Musk welcome to hell. Tonight, that hailscape is a whole lot worse. As the 11th hour gets underway on friday night. Good evening once again. Im stephanie ruhle. We are down to the wire. Four days before the election day, and with control of the senate and the house on the line. There is no room for error. Theres also no rest for the president on this final campaign weekend. President biden will be trying to get out the vote in illinois and pennsylvania. Hell have company in the keystone state for two former president s, biden will headline a rally with president obama, while donald trump is also campaigning there this weekend. This afternoon, biden said he thinks things are looking good for democrats. Were gonna win this time around, i feel really good about our chances. Were gonna keep this and keep up a seat. We have a chance of winning the house. Thats when im optimistic, i really am. Biden will also be in new york this weekend, campaigning with governor kathy hochul, who is in a surprisingly tight race to keep her job. Shell join me here live in just a few minutes. Voters have made it clear across this country, the economy is at the top of their agenda, and today, we had the latest gut check on that economy with the final jobs report just before the midterms, msnbcs Peter Alexander breaks old. President biden today well cutting the better than expected jobs report 261,000 new hires last month. Even as the Federal Reserve tries to slow the economy, and tame inflation. Folks, our top economy continues to grow and out jobs even as gas crisis continue to come down. Weve got a lot more to do. But fears of a recession still linger. Republicans seizing on the slight uptick in the unemployment rate. The rnc saying, its the worst jobs report this year. Several gop midterm candidates have the backing of donald trump, and sources tell msnbc news that trump himself could officially announce his 2024 bid for the white house later this month. He couldnt out sometime in the future, but what hes really facing in the present, a number of investigations that are not going away. Including one led by the House Committee looking into january 6th. Today was the deadline for trump to respond to that Committee Subpoena for documents. Not surprisingly, that didnt happen. Late tonight, the committee extended that deadline saying this. Weve informed trumps counsel that he must begin producing records no later than next week. And he remains under subpoena for testimony starting november 14th, axios reporting that this same day trump could kick off his 2024 campaign is that. So, stay tuned. Msnbc new lose has learned the january Six Committee also heard testimony today from the secret Service Agents in the lead car of trumps motorcade. The day of the capitol riot. Earlier this summer, former Trump White House aide youll remember cassidy hutchinson, testified the former president lunged at another member of his detail after agents refused take him to the capitol on the sixth. This was also an important day in the seditious conspiracy trial of several key members of the oath keepers militia. The founder of that group, Stewart Rhodes, took the stand. He told jurors he believed that 2020 election was unconstitutional and that he feared the Trump White House would be attacked by anti fascists. Some of those january six rioters had Speaker Nancy Pelosi on their list of targets. She spoke out today for the First Time Since her husband paul was beaten with a hammer by an intruder who is reportedly asking, where is nancy . Paul came home yesterday, its gonna be a long haul but he will be well. And its just so tragic how it happened. Nonetheless, we have to be optimistic, he surrounded by family so thats a wonderful thing. With that, lets get smart with the help of our lead off panel tonight. Josh allen, Senior National politics reporter for msnbc, katie benner, pulitzer applies winning Justice Department for the new york times. And former federal prosecutor, glenn kirschner. John, all the candidates, all the surrogates, all the big guns are out this weekend. What are you watching for. Well, im certainly watching for where the democrats are worried right now. Youre seeing a lot of those big guns go to new york for kathy hochul, whos gonna be on the show later. Democrats are worried about the governorship of new york. That gives you a sense of where the rest of the race is. Joe biden, of course, throwing a lot of blue states at the end of the swing to new mexico, california, illinois, barack obama, the former president of the united states, taking on some of the heavier lifting with swing states a little bit in his last run. But obviously, democrats are very much on defense right now and of course were all watching for former President Donald Trump does as he appears to be very close to making his announcement. But it is . He does donald trump actually want to be president . Because gop establishment, john, they prefer run desantis. It is all of this just a smoke and mirrors show and trump is basically trying to distract us, because were gonna talk about him and mounting his run for presidency rather than talk about the number of investigations closing in on him . I think the oval office is preferable to a jail cell. And i think former President Trump has a lot of investigations as, you pointed out,. I think he enjoyed being president much more than he enjoyed being not president. And every indication for a long time has been that hes going to run. Of course, donald trump does a lot of things without warning. Mixed announcements. He surprises people at times. Everything looks like a no at this point, steph. I believe it when i see it. Katie, what did donald trump do tonight, something totally predictable. He ignored today subpoena, the deadline for documents, and what does he get . Exactly what he wants, another week. Is that not a gift to him . His whole goal is run the clock and get past the midterms. And pray for red wave, thats his jam. What we see from donald trump basically since he became president is that hes willing to push the system to the brink, hes willing to play chicken with whether to regulators, congress, his own agencies. Time and again, he finds that he is willing to go further than they are. In this case, he saying to the january Six Committee, im actually not gonna give you the documents, now its your turn. They give him an extension because there are other options would be to think about whether or not there want to refer this matter to the Justice Department, to see if somebody should investigate, see whether or not hes in contempt of congress, and criminally charge him. Keep in mind, that in and of itself is a process that can take months if not years, we saw how long it took with bannon for the time he stated that referral to the Justice Department, to the time he was convicted. And by then, if the republicans take the house, the whole thing is moot. So, optically, which is better for the committee to say that they continue to want the documents, or go into another no win position by trying to get him criminally charged . Colin, what do you think. That was the committees only option . Well, you know, donald trump is always looking for delay, and here we go again. Hes gotten more delay. And it feels like a sign of weakness, quite frankly, steph. It was a lawfully issued subpoena. They asked for documents relevant to their probe, to their legislative mission. And he basically blew them off. He, you know, is goading them into making another move. And i think the move ought to be to start the mechanism to enforce the subpoena one way or another. Glenn, he doesnt care if he looks weak. He got exactly what he, wanted more time. Yeah, delay as his friend. The question is, will the j Six Committee let him get away with it . Will they play out his Playing Field . Or will they act to enforce their own subpoena . Glenn, explain to me this kash patel situation. Hes now insisting that he only agreed to a limited immunity deal to testify about the classified documents. What its different with that make . You know, i dont credit anything that comes out of cash patels mouth, unless its in a grand jury, under oath. Of course, all of that is secret by law. We dont know what hes actually saying. What we do know, steph, is that the department of justice went before the chief judge of Federal District court in d. C. , and they litigated whether cash patel has a viable fifth amendment privilege against self incrimination. I think its pretty interesting and informative that the judge ruled he does. What does that mean . It means he did something wrong. He likely committed a crime. And if he were to testify truthfully about that, he would incriminate himself. Thats why the department of justice was backed into a corner, they had to grant him immunity and put him in the grand jury. We have to wait to see what he actually said, once he was presented to that grand jury. Katie, its not just one investigation that could get more time that we could wait and see for any results there are a number of cases the doj is working on, that could lead to charges against trump. How quickly after the midterms could we see something happening . I mean, i think that i would not say that we will expect something to happen right after the midterms. I know theres been a lot of pundit saying this, but based on our reporting, investigations are still ongoing. Theyre still trying to get someone like kash patel to go into the grand jury to provide testimony. Hes not the only person who could the Justice Department we need to speak with before they could even consider charges. Not only speak with, but then look at the testimony that they are given. And think about how it actually impacts their case. Does it support their case . Or does it undercut their case . To glenns point, we do not know what he said. If he went in and said i cannot recall several times, he said i believe that i was doing this for xyz reason but cannot be sure, thats not the kind of testimony thats going to really bolster a criminal trial. Bolster criminal charges. And so, the Justice Department still needs to interview witnesses. Still days to go through documents. And it still needs to get the assessment from the National Security committee about the documents that were classified. That assessment is going to tell them what sort of harm couldve been done. Who is impacted. Which agencies. Was the defense department, the energy department, the pentagon . Was it the cia . And the Justice Department also needs that piece of information as it figures out whether or not to charge and how to approach a case. The Intelligence Committee could say, theres some information you can even use in a criminal trial. Theres a lot of work still to be done, so people are saying that right after the election, were gonna see charges against donald trump. I dont know that that makes a lot of sense, given the amount of work prosecutors still need to do. Glenn, lets talk about the oath keepers trial. Within that courtroom today, one of the leaders, Stewart Rhodes, took the stand. What happened. So, i think the big reveal was when his little boy are asked him, sir, do you believe the election was stolen . And he said, i believe, and i have concluded, the election was invalid and unconstitutional. His words. But then the surprise was rhodes went on to explain that, it wasnt because of all this fraud stuff as he put it. But it was because some of the states had changed the voting protocols as a result of the pandemic. So, apparently somebody made Stewart Rhodes the arbiter of what is and is not a constitutional president ial election. He determined it was unconstitutional and he hopefully told the jury point blank i am a constitutional expert. He was pretty alienating in his testimony, steph. But here is what is sort of helps explain. There was some prior testimony about the prior constitution introduced to the jury that elmer rhodes said, listen, if donald trump doesnt invoke the insurrection act, and deny joe biden his win, the oath keepers will take matters into their own hands. Apparently, thats because elmer Stewart Rhodes decided the election was unconstitutional theyll be back on the stand monday, and i think that provides some foreshadowing of what we can expect to hear from him. John, lets go back to this idea that the former president may announce hes looking to run. Does the outcome of the midterms is that going to weigh heavily on this if all of trump s endorsed candidates do so so well, is that just paving the way for him to announce, and if they dont, is that gonna change things . Well stephanie, i think it certainly would like to be able to announce, after candidates he endorsed won in state after state. They want to be able to say that Blake Masters in arizona, and ron johnson in wisconsin, and j. D. Vance and mehmet oz all won their races and helped the republicans capture the senate and get some extra seats. John baldwin up in New Hampshire as well. But even if they dont, you know, ive been talking to people inside of trump world for many months about his plans and his aides have been holding him back from the announcement for such a long time. To try to prevent him from interfering with the midterms too much. For making it too much about him, and hurting some of those candidates. So i think you can expect the announcement soon after the midterms. I dont know if itll be the same day after the subpoena or not. But hes been in this for quite awhile. But if democrats are surprise, you can expect joe biden making a big deal about the Biden Coalition winning and making a big deal out of them winning the senate races. Thats for joe bidens reelection campaign. Security lawyer bradley moss, tweeted this earlier today. Quote, i cannot make this clear enough for trump and his allies. Becoming a candidate again will not stop the department of justice, or fulton county. If they choose to indict. All three probes are deep into the grand jury stage. This is not a cross fire hurricane. Theyre way past that initial stage. Is he right . Yeah, bradley read my mind. Because just because you are not a candidate for office does not mean that the department of justice cannot indict you, prosecute you, convict, you and imprison you. So let trump announce away. That should not stop the doj or georgia, or new york, or any other jurisdiction from moving forward in the criminal investigation. All right, glenn kirschner, katie blair, john allen, thank you all for joining me on this friday night. When we come back, the Critical Issues and the surprising close reelection race echoes nationwide. New york s is here what live next. And later, a tough day for twitter with the chief twig who insist that he had no choice measuring up week one of the takeover. The 11th hour, just getting underway on a very important friday night the race for governor in the state of new york was not expected to be as close as it is. Just four days from election day. But the republican candidate is keeping it competitive by pushing the same kind of issues that other gop hopefuls are running on across the country. He is a trump and desantis endorsed gop congressman from the conservative and of new yorks long island. I am happy to welcome new york candidate , shes running for a full term after taking over for andrew cuomo. Governor, thank you so much for being here. Youre essentially running against yourself. People who are happy, are with you. People who arent, arent. But a lot of people dont know liz. Tell us about your opponent. What do you want people to know about this person . Thank you stephanie. This is something that needs to come out. He was described by donald trump as a brilliant lawyer, you know why . Because he had sent Text Messages right when the question of the president ial election was out there. He sent messages helping to strategize and create the big lie. So you think about the architect of the big lie. Absolutely undermining our democracy. As well as being out there supporting the insurrectionists. Refuelling zing to certify the election. On the same day as the attack on our democracy. And he is so extreme. Opposes womens right to choose, doesnt score a little bit of gun safety legislation, says its tough on crime but he soft when it comes to guns. So, people need to know, that is who is running for governor. Try to hide all of that now. Like oh no, he would never do all these things. Come on voters in new york ares smarter than that. So being so close to trump, you have to wonder. Does donald trump raise money for him . Associate with him . I gave him a chance to say whether donald trump was a great president. And you shouldve seen the list of accomplishments he ticked off in the debate. So donald trump is sizing him up saying, this guy could give him a pardon if he was governor thats the thing i want to talk about. Because especially in the new york city area, its underplayed how close he is to donald trump. If he were to be elected governor, what would happen to the investigations into trump businesses . Could they get derailed . Could tish james get stopped . Absolutely. Tish james is one tough prosecutor. She is a great friend. And i know shes going to go to that. But if there is a conviction . That is when the governor has the power to pardon or grant clemency. Donald trump knows this because he granted a pardon to a guy who went to jail who defeated me for congress, chris collins. He knows how this game is played. Let them do what they want, theyre dirty tricks. Get convicted. But they have a friend in the Governors Office who can pardon you. Thats what Donald Trumps banging on. That is why hes so supportive. And he would need to know that close connection between the two of them, louise eldon was called one of Donald Trumps earliest and staunchest opponents. Thats what should be important to new yorkers. Well, they should be crime is really the rees and this race has gotten so much tighter. He can address crime by making bail adjustments and going after, getting rid of manhattan da alvin bragg. You do not want to do those things. What things would you do . Would you do to address Public Safety . Crime is a problem here. Im so glad you asked me this. Because first of all, he has no plan for a crime. Whats yours . Im in the middle of executing a plan. Last january, my state, january 5th, this is not an election conversion here. January 5th, you can go with the records. I was talking about how people are feeling insecure. We need to reduce crime, get guns off the street. Since ive been governor, we have 8000 more guns off the street. Why . Because i took my police force, state police, and we dont need to give out as many tickets. Lets keep the gun from flowing into our streets. And for the first time in decades, you have the governor of new york. Working in partnership with the mayor of new york city. Remember all the epic battles. I said we have seen january 6th, not that january six, a year later. This past january 6th. I said im here to help you. Let me help get people who are severely mentally ill out of the subways. Lets talk about getting more police officers. A couple weeks ago we had cameras on the subway trains. We started that process. So were already executing, no governor has spent more money as i have in Public Safety in history. Okay, im gonna interrupt you then. Heres the problem. We do not feel safe. You might be working closely with mayor adams, you may have spent a whole lot of money. But i walk into my pharmacy, and everything is on lockdown because of shoplifters. I am not going into the subway. People do not feel safe in this town. So you may have done these things, but right now, were not feeling good. Where worried about San Francisco. Well never be San Francisco. Why . Because we are already making a difference. We already have homicides and shootings down dramatically. Dramatically from what they had been last year. Dramatically and thats the most heinous of all crimes. There are other crimes. Grand theft auto. Why . Because converters, because of the precious metals, are highly valuable. So people are ripping off the converters, just a weeks ago. When i signed into law a bill that would to identify where they came from. So if you cant prove you know the owner of the car . And have serial numbers on it. So were going after the criminals. There are other crimes for sure, i have no doubt about. It all over the nation. So im not sure how fiery one district attorney, one bureau in new york is going to do with the issue across the state, across the nation. This is a nationwide phenomena. It doesnt matter whats happening in other cities, or other states. The reason that people dont feel safe in new york, is why they are starting to say, can kathy be the right governor . It doesnt matter whats happening in San Francisco or , you need to get new yorkers votes. And safety is a top issue for us. I understand that. I took the subway this morning. Im out there with the people, i understand them, i understand the sense of anxiety. And what thats why a part of it is getting people who are civilians ill out of the subways. We dont know if theyre gonna have an episode. They push somebody. Thats the fear of the urn known. We have to get them out of their, were doing it right now. Cameras, youre on the subway. The candidates now know that theyre being marked. Theres a record of it. Thats going to start having an effect. You mentioned the bail loss. The reason that the new york state budget, my very first budget, was nine days late. I won it in on time. But i said im not leaving here until we deal with a repeat offenders. You mentioned people keep taking things off the shelves every single day . The bail laws now cover that. Anything with a gun, the bail laws now cover that. I gave more powers to the discretion of judges and district attorneys than ever before. We made those changes, but they only affect a short time. Do you think you get credit for that . Do you think that you face, whether its conscious or unconscious, sexism by voters . Especially as it relates to crime in Public Safety . New yorkers who are used to these alpha male, marco mann, governors. Or political leaders here. And you are not from new york city. You are a petite, capable woman from upstate. Do you think that people give you enough credit . Im tough is how. Im from buffalo. My father and grandfather were steel workers. Grew up in a big Irish Catholic roughandtumble family. There is nobody tougher than i am. I have been through hell and back. In this job. And i love every minute of it. But there is no one on top for me. If anyone thinks that i am soft on crime, look at what weve been doing. Weve been aggressive about this. So im breaking the mold, perhaps, people havent seen a governor who looks like me. I want to make sure that this becomes the norm. We had the toughness, im a mother. Im actually a grandmother. So this is personal to me when people have that fear. So i got my own toughness, but also that compassion and empathy. Perhaps of those dont have. Thats the combination that i bring to how passionate i am about solving this problem. Only the governor doesnt get their hands all dirty and local police issues. One of you seen that before . But ive been leading with the leaders of not just new york city, syracuse, everybody. What are you doing . Have you use this law . My husband was Barack Obamas ninth state attorney. He i understand how this works. People shun underestimate how tough i am and making sure that our streets are safe. A grandmother, a mother,. Women are out there voting. Daughters are out there voting. Early voting. When we talk about polls, not just in new york, but across the country. We talk about these tightening polls, are you buying that . Because last that i checked. Not too many people answer pollsters when they call. And given all the things that are on the line right now, and the kind of people, the amount of people that are voting early, should we believe these polls . Its so hard to know stephanie because we have so many examples. I have been out of politics since i helped tim russell. Since i was elected. Good for you i was a nerdy girl who loved politics. I was the only girl in the room. I know all this, ive been following pulls all my life. All i know is towards the end they are meaningless. They become meaningless because people arent answering their phones, young people dont respond the same way and the traditional ways of gauging Public Interest are just out the window, and im not sure how you really get a good snapshot other than you work your tail off. Ive been in 14 elections. I always feel like an underdog animal Buffalo Bills fan. Youre always hungry, you work so hard. Does that mean if you and youre gonna jump on a plastic table in the parking lot . I just might do that. Then let me ask, weve been talking about polls for months. Four months republicans have been pushing all types of polls. And raising money off of it. Thats exactly what theyre doing all we have to do is see the name trafalgar. It shows that were neck and neck, or shows that hes beating me today. Our own polls show that thats wildly wrong. But youre making money off of it, youre getting super billionaire donors like ron martyr to dump billions of dollars in negative ads against me to prop up your election because you gave them a fake poll. Democrats are too honest to do that. Were not praying that game. And so, thats whats going on here. I think its having an effect. But i do not care. Im not intimidated by them, their polls, their money. I have my faith in new yorkers. And i know they will do the right thing. All i need to win on this election is democrats turning out. We have enough democrats, but they get complacent. They say shes fine, its a blue state. Thats when you get in trouble. You cannot let that happen. Im calling on new yorkers to stand up, defend your democracy against the trump loving, Climate Change deniers, election denier, abortion denier. Denying abortion rights. Thats whos on the ballot. Time people understand that. Governor kathy hochul, thank you for joining me tonight. I appreciate it. When we come back, more on why we shouldnt read too much into these polls in the final days. And later, were back on to culture war issues to try to scare you but tonight, we say the quiet part out loud. That the big fight lies when the 11th hour continues republicans have flooded the zone with polls, after poll, after poll. Internally, it doesnt look anything like the electric that we have been seeing over the last two tight cycles. And i think that there is more here that meets the eye. Why are they doing this . Its diabolical. And we in the news media are beginning to follow that narrative about a republican surge, and how everything is leading republican. That is just some of what we heard earlier tonight from pollster, democratic strategist, and clearly fashion icon corn and bolger. Back with us tonight, adrian ellerin. She was a senior aide in the biden harris campaign. Adrian, there is always talk about tightening polls, a red wave. I think were forgetting, early voting is really high. Young people are out there voting. Women are out there voting. What are you seeing . Because when i was 18 years old, i was not nearly as enthusiastic about voting as young people are today. Thats exactly right staff, theres so much on the line. I think Climate Change has obviously voted and motivated a lot of voters. But i think im glad that you play this clip from cornell. Number one, were seeing that early voting is outperforming in 22 numbers. 2018 of course was a great cycle for democrats, and we are seeing the early vote and specifically the democrat side outperforming those numbers. Number two, cornell is absolutely right. Mr. Fashion icon is absolutely right. Youre starting to see some of these republican trending polls that are performed by trafalgar, which is why Governor Hochul just mentioned that that, and some of the other right leaning groups are flooding the zone and driving out these averages in the favor of republicans. And raising money off of them. And there is a theory out there that one of the reasons why new york was so close was thats what these republican for polls are doing here. And its driving more money into the state, taking it away. Democrats are spending more money in this state, taking away from potentially other states. Thats stuff says. Yeah, its some pretty dark arts. Sometimes i wish that democrats played a little bit more this dark arts universe. Republicans are. But i think in this race, i think its tied. I dont think its anything as close that were seeing from the polls from the reasons that i just message. I do think this is a setup . Republicans are pushing the polls, theyre pushing the right way. Lets say next week comes, and democrats prevail. Is this is set up for republicans to turn around and, its like in my mind i can hear Tucker Carlson say its all fraud its all fraud i think its a switcheroo i think its a in this case, theyre driving up the polls more to their favor, and skewing them in their favor. And then if the election, if hochul wins by four or five points outperforming what the polls look out. Then they can call fraud, then they can push their election denier. So i think it looks either way for them. Thats a danger that we are in with current election denying, republican party. Every reporter collaring politics is asking republican nominees the same question. Dear, fill in the blank republican. Will you accept the Election Results if you do not win . Yeah. You worked in politics for years and years. Have you ever heard that question before . Is it the trump effect . It is the trump effect. We didnt know what the trump effect was going to be in the long term. We know it was not gonna be great. But i think this is one of the manifestations that not any of us was expecting. We used to run campaigns on the issues. Whether we are going to protect Social Security or medicare. It was a long time ago. Now we have this extra layer of democracy protection, on top of the other issues. And a lot of us have seen kari lake. And that infamous interview that she did on that network. Where she said i will only accept the results if i won. We are in some dangerous times. And its only the beginning. How dangerous . Are you concerned about local violence . Absolutely. I do believe that 99. 9 of voting incidences for people are safe. And they are accurate. But absolutely, i mean youve got some of the oath keepers that are monitoring absentee ballot boxes in the states. Ive been working with some secretaries of states, and in some of the key elections. And they are putting a lot of measures in place. But they are slightly concerned about what happens what can on election day. And what happens depending on each race. How is this more reliable robel when it comes to showing up to the polls. But when it comes to who shows up, republicans lineup. Why is that . I think it just happens. Republicans vote more on election day itself. But democrats do a better job at voting early. I think that democrats are more organized. They think it could, rain or something to do with the kids. Or prevent something from happening. But you know, its an ongoing issue that democrats have to make sure that we simply vote up. And turnout. Because the numbers are on our side, seth. There are more democrats out there. We have a broader tent in our party. But we absolutely have to show up. And im so happy that governor kathy hochul mentioned that. Because we are still a blue state with a very close election. And she is making it clear, guys, you cant sit on election day. Moderates, democrats running out for her. She makes the case that you cannot stay home, cannot stay idle. You have to show up. Gotta show up great to see you. When we come back, exactly one week since his 44 billion dollar twitter takeover became official. Elon musks twitter in total chaos how much worse can . Again when the 11th hour continues one week after elon musk completed his takeover of twitter, the company sounds like it is in complete disarray. More advertisers reportedly pausing spending on the platform. But today he blamed a massive drop in revenue on activist groups. Hes also getting sued on the mass layoffs that began today. Our tom castella has more. It started late thursday as now former twitter employee started learning that they have been laid off. Looks like im on employed yall, tweeted one. Eight months pregnant and have a nine month old. Just got cut off from laptop access. Said another. Amid the layoffs and complaints, he changed his twitter buyer this week to twitter complaint hotline operator. Attorneys are reminding musk that he must give employees 60 days layoff notice under california and lay off law. Our recommendation is that employees be very careful about signing away their rights under the law. Today, content and misinformation monitors. Just a before the midterm election. Musks insist that he is a free speech absolutist. Our next guest predicted that he must be in over his bed. Editor for the verge, n. I. L. A. Patel is an msnbc contributor and host of the decoder podcast. Last friday you wrote welcome to elon. You break it, you buy it. Once again, the farright isnt happy because its not the free for all they would hope it would be. But advertisers arent on the other side. How would you suggest its going . Yeah, i think that elon is really addicted to twitter, his brain is a little poisoned by it and he thinks that everyone else is addicted to twitter and they have to use it, just like he have to use it. That is not true. And so, advertisers by and large are saying, why would we want our brands associated with this amount of chaos . Why would we want our brands associated with massive layoffs that were created just as chaotically as other layoffs in corporate history. And why would we want to be anywhere near this incredible pingponging between the commitment to content moderation and yelling at us because were not and responding to rightwing influencers left and right. I dont understand how he got himself quite in this position quite so fast but it was very obvious that he would do this. While hes making the argument that it is activist groups that are forcing this to happen, advertisers are allowed to spend their money wherever the hell they want. So i dont even understand what this argument is. If they want an argue with twitter . If their consumer brand, they can say im not into it. Him blaming people isnt going to bring dollars into the door . Yeah, i dont think that advertisers are coherent Political Group in america. You cant go around blaming advertisers for things. Every company advertises. Every company does a marketing. What he is really talking about is some of the Largest Companies in the world, some of the largest ad agencies in the world. That very clearly told him in a meeting, we are worried about the stability and the safety, the brand safety of this platform. And he has responded by basically attracting them. And in return saying, im gonna name and shame them. Its gonna be thermal nuclear if they dont return to spending their dollars with twitter. I do not think that that is a logical rationale for a boycott. I do not think that anybody is going to be convinced to boycott pfizer, or volkswagen, or gm, or whoever. United airlines. Because they didnt spend money on elon musk social network. Doesnt make any sense to me. And at this point its kind of desperate. But its also not even a boycott they can say we dont feel like spending our money today. They could come back tomorrow or the next week. When hes working overtime to alienate them and i do want to ask about these layoffs. He said that they had to do these massive layoffs because the company is losing 4 million a day. Is that true . The company is losing money. Its unclear if that amount has truly accelerated. Because elon has taken over. We do know that advertisers were leading the platform, from the day that it was announced that he was taking over. We do have users declining for a long time now. So any criticism of elon is not praise of the former management. Elon has just accelerated a bunch of trends that have long existed in twitter scale. This is a horribly mismanaged company that has gone through a series of ceos who are ultimately confused about what the product was. Or deeply deeply disconnected and distracted. And then he showed up and said, look, ominous flip the table and make it whatever i think it should be. As the worlds number one twitter user. Fine, i think thats maybe an appropriate thing to do. Doing it this way, by insulting everyone. Destroying the culture of the company in a way that might be unrecoverable. And then on top of it, hissing off the money that keeps the place afloat is just absolutely hubris. And i think that he is realizing that he has never had to market. He doest spends any money advertising tesla, right . He has this army offense. Well with twitter what hes got is clients. He has the cmos of the fortune 500. Who all run gigantic brands. And all have power. And spending power. And Client Services require a diplomatic touch that he just never seems to have. Well, were gonna see what happens. He went from being the king of twitter to the owner of it. Its a lot harder. Eli patel, thank you for joining us tonight. I hope to see you soon. When we come back, we save you all the time. The truth matters, but only if you hear it. The preelection day factchecks to keep in mind before you head to the polls you dont wanna miss this. When the 11th hour continues youll be glad that you stayed up for this, the last thing before we go tonight, some election factchecks. The first one is the big one. The big lie, that the 2020 election was stolen from trump. We hear this all the time from gop lawmakers, candidates, and also some members of the rightwing media. All the time. But on a recent podcast, texas republican congressman Derek Crenshaw revealed that behind closed doors, in the days before january 6th, some republicans admitted to him that the election was not stolen. He went on to say that they admitted to making false promises to their supporters. Listen to this and its like, yeah we know that, but were just, people just need their last hurrah and they just need to hear that we fought one last time. Trust me, itll be fine. And i was like, no it wont that is not what people believe in thats not what youre telling them maybe are smart enough to know that, but some people, a lot of people in the political world that are just willing to say things that they knew are not true. They know arent true. And its a huge manipulation. For fact sake, that is a huge manipulation and one with dangerous consequences. Our second factcheck tonight has to do with Critical Race Theory and the republican outcry that is being forced on kids in schools. Virginia governor glenn even set up a tip line to help route this problem out. It turns out, the tip line didnt get many tips. And as viewers say today reports, most of the calls that they did get were for other reasons. Complaints about schedule education, violations, praising for teachers. And concerns about academic rigor and options. The tip line was, no surprise, quietly shut down back in september. It must not have been begun issued as the governor previously claimed. Our final, and perhaps most outrageous and disgusting fiction is actually being spread by some republican candidates its about litter boxes in schools. And you know what . Were gonna let this guy at a trump tower explain more. Students are coming in dressed up as cats, with collars, and leash is on, and ears. And supposed to have litter boxes in the restrooms. I cannot believe i have to say this. But obviously, there are absolutely no litter boxes for students in schools. This specific story caught fire after the tories Podcaster Joe rogan repeated similar false claims on his wildly popular show. But after some backlash, he said that he did some more digging and he came to this conclusion. It doesnt seem that theres ever any proof that they clip the litter box in there. No proof. He pushed a lie. Hopefully, that settles that. And now we do not ever have to talk about litter boxes in school ever again and be sure to tell your friends, this premidterm weekend, the truth matters. But only if you hear it. So listen up and on that note, we wish you all a very good night from all of our colleagues across the networks of nbc news. Thank you for staying up late, i will see you at the end of monday she answered the phone call, her Text Messages. I could see that the windowpane was broken. The glass was on the ground. A valentines day that started wies
