Republican leadership leaving town without their promised deal for relief. The stakes are real. Many americans who lost jobs have been getting this extra 600 which helps people just to get by but that expires next week. Meanwhile, the way that the congress banned landlords from evicting people behind on their rental, given what is going on in the country,le people that was logical, that affects up to 12 Million Peoples real lives and it ends at midnight tonight. This is not a drill for americans and people all over the country. It is all in the balance as Senate Majority leader mcconnell is leaving town without progress on that promised deal. This is deadly serious. The house is burning down in terms of the Economic Security of americas families and these people are wherever they may be this weekend. Everybody wants to talk about being family fremdly. Lets not squawk about 600. Thats Speaker Pelosi hitting mcconnell. He says for his part that he does warm to try to get a proposal out as soon as monday but the reports are that might be scaled down. Of course, the virus and desperation is going up. Over 4 million cases. Over 145,000 deaths. Another 1,000 in a single day. There are 52 Million People under employed in america. And while we debate many things these days,le political matters, scientific matters, there is almost no one who will stand up and claim these people are without jobs because of anything they did wrong. We all know theyre without jobs because of this macro economic, macro health catastrophe. So is this a time if ever there were one where the congress would step up, including the Senate Republican leadership to try to give those people some support. Lets get right to it with william shatner, adviser to cnbc, Whitney Cooper from rutgers, and president ial historian, jon meachum. I could literally start anywhere because we have three special experts. Always a good choice to make. Professor cooper, i start with you on the humanity of this. Something youve written about. Those 52 Million People who are unemployed, as i mentioned, these 12 Million People until midnight tonight, they have some federal protection from eviction and then they dont. What should we think about, what should we care about for them . Well, part of the challenge that we have is that we have a National Leader who has no empathy. Hes never had to work a day in his life for anything and he doesnt understand what that level means. Were seeing people standing in long lines for unemployment all over the country in the middle of a pandemic which endangers their lives and their lively hoods. But also, we had an eviction crisis in this country prior to the pandemic. We had disproportionate amounts of black families being evicted because of getting poor mortgages and being underemployed. So all of that is going to be exacerbated particularly for communities of color. And at the point that you then have upwards of, you have, 10, 20, 30 of folks being evicted out of these homes in the coming days, youre going to have a veritable social crisis. Where will they go, how were people going to quarantine, what are kids going to do in terms of having any kind of stability. Schools have been ended. Folks cant do any of the things they would have done this summer and now we are saying, we are blasting a significant swath of americans into housing insecurity. So the government has a responsibility to take care of its citizens. That means doing basic things like making sure the 600 stays every week. Making sure that not only people are not evicted but even small lapped lords, who own holes in communities, not being real estate folks, have support so they will be able to then allow folks to today in these homes that theyre renting. So we have to have a broader scale approach to this. I think nancy pelosi nailed it exactly right. We have one party, the power in the senate and the gop who tout belief in family values but does not think they have any structural responsibility to actually support american families. Thats where were going wrong. Were going to not only see death tolls rise but an increase in despair in this country, and that will have severe consequences for morale. Sore foam other things that make our country work well when it is working well. Jon meacham . When the Great Depression started, someone asked john maynard canes, has there ever been anything like the depression before. And emyes, it was called the dark ages and it lasted 400 years. And i think there is a similar sense, but slower moving sense of despair. And without the empathy that you all have spoken about, without a president , without a congress that actually believes and understands that there are people who need help, as you put it, through no fault of their own, then faith in theis, becom. And why would you believe, why would you offer your asent to a government, a culture, a society that seems to leave you on the street . Not seems. That might leave you on the street. Literally. Without some kind of empathetic and sensible reaction. Its not a case for huge government. This is in no way a new deal versus reagan revolution point. We have had a consensus in this country for a long time. It fell apart during the election of 2016. We may debate where on the spectrum we fall from roosevelt to reagan in the state of the marketplace. But we were on that continuum. We have fallen off that continuum. And part of the work of the moment is to get us back on it and part of the work of the election in 101, 102 days, is to see if we can permanently get back to a place where were having a permanent conversation about how best to pursue happiness. You both hatlaid out the big picture. They passed covid relief bills when it was a new problem and a potential short term emergency. Based on your knowledge of the virus, are we now looking at something that is a longterm problem . There isnt any doubt. The covid virus will be with us for months if not years. So we have to think about the new normal Going Forward for many months. We can perhaps influence this virus once we get Vaccines Available because then well have a greater sense of control. But at this time we have to recognize that this virus is out there and in addition to this hacking of empathy, which my colleagues have been discussing so he will quenly, we dont have a plan really to control this virus at the national level. It is so hetro genius across the country. People think the virus has been politicized, which of course, the virus has no political affiliation. It is happy to infect anyone. So we ned a plan to deal with the virus and we also need a plan to deal with the human beings who have been infected by the virus. Exactly. My final question goes to you, brittney, with about a minute left here. On a big topic though. What do people need to understand about what it means the eviction protections end tonight, in the middle of a time where the doctor obviously isnt taking a housing policy view but he is giving us a foundational situation which is the covid recession and the covid problem continues long past tonight. That means that tomorrow, people will be subject to just having their stuff tossed out on the streets. Literally being pushed into the streets with nowhere to go. And we havent built a social infrastructure to protect these people when they cant be in housing. And i am reminded by the specter of Hurricane Katrina when folks were displaced and had to be sheltered in the super dome in new orleans. Is that the strategy here . We are subjecting our citizens into a descent into chaos when we have the power to make a different set of decisions. We can choose to extend these eviction protections. We can choose to extend next week, peoples access to the extra money that they need to actually put food on the table, given the fact 52 Million People are dealing with unemployment in this country, which is utterly absurd. But part of the thing we need to remember is that President Trump has abdicated his responsibility to the american people. We are here because our leader abdicated his role to be a coordinating force to give us our marching orders and to send us on a path so we can combat this disease. So now, were going to then subject people again. Not only to the precariousness of coronavirus but also, when we are perfectly able, our leaders are to make different kinds of decisions. And if they choose not to protect our folks, then we need to remember that in november and we need to get rid of all of them. I appreciate the precision and moral clarity. My thanks. Jon, i have one more thing for you. You know, we have something very exciting coming up tonight. It could be said that you are, sir, straight out of monticello, if you know what i mean. I think i do. Yeah. And later tonight, we have someone straight out of compton. And we are going to have you two together so im thrilled you agreed to do that. A week that began with the Trump Administration seconding agents to clash with the civil rights protesters and escalated as this administration rolled out the official policy of more such deployments. Look at this. Now the week is ending with several setbacks to many of those actions. Today a judge blocking federal agents from some arrests of portland observers finding that news gathering, for example, is protected and citing another ruling that says open government is a hallmark of our democracy against what trump was trying to do. Also, the dojs own watch dog investigating how barr deployed those agents to portland as well as in d. C. And potential misuse of force. Take this together. The larger allegation here is something that should alarm conservative little bitter tareans and progressive civil rights activists alike. The allegation that your government would be abusing power to attack dissent or criticism. And that was another loss for trump ordering Michael Cohen released from Administration Cuts today. The judge finaling that barrs doj was jailing him to punish him for criticizing trump which of course violates our first amendment. So you take it all together when people ask, can this government get away with all this . This week the answer more than once is no. Were seeing some tactics halted. Many plots busted up and barrs deployments are you understand investigation. Even as the administration doubles down by trying to sends agents to new places including seattle. A liberal city that has been basically the host of several rights protests over several months now. Barr himself now touting the president s feds in ways deemed remarkably false by the washington post. And then this happened in a new interview, right here on msnbc. In a state which has welcomed some federal presence. Missouri, local officials there rebutting bill barrs newest claims. Take listen to the mayor of kansas city. So to hear the attorney general, the president basically say that your mayors arent there with you, that for some reason we want to see the number of murders on the streets, we want to see the murders of young black men in our country. I care about a lot more than bill barr does, it is frustrating, divisive and wholly unnecessary. So where the trump doj sees an alleged conflict between protests and good policing, hearing there from many mayors as well as some police on the ground that if you pursue fair reforms, the goal is to simply reduce killings. Its not a conflict. It is reducing killings, whether by civilians or police officers. Now, paul butler has lived these very issues as prosecutor, civil rights advocate, and at one time, a wrongfully accused defendant. He joins me when were back in just 30 seconds. Just 30 seconds. Joining me now is federal prosecutor paul butler. You have so much expertise here. These are swift rebukes to several attempts of abuse of power. Thats part of what the federal judge ruled here and why Michael Cohen is free tonight. What is important for all of us to understand and something that is still very much a hot unfolding story . So we have to be clear on where the authority is to send these federal agents to american cities. It is certainly the case that federal officers can protect federal land. Thats originally what they were doing in portland. Protecting the federal courthouse. But now we see mission creep. What we have, ari, is a situation in which President Trump and attorney general barr essentially believe they have their own private army of federal armed agents. And theyre sending them to cities with democrat mayors who they dont like. This is not going to end well. Are you concerned that this is a dry run for even more deployments heading into the election in. Im very concerned. Apparently so far, theyre not consequences. Under the law, this isnt what people understand, the people going to the cities being directed are not mill military officers or soldiers. Theyre this alphabet assume of federal agents. The fbi, the atf, customs, dea, the concern is these are not people trained under local Law Enforcement. They dont have the skills or the tools to enforce local law. And so what are they doing there . Its political. It has nothing to do with public safety. These mayors say, we dont need these officers by and large. If trump really wants to do something to keep people safe, to protect american lives, he needs to focus on the pandemic and let these mayors and governors protect their own cities. Now, paul, you worked in a high level u. S. Attorneys office, the u. S. Prosecutors. Theyve been you understand strain. I think people know, specifically under ag barr. I want to read from a statement that did come out so people can hear that side of the story. This is late breaking tonight. Friday night. Emlook, out there in seattle. A federal courthouse was broken into, a smoke bomb and an American Flag were burn. These actions were not peaceful protests that my office and the constitution works to protect. Lets not let the violence that has marred the Portland Protests damage peaceful movements here for a more just society. These federal agents will join our usual Law Enforcement staff to safeguard our federal buildings. The vast majority of the protesters have been peaceful. The movement for black lives is a movement about racial justice. It is not about violence or antagonizing people who dont deserve to be antagonized. And again, i think most federal officers understand this. When you sign up to work for the justice department, you sign up with the best of intentions. The concern is when you have a boss like bill barr. Hes out of control. Im one of the people who signed that ethics complaint. Members of the d. C. Bar think hes far exceeded his role under the constitution. Hes unfit to practice law. And one of the reasons i think he is unfit is the way hes authorizing what the Trump Administration is doing. Right. Paul . This is not an authoritarian government. You hated out clearly, i dont know if you know were excited about one of our guests joining us this hour, and youre too modest to do it. I wonder if i should recommend your book to ice cube since it is call the hip hop theory of justice. Tell him im straight out of south side of washington, d. C. And with him on your show, i think it will be a good day. I didnt even think that would you bring in the good day reference. Especially if you dont have to use your a. K. Good to see you, sir. Great to be here. Up ahead, lebron jails speaking out on the case weve been covering. The Breonna Taylor killing. What would happen if donald trump loses and doesnt accept the reporting in we have all kinds of measures. Kinds of measures. Hey hey man, youre here you dont trust me here in vegas, do you . So, switch to farmers and you could save an average of three hundred ninetyfive dollars. Get a quote today. We are farmers. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum donald trump under fire for his handling of covid, the economy and protests against back drop of an election just over 100 days away. The New York Times Michelle Goldberg has been covering all of it including a new essay that went viral warning about Donald Trumps goal, domestic occupation. On that point here was trump on hannity. Were going to all the cities, any of the cities, well put in 50,000, 60,000 people that really know what theyre doing and theyre strong, theyre tough, and we can solve these problems so fast. As you know, we have to be invited in. This fits into what youve been warning about. I give you the floor. To be honest, i felt like that was slightly less alarming from what weve been hearing from the administration because he at least acknowledged, like vampire, they do have to be invited in. They certainly werent invited into portland. What you see in other cities is them threatening to send federal agents in against the wishes of all of the local officials. As a start of occupying forceful if you saw this in another country, federal agents in camouflage, their identities covered, snatching people off the street without warrants, without probable cause in unmarked cars, you would know exactly what to call it and i think we should know what to call it here. I think a lot of people, michelle, we know each other since youre an expert on the program. Bu people have responded to the warnings youve issued because youre clear. Youre not yuf mizing any of this. Go ahead. Ive been extraordinarily alarmed from the moment donald trump became president. I think he was on an msnbc show the next day and had to have my makeup redone because i kept crying through my mascara. And even in my worst nightmares, even in the lowest moments, even when i was most terrified, i dont think i could have imagined pandemic, depression level under employment, america as a global that a rya being unable to go to foreign countries, public institutions, Public Schools shuttered and on top of that, these little green men in our advertise like some sort of Banana Republic grabbing leftists off the street. It is more disopen ttopian than biggest warning. You need to widen out enough to say the entire agenda is the interconnection saying, were in charge. Our friends are above the law and as you put it, i quoted it earlier this week, find out what happens to anyone who is, quote, below the law. It is one person who, to quote you, would be below the law because the president has what the New York Times called this darker messaging and combatting strategy in the election but is also literally having bill barr use the leverage of detention to silence people going into the november election. Well, look. Michael cohen is nobles here over. But they literally tried to make a political prisoner out of it. When they put someone in jail for writing a book. Just for twitter purposes, is it accurate to say, youre calling cohen Nelson Mandela . Is that the takeaway you want twitter to have . Thats what im saying. And i look forward to that quote going viral. Well, we had a soviet dissident once who told us in the darkest times he learned to laugh through the tears. So getting one laugh with you while there is a lot of serious stuff, we appreciate it. We look forward to having you back. I know youll stay on this story. Thank you. Some americans say theyre newly more aware of the depth of Police Brutality and systemic racism. Issues that black leaders and artists have highlighted for decades, as weve reported on the beat. Anyone willing to listen could learn about lynching. Heres Billy Holliday. Remember that in she was singing in strange fruit about lynching. Or you can learn about Police Brutality from tupac to krs 1 to ice cube. They confront Police Brutality and racism decades ago. The anthem, the police got americas attention at the time, some assumed it was demonizing just any police officer. But if you listen, ice cubes opening verse singles out Police Harassment of brown people. That album was a hit at the time going platinum. On the movie straight out of cumpton. Some of these have aged well. More americans more receptive to these points. So for the artist alive to see the change, do you ever wonder how they feel after living through years of attacks by everyone from critics to the fbi, even president s, only to now see more americans waking up to why there are such tensions with police. Well, we get to find out right now because ice cube is here of wna and several movies and a documentary and a clothing line and youre making waves right now watching a specific policy reform. A contract for black america. Ice cube, thank you for coming on the beat. Whats up, ari in how are you doing in. Im okayful i have a lot to get to. Youre pushing this policy contract. Its big. Not just about police. Why . Well, i think we need a broad change. You know in getting these little changes of police reform, which is good, you have abuses in the judicial system. You have abuses in the prison system so you have to change them across the board if you can. Have a broad thing. Not just Little Things that will make racism pop out in other ways. Destroying to almost it, get the best minds and people who really do this. Im not a legislator. People who really do this. Youre not a legislator but at love people have been ahead of this. Whether it is with the police or your document goes into recommend ragss, economics, the presentation of black people in our world. News media over here or entertainment media. I want to get into more of it. This is the news and everybody gets the questions. I wanted to give you a chance. Well show one of the headlines that was reporting that youve sharing theories, one that went up that people did take that way. I want to give you the chance to address that. What do you say to people that think, while youre calling for civil rights that allegedly, you are also sharing this kind of material. Well, you know, i looked at that picture. The picture pains me as much as it pains the jewish community. Ive seen real pictures of people used as savagery. I have an people being used as furniture. I can kind of make it out. And you know, i have another one, you know, these images here are the images that haunt me at night. So i know it is painful to other people for other reasons. I didnt know the history when i put it up. I just saw the people at the bottom. I know it is supposed to be a caricature of other communities but to my eyes, i see a bunch of rich guys sitting around the table and the table is made of black people. I posted the images. I was going to ask you, to be clear, this is swirling raupds this. You dont look at it as you intended to Say Something about a particular religion. Ill count myself. Im an ice cube fan. Wait, is he trying to Say Something about jews, your response is what . Not at all this is a rich power structure and poor people at the bottom. If i would have drawn it, there are people all over the korld, when i saw the picture in the images, okay, these are supposed to be jewish men sitting around the table. That never occurred to me. What occurred to me was that it was men pretty much a rich poor thing. So i understand people are very, you know, i guess emotional about art. And i would say art is in the eye of the beholder. And two people can look at the same picture and get two Different Things out of it. And i hope people understand. I believe, ari, just to let me finish, that im getting caught in the wake of other celebrities. And if you just look at me as an individual, you will see that im far from antisemitic. Right. I wanted to let you address that. On the policing matter. Wove been reporting on this for some time on the beat. As you know, in some ways, there is progress and in some ways, people want officers to stop killing innocent people, are demonizing the police. Were reporting on the evidence. No, they just want the killings to stop. And you had the message, people thought that was antithe idea of there being police or firefighters. But there is a lot of evidence, no, it was about racism. Lets look back at what up. What do you say now whether to attorney general barr or your critics about a song that was ahead of americas awareness of this alleged profile. Yeah. As an artist, weve always tried to warn people about what was going on through music. A lot of people called the music violence. But the music was really understanding. We were trying to help america understand how we were filling in the community. That we could take it no longer. And progress was made. Before the song, police could do no wrong. After that song, you have, now police are on trial, being questioned. Now people are understanding, weve got to look at this from both ways. And you cant just demonize a community for trying to fight back from excessive force. I also released a song called good cop, bad cop, which was a song that was really protesting and really begging good cops to stand up for the community, and stand up for the people in community, and get some of these bad apples. So these things, people taking the songs. Then you have a real explosion that were trying to prevent. Yeah. I really appreciate that. That goes full circle from what they were trying to tell us about what was happening in the community to the responsibility to what youre doing today, getting into the policy. As i think you know we really like to get everybody to the table for bigger conversations. We learn more when we listen to more people. So im thrilled as you stick around and bring in one of our experts. Jon meacham, the author of songs of america, to quote ice cube. Whats up, john . He was in that book. Just to be clear, so there is not any problem. As you all talk, my minds went back to marian anderson. 1939. She sang in front of the lincoln memorial. Eleanor roosevelt resigned from the daughters of the American Revolution because the daughters of the American Revolution refused to let playmarian ander sing at Constitution Hall near the white house. And the image of this africanamerican woman, this amazing singer, world renowned, was one of the first popular imagings in the 20th century of the kinds of desegregation, the kind of journey that dr. King would be so much a part of in 1963 when marian tried to sing there. And also, the person, the morning after she heard about the bombing of 16 street baptist church. And you have this, and Billy Holliday and strange fruit. Just music has fundamentally both reflected who we want to be, but also, it has shaped who we want to be. The idea that art isnt political is crazy. I love the examples you give. The intersection. Well play this for ice cube. His response and then your historic perspective. Weve covered a lot of how the establishment, which some people would call white america, was really united and bipartisan in its response. Where it was to nwa or a lot of other artists. So we have this together. Take a is politicians respondin to a range of rap music, including that that was critical of the police. Take a look. A line has been crossed, not just of taste but of Human Dignity and decency. The kind of hatred that you do not honor today. Songs about killing policemen and rejecting law. If you took the words white and black and reversed them, you might think david duke was giving that speech. The last line an attack on Sister Soldier who had criticized Police Brutality. As i often say, ice cube, its not to endorse everything and every song or every political platform. Im curious now today what you think looking back at that . Well, you know, its to be expected, you know, from people who want to keep the status quo to not, you know, want to hear music that pushes the envelope. You know, sometimes rap music what i love about rap music is, you know, it does deal with the good, the bad and the ugly of our society and so to me it was you know, they were doing what they supposed to do. Musicians and artists, we doing what we supposed to do too which is to take the temperature of the country and hopefully help us understand each other better and hopefully well see a better future. But thank god for the artists who have the courage to speak truth to power or just tell it like it is. Jon . Well, you know, one of dr. Kings favorite quotations was adopted from Theodore Parker who was an abolitionist minister in the 1960s. Dr. King formulated it as the arc of a moral universe is long but it bends towards justice. And a lot of folks who look like me have used that as a kind of comforting easy listening argument that, you know what, if we just go along, itll all kind of work out in the end. If you look like me, things have always worked out. Right . I mean, im a southern white meat episcopalian. I havent had a great deal of strife in my life, but one of the things that history tells us, the history thats unfolding today, im not talking about frock coats and powdered whigs, but the history of black lives matter, the history john lewis represented as he begins his final journey home is that that line, that arc will not bend unless there are people who insist that it swerve. And artists are in a particularly strong position culturally to insist that it swerve. And then we can we work it out. Thats what a republic is. Thats what free government is. But i think to expect one person, one entity to have all of the answers and a solution on how to get there legislatively and fix it all up by tuesday is is unreasonable. This is a dialectic. Its a conversation. Yup. Its i would say its a symphony, but there has to be a lot of cacophony too. Hold on, jon. Is it a symphony though or is it the endless american remix . Well, im going to defer to you and mr. Cube on mr. Cube, were over on time. I give mr. Cube the last word. I think of a remix because i think hiphop, like jazz, samples everything that comes before it but still takes us forward. Aint nothing wrong with taking whats good and making it new and i think thats what we need to do with america. You know, most artists, real quick, you know, they want harmony no matter how hard core they are. They will love harmony. Lets take whats good in america, lets remix it and lets come out with something better. Well, if jon meacham is the new feature on ice cube remix, im here for it. Thank you both for the discussion. I hope you both come back. Well be right back. This country was not built on whitecollar, it was built on bluecollar, hard work. Hard work means every day. Getting it right.
