost every other president in American History has done with the exception of donald trump and this socalled trump counter inaugural if hes going to really have a publicity stunt, what are we going to see for the next four years is donald trump going to be parading around county fairs charging money to see him claiming hes the legitimate president of the United States and joe biden is not and given the state of things in this country, an awful lot of people might believe that. Thats not going to be great for joe biden. Weve got a president coming in with a shadow over him that we should ignore but may be something that other president s have not dealt before, dealt with before. Its unbelievable. Yeah, you are such a thoughtful and restrained person with you being a historian. I dont usually talk this way. I mean, i listen to myself. I dont even its hard for me to even believe its me talking and saying these things but this is a situation were in. Well, thats all i was going to do. My job is often very easy. I just repeat my obvious observations but im reminding viewers if youve watched michael like i have over the years on tv about a range of parties and president s and figures, i dont usually hear you talk like this but youre speaking about what this post presidency can be the answer is you live long enough, you get to see everything in lifer, rig, right . Amen. Always good to end the week with you. Thank you. Same here, have a great weekend. You, too, sir. How everybody from obama to artists are making a big push to replicate what they say helped biden in november with a very special guest. Another lifechanging technology from abbott. So you dont wait for life. You live it. We turn to the one and only professor Eric Michael Dyson, reckoning with race in america. I want what he wants. Good to see you, as well. Lets get right to it. Its got so much serious topics. Sometimes you write dear emit till slow terror bleeds into every crevis of blackness and attempt of policing the unyielding bias and Society Institutions and the astonishing and persistent social inequality and unreliable upward mobility growing shakier by the day. Tell us what youre saying and why you said it this way. Yeah, im saying that what we saw in ferguson, what we see in so many poor black communities is the accumulation of hurt of trama, over decades and sometimes over centuries. Professor Walker Johnson has a brilliant book that traces it from the history of enslavement down to what p hahappened with brown in st. Louis. That Community Like so many others are under enormous attack and assault and when you see them fatally come bust and explode, its not something lit, a fuse lit yesterday. It been lit for quite awhile. The inequality and social injustice, the inability to have access to housing that is fair and just, the inability to have Educational Opportunities that provide people an entree into the middle class along with homeownership. When you look at all of those deficits that people of color endure, especially black people, finally, when a Police Person kills a black person, that is igniting something that has been indeed building up for so long. Yeah. And thats why the history is so alive. Indeed. There may be areas of life where some people feel they have a fresh start. They can live without the oppression or knowledge of history and just kind of a choice. Youre really recounting how racism makes that not available for so many people because of on going historical oppression and everything it leads to which brings us to the policing issues that now are at the forefront of pressures on the biden administration. Barack obama was saying stop Mitch Mcconnell before he stops you. I want to get your views on it. Politico reporting democrats have a bill that would do something that many have called for, which is just ending this type of immunity for police. Biden hasnt gone that far instead saying they want to quote reign it in and providing little indication of what that looks like. Your view on that issue and how important should it be in a biden era . Thats a healthy discussion. Isnt it beautiful to have a return to squabbles among parties, not the total democracy and npost presidency will provie for us. Donald trump is engaging in a soft coup but maybe a coup thats silent but at the same time trying to subvert democracy. Its a return to business as usual in the best sense of that word. I think the democrats ought to hammer that out. I think those who understand that policing has been detriment l and for everyone who says no, lets just reform the police, thats been tryied for a long time. We tried a lot of stuff but Police Unions are so powerful, the attempt to reign in Police Departments is often thwarted by the independent autonomous and outrageous and sometimes it seems to me nearly unlawful practic practices of Police Unions and at the same time, when we talk about Community Policing where police Pay Attention to neighborhoods they come from, maybe because if im from part of the community, i see my uncle, my aunt, my cousin its kinship and i wont treat you as dreadfully as other cops may do. I think that battle is a necessary one. Are we talking about reform from within . Lets not forget in the 1800s they had an argument about abolition of slavery and a lot of white people and others were opposed to that but eventually, it became the law of the land and made for better communication and democracy in this country. Perhaps policing is headed in the same direction. Yeah, you see that distance between biden and others because you have to act fast typically in administration. Im running out of time but you are joining us on december 4th. We want to wish on behalf of the beat to sean carter and jayz today is someone you worked with and wrote about, your thoughts. Thanks for being here. Thank you for having me. Thank you for having me. 100 . Im thrilled to have you. Well get into many things. You look at that photo and your life. What did it mean to be in that oval office with president obama and your reflections on what just happened in november . Well, really, it let us know that we had a lot of potential in our future. We sat down. It wasnt too political. It was more about just conversing about what was going on in our community, what do we think our future held and, you know, amongst all of us, there is a lot of different views and made it dope sitting there with the dang president obama. Man, it just really inspired me on another level. Rick, you go from obama to trump now you have obamas v. P. Biden as president elect. As you know, hiphop is heard and sometimes misheard or misunderstood but many, many rappers used to shutout trump and you have some of the most trump references in the old d s days. Walk us through what that is about. What did that mean then and how has that evolved for you . I think, of usually, our early references to trump was the lack of knowledge. We had very little knowledge of his personal history. I think it was more leaning towards his financial status when you go to vegas you may stay in a hotel named after him or in manhattan and i think thats what it was. Hiphop, we love we lean and we idolize success and wealth and i think its a lot of positive things in that but at the same time, as you go and get older and learn more things, you kind of have to make a few changes. Thats interesting. I appreciate you saying it in that candid way. Okay, you know what you know when you know it. Obviously, now, we do hear you shouting out obama more when you say like thought it was obama when i came through, im talking different commas than you lame dudes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Where does biden fit into all this . I mentioned the obama cosign seems to matter to a lot of people but hes neither as big of a personality as the last two president s or flashing. What do you think of joe biden being the next president . I think my personal opinion wouldnt even really matter at this point. I think right now its all about supporting our upcoming president and see what it turns out to be. Thats the way im going to do. Im going to sit back and watch him work. Okay. I want to get into your business ventures. The other thing i got to ask you, whenever you and drake come together you write about this in your book, its a hit. Every single time its a hit. Hes, of course, a global pop sensation. I think its fair to say, you can tell me if you disagree, that you guys have somewhat different life experiences. You certainly have different flows. My opinion as a listener. Tell us about what it is working with drake and why its always a hit. I believe, you know, he has so many different angles he can approach records. We all know drake is a very lyrical emcee but has one of the most candid voices women really gravitate towards. So once were in the studio, he could go from spitting boss to, you know, hitting a note and its just one of those things that make him the artist he is. It makes him so unique and makes him, you know, one of the greatest hit makers of our time. Yeah, youre talking about versatility, which brings me perfectly into the next ross project i want to talk about. So ross hangs with me. Let me give everyone a little background. Were talking what is going on with this pandemic. You have, this with the pandemic. This is important with healthcare. 5 Million People lost coverage since covid hit. We know statistically that adds to risk factors for getting sick or getting treatment. As im about to turn to another project. Hes spoken out about his own health scares. Ross is back at home after four days in the hospital. Somebody reported he was unresponsive. This isnt the first time hes had Major Medical issues. He suffered two seizures in 2011.
