Criminal Defense Attorneys left for flynns lawyer. It asked for information and the voicemail, here again, from the report in the filing, said if there is information that implicates the president , weve got a National Security issue. So you know, we need some kind of heads up. Just for the sake of pregting all of our interests, if we go. Remember that weve always said about the president and his feelings toward flynn, and that still remains. These new revelations of how the president s team were trying to engage in these high level discussions with an individual who now had an obligation to mueller. The question being, were those efforts to potentially obstruct or thwart the Mueller Probe . This is interesting because some of this may sound familiar to you because weve been hearing about it. But it comes now in a back drop where the Democratic Party and congressional leaders are openly discussing what to do about both congressional stonewalling and the hangover from what the Mueller Report showed. All of this has people talking about the i word. The president s policy now, the president s posture now, is making it impossible to rule out impeachment or anything else. Grounds for impeachment. If you look at the second part of the Mueller Report. There is no question that obstruction of justice does exist. I think the president every day gives grounds for impeachment in terms of his obstruction of justice. I want to get right to it with the Campaign Director for the action fund. And robert costa, National Political reporter for the Washington Post who has been a chronicler of the trump presidency, as well as the Mueller Probe frts inception. Good evening to both of you. What do you think of the significance of what were seeing in these details in the flynn filing against this wider back drop, as we just saw, including the former obama eric holder, speaking out today on what he called grounds for impeachment. It is absolutely clear with trumps blanket rejection of all these document requests from congress, that he is hiding something. His team coordinating as it relates to the Mueller Report. And everything that mueller laid out in his report all points to an effort to really interfere and be engaged in an unproductive way that should be raising flags for American People. And honestly, at this point, if congress is not allowed to move forward, it really shows trump is using his leverage to operate as a dictator would, as a tyrant would. And thats really dangerous. Congress has the Legal Authority to hold him accountable. They have the Legal Authority to request these documents. And this new report really highlights that. They should be able to move forward. Bob, take us inside the white house based on your reporting. And against a back drop where there has been, i think it is fair to say, some moving of the goalposts. And mr. Barr has tried to put his view of things out in washington as the first draft of history. They havent yet let bob mueller set a date for testimony. Then barr today in reports coming out today says hes not blocking the testimony to congress saying it is bobs call. Whether he wants to testify. Theres a lot of pressure on the attorney general to allow him to testify. With regard to the breaking news on general flynn and interaction with his teams interactions with the president s lawyers, there is a feeling inside this white house that they have a blind spot when it comes to some of these obstruction questions. What i mean by that is, there are personal lawyers for the president who have been on the outside. An ever changing cast at times from dowd to giuliani to jay sekulow who have had exchanges and interactions with witnesses in the Mueller Probe. Where it was Michael Cohen or Michael Flynn and others. And those conversations are not always known or really understood inside the administration. They feel like as this moves forward on capitol hill, the president s personal lawyers will be under more scrutiny by democrats. I want to ask but that blind spot. One of the things that comes through to me and im curious having talked to these folks is, there was kind of an apparent fear that trump may have actually done more than mueller found that he did. Did something worse than what part one of the report says. Now that we know it all. Because you can see quite clearly the panic in that voicemail. Lawyers dont want to generally leave a voicemail like. That they want a live call. Negligent a cooperating witness and his lawyers. The question, what does flynn have . What do you know that could really hurt the boss . And i say to you, how did they get so nervous unless they didnt believe what trump was telling them. That part one of the Mueller Report would suggest that there was not a quid pro quo. Theyve been nervous since day one. They know how the president operates in this extemporaneous style. About who hes talking to, what hes saying, even when it comes to things like foreign policy. He had phone calls. He doesnt always write in the formal circle of people that pla president would bring in. About not really knowing the full context of every conversation he had with many of the witnesses during the course of the transition and early on in the presidency. To simplify it a little bit, i dont want to put words in his mouth. Im saying this. The one thing they agree on, you cannot really trust trump. Cant trust trump. Hes lied to the american public. Hes apparently lying to his own attorneys to the point where theyre all trying to scramble and figure out what he has over m , he has omitted. That congress should be able to foinld the truthful we need the hear from mueller in public testimony. We need to get to the bottom of this. A big story and it is why it was our breaking news lead. Bob casta, thank you for jumping in with us. Juanita, stay with me. The other big story is the president stepping out today, proposing a plan that would basically require a lot more cooperative relationship with congress than what he has. This is an immigration plan that would try to increase what the white house calls the education and skills requirements for incoming immigrants. It would attempt to build parts of trumps famous border wall and keep immigration levels in their broad numbers, the same as they are now. Changing the categories of who might get into the country. As you know, anything donald trump says on immigration tends to be polarizing. This plan today has managed to draw rebukes from both parties. Should sham proposal is dead on arrival. It is a mockery of what manager needs. The white house plan is not designed to become law. Were learning the Trump Administration wants to use executive power to try to have the u. S. Military erect tent cities. This is from january. This is from Donald Trumps nominee to lead i. C. E. Ive been to detention facilities where ive walked up to these individuals that are socalled minors, 17 or under. Ive looked at them and ive looked at their eyes and i said that is a soon to be ms 13 gang member. It is unequivocal. Soon to be gang member of i want to bring in the professor and juanita is still with us. Put this into context for us. Anyone watching, even if you landed from mars tonight and only saw this much of the news. Theres a huge clash over potential impeachment. The stone walling of congress. And then the president stepping out today and saying he has a plan and he wants to work with congress on it. Walk us through that apparently tension as well as what is in the plan itself in your vow. So immigration has been the president s safe space. This is what he built his campaign on from day one. He was going to be running for presidency. So a couple of different moving parts. The rose garnet speech was about a Legal Immigration plan. We want more mirror based immigration as opposed to family reunification. But it is a no go. Both sides of the aisle are not happy with it. Hes not giving democrats what they want in terms of resolving the undocumented population and how we normalize that, or the daca recipients. The base says, this is way too liberal. Youre giving away too much. So what do you people make of the idea, deep numbers the same but have more quote unquote skilled migrants. Tell us what you think about that. The gang of eight bill did that. They were able to get a bill passed, a bipartisan bill in the senate saying were going to tamp down family reunification but there will be a path for legalization for these 11 million undocumented persons who are here. Without that component, it is dead on arrival. You have to have give and take and there is no give in this component. There is been a lot of belly aching about reunification. Even though melanias parents were naturalized as a base for family reunification. I get off topic. This is going to be a really tough one because for the Democratic Party, this is a core issue unless there is something substantive in return. And i was wondering, reading in the New York Times article, they mentioned if youve implemented this and youve explained why, and lengthy graham, they all agree this wont happen. In terms of policy part seriously and putting aside trumps antics, if did you increase this type of immigration, it says the salaries of those immigrants would go up. Potentially double. Does that appeal to trumps base . Or do they say, oh, that would send a lot of money at skilled immigrants, which is not exactly what he ran on in the first place. Notwithstanding the other things. This language about increasing, it speaks very directly to that country club republican. The george w. Bush republican. So this is purely a political ploy. He knows his base will hate it. Just to slow down what youre saying. Youre staying corporation size likes it. Yes. The old school republicans. The ones who want to see the fiscal growth that comes with a healthy and robust immigration system. Our under employment is at record lows. We need immigration. There is an old saying. There is an old saying nothing is like fiscal based immigration plan. Indeed. Im going to fit in a break. Im sure everyone is happy about that. Thanks to both of you. Appreciate you being part of our coverage. Coming up, we have a lot more to get to. It is fairly unusual crackdown, unprecedented access. What everyone is talking about is a negative record for the white house. 66 days since the last formal press briefing in march. The footage you see from the press secretary is months old. Because neither miss sanders or any other official has stepped to that lectern in 66 days. A record for any administration in the past 26 years. Us about that whole fancy White House Press room with the whole official lectern. You have to wonder if it will start collecting dust. If the staff never use it. In fact, this photo shows there is dust amassing on that lectern. This is not normal. As you certainly know if you watch the news across both parties, the white house holds, usually over ten briefings a month and often on a daily basis to inform the public about developments. Under trump there have been two briefing this is year. Whatever people think of the briefings, they can be tedious and less than enlightening depending on who is at the lectern. The aholding them provides accountability, for an exchange between the white house and free press. It has been avoided regarding the battle plans in iran or a single day of questions the little thing called the Mueller Report which included evidence on both current and former white house staff, thwarting the probe or lying for the president , including Sarah Sanders herself. What led you and the white house to believe that you had lost the confidence of the rank and file of the fbi . The acting director said the opposite . I can speak to my own personal experience. Ive heard from countless members of the fbi that are grateful and thankful for the president s decision. The Mueller Report reveals then Deputy Press SecretarySarah Huckabee sanders lied to the press about comeys firing. Sanders who was interviewed by the special counsels team admitted her claim of hearing from countless members of the fbi was a, quote, slip of the tongue. The point is not about whether she would get some fastballs on that. It is that the Trump White House continues to press, test, attack and shatter all kinds of obligations of government to see what it can get away with. Confiscating the press pass of a tv reporter in november of last year. That went too far. A judge overruled it. The white house is back at hit the month taking press passes from Washington Post reporters like dana milbank and jonathan capehart. There have been far smaller moves. And has donald trump grinded through five Communications Director and now derrelling he doesnt need one at all of he said hell focus on interviews with friendly media outlets. 44 with fox news. Under a dozen with all other net works combined. This isnt just about trump beefing with the press. This about the role, the very existence of a 47 press dealing with the white house. When you think about that dusty lectern, it is the latest sign of how the white house will do anything kit to dodge accountability and then see whether anyone notices. I am joined by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, jonathan has figured into this story. Good evening to you. Hi. What does it mean that theyve cut off these briefings almost entirely in 2019 . It means that they dont want to be held accountable. Look, the president s predecessors didnt have a Good Relationship with the press. They had a contentious relationship with the press. They respected the press and they respected the role of the press. I always tell people this and we cant mention it often enough. Theres only one profession protected in the constitution of the United States. And that is the press. Freedom of the press is vital for a democracy. It is vital because that is how the citizenry is informed about what the government is doing in its name. And when the government decides that it doesnt respect the press enough to hold press briefings, to hold it, to make itself accountable to the American People by not doing briefings at all, or to be fair, the president does make himself available to the press, but as up in your set up there. He is only talking to friendly press. The questions will be softballs at best for him. And not stand there in the east room as hes only done a handful have times to answer questions from nbc. From the Washington Post. From cnn and abc, and all those folks who had been sitting in the White House Briefing room asking questions that are important and vital for the american public. When you put it that way, a lot of this is important about whether you get it on the record. The first thing that happens, if the white house or anybody in government is caught lying, theres anger for that. But you have to have a forum to hold them accountable to even see whether it happens in the first place. So i wonder whether the relative unpopularity of the press briefing is part of what lets them get away with it. Im curious what you think about the penn statistic. Were talking about holding them accountable. Over 300 days since the press briefing in this administration. Right. This gets into a situation where, im sure youve seen this on your twitter feed. And hive people mention this and come to me in person and ask, why do folks even bother to show up at the white house . Show up at the briefings . Why do we even bother to cover the president . And i understand where theyre coming from. They dont want to give out information. They dome respect the press. They dont want to be transparent despite what the president says about his being the most trans Parent Administration in the history of everything. You know, the fact that theyre not, the fact that theyre not doing that, to me, says, they dont care. They really dont care. And not only have they had a reverence for the constitution. They had a reverence for the role of the press. We have a president with no reverence for the constitution. Otherwise he would be allowing the subpoenas, allowing special counsel barr to testify will he would be bengd over backwards to be accountable to the American People of he doesnt revere the press. So when you have those two things, it is not surprising that we havent had a briefing in the press Briefing Room in 60 something days. Or at the pentagon this more than 300 days. What about the other agencies where there are consequential things happening . Theyll see what they can get away is. Well shine a light that. Still ahead, Sherrilyn Ifill is here. How trumps presidency is damaging his profits. Damaging his profits because here, you can choose any car in the aisle, even if its a better car class than the one you reserved. So no matter what, youre guaranteed to have a perfect drive. [laughter] vo go national. Go like a pro. See what i did there . Many trump insiders say trump ran for president for his brand and not to win. Donald trump ran for office to make his brand great. Mr. Trump would often say, this campaign was going to be the greatest enfoe mergs in political history. The campaign for him was always a marketing opportunity. The idea was free promotion from a losing campaign to help the business. What about a Winning Campaign . It shows that being president is costing him money. Maralago did raise its membership fees after won but it still pulled in 15 million less than 2016. Dorell is down 41 million. A local consultant says it is from the negative connotations associated with the trump brand. This extra scrutiny of the president has revealed, the billion dollars he lost into the 90s was more than double. On the one has not, he is now paying a business price for his political career. On the other, he has experience with this challenge that he faces right now. Spinning giant business losses into claims that hes good at business. In fact, the republican primary tested this very issue. Because back in 2016, Party Leaders were standing up to trump and noting his faults. I dont know anything about bankrupting four companies. Theyre suing him now. 36,000 to go to trump university. Thats a fake school. The litigation against trump university. A fraud case. You lied yeah, yeah. 38 years ago. Many of those loud voices have gone silent about what they then called trumps alleged fraud. And despite the six bankruptcies, despite the new losses today at trump properties, despite the New York Times reporting that trump lost more money than virtually any other. At a pair, he is still running on the myth that he is a tough business titan with the overcompensation that hints at insecurity. Consider some spiritual security from from. All this killing but where the bodies at. All this money, where the bugattis at. Dig a little deeper and you will see a man sitting in a two seater. Up next, the at of the deal best seller. Then later announced trump and has the energy products. He heeds a recurring state of mind series. What is trump doing here when he has such a bad business story to tell . What he always does. 10,000 lies later, deny, accuse, do anything to dein effect attention from what the reality is. What hes been remarkable at throughout his career is, keeping an image at the very least, about his effectiveness as a businessman. Alive in the face of what we now know are massive losses. And i say we because i include myself of i was writing that book in 1986, 1987, when we now know he was losing hundreds of millions of dollars. At least, tens of million of dollars on an annual basis. And you could sit with donald trump and have no clue that that was going on. The way he presented it to me and the world is im doing better than ever. If we go through book today and you look at what actually happen, three of the chapters are about 1casinos and two are going bankrupt. He got rid of tenants here didnt want because he was paying rents that were too low. It was a massive story of a failure. The United StatesFootball League which we wrote about was something that went bankrupt. Ette trump would say, net, net. I am making tens of billions of dollars and im a billionaire. I dont believe at any point in his career hes been a billionaire. You dont. Absolutely not. And the media has continued to act as if thats true. Maybe this times report changes that bust year in and year out, forbes finds him to be a billionaire. There are times when i think he hasnt been worth virtually anything and this may be one of them. There are more details now. But he managed to vanquish that then. Is there any learning kev in your view . Trump has managed to debase our human an. It is not trump but the impact on the collective. We are meant as human beings to evolve. To see more, to develop, to be a wider, deeper, longer perspective. You can also devolve. He is a genius about stoking fear in a way that gets people to support him. Only he will save them. And hes a genius about stoking fear and anger and frustration in the people who oppose him. And therefore, drag him, drag us down to his level. So the level at which we operate, it is so much closer to survival today than to any kind of thriving, evolving perspective. I see that at this moment, could it get loose. The legacy that is worst about him. It goes to whether he will get away with more. Thank you as always. Appreciate you being here. Coming up, abortion rights under attack. And another thing many are focused on because it is supposed to be the law of the land. And later, our behind the scenes interview with cory booker. Bookr i had a heart problem. I was told to begin my aspirin regimen, and i just didnt listen. Until i almost lost my life. My doctors again ordered me to take aspirin, and i do. And theres no looking back, because i am cured. Talk to your doctor about mavyret. I dont want to be a fear monger but i do believe that they are trying to go on a path that will totally dismantle roe v. Wade and we have to be vigilant. Speaker pelosi issuing that warning as alabama is documenting the strictest abortion law in the country. Which supporters say they want. Betting it could change all of this and then consider this action in the senate today. 52 senators voting to confirm trump pick wendy vitter as a judge. She says abortions cause cancer. She also joins over two dozen trump picks who refuse to say whether the brown versus board of education decision was correct. Do you believe brown versus board of education was correctly deed . I think i get into a difficult, a different, a difficult area when i start commenting on Supreme Court decisions, which are correctly decided and which i may disagree with. Now, it can be difficult for judicial nominees to discuss certain new issues they might have to rule on or every specific case under the sun. But civil rights leaders stress the unanimous decision against apartheid is not a difficult case to say you support. And support, in a 65th anniversary of that ruling. So we turn now to one of the nations leading civil rights advocates. Legal defense Fund President , she Sherrilyn Ifill. Good to have you here. What do you say about this . Its actually quite significant. And i think it is important to, for us to see the wakeup call. There are nearly 30 judicial nominees who since wendy vitter have refused to say that brown versus board of education was correctly decided. This is a seed change from what we have seen over the past decades. Those on the right and those on the left. Chief Justice Roberts and his confirmation hearing, talked extensivebly brown and saw no problem talking about it. He thought it was as likely to come back before the Supreme Court as marbury versus madison. The case that created judicial review. Justice alito said it vindicated the true meaning of the equal amendments claus. And even judge kavanaugh described it as the most important case in Supreme Court history. Suddenly in a move i have to believe is orchestrated, these trump nominees have refused to discuss the brown case. And we would be foolish to ignore this and to think this is an accident or by chance of the it is not. Because brown constitutes such an important moment about american democracy, we should all take note. You said that you believe it might be orchestrated. Rod rosenstein is the most famous attorney general in american history. He has a replacement who is less famous but is now on the job. And this is what he said when pressed about it. Was brown versus board of education correctly deed . Senator, i dont think that it would be a productive exercise for me to go through the most thousands of Supreme Court opinions and say which ones are right and which are wrong. Whatever the law is, whether it is the decision i would favor or disfavor, i see it as the role of the department of justice to uphold the law such as it is, unless congress or the courts change it. What do you say to their rebuttal as you just heard . That theyre just not going to get into it. Get into what . Get into whether or not africanamericans are entitled to be treated as full citizens . Where the 14 amendment truly guarantees evening balance protection to all people in the United States . Brown is not one of thousands of cases. It is a Supreme Court case, sufficient as marbury versus madison. It speaks to modern democracy. Until last year, this was not controversial. The idea that somehow you have to demure on brown because youll object a slippery slope is absurd. If chief Justice Roberts recognized brown as lying at the center of the cannon of the rule of law, if our entire profession has been united on the left and the right about the importance of evening balance protection and the brown decision, it is astonishing that someone who will be the Deputy Attorney general overseeing the departments like the Civil Rights Division that has a portfolio of cases that directly depend on brown, to feel as though he cannot talk about the brown case, is astonishing. That he was confirmed today is quite alarming. We should beware. Tomorrow is the 65th anniversary of the brown versus education. We are not going to be deterred. We see what is at stake. We see what the man is and were leaning in hard to protect equal rights in this country. As we talk about civil rights under the law. You think about all the cases for leniency, for a Second Chance given the Racial Disparities in the system. So while i have you. Im curious, your reaction to how the president is using his commutation power. Here for viewers who may have forgotten is conrad black. He is very famous, he wrote this book, donald j. Trump, a president like no other. My reaction is it is appalling but it could never be more appalling than the pardon given to sheriff joe arpaio. Given to racial profiling against immigrants who was held if contempt by a federal court and pardoned by this president. Is president is using his pardon power strategically to speak tois had base. He pardoned scooter libby. That spoke to a particular segment of conservative republicans who wanted to see the Vice President s former counsel, Vice President cheneys cabinet. Not to recognize a true injustice. There are many thousands of people waiting for mercy and chemency from the president of the United States. These tonight strike me as the best candidates. It shows when this president talks about law and order. He doesnt mean law and order. He means the laws that he believes in. He means law and order only as it mize to people he demonizes and stigmatizes as being criminal. So this pardon is very much skin with that. That low water mark was sheriff joe arpaio. I dont know if it gets any lower than that. Thank you so much for being here tonight. Thank you. Coming up, we see candidates who are on the record and careful. One is about to let their guard down.
