How should democrats seize populism . Fred nader will talk politics joining in the first nader sandwich on television. Well explain what that means later. We begin with the new polling showing democrats taking doubledigit leads in the midterms stoking republican jitters with strategists giving up on some of the house districts that republicans wanted in order to stem the bleeding. Here you have it, the dems 11point lead and ap reporting republicans view this as a when and not and if spinning a blame game why they would lose it and allegations that it would be congress fault that they let the ball drop on its promise to invest 62 million and losing a dozen house races. Donald trump struck a more melancholy tone as of late. He sounded downright plaintive about how tough politics can be. Washington, d. C. Is a vicious, vicious place. The attacks, the badmouthing, the speaking behind your back. You know, and my way i feel very comfortable here. Trump also comfortable doing anything to survive. The talks are under way reportedly for how his team might work with democrats if they do take back the house so the bottom line tonight, the democrats lead already is having an impact. Washington prepping for whatever november brings. But as Everybody Knows from many, including 2016, a lead is not a victory which is especially true in this era which is the fastest, most nonstop omni present news cycle ever and an overconfident perception the democrats will win could hurt them. Widespread turnout in a nonpresident ial year. Lets take this paradox to our panel. The New York Times maura gay and the Washington Post gene robinson, and, gene, i bring this paradox to you first with a famous concept from the sociologist, w. I. Thomas. If they define situations as real they are real in their consequences. Dou they dont want to have the consequences hurt their turnout. The republicans have been complaining for most of the election cycle about President Trump saying , were going to d great and fearing republicans would be overconfident and stayed home. Now democrats that now there is a consensus that the democrats are ahead and ahead by enough of a margin to suggest that theyre quite likely to take the house, i think theres a very legitimate concern that democrats will say, oh, well, its a done deal so we dont have to actually make the effort to vote and so i would really caution people against saying democrats have a 70 of doing this or that. Thats a snapshot and basically a very, very educated guess, but nobody is going to win anything by 70 . Its going to be close. A bunch of close elections and every vote is going to matter. We talked a lot about who likes who, maura and talk about, oh, well, donald trump has his base, but there is a resistance that was larger than his base from the start of this because Hillary Clinton won more votes and now thats distributed across the midterms but put it to the side as we get closer to november and it is about turnout. We want to show some of this in the context of people who say theyre certain to turn out, 81 79 of people who claim theyre absolutely certain. So really statistical margin of error there. If you look at 2014 in october as a comparison there you had a much larger republican turnout and their voting blocs generally are higher for offyear elections. This is a tale of two houses really is what it is, the house of representatives is more representative of the popular vote and therefore turnout is, of course, extremely important but the democrats have the advantage here and, you know, this is not an abnormal thing. Two years after the president comes into office, you generally have the opposite party with gains, of course, were not in a normal time and its certainly true that donald trump is exciting his base but his base wont be enough to overcome the, you know, frankly the majority of americans who oppose this president and the house is going to reflect that. The senate is a different story. The senate is just is not as representative of the popular vote. Its also a battle of the suburbs. Youre looking at the fundraising and spending where money is allocated and republicans are looking very down on their chances in the suburbs and thats really where a lot of strategists say this house will be won or lost. Look at numbers theyre significant. You talked about the certainty to vote but enthusiasm is up and its up among key demographics, young women, women, minority, all likely to benefit democrats but the but, but, but, polls never mattered for trump in the general election. Will they matter in the midterritories . Trump wants to make the race about him and hes doing a pretty good job. Gene, as you know, if there is going to be a congressional midterm message thats going to unite the whole country on to whats going to propel democrats, its going to be personal dna testing. Obviously thats apparently. If thats what you want to go into. For folks not party the boston globe reporting warren releases dna test with evidence she has some native American Heritage in her family tree. It goes back six to ten generations then she tried to make this monday news flash, very coordinated then she took to the president s medium and say, remember saying on july 5th youd give a Million Dollars to a charity of my choice if my dna showed that tiff american ancestry. I remember, heres the verdict, send it to the National Womens resource center. Gene, this is one of those things i get what shes trying to do. I dont think it was a fair attack to begin with but not sure this is the time or focus for the democrats. What do you make of this. This is not the time or focus for the democrats and i understand why shes doing it and why shes doing it now, its about 2020. Its not about 2018. I think the Democratic Party needs to be all about 2018 and i have said and written, you know, to the to broken record extent that, look, dont even think about that president ial race. That will take care of itself. The Democratic Party has to get past 2018 and needs to have some power because the party is powerless right now. And, you know, you got to have power to play and you cant play this game where the democrats are now. They need to win a house of congress. They need to win a bunch of governors races and some state legislatures to set themselves up for redistricting in 2020 they really need to focus on next month. And, mara, i think this is something where people can relate to Elizabeth Warren being trolled this way by the president , you know, a birtherism was antiblack. This particular heritage obsession of his is more i guess antidemocratic white woman and so i get the desire to address it in some way, but i want to read you jim messina who is a supporter who says, look, argue substance all you want but 22 days before a crucial election where we must win the house and senate to save america, why does senator warren have to do her announcement now. Why cant dems ever stay focused . Absolutely right. In terms of the Elizabeth Warren the attack on warren, i believe that was actually about white anxieties among Donald Trumps base about who is write in america but thats not what democrats should be focused on. Two issues they should be focused on this those key districts. Only two, health care and the gop tax bill. Those are the issues you hear again and again from these swing state democrats that have been extremely influential with independent voters, democrats in those suburban districts as you said are extremely upset with the republican agenda and what trump has done on health care and on taxes. Those are the winning issues in those districts. You know what, we have two more years to talk about whats helpful for the democratic base, theres certainly issues beyond those but you think she misfired. I think that she not only misfired but i think that, you know, its easy for Elizabeth Warren to go out and talk about that because she doesnt have to go win in a swing district and there are a lot of democrats who are fighting for seats in swing districts and they really arent talking about those two issues and thats what voters want to hear. Her message is not going to change anything. It wont change the minds of people who made fun of her for claiming her native american ancestry or the mind of trump support whose laugh at his joke when he says pocahontas. I dont think itll stop him from making that joke joke is not the right term. You dont think this deeply researched genetic material. Ten generations back no, its not going to change anything. Its a distraction, democrats cannot stay on message to save their lives. Theyre all over the place and, mara, i would add health care is big, tax cuts big, immigration is also very big. You get the feeling native american an tress tri has nothing to do with that. Not on the top ten list. You get the feeling she didnt road test this with everyone. Trump denying he ever asked russia for help during the 2016 election. Do you really think id call russia to help me with an election . Give me a break. They wouldnt be able to help me at all. Call russia, its so ridiculous. It would be ridiculous to call russia unless, of course, in july of 2016 you literally did it. Do you really think id call russia to help me with an election . Give me a break. They wouldnt be able to help me at all. Russia, if youre listening i hope youre able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. You know, its just complete impunity at this point. Its very clear that the president can say anything that he wants and hes not held accountable for it by his base, the rest of america, though, i think is still reality bases and those people will vote in november and not much Donald Trumps tweets are going to do about that. Also an interesting denial saying essentially russia would never be able to help me anyways, theres plenty of evidence that shows russia did help the president. Its evidence from the special counsels office, its evidence coming from academics, its evidence from social Media Companies so hes not only dismissing the fact he called on russia but that russia even helped him which we know is not true. Right, the other point, gene that, is on policy here because it goes to how we deal with these other countries is the president tough enough or independent enough to deal with the saudis, russians and the countries that oppose National Security challenges . Here he was in the same interview with lesley stahl trying to suggest that he is tough with putin but does it in secret and thats why we never hear about it. I mean, him personally. Vladimir putin i think im very tough with him personally. I had a meeting with him. The two of us, it was a very tough meeting and it was a very good meeting. Do you agree that Vladimir Putin is involved in assassinations, in poisonings . Probably he is, yeah, probably. I mean probably. Probably but i rely on them. Its not in our country. Gene. Yeah, well, no, hes not tough enough with Vladimir Putin and one could only imagine what those meetings are like. Its not just that what Vladimir Putin did with the 2016 election, its what he is doing around the world. Its what he is doing to interfere with european democracies, its what hes doing in syria to bolster the assad regime and which is a murderous regime. Its what its the role he a playing on the world stage and President Trump wont say a bad word about him. He just wont say a bad word about him in public and theres no reason to believe that he says a bad word about him in private. Quite telling when you see what came out of that interview. My thanks to mara and shelby and, gene, stay with me. I want you with Doris Kearns Goodwin later in the hour. More on trump revealed. His recurring focus on babies. I mean, im not a baby. Im not a baby. Babies. Who is a baby . The political people. And lots of people talking about this white house painting that has President Trump at the table with past president s. Doris Kearns Goodwin and later my interview with one of the most polarizing figures, what is ralph nader up to now. It may be monday but we have a special fallback sandwich later in the show. Click or visit a retail store today. I mean, im not a baby. Fact check, true. The president is not a baby. The point he raised repeatedly in this 60 minutes interview. I mean, im not a baby. I know but im not a baby. This is a tough business. This is a vicious place. I always used to say the toughest people are manhattan real estate guys and blah, blah now i say theyre babies. Who is the political people. Trumps penchant for referencing babies is an insult or insecurity that has deep roots. Authors josh green and bob woodwarded reported how he shouted at manafort, you treat me like a baby. I sit here like a little baby and you watch tv and you talk to me. Am i an fing baby, paul . That gained traction after international activistsanced that question, yes. Trolling the president with a giant diaper clad trump baby blimp flown in london and across the u. S. This weekend it was in chicago. Now, katy tur covered the Trump Campaign from day one and in unbelievable he fixated on image. He cant bear looking weak. Few humans are weaker than babies because theyre babies. Katy, thanks for being here. That was deep. I wonder the depth you see with his obsession. Its not just during the presidency. He brought this up on the campaign as well when he was trying to take down marco rubio who for a time was leading in the polls, he kept calling him a baby over and over again. So it is an insult he uses when he needs to bring somebody down a notch. Its like dog catcher in that way. He cant bear looking weak which is what i wrote in the book. At the time when i was writing that he was abruptly he abruptly stopped one of his speeches in raleigh, North Carolina because protesters interrupted so much it made hit hard. I reported that. He got furious and boycotted nbc news because he thought it made him look weak. If a protester got under his skin he doesnt look in controls, hes not a strong person. Its the same way that he i think he views dictators. Hes not a baby. He understands what they do. He gets it. The world is a dark and dangerous place, its a mean place. He said that over and over again. You mentioned him attacking people. Lets show this. We have a bunch of babies running our country, folks. We have a bunch of losers. They are losers, they are babies. What the hell did he think . Hes like a baby. And then he apologized like a little baby. Like a disgusting little weak pathetic baby. It seems like more than a talking point. It seems to resonate somewhere inside him. Its a deep insult. Its what he considers one of his deepest insults, calling somebody a baby. Calling somebody a dog catcher because you cant take them seriously. A baby because as you said theyre weak and cant protect themselves. He thinks if you tell the truth, if you admit that theres nuance to your decision, you are going to look weak but he saw our past leaders as weak and babies because they were unwilling to say what needed to be said. He was the one that was willing to say it. He was the one that was willing to go out and say, im going to bomb the families of terrorists and anybody who judged him for it, said, hey you cant do that, they were weak because he was the one telling it like it is. Lets probe his mentality because you spent so much time with him. Yep. Im not trying to put him on the couch. Sometimes the things that we most revile in others remind us of something were not at peace with within ourselves and bob marley said the biggest man you ever did see was once a baby. And it was a statement about humility. I wonder if and feel free to disagree, i wonder if part of him is actually personally uncomfortable with the notion he was once a baby, that we come from dust and return to dust, that there is a kind of a weakness in that that is human frailty that bothers him. I dont know. And i think that is something that i dont know either. A clinical psychologist would need to discuss it with him but i can say from covering him for as long as i did from interacting with him the way that i did, he has a personal aversion, a revulsion, if you will, to looking weak. And to being somebody who is unwilling to say the mean thing, the honest thing and just to make my point on what he was doing there with the dictators is that hes willing to say what other leaders would not say, which is, yes, i know what they do but its more important i get an arms deal even though that arms deal is the way he describes it is not accurate even in the slightest but its more for him its saying being willing to say im ready to deal with this person regardless of what they do in their home countries because i can theres a transactional relationship that can be had. It doesnt matter what you do, the means justify the ends and the ends are that im going to get a better deal. In fairness a lot of his supporters resonate with that kind of real politic. Before i let you go, we have some more imagery we want to put up on the screen. A salute to her college tour. Folks may remember that, that moment pausing with that bear but we have other ones. Look at this one. Did you deliberately make this a priority on your trip. Do you know why i have such an affinity to bears. My middle name is bear. Why . My family is weird. I never would have guessed you grew up in a weird family. No. No. Of course, im totally normal. Im kidding. Katy bear tur. Thats me. You dont use it professionally. No, i dont because i get enough tur on twitter. I brought the level of intellectual or door and investigate door from this conversation down a bit. We loved having you here. You spent a lot of time around the man who became president and covered that campaign vociferously. Listen, i think donald trump is im not going to get down on the therapist couch but he is a projector and when somebody makes an argument against him he will turn it back around and make that argument against them. Exactly. Doris, come this way. Were out of time only because we love katy tur but have Doris Kearns Goodwin in 30 seconds. Thanks for being here. Well be right back. Were back. Sometimes the most revealing things are not on stage in front of us but are the things just offstage or the background instead of the foreground. Thats how a lot felt about this painting hanging in the white house. Its news tonight because it was caught on camera in that 60 minutes interview with trump, a jaunty piece of fiction imagining him relaxing with republican president s living and dead and its a portrait of partis partisanship that doesnt represent living history considering the reports that neither president bush voted for President Trump let alone drink with him but, come on, its just a painting and compared so the iconic rendering of dogs playing poker, we dont know dogs play poker and know the bushes dont like trump. Why is the image important to a president who otherwise tends to be more rebellious . Partly because our president s define our history and culture which Doris Kearns Goodwin is here to discuss on the beat in a moment. She has had a front row seat working directly for lyndon johnson, thats her whispering there to interviewing president obama when he was leaving office in 2016, historical interview and in leadership in Turbulent Times describes how four president s used empathy, compassion and leadership to lead america through periods of strife that really do make many of todays brawls look melodramatic or downright quaint and talks about fdr leading through existential threats, his inaugural to the most recent inaugural. This great nation will endure as it has endured. Will revive and will prosper. And the crime and the gangs and the drugs and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. This american carnage stops right here and stops right now. Doris Kearns Goodwin, thanks for coming on the show. Im glad to be with you. You started writing this years ago before the current political moment. What drew you to the adversity that pushes great president s to be great . Well, i think i learned even over time from living with my guy, i call them my guys because i spent so much time with them is that when they go through something thats difficult, lincoln nearly has depression that was so deep they took knives and razors from his room but came out of it because he said i could just assume die now but i havent done anything to make any human being remember i lived. Teddy roosevelt lost his wife and his mother on the same day and then feate had dealt an unkind hand. If you acknowledge you made mistakes, you grow. A leader has to grow in office. In politics we talk so much about ideology. You tell this as a story of empathy. Who has it and who found a way to gather it as part of their leadership. If i had to choose one quality so important for a leader and its so missing today, i mean Teddy Roosevelt said the rock of democracy will founder if people in different regions see each other as the other rather than as common american citizens. Lincoln had empathy from the time he was a little kid. Teddy roosevelt did not. Comes from a privileged background but gets into politics and sees decrepit tenements and Police Commissioner wanders the streets at night and developed it. It became natural. Fdr developed it because of polio. Lyndon johnson had it as a young boy then he lost it until he got so much power without purpose and then he had a massive heart attack and decided too how will i be remembered . Once ambitious changes from self to something larger thats when a good leader becomes great. Funny you said that about the application of ambition. Isnt that part of how joseph cam dell defines the hero. The hero is doing something for the world or for some or cause whether you agree or not whereas raw personal ambition is for the self and mentioned lbj. I want to play the famous words he spoke in 1965 that mattered but they werent his words just like in music and culture we see how much a salute can mean. Lets look at that. Yeah. Its all of us who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice and we shall overcome. Thats a critical moment when a leader in power connects to the outside group thats arguing against the government, the Civil Rights Movement was pushing forward. Every big change weve ever had, the antislavery movement, womens movement, environmental movement, civil rights this, was a big risk that president johnson took on civil rights. When he first came in he decided to make his First Priority the passage of the desegregation act. His friends said you cant do that youll be undone and youll be a failed president. He had the courage. If he had only shown it on vietnam but still deserves to be in the pant jheon. When a president does something that fills that larger ambition, they want to continue doing it. Stay with me. You know how some of these artists have riders in their contract like they only have write m ms. I know you only appear with other Pulitzer Prize winners. No way. Its not true. Its a joke. No way. Well bring in another Pulitzer Prize winner, gene robinson. A little pulitzer humor. I dont have one. You both do. Your thoughts when you listen to doris fine history and you as our Current Events person and how does this apply today . Well, first of all, i look forward to reading doris new book and, hi, doris and, second, you know, you talked about you talked about how president s grow in office and one way they grow is that they learn new facts. They ingest information and process information and learn things and grow. And President Trump seems to be, i think, uniquely impervious to information, to new information. He doesnt seem to grow in that way. And i wondered if doris, have we had a president before now who seemed to be so impervious to new facts and who might that be . Well, i dont know. I mean you have to in order to be pervious if thats the other side of impervious, you have to be permeable. You have to be able to acknowledge something you said was wrong or something you believed was wrong and youve changed your mind. But somehow he seems to think thats a weakness. When its absolutely a strength. I mean, lincoln used to say that if i learn something that i did wrong im smarter today than i was yesterday as a result of it. All of my guys were able to do that to be able to say that this is what i thought but ive learned something new. Im here in this office. New things are coming in but somehow its a sense of weakness, thats a real problem. If you cant grow in office youll never be able to be the kind of president that one wants you to be. I dont say this simply because you are a historian here, but many of the great president s youre profiling here were deeply interested in and knowledgeable about where the country was to where it was going to go and you write about how fdr wanted to use this as a pivot point with the idea that it really could rewrite the domestic contract in america which amazingly it did and you contrast that to what im about to play which is donald trump having only the most cursory understanding of reagan. Hell plagiarize the slogans but when it comes to americas place in the world, he does seem genuinely uninterested and that seems like a hindrance. Take a look. I do trust him, yeah. I trust him. That doesnt mean i cant be proven why would you trust him. If i didnt i wouldnt say that to you. Wouldnt that be remember what reagan said, trust but verify. Sure, i know. Its a very but the fact is, i do trust him. With regard to kim jongun, reagan was write but hes going to do the opposite is sort of what comes from that. What you really hope when you get to be president its the most incredible club in the world. Why not learn from the president s who went before you. I mean all of my guys, lbj felt fdr was his hero. Fdr felt teddy was his hero. Teddy felt lincoln was his hero. Lincoln felt washington was his hero. Teddy in the upper right there. He finds donald trump very funny in this fiction. He got that look. If anybody could come today to combat mr. Trump i think it would be Teddy Roosevelt. I mean he was as much of a central figure, i mean he loved to be in the center of attention but wanted a square deal for the rich and the poor, the capitalist and wage worker and had all these pit this. He would be a bull moose challenge would be the right thing for donald trump he was able to have a selfdeprecating sense of humor which you dont see in trump at all. Laugh at yourself when you have to. Doris Kearns Goodwin, i really appreciate you stopping by the beat. I hope youll come back. Gene, great having you. Leadership in Turbulent Times, check it out. We turn to a progressive icon with warnings for donald trump and the democrats as we approach midterm polling, favoring the dems, ralph nad ser here coming up tonight on the beat. My mom was freedom, and my dad, adventure. They baptized me in mud and christened me on rock, so i got tougher. They fostered a love of learning, so i got smarter. Taught me to appreciate the finer things in life, so i became more civilized and refined. Thank you, freedom and adventure, for giving me this rugged, civilized, wandering soul. For giving me this rugged, civilized, Digital Transformation actually what does ithappen . O make do you just flip a switch. And presto your business is magically transformed . Not quite. It takes a groundbreaking company like dell technologies. A family of seven Technology Leaders working behind the scenes to make the impossible. Reality. For instance, were helping to give cars the power to read your mind from anywhere. Were helping up to 40 of the nations donated blood supply. To be redirected to the areas and people that need it most. And were even developing technology to create a whole new vision for the blind. So while you might not see what were doing. What were doing is changing the way we all see the world. Magic cant make Digital Transformation happen. But we can. Lets make it real. Weve hadfor a long time. Is in San Francisco and halfmeasures havent fixed it. Homelessness doesnt just hurt homeless people. It hurts all of us. Thats why were all voting yes on c. The plan is paid for by corporations that just got a massive tax break. Its time for them to give back by helping all of us to fix our homeless crisis. With more affordable housing. Expanded mentalhealth services. Clean restrooms and safe shelters. Vote yes on c. It helps all of us. It was three years ago when donald trump appeared on snl as himself that they predicted what his white house might look like in 2018. Jimmy, how is the economy . Amazing, sir. In the words of our new national anthem, its huge. After your tough negotiations with china you are killing them on trade. Theyre now borrowing money from us. I have no idea how you did it, sir. Well, you know what, i dont have to get specific. With me its just works. Its magic. That was a joke and china is not exactly borrowing yet but there are a lot of numbers showing trumps economy doesnt work for all americans yet. Of course, Trump Campaigned on being a populariist but didnt grasp the word calling himself a popularist. It shows the economy and reducing the influence of special interests actually topped the list for the most important issues among voters in the midterms right now. When it comes to which party they trust on the economy, look at this, voters choosing republicans by a slight edge. So how can liberals invoke the importance of the economy and true populism and actually get democrats behind it, well, my next guest ralph nader has a whole lot of ideas in his new book to the ramparts. Why it isnt too late to reverse and argues these problems are bigger than trump because corporate money has taken over both parties, a point that ralph, the consumer advocate was making all the way back in the 1970s. The issue basically now is whether we can build up enough Democratic Power outside of government to add miss those inside government to uphold their oath of office and perform in the public interest. You were nothing if not consistent. What is new, though, that you want to get across in the book . That the Democratic Party cant defend the country against the worst Republican Party in history. I mean, this is a party, Republican Party on the record voting against children, voting against women, voting against clean air, voting against clean water, if you cant landslide that kind of party, all the way down to the city council from congress to city council, you better look in the mirror and the Democratic Party better look in the mirror. Were about a month away from the election and they talk about a blue wave. You got to have wind to have blue wave. The wind comes from the people. Believing that you stand for something. They havent answered the question what does the Democratic Party stand for and i think if they make a big issue out of raising the minimum wage and they should get in front of the Capitol Steps all the democrats led by nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer and said, we are going to push for livable wages. Its long overdue and the guys at the top are running away with the bank. You know the democrats talk about Voter Suppression and thats real. Purging voters, high complex i. D. S and fooling around with registration dates. But theyre not really pushing for a great get out the vote. 125 Million People who are eligible to vote will not vote in november. Thats a lot of votes. How do you compare that to two parties that have gotten very involved in the politics of personality which barack obama benefited from but ultimately warned against. Take a look. You cannot sit back and wait for a savior. You cannot duck because you dont feel sufficiently inspired by this or that particular candidate. This is not a rock concert. This is not coachella. Is that an Important Message for obama to deliver . It was very important because the democrats are falling into the trap of trump saying lets run against trump. You couldnt have the president easier to run against but that doesnt put bread on the table. They have to got to go down where people are living, working and raising families and will blow the next months election if they continue business as usual and the Democratic National committee headed by mr. Perez who hasnt returned my call for over a year, i have suggestions for him. Why . Because he doesnt want to hear from the Civic Community but hears from the Political Consultants and all the millions that are put in tv ads because they get a 15 cut. It raised the question, have you tried texting him. We have emailed him and texted weve done everything. You look at the next election and see Mike Bloomberg reregistering as a democrat, i imagine you view him as a classic corporate politician. Hes moving parties based on where he may have a political opportunity. Do you think it would be bad for the democrats to have Mike Bloomberg run or become the nominee . No. What about wall street . Wall street is his weakness. Hes for corporate welfare. On the other hand, hes not your routine wall street guy. Hes an entrepreneur and thinks for himself. I think he could shake up the Democratic Party. I think because i have known him and talked with him, i think he rues the day he didnt run four years sglaeg well fit in a break then well shake up the beat with something including you and some special guests weve never done before when we come right back. With something d some special guests weve never done before when we come right back. Something including you ane special guests weve never done before when we come right back. Yes, this is our First Edition of fallback. Ralph nader sandwiched between two friends of the beat, stretch and bob. Here we are. Here we are. I want to play it one more time so were clear. Run it again. [ horn blowing ] sandwich edition. Ralph nader, youre a great sport. You are a liberal icon and you were here surrounded by music icons and i asked you this week who needs to fall back . Fallback, the New York Times, which reviews and profiles ann coulter but declined to remy last books including to the ramparts by seven stories press. I appreciate you naming names, putting the New York Times on blast. Is this a thing where they get hit for being allegedly liberal and yet there are voices, you, noam chomsky own others that are clearly established intellectuals who happen to be progressive that dont get the same attention. Thats right. They printed more war criminals in opeds in the New York Times than they have major piece advocates like noam chomsky, the late howard zen, the editorial page is sometimes pretty good, pretty liberal but by and large its like theyre on the defensive, open it up to the civic progressive community, all the groups that built america and improved its justice. Apparently theyre afraid of the nader sandwich. Among other things which is a new thing we created. Bob, we might need like a rap beat to settle this. Who do you want to fall back . My fallback this time is the train seat hogs with them on air track and whether whether its amtrak, an old lady with 15 bags on the seat instead of putting above. You know, its a holiday weekend. Theres people looking for a seat and you cant find a seat. Or the cat on the train out of borough, the man taking up three seats. The legs spread out over other peoples personal space. On the phone, listening to his music loud, loud. Just fighting for the people. Yeah people need space. My fall back is the new ceo of goldman sachs, david solomon, who now fancies himself, in addition to being a banker of a quasicriminal institution quasi . Yeah, quasi. On gonna hear from ralph on that. He fancies himself as an edm dee jay. I think we have a clip. Lets take a look. This is your expertise. Youre saying bankers being dee jays is a no go, at least this bank. I think people need to leave it to the professionals. Okay. My fall back is john kelly for presiding over one of the least diverse candidates excuse me, cabinets in history. John kelly is the chief of staff. We could put the statistics up here in both parties. The trump administrations got fewer minorities and women and nikki haley only adds to this in the past three administrations. This is vicious. New york cio, i have not wrik about inner mongolia. Bob, what else is on your list . My second one is, back to the train, clearly i dont want a car, right . Own a car, you dont own a suit. Neither do you, ari. Imagine youre ari melber, youre on a flight, on amtrak, you arrive at your destination. Youve been eating garlic aoli. You have stuff in your teeth. You go to the bathroom, at npr, for example, they have reasonable paper towels. And you can listen, you lost your cod. J. Do you want to start over . You can be good to the environment. If this story were a you cant fit your face in a hand dryer. Is all im saying. If this were a first date, it would never lead to a second date. I had a fall back that was disallowed. Dont try to appeal, dont change the subject. Can you help us . Oh, man. My second fall back . My second fall back is the new york city Sanitation Department. They give you a ticket for mixing your recyclables with their garbage. Just this week alone, ive caught ive seen the Sanitation Department come to the curb and throw the recyclables and garbage in the same truck mixing it up. I think thats disconcerting if we cant get recycling at a local level, how are we going to face what the u. N. Calls a crisis which is going to be in 2040, my lifetime. We have a global crisis.
