Reporting that rice will appeal that suspend handed down by the league and calls are growing for the commissioner Roger Goodell to resign. The leagues response so far is powerfully criticized by sports broadcasters. Its the biggest mistake of Roger Goodells career. He should never have been in the court process. Then you have to be the investigator. Then you have to look into the details. He has other things. He should be concerned with it. He should be the Supreme Court justice. There should not only be a trial water and appellate process, but this is a big mistake and it has to change. Goodell appears to have some support. Jerry jones said he has 100 backing from team owners. In political news, Hillary Clinton returned to iowa for the First Time Since the 2008 president ial campaign. Bill and hillary stopping by retiring senator tom harkins steak fry fundraiser. She was coy about 2016. Of course there is that other thing. It is true, i am thinking about it. But for today that is not why im here. Im here for the steak. The state that handed her a devastating caucus defeat years ago greeted her with ready for hillary signs. Devastating being used for the damage done to a mexican resort town. Odile packed 120 mile an hour winds. The mexican authorities are preparing shelters for 30,000 people in the advance of that storm. Coming up, a special ceremony at the white house. Two vietnam vets awarded the medal of honor. Benny atkins who dragged fellow soldiers to saved after an attack is one of those. He did that despite being wounded himself. Being awarded posthumously, he covered a live grenade to save fellow soldiers, giving his in the process. We will bring that to you live from the white house coming up right on this hour on msnbc. Lets drill down on the global outrage over the most recent isis execution this time of a british aid worker. David haynes was being executed and the video was released sunday. His brother remembered himself as a good man. My first reaction could be one of hatred. My brothers life was not about hatred. It was about love for all men. They are threatening to execute yet another british man next, alan henning. With the steaks building by the day, john kerry met with the iraqi president in paris. Joining us is chief Foreign Correspondent richard engle. What sort of reaction are you hearing from the region to this latest execution . I think if you ask people what they think about the execution or isis, its very easy to come up and say it is an abominati abomination. Something needs to be done. We are hearing this phrase a lot. Something needs to be done about isis. Absolutely something needs to be done. It is a terrorist organization that is controlling a small state of its own in the heart of the mideast and the United States and other countries know what happens when you allow terrorists to have free reign in a sanctuary. The problem is how do you remove this group and when you start examining the issue, you get to the core of the problem. Its not just a terrorist organization, but the result of an unresolved sunni and shiite conflict. You have arab Nations Building a coalition with the United States to remove this organization, this terrorist group. You also have iran and shiite mi lit whys in iraq lining up in another camp to try to deal with the problem. There deep divides here and everyone agrees that isis needs to be removed, but there is not at all a consensus on what happens afterwards. One of the players, turkey, where you are now. Well have to see how all the players feed in. Really appreciate it. Stay safe out there. With the urgent meeting in paris, they are insisting they are making strides towards building that. France offered to help and australia is pledging 600 troops in combat aircraft and from britain, intelligence and logistical support. They have the backing of ten arab nations so far in the fight. Joining me is nicholas burns, ambassador to nato and political affairs. Good to have you back on the program. John kerry is in paris at this meeting. How could this latest execution, this time of a british citizen impact building efforts . I think the crime over the weekend will compel nations to support the coalition, secretary kerry and president obama are doing the right thing by continuing to say we are willing to do strikes to contain the threat, but the challenge is how do you defeat and destroy it. The words that president obama used last week. We need the support of a sunni and arab state. Saudi arabia we are having difficult audio there. We need their support can you hear me . We heard the important point which is valuable that we need support from the arab states. Another thing here is iran claiming on twitter in the last 24 hours he rejected a request from the United States to Work Together and join this coalition passed on by an iraqi ambassador. Saying that iran was never on the table as a potential collaborator. Which rings true to you and do you think the United States needs to be working with iran . What rings true is the american statement. I think secretary kerry is the to be trusted and not the iranian government. We cant align ourselves with the fight against isis. It will lend credence to fear that the United States is essentially supporting the shia against the sunnis. Thats not a credible strategy going forward. We need to have the support of the gulf states in two respects. We need their military support and we also need them to choke off the financing by many citizens of kuwait and the emirates and wealthy people to isis and we need turkeys support, a sunni state because the ji raddy fighters are coming across into the region and turkey is the place where isis is exporting a lot of oil on the black market. A lot of attention has been paid to the military actions, but the diplomatic challenge of forming ail coalition and getting others to support the United States is the most important thing that the Obama Administration is doing and can do. Right. Iran, a powder keg in this and kurkys involvement. Especially with turkey having up to 40 of their nationals being held. Fear is playing into what can happen to them as we try to enlist them. Nick burps, appreciate this. Helpful to get your understanding. Turning to the world of sports. The arrest of adrian peter for child abuse that is sparking intense debate right now. You cant beat a kid to make them do what they want them to do. Thats correct. Thank you. Stay with us for the latest on that fiery debate. We have got an interview with leader nancy pelosi. I asked her about that Domestic Violence problem in the nfl and president ial politics and the war on isis with an important vote that she will feed into. Thats later in the show. Dont go away. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance. Everybody knows that parker. Well. Did you know auctioneers make bad Grocery Store clerks . Thatll be 23. 50. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance. If energy could come from anything . Or if power could go anywhere . Or if light could seek out the dark . What would happen if that happens . Anything. The nfl is weather the worst scandal ever with tough questions about the leagues handling of players charged with abuse off the field. We just learned now that vikings player Adrian Peterson will be playing as normal after his arrest over the weekend whipping his son with a switch or small branch. Now to the question of culture. Im from the south. We do the whipping all the time. Every black parent will be in jail under those circumstances. We have to be careful dictating how people treat their children. It doesnt matter where you are from. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I dont believe that. We spank kids in the south. The question about Adrian Peterson goingover board, we grow up in different environments. Every black parent in the south would be in trouble or in jail under those circumstances. That has not stopped outrage over players facing abuse charges those surrounding ray rice vowing to appeal his suspension for abuse charges. Today Roger Goodell announced a new rule in response to this. The Vice President designed to target Domestic Violence. That has not saved him from calls. They are founding. Goodell earned over 100 million in compensation. Psychologist jeff guardier and National Correspondent has been tracking the story for us. This is Going National and reaching the white house and dennis talked about it over the weekend. Does this make the appeal untenable . These new elements continue to keep this and keep the pressure on this league. Pete arson will be participating in meetings and practices. He is expected to play this weekend. That means next sunday we will be watching the vikings and continuing to have this conversation. We learned that the nfl is trying to get in front of this. Not just with the announcement of that vp of social responsibility, but as personalitias she used to run the sex crimes prosecution in manhattan. Thats a significant hiring. It doesnt calm the outrage and the folk who is flew the goodell must go banner. They told me this morning they will do it next weekend as well. It doesnt change the approach that they are launching their own investigation. Do you see anything more than that happening . The nfl reaches out and i was wondering, who are they going to hire . I could have told you who are they going to hire and throw the money at . We have a new position. Again, i was at met life stadium and its almost depressing. The level of addiction to the game is unbelievable as you go around and talk to women in baltimore and women wearing ray rices jersey. People are saying listen, this is our game. People want their game. Whatever you do to val dade my presence here and we are going to do it. At one level, i think that yes, there is going to be a thing between monday and saturday, but on sunday its really business as usual. Jeff, this latest arrest of Adrian Peterson brings the count of players arrested for some abuse charge to 56. Is that just pulling back the curtain on the general abuse in the population at large or do you think there is a suggestion that there is an elevated rate of this case in the Pro Sports Community . Im not sure about the rate, but this is a sport about violence and how do you turn off that violence when you walk off the field. We are talking about athletes that have been caudled from grade school to high school and a lot of bad behaviors have not been punished. They have been reinforced by looking the other way. Now we see that the chickens come home to roost and there a lot of cases of Domestic Violence and what im not hurring in all of the conversations is lets go beyond just the issues of being aggressive. Whats going on psychologically with the players that they put others at risk physically and put their rep occasions at risk . There is a disconnect and a Mental Health issue and would like to see something in the mix looking at the issues of these players. One thing, i have a lot of emails and its funny how this is a black male professional athlete issue. I have so many emails that jump from ray rice to black professional athletes in basketball are gambling and throwing away their money. Because thats the third rail in the culture. Meanwhile there is a great story we dont have time to deal with. The Atlanta Hawks owner said our problem with attendance is our white fans are afraid of black people. Listen to that. Fear. Too many black folks scaring off white spectateors. Beating a woman. That feeds into the whole thing. We have a Domestic Violence and all of us as professionals, we have to walk this delicate thing with sexual abuse, but as a black man, i wont have it. We are not going to demonize this. About blackness. This is about sexual abuse. Thats why Charles Barkley should not be throwing the robitussin on it and inflaming the idea that all black parents beat their children. The comments about race were criticized immediately. As they should have been. This is more of a generational thing, not a black thing. We know generations past that it was accepted. Cris carter made this point. To use corporal punishment, but we evolve as a people. All people. We know that if we want to enhance the iq points of our children, we discipline them in a way that is smart and not in a way to scare them or traumatize them. Did you have a history of them. I went to catholic school. Enough said. It crosses race lines because it goes back in my family and my very white mother also raised by nuns and rapping on the knuckles. Do you think this is going to filter into the decisions of sponsors. We havent seen a mass exodus, but there calls for it. Until we see 1307bsors and there is an erosion that impacts the bottom line, this conversation frankly is significant and important and the league needs to do something about it. Roger goodell is not going to be going anywhere. What would it take for that . It would take sponsors to say wait a second. This is a lot of money at stake. If pepsico leaves, cocacola will. He believes that 100 of ownerships support Roger Goodell despites the mistakes he made. Jerry jones is facing Sexual Assault himself. Here you are talking about the kettle and the pot. They have their internal investigator who is getting paid by them. Bill, dont sugar coat how you feel about this. Just to conclude that thought, a small franchise sold for 1. 4 billion. You dont think the owners noticed that . The conclusion we are coming to is if anyone wants to change this, it has to be about the com line and the viewership. People need boycott. Peter alexander and jeff gardier, that was a terrific discussion. We hear from Michael Browns father. Part two of my conversation with him as he speaks for the First Time Since his sons funeral about the horror of watching how that crime scene was handled. How hissons body was left on the ground unattended and uncovered for so long. He was treated like he was road kill or someone was hunting a deer. Its monday. A brand new start. Especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. I was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging, could i come up with something better. My doctor told me about eliquis. For three Important Reasons. One, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin, theres no routine blood testing. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. Ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. He found it cleans everything. Whefrom stove tops. Com calls are still mounting for Darren Wilson involved in the shooting death of unarmed teen, Michael Brown. Crowds gathered outside of the jail on saturday demanding the immediate arrest of wilson for that fatal shooting. Among the demonstrators were the parents of Michael Brown. Just before that, i had the chance to sit down and talk with brown family lawyer. Michael brown senior. I asked him if he thought he would Face Criminal Charges for the role he played in hissons death. I dont know, but its worth a try. This is a very difficult topic. The fact that your sons body was left lying uncovered for a long time sparked national outrage. I was torn apart about that. My son was laying out like he was road kill or someone was hunting down a deer. It really bothered me. To have him out there that long and seemed like nobody had no concern. To at least get him up or investigate it faster. It just really tore me up to pieces. So many people around the country are putting themselves in your shoes and imagining exactly how they would react and it is hard to fathom. Are you being treated better by Police Forces now . We had no contact with them. But we believe there is enough evidence out there to affect probable cause where you dont need a grand jury. They can arrest the Police Officer for shooting their son in broad daylight after he had his hands up. They are troubled by that. There is a lot of mistrust with not only mr. Brown and his family, but the Ferguson Community whether they are going to try to sweep the death of his son you should the rug. If you asked a question, what is the relationship like with the local Law Enforcement officers, its very tense because they dont believe they are going to do anything different than they have done in the past. Thats why we are seeing what we see happen in ferguson. Mr. Brown and his family have been dignified in being peaceful. They are very frustrated. So much of the story has been about the community of ferg and how they reacted. Have they been important in helping you through this time . Yes, they have been very supportive. If there is one positive thing that comes out of this very dark situation, what would you hope that would be . What is the one change you would like to see . For this not to happen to no one else. Our thoughts continue to be with the browns. My interview with the father of Michael Brown and attorney benjamin crump. Benjamin crump heads to capitol hill to testify about racial profiling. Coming up next, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is here for an interview is the global threat of isis, hopes and fears and of course controversy swirling around the nfl. Ar a major vote could come as soon as tomorrow to vote on whether or not the trains equipment for fighting isis. According it a poll, 62 of registered voters support u. S. Action against the isis militants. 28 say they are confident that the u. S. Can achieve that goal of eliminating isis. Dennis donough tried to sell the strategy yesterday on cnn. We have a lot at stake in the fight which is why the made the decision he made and is working with allies to make sure we have a durable sustainable coalition. Confidence that can you vet the rebels to the extent that you know they are not going to use it against the u. S. . We have been putting this plan together for sometime and we have committed it to Congress Earlier this year. We have taken it seriously and believe we are ready to go with it. Thats why this vote is so important. And one of the leaders quiting that conversation ahead of this vote, the democrat in congress who stood by the approach as he embarks on a tough sell to the hill. Nancy pelosi joins me now. My pleasure, thank you. The vote would be on title 10 authorization to train the Syrian Opposition members. When is that going to happen and what do expect the out come to be . Are. The republicans control the time table, but we anticipate it will be sometime this week and the out come will be positive. What we have seen so far of the bill, response to the president s request in a substantive way not completely, but in a good way and i believe the vote will be overwhelming. This is a discreet piece about giving the authority to the president for him to and us to engage in training the responsible syrian rebels, but that training takes place outside of syria. Lets look at that question of responsible members of the opposition. In august the president said this. With respect to syria, said the president , the notion that arming the rebels would make a difference and always been a fantasy. This idea to provide light arms or more sophisticated arms to an op kigz made up from pharmacists and so forth. That was never in the cards. How confident are you in the reliability of the partners . Something has changed since then. Isis has changed the dynamic. The questions about who are these people, we know who some of them are now. They must be defeated. That view is shared by leaders in the region as well as our nato partners as well. Without doubt, the urgency of the crisis has changed, but how is the question of the reliability . Do you feel we know more about them now . One of the reasons its important to have the bill passed is so that we can have an organized agenda. Take them out of the country. Syrias vetting of who they are. Thorough training so that they are there to fight isis. They are not there to defend assad. So again, the vetting would ensure these are people who are there for the purpose that we are training them to do the job. It is thoughtful, it is deliberative, it is necessary. Thats why the congress will support it this week. There some Leaders Within that opposition, particularly in the Free Syrian Army saying they will focus on the fight against assad. That will be a tough battle and the vetting will be necessary. We are not a posed to the fighting against assad. But we are not going in there for that fight. We are fighting isis. Some of the people who train will have a dual agenda. Fighting isis and also opposing assad. The question is whether you can turn them sufficiently against the fight against isis at all. That is urgent at this moment. That are is the case. The rational that they are using for air strikes is something i wanted to ask you about. They are saying this is justified under the use of military force since 2001. The administration stressing that this is a different conflict and the actual language of that makes it explicit that this was responsible for the september 11th attacks. Do you think Congress Needs to come back in november and pass a new authorization of the use of force specific to this conflict . It depends on the actions the president takes. I believe and i studied this carefully on the intelligence side that the authorization that the president has now is sufficient for what he is doing now. We did pass a bill, the mcgovern resolution before the august break which had over 300 votes among them that said if the president goes beyond and crosses a threshold of involvement, then we will need a new authorization. I do not believe i know he has not got tone that point. I will say this. Whatever path we go down and however this intensifies, i dont see much support in the country or the congress for any combat troops on the ground. The new authorization may be on the table, but not yet. It will not be for combat troops. We at war . People use the term war on drugs and war on this and war on that. We have initiated hostilities against isis, thats for sure. We are not at war that would require a declaration of war by the congress of the United States. But this is deadly serious. I think the president is to be commended for the deliberative nature. I thought his presentation to the country was excellent in terms of what the challenge is and what the solutions are. Its not just about the military. When you talk about this, its not just about the military, but a conflict that has a political solution. First step the president took was to be part of encouraging a government in iraq that was responsible and inclusive. Vice President Biden deserves a great deal of credit for that. The other part is coalition of the leaders and the nato partners as to the threat that isis has. Some of it is about the politics and the diplomacy. Its no use going into iraq unless there is an inclusive government. The deliberative nature has gotten fallout and it has been a tough road to tread. Interesting to hear you support that. Maybe that caution is necessary here. Rep tentative pelosi, stick around if you can. There is a lot more to go over, including this. Hello, iowa im back that got a big smile from madam leader. The midterms are about two months away, but nobody casts a longer shadow than that former resident of 1600 pennsylvania avenue. Want to feel Natures Energy . Learn to see it through a different set of eyes listen to its sounds and explore all the different sensations. This is nature. See it or not, it always fills you with energy. How much money do you think youll need when you retire . Then we gave each person a ribbon to show how many years that amount might last. I was trying to, like, pull it a little further. [ woman ] got me to 70 years old. Im going to have to rethink this thing. Its hard to imagine how much well need for a retirement that could last 30 years or more. So maybe we need to approach things differently, if we want to be ready for a longer retirement. If we want to be ready for a longer retirement. You owned your car for four you named it brad. But for today, that is not why im here. Im here for the steak. That was Hillary Clinton returning to the state that shattered that inheavy tablt of president ial aspirations. She spoke to about 5,000 Iowa Democrats and reporters at the 37th and final steak fry. She is dominating polls. 53 saying they would back her in the caucuses. Nearly four times the number that supports joe biden. Will hillary be the democratic nominee for president in 2016 . Back now with leader nancy pelosi, its a pleasure to have you here. So sele me first of all, just level with us. Would you support a run . We have to find out if hillary is going to run. She seems ready in iowa at the steak fry. If she decides to run which i think she will, she would be one of the best qualified people to enter the white house. Really she has been a senator and seen firsthand as first lady what the job entails and has been secretary of state and brings so much experience. She just happens to be a woman. She has the substance, but it is interesting in the wake of this latest event, a lot of blow back for how coy she is being. Will it hurt that she has been so coy for so long . She is handleing it correctly. We have an election coming up and many dont know their Midterm Elections, they are so focused on 2016. Very, very important elections. Hopefully to reelect a Democratic Senate to support president obama to make strides in the house and we hope we can work hard for that. Its appropriate for any announcement that was kind to come after the midterms. She said next year that the impression that she would make an announcement next year. She was there to support candidates that are hitting the trail right now. She was there for bruce. Stacy apple who is our candidate in des moines, yes. You are doing everything in your power to get democrats back in power. Have you asked her to help certain candidates . She will be i dont want to make announcements for her, but it is in the Public Domain that she will be doing events for us in the end of september and middle of october and we are excited about that. I can just imagine the excitement generated from that. All of this amount of money and you yourself are an incredible power house fundraiser for candidates is important because of the issues at stake. You have been banging your head against the wall on immigration and not getting much traction. I know you think we could have progress on the issues with different leadership. As a whole, this has been called a do nothing congress. 142 bills passed by this congress down from 906 in 1948s do nothing congress. You can manage this. Do you feel culpability lies with democrats . I dont. Any of this equivalent from both sides, we never treated president bush the way they treat president obama. It would have to get people out to vote. Again, secretary clinton and others, clint and president obama and all of those leaders who are campaigning with us focused on the idea that there is an election. Most dont know that there is a Midterm Election and its not in the universe of things to look forward to. We were talking just how little they fathomed them at stake. So much is at stage in the election. If i could put one word on it, it would be bipartisanship. We can return to a time where we are proud of our beliefs and what we stood for. We wanted to find Common Ground with the other side which is our responsibility and if you cant, you stand your ground. They have said that president obamas failure is their top priority and they will not. Anything he proposeses, thats our time table for that. Again, it is a fact. We just move on for that. We want to give people positive reasons too. We have a jumpstart about creating good paying jobs here in the United States and make it an america about jobs here. Its about when women succeed, america succeeds. Lets talk about that. Thats very much on peoples minds over the weekend with the violence against women act saying republicans voted against that and they need to be called out about that. Ray rice and how that speaks to a larger cultural problem about how we treat women. The issue is about respect or disrespect for women. Whether respect for their ability their own choices for Reproductive Health or equal pay for equal work honoring the value of work that people bring to the table or meeting the needs of women in terms of child care for families and not just women. Should Roger Goodell resign . I do not know. I think the investigation is really important. I understand now that he is appointing women which is positive to review what happened. I think that its important to note that the violence against women act, we celebrate and observe the 20th anniversary on saturday. It has really helped women tremendously. If there is any good thing that could come out of this is that women know that something is there for them. They do not have to put up with this. The fact is also that it took a long time for us to get it reauthorized and the republicans said we will pass a bill and we can protect women against violence unless they are an immigrant woman and a woman of native American Heritage or lgbt women community. Imagine saying you have to leave them out of protections. We have differences of opinion. People like to think its partisanship, but its fundamental differences of opinion. There is never a way we can support their bill that excluded some women from the protections of violence against women act. This happening and exploding the same week as the anniversary. It pulls back on how important that is. Senator gillibrand is on sort of a war path about this. They was suggesting more of a congressional involvement. Take a listen. Have you come to a conclusion about whether you think Roger Goodell ought to just step down . Initially, i want him to lead the reform to create and enforce zero tolerance policy. Given the recent debate, if he lied to the american people, he has to step down, because he wont have the force of authority to change how they address these issues. Is it time for congress to take some action, look into any of this . Well, if the nfl doesnt police themselves, then, you know, we will be looking more into it. I wouldnt be surprised if we have hearings. Well there be hearing, madame leader . I dont know if there will be hearings, but my members would like to have hearings. We had hearings on steroid use. We also have to remember kids look up to these athletes in such an important way. And violence against women, it has no place. And i dont know what will be yielded from a hearing, but there has to be an investigation, as the nfl is conducting one, i hope it s of the caliber that will reveal the facts. And lets just as you said, the curtain has been pulled back. Lets have a different attitude toward how women and have women have an attitude that they are worthy of respect and do not have to take that kind of abuse. Its pervasive. Its not just athletes. Its pervasive. You see someone like joe torre, the baseball, you know, hes so fabulous. His family experienced Domestic Violence. Hes been a champion. Some people could be out there are the men. I dont think anybody has done more than joe torre in that regard. What you just said, theres no place for violence against women i hope receives or against anybody, kids, too. Gets the bipartisan push, which is so much of a novelty these days. I hope so, too. I hope when we talk about violence against women, it includes no violence against lbgt, immigrant women. Nancy pelosi, thank you. My pleasure to be with you. This weeks call to action, were asking to you team up against domestic abuse. Right now at the white house, the president has just begun speaking. Take a listen. More than four decades ago in early 1970, an american squad in vietnam set out on patrol. They marched down a trail past a rice paddy. Shots rang out and splintered the bamboo above their head. Lead soldier tripped a wire, a booby trap, a grenade rolled toward the feet of a 20yearold machine gunner. The pin was pulled and that grenade would explode at any moment. A few years earlier on the other side of the country, deep in the jungle, a small group of americans were crouched on top of a small hill. And it was dark. They were exhausted. The enemy had been pursuing them for days. Now they were surrounded and the enemy was closing in on all sides. Two discreet moments, but today we honor two american soldiers for gallantry above and beyond the call of duty at each of those moments. Specialist donald sloat, who stood above that grenade, and Sergeant MajorBennie Adkins who fought through a ferocious battle and found himself on that jungle hill. Nearly half a century after their acts of valor, a grateful nation bestows upon these men the highest military decoration the medal of honor. Normally this medal must be awarded within a few years of the action, but sometimes even the most extraordinary story can get lost in the fog of war or the passage of time. I especially wanted to welcome members of the medal of honor society, as well as two American Families whose love and pride has never wavered. Don sloat grew up in the heart of oklahoma in a town called coweta. And he grew big. To over 64. He loved football. And played for a year at a junior college. Then he decided to join the army. But when he went to enlist he didnt pass the physical because of high blood pressure. He tried again and again and again. In all, he took the physical maybe seven times. Until he passed. Because don sloat was determined to serve his country. In vietnam don became known as one of the most liked and reliable guys in his company. Twice in his first months his patrol was ambushed. Both times don responded with punishing fire from his machine gun, leaving himself completely vulnerable to the enemy. And both times he was recognized for his bravery. Or as don put it in a letter home, i guess they think im really gung ho or something. And then one morning don and his squad set out on patrol, passed that rice paddie, down that trail, shots rang out. When the lead soldiers foot tripped that wire and set off the booby trap, the grenade rolled right to dons feet. And at that moment he could have run. At that moment he could have ducked for cover. But don did something truly extraordinary. He reached down and picked up that grenade. He went to throw it but there were americans in front of him, behind him, inside the kill zone. So, don held onto
