Of virginia that will begin licensing samesex couples at this very hour thanks to a surprise move out of the Supreme Court today. That court denying review of all samesex marriage cases. Immediately allowing gay marriages to proceed in five states. Virginia as we mentioned as well as indiana, oklahoma, utah and wisconsin. Gay marriage will be legal in six other states as well included in the federal Appeals Court rulings. The number of states is likely to jump from 19 to 30. Coming up this hour, everything you need to know about this action by the Supreme Court with someone who knows the woman well. She successfully overturned the marriage action. They were arrested at ohare for attempting to travel overseas in support of terrorism. They allege thattenyearold mohamed khan was on his way to i have 18 and istanbul to fight for isis on saturday. Khan is charged to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization. Lets drill down on the top story today. Emerging cases of the ebola virus. Doctors at Nebraska Medical Center provided an update on the free lance camera man. You may recall he arrived back in the states this morning after being diagnosed with ebola on assignment in liberia. His doctors say they are talking to other medical professionals around the world to try to treat him and treat others. Our medical team is in Constant Contact with other colleagues and not just across the United States, but worldwide. This is not just an honor to take care of ebola patients, but an obligation to share it with the Global Community to be used where the disease is hitting hardest in west africa. A lot of obstacles in streeting them. His parents were at the press conference. They will not be able to go anywhere near the patients room, but a glimmer of hope, a small camera is allowing them to video chat with him for the first time. Hooey is enormously relieved to be here. It is still quite frightening, but he is hanging in and sounds very strong. I think he shares in the relief with the rest of his family that he has been able to come back for good medical treatment. Nbcs john yang is following the story for us. Always a pleasure to have you reporting on any subject. He was able to walk off the plane he was on and put on a stretcher and blaised into an ambulance for the ride to Nebraska Medical Center. Does that suggest a positive prognosis. How confident are doctors that he will survive . We heard a lot of confidence from the medical team and his parents. His father is a physician and runs an intensive care unit at a hospital in providence. They talked about not only the confidence from treating rick last month who was now recovering for ebola, but also they talked about the fact that his symptoms are relatively mild, although they are expected to get worse and more importantly that he left liberia and came here for treatment while his symptoms were still mild. His father talked about that. He is only experiencing some nausea right now. They are still assessing him to figure out the course of action and the medical treatment plan that they will discuss with him in the days ahead. But he has now done here for about four hours and continuing that assessment process. Thank you for that update. We appreciate it. Hopes are high for his prognosis, but the condition of thomas eric duncan, the other man diagnosed in texas worsened over the weekend going from serious to critical. Cdc director tom freed in said he is fighting for his and spoke out about the experimental drug, z map this morning. Something else we have not heard about, z map, the syrum that was given to at least two of the patients. Is there more on that and is it more promising your opinion . We dont know if it works, but there is no more of it now. The company is working hard to make more doses. It takes a long time. A reporter with the Dallas Morning News and a former disease detective with the cdc, dr. Yes min, thank you. Why is zmapp not being administered here . There is no zmapp left. This is a drug that may or may not help. Its experimental and has not been proven. All we know is its run out and a company here in texas is in talks with the nih to ramp up production. It can be frustrating. They work in the lab, but they only make a small amount. How do we make many, many thousands so more patients have availability . At this point this was an effective drug or appeared to be effective in the earlier cases. Should that be sufficiently positive to ramp up that spending and manufacturing on this drug . Were dont know. The way we test drugs is rigorous and we have protocols. To say we gave it to a few people and some survives, thats not enough to say the drug worked. There was one individual in europe who received the drug and sadly passed away. We dont know if it was the drug or whether they would have that course anyway. Would they have passed away without zmapp. If they cant get zmapp and it may not be the most effective option. Whats the next step . There is one other experimental drug made by a Company Called tk ebola. When you first give tkm ebola first, it can make them worse. Do we do what we usually do, give supportive treatment and give kid me dialysis and intraveinous flutes. We buy time so their immune system can kick in and fight off the virus for itself. We appreciate that. Its helpful to understand. I will be in dallas all day covering this ebola story at ground zero. That will be for msnbc and this show. We will talk with everybody at the heart of this center and work on separating the fact and fiction swirling around this. See you all then. Up next, another big story here in texas and this one has major repercussions for the rest of the country. Why did 32 abortion clinics in the state close down suddenly at the end of last week. What does it mean for women here. We will ask Cecile Richards next. I sure hope so. With healthcare costs, who knows. Umm. Everyone has retirement questions. So ameriprise created the exclusive confident retirement approach. Now you and your ameripise advisor. Can get the real answers you need. Start building your confident retirement today. Started using gain flings,fe their laundry smells more amazing than ever. sniff uh honey, isnt that the dogs towel . dog noise hey, mi towel, su towel more gain scent, plus oxi boost and febreze for 3 big things in one gain fling. Try with matching we are back live from texas where women are reeling after a federal Appeals Court ruling last thursday for 13 abortion clinics to close immediately. After that ruling, women found previously scheduled appointments canceled. Clinics closed. This after a year long legal battle over a law that forced clinics to get hospital admitting privileges. Now clinics may have to spend up to 3 million to be a socially mini hospital. This latest move upholds the provision that requires abortion clinics be outfitted to meet standards where the woman is merely aborting by taking a pill. Last year there were about 40 facilities providing abortion services. Today there were only eight. Take a look at this map. All of those are in major cities. That leaves them without any access to care they are saying this will appeal their decision. In the meantime, what does it mean for them right now. Thank you for being here, cecile. Your group has a lot on the line with this decision. I want to give it a second to convey the other side of this. A spokesman for greg abbott called it a vindication of the careful deliberation by the Texas Legislature to craft a law to protect the health and safety of texas women. Is there any medical support for the idea that this protects the health of women . Absolutely not. All Major Medical organizations have opposed these rules and regulations. The careful deliberation that happened by governor perry and greg abbott was to try to figure out how to end access to and legal abortion in texas. As of last week they have almost done that. We looked for voices of medical decent on this. If what you are saying is true, your group has a very specific stance on this, but it is true that doctors are saying this is not necessary to protect the health of women and it is a troubling move. Women in the rio grand valley, they will be at least 230 miles from the nearest abortion clinic, a fourhour drive. How do women and particularly poor women who may not have the resources to travel across the state deal with this . We are just beginning to understand the ramifications. Planned parenthood has been preparing this for more than a year given the eventuality of losing this in the courts. With this decision overnight, we had Health Centers close. Many of who had been scheduled to see patients the next morning. These were doctors who had been operating if are years. We had done everything we can to take the patients that were scheduled. You are right. We have women showing up on the the door and we had to triple the call center and receptionists so we can take womens calls. We had women in the rio grand border who were literally turned away overnight and now having to figure out how to make the trek 230 miles to san antonio to get a legal medical procedure. Its outrageous and a lot of women are being harmed. The risk is many of those women may go across the border or otherwise go to back alley set ups where they are not Getting Good Health Care and their lives will be at risk because of this. I want to ask you while i have you here, what can women who are outraged by this and wrestling about this as a Health Challenge do. Today is the deadline to register. Woo are almost four weeks away from a hotly contested race. Should this be a central issue . Absolutely. We heard from folks all over the country who have been writing in. I would say its not only in texas, clearly its a stark contrast. Not only that, every Close Senate Race in the country is being defined by the issues. We have people that are running for office. Cory gardner running in colorado who wants to go to the United States senate who supports personhood, ending access to and legal abortion. Joanie ernst in the state of iowa. Tom tillis running in North Carolina. All of these politicians are running on a platform of ending womens access to and legal abortion. I think texas is a very cautionary tale. This is not theoretical. Real lives of women are being hurt. Anyone who is concerned should make sure they are registering and going to vote this november. You as a group going to be pursuing this as a legal case and do you think you will find this in front of a Supreme Court . The center for reproductive rights has been the Major Organization litigating. We are collecting the stories of what has happened to women as a result of folks who in texas put politics ahead of Womens Health and womens rights. Assembling the stories to make sure if this does get to the Supreme Court, the justices are fully aware of what the ramifications are when you pass these laws that again as you said have nothing to do with Womens Health and only have to do with shutting down providers across the country. I have interviewed the people on the other side that you referenced. Greg abbott and the people in the state. I think on some level there is a desire to protect Womens Health. As you point out and evidence indicates, there is a reason to be skeptical or just the opposite. Thanks, ronan. A quick programming note. Stay tuned today. Alex wagner will be sitting down with wendy davis. Thats at 4 00 p. M. Eastern time. Should be interesting especially in light of the news we were talking about about these clinics. All virginians have a constitutional right to be treated fairly and equally. To have loving committed relationships recognized and respected and to enjoy the blessings of married life. That was Virginia Attorney general a few moments ago on the breaking news out of the Supreme Court and the first day of its turn, that court a few hours ago denied review of any of the five pending cases from various states related to samesex marriage. Heres why it matters. That will become law. This is big. What that means is where samesex marriage is legal, the number of states where it will be legal jumped from 19 all the way to 30. Thanks for following this for us. Break down what it means. Virginia is not nearly not take up any of the cases. That does a couple of things. The parties that challenge the states win they are not going to take the case. Whatever happened in the Appeals Court is left standing. Utah, oklahoma, virginia, indiana and wisconsin, those are struck down and marriage can go ahead in those states. As you noted, they were in three federal circuits. The tenth, the fourth and the seventh. Those Appeals Court rulings are the law of those cirque ults that means that it applies to those that are none the less in the circuits. It wont be immediate. And the court mandates have gone down and we are waiting to see about the indiana in and wisconsin. He said we will follow the law and permit samesex marriages. It will be slower in kansas or North Carolina for them to get up to speed to see whether the state is going to follow the tenth circuit mandate. Pete williams thank you for that update. A lot to understand and important to note, this is not a decision per se, but its worth looking at what prompted it and comes next. There is a thing or two about arguing before the very court. Striking down a key sex of dem a the defense of marriage act that defined a marriage and spouse as to only heterosexual unions. Roberta kaplan joins me now. Thank you, robbie. Explain whats next. The short answer to that is not much. Really only the fifth circuit that has been argued in which there is a spending case. They will be happying to win and there cases that have been argued that are yet to be decided. Im willing to predict that both will affirm that will mean there will be marriage in the circuits as well. All eye are are looking at the fifth circuit done in texas. We mentioned there is no explanation out of the court today. There is unsarktally comments about the courts leanings on gay marriage. Sooner or later it will come to the court. The remarkable thing is how attitudes have changed on the issue. I attribute it to gay people ready to stand up and say who they are. When they do that, people looked around and it was the next door neighbor and it was their childs best friend and even their child. I read it and i hadnt seen that. I had a hard time. For you. I had a hard time cheering as i was listening. What they were getting it and what she predict is that the court should wait to see whether there was any circuit that has a different view and reverses one of the courts that said marriages should happen. What you heard in the explanation, the reason behind that and there is no question its true, what moved this country so forward so fast on this issue is the sense that one day some brave person woke up and got up and said im gay. It wasnt me. Another person did it and another person did it. Everyone knows someone who is gay. What didid and now most americans will live in a place surrounded by married day couples. They will have friends and neighbors and colleagues and coworkers who are married and gay. They will see that they have the same 345er7b8gs and relationships like everyone else. Once that happens, i dont know where we are in the and we are in the ninth inning. Its a time of a lot of change. You mentioned the courage of e dee windsor and its a big moment to look at the case. The reasoning on a legal case of that case may be informing. I think the core principal that comes out of windsor and that we fought hard on is gay people have the same dignity and they have equal dignity of everyone else. They cited that gay people have the right to marry. Of course its not only a legal principal, but a matter of common sense. Of course they do. Of course married gay how manies have the same dignity of everyone else. 19 states have seen that and soon there will be third and very, very soon all of america will see that as a mealt. War are we are watching a Civil Rights Movement play out in realtime. Thank you for all you do on this. Thank you so much. When we come back, a dark subject and less good news. A black flag over eastern cobanny. Just miles from the turkish border. Richard angle is following that question and joins us live from turkey. How close is isis to cobanny . They have taken parts and cobanny is not six miles from the turkish border. It sits on the turkish border. The edge of the town is the surkish border. There were still fighters and they took over the city. Most are kurdish fighters and this is where it might get complicated for turkey. These are kurdish fighters from a militia that is cost il to the government. That Kurdish Militia is in negotiations with turkey to have surkish forces potentially cross the border and help save cobanny from isis. Turkey has conditions for this. Turkey does not want these militias to turn their arms on turkish soldiers. Turkey doesnt want these fighters to maintain aspirations of independence to establish an independent curd stan which is what they want to do and asking that the fighters in this city break ties with other kurdish militi militias. It is a battle that isis is provoking and a battle that for turkey has a lot of domestic political consequences because it opens up this sensitive kurdish issue. What scale of Turkish Military response do you anticipate . Well, the Turkish Military response so far has been almost nothing. There have been troops sent to the area and the ride police are to contain turker and kurdish anger that is flaring up and the troops have been trying to prevent isis from spilling over into turkey. The question where will this go. If it escalates dramatically, you could see Turkish Forces in much larger numbers crossing into syria and invading parts of syria. To do that, turkey has a number of conditions. They want to change the objectives so its not just air strikes against isis and al assad. For turk tow get very militarily involved across the border and take a chunk of syria against isis would have to change. A critical player and that brings with it a lot of complications. Helpful to have your take. Todays developments appear to reveal isis in the face of potential repercussions from the urks and others. I am joined by evan coleman. Whats the worst Case Scenario . Its not great if urk itty gets involved. We would like turkey to be involved, but isis has not messed with the turkish border. There is the prospect that they may try to expand beyond syria and iraq into turkey. Lots of supporters in turkey and one of the main point that foreign fighters have been entering to join isis. The prospect comes that the car might expand further. That is a sirius problem. Flight nonstop from new york and los angeles and a variety of other cities. Evan, i want to turn to isis tactics, something you track all the time. Isis is threatening to execute another american and another personer, peter kasig in this case. Not even the calls of 200 mosques were enough to stop the behe beheading. Is isis at risk of alienating muslims or in the online chatter, is this working . There was a guy who was ticked out after being convicted of insighting his followers. He recorded a speech in which he talked about making it warm with blood. This guy came out with it saying if they murdered him and executed him, they would be creating a great crime and doing terrible catastrophic damage against the concept of jihad. No, there have been a lot of people from curious corners, people that are long time al qaeda idea logs and supporters and hard core demand of the release. Its dramatic. So many around the world are waiting for signs of that. We will be watching and i know you will too. Going back to the situation on the ground. That has been the heart of a lot of this fighting. Other factions and of course uls fighting against the regime in that countrys most pop lift city. Our persons got a surprising look on the ground at a medical Trauma Center that all sides reloi on at the same time. Thats a complicated case to understand. You have isis forces and shia militias and the regime. We are not under the command of any faction. We work with and for everyone. How i work for the military is mostly gunshot wounds or shrapnel on the arms, legs or chest. Any injury including soldiers. We treat soldiers from isis. We even treat assad soldiers and fsa to passengers. He told the leaders of isis the work we do is humanitarian. Anyone who comes here from isis or fsa, we will treat them. Isis agreed not to interfere. This is a very widespread disease here. The reason for the increase is because of garbage. And the lack of cleanliness, people need more personal hygiene. We need critical medicine like antibiotics. We do not have a doctor. We used to have a doctor, but he received a better offer than we could give him. They should provide you critical medicine. Woe have to get everything ourds. It has been like begging. We would accept help from anyone and humanitarian continues. Incredible reporting there. Does this surprise you . Unfortunately not. Whether or not to get involved in syria, heres the example of why. Syria has been a breeding ground for terrible things. There is more than one al qaeda faction. They are fighting each other with the factors active if syria. Thats the reason. This is mushrooming out of control and the fact that we sit around and wait for someone e8s, nobody else is going to get involved. Its not going to change. Evan coleman, appreciate your insights. We have a bit of breaking news on thomas eric done karngs teat bowl la patient here in texas. Hes receiving what texas authorities call an investigational medication for the ebola virus. All of this she hdding a spotlit on experimental treatment and vaccinations. R d going into the quest to find the right answer for ebola and future outbreaks. Vaccine injury awareness month. Thats the name chosen by impassioned vaccine activists trying to draw attention to what they view as a Public Health threat. New data suggests that campaign may be working. Hollywood reporter uncovered this surprising fact. Vaccination rates in many wealthy los angeles schools are now on a par with those of south sudan. Some schools as low as 2 vaccination rates. This conversation has been driven by highprofile hollywood vaccine denouncers like jenny mccarthy. I asked a few other hollywood voices to weigh in. Heres what two actresses and mothers told me at last weekends Global Citizen festival when i asked them whether the antivaccine campaign is overblown. Its something that is its misunderstood by many people. Its a contentious issue. Again, i dont want to preach. People should do what they want but i personally feel very, very lucky to vaccinate my child. Personally, i think its kind of nonsense. But theyre parents and theyre going to make decisions for their children. Well, theres no polio in america because weve been using these vaccines. And theres countries around the world who are so desperate for them. And its really selfish of us to not be taking care of our communities when we have evidence that it works. And we see whats happening in the world when they dont have it. So, im provaccines. You know, to each their own. I dont want to preach. I feel very lucky that personally i was able to vaccinate my child. Several Million People around the world are not able to do that. I take it as im extremely lucky to be able to prevent my child from contracting polio, which almost killed my father. So, its something that im fighting for on an international scale. Thanks for actresses Bridget Moynahan and olivia wilde for their time on that. Joining me now epidemiologist from Rainbow Babies hospital in cleveland. Thank you for joining us, doctor. We cited those stats from Hollywood Reporter saying incredibly low vaccination rates in particularly wealthy schools in los angeles. In your practice do you feel these celebrity antivaccine activists are having an impact . The two women you interviewed, i wanted to say, hallelujah they got it. They understand. Really strong statements saying explicitly, we are pro vaccine. They understand. Let me give you an example. In 1989 in the United States there was a decrease of children who were immunized against measles. We had 55,000 cases of measles that year and 136 people died. This is serious. The problem with trying to scare parents about polio is were three generations out from polio so most people have never seen polio. Then i said to my residents, you know, tell parents about meningitis because people are afraid of meningitis. Now we immunize against influenza b and we dont see that kind of meningitis. We vaccinate for those going into the military and they dont see it so they dont think if doesnt exist. If you have a slow leak on the boat, you bail and bail and bail, you get all the water out, you dont stop bailing because the leak is still there. And the true consequence of that, doctor, is and in some of these schools with these incredibly alarmingly low vaccinate rates were see resure agains of whooping cough, other illnesses that had been subsiding. I want to get your take on the debate. The cdc is retracted a paper about autism in africanamerican boys. That was a big source that was relied on by some of these antivaxxers. How significant a blow is that to that movement . Im not sure that movement actually read the paper. The whole thing with autism is it is a new diagnosis. Not a new condition. When i was training a long time ago, there was no autism. When i was growing up, there was no autism. These children would have been labeled mentally retarded. They would have often been institutionalized. No one would have worked with them. I have a sizeable number of autistic children in my practice. And they do very well in we get them into early intervention. And the parents that i deal with want everything for their children. And they do it. And the children make progress. But no link to vaccinations n your view, looking at the literature . No link. There have been multiple studies. The institute of medicine has done a study. Doctor, thank you for being here.
