0 in the anchor chair on the last word, i'll be in ukraine. i'll be retaining to ukraine reporting to mark the grim milestone of one year since the russian invasion. looking more to -- continue to endure and persevere. that's tonight's last word. the 11th hour with stephanie ruhle can begins right now. >> tonight, president biden touting a blockbuster jobs report, while the new book compares the former president to an infamous mob boss. and the pentagon says a chinese spy balloon is still moving over the u.s.. where china might be looking for and what we can do about it. and from everything do going on from politics to netflix's potential tactic to crack down on past words. we are going to break down the biggest news of the week as the 11th hour gets underway right now. good evening once again, i'm stephanie ruhle -- i can't even get my name out. maybe because i'm excited to share the fantastic jobs report that we heard about this morning the u.s. economy added more than half 1 million jobs in the month of january, bringing the unemployment rate down to its lowest point since 1969. and taking a whole lot of experts by complete surprise. numbers will be coming out shortly, we're expecting one 88 to 200,000. wow, wow! whoever took over, congratulations. 500 in 17,000. 517,000. non farmed pay roles, a blast off of a number it came as no surprise that president biden pointed to the jobs report as evidence that his economic strategy is working. president then took that energy to philadelphia where he and vice president harris spent the day talking about their administration's accomplishments. >> democrats, we are delivering. actually, we are delivering big time. just today, president biden announced record job growth. 3. 4% unemployment. >> the strongest in the last two years by a long shot. 3. 4% unemployment. the lowest in 54 years. [applause] the biggest investment in americas infrastructure since eyes in the higher administration state highway system. and by the way, we paid for everything that we did. i tend to get it done. so let me ask your simple question, are you with me? [applause] >> meanwhile, a new book is coming out, the details of the manhattan da's investigation into former president donald trump. in a copy obtained by the new york times, mark, a former prosecutor in that office compares donald trump to infamous mob us, job gaudy. he resigned early last year after da alvin brett decided not to seek indictment of trump at that time. according to the book, they laid out a racketeering case against trump. before he resigned. today, alvin bragg put out a statement saying that this case was not ready at that time. and needed more work. with that, let's get smarter with our lead off panel. jonathan allen is here, senior policy reporter for nbc. and collin -- and my friend harry lippman. former attorney and former deputy assistant attorney general. harry, you knew you're getting question one. what are you expecting? could it impact the investigation going on with trump? >> yes it could. i am expecting some score settling, and i've read enough to know that that isn't going to be there. now, as i read it, no one is accusing brag of bad faith. but the case was, there a big case was there, and they were just out front stephanie. racketeering. that sort of sweeps in everything for 20 years. it basically accuses trump and his whole enterprise of being a criminal business from way back that when. it is going to staying, i think, and moreover. it is going to hurt bragg a little bit. because it won't go in front of the jury. they've been careful to tackle around any grand jury stuff. but there is all kind of stuff in there about the weakness of michael cohen as a weakness. he might be the star witness in the new case that bragg it's putting together. you can be sure that at least in motion practice before the court, some of this stuff is going to show up. it is kind of unfortunate timing for bragg, i mean they wrote a book about the case that he worked on. that happens. and i don't think he did anything unethical. but it is definitely going to cramp his style. they went, trying to get each simon and schuster actually not to publish it. which is a lost cause of course. but he is not happy about it, and you can see why. >> but the fact that pomerantz is comparing donald trump to john gaudy, and going after him for jon gowdy. and bragg said he didn't have a case. he said it wasn't ready. does that mean that when alvin bragg is ready we should expect to hear racketeering? >> my best guess. is no. that is another problem. i think it is already been set up to undermine, by all accounts, he's going after this sort of zombie case. the one really zeroing in on stormy daniels. hush money. now to be fair to bragg, pomerantz broach this in the office but it was shot down by the time that he left. the racketeering theory was already off the table and it can be hard to make a case based on it. but still, there is the possibility that bragg when's and it makes him a snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. because you have this critique out there saying, you could've done racketeering instead of this small potatoes case. it is a rough hand that he has just been dealt. >> as long as we're talking victory, let's talk about the victory lap that the president was running today. this blockbuster jobs report. it's easy to forget when we're dealing with high prices, and we both know that a lot of things cost a lot of money. but when you consider the shortages, the supply chain issues, that depth of the crisis that we were in with the battle with covid. and now where we are, half 1 million jobs were created last month. what does biden news do with this? >> i think we're screaming it from the mountaintop, first of all, he's got the state of the union next week. expect to hear a lot about the state of the new union. and a lot about what he did, he's talking about the achievements he's had, that accomplishments he's had. to make the critical case of what he should be reelected later on. and this jobs report is the best possible news. and let's face it, what do americans carry about in most elections? the economy. he has the best talking point. >> it's not just that we're coming out of covid inflation is slowing, we are starting to see the impact of the bipartisan infrastructure law. remember, billions of dollars around the country starting to lay ground and those are gonna create a lot of jobs. we're seeing it now. >> they are, indeed. and to jonathan's point, i think we can expect president biden to check a lot of this in the state of the union. the economic message for the president has done almost a complete one 80 in the course of the last several months. they've been saying for a while, the policy will show up, they would change things on the ground, inflation was transitory, we didn't see it come all the way down. in fact, rose that another rate hike and we can explore more ahead. so we're not in the clear yet in fact in terms of what people are seeing and what they're seeing in the pocketbook at home. but the president has a really good message to deliver right now. and on top of the bipartisan infrastructure app and the money that is making its way to the communities, it's sending a strong message that the president has been sending about unity. that bill give him a chance to stand alongside mitch mcconnell and say, this is where the money is going, this is the difference it's making in your communities. those are two really strong messages for the president. as he's looking to potentially officially announce his reelection bid. >> we don't hear about a lot of unity within the republican party. i want to talk about house republicans because donald trump came out today saying he totally disagreed with kevin mccarthy who made a statement yesterday saying the officer babbitt who shot -- the officer did his job. how fine a line does mccarthy have to walk right now between far-right members of the house like marjorie taylor greene, donald trump, and then the truth? >> it's like he's dancing on a tight rope that is as thick as a hair strand. this is your talking about walking a fine line. this guy's doesn't have room to move. and what he said -- >> it's made out of dynamite. [laughter] >> that's right, it's made out of dynamite. [laughter] and you know he's got to walk this fine line and he's gonna be criticized by somebody no matter what he says. what he said yesterday was not controversial. donald trump used to say how much you wanted to crack down on -- crime and of course that only place in cases where his supporters aren't sacking the capital where he's basically sympathizing with ashli babbitt who's breaking into the speakers lobby right outside the house chamber where she was shot. there's almost no one in america who believe she was in the right or that the officer was in the wrong. >> certainly not anyone who considers themselves pro law and order. anna, this confuses me. donald trump made a name for himself calling people losers. but what did he do? he lost. and when he lost he prompted his base. and the washington post has prompted today that parts of his base have continued to embrace several losers like kari lake. kari lake was invited by paul gosar to the prayer breakfast. why? why do they hang on to? losers ridges that get you? kari lake and baking a cake? >> it used to be lost an election, you not cough into the shadows for a bed, you lay it low, maybe take on emeritus her pen leadership status. this is not the case in the republican party anymore. you run on the politics of grievance. that's what's been motivating and fueling a lot of the base. and now that defiance is a defining factor. it doesn't matter if you lose because the grievance then becomes, the system was rigged. so i was going to lose anyway and that's why you still need being around. that's why you see someone like donald trump still as the potentially leading candidate for the gop nomination right now because that's what resonates with the base, that's why you see kari lake who lost her bid for the governorship still left the center of that power right now with the party. and that's why you see people like show bolsonaro who lost his reelection bid for president in brazil, also embraced by the republican party right now. he also refused to concede and brazil also saw a violent assault on their congress building and their other government buildings. he also said that violence isn't justified, but he never conceded the election. this is now the base message. even if you lose you lose because the election was rigged. that becomes the new grievance message. >> even if you lose, you're a winner to me. john, same question to you, why would republicans embrace these losers, what does that get you? >> i don't think most republicans are embracing. and by donald trump, who was compared to jon gowdy in this new book by pomrenze has his glory loyalty thing that it's kind of mob like. donald trump is not like john gaudy, he just talked about shooting people, but i think it's one of -- part of the emerita, the -- loved by the base. but again, most republicans want to abandon the losers. we saw this recently interesting mitch mcconnell knocking the rick scott off of a committee, knocking mike lee off a committee. basically saying scott, you lost this election and you try to go your way, and i'm getting rid of. you i think, kevin mccarthy must be able to get rid of losers. but it's impossible to do when trump has a 30% base that is holding the republican party hostage. he isn't committing to supporting the republican nominee. he is going to hold that base as hard as he can. >> and why does he maintain that base? i just keep going back to that. he lost the presidency, while he was president, he lost the midterms. why does he hold on to the base? he's got other options out there. >> i've never seen anyone quite like, him the reason comparison you might say bernie sanders had a very strong base, and when you get below a certain floor, right now donald trump has that kind of incredible loyalty. i think part of it is, it was just being said, there is this grievance, people identify with him, they see him as their champion, and they either believe that he won the last election, or they aren't ready to admit that he lost. it somewhere in the middle. they're so they see him as the future rising -- >> harry, what do you say? >> this is not going to be simple-minded, i'm sure it's a little line of nitro glycerin but just as a prosecutor, just a guy, it is 100% and braised by prominent political officials, of lies. it's not simply -- they are liars, top to bottom. that to me is staggering. >> clearly this is the friday night show that we are leading with a liar. that is not something that you hear very often. it is friday night at 11:13. so we are going to let that one go. harry lippman, i'm not, and john allen who i'm so glad to have here at 30 rock, it gets lonely here on friday nights. i've got john with me. coming up, a spy in the sky. for real. what the pentagon is saying tonight about that chinese balloon flying over the u.s., how worried should we be? later, there's so much to cover tonight with our friday night gap. we're going to get into what in the world is going on in florida. george santos and new possible plans for netflix. you're in trouble if you're using your mothers this weekend. the 11th hour just getting underway on a busy friday night.
