With the Power Outages. In l. A. It was felt in las vegas. On a different level. Youll see things swaying and people walked out of the restaurants or houses or where ever. This is earlier in ridge crest where a house caught fire. Everybody did make it out safely. I think come daylight well hear more about the devastation. That is in this particular area. A man that molly spoke with earlier described his house as sliding off the foundation. And he lost his home. He went around and checked on neighbors and got them out. And animals out. Which is what everybody there is doing now. Checking on neighbors. Thats what theyre advised to do. And sit tight. We dont know scientists dont know at this point how long these after shocks are going to last. Its about 100 miles away from the san andreas fault. That fault has nothing to do with this. Thats what the scientists told us earlier. Seismologist who has been keeping us updated was saying this is a con vvergence of different faults. Faults that are spreading. Every earthquake is an opportunity to learn what works and what doesnt. Everything about building structure, Warning Systems which did work. And also the cause of the quake themselves. Scientists have a will the of data to look over and theyll be poring over it. As they try to figure out what happened and what could happen next. This is in los angeles earlier. People are reacting fairly calm. Laughing actually. And the chandeliers are swaying. This is where the area where people describe it as being seasick. Theres a swaying. And a bit of vertigo. You can see the baseball game with the dodgers here. The camera is shaking. And the crowd was shouting. As they felt the power of the quake. Which is quite far from the epicenter. That shows you powerful it is. 7. 1 is a big number. It is the largest event in that area in 20 years. They have a lot to learn from this. There is good news. From l. A. The Los Angeles Fire Department has been busy since it happened. They have done a full scale inspection by both land and air. The infrastructure of the city and given it the all clear. Its still dark and hopefully the story will remain the same if the morning. They report there has been no loss of life. No serious injury. There have been calls for aid. And everything is going on as normal in l. A. So far. This is earlier in krijs. I believe. Ridge crest. People ran out so quickly. Theres a woman in her pajamas. A man calming down his dog. People standing outside not knowing whether its okay to go inside. There have been such a series of after shocks that theyre sitting put. Or checking on neighbors. And to see if they need help. While emergency vehicles are going around seeing if theres damage and if anybody is in need of help. Lets go back to holly. Who is at the epicenter of this. In ridge crest. And has well have her in a second. She has quite a few stories to tell. They were in a hotel covering the earthquakes and she was on the first floor, her crew on the third. Molly was awakened by the earthquake and the crew on the third floor said they were shaken awake. One out of bed. Things were falling off the shelves. Is she on . Okay. Lets go back to doctor jones. Who is a sieismologist and she s keeping us up to date. It can be high lie variable. In fact in a number of cases where the epicenter is located has a smaller amount of slip. If theres a huge variability at the end of the fault you see less than the middle of the fault. Because its tapeering off before it ends. And this does appear to be at the southern end of the rupture zone. Hopefully theyll be able to get out maybe tomorrow or the next day. And look along other sections of the rupture. This is a dramatic picture. Fortunately they were able to get out their tonight. Presumably i think these guys and gals are going to be working throughout the night. To gather as much as they can. We should see more of this tomorrow . I suspect so. Yeah. How many people out there . I dont have an exact count. Probably ten to 15. Maybe more. Theres a few of them from the u. S. Gs. Theres geologists from Southern California earthquake center. Which is all the universities. Were seeing scientists from a lot of the other institutions will be there. You dont get many chances to collect this data. I ran into geologist everywhere i went. They were there casually. Because they got to see was what was happening. At what point do the people become activated and a net work of information . Its actually very difficult logistically to coordinate this. The u. S. Gs teamed up to take the lead on this. Which is typically whats done in this situation. There are a lot of other geologists and scientists who can help out. They are actually setting up a commander Coordination Center in the field. So that people know where to go. Theyre not stepping on each others toes and use the resources most efficiently. There used to be a time when it was more chaotic. We try to coordinate. We set up a clearinghouse and were starting to even the geologists come and start having apps to share the information. Each quake with e get further down that digital spectrum. The depth of the earthquake again. Perhaps ten miles deep . Does that define the intensity. No. Thats just where it started. Just a couple minutes ago, many times the epicenter or the hype center the location of depth may have a small amount of slip relative to the fault. As it propagates across the fault it can grow. You can get larger displacements. This picture the is proof it clurp ruptured to the surface. Have the percentages changed . No. When you talk about the this being a 7. 1 there. What is it were feeling in l. A. . Roughly. The magnitude doesnt depend on the location. Its a 7. 1 period. Theres no location to that. To describe what we feel we talk about intensity. It looks like it was 3 to 4. In the l. A. Area. Depending on where you were. The after shock sequence is not a surprise. Its vigorous. But in line. Not surprising maybe not anticipating. Thats within the ballpark . In california, Southern California would expect to have a magnitude 7 once every 15 to 20 years. The last was 20 years. We expect a six every three years or so. And the big e surprise is we have gone 20 years without a six. Is this is more think of this as a return to what california is supposed to be doing. The last 20 years was a standard. This part of california the valley starting from here up through to mammoth and to reno is characterized by these earthquakes. There have been multiple sequences with sevens. With the large very act i have after shocks. So this is thats far from unusual for the area. Just to point out. Follow along with dr. Jones was saying. In 1876, we had an earthquake just to the north. 1827. The magnitude estimated 7 and a half to 8. Very large. Historically just maybe about 50 miles north of this activity. Its not in the historical record this level of activity is not impressive. When we talk about the probability. 5 is the je ngeneric number. On average over the area. The ability to have what youll be triggering if were seeing a lot of after shocks, the numbers go up a bit. When you have earthquakes you tend to have earthquakes. This is an active sequence. After shock goes up with the over all number. This is probably this was a 7. 1. 7. 0 would be an after shock. I cut you off. Can you give a specific locater of where that is . I apologize i dont have a reference on that. It is southwest of along highway 178. I have received word that cal transclosed the highway. They need to do repairs. Between ridge crest and along highway 178. How close to where yeah. So as far as we can tell. We have a message. This is just a text message from a geologist in the survey. And he said southwest of highway 178. Rob is marking highway 178. And because we have that fault structure, we can see it its right lateral motion. Its on the northwest fault. The southwest fault is left lateral. What the geologist track out there. What does that look like . Theyre going out they take pictures. And they document. At this particular location and measure it. This is about 30 centimeters of slip. About one foot. And thats one of the important pieces that will be put together is whats the offset as a function going down the fault. They actually have very sophisticated equipment. Where they can 4. 5. Where they can measure in great detail. They take out images of the structures and can digitize that. And get previcise view. Theres a wealth of data that will be able to look at and get a detailed picture. What would yor questions be about this fault . My question . Well. Oh wow. Curious about that. Theres actually a number of questions in terms of the ground motion that are radiated from faults. As they break to the surface. Theres indications that the ground motions are lower. Than they might be expected from ruptures that are buried. Talking about the north ridge earthquake. There was a buried fault. It was very energetic. The magnitude was 6. 7. It was incredibly strong shaking. This earthquake its going to be interesting to see. Its a 7. 1. The ground shaking in the preliminary indications for this magnitude the shaking maybe lower than is typical. Ill note that for the 6. 4 yesterday thats also the case. It broke up to the surface. In the ground motions were lower than what might be expected for the average 6. 4. Thats important if we can understand that. And be able to better forecast what might happen in the next theres an unusual point. On the 6. 4 the rupture moved down the fault more slowly an average. And maybe that contributes to the lower ground motion rather than breaking through. We dont know yet. How fast it ruptured down the fault. Ta will help us address some of the pictures. And were lucky well have a different rupture speed and compare how the ground motions look. Would it appear to be opening up. Would you see it move . Sfwl we think you see it move. Theres two different comparable things that happen. One is the rupture which starts at the hyper center and goes across the fault. Very fast. Two miles a second. If you were standing next to the fault you would see something that went from that horizon to zoom to the to the other horizon. The fault is actually moving side to side. That rupture would go on that. Like a zipper. And the fault would be going about a couple feet maybe three feet per second. Sliding by. You would see a zip and then the two sides of the fault. You could see slide by. It make take two or three seconds to happen. Last question. Have you ever these cracks big enough for a person to fall in . Its not opening up. It it could open up you will not have a earthquake. Like snapping your finger. It makes the air vibrate. Try making sthnapping your fings with it opened up. There would be no waves off of it. There are reports where people witnessed the fault move. Very dramatic. Obviously very strong shaking too. Youll have difficulty standing up and so forth. Anyway. Last question . Estimate of the likelihood of another quake above a 7. Do you have an estimate of another quake happening later than this 7. 1. Thats just a few percent lower. Greater than 7 includes everything bigger. Its on the order of 8 or 9 . People will be feeling this for quite sometime. People down here will be feeling sizable after shocks. Theres potential the ones above 5. They seem to be felt if you are sitting quietly in l. A. Were certain well have more of that size somewhere over the next few days. The 6. 4 and after shocks were on a south wes motion. These are going northwest. Would you expect the rest of the after shocks to be in northwest . On both structures probably. You will be back tomorrow morning . Not me. Okay. Thank you. I believe there somebody will be here. 11 00. We have been checking in with d. Jones a seismologist and robert graves. They have been keeping us up to date on what happened in Southern California. Yesterday. And today. Encouraging news from the people who study this. This is not unusual. Terrifying. Depending on where you were. Not unusual. It happens about every 20 years the last one was 20 years ago. So if youre just joining us, the scientists themselves are trying to understand this. Were trying to keep up. What happened yesterday in the Southern California area was actually called a fore shock. Of 6. 4 magnitude followed by after shock of 5. 0. Which led to the 7. 1 actual earthquake. That happened there earlier today. And there have been a whole series of after shocks in the whole area ever since. These are part of the same sequence as they have described. Basically its happening on a series of fault lines. Several of them. That are spreading adding to the situation. Its not terribly unusual. People in los angeles describe sort of a swaying. Feeling seasick. Or being on a boat. You can see things swaying. Chandeliers and people leaving homes and restaurants. Similar story in las vegas. Swaying and people running outside. The epicenter in ridge crest it is described as being extraordinary violent. That is where the 7. 1 occurred. Other places is being felt as an intensity of about a three. Molly is in ridge crest. She was there to cover yesterdays event. And was actually awakened out of bed by tonights event. Startled actually. Thank you for joining us again. Tell us the situation there now. Every time you describe this swaying the rolling motion. Thats felt in las vegas. Its so unbelievable to me it was so violent here. It was a jerking violent motion. That i have never experienced before. It was as if my room was on hinges. Im going to what was that . We lost your microphone for a second. We can hear you now. Ill bring in warren cooper. You live in the area. I want to quickly give the viewers a sense of what it was like for you. I described what it felt like for me. Where were you . I was believe it or not my friends from las vegas were up here checking on me. Wanted to maybe sure i was okay. We were at my shop and having a good time. The cars started rocking back and forth. My buddy were watching this cell phone tower just sway. Dont move. Just stop just relax. And thats when we just let it settle and we buttoned up the shop and started doing our thing today. You said earlier you realize you were outside in the safe place. You were not near tall buildings. Do not go near those buildings. You needed your friends to stay put. Stay put and watch. We were in the middle of the backyard. Keep your eyes open. You describe your house. What happened. My house is a mess. Yesterday my fish tank smashed. Shattered all over the living room. All my dressers were caved in. Tvs on the floor. Today it was worse. Today i was lucky enough i was the only one yesterday on the foundation. Today i wasnt so lucky. Your house is essentially a Triangle Foundation and slid off. The whole corner my back corn e of the house is in the dirt. The corner dropped four foot. Its not a pretty sight. I just grabbed my dog and shut the water off. And the gas. And i started checking on other people. Describe you went door to door. And a an apartment complex. I live in the county. I checked on that. Im a super for apartments. It was we got there everybody was crying. It was bad. I had my buddy from las vegas. He was behind me. I started barking and said welfare check. Beat on peoples doors. Make sure everybody is okay. I wasnt to the water main and gas main and shut them off. We had structure damage. It was pouring. We pulled everybody out of the unit. Youre a here helping volunteer. I knew this was a place to be. This was a place i needed to be. I came in here and said where do you want me. Help direct traffic and thats what i have been. Have you been talking to friends in other parts of the city . We had a crew in the mobile home park. And the house fire. Everybody is a lot of things are shaken up. Its a lot of mess. Theres a lot of water heaters fell off. Water lines broke. Things like that. My other buddy was here. Hes running around for me and checking on my dad. He was in the hospital. His house is a mess. I have had so many people call and text me. Is everything okay. They hear my story or see me. The house is not so good. Theyre like i have a place. Its unbelievable. We spoke with a man earlier today. It was a 28,000 people kpunt community and its a tight community. Her advice is knock on doors check on family. Text people. Thats going to help the emergency services. You have to go. Go do what you need to do. That was warren cooper. He lives nearby. He lost his house and hes outside the hospital volunteering helping out. This is an unbelievable community. We always hear about the strength in small communities after disaster like this. He described everyone checking on everyone else. Making sure strangers have a place to go. Its extraordinary. Amazing. He has a smile on his face and helping after what he lost. Its incredible. This is a 28,000 member community. Its a very tight knit area. And they have about 1,800 Power Outages you can see. Its nighttime. Its dark there because the lights are out. The hospital right behind her is actually the only place in the area that had a generator and in full working area. Where are you . Thank you. Lets go to joe friar in los angeles. Bring us up to date. First of all we can tell you a little over an hour ago kern county officials held a News Conference with preliminary information. Obviously its still a fluid situation. Its dark. Theyre trying to assess the situation. Officials said there were no fatalities reported. They were getting medical aid calls. There was backlog. Only call 911 if you have an actual emergency. People were calling trying to get information. That was one important thing. No reports of major gas leaks Power Outages. No reports of major Building Collapses. They admit they were assessing the situation. And a lot of checking to do. Wefr heard reports and seen mobile home parks heavily impacted by what happened. Fires have been taking place and roads cracked heavily. Rock slides are taking place. One of the major highways the state route 178 has been closed in some areas because of rock slides. We want to talk about the probability of what might happen next. Yesterday we experienced the 6. 4 which the a the type was the strongest we had seen here in Southern California in 20 years. We were told theres a one in 20 chance, 5 chance there could be an earthquake stronger than that. The odds with low. Thats what happened. We saw a 7. 1 late on friday. Once again there is still about a one in 20 chance we could see an earthquake Even Stronger than the 7. 1. We expect to feel a number of after shocks in the coming days. Many will be in the fives. The kind of thing that maybe here in los angeles some people might be able to feel. We might see some of magnitude six. I was actually in ridge crest earlier this morning at the time we had a 5. 4. Something you could feel. Didnt cause damage. That at the time was the strongest after shock. We now know all of those were precursors to friday night. Just last night a 7. 1. A lot of people want to know the big one. We talk about it all the time. Theres movies made about it. The san andreas earthquake expected to happen at some point. Which will affect a much larger population. What happened tonight and what happened yesterday is not going to make the san andreas earthquake anymore or less likely. Every year in Southern California the odds of a major san andreas earthquake happening are around 2 . That remains the number. I know authorities by ground and air flew around and drove around looking for damage. Do you have any idea whether or not they plan to make another round tomorrow morning . They will be assessing damage as much as possible. We have heard in l. A. And the city and county along with lax airport, they have done all the assessment they need to do. No report of major structural damage. No injuries. I was actually in hollywood at the time the earthquake hit in a Movie Theater. Lester holt was in a Movie Theater. Similar to the day before. You felt a rolling motion. If youre in your house and a very large truck drives by. And you feel the motion. It keeps going longer and longer and started to get more intense. In the first few seconds we look at each other. Is this an earthquake . I realized it was. Throughout the theater you can hear people murmuring. My thought was to look up and see what was above me in the dark. Youre worried about lights and swaying. You need to take cover and protect your head. It felt like it lasted longer than the earthquake the day before. 30 to 40 seconds maybe longer. And it settled down. Some of the people were jumping on their phones. To make phone calls. Other people stayed and watched the movie. I did not. Hear in l. A. The possibility is that even if there is a 5. 1 the epicenter is going to feel that the most. If youre in l. A. You could possibly notice swaying here. Well check back in with you later. Well take a quick break. We will continue to follow breaking news out of Southern California. Right here on. A series of seismic events starting yesterday with the 6. 4 described as a fore shock. Than followed by an after shock and tonights major earthquake of a 7. 1 magnitude. The epicenter on the map is in a place called ridge crest. All part of same sequence and ever since that 7. 1 quake there have been a series of after shocks that are rattling that entire area. The good news from the l. A. Fire department is there are no reports of fatality or major injury. There have been some calls for aid. Nothing serious. They have scouted out the area. On the ground and by air. And have reported no major damage. There is damage to the highway. That leads into the area. Which again is the epicenter of the events. We are expecting a press conference out of the area fairly soon. Well take that when we get it. Earlier i spoke with lester holt. In santa monica with his family. They were at a Movie Theater. I was with my wife and one of my sons in a Movie Theater downtown. And began to feel the tremble. I held my wives hand and looked at each other. No panic. Everyone is kind of in the theater acknowledging what was happening. It kicked into second gear and people started to get up. We decided to get out. Everyone was orderly. We made our way to the stairwell. And went down the several floors to the street level. There was no panic. It was one woman sobbing. Very disstraugt. Understand understandably. We got on the street. It was hard to tell who felt what. Across the street there was a hotel. We could see people gathered in the lobby around the tv watching the local News Coverage of this. I spoke to one of my neighbors who was here in our building who talked about the strongest thing she has felt and it was scary. Neighbors knocking on doors checking on others. It was a lot of quakes in lt world. This got my attention. Ill tell you that. Did you feel the after shock and as a person who has been through this before, do you have any kind of understanding about what to expect from here out . Its really confusing. I was just watching the coverage. My understanding is that theyre saying what we experienced yesterday was a fore shock. And this was the actual quake. I have never seen that happen. From a large quake to a larger quake. As fore shock or thats out of my wheel house. Last i heard there was 1,400 after shocks from the ent yesterday. And two smaller ones before that. One in the middle of the night around 4 00 a. M. Both woke up and didnt know why. It must have been that one. Keep in mind im in santa monica. About a block and a half from the beach. 120 miles from ridge crest. The epicenter of the latest quake. The fact we felt it this strong folks i have spoken to were all saying what if this had been closer to los angeles. 10, 15 Million People here. What that would have been like. Its certainly raising awareness now of vulnerability and looking around construction and all the earthquake retro fitting done here. And really making people consider that question. Are we prepared . Have you seen any of what mayor said he has described as the somewhat door to door effort among First Responders. We have been listening to sirens and emergency vehicles and video of First Responders looking at homes and the roads, are you witnessing anything like that . No. You may have heard the background emergency screaming by. Thats friday night here. Hard to know if its related. I havent seen that. We didnt know what to expect. We walked out of the theater. I certain will was thinking we were going to witness damage outside. We saw none of that. I came home and checked all the rooms and pictures and things that might have fallen. Everything seemed in order. I noted when we were talking about yesterdays quake it seemed to go on for on for a long time. This also had a rolling motion. And well ride through this and it was that second jolt that you think i dont know how much this is going to intensity. Lets get out of here. I dont know if it was the right thing to do. Somehow i think our natural instinct is get out. That was lester holt. And he was describing, the preparation for an earthquake and in an area used to them, as we have been listening to seismologists this evening. Bringing us up to date, they are describing the sequence of events not being unusual given the amounts of fault. Every earthquake is an opportunity to learn what works and what doesnt. As far as building structure. As far as retro fitting. As far as infrastructure. The roads and bridges and airports. The runway. The Warning Systems. And what causes the earthquake itself. They will be crunching data over night. And trying to figure out what happened and what we can expect to happen next. That was in santa monica. In l. A. Where it was a considerably different story people describe a rolling motion or swaying. Or feeling like youre on a boat. That was far from the epicenter. In ridge crest. Where molly hunter was staying at a hotel. And was wakened shocked out of bed by the 7. 1 earthquake that happened earlier tonight. We actually just felt a strong after shock. Well wait to see what they say that was. Its so interesting listening to what he describes in l. A. The experience here could not have been more different. And the after shocks are continuous. Which is exactly what they told us would happen. There have been some that have been stronger than others. That one fairly strong. Kind of 15 seconds. Nothing compares to that 7. 1. It was not a rolling motion. It was not a rocking seasick motion. It was a violent shaking motion. It was my room was on hinges. I could feel almost going back and forth on my bed. I have never felt anything like it. The curtains came down. I looked up at the ceiling. A couple different arches and low door ways none of which looked sturdy. The alarm in the hotel went off. My crew was on the third. I was on the first floor. The crew knocked out of bed. A really vinyl shaking. Violent shaking. Furniture and clothing. Everything off desks. I got out so quickly i didnt run into any personnel. There was someone going door to door on the third floor. Outside the hotel reran into families being confused. Not sure what to do or do. Outside we spoke with a bunch of people. Local residents are going door to doo and making sure people are okay. Thats so important. You see how dark it is. Its almost midnight here. Theres no way Emergency Personnel can get to all 28,000 people. I hear there are about 1,800 Power Outages have you seen trucks driving around trying to get it back online . Im looking at the video you have. Thats outside of our hotel. You see the family. Families and people in pajamas. With flashlights. Thats outside of our hotel. All out of o power. We could hear the alarms sounding. People were freaked out. My purse was packed. I grabbed it and ran. People ran out barefoot. As far as Power Outages, the 1,800 number feels really low. We have driven around the area, everything is dark. I dont see any lights except the generator in the hospital. Thank you. Please standby. We have want to check back with you. The epicenter of the event. This is a press conference lets listen. As far as sacramento. The shaking intensity was very significant. Looking at our through what we call the hazard analysis al grit m. It was at the high lefls in and around china lake and just adjacent to ridge crest. We have significant reports of structural fires as a result of gas leaks or gas line breaks. There are gas line breaks throughout the city. Also reports of water marijuana breaks. Power is out in communication is out. The parts of the community. As well as south of ridge crest in san bern county. The town. Small community of about 2,000. Reports of also some Building Collapse in Power Outages and some gas leaks there. Well give you briefings from the various agencies. To talk about conditions on the roads and some of the other impacts. Here at the state Operation Center with are fully activated at highest level. Earlier tonight the governor did talk to the white house. And requested a president ial emergency declaration. The support the operations here in the state and provide federal assets and direct federal assistance. In support of the mutual aid assets that we are currently providing to mostly kern county and the san bern deno county. Provided a significant amount of fire and rescue mutual aid. Fresno county area. Fire strike teams, firefighters, Hazardous Material response unit. Emergency medical services. Ambulance strike teams. And personnel, roughly over 100 mutual aid personnel have been dispatched in support of the various fires and the support of the both towns. Its important to know ridge crest are both remotely locate td. On the eastern side of the sierra. And the roads have been impacted. And getting resources into the area continues to be a challenge. It is a benefit that just two days ago there was a 6. 4 that occurred. And we had a number of resources flr the area. In support of the county. We were able to turn those resources around. They had been released shortly before the 7. 1 and allowed us to have a significant amount of Resources Available almost immediately. We have been in contact with both the mayor of ridge crest. Both myself and governor talked to the mayor and police chief. The county of current fire chief and our coordinating here at the state Operation Center with the state agencies. As well as those county departments to ensure that any resources they need are being provided. Huge priorities right now for medical support. And for firefighters and emergency power. We have been in contact with private sector utilities. Both the water department, gas and electrical utility providers to ensure that they have enough resources to get water and power up and restored as fast as possible. The quake happened at roughly around 8 20. Tonight. So it got dark fast. And situation awareness is sketchy. Because the power is out and theres not a lot of light. We know that as the daybreaks, well be able to get a better saszment of the total amount of damage. And throughout the night tonight, we are working to move assets and resources in place or into staging areas. So that we can have those resources immediately available in the morning in those communities as necessary. So with that ill turn it over to several speakers behind me will brief on what their agencies and departments are working on. And ill come back and answer questions. Deputy commissioner. Good evening. Ill be brief. Its a remote area. The good news is that it was a holiday weekend. Most all Law Enforcement had ramped up and had extra Resources Available. Thats helpful. Were handling the road closures can cal trans. And we peel off and check the Structural Integrity of over passes and roadways and so far other than what the director will tell you, were hearing good news. From there the secondary mission is assist the local Law Enforcement. Right now im hearing that the the calls for service dropped considerably. And most of the calls are being covered well. So as director said, when daylight comes we had aircraft up too. Well have a better idea of whats needed. The good news is the resources there are handling the situation well. And theres more resources going in in the morning. So, ill be ready for questions. Ill turn it over to major general. Of the California National guard. California military department is mobilizing and deploying a joint task force. Including 200 security forces. Sustainment troops. Logistical support and Aviation Assets including helicopters. And cargo aircraft. We have alerted the rest of the military department. So all of the Army National guard. And our statd california state guard. I have spoken with the officials at the bepentagon. That help will be on the way. Chief tom porter from cal fire. Cal fire is prepared to respond with any of the state resources that we have. And that might be needed for this. As of now, we see that fire potential is pretty low for this weekend. Or moderate. And so well be able to use some of the resources from the california Fire Department to meet any needs that are unmet. Also our office of the state fire marshall working with the liquid pipe and fuel providers to ensure that the pipelines are safety through the program. I will be followed by david kim, secretary of transportation agency. Thank you. The status of three roadways the first is state route 178. There is significant damage on 178 as a result of a rock slide. Across both lanes. There are also severe cracks in the roadway. Just outside the township. And this is very close to the location where cracks were discovered as a result of yesterdays event which were repaired quickly within a few hours. Theres a full closure of state route 178. In two different locations. Ill read them to you. From the san bern county like. East of the line. Theres an additional full closure at 4 miles east of the junction. Due to the rock slide. The cracks on 178 will be filled. With cold mix asphalt. A couple routes were state route 127. And state route 190. Rock slide on both routes tonight. They are both cleared and both are now open. Ill be followed by health kp human services. Good evening. We have fully activated and have deployed resources both at the Emergency Medical Services for the California Public of Public Health and social services. Were in close contact with all the Healthcare Facilities in the region. And have communication with them. We also are working with the shelter and task force here. Through our department of social services. Thank you. Before i tack questions. We had a conversation with fema. Fema region nine administer. Fema is present at the state Operation Center. And as a result of the governors request to the white house a fema activating two Incident Management Teams from Northern California in support of the operation. Right now, our big concern obviously is that it got dark fast. Good Situational Awareness of the total amount of impact is where were really looking to get better fidel te on where the line comes up. In anticipation of a need and our discussions preliminary discussions with the police chief and the mayor. We know theres quite a bit of damage and impact. Were moving resources from the various agencies and departments represented here into staging area. To get them as close as possible into the theater of operation. Mainly because it is such a remote area. And really the state is really positioning itself to ensure that the direction that we have every available asset put in the right place and available to respond. Definitely at first light as resources are needed. We can scale back and if theyre not needed and had redeploy them. Or demobilize. This was a large earthquake. And there will be a series of after shocks as a result of the main quake. We want to prepare ourselves and be able to have those resources in place. As the days go on. This is not going to be something that will be over right away. We will be in 24 7 operations here at the state Operation Center. In support of the counties until the situation is mitigated. With that. Happy to answer questions that anybody has. Were there any injuries reported . There have been a number of injuries reported. Dont have a total number. I dont know a count on injury or fatality. We have not had reports of fatality yet. We know there have been injuries. Theres been a significant increase number of ems calls. To the 911 centers. And in talking with the police chief theres been requests for strike team ambulances. As well as the fire units on scene doing Emergency Medical Care of individuals who may have been injured. A lot of falling debris. Or nonstructural items falling and injures individuals. Can you repeat the main priorities you mention medical support. Firefighters. Our main priorities are in support of the county. Ko continuing to protect live ts and environment and property. Fire, Emergency Medical Services shs Hazardous Material, were concerned the area has pipelines going through it. And we want to ensure that we have enough Hazardous Material response. Well coordinate Emergency Response operations for state agencies and federal partners. Local government need. Well be making sure we can get Critical Infrastructure back up as soon as possible. Lifelines. Wear, pour, gas service. Power. And making sure waste water and those things are all fully operational. We are concerned about theres a hospital that is impacted. And a number of care facilities. We want to make sure those facilities and the individuals the vulnerable population needs are met and take that into account. That will be a priority. We want to make sure the public remains informed of what the to do and the know theres after shocks to prepare for those. We suspect that individuals may not want to go back into their homes initially. Sheltering operations will be a primary focus for us. In support of what the local government is doing. Red cross is already been engaged. Were providing Additional Support with several thousand gallons cots and comfort kits. Sheltering supplies and also bedding for individuals who may need that. Fema is supported several thousand commodities as well that they are staging in Edwards Air Force base. We will continue to meet the needs moving forward in the next 24 to 48 hours. Weve been listening in to a News Conference with state officials in california. Military officials, fire and transportation officials all bringing us uptodate on the damage following tonights 7. 1 magnitude earthquake and after shocks
