Administration. That leaves exactly seven days to go until election day. Weve now entered the most critical part of this race at a time when the coronavirus is at its peak thus far across our country. Donald trump and joe biden have now the final week to amplify their messages and get out the vote. Youre going to see a red wave like theyve never seen before, and they saw a very big one. This is going to be bigger and they know it. Its going to be beautiful, and its probably going to start it doesnt have to start on tuesday. It could start earlier, early voting. Time and again throughout our history weve seen charlatans, the conman, the phony populist who sought to play on our fears, appeal to our worst appetites and pick at the oldest scabs we have for their own political gain. We can restore our soul and save our country, and i know we can unite and heal this nation. Stay empowered, stay optimistic, stay united because you too have a sacred duty. The duty to vote. Today the incumbent president traveled to the upper midwest to defend his 2016 wins in michigan, wisconsin, nebraska. Biden was focused on expanding his reach. He made two stops in georgia, a battleground state that hasnt gone for a democrat since clinton in 92. First Lady Melania Trump and barack obama also pitching in to help campaigns with appearances in pennsylvania and florida. Voter enthusiasm driving massive turnout in early balloting. New data from nbc news and target smart showing nearly half of all voters who cast their ballots in 2016 have already voted. Then theres the reason for all the early vote. The uncontrolled pandemic. As we mentioned the final week of this election is unfolding as the number of coronavirus cases is now soaring across our country. Nbc news putting it this way tonight, quote, infections are spreading across the United States at the fastest rates since the start of the pandemic. And a new poll reveals a majority of results reveal they know at least one person whos been diagnosed with covid19. The u. S. Has been reported more than 500,000 new cases over the past week. One analysis from the Washington Post notes that trumps Reelection Campaign hinges on having his supporters ignore the pandemic. The ap notes the obvious. This virus is particularly intense right now in the states trump needs most. That would be the upper midwest. Nevertheless trump presented a very different picture of the pandemic during his rallies today while president obama offered yet another searing critique of trumps handling of the virus while campaigning for biden in florida. Were testing everybody. In many ways i hate it. In many ways i hate it. We test everybody. There are other countries that dont do testing and they show very few cases. Its a very simple thing, but overall its good to have the testing. We find out where it is and theres a lot of things. But they use it to make us look bad. On november 4th youll hear its getting better, its getting better. You watch, no, no, theyre doing heavy covid because they want to scare people. Were rounding like this race crowd, its perfect. Were rounding the curve. We will vanguish the virus. Hes turned the white house into a hot zone. More than 225,000 people in this country are dead. More than 100,000 Small Businesses have closed. Half a million jobs are gone in florida alone. Think about that. Whats his Closing Argument . That people were too focused on covid. He said this at one of his rallies. Covid, covid. Hes jealous of covids media coverage. If he had been focused on covid from the beginning cases wouldnt be reaching new record highs across the country this week. This afternoon we also heard trump ramp up his attacks on Kamala Harris. Stoking fears about the possibility of a harris presidency should any harm come to joe biden. If he gets elected three weeks into his presidency theyll say, kamala, you ready, lets go. Thats why theyre talking about the 25th amendment, right . Three weeks and joes shot, lets go, kamala. You ready . Meanwhile weve learned the Trump Campaign was hacked briefly tonight, seized by hackers demanding crypto currency what they threatened to be the release of dirt on the president and family. The Washington Post reporting that during trumps first term he has directed millions of dollars from us, u. S. Taxpayers and from his political supporters, funneled them into his own businesses. The New York Times also on the board reporting the federal income tax records show trump had nearly 300 million in debt forgiven within the past decade, most of it related to his trump interalgs hot International Hotel and tower in chicago. And a federal judge has denied the justice departments effort to step in and shield trump from a defamation lawsuit brought by magazine columnist e. Jean carol, when he told white house reporters she made up the rape story. The ruling keeps her lawsuit alive. Its a lot. Were joined by our lead off discussion group. Philip rucker, pulitzer prizewinning bureau chief for the Washington Post, coauthor carol leonnig. And nancy cook, and a. B. Stoddard. Good evening and welcome to you all. Phil, wriem going to start with you. By dint of your beat, what are you hearing from especially inside this campaign . And i ask noting that theyre in nebraska going after a single electoral vote a week out from the election. Well, what we can expect, brian, between now and election day is the president to ramp up his travel. Hes look at doing two, three, four even more rallies a day between now and tuesday. And thats because hes on the defensive right now. Hes behind in these polls. He appears to be losing a number of battleground states according to virtually all of the data weve seen in recent weeks. And he thinks by getting out there, by having big rallies, by exhibiting more energy than former Vice President joe biden he can make up that lost ground. Hes going to be heading out west in the next day or so, and we can expect him to be sending considerable time in a couple of states that his Campaign View as essential, and those include pennsylvania and florida first and foremost. Nancy cook, ive read your reporting on this topic. The president was a coronavirus denier from the start. Is it any surprise that he is telling a different story to rally audiences than we can all see and read about going on around the country . Well, i think the difference is that early on in the pandemic it wasnt something his own white house and his own family had experienced. But as you remember in early october the president got coronavirus, the first lady, a number of the president s senior staff this week over the weekend there was an outbreak in the Vice President s office. And so having gone through these two outbreaks in the white house it still hasnt really changed the president s attitude towards it. And as cases are spiking in the midwest, rural areas and a number of battleground states the president needs to win were seeing him basically say that covid is not that big of a deal, vaccines are on their way. Hes telling people theyll survive like his family did, thats really his Closing Argument that covid is something that is bother and something that is an invention of the media rather than really putting forth a National Plan or an argument about what his administration would do to fight it as cases do spike heading into the winter. So a. B. , thats the coronavirus. Lets talk about the fact the president depending on the poll is 20 points under water where women voters are concerned. And please join us in watching a mash up of how hes trying to remedy that. This will not be the first woman president. They have like aoc plus three. She has no clue. She has no clue. Did she go to college . Tell me because i dont know. Ivanka, shed be very happy just being at home with the kids. Crazy 60 minutes, wasnt she rude . She just kept asking me questions. Fire coming out of her eyes. They were talking about suburban women dont like donald trump. I said i think they do, i think they do. Were getting your husbands back to work. Were going to do great, and i love women and i cant help it. Theyre the greatest. I love them much more than the men. Much more than the men. So a. B. , that ought to sew up the womens vote. Its really hard to believe the way that the president describes this group of voters that he has lost that is truly going to sink his party if more of them vote democrat after the midterm elections next week when the votes are tallied. As joe biden says, he believes that suburbia is filled with house wives who are white, who live in big houses and do not work and are afraid of cory booker, apparently. The senator he continues to say is going to come put a Housing Project in their neighborhood if biden wins election. These people are working their lives off. Theyre in the middle of a pandemic. He says today were getting your husbands back to work. They did not all go to elite colleges, these women in suburbia he keeps speaking to. There are people in his own coalition, and hes speaking to them like hes in another time, in another country. In the middle of his cheap act, you know, attacking dr. Fauci, telling them what they know about the pandemic, their whole life is on zoom and they cant have holidays with their grandchildren is not true, speaking to them like theyre stupid. And its going to be amazing to see what that does not only to the president s numbers with this sector of the electorate but what it does all the way down the ballot when the votes are counted. Phil rucker as a thoughtful guy and accomplished author i figure you could handle a question on the intersection of journalism and politics. As we mentioned these twentytwo business stories out today, your paper on the dollars the president funnels into his businesses. The New York Times on the chicago project, which it occurs to me is the real estate job that introduced american viewers originally, and my question is do stories like this with Everything Else going on in the middle of the pandemic move the needle or bromide alert, is that cake baked . Well, brian, for 61 million americans that cake is baked, right, because thats how many people have already cast their ballots in this election in early voting. But these stories are important, and it reason youre seeing them come out now is because they take a lot of time and they take a lot of investigative resources at the Washington Post and the New York Times to get them to get that reporting together in a point its ready for publication. So it happens these stories are ready now, its right before an election, but its important for these papers to share them with the public and for the public to read them before the election. And the New York Times, by the way, has been publishing over the last several weeks a series of really important stories about the president s finances because theyve been able to obtain copies of his tax returns going back many, many years. Whether that persuades any voters to change their minds in the election im not sure. I suspect, you know, many of the americans who would be outraged that the president has paid so little in taxes or has come up with all of these nebulous business schemes probably are not supporting him to begin with. But the reporting is important. And that piece in the Washington Post which is just so striking because it revealed the extent to which the president has used the government to pad his own businesses all the way down to charging the government to pay for his drinks. No question the work has to go on. And in my book journalism is a huge part of the story of these past four years. Nancy, is there anything turning back to the campaign, anything about bidens travels, bidens strategy that is kind of microtrolling the Trump Campaign . Anything that worries them based on what they see on the other side . Well, i think that we saw today, you know, biden was in georgia, basically if the democrats see a real opening in georgia which really has been a republican strong hold, so i think its interesting there. And right before we came onair, the Biden Campaign announced the former Vice President would not be campaigning tomorrow. He instead would be meeting with advisers and getting briefings on covid and meeting with Health Officials. And i do think that was some aplus trolling from the biden camp, you know, as trump is spending the week holding these rallies with little social distancing and no masks and decrying Health Officials and trying to make hunter biden a thing and sort of downplaying covid, biden is really trying to contrast with him and trying to say im focusing on the pandemic, and im going to make that a huge priority if i am elected. So a. B. , over to capitol hill we go where an inexplicably bruised, bandaged and battered Mitch Mcconnell has given us a rare quote for him. Quote, at the risk of tooting my own horn look at the majority leaders since lbj and find another one who was able to do something as consequential as this. The this hes talking about is the fact theyve just seated their third justice. Donald trump has now appointed fully one third of the u. S. Supreme court. The question to you, a. B. , with the court completed any worry within the gop about what might be fixing to happen, what might be fixing to change about Mitch Mcconnells title and that old phrase about pay backs comes to mind. Look, republicans told me before the midterm elections that kavanaugh was worth losing the house over. Republicans are also of the same mind in 2020 that getting the sixth seat on the court because the court is almost forever, and barrett could serve for 40 years is probably worth losing not only the presidency but the senate majority. This has been a goal of Mitch Mcconnells for a very long time. President trump not only would not have three Supreme Court justices but 220 federal lower court judges. The fastest and Largest Record since the carter administration. Just a stunning legacy for mcconnell and for president trump. And it is likely to boomerang and free up a lot of republicans to vote for joe biden because they believe theyve gotten all they can with these three justices. But a lot of republicans have given up a lot in the trump era to get their tax cuts and these judges seated. And theyre very pleased with Mitch Mcconnells record. As we like to say regularly around here all of it has consequences. Phil rucker, nancy cook, a. B. Stoddard, greatly appreciate it. Coming up, as someone put it to our own Nicolle Wallace today, this is your fathers 2016. Democrats are seeing hope in some unlikely places and the early vote is remarkable. Two of the best early strategists in the game are here to talk about key republican strong holds democrats are likely to flip. And in the middle of a surge of coronavirus, no masks, no problem, but we will talk to one of the er doctors on the front lines. All of it as the 11th hour is just getting underway on this tuesday night. Another bundle in the books. Got to hand it to you, jamie. Your knowledge of victorian architecture really paid off this time. Nah, just got lucky. So did the thompsons. That faulty wiring couldve cost them a lot more than the mudroom. Thankfully they bundled their motorcycle with their home and auto. Theyre protected 24 7. Mm. What do you say . One more game of backgammon . [ chuckles ] not on your life. [ laughs ] when the lights go down to save you up to 60 . These are all great. And when you get a big deal. You feel like a big deal. Priceline. Every trip is a big deal. You know, there arent a lot of pundits who could have guessed four years ago that the democratic candidate for president in 2020 would be campaigning in georgia on the final week of the election. Or that wed have such Competitive Senate races in georgia but we do because somethings happening. Here in georgia and across america. Something is happening the man says. Joe biden playing offense today campaigning as you heard him say in georgia. A state democrats have not carried in a president ial election since clinton 92. Our nbc news battleground map in fact currently lists georgia as a toss up, and both arizona and texas were just moved from lean republican to toss up. Those changes come as the New York Times is reporting Mike Bloomberg is funding a last minute adatizing blitz for biden in texas and ohio. The times reporting the effort is expected to total around 15 million. Here with us again tonight James Carville, veteran democratic strategist who rose to National Fame with that same clinton president ial campaign. These days is cohost of the 2020 politics war room podcast. And mike murphy strategist and Strategic Advisor these days to Republican Voters against trump. Gentlemen, welcome as always. Do you feel it was good, was it a good call to send biden to georgia . Do you see it as winnable, and do you agree that texas is squishy and potentially turnable . Yes, yes, and yes. Georgia i feel particularly good about. I was on the phone all day in georgia. You know, president clinton is still irritated we didnt carry it in 1996. I was born in georgia. I think that the atlanta area people will realize it looks like los angeles now. Its one of the most energetic diverse places that people really get along with each other. And these democrats down there, they are really, really working hard. I am very, very optimistic of our georgia. I dont see anything in the early vote that gives me much pause for concern. And the republicans will get their vote out, but georgia is changing state. Georgia is representative of a new america and i think in a good way. And im really optimistic about it, brian. I really am. Mike murphy if you had your drugters would biden move to florida for the next couple of days and have his mail forwarded or are you content with where their schedule is . I think theyre doing it right. The traditional republican sun belt firewall is burning down quickly. I mean, biden is totally playing on trump republican turf now on offense. I agree with james if theyve got a real chance to grab georgia, same thing in florida, and florida is a back breaker. Georgia is another one they couldnt afford to lose. And so the midwestern states where trump got his win last time are looking pretty bad, and ive seen republican polling that shows biden up a couple in ohio. And if thats true michigan and wisconsin are gone. So bidens in a great position. Hes got money, momentum, and hes deep into Donald Trumps turf on offense, so thats forcing the Trump Campaign with their resource problems to kind of cannibalize and entrench and fight a pretty tough defensive battle right now. James, when you see the president going after a single electoral vote in nebraska, does that tell you whos playing defense . Theyre out of money, they stole it all. Theres a story in the paper they policed the campaign for a billion dollars down in florida. I saw a less than encouraging story about turnout. Something needs to fix that thing pronto, and democrats get on them. Make them get some energy down there in south florida because weve got to build up a big march in there. But of course hes doing that because theyre broke. Hes pulling ads down, and they took it through corporations and Everything Else, and those two stories talking about all the other graph. When the story of this administration is written, the incompetence, the buffoonery, the division is not going to be the big story. Its going to be sheer utter magnitude of the corruption. And i think voters are seeing that, and i think voters are sick of it. I really do. Mike murphy, make us all better viewers. What polls matter to you right now . What are you watching . Well, im almost to the point where the polls are a bit academic. You know, the campaigns can tweak a little bit into the last weekend. Remember we probably have 75 million votes in the pipeline right now that have either been cast, and i think that number in the high 60 are in the final wave of mail and people walking in this week for early voting. So theres not a lot of throttle control now and theres no big event to shake it up. Im watching florida. James is right about miamidade. Thats where trump has sold some tickets particularly in the cuban community. And theres a little underperformance going on there. Theres other places where biden is doing pretty well, but theres things to watch tactically here as the campaign closeds. We just put up a little spanish radio in miami and republicans voters against trump. All in all im watching the metrics on turnout and im wondering as this horrible covid pandemic gets worse and worse in some of the upper midwestern states how will that affect election day voting, and who might be scared away from the polls. Trump is relying on a huge election day vote because hes getting slaughtered in the early vote, will it be a headwind for him or are his people so riled up that, you know, therell be some democrats who dont feel its safe to vote on election day in michigan and wisconsin. So im watching the little stuff like that because the big stuff is kind of locked in now. You leave us with a lot to think about. Both of these gentlemen have agreed to stay with us. This will give him two minutes to return to the world series. Just ahead the president says it would be proper to declare a winner exactly one week from tonight. It would be very, very proper and very nice if a winner were declared on november 3rd instead of counting ballots for two weeks, which is totally inappropriate. And i dont believe thats by our laws. I dont believe that. Okay, did you hear that news media . The man wants a winner declared a week from tonight. The president just before departing for his rally in michigan this afternoon. Back with us for round two are our guests and friends of this broadcast. James carville and mike murphy. Mike, because i want a recording of you reacting to ted cruz, here is what ted cruz said to axios earlier today. Your response on the other side. One of bidens best points was when he said all of these attacks back and forth about my family and his family, they dont matter. What matters is your family. That may have been bidens best moment, actually. And i so you dont believe voters are moved by the hunter biden stuff . I dont think it moves a single voter. So mike, interesting quote there from ted cruz, aka, mr. Popularity in the u. S. Senate. Do you agree with the republican from texas . Yeah, i think somebody must have slipped a little truth serum into the martini there because hes absolutely right. Again, most people think hunter is the ceiling fan. This election is about big stuff like the covid pandemic and uniting the country, so i think thats a pretty astute observation by senator cruz. And im not used to those, so ill give him a salute. So james car vville, by my clock it is 11 34 30 seconds and at this time on Election Night what will be talking about . I think well be talking about a biden presidency, i really do. Let me give credit to my dear friend president clinton in 1992 said they want to make this about my past and i want to make it about our future. Not think extraneous things like Hunter Bidens laptop. So i have to agree with senator cruz and mike on that. I think if texas is then biden is going to be president. Mike murphy, you agree with that last point . James is absolutely right. I mean, were not going to know everything but were going to know a lot. In ohio and florida because they count the absentee early, were going to know a ton. And theres got to be a lot of clues there. There will be some late vote in michigan and wisconsin. The vote the day of could look pretty good for trump which is why he was talking election day voting. The networks poll absentee voters. Theyve been polling online for two weeks. So the decision desk will be able to give hints with whos leading with the absentee to demystify that in what could be leading election numbers in a few of the states. I think by midnight theres going to be tiers of one campaign and a lot of party in another one. Hes a consultant to nbc and hell tell you pretty good whats going to happen, i promise you. Well, well be there to go out on a full shot of james. Im going to quote a friend of this broadcast erin hanes. She writes lol James Carville is like im coming here for this live hit but im leaving the game on. And thats the James Carville we love after all. James, go back to the world series. Thank you for letting me watch over your left shoulder. Thats all the game im going to see tonight until i get to my dvr. Always a pleasure. Thank you both so much. Back to the game. Testing may be identifying some of more cases. I think thats clearly true, but what were seeing is a real increase in the numbers. Compare today the most memorial day surge even though testing is up, this is real increase in case. We know that not only because the case numbers are up and we can calculate that, but we know hospitalizations are going up. You may remember the White House Coronavirus task force. That is the testing czar even as the president keeps on insisting that we only have so many cases because we do so much testing. In the real world hospitals in wisconsin are being overwhelmed by new patients. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporting it this way today, wisk reported its most dismal coronavirus numbers yet. On tuesday state Health Officials urged residents to leave home only when absolutely necessary and warned the crisis would continue escalating. Hospitalizations have seen rapid unimpeded growth for the last 5 weeks, straining short staffed Health Care Systems across the state. For more on that note we welcome to the broadcast an associate professor at the school of medicine and Public Health at the university of wisconsin madison. Hes also the chief quality officer there and continues to practice as an er doc flying with the University Hospitals Critical Care transport program. Doctor, thank you for coming on. Whats the situation in your state and in your hospital . Brian, i wish we had better news but things are a bit dire in wisconsin right now. We keep seeing record growth of cases, increases of hospitalizations, and the Gold Standard metric. Were seeing more deaths. More people are dying in wisconsin of covid19. Our hospitals are struggling to keep up right now. I know youre a medical guest and not a political guest, but what does it do to your heart to know that when the president travels and lands in a state like wisconsin that is almost by definition, almost by nature a super spreader event. We know that because we can tell the cases after the fact when he takes off and goes to washington and a few days transpire. You know, its really frustrating for us as medical professionals. I think when the pandemic started we were hoping that, you know, the government would be our ally and help us fight this. And to see instances where theyre not neutral but actively working against our efforts to protect citizens in the state you can imagine that that causes a lot of frustration within the medical community. Also frustrating because youre just a guy living your life out in wisconsin is the fact that virus fatigue is at its height at a time when as of tonight the coronavirus is at its height to date in our country. Yeah. I think, you know, we watched early on as new york took a beating, and we didnt want to be that same way. But with all the fatigue around the mitigation efforts compounded by a lot of confusion in residents of the state hearing a different message from different leaders i think weve had a lot of people in wisconsin kind of throw in the towel and say were just going to get back to normal. And thats having disastrous effects here in our state. A lot of people are getting sick, and a lot of people are dying. Im told you volunteered to enter one of the clinical vaccine trials. Whats that been like, and what stage are you at . Yeah, so i was the first to volunteer for the Astrazeneca Oxford trial. And, you know, thats been a good experience. I havent had any side effects. And one of the things i want today do as a leader in our Health System is model the way to let people know that this is something they can signup for. They can participate in it and really make progress towards writing the final chapters on this pandemic with a safe and effective vaccine. Well, thank you for volunteering to be part of that effort. Im not sure everyone i know would do the same thing though were all hoping to be recipients of it. Dr. Jeff potoff, thank you for the work you do and coming on our broadcast on this tuesday night. Another break for us. Do you know it when you see it on social media, facebook, on twitter, disinformation thats dressed up real nice posing as truthful information . Theres a lot of it out there. Something to do with this election coming up. Our reporting on it coming up as well. R reporting on it coming us well a live bookkeeper is helping customize quickbooks for me. Okay, youre all set up. Thanks that was my business gi, this ones casual. Get set up right with a live bookkeeper with intuit quickbooks. Hey neal with 3 cash back at drugstores from chase freedom unlimited, you can now earn even more. I got this great shampoo you should try. Yeah you look good. Of course i do neal, im kevin hart. Now earn 3 at drugstores and so much more. Chase. Make more of whats yours. Tomorrow the ceos of facebook and google and twitter will Face Congress with less than a week to go before election day. The issue of disinformation is likely to come up as it did after 2016 when the russians mastered and employed all of their platforms with a minimal investment on their part and in many cases without any resistance at all. All of the platforms have made last ditch efforts to try and counter the active spread of false information that we know to be going on right now. Nbc news correspondent jo ling kent remains on this beat for us. She is back with us tonight from los angeles. Hey, jo. Hey, brian. Ive got the prepared testimony from Mark Zuckerberg, jack dorsi. Exempting them from legal liability from content posted by their own users, theyre going to say its critical to Free Expression online. The lawmakers expected to grill all three of these ceos on issues of perceived censorship. Election security from both sides and what theyre trying to do to prevent another 2016 when as you mentioned russia linked accounts tried to sow confusion among voters. So we know these Bank Accounts and trolls are very much alive and well right now. So we wanted to know how can you best protect yourself and turns out theres one easy way to learn. With early voting well under way, disinformation campaigns are in full force on social media like they were in 2016. Trolls pushing conspiracies and false information to go viral. Once again russia linked entities are often behind them along with iran and groups inside the u. S. So have we learned anything about how to spot the trolls . The more partisan it is the more partisan, the more fringe the matter. Reporter they created this online quiz. What is the mission of a troll . The trolls want to be your friend. Theyre out there pretending to be somebody that probably thinks just like you. They want to work to divide us and distract us and to decrease our trust in established institutions. Reporter engaging with a harmless looking troll can lead you down a rabbit hole of disinformation. Harmony says shes a conservative College Student and amy says shes a proud black american. Weve blurred their faces because we dont know whose photos were actually used by the two troll accounts tied to the infamous Internet Research agency. It uses trolls and real people to see if you can tell the difference. Its a good lesson. Reporter no one including yours truly did better than 5 out of 8. You cannot really trust either side. Reporter what do you think youve learned from this . Its surprisingly difficult to spot these things. Reporter one red flag someone who appears to agree with your opinions. One was the africanamerican from black lives matter and then it came from russia. Reporter but doesnt reveal anything personal about their life. People need to pause and think is this true and is this a person i want to hand my microphone to. Im not going to follow certain pages or support pages or people if i dont know about them or know who they are. Im pretty mortified, brian, of my 5 out of 8 score but to show you how ungoing this is facebook took down more foreign accounts today for nefarious inauthentic behavior. And we got for the first time a disclosure of how many qanon accounts have been banned. Facebook now specifically disclosing theyve taken down more than 14,000 groups of militarized social movements and nearly 19,000 instagram accounts that represent qanon. So theres a lot of forces coming at you as you prepare to vote if you havent already. So jo, this marks something of conversion for Companies Like facebook who have not always been aggressive saying we run the platform, we cant police everything. Any indication theres going to be fireworks tomorrow which i assume will be one of those virtual hearings . Every single ceo will be virtual, brian, and expect a lot of fireworks. We do expect lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to come at these ceos and say what about sensoring us on that, and you can expect them to try to take these ceos to task. But the key here is congress has been unable or unwilling to regulate these companies. And even Mark Zuckerberg himself has said repeatedly come at us with some regulations, wed love to work with you. But theres been no political will to do so at least not that weve seen over the past five or so years. We love having you on this beat with us. We appreciate it. Another break for us. When we come back a warning for all of us from the folks at the Washington Post, and this one is a sign of our times. Shingtone is a sign of our times one, we all get together and support each other. Thats the nature of humanity. It has encouraged other people to take the time for each other. This is the feeling of total protection now that we protect your identity, and mobile phone, as well as auto home and life youve never been in better hands allstate click or call for a quote today last thing before we go tonight is something deadly serious with a week to go before this election. Its hard to believe we have to say this but throw this on the pile of things we cant believe were saying. The u. S. Mail cant be trusted as it once was. Thats just a fact. Its because of politics, because of the president s campaign against mailin ballots. Because of his hand picked post master general, because of forced slow downs in equipment and work rules. Its not because the Postal Service suddenly got bad at their jobs. Quoting from the Washington Post for millions of voters who consider using the Postal Service to cast their ballot for the november 3rd election its time to find a backup plan. Election administration and postal experts say. With a the president ial election a week away mail service continues to lag especially in certain swing states that could decide control of the white house. Nationally 85. 6 of all first class mail was delivered on time the week of october 16th. Thats the fourth consecutive week the on time rate sat below 90 for mail that should reach its destination within three days. Overlapping federal court orders in new york, pennsylvania, montana, Washington State and d. C. Blocked Postal Service officials from pursuing a cost cutting agenda that delayed much of the nations mail over the summer. But those orders and extraordinary steps from within the agency have not restored service levels, leaving voters to navigate the unprecedented diversity of options for casting their votes. The post article goes onto say this bluntly. If youve requested a mail ballot and it hasnt arrived yet, its too late. If you have your ballot and you havent mailed it in yet, its probably too late for that, too. Find an official drop box if possible or make a safe plan to vote in person if possible. If its any comfort, it wont always be this way. There wont always be a pandemic. There wont always be political pressure on the Postal Service or a supplicant post master general. But for now in this election the post master general has it right. Find a way to vote and get your vote in and counted. The u. S. Mail is suddenly not the best way to go with one week to go until this election. So tough love to take us off the air on a tuesday night with our thanks for being here with us. On behalf of all my colleagues at the networks of nbc news, good night
