And any poll showing donald trump behind pretty much anywhere must be a fake if you ask him and thats where we are on this, the eve of the president s reelection launch which he previewed for abc news. Whats your hit for independent voters. I think well do tremendously with africanamericans and asians and hispanics. Thats your pitch. The economy is phenomenal. We rebuilt our military and taking care of our vets and doing the best job anybody have done than any first term president ever. It is a big car with a very small backseat. We mentioned polling, here it is. These are real on our wall street journal polls showing trumps Approval Rating at 44. The same poll found at 52 of all voters and more than half say they are uncomfortable by voting for him in 2020. University of texas, Texas Tribune poll is also real found 39 of all registered voters and the red state of texas would definitely reelect trump but 43 would definitely not. At the same time, same poll finds 26 of independent voters would reelect trump while 45 would definitely not. A fox news poll and do they get anymore real shows some head to head numbers for this president among his most likely democratic opponents. There is 10 points lead for biden and 9 points for Bernie Sanders and pete buttigieg, all have a 12 point lead over trump who supports top south at 41 . Again, this is fox news poll. Trump had this response on the poll on social media. Fox news polls are always bad for me. They were against crooked hillary also. Something weird is going on. Our polls show us leading in all 17 swing states. This comes as we learn over the weekend that the Trump Campaign fires some of it pollsters. It was also the real kind of polling. The leaked poll shows the president trailing joe biden by double digits and Hillary Clinton won in 2016, trump hour also trailing biden in North Carolina and georgia and ohio. All states he won three years ago. That polling also shows biden was a double digit lead in michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, and florida. They get your attention because the president won them in 2016. As the New York Times put it in an article about the now formal pollsters. The internal poll number while not predictive for mr. Trump at least against mr. Biden when they were taken in march. In a message earlier this morning, trump wrote only fake polls show us behind the crew. Here is what he told abc news. Even your own poll shows you are behind right now. No, my poll shows that i am winning everywhere. We have all seen these reports, you spent 2 million on a poll and you are behind in 15 out of 27 states. Those polls dont exist. Those polls dont exist. I had a meeting with somebody thats a pollster and i am winning everywhere. Meanwhile politico is reporting on trumps plan trying to win while facing an onslaught of investigations. We have heard this before and often on this broadcast, in total, trump faces at least 15 criminal or civil inquiies by nine federal state and local agencies into his business and charity and campaign and inaugural committee. Trump hopes to use such charges as part of a strategy that he hopes will help win him reelection, while congressional investigations have guarderered most of the headlines. Echoes weeks ago and months ago and on that time to bring in our leadoff discussion group, joe colven and john howl and tim obrien, executive editor of bloomberg and hes also the author of trump nation. Gil, i would like to begin with you. How do you play the status of his campaign, is there any way to view the status of his presidency or are the two directly linked . Certainly undeniably linked. Whats interesting about this kickoff, the president filed his paper work for reelection back during his inauguration day. The president has been holding his campaign rally, basically since the day he was elected into office and a ton of them into the midterm elections. He continues to do his usual campaign signage. Theyre trying to hype it as much as they can. Theyre trying to hype up the crowd ahead of time with the fair theyre doing outside with food trucks and concert and performers and trying to hype it up and make it Something Different but it is unclear at this point whether the messaging will be anything than what we typically hear at a trumps rally. I would think it would be infrastructure week. Thats to say that the president keeps breathing new air into a bad lead for him. Yes, this is not unique. He does this fair amount. It is sort of like, i went to the barber a couple of days ago and informed me that i was bold so i fired him because i didnt want to hear that. I dont know why he does it. He does it all the time. I dont think in the end it matters whether you are breathing. This is not a story, the story of your polls standing is not damaging. Trump talking about it is foolish and it continues of the tendency of us talking about it does not help him. The real work he has to do is not firing pollsters and not everyone staying off the story but do something about these numbers which are not the interim numbers that are consistent of all the numbers. This is where he is right now which is losing not just joe biden but to many democrats, second tier democrats in a lot of states he got to win. Look at where we all are right now. Joe biden is not the nominee. President s jon edward and he seems to have a profound on the president s thinking. When trump sees biden, he thinks ohio and pennsylvania and wisconsin. Hes a survivor and he knows what biden represents. Biden in trumps mind and polls are a much serious threat in those states. 2020 is going to be a reckoning or referendum of what trump said in 2016 of trump tower, he promised hell take a wrecking ball to the bureaucracy and hes going to drain the swamp. He filled the swamp with larger alligators and a lot of promises he did not deliver that counted him to do something for them. You got a period of time and next summer he has to really deliver a tangible way to those people. Thats what john was getting. He should not be focused on those numbers. Some of those things are going to be out of control. If memory serves our last president taught a little bit of constitutional law. Our current president taught or tried to about an element of the constitution, i am going to play this exchange for you on article 2 powers, well talk about whats wrong with it on the other side. Article ii, i would be allowed to fire robert mueller, assuming that i did all the things i said i want to fire him. Number one, i didnt. He was not fired. Number one, very importantly. More importantly, article ii allows me to do whatever i want. It would have allowed me to fire him. I was not going to fire him, you know why . I watch nixon going around firing everybody and that did not work out too well. Very simply, article ii would allow me to do it. Jill, what do our viewers need to know right there . Well, article ii of the constitution does not say article ii allows me to do anything that i want. Thats the president s interpretation of the power of the presidency to control the executive branch, obviously does not give him the power to obstruct justice or does not give him the power to break the law even though there is a doj that says we cant indict a sitting president. Thats a matter of interpretation. Tim obrien, we have one for you. This is a deconstruction of Donald Trumps view of the Mueller Report and the truth of muellers view of the report. I have a phony witch hunt which is a phony pile of stuff. The Russian Military launched a conservative attack on our political system. The indictment alleged and other act duties in our report describes efforts to interfere our political system. There was no collusion. There was insufficient received to charge a broader conspiracy. Are you trying to say there is collusion even though he says there was no collusion. I dont think we have time for that. Excuse me, he found no collusion and didnt find anything to do with obstruction. He laid out evidence are you trying to say there was collusion even though he said there is no collusion. He didnt say that. The report says there is no collusion. Did you read the report . Yes, you should read it, too. Under long standing departments policy, a president cant be charged with a federal crime. Because they made a rule based on his findings and no obstruction. If we had confidence that the president did not commit a crime, we would say so. No collusion. You got to do it with the hand. Lets get out of the car. This is vintage trump. He did the same thing with tariffs on mexico and same thing with the Mueller Report. Hes saying to the american public, are you going to believe me . I think he believes if he stays on the message that there is no collusion and no obstruction therefore he did nothing wrong and people will buy that. The reality is his base will, most people have not read the Mueller Report including the president himself and probably the president himself even though he says he has. Bob mueller has clear evidence of obstruction. Mueller thought it was up to congress to do something about that and not him. Trump does not want to live with the reality of that. Hes got a attorney general whos helping to come up with the narrative to support that. Whos the bar of the democrats . The attorney general equivalent to the Democratic Party which is faced now with an opportunity some would say a necessity to retell the Mueller Report and understandable english. I think thats the power of congressional hearing. That narrative is going to come to play in a public form and it is going to happen through the first hearing. There will be too Many Americans who dont understand it. Thats what nancy pelosi is afraid of. This party has got to be on the right side of history. I dont think there is much question once you are reading Mueller Report, whether there were laws broken by the president. There is clear obstruction of justice. Mueller looked at whether or not there was a criminal conspiracy. He didnt have the evidence to pursue that. He certainly indicated there was obstruction. John, cutting back and forth between those two men, the gap takes your breath away. It does. I thought that george managed to get so much great revealing stuff from trump that i hesitate to criticize. I wish when article ii where he says let him do whatever he wants. George says article ii of what because i am sure he does not know. And we should force him to read the Mueller Report. I am not sure what would have happened in that scenario. Im guessing if you put the words in front of trump, you must read these words of the page. He would say no collusion and nobody obstruction. He would still insist it does. This has been, the narrow sense politically keeping his base together and creating a solid chunk of 38 or 39 or 40 of the electorates who believe no collusion and no obstruction. What hes trying to achieve, he achieved it by that. Jill, whats the Bumper Sticker as you understand it . I think it is going to be i am going to win again. Thats the message as he tries to convince his supporters and rile them up. The campaign is walking all over themselves, first denying the polls existed and then insisting it was not a useful poll. That we recognize from the early days of the white house. Really seems even though you may transport this Trump Campaign from their former, very spartan headquarters from trump tower and you put them in the big shiny building and you give them all the money and resources, it feels like the same old Trump Campaign. Public backing impeachment, only 28 of pelosis caucus says the same thing. Well, what i would say is what gives her the most decision is not her background but the district she represents. She represents swing districts and she was just elected. She was part of the wave that sent the power back to the house. Maybe they feel it is more political and momentum behind them pushing for this. It is somebody who may be at risk of losing their seat is back in impeachment. Eliot, you know the argument. Some democrats say this is a moral imperative and others say we have to live with the politics in the morning. Members of congress, when they come in, they swear an oath to the constitution, not even to the constituents or polls or anything like that. If they believe to some extent they do have an obligation to act. Here is the thing, brian, elected officials and elected officials have electoral consequences they have to think about. This is piggy backing of what chris said. It is sort of the coal mind of the Democratic Caucus. It is sort of whats called the plus three democratic district so it is just barely leading republicans but represented by a democrat. It could be an interesting sign sort of supporters are snow balling. Does it become an avalanche . Thats the point. Thats where the speaker is right. She needs to have the support of her entire caucus and the American People. There is a vocal minority. But it is a Strong Majority that the Democratic Caucus is calling for. Maybe i put the question wrong. Do you think nancy pelosi will give any greater standing and think, oh, Orange County . Maybe . I think she has her mind some where else rather than any districts or where her fella california stands. I think shes sticking with what is the message to have going into the election year. Do we want to have impeachments running against donald trump for the presidency . She made that calculation and i cant say sitting here whether it is the right one of the wrong one. What democrats can do is build a record and again it is the hearings and frankly if mueller testifies and simply reads from the fact that were noted in the volume one of the report, it keeps us in the headline and profoundly damaging to the president. The biggest lesson of the proceedings, the one thats surely not lost on pelosi is the purely political one. They did not ruin the publics opinion of the president. People have made up their minds largely of how they feel the president has handled interference with the election. There may be some people in the middle that you could hold one direction. It was an International Agreement that all of our allies were on board with. Now we are divided from our national allies. The iranians have no interest in negotiating the United States or they trust the Trump Administration will pursue anything. It is getting worse and not better under the Trump Administration. I am worried where this is headed. I am certain this shows the policy is not working. Lets talk about mike pompeo. Tomorrow hes to visit u. S. Central command, which would be absolutely perfectly normal if he were secretary of defense. But he is the secretary of state. What is he up to . Hes the secretary of state begs the question to someone like you, what on earth could he be up to . Right, we have an acting secretary of defense now. Pompeo likes to remain in the headline and he likes President Trump to see him active on these issues. Part of it pompeo is saying i am the one thats in charge, it is not john bolton or anyone else. As a secretary of state to go and receive a briefing this is really strange. It adds to this drum beat of war thats concerning. Do you agree that the u. S. Probably has incredible imagery of whatever the pictures we have been showing of black and white. Do you agree it is quite possible they have their culprits and at the end of the day, iran or the reserve reserve revolutionary guards did this. This is a high priority for us in terms of improving our intelligence and picture of iranians. We have excellent intelligence of iran. I tend to believe that the Intelligence Community says this is an iranian attack. The fact that the American People and our allies are asking serious questions about the situation shows that President Trump and his administration do not have the credibility to take this country to war again. Both countries have been probing back and forth for years. Two Officials Say they believed mr. Trump have not been briefed in any details and implants and Software Codes that could be used to attack inside the russian grid and pentagon and intelligence officials described broad hesitation to go into detail with mr. Trump about russia for concerns over his reaction and the possibility he may counter man it or discuss it with foreign officials as he did in 2017 when he mentioned the operation in syria to the russians, foreign minister. This is incredible stuff. Kelly, as i heard it described earlier today, it is the ultimate good news bad news story. The home team is in the game. The bad news is they cant tell the coach. Call me old fashion but it is a bad thing and worrying thing that the president is not up to speed or being briefed on these kinds of operations. So these operations are risky and the president of the United States should have a command in them. Like so many things where washington, d. C. Is concerned. But in both cases, we turn to Steve Kornacki for an explanation in the midst of his journey south. Thats right. I guess let me start by this. Let me count to three. One, two, three. In basketball thats a threesecond violation. On our trip to miami thats a trip through washington, d. C. On interstate 95. Youre looking at theed by row wilson bridge and there are 300 feet of this bridge that connects maryland in virginia. Theres about a 300foot portion that technically cuts through the southernmost sliver of the district of columbia traveling at 68 miles an hour, about what weve been doing on this trip. It takes you three seconds to get through the d. C. Portion of 95. Consider d. C. Done at this point. We can now move on to the next part. You see it right here at the end of the bridge. See that sign . Lets zoom in. We are heading into the commonwealth of virginia. And what you notice right away . That slogan. How long have you been hearing and seeing that slogan . Virginia is for lovers, the official motto, the official tourism slogan for the commonwealth of virginia. There was a survey a couple years ago of marketing writers, some marketing professionals. They said, what state has the best from a marketing standpoint sloc began . They said number one, they ranked it virginia is for lovers. They love the old i heart new york campaign. Nevada, a world within, a state apart. Texas, wyoming, they also registered on this. Did not make the list, by the way, but we thought wed give an Honorable Mention to nebraska which said last year, their tourism board said, weve got some challenges and they came up with a new one. Heres what they came up with. Nebraska, honestly its not for everyone. Not making that up. Nebraska last year, the tourism voted to make that distinct tourism slogan. It got a mention here. Weve made our way into virginia. In years past, in the very recent past, that would mean we are heading into the quintessential president ial swing state. But things have been changing in virginia rapidly and dramatically when it comes to president ial politics. We can show you in the 2016 election in virginia, nationally heres a way to look at it. Nationally Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. She didnt win the electoral college. She won the popular vote by 2 points in 2016. She won virginia by 5. Clinton did 3 points better, the democrats did 3 points better in virginia in 2016 than nationally. In 2012, when barack obama got reelected, virginia was the perfect bellwether. 4 and 4. 2008, obama carried the state. Didnt carried the nation. Did not do quite as well in virginia, a 1point republican lean. 2004, george w. Bush, look at this, the state was 5 points more republican than national. Go back to 2000 when bush originally won, al gore barely won the popular vote. Bush easily won virginia in 2000. An 8. 5 swing. It swings, leans hard to the republicans to one thats become competitive to one that may be trending in the other direction. Certainly in the trump era between the governors race in virginia in 2017, the congressional races we talked about last year, democrats flipping seats, it seems that trend is continuing. They used to call it a red state . They called it the quintessential purple state. Theyre starting to call this one a blue state. Well see if republicans can pull a rabbit out of the hat in 2020. Democrats havent felt this confident about virginia for a long time. The south and the deep south yet to come. Steve kornacki, so many waffle houses to go on your trip. Coming up in just a moment, the moment heard round the world. Last thing before we go here tonight, the many hours that George Stephanopoulos and abc news spent with donald trump yielded a lot of news, a lot of comment, a lot of moments.
