This campaign will send donald trump packing. And i will not be our partys nominee. But i will not walk away from the most important political fight of my life. Ive known joe for a very long time. I know his decency, honesty and his commitment to the issues so important to our country and im glad to say i endorse joe biden. Big news there. Now, here on the beat. Kwaelg weve been tracking the delegates from the start. As you have seen, joe biden arguing those pundits were wrong again. As weve done after every race here, we have the numbers for you. These are the only numbers that matter. Biden takes the lead with 52 delegates ahead of Bernie Sanders and the counting too, be clear, continues right here in california where 177 delegates will be awarded last night. Please note joe bidens lead is outside super tuesday. This could remain a tight delegate race, which is to take nothing away from the comeback. One expert saying theyve never seen anybody mount a comeback like this ever. Elizabeth warren is not on pace anymore to win an outright majority and she came in third in her home state of massachusetts last night. Biden wrapping up delegates in traditionally red states like texas, alabama. The surge juicing his fundraising and he was so outspent. We have new reporting tonight showing bloomberg spent 24 times what biden did per vote. More on that later. All of this powering the biden campaigns argument he has the political standing that money cant buy. And from the gas to the debates and that may play a role in the twoperson race ahead. Biden not only won big, he won in a way that revives his standing and a campaign that sometimes lacks for a crisp narrative, they have one. Joe biden casting himself as, yes, a survivor and he will continue to be, he argus, a fighter and keep on fighting whether people count him out or not. Its an iconic theme from greek mythology to beyonce. And last night, he was on his beyonce vibes from how people treat him, to his own inner power. Thought i would fail without you, but im on top. Thought it would be over by now, but it wont stop. Just a few days ago the press and the pundits declared the campaign dead. So, im here to report we are very much alive. Reporter and i turn to our panel tonight. The democrat from california whos back out in washington. He endorsed joe biden. Editor and chief from cafe. Com and he was an aid to Hillary Clinton and barack obama. And Melanie Mason a reporter for the l. A. Times. Congressman, did you see the survivor narrative last night . And what does it mean about joe biden Going Forward . What it means about joe biden is he always had the right stuff, just not the right amount of resources and Bernie Sanders was out spending him, in some states, three to one and four to one. Its a much more even set race when it comes to getting messaging out and people are going to realize and recognize joe biden unifies people, talks about what hes going to do and can look back and say weve done it together. Do you see this as something that was basically inevitable because you believe in joe biden and he was going to come back strong in super tuesday . Or if youre going to keep it real with us and you were talking about your love for california. Would you acknowledge that this was also partly thanks to the rallying around him . That he wouldnt be around if not for the endorsements and consolidation of the party. Joe biden is a unifier. Hes about the 328 Million People in america. Making sure people understand ive been a lifelong public servient, giving of myself and doing it wantonly and in a way he shows he cares. So, thats the point. Joe biden was never alone and joe biden isnt alone and joe biden is getting more support now and when it comes to resources and youre going to see joe biden throughout toe to toe with whoevers left. Rights now it looks like him and Bernie Sanders and i think were going to see a wonderful culmination before the big july event. Im hearing a lot of optimism from you as a biden backer. Stay with me. I want to bring in some of our guests, as mentioned here, in the california super tuesday environment. Blake, youve worked these kind of primaries. The hillary, obama primary had its debates. The big question, what happened last night . Well, clearly joe biden has had four of the most amazing days in political history. I know you want to get the congressman to keep it real. Ill be real with you. A couple weeks ago people were like joe biden may not be a survivor. But hes had an amazing four days and he changed the race and clearly the frontrunner. I think big thing looking forward is age. Weve sliced and diced it in many ways ppt Bernie Sanders does very well with folks under 45. Joe biden, the reverse. If bourn burn wants to get back in, hes going to have to extend his coalition so he is now doing better with older than 45yearold voters or get those younger voters, under 45 voters to come out in greater numbers than they have so far. Take a listen to how Bernie Sanders was putting it today. Joe biden is somebody ive known for many years. I like joe. I think hes a very decent human being and i dont want this to degenerate into a trumptype effort where its personal attacks. That is the last thing this country wants. Joe has his ideas, his record, his vision for the future. I have mine and i look forward to a serious debate. Melanie, i think that sound bite to you and take us forward as a reporter. Sanders is promising a races now that looks like two people as delegate frontrunners without vit reall. He certainly made it clear, particularly to his supporters this isnt nasty or below the belt. When hes going to be talking about Vice President bidens vote in 2003 around iraq, for example, or his support for trade deals, especially in key states like michigan coming up, this is a hard fought race about policy and records and that has the potential to get nasty. But do you think the democrats will basically tune in and say here we go. Were having a finalist. Its easy to follow two things than ten . Or because of the nature of the antitrump resistance, theres a desire to move on . I think what they want is clarity. We saw late deciding voters breaking so decisively because there was a sense of coalescing in the moderate lane. I think voters were quite frankly dieing for clarity when it how many candidates to choose from. Youre right. The soe the sense of the most important thing is to beat trump. Theyre not wanting a chippy primary fight. So, i think were going to see calls to wrap it up if it starts. What sanders has at times done well is go on the ground, do grass roots campaigning and get people excited. Look at the states last night that joe biden didnt visit and won. What does that tell you . One of the key things that happened in this race last night, super tuesday, throughout the country is the differences between democrats and republicans. Democratic voters tend to listen to their leaders. They lake to be told what to do by their party. They came together and said joe biden is our guy. Donald trump, the Establishment Republicans freaked out and said get behind jeb bush or someone else. The democratic establishment has been shopping for an alternative to Bernie Sanders. They finally settled on their one person and some number of voters did listen to them. And basically said if what youre looking for is unity, i guess we reviewed other people. Theyre not only out, theyre backing him. Thats a point you were making as well. With all the excitement, i want to press you. We do it substantively. I want to play something weve heard from your fellow demagogues, which is, okay. They like joe biden but how will he do against donald trump who is, according to democrats weve heard from, an impeachably unfair and nasty brawl, which is part of why your party impeached him for trying to cheat against joe biden . And yet theyre worried about whether hes going to be strong in the debatsz. Look at how hes stumbled at times. The only africanamerican woman ever elected to the senate. A whole range of people. Thats not true. Play the radio. Make sure the excuse me. Make sure you have the record player on at night. Make sure kids hear words. My times up. Im sorry. Your response . Well, ive had the opportunity to get a front row seat to meet many of the candidates that have been on the stage including joe biden, Bernie Sanders and the bottom line is this. Joe biden is about other people. When you get the chance to talk to joe biden like i have, he allows you to talk. He wants to hear about you, what your concerned about, what you care about, etc. When it comes to Bernie Sanders, with all due respect, hes the opposite. Ive had the opportunity to be around Bernie Sanders and he usually does most of the talking. Ive had a frontrow seat to meet many of the folks. And the bottom line is what youre going to see down the stretch is him doing very well and a lot more closer and personal about what youre going to get from each personality and the promises and commitments theyre making and whether or not they can complete those promises. And we appreciate you being fiery and what is going to be this twoperson race. As you know, wed like you to rejoin me later in the hour where were going to have a substantive, but the big debate. Look forward to having you back, sir. Ill see you in a few minutes. Democratic voters increasingly turning out for joe biden. Look at this dynamic. Many still backing Bernie Sanders health care policies. Take the key issue of potentially replacing most private insurance with medicare for all. This is not just last night but all votes to date in the democratic primary, half or more saying they actually back medicare for all. Blake, its quite a map. This is something we saw you tweeting about saying, yes, life is complicated and people may still want, shall we say a more population agenda than joe biden has backed and theyre leaning towards biden. 18 states have voted so far. 16 had entrance and exit polls and were asked would you replace the private Health Insurance system with a singlepayer system . And in every single state among democratic voters they chose a single payer. This is alabama, tennessee and northern ones. To your point oaboabout going te biden, often they dont vote on policy. Sometimes its temperament, the person theyve known or other things. And thats clearly evident by this trend. Melanie, where do you see this going . And joe biden may be still arguing this is his final shot. And you can keep moving left and that going to the political question a lot of people have their eye on, which is who does joe biden go to for his running mate . The Hillary Clinton model, find someone you would barely notice. I mean, hes not senator warren. Hes not an aoc. Do you see what blake is saying and do you think that goes to whoever the nominee is . First of all whoever biden was going to pick was important for one factor only and thats his age. I think the reason he got to the white house the first time around is you had a nominee in obama that had to supplement his ticket with experience. And now you need biden to deal with peoples concerns about his age. And so, youre going to need someone who seems fresh and young and qualified if need be. In terms of activating the more liberal side of the party. Theres a reason why Bernie Sanders called for an hourlong debate on medicare for all. I think all of us who watched so far thought really . We need do this more . Id like the to be three hours, not one. Look, health care is hard to di distil in 20 second answers. I was being dry. I think sanders sees an ideological possibility and look, people are not happy with the Current Health care system. When people are weighing all of their options at the polls, is it policy or is it this potential to beat trump a sense of tone and tenor and i think thats where biden has an advantage. As a reminder voters can say more than one thing. They can tell us who theyre about to support and they may also be telling us other things about the country they want to live in. Thats, i think one of the best and optimistic parts of all this. Your first time on the beat. Appreciate you joining us on the ground in california. Blake, i think were going to bring you back on the money trail and why Mike Bloomberg face planted. And Bernie Sanders digging into what they call a twoperson race and disappointing results. We have a sanders supporter very prominent. Our special report as mentioned on the money. Port as mentioned on the money i like liberty mutual. Get e trades simplified technical analysis. Life comes at you fast, so do campaigns. This race just turned more in three days than in months. Joe biden was limping out of New Hampshire in fifth place. And then, boom, roaring back on super tuesday, taking the lead for the first time. A shift that surprised many, including the Sanders Campaign which was, quote, caught off guard by the comeback. Not only winning and that is a setback. Today Bernie Sanders stressing the issues he believes separate him and the new delegate leader. Joe and i have a very different vision for the future of this country. Joe is running a campaign which is obviously heavily supported by the corporate establishment. Now, you know we call it stray here. Joe bidens embraced by some backers, some donors and yes, Mike Bloomberg can reflect partly, business interests. But nobody can factualy dismiss all the rank and file voters going towards biden. And its all the more striking given this partedys very public search, at times, to consider someone other than biden. Weve just been discussing this. And they are known and discussed by democratic voters from struggling in some of the debates to making unforced errors and at times rambling speeches and rallies that they worried were lackalist lugser and in the race for majority of delegates, bidens comeback has turned this into a twoperson contest. Thats a huge historic surge for joe biden. Just as it was an exaggeration to count joe biden out after New Hampshire t would be the time same to declare him the nominee when his delegate edge is just 3 over sanders. What happens when we cover it factualy and not with predictions and how does Bernie Sanders argue he should leave a parte party hes long criticized. And were back in 30 seconds. Anwed re back in 30 seconds thed to even more real people than me jd power. 448,134 to be exact. They answered 410 questions in 8 categories about vehicle quality. And when they were done, chevy earned more j. D. Power quality awards across cars, trucks and suvs than any other brand over the last four years. So on behalf of chevrolet, i want to say thank you, real people. Youre welcome. Were gonna need a bigger room. Were back with this factchanging contest and were back with a Bernie Sanders supporter from minnesota. Thank you for having me. Well do policy and politics. But im starting with the politics. As a sanders supporter, what do you think voters were saying last night including minnesota . As you know the 48 hours that preceded super tuesday the air waves were blanketed with messages that said biden was going to win, that the party was coalescing its power and infloouns around him. So t makes sense voters went to the voting booth thinking that they had to make a choice about who was going to be able to be a representative of the voices that they werent getting in the ballot box. What we do know is that every single exit poll showed that the voters actually cared about many of the policies that senator Bernie Sanders is campaigning on. And that is the message that has resonated with them. And when we do have the opportunity to get people to coaless around our Progressive Movement and unite, we will have the opportunity for senator Bernie Sanders to be the nominee for the Democratic Party. So, you lets discuss that. We were reporting earlier this hour, for example, about how many democratic voters support medicare for all. Obviously sanders gets credit for driving the conversation and that wasnt the case ten years ago for example. But, as a sanders supporter, im curious what you say. Is it potentially a negative sign for sanders if people are supporting his policies or dont seem worried for him and they worry whether or not he is the best person to defeat President Trump . We know how fear sometimes can drive the decisions of voters. Weve seen that in the last president ial election and then we see people have remorse about the decisions they made. We are now going to have a twoperson race and year going to give the voters an opportunity realize this is the president ial candidate we need. This is who is going to bring the kind of transformative changes were after and how we get to having a candidate excited about creating a better tomorrow for all of us and getting medicare for all to become the law of the land and fighting for student debt cancellation, in making sure we are leading the effort in prootecting our environment. If senator sanders does better with young people and worse with older voters, how do you change that . Its all about perception and i think when theres a lot of time and energy spent on making people focussed on what has been and picking the safer candidate, people make the different choice and i think we will have the opportunity to have a conversation about what it means for us, not just to be aspirational but to show them how we can make that be an ackwhl, workable policy that will transform their lives. You mentioned what voters were seeing heading to tuesday and it was really something, the unity around biden. He gets more yeah, i spoke to that at the rally in minnesota when i spoke. People were literally gathering to put a damper on the movement that senator Bernie Sanders was building. In minnesota, in a state that had when we had the caucuses exclusively focussed on building coalitions around the policies that we all cared about, senator Bernie Sanders won it handily and now that we had a primary and an opportunity for us to organize, my district was the only Congressional District the senator wan. And if you look at our state f there was a united force around progressive values, senator Bernie Sanders would have won the state of minnesota and would have carried manyuct states. So, when we think about the particular policies that the senator cares about, when we think about the movement he has created and energized, the senator wins and when we think about the kind of america everybodys excited about, the senator wins. We are about to be joined by one of your democratic colleagues in the house who is backing joe biden, not sanders like yourself. I want to give you one more question on that. Fair is fair. What, in your view, is the biggest reason that voters in these upcoming states should not vote for joe biden . What is your reservation about him . Do you have a reservation people need to consider in your mind about biden . So, i dont often like to speak ill of any democrat because i think were all a family. Were all, afterall going to make sure were united in our effort to defeat trump. But i think it is really important for us to think about who is in a position to lead our country to that better tomorrow. Vice President Biden has had some votes that he has taken that certainly are not a rchtive of where many of us are at in regards to policy. And many of us are still struggling and feeling the hurt of many of the policies that he has proposed to have voted for and implemented. Its really important when were creating an opportunity for people to choose a president who is going to alleviate the kind of anxieties and hurt that Many Americans are feeling, we dont pick a candidate that can be an example of that. We need pick a candidate that will help people see that there is an option for a better tomorrow. Congresswoman omar, as always thanks for coming on the beat. Thank you so much for having me. Appreciate it. And back with me a backer of joe biden for the other side. Your response. Well, ari, i think that was a nice dialogue that reminds everybody, like she said, were not here to fight with each other. Were just here to make sure people understand what our positions are. In this case the main candidates here. What i like the say is when people fake about so Many Americans are for mode care for all. Americans Want Health Care for everybody and thats what joe he was part of an administration and in charge of whipping votes to make sure the most comprehensive Health Care Policy got passed in waugsz. Its called the Affordable Care act and went from 20 of americans down to less than 10 . That is the biggest increase ever in the histraphy of the United States. Millions and millions now have access to health care. Can we improve it . Yes. And thats what biden is talking about. Hes talking about making it accessible to everybody. The congresswoman, very diplomatically and substantively raised the votes that have dragged biden down among some democrats, particularly Young Democrats to the two that come to mind would be supporting the iraq war and the crime bill. I think broadly i should say, alluding to that. Whats your response and do you think it matters or has joe biden addressed that enough . Sometimes you take tough votes and maybe you wont do that again. I think joe biden is the kind of person to take responsibility and conflunts fact that maybe he would do it different lae now, etc. Youd have to ask him specifically on that. At the same time joe biden works on getting things done. He actually works on assprational things that can be achieved and has a track record of doing that. Thank you for being in the show more than once and again, congratulations to you and your candidate. Just a few days ago the press and the pundits declared a campaign dead. So, im here to report we are very much alive. And today i am leaving the race for the same reason, to defeat donald trump and im glad to say i endorse joe biden and i hope you will join me in working to make him the next president of the United States of america. A singing loss for bloomberg who spent 4 400 million plus, dwarfing what everyone else spent. It didnt save bloomberg when it came time for voters to decide. Bloomberg came in with a bold strategy of completely ignoring the first four primaries and betting his entire campaign on making a big splash super tuesday and hes been spending money harder than a dad add Chuck E Cheese trying to keep custody of his kids. Mike bloomberg, fair to say not having the night he paid for. He basically spent the cost of an avatar movie. We were reporting about this data and now we have an update for you. This is brand new and provides evidence that the spending has a limit, especially depending on who we are. Bloomberg wassent on the ballo in the first four. Now you can see the tally. Bloombergs votes with the map. Bloomberg spent roughly 240 per vote. And look at sanders and biden. This is a actually impressive when you look at the race. 30 and 10 per vote. Let me tell you why this matters before i show you more of the charts. This is a test of one of the biggest questions and debates in this entire race right now and doesnt matter whether you prefer biden or sanders or warren or somebody else. Theres a question about what happens when billionaires get involved, particularly when they self fund. And i can tell you for the first time and i couldnt weeks ago, the evidence shows a real ceiling, particularly on billionaire whose try to enter if they dont have real popularity with voters. Here are the front runners. Bloombergs spending eight times what sanders spent per vote. Thats after the super tuesday races he was banking on. Sanders with 2 sanders no longer has a delegate lead. So, look at the numbers. Could be astonishing. Bloomberg spending 24 times what biden spend every 23rd vote. And now that is the best return on investment of any candidate in the whole race, self funded or not. And this is interesting. He has now spent triple what biden did and came out, as of right now with fewer delegates. These numbers go in all sorts of directions. If you were in the joe biden camp, these numbers that are new tonight, provided additional argument for his path ahead, that we can do more with less, pushing out Bernie Sanders and the delegate lead while sanders outspends joe biden three to 1. I want to get into this with the New York Times columnist, Michelle Bloomberg and clinton, whos actually done writing about Mike Bloombergs fund raising and spending. Thats a lot to digest. I slowed it down because i wanted to make sure everyone understands. Mine is theres a limit to what peoples spending can do, especially if theyre unpopular with the voting group theyre appealing to and that theres good news potentially for joe biden. My analysis is money can buy your way in the door and contention. Its the reason why, when theres a freak oout, the attention went to bloomberg or booker or hairess. But it cant buy you charisma. It cant buy you a record that comports with the values of the Democratic Party elelkterate. So, i dont think this proves by any means that plu talkeracy is not a problem in our politics. Just that there are still things in the flawed democracy not for sale. So, to use your word, you think a slightly more charismatic billionaire with bloombergs money, the money might have made the difference . I think you saw a few weeks ago a lot of panic about joe bidens viability and his ability to hold his own against donald trump and they look to Mike Bloomberg. The reason that Mike Bloomberg was on the stage, the reason Mike Bloomberg had this notework and was able to stand up a campaign so quickly was because of all the money. Its just that this money wasnt enough to save him from being fileted by Elizabeth Warren and wasnt enough to hide the fact that he had a record an athima to much of the democratic elelkterate. And Elizabeth Warren was clear and factual in confronting him. Which is any candidates right. People argue when do you get out . Go ahead. My husband, full disclosure, my husband is consulting for Elizabeth Warren. Im not sure how long i have to make that full disclosure on air but i need say that. And warren clearly using her power and platform to make that point. Blake, this may raise the question, how could you possibly do any worse than Mike Bloomberg and the answer is tom steyer. And take a look at this. 10 per vote for biden shows his surge and esufficiency. Bloomberg is a very expensive some would say humiliating way too, spend your money. I see thescience experiment. If you take the candidate ill fitted and doesnt have that much charisma. Hes not a joke but does not fit in and take Unlimited Money and a smart team, can you make the work . And clearly the answer in this case was no. Sounds like youre trying to say stop trying to make mike happen. Or fetch. But the question you raised before is the really interesting one we could say it doesnt matter if you have that much money because it didnt work and steyer it didnt work. What if you took someone who was a good fit for the democratic primary and on reasonably equal footing and they had a huge monetary advantage and they could spend endlessly, then what happens . I suspect the money would go a lot further in that instance. You were on with chris hayes and myself discussing the bloomberg race while it was still launching. We heard from democrats and said im still eyeing bloomberg. And we heard that from people. The money was the reinforcement. Given your scrutiny of bloomberg, i want to play this potentially revealing moment in the debate whicha almost referrd to buying college seats. 21 of those with people i spent 100 million to help elect. All of the new democrats that came in and put nancy pelosi in charge and gave the congress the ability to control this president , i got them. Close call. Close call. We bought things illegal to buy. So, does this in any way, in your view, make other billionaires think twice or its not the nature of them . Both you and michelle are making a nuanced point we want to hit here. If democracy is for seal, if the party we talked a lot about republicans and i reported on how the dnc changed rules, politically that may have been the strategy you wanted. From the democracy view t still seems like theres a potential threat of the parties bending to any billionaire who says i have the money. Its almost an intimidation way to get on the stage. When you show the amazing charts, one thing not in there is the amount of time he spent the money in. The other candidates were spending that money in two years. In three muqts he was able to get on the debate stage and have aufl offices around the country, taken seriously. That was barrier to entry was completely knocked down. It actually got him plenty. It got him a fighting chance. And in fairness to Mike Bloomberg, there are states that will show virginia where the rate was not as dramatic. It was an par with other traditional democrats. I want to mention that for fairness and give michelle the final word. Again, i think to me the really disturbing thing is not so much who is on the stage at some of the later debates but who wasnt on the stage at the la later debates. I think there would have been a role for Kamala Harris and cory booker when panic set in about joe biden and the only reason they werent there was because they couldnt raise money and theres an opportunity cost, right . Candidates spend a huge amount of their time raising money and sucking up to donors. And its something that the bloombergs and steyers of the world are spared. Although its kind of a happy ending Michael Bloomberg was not able to perurchase the nomation for himself, i dont think we should by complacent about the distorting role it plays in our process. And nuanced thoughts from people who know a lot about these issues. And when we come back, what voters are telling us and what it could mean for turnout in the general election. Could mean foe general election the invitation to lexus sales event now through march 31st. Lease the 2020 es350 for 379 a month for 36 months and well make your first months payment.
