About one person writing a check the wit has been directed not to another person and wiping our to answer the questions. Hands of that collective responsibility we have to make almost every question she is our nation more just and fair. Refusing to answer. Even as something as six as writing a check reference is where is your office located. To how senator sanders recently objection. Its ridiculous. Described its striking to hear you lay it im joined by nyu law out like that as you mentioned professor Melissa Murray and particularly some of the disturbing statistics and to a. J. Dion, columnist for the watch u. S. Government hearing washington post. Ej, as a student of washington today discuss reparations with you and these other witnesses. Known for some theater, what was accomplished today . Well, not a whole lot. That itself is somewhat ground on the one hand, they did get a breaking. As you know, the senate is in witness, but what you really saw this fight over 9 11 funding. Was the length to which the i wanted to give you a chance to Trump Administration is willing respond to what senator mitch to go to block any testimony mcconnell just said in response before congress. To june stewart. Weve never failed to address theyll make up any reason to this issue. And we will address this again. Say that somebody shouldnt i dont know why hes all bent testify. They might as well say theyre out of shape but we will take exerting a privilege privilege which is they will have the care of the 9 11 victims privilege to say that somebody compensation fund. Members have a lot of things cant say anything whenever they feel like it. Going on at the same time, and ej . It sounds to me like hes is it its like stacks on looking for some way to take stacks . Its privilege on privilege . Offense. Theres no way we wont address that sounds right. There is problem appropriately. And i think this is a really off we have in the past and we will again. Your view . Precedent. You cannot imagine when theres that if you were one of those a democratic president again families, that is struggling right now, where you had a some day, republicans ever, ever Family Member hob did something accepting Something Like this, heroic as an one of those guys and obviously, this is getting that lived just miles away from in the way of the strategy that 9 11 that knows folks that were the nancy pelosi has in mind. She and at the moment a majority in those buildings, that knows of house members dont want to some of the heroes that stormed move quickly to impeachment. Into those buildings and were theyd like public hearings. There to protect america to this was a closed hearing. Defend this country to save and they like people to come to lives, there must be a sense of testify. And the harder the trump urgency to say to this Nation Administration makes it for people to testify, it the more when you are a hero, we have your back. It will ratchet up pressure to and so to act in a blase an move to an impeachment inquiry fashion that this should be which at the moment the house normal functionings of doesnt want. Let me ask one more thing washington and not see that this about that before i turn to the is making a statement to all of professor here. I wonder if what were seeing america about what happens in today is potentially politically times of National Crisis when positive for the republican wes are attacked and whether he white house in the short run and those people stand up, we should substantively negative for all make a clarian statement right now that we got your back. Of america because you could argue that what you just saw was Mitch Mcconnell should step up in their political interests that their side says great. And show the same level of commitment to our heroes that hope hicks is defying almost a they deserve and whats little bit of like trolling. Happening now is just shameful, and the dems are waiting around and complaining. Shameful the way that were slow thats maybe a little benefit in walking this or not dealing with the short run but in the long it when we know we put that on run as you just said, what is the floor of the senate, it would get probably 100 votes if going to happen if the basic system for hundreds of years has not something close to that abthose families would have the worked partly yes by legal enforcement and tradition, where resources and the security they deserve. They earned it in an act of national, in, a time of national there is good faith oversight and testimony by the executive branch if that is blown up over disaster. Very well put. A thing which donald trump claims hes not afraid of which such a big issue, one weve all is oversight and impeachment. Been watching kind of one of it is sort of beneficial to them. Those times where a lot of i do wonder for people in the people are wondering whats middle watching all of this taking so long. A First Responder this week said saying gee, why dont they let Mitch Mcconnell is making it anyone testify. But you put your finger on it take a long time. When you used the word that was his view. Before i let you go, i want to tradition. By the way, on privilege, its one thing if youre president and im giving you advice on a war and we kick that around. Some of that is legitimately privilege. You want honest vice. Take a look at this controversial video of Phoenix Police using an aggressive tactics on a family with small children who posed no an apparent physical threat. The officers drawing their guns and telling the parents they were going to get shot. The interaction began after a daughter walked out of the store with a doll. The footage sparked protests a lawsuit by the family and an investigation with the Phoenix Police chief conceding what youre about to see in this program is disturbing. I want to play this tape for about a minute so you can see the context of this escalating interaction. Youre going to [ bleep ]. Get your [ bleep ] hands off me. Im holding my hands up. These are not isolated incidents. They just tend to get more political. Media reaction when they happen to be videotaped. Consider other events. An offduty officer shot and killed and you armed man with disabilities at a costco last week in california, the same week that Indiana Police shot and killed an africanamerican man. There was a dispute whether or not he had a knife. Officers in that indiana town wear body cameras but they say the camera wasnt recording during that incident so we dont have the video of it. The wider numbers show Excessive Force is not evenly distributed in america where likely to be used against the poor, minorities and mentally challenges. All of this is rooted in a deeper debate about americas Justice System. Is it working just fine the way it is or does it need reformle . Professor Michael Eric Dyson will give me his answer in this segment. I want to know how this adds up because the videos and activism and pressure, there are signs its working. Many big cities ousted das and mayors over these issues. Donald trump has concluded enough americans think the criminal Justice System is is so flawed hes trying to position himself for being bipartisan reform. He hosted reformers and Kim Kardashian a few days before launching his reelection campaign. My whole journey with criminal Justice Reform started about a year ago when i came to see the president. After speaking to ivanka and jared who really fought for me to get here. Everyone wants the community to be safe and the more opportunity we have and that they have and the support that we help give them, the safer everyone will be. I signed into law Ground Breaking historic reform to our criminal Justice System. The first step act. We had tremendous conservative support. And tremendous liberal support. It was very bipartisan. Very bipartisan. The law hes referring to takes people at the ends of the road of our system after arrest, detention, trial, incarceration and shortens some of their sentences for nonviolent offenses. What about fixes at the beginning of the road . People forced into it through Excessive Force where the police may be committing a crime. What about starting at the root of a system that forces more people, poor people, black people, brown people, into prison than any other democracy in the world . Im joined by Georgetown Professor Michael Eric Dyson. I pose that question to you. Youre right as usual. This is a problem of the root. This is a problem of the deeply entrenched and persistent bias in america and the extraordinary support for a system of criminal injustice to disproportionately poor, brown and africanAmerican People. To talk about this at the end of the process where people have rotted in jail or spent a long time there and therefore, get out a bit earlier doesnt speak to the fact what we saw on that tape is remarkably distressing. It is a distraught family being besieged by people low are ostensibly are there to protect and be. What protection was there . What service was there . This is a family whose fouryear old daughter happened to pinch a doll or some such and then at 4 years old, she las nos moral compass no, consciousness. She didnt know that she was stealing a doll so to subject her to the vicious practices of Law Enforcement at that level was itself distressing enough. But you and i love shawn carter. And we know that jayz said bin laden been happening in manhattan. Back then, back when the police was al qaeda to black men. Right . So we understand that people thought thats hyperbolic, that is exaggerating. This is terror in america, my friend. For africanamerican, latino and the mentally challenged. You say that and that line applies and you say the terror there. We quoted some of the parents talking about that same word, sir. Terror. Absolutely. And well put up on the screen again some of the video. What is important to you that people know . If people watching this at home say well, the police in my community i havent seen them act like that treat a parent like that or scream at people or draw a gun. Quoting one of these officers, screaming at one of the parents, give me your child. That will is certainly not in the Traditional Police handbook for a stop that doesnt involve a weapon. No, its not. See, two things here. First of all, for those hose contend that there are just a few apples and the bunch is great, this gives the lie to that. How many videos have to surface . How many examples of the lethal intensity of Law Enforcement when applied to africanamerican and latino people . The police seem to have an asterisk assigned to those people of color. The laws dont apply. Jeannal deportment and kind and gracious behavior toward them seems to fly out the window. These people were being treated as if they have stolen a Million Dollars right on the spot that they beat somebody on the head that they had somehow killed somebody and now theyre being treated. Number two, white criminals who have murdered six and seven and eight people, they were apprehended without incident. Dylann roof who killed nine people in a church in South Carolina treated to burger king on the way to being locked up. So my point, is that there is a wide chasm of perception and practice in this country around the issue of race. And when we start at the police department, how many more reports do we have to are issued that slaes says theres a deep and infected culture of policing in this country. Its about the demonfullization of brown and black people and not seeing them as human. We cant say lets root out the problem at the police level because they are people who grew up in a culture toward blackness that manifests itself when they become police people. Thank god for van jones and criminal Justice Reform and bail reform. Thats on the let latter end. At the beginning weve got to teach, root out and again, do you what i tell you to do. What is the power trip here . What is the fascination, the erotic intensity assigned with dehumanizing blackness seems to be criminal pornography. This is police pornography, the kind of fascination and fetish of dehumanizing blackness before the world. This happens time and again across this country on video, off video on tape, off tape. And what we have to do is to challenge ourselves. I ask every White American out there who says my god, this doesnt happen to my kids. Why doesnt it . It doesnt happen to your kids by and large not that it doesnt, by and large because there is not a racial assignment of privilege or personhood or the assignment of a kind you have stigma and dehumanization that happens with africanamerican and latino people. Until we address that and have a day when we come at it at the root level, this kind of thing will happen time and again and people will die and nothing will changing. Its well put. Its arab youve worked on and written about and thought about. We wanted to put it in this context as we hear talk about criminal Justice Reform, whats being addressed. Professor dyson, thank you as always. Later, senator cory booker joins me exclusively. Inside Trumps Campaign when were back in 30. Lusively inside Trumps Campaign when were back in 30 y lexus nx. Free pass they gave to hillary and her aides after they set up an illegal server. I have seen firsthand how the system is rigged. The system is rigged. Corrupt media pushing completely false allegations and outright lies. The fake news will say headlines, he didnt fill up the arena. You know . News viewers and critics may find some of these lines basically steal. Its worth noting many trump loyalists are pumped. The arena was of fans, a long line. Lots of mag ga hats and branding. We saw these far right groups, the proud boys marching outside. The Southern Poverty Law Center calls them a hate group which often associates with white supremacists. Theres more than just that. Take a look what the wall street journal uneithered revealing this campaign branding book for 2020 which shows laser focus on certain things, the font size is, spacing, the only certain colors that can be used for certain trump events, images of trump designed to convey compassion or strength especially online. And thats not all. If you looked at those lines we just showed and thought there he goes again or its stale, consider how some of this plays out in local media markets. The Orlando Sentinel headline. Its right on brand. Keep america great. And those color schemes in the branding book are reflected in that photo which would look to be exactly the photo that the Trump Campaign wants. Or look at the miami herald. Trump energizes orlando rally as he launches reelection bid. Folks reading that are getting the trump vision. Take a look at this, this is something you may not see on the news but we pulled it from a Pro Trump Group on reddit where hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions interact. It says the basic bottom line maga mess and, i pledge to vote for this man again and i trust him more than nel Media Company on the planet. You can ignore some of this stuff if you want. You can tune it out if you want. You can Pay Attention to whatever you want. Journalistically were showing it to you not because it is all true or okay when you look at the proud boys but because this is part of the larger production of how trump is running for reelection. It is certainly an a television and internet production. Consider ho put in charge of his campaign, very interesting. Not a washington insider, not even a Family Member like he likes to do in certain things, no. He took the person in charge of digital from last time and made him in charge of the whole thing. Heres what hes saying. You know, the president s going to win this. Ive always said the president won the first election with his airplane and a cell phone and a twitter account. This time we have to do more mobilization. Im joined by media innovatorer Michael Hersch horn hon created the concept of celebrity tv like flavor of love, and celebrate rehab. He writes for the atlantic and is a trump critic. Thanks for coming back. Thanks for having me. Im never going to live down account flava flav thing. Why would you want to. So true. Your keys to decorroding this prosecution. Whats really interesting is that the show is now itself the pitch. We want to keep the show going. If you think about this in terms of from a tv Network Perspective which is how the trump people think about it, its whats the spinoff, whats the next season. Whats interesting is whats disappeared, whats disappeared are economic arguments. Inclusive holistic arguments for why on a policy basis he should be reelected. He himself is now the argument. He wants to keep the show going. And so the question is, in terms of decoding this Going Forward is what is he going to do in order to keep us captivated. Thats where it starts to get a little concerning. When you look at say that meme we show, something people share on the internet proudly. They want it to upset you. Its like coming to the Family Reunion and being like yeah, fake news. I trust him more than your media. Its designed to upset. Do you view that as something thats ever penetratable in any way or those people sharing that stuff have made their mind up . I think what trump has always done has been deny, deny, deny than admit it. So the argument in 2016 was this is really about economic insecurity. Right now, its about your opportunity mostly as a white guy but not exclusive there to, there was a fantastic piece of video of this white guy ripping his shirt off and basically shaking his boobs in front of the protesters. That is the perfect metaphor for what trumps appeal is right now. Im going to put on a show. You can act however you want and you can go on upsetting the other side as much as you want. Is that an effective strategy . I dont know. That may be a way to really rev up the core. Whether that can build out, i dont know because i dont see how anyone who is not already a trump supporter will become one based on there. Do you think their digital traction is a kind of accident they improvised or something thought out to a guy given thought to free press . Theyre outspending democrats on facebook right now. Massively. The democrats still dont understand digital. The republicans and trump picked up from where obama started in 2008. And put a vastly larger percentage of their spends in 2016 and theyre already doing it. Theyve already spent well into the seven figures on facebook this year for next year alone which i think is about a 101 outspend of democrats. Democrats continue not to understand the digital is where the election will be fought. Its fascinating hear you say that and a reminder when theres so much almost dismissive or smug views how trump is doing and well be the first to point out, these respect original lines, you steal them from reagan and reboot them. Theres a whole production echo to all of that. Michael, thanks for coming back on the beat. Appreciate it. Now only 10. 99. Today is juneteenth when black americans in texas learned they were freed. Many invoke this day for civil rights causes from education to antipoverty programs to larger ideas like preparations for savory long considered radical by both Political Parties in america. Barack obama consistently argued against preparations for slavery in preference for broader reforms. When it comes to represearat would you apologize or offer reparations to various groups. I have said in the past and ill repeat again the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people unemployed. But somethings clearly shifting. Congress held its first hearing on reparations in 12 years. Many black leaders have been pushing this like john conyers who proposed a bill every session for 30 years. He was back in that room today and so was ton na coats. And here five years later, he went from banging on the door to serving as a star witness and rebutting mcconnells argument today that reparations arent necessary for something that he argues doesnt relate to anyone currently alive. Black people were subjected to a Relentless Campaign of terror. A campaign that extended well into the lifetime of majority leader mcconnell. We grant that the mr. Mcconnell was not alive for appomattox but he was alive for the electrocution of George Stinney and the red lining of chicago and the looting of black homeowners of some 4 billion. Victims of that plunder are very much alive today. I am sure theyd love a word with the majority leader. Powerful. And in another development that the first witness of the day was a sitting is senator, a cosponsor of this reparations bill who spoke about the stakes. It is a cancer on the soul of our country and hurts the whole body politic. I am brokenhearted and angry right now. Decades of living in a community where you see how deeply unfair their nation is still to so many people. This idea that its just about writing a check from one american to another falls far short of the importance of this is conversation and what i believe we will truly talk about. Joining me now is that senator and president ial candidate, cory booker. Thank you for being here. You sounded quite strong in what you had to say there in your testimony. Why are you doing this and why now . Look, ive lived and worked most of my life in low income communities, black and brown communities. And have been dealing with historical headwinds of segregation, of red lining of Health Disparities of Public Policies being stemmed from washington like the gi bill and Social Security that were designed to exclude africanamericans from the terrorism that reigned in our country for generations all the way back to slavery. This is a conversation that we have not fully had in the United States of america and how the roots of savage inequalities are still being manifested today because of the structural inequities baked into our system and dealing with this issue and finding Practical Solutions to address those disparities baked from our history is something that we must do and now is the moment. Youre leading on there bill, senator Bernie Sanders opposed reparations the last time he ran. He now supports this bill but also said hes not sure that writing a check is the answer. My question to you is, one, do you two have the same vision on there right now and two, should the democratic nominee, should the democratic platform in 2020 be for slavery reparations. Thats whats become. A lot of people dont like the word because it evokes this imagination people have whipped up by opponents who think this is about one person writing a check to another person. Thats not what this is about. Its about how can we continue as a nation to have the kind you have deep systemic inequalities that we have that stem from income to Health Disparities to our criminal Justice System. This is about actually leveling the playing field. Its not about paying somebody off. And to reduce this to some idea were going to write some check and be done is so wrong. Your bill basically would put a small amount of money into create a commission to study this. If you are running for president , if you have these ideas, is that enough or is it time to put the money directly into the program . Why still study it at this point. Well, deminimus amount of resources to study it and have which will be historically the first conversation literally the First Commission weve created to see how to address these issues. We have commissions in washington and you know this ari, to study all kind of stuff. Which i think a lot of it is less aurth than what were talking about right now. There are practical things. At the end of the day, you talk about putting resources into things. My baby bonds legislation about having every child born in america having aginteresting bearing account for them and money placed in every single year depending upon the wealth of your family would give the lowest American Kids kds upwards of 50,000 to do things that create wealth. Your baby bond proposal is not based on a slavery reparations model, right . Thats for potentially everyone. As you know, president obama said that idea like what you just mentioned is exactly what should be done but not something that is somehow specifically tied to race or slavery. Walk us through why essentially you break with obama there. Ari two things. One thing is, were bringing this commission together to study exactly what it would mean. I think for you or i to prejudge what some of the best minds in america would talk to at the end of this process is folly. Lets see
