Under way on a busy friday night. Busy here tonight. Good evening once again. Day 645 of the Trump Administration and it brought further proof that you should never bet against the feds. A florida man suspected of mailing bombs to highprofile democrats including the homes of two former president s has been arrested. Earlier today, 56yearold cesar sayoc was charged with five federal counts including mailing of explosives and threats against former president and assault of current or former officials. His First Court Appearance will be on monday. He faces up to 48 years in prison if convicted on all counts. The break in the case came thankfully after a fingerprint was lifted off the outside of one of the packages. One of the bombs was mailed to congresswoman maxine waters. According to officials, dna evidence was further found on some of the devices. This morning the fbi seized this white van owned by sayoc that was covered with protrump stickers. As you might imagine, it was a wellknown and instantly recognized vehicle in the local area where he lives. Anticnn propaganda and targets and crosshairs aimed at barack obama and Michael Moore and others. Our Kerry Sanders reported earlier tonight of the suspect and his very active social media profile paints a picture of a trump supporter. His twitter feed showing him going to trump rallies and cheering the president on in the selfie video and another recorded as the president spoke. Online cesar sayoc would go to Many Democrats saying george soros, you will vanish and attacking wasserman schultz. Cesar sayoc was arrested in 2002 for threatening to throw a bomb. A former conviction was not made. He was arrested for theft in 1992 and 2014. Earlier tonight, an attorney for sayocs family told cnn that his former client was very sick. I interacted with cesar and if i would say apples, he would say cardboard. He didnt react like a normal individual. He wasnt working on all cylinders, and this is a sad result of someone whos really sick and did not get a help and became a loaner and found a cause that adopted these types of people. He never seem sophisticated enough to do Something Like hes accused of. I would not be surprised to find out that there were others who helped product or encourage him to do this or that the bombs in fact were so crudely made that they never could have worked. We learned four additional explosive devices were found, they were mailed to Democratic SenatorsKamala Harris and cory booker and James Clapper and and trump critic and impeachment advocate tom stile. This brings the total number of devices to 14. Tonight President Trump praised Law Enforcement for the arrest and called for unity right before he again went after the news media. The medias constant unfair coverage, deep hostility and negative attacks, you know that, only serves to drive people apart and to undermine healthy debates. For example, we have seen an effort by the media in recent hours to use the sinister actions of one individual to score political points against me and the republican party. Yet when a Bernie Sanders supporter tried to murder Congressional Republicans and severely wounded a great man named Steve Scalise and others, we did not use that heinous attempt at mass murder for political gain because that would have been wrong. Later in the broadcast well have more on this sudden injection of Bernie Sanders name into this event. Before leaving for North Carolina while still at the white house, President Trump was asked if he seen the suspects van and if he reached out to anyone targeted with these devices. Did you see your face on that van . I did not. I did not see my face on the van. I dont know i heard he was a person that preferred me over others but i did not see that. Of these targets to update them . If they wanted me to but i think well probably pass. We should point out that early this morning technically in the middle of the night, 3 14 a. M. East coast time, the president turned to twitter and said funny how lowly rated cnn and others can criticize me at will even blaming me for the current spate of bombs and ridiculously comparing this to september 11th and the Oklahoma City bombing, yet when i criticize them, they go wild and scream it is just not president ial. Later in the morning the president added this quote. Republicans are doing so well in early voting at the polls and now this bomb, he sets off bomb in quotes. This brohm stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows. News not talking politics. Very unfortunate what is going on. Republicans go out and vote. This afternoon officials including the attorney general and the fbi director briefed the media on todays arrest. At one point the fbi director added that the pipe bombs are not a hoax. Each device consisted of roughly six inches of pvc pipe, a small clock, a battery, some wiring and what is known as energetic material which is potentially explosives and material that give off heat and energy through a reaction of heat shock or friction. Though we are still analyzing the devices in our laboratory. These are not hoax devices. With that lets bring in our leadoff panel on a friday night and while theres plenty of time to talk about the politics of right now, first lets talk about this investigation and this lightning fast arrest. Jim cavanaugh is back with us from the atf, the explosive expert. Nall come than is with us from homeland security, 35 years on the job working in counterintelligence and a former assistant for the Southern District of new york. Well, jim, any time you have been on i listen carefully and you taught me over the years that every criminal eventually makes a mistake. We are thankful that this criminal made apparently more than one. And if theres a strange blessing to any of this, he left us with so much to go on. They had over a dozen pieces of hardware spread out in the lab to go over with a fine tooth comb, correct . Thats right, brian. I mean, he was better at leaving evidence than he was at making bombs and, you know, looking at that van, im reminded of churchills quote, a fanatic is a guy that wont stop talking and wont change the subject. You can see inside the mind of this guy. Hes a fanatic of this topic and he wanted to go after his targets. So, yes, a treasure trove of evidence and a lot of fingerprints. It was a fingerprint really that broke the case. They were able to get a latent lift off the envelope and likely read it off the Automated System and got a hit on his arrest and dna off a couple of ied parts inside the envelope and checked with the Florida State agents and they got a pretty good match. You know, its not a total its a pretty close match of under two parts. Thats in the probable cause affidavit and some of the misspellings and his van and they had a pretty good complaint and good criminal complaints and additional charges. Theyre going to flush it out. There is going to be plenty of evidence. The question is did he have any help . Was anybody else with him . Dna inside the bombs, on ied parts, hes integral to it but was he totally alone . So thats got to be flushed out. Malcolm nance, were obviously celebrating good news here and as i said, a lightning fast arrest. What worries you further beyond this case . First for this suspect, you really got to reevaluate your life choices. When you wake up with the Fbi Hostage Rescue Team surrounding you and bringing you in as a terrorist. Thats what he is. What we need to consider right now, as anymore jade, the key part of this investigation, did he act alone . Did he assemble all of these devices . Was he part of a team that assembled these devices . Most worrisome for me was where was the bomb factory and where did he assemble these devices . Is there an entire pile of them left unmailed and were other devices mailed and are now inside the mail stream, still en route to targets and waiting to be found and sorted . This terrorist campaign is not over by any stretch of the imagination until we get those things answered. Ariana berg, i want to play for you an interview that took place tonight. This is the suspects former boss, a restaurant manager. A brief part of the conversation she had on live tv that opens the whole door to the kind of mind where we are talking about it here. Well talk about it on the other side. He definitely beats to the beat of his own drum. He was antigay, antiblack, antijewish. Anybody that wasnt a White Nationalist didnt belong in the world is what he said to me. I really was shell shocked when i found out it was him. I really could not believe it. As far as an employee, he was on time and he was cordial and articulate and i never had any problems with him. There was no theft. My customers liked him. But it was just his political views that scared me. Was he violent . Not at all. There was no violence at all. He made it a point. He knew i was a lesbian and a very proud less ien and he made it a point to tell me that god had made a mistake with me and that i should burn in hell. He would just say that to you, straight to your face . Absolutely. Absolutely. So, counselor, if i appointed you prosecutor of this case i think you would put her on the stand and make special arrangements to drive that van right into the courtroom and get the jury, all of them to go out on the field trip and see it in the parking lot. What else . Absolutely. That van is a roving playbook for the crimes that sayoc was attempting to commit and did commit. All of that evidence is something that prosecutors and Law Enforcement are poring over and looking at to get inside the mind of sayoc. What was motivating and animating him behind these crimes. If we look at the complaint which was the charging document that the Southern District of new york filed, you will notice that remarkably what is not present is about his motivations which are advertised right on his van and twitter account and clearly in his statements to his former boss and other people that know him. But those are the kinds of things that potentially could be charged. There are crimes that would increase his maximum penalties to life imprisonment or more years than he has left alive. Those crimes absolutely look into those political motivations. He could be charged potentially down the road with attempted murder against u. S. Officials in retaliation for the performance of their duties or attempted murder against a former u. S. Official or a Family Member of a former u. S. Official. Again to intimidate or retaliate against them for their political ideologies. This is the clear definition of domestic terrorism, when someone does something in pursuit of a particular political, social or religious agenda. Counselor, it is being tried by your former shop given these devices went all over the place and he was arrested in florida, why the Southern District of new york as a jurisdiction . A lot of times for federal crimes, you need an interstate commerce or interstate nexus because the mails were used. Really that means that most any Federal District could charge it. Southern district of new york is uniquely situated to deal with these types of cases of terrorism and bombings and things like that. The joint Terrorism Task force with the fbi is really second to none in pursuing these cases. We have to remember that we have to remember that even though these packages were mailed from florida and the initial bombs were sent to new york targets, thats enough for new york to take the case. Jim, in your old job, you had to know the pieces of a bomb as well as you did the makeup of the human mind and having said that, what about this guy . What we know about him so far and what he looks like . Hes rumored to have been supporting himself as a dancer for a time. Other people said a truck driver. Whats familiar about this guy to you . Well, hes living in a van down the river. Thank you. Thank you, chris farley, wherever you are. For years and years. I mean really thats what strikes you to start with. And like malcolm said and this is the great intelligent mind he has and where these Law Enforcement in the government would be spinning up Going Forward and malcolm can talk about that. Look, hes living in a van down by the river and yet he made 14 bombs. Those bombs have a lot of tapes and wires and components, glass, explosive materials and you know the timers have to be wired up and attached and everything. There is a place somewhere. We call it a bomb factory. In my experience its a kitchen or a basement or a garage or a closet it could be the van, but it is probably somewhere else. He acquired these materials in moms condo or the back closet or the strip club and there is also a computer. There is a computer and his iphone. Hes googling the addresses of all these targets. Look, brian, you have been in the News Business for a long time. If the other day i asked you joe bidens middle name, i bet you could not tell me. I now know it. And James Clappers middle name is on that bomb. Well, you know you dont come up with those names living in a van down by the river. You got to search that. All those searches came somewhere, so is it a computer at a strip club or a local library or his moms house, somewhere hes doing the search, maybe on his phone and hes looking this stuff up and hes printing it out. We got to find the location. Is there another accomplice . I dont think if we can tell right now. He could have done it alone. When you go to these rallies, i mean there is a bonding with folks. Everybody is in there with red hats and everybody is charged up and getting worked up supporting the president and all this. You could make a connection even if you are a loaner generally. You can make a connection so could he have made a connection of a likeminded person . We dont know the answer. But the agents will fear rit that out and that will be a big answer Going Forward. Was he acting alone, was he the bombmaker in the courier or was he with someone and they both took them to the post office . Malcolm, did we downplay this . It knelt felt in the moment hyperbolic. You start to add this up, you got two president s, youve got a secretary of state and attorney general and first lady and sitting members of congress, there they all are and a billionaire for good measure and an actor. One of these devices went to cnn across town. Was this in your mind a full on assassination attempt . Well, assassination is just one of the techniques that terrorists that are encompassed with terrorism. I call what it was which was a terrorist mail bomb campaign. We dont know what the objectives are, we did not know whether these devices were real or not. We have to assume they are real and work back and let the bomb techs carry out their work. When you see the large expanse of his target set which is by the way is in his head. Thats why i think there are still bombs out there. There are some prominent people that should have been targeted early on. You dont know whats in the mind of the bomber. This was a Broad Campaign to intimidate not just these individuals but the nation. You can arguably say 60 of the nation who sees these people as their champions. So, by targeting them you intended to really go after a large portion of the population which is the definition of terrorism. The president is certainly not responsible for sending suspicious packages to someone no more than Bernie Sanders was responsible for a supporter of his shooting up a baseball practice last year. This being at the hands of the president is ridiculous. Thats how it gets into the bloodstream. It continues tonight when the president mentions Bernie Sanders from the podium at his rally on this day. They arrested the bombing suspect. You would be forgiven right about now for thinking something is wrong with your television or with our national politics. Here with us tonight to talk about all of this is steve schmidt. He is a political veteran of the Bush White House and the mccain president ial campaign. You heard the theory that maybe hillary or obama went down to the post office and maybe Bernie Sanders was with them and maybe they mailed themselves the bombs and heard Rush Limbaugh this afternoon saying the stickers were too symmetrical on the van. They werent faded enough in the florida sung. He was intimating it was all a setup. The investigation that was carried out by the fbi which was diminished by the president since his first day in office. Where does this leave us as a country . It leaves us in a depressing situation, brian, and theres a number of different aspects to it. First, when we look at Rush Limbaugh, one of the avatar of the billion dollar anger industry, the billion dollar conspiracy industry in this country that has infested 30 to 45 of the American People and in large numbers and this terrorist certainly among them, they have become fanatics. They have joined a cult of personality and a cult of shared victimhood. I think it is important to understand the connection between conspiracy and victimization and the constancy of trumps assault on objective truth. For these people is what the leader says is true or direct them to believe is true. This is not fundamentally liberal. It is incompatible with a healthy functioning democratic society. We have arrived at this dark hour because of donald trump. He didnt mail the bomb and he didnt put the stickers on the envelope, but he created the atmosphere where a sick person, a criminal, somebody like this terrorist would actualize trumps clear intent. Trump goes out every day as the tribal chief of a faction thats declared war on the majority of the country. He has called journalists the enemy of the people. He has labeled opponents enemies of the state. He has made a former president , a former opponent enemies of his movement. And this sick person or evil person or maybe a little bit of both decided to become a soldier in trumps army to kill the enemies. And what we saw was the largest mass assassination plot in american history. We havent seen Something Like this since the day Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. These trump rallies brim with menace. He makes violent intimations all the time. He was celebrating the violent assault by a congressman on a journalist just days ago. Anybody who doesnt see the clear connection between the atmosphere and what occurred here has suspended disbelief or is complicit and dishonest or is simply so brainwashed that they have stopped being able to think for themselves. Donald trumps presidency and the cost, the degradation to our civility have come home to roost. And we averted a dimension of good luck and the fact that all the security protocols worked. If in your view, we are in an emergency, because in previous emergencies even as i recall after Hurricane Harvey in texas, all of our living president s and we are fortunate to live in a time when we have so many living president s, members of that small exclusive club, all of our former president s came together to fund raise. The violence, the menace, trump is the singularly greatest demagogue in american history, and he has degraded our culture and the civility in it faster than any person in american history. And it wasnt terrific to begin with. There is a crisis of cowardness and crisis of leadership. We see so few republicans speaking out on what is clearly causation between this sick person and the cult to which he pledged total obedience. When we listen to those people in the earlier segment opting out of reality, believing in the conspiracies, being stoked by the billion dollar propaganda industry, were in trouble. Steve, at the end of another long day and at the end of another eventful week, i note the president once again declared himself a nationalist at a rally. The president paints himself as the victim of unfair Media Coverage in our country. I will give you our former president tonight in wisconsin. What we have not seen before in our public life is politicians just blatantly, repeatedly, shamelessly baldly lying, just making stuff up and calling black white. But that is whats happening. See how i buried a mistruth. I said wisconsin, he was in detroit. Daniel, i want to put on the air a chart you have prepared, a disturbing trend line towards the last bar on the graphic. Explain what our viewers are seeing and why it exists. Thats a chart of President Trumps false claims by week. And that includes everything from big lies to little exaggerations that are still incorrect and what youre seeing is a dramatic increase from the beginning of his presidency to the president. It started really escalating around the end of 2017. In the last four months or so he has setting monthly record after monthly record and in my view it has gotten worse further in the last few weeks and we can quantify that. In the second week of october ending october 14th he made 170 false claims. Thats 37 more than his previous oneweek record. By any measure, quantitatively and qualitatively, his dishonesty is worsening as we proceed to the midterms. How do you watch a rally like tonight . Do you try to keep tabs as he goes and get to the rest of it later. I am on my laptop. The thing is, brian, it gets easier over time because he repeats the same lies over and over. So, you know, you can factcheck it in march of 2017 and literally youre still factchecking it today. The longer he talks the easier the lie factchecking it gets. Talk about the president and whats on teleprompter and what can be the next sentence. When his head turns to the middle of the room, you can tell tell hes off script and sometimes the message varies 180 degrees and sometimes he becomes a different person or character. Absolutely. It can between sentences or you saw this week, earlier in the week he did that rally in wisconsin where he was telepromter trump for most of the rally. There were a couple of moments where he kind of looked to the side and read the stage directs out loud and said, look how good im being. He went from telepromter trump to full on rally trump, giving the people at the rally a show they came for tonight. Daniel, when he is adlibbing, it can mean anger and selfpity and as you have shown hyperbole. Hes got an incredibly crowded schedule of rallies leading up to the midterms. Do you have any reason that the trend line you haved recorded, the last bar graph you ended on is going to keep going . Itll keep going. I dont know hell talk 170 just because he spoke so many words. What we are seeing to me as a selfproported trump lie tracker, these are not usual exaggerations. What he has been doing is making big things up. These are fabrications about immigrations and health care. He told the wall street journal that the tariffs he imposed and bragged about dont exist, what tariffs, we dont have any. I dont think there is any words other than brazen lying. The west wing staff watched him make up a 10 middle class tax cut between now and the midterms. Congress is home. They are recessed until after the election. Thats a physical impossibility. To your day job, tamyra, how are members of the west wing staff reacting to just the verbiage this week . Well, on the 10 tax cut that doesnt exist, there are there were aides that were holding a briefing, a background briefing where their names will not be on the record because it was background briefing and they essentially said, well, the president is the one in the administration who is talking about this. There is only so much they could do and it is really not a change over time. The president has tweeted policies when the policy was not in place yet. He teased things that are coming where apparently no one else knows that they are coming. This is pretty standard for the president. I think one thing we are seeing is we are just seeing so much of him. You know, in the last month or so, he has done more interviews, he has done the press conferences. Every time he comes anywhere near a camera or microphone, he answers questions. President trump is just talking a lot more and when he talks often things he says are simply not true. As i always tell people journalists are the only stars of our show hour after hour and night after night. People who say they have high enthusiasm for voting, and among latinos, 47 . That number was lagging behind other groups. The interesting thing that happened, our new nbc news wall street journal poll out this week, 47 before and check this out. That number has skyrocketed. People latino voters say they have high enthusiasm for voting in the midterms climbs to 24 points to 71 . That was probably the single best piece of news for democrats in our poll. Because democrats think that higher enthusiasm could translate into changing the game in a number of congressional districts. A new poll came out this week from the kind of district, the tenth district in california. The Central Valley, republican incumbent excuse me i thought there was a next slide. Heres the district im talking about. Here he is, jeff denham. New poll out. Here it is, jeff denham. The republican incumbent, large latino population, you see the Central Valley of california and hes now trailing, trailing his democrat opponent by two points. It has a lot to do with this. Josh harder running up a 41point margin over jeff denham. Denham is somebody, a republican who has tried to get to the middle of immigration, tried to distance himself from trump on that. Thought earlier in the cycle he might be in good position in the district but now falling behind in that poll. Not the only district where democrats are hoping thats a factor. Oh, that was not supposed to happen. Let me try that one more time. They hope they can get large latino turnout and energy in the 10th district of california, a couple in the southern part. Maybe the 23rd district in texas, that may have been slipping away, excuse me. That is the seventh in texas. A couple in florida, as well. There are a number of districts where there are republican incumbents and republican seats, large latino populations. Democrats think if theres a surge of energy among latino voters, that could be the difference. The caution well be voicing 12 days from now is 2016.
