Pandemic, thats a fact. Joe biden spent the day in delaware, meeting with health care advisers. Weve now topped 8. 9 million infections, and weve lost over 2 228,000 of our fellow citizens. The u. S. Remains number one in the world on both counts. The uncontrolled explosion of new cases is straining our hospitals, the number of virus patients climbing about 46 from a month ago. No states are seeing sustained declines in case numbers. Situation particularly dire in el paso, where the number of people hospitalized has more than tripled over the past three weeks alone. And its the president who continues to tamp down the urgency and deny the threat of the virus that is all around us. The safe vaccine is coming quickly. Youre going to have it momentarily, that eradicates the virus, and were rounding the turn regardless. You know that. Weve got the vaccine. I say regardless. Great companies, and quickly ends the pandemic. You turn on television, we have great numbers. We have some incredible numbers. Mortality is way down. And way better than europe and other places. Biden and the democrat socialists will delay the vaccine, prolong the pandemic, shutter your aschools, and shut down your country. The covid tracking project reports today, october 28th, over 78,000 new cases have been reported. Today was top five alltime, which makes this next development all the more ironic. A press release from the White House Office of science and Technology Policy touted the administrations accomplishments and included this section, quote, ending the covid19 pandemic. From the outset of the covid19 pandemic, the administration has taken decisive actions to engage scientists and Health Professionals to understand, treat, and defeat the disease. To put a finer point on it, claiming defeat of the virus as the virus has now reached its peak in these united states. The white house was asked about that earlier today. I think that was poorly worded. The intent was to say, its our goal to end the virus. But the Mission Accomplished style damage was done. A couple of hours later, heard from former Vice President joe biden. The white house science office, this stunned me, put out a statement listing ending the covid19 pandemic as a top accomplishment of President Trumps first term. Infection rates are going up in almost every state in our union. The refusal of the Trump Administration to recognize the reality were living through, at a time when almost 1,000 americans a day are dying, every single day, is an insult to every person suffering from covid19, and every family who has lost a loved one. And speaking to Shepard Smith on cnbc tonight, dr. Anthony fauci offered this grim prediction as to what is ahead for the u. S. This is going to get worse. Because were going more into a colder season, through the fall and into the winter, with the Holiday Season going. We cant just let this happen. Were going to have many more hospitalizations, and that will lead to more deaths. Because Financial Markets and the people who move those markets can see and hear what were reporting this week, the virus is now at its height thus far in our country after all, the markets are reflecting that. Youll note the president isnt bragging about wall street this week on the trail because stocks are getting pummeled. Just today, the dow was down 943 points, a loss of just over 3 , its worst day since june. Well get another snapshot of the economy tomorrow, where the Commerce Department is expected to announce record growth. But it doesnt mean the u. S. Has fully bounced back. Today, trump touted this coming report. Numbers are going to be coming out very shortly, very soon. Gdp and the fed in atlanta just made a prediction, they said 35 . Now, ill take 25 right now. 35 would be many times larger than the largest number weve already had. Gdp, 35 is what they predict. Well see what happens. If the number is a bad number, you dont have to vote for me, okay . You may recall trumps intense push to reopen the economy this spring. The push that remains in effect today. Now, bob woodward is releasing new audio of telephone interviews this spring with Jared Kushner in which kushner talks about the effort to reopen our economy and the internal battle with actual medical experts. The last thing was kyle of doing the guidelines, which was interesting. And that in my mind was almost like, you know, it was almost like trump getting the country back from the doctors. Right . In the sense that what he now did was, you know, hes going to open the open up. And on another front, a big embarrassment for the Trump Campaign last night in omaha. Forget the fact that the rally was largely aimed at picking up a single electoral vote, coronavirus risks aside, after the rally, hundreds of Trump Supporters were literally left in the cold. Some had a three to fourmile walk back to their cars. Over half a dozen were hospitalized. The Campaign Said blocked roads prevented the buses from coming to pick them up. And the early vote is sta staggering. Now over 72 million votes cast with six days yet to go until the actual election day. The bidens voted today in delaware. Amid all that, the Supreme Court tonight declined to block Lower Court Rulings allowing six extra days for ballots sent in my mail in north carolina. They declined to look at another case in pennsylvania. That likely has disappointed trump, who has continued his Disinformation Campaign about mailin ballots. Hopefully the few states remaining that want to take a lot of time after november 3rd to count ballots, that wont be allowed by the courts. The biggest problem we have is if they cheat with the ballots. We have governors, democrat governors, that are players, wise guys. Wise guys. Lets welcome in our three veterans for our leadoff discussion. Jonathan lemire, alexi mccammen, and stephanie rhule, the anchor of the 9 00 a. M. Hour on this network. Not a wise guy among them. Jonathan, because of your beat, im going to start with you. The Trump Campaign is telling us 11 rallies in 7 states over the closing 48 hours, and there is this quote tonight from the new york times. As a political matter, the president s approach amounts to an obi wanlike attempt to wave his hands and tell voters that theyre not experiencing a pandemic that is tearing through their neighborhoods and filling hospitals. Jonathan, do they have it about right . That they do. The president has never seemed more disconnected from reality than he does right now. Day after day, rally after ral ril rilally, he suggests the pandem is behind us, and the vaccine is a moment away to save us. This is indeed a surge across this nation, virtually every state seeing huge numbers of new infections. A third peak, if you will. One that comes at the worst possible time, of course, for this president. As he makes his final case for reelection. And its one hes making, frankly, in these hot spots. He was in wisconsin yesterday, a state that is having massive problems with Coronavirus Infections. Michigan, too. And other states that have had the problem. And that shows you what trouble hes in, his itinerary. Hes just throwing everything at the map, scattershot, trying to recreate 2016, when he drew an inside straight. Some believe he should be focused on the sun belt, and pour the rest of his resources into pennsylvania. He needs pennsylvania to get across 270. But he hasnt limited it, hes been in the upper midwest, hes been to New Hampshire. I was with him there on sunday, and, yes, even nebraska, looking for that one electoral vote. All the hallmarks of a campaign that doesnt know where its going. Alexi, any depiction of the democrats would have anxiety markings all around them, theyve seen this before in 2016. What is different for democrats this time around . Thats the thing. All the conversations im having with dems, you cant talk to democrats who are heartened by any of the polls coming out about joe biden leading by double digits. Theyre so paralyzed but what happened in 2016. But the facts are so different than what we faced in 2016. And something i cant help but think about as voters are making their decision, as over 70 million have already voted, of course theres a lot that is already baked into the cake. If you support President Trump, you probably dont care about how he talks about the coronavirus. But no matter who wins, theyre going to have to deal with the pandemic immediately. Its probably going to be in one of its worst phases, in the wintertime, as we see cases spike around the country. Theres not a single state in the country that has this thing under control. Yet President Trump continues to criscross to states being crushed by the pandemic, economically and otherwise, without acknowledging that reality. While President Trumps allure and personality and tell it like it is style was appealing to voters in 2016, a big thing that is different in 2020, i hear from voters who took a chance on trump in 2016, have switched to biden because theyre souring on the personality traits that drew them to him in 2016. Theyre no longer fun or appealing when theyre dealing with a life or death global pandemic. Steph, what is happening with the markets and how does this differ from the usual preelection market anxiety . This is quite different. The markets have woken up to the fact that this Health Crisis is directly linked to the economic crisis. The markets cant thrive when we dont have a National Plan to deal with the coronavirus. And you look at the gdp, you know that tomorrow, you led the show with it, the president is going to say were back, baby, with the greatest economy ever. Thats not the case. We have seeing improvements. We are on the road to recovery. But even if we get 30 , 35 gdp, which would be positive, its far from saying were back. That would be 50 better. And because the president is overstating this, thats why girls like me have to stay up until 11 00 p. M. At night and talk about this with you. For the millions of people that are still out of work, for 1 in 5 Small Businesses that are closed for good, and people that arent getting another stimulus check or enhanced unemployment, theyre not intending big, and that will drag down the economy going forward. Jonathan, a slew of grievances from the president today. He trotted out nigel farage. He has nothing to do with arizona and everything to do with the brexit movement, which was quietly but lustily supported by russia. What do downballot returns think of a Closing Argument that includes a guy from the uk in arizona . I can do you one better. In 2016, i was at a rally in jackson, mississippi, and farage was at that one. And its an unusual one. He was given a lot more time to speak than the Republican Senatorial candidate, martha mcsally. The president said, get up here, hurry, and she spoke for one minute. There is a lot of concern that the president is in trouble, and theyre nervously watching as they fear they could lose control of the house, of that house of congress. And in fact, the democrats may for the first time in a decade control all of washington if biden is able to win. It speaks to a lack of defining message, a Closing Argument for the president. Every night he says a vote for him is about the economy, the trump recovery. Hell talk about the gdp tomorrow, no doubt. And if you vote for joe biden, thats for socialist policies and a recession. But thats drowned out by grieve van vances, and its a stark contrast from 2016. We remember that campaign being chaotic. But he largely put twitter aside, and hammered home a few key messages, immigration, trade, alleging corruption by hillary clinton. He made those arguments clear every night. This time around, hes not at all. And the strong arguments are lost in the noise and fog. Alexi, lets talk about the wing of the Democratic Party that likes to call themselves progressives. They dont always seem like beating donald trump is their number one goal. They do often supply fresh ammunition to this president , witness just how much he talks about the squad on the road. Its red meat at rallies. How are they viewing this election right now . I just recently interviewed congresswoman ilhan omar, and she has been the target of some of these attacks from President Trump. But the thing that im thinking about, another big difference from 2016 is that progressives are largely tabling their internal criticisms against their nominee this time around, which they didnt do in 2016. And the other thing is, as President Trump tries to use these folks as a political lightning rod to brand biden as a socialist, thats just not what voters know and believe about joe biden. Hes been in public life and service for so long, people got to know him decades before the squad was even a thing. Thats not really sticking with him. And we see the way joe biden directly counters the attacks headon, saying im the guy who beat the socialists, he beat Bernie Sanders in the primary this year. And people dont view biden as a socialist or a radical leftist like they might view aoc or omar. Thats just not joe biden. Stephanie, i have saved for you a little bit more of the new audio released by bob woodward. His conversations with Jared Kushner. On this day, there were just 77,000 souls dead from the coronavirus. Heres the recording. Look, i really do believe that hes passed the competency test on the execution. I think that, you know, kayleigh said he said in the oval office, you know, in some ways its better this way. Before people took for granted how great you were with the economy. Stephanie, is your takeaway from that, the noted Health Expert making the point that its a better look for donald trump with 70,000 dead on may 8th going into the pandemic with his position on the economy . Well, lets think about it. Since then, weve got well over 100,000 people additional dead, and 8 Million People who are not dead, but theyve slipped into poverty. Kushner is obviously dead wrong. But this isnt a good look for the president on the economy. I take you back to the markets. Weve spent trillions of dollars in stimulus. The fed has bought up every stock, bond, everything under the sun and still the markets are tanking because the president didnt create a cohesive plan to stop this pandemic. What will happen, were already seeing tighter restrictions. In the city of chicago, there will be no inrestaurant dining starting friday. No bar service. We could see more and more restrictions and possibly shutdowns as we get into colder months. Thats devastating for the economy. Do you know anybody going on christmas break on a plane . That doesnt help the economy. I dont know anyone, and i dont know anyone who knows anyone. Thank you very joining us. Jonathan, alexi, stephanie, thanks for being here. Coming up, as the early vote continues to pile in by the millions every day, a closer look at one of the swing states biden is hoping to take from the trump column. Two veteran Campaign Strategists are here. And later, if this one state was a country, it would have the highest Coronavirus Infection rate per capita in the known world. A president who doesnt divide us, but unites it. A president divided by science, reason, and facts. A sampling of the candidates closing messages with less than a week to go. On saturday, obama will be campaigning with biden in michigan. New polling gives biden an eightpoint lead there. One poll has them up by seven. In wisconsin, biden leads trump by 17 points. Its a lot. Back with us again, robert gibbs and lonnie chen, Research Fellow at the hoover institution. Former senior official with the Old Department of health and human services. Gentlemen, good evening and welcome to you both. Mr. Gibbs, im psyched to hear that normal life is coming back. I would like to hear a target date on that. But the waiting is over. Where do you put this race as f 11 25 50 on wednesday night . I think its very different than 2016. Biden is a popular candidate. His favorability is positive. Donald trump is battling a negative job approval. And quite frankly, its joe bidens race to control at this point. There are a lot of states that hes added into play. Places like georgia and texas and iowa and ohio, which were not really on the map just a few months ago are now places that are not only on the map, but are seeing visits by the former Vice President. So if you look at this race, it is joe bidens to lose right now. I think hes in the lead. And i think youre going to see a pretty confident campaign over the next few days working hard to get its vote out and make sure they dont have any problems with mailin ballots or surprises with any of those things. All right, folks. You heard it from mr. Gibbs. Well hold him to it. Lonnie, from the gift that keeps on giving who we call bob woodward, i have another piece of audio for you from his interview with Jared Kushner. You have a disproportionality between what issues people are vocal about and what they really care about. I dont think its even as much about the issues. I think its about the attitude. So lonnie, you heard what passes for the modern day harry hopkins. If this was indeed a hostile takeover, and i presume you concur with that, whats next . I agree. I think it was a hostile takeover. If you remember after the 2012 campaign, the Republican Party conducted an autopsy. And the autopsy of the 2012 concluded the Republican Party had to be more inclusive, more diverse, it had to campaign in communities that traditionally it had not campaigned in. In 2016, we got a campaign who went in a very different direction. The idea of a hostile takeover, and the idea of the Republican Party looking very different now is true. But what happens next, a lot of it depends on what happens next tuesday. I think if trump loses on tuesday, its going to be a significant battle between different parts of the Republican Party, different pieces of it. Some of which want to continue elements of the trump agenda, but i do think it will be fascinating to examine what happens to the party, and whether it hews to the 2012 autopsy line, or that which President Trump has taken over the last few years. And do you think trumpism survives . Tom cotton stopped by New Hampshire, governor Christie Noem of south dakota, while people are dying of a coronavirus spike in her state, shes in New Hampshire thinking she might be an attractive republican candidate, maybe, in 2024. But what is the chance that some kind of newly constituted party base says, oh, no, no, we remember what you were like in the trump years . We have to be careful when we talk about trumpism. There are many different elemen elements. Is it trumps attitude, or the embrace of trump personally, or elements of the trump agenda . I think very much there are elements of the more populist agenda, working for working class whites, those who have been displaced by trade, i think that probably sticks around. But there will be a huge fight over whether the attitudinal elements of trump will stick around. Theres no question its going to be a significant intra party battle. Mr. Gibbs, im coming at you after this break. When we come back, a viewers guide to the critical downballot vote. Its an important time to save. Not clear what polls the minority leader is referring to when he talks about becoming majority leader. The polling analysis website 538 gives democrats a 75 chance of controlling the upper chamber, the u. S. Senate. Still with us, robert gibbs and lonnie chen. And i want to show you trump today with martha mcsally. Remember, this is a woman who has signed over, as have many members of the u. S. Senate, her political life to trump and trumpism. Shes fighting for her political life in return for this. Martha, come up, just, fast. Quick. Fast fast, come on, quick. You got one minute. One minute, martha. They dont want to hear this, martha. Quick, quick, quick. Lets go. Im coming. Thank you, President Trump. Robert, im tempted to ask how he treats the people he likes. And what downballot races are you watching, how confident are you that the control of the u. S. Senate for starters will shift. Look, i think the races that are watched, that you want to watch here, the races like arizona, which you just talked about. North carolina, colorado, maine, obviously alabama. Its going to be a contested race. Within that top tier set of races, right now you would say the democrats, as many of the polls do, are slight favorites to control the u. S. Senate after election night. They need to pick up three seats, net three seats and win the white house to have the Vice President to break ties. Obviously, owning the white house and not owning a majority of congress is a lot less fun than you might think it is. Theres going to be a real push. And when you see Vice President biden in georgia, where there are not one but two senate races on the ballot, when you see them going to iowa, thats about making races close. Its also about taking those endangered Senate Republicans that as you mentioned have tied their fortunes to President Trump, making them pay in a place and in a state where that senate race may flip. The challenge is going to be in a world that we live in now with far fewer split ticket voters, in 2016, the winner in the president ial race in a state, that same party won the senate race. So youre going to have to find some coalitions potentially in places like in iowa, or even montana, that you might have to find a different winner on the president ial side and the senate side. But right now, democrats are slight favorites to control the senate. Lonnie, what races are you going to be watching . Well, i think georgia, iowa, arizona, those are interesting races. Georgia, the two senate races in arizona in particular, you know, really the big question there is, has demography caught up to the Republican Party . Looking at the change in suburban populations, the increasing diversity in both arizona and georgia. Two states that have been reliably republican for many years. If we see the arizona race go to the democrat, if one goes to the democrats in georgia, those are the most interesting races. Not necessarily even just for this election, but going forward, for the next several cycles, as the Senate Continues to be a battleground over these next many years. It all hearkens back to the gop autopsy you mentioned. Lonnie, robert, a pleasure. Thank you for being with us. If we dont do those things, it may force officials to have more draconian measures. Cases will go up if we dont make a change. A stark warning from a member of what is still nominally the White House Coronavirus task force. Even as the president demands the country lift restrictions. Covid19 cases are rising in almost every state. Hospitalizations are surging across our country. In denver, the city again tightened restrictions. The mayor warning stay at home orders are next if things dont turn around. In north dakota, covid19 hospitalizations hit new highs just today. As we mentioned earlier, one analysis says if the state was a country, it would have the worlds worst confirmed covid19 outbreak. Indeed, for more, we welcome to the broadcast, dr. Michael lebeau. Hes been a practicing physician for over a decade. In plain english, what is it like in north dakota tonight . Its busy. Were full. But i think overall, health care, as we work together, we feel pretty good where were at. As you look at our numbers, were getting a little bit better news. You look at our 14day rolling average, its about 11. 1 positivity rate, up to 11. 4 over the last seven days. Our hospitals, i think, continue to be challenged from a capacity standpoint. But we have not had to ration any care, we feel comfortable with staffing ratios yet. But its a challenge. Could you make a case that november is the new february, and by that i mean, i think theres widespread agreement that we frittered away february, we wasted it, we lost all that ground through mismanagement. And minimizing the approaching virus. Now, we have that same sense of foreboding, like were about to enter another phase, another chapter. Do you get that feeling . Yeah. I think we all have to acknowledge the rise in the cases, and the challenges that it can bring. I dont think the rate of rise is sustainable. I think as we sense as health care providers, weve worked together, we feel comfortable where were at. But to continue this rate of rise, i dont think is sustainable. I think an interesting thing is, i think its sinking in here in our state. In all of our major cities, we have mask mandates put into place. And i think people are starting to really speak up for safety. I want to play you something dr. Birx said about your state. This is back on monday, i hope you can hear it clearly. Well discuss it on the other side. Over the last 24 hours, as we were here and in your Grocery Stores and in your restaurants and frankly even in your hotels, this is the least use of masks that weve seen in retail establishments of any place weve been. And we find that deeply unfortunate because you dont know who is infected. And you dont know if youre infected yourself. So, doctor, thats a hell of a thing to say about your state. What do you chalk that up to . Is that red hat political pressure . I dont think so. I think if you look at just the spread of the virus, obviously, you know, you look at new york city and what they went through. It became very real. I think our cases were slow to spread. I think maybe we got a little bit lax in our personal responsibilities. Just thought maybe it would dodge us. And we had a sense that being a rural state, maybe distance gave us enough protection. I think thats probably where were at. Yeah. Its been said by people smarter than me that this virus does not respect rural, urban, or state lines. Doctor, thanks for joining us and good luck with the fight in north dakota. Coming up, our friends in new orleans hit with another major storm after the hurricane made landfall tonight. Transitions. Louisiana got hit by another hurricane tonight. Its already been a record Hurricane Season for that state. Its never before been hit by so many named storms. This season has left coastal communities there torn up. Our friends in new orleans have largely avoided getting hit until now. Sadly, tonight it was their turn. There you see it. Hurricane zeta made landfall on the louisiana coast as a category 2, sustained winds at landfall, 105. There is widespread damage and flooding. We wanted to show you some of the coverage wdsu in new orleans has been putting on the air tonight. Theyve been covering this huge story on a rolling basis. Heres some of that from the hour weve been on the air, as the storm rolled through new orleans. Were here right off of wright avenue, close to the oakwood mall where there has been a partial collapse to an Apartment Building along the 200 block of wright avenue. Were told this is a result of zeta making its way through louisiana. 2,500 residents are displaced as a result of this. Were told all are currently being sheltered by officials. This is because of the heavy rains and winds to hit this evening in jefferson parrish. A good bit of residents are still without power. About 75 of residents, last time we checked. But officials tell us at least one person had to be treated for a puncture wound. But it could have been much worse, and we will continue to keep you updated. Not far from where hurricane zeta made landfall, you can see some of the damage behind me. A huge tree is being moved out of the road. One of many that fell during this storm. Power outages across the area, water in peoples yards, and a lot of trees down. Some people who evacuated earlier today have been trying to make their way back to their homes now that the storm has passed. Theyre running into obstacles like these. A gentleman cant reach his o home, and he has one concern pecan trees. The roots dont go out as far, so theyre not as in the ground. Oak trees are pretty strong, they just throw branches everywhere. But people with pecan trees, im sure they have some that are knocked down, for sure. Its scenes like this one and the one that that gentleman fears with the trees down on his property that a mandatory curfew is in effect for the parish until tomorrow. And the storm moves like a rocket on up through the seaboard. Theyll awaken in new orleans to clear skies, though windy. This is supposed to end up as a reason system off the new york tristate area off of new england with snow wrapping around behind it. So a fastmoving and potent storm system. Coming up, what its like on the road, where facts are never allowed to get in the way of a good story. Of a good story eliminate the guesswork with the smart cook system. Hes running against hunter biden, the news media, and an uncontrolled pandemic. He introduced a british politician in arizona, as one does. Late today, he got to his antimask routine. In california, you have a special mask. You cannot under any circumstances take it off. You have to eat through the mask. Its a right . And they dont realize those germs go through it like nothing. They look at you and say, thats an easy one. Ill go right through with the food. And when you have spaghetti and meat sauce, that mask you look like you got into a fight. Okay, not true. But he was on a roll. And over the past few days, there have been numerous reminders that especially when it comes to the weather, its really all about how it affects him. Im doing three, four of these a day. You think thats easy, right . We just left wisconsin. It was cold. Michigan, it was cold and raining. Its freezing and its raining. And the rain was going sideways, like, one of these jobs. I mean, im standing here freezing. At least youre down there with each other. Im all up here and that wind is blowing. And im sitting in the hottest sun ive ever felt. This is hot. Youre going to see me tomorrow, im going to look like a lobster. Youre going to say, look what we did to him.
