Dictators, nor will Congressional Republicans punish him for it. Soy for the last two days hes born that out on the world stage, just after he was caught practically winking at russian president vladamir putin to refrain from tampering in our next election, he signals yet again hes good with the globes tyrants, tweeting like old friends do, an invitation to north korean dictator, kim jong un to shake hands and catch up at the Demilitarized Zone between north and south korea. If you do meet kim jong un at the dmz tomorrow, would you step across the border into north korea . Sure, i would. I would feel very comfortable doing that. I would have no problem. While the president has no problem with chumminess, for the rest of us, theres the question of how our political system even responds, a question made more pressing for Congress Ahead of special counsel Robert Muellers testimony next month. Will house speaker, nancy pelosi have what she needs to start an impeachment and will others have what they need to blow this wide open . Joins me, former white house aide under president george h. Bush. Let me ask you, meeting kim jong un, the last meeting they had ended early. Freyed feelings on both sides, it was reported. Now, the apparent chummy invitation. Well see what happens in north korean and south korean time. This chummy witness dictators and tire rants, when he responds to saudi arabia, talking about the money and the trade agreements, when asked about the killing of a journalist that was living here in this country that was from saudi arabia, this kind of chumminess seems to be no problem for selfproclaimed american patriots in the american Republican Party. As a republican, how do you rationalize this . I cant. Republicans need to stand up and say republicans need to stand up for the United States of america and stand up for our allies. In the Perfect World the american president would be standing wake up the nato ally, strengthening a relationship with germany and trans afrance england and the various nations that have been offended the last couple of years. The president has chosen to stand up with vladamir putin and to the prince of saudi arabia, and to kim jong un of north korea. It hasnt helped us make any Real Progress from the standpoint of the United States. The challenge is it certainly has hurt us with our allies. Hurting is with our allies is one part of this, but the other part, again, i remind you, joe watkins is a republican, but on the other part of it, youre looking at the fact, this president even kind of made what could be interpreted as admiring statements about how russia deals with the media when he talked about fake news to mr. Putin, saying you dont have that problem in russia. The implications for that was unsettling for many of us. Unsettling is absolutely the right word. This is we have to step back and remind ourselves every single day, this is not normal. What is happening is not normal. We have president of the United States who consistently time and time again takes the word and the side of vladamir putin over the side of americans, over the word of intelligence agencies in the United States. We have to continue to ask ourselves why. Its frightening, unsettling and its dangerous. We have to continue to keep up the pressure. Joe is right and youre right. We know where President Trump stands right now. The real challenge is republicans arent standing up to him. We have Mitch Mcconnell in the senate currently blocking a bill that came in from the house to help protect democracies and elections in this country. Hes not letting it go through. Is there a lot of enabling and its very unsettling. When you talk about the bill mcconnell is blocking and you have the Supreme Court decision about gerrymandering we will talk about in the show, we are looking at the slow but steady move against a lot of the principles this country professes to be built on, joe. When we deal with the fact, youre talking about meddling in an election. Hes almost like winking it off. Were talking about the fact that we are in threatened trade wars with china and he goes to meetings with heads of state and brings his soninlaw, who is not even cleared with certain clearances, i should say, in terms of security. I mean, its almost like hes mocking the procedures of this country and no one in the Republican Party is calling him on it. No one is calling him on it. Thats right. People are not standing up. I think theyre afraid to, for the most part. A afraid of what . Afraid to lose their position. They saw what happened to the congressman from michigan who stood up and said he thought impeachment was proper and appropriate and now hes going to be primaried. Members of the house and being afraid of primaried. Its about public service. If youre serving the american people, do you whats right for the american people. These rights we have are far too serious for anyone to come along and cast them aside. Our right to vote, Voting Rights, all these things are so important and central to american liberty. For republicans to not stand up and be heard now really hurts the country. Isnt that in effect meaning that this election in 2020 is about a reset on whether we are going to reset the values and what the country stands for or whether were going to accept a new norm that really goes against many of the things that all of us grew up being taught in school, that this is what the principles and the values of this country supposed to stand for . Are we really at that kind of decisive moment in american political history with the 2020 election . Were definitely that kind of decisive moment. Whether the election turns out to be about that or not, its certainly going to be the outcome of the election one way or another, which direction this country is going to go. I think the election itself will be about the issues most animate people right now, continue to be healthcare and the economy and jobs. One of the things that gets neglected in all the chaos and drama of this presidency. The opportunity loss about not having conversations about infrastructure and jobs and things that innovate daytoday jobs right now. Absolutely, the outcome of this election is certainly the most important outcome in my lifetime of elections. It couldnt be more crucial. Bullet number one in the Job Description of president of the United States is to protect and defend the people of the democracies and he is failing every part of that front. Youre looking at a former secretary of state under trump, saying that i wasnt even consulted when jared kushner, his soninlaw, was making diplomatic moves. Were not only talking about him violating what is understood in terms of respecting coequals and congress and the judiciary, even in his own administration there seems to be no line of demarcation in terms of what is appropriate and what is not. The secretary of state not even being cleared other briefed by diplomatic moves to someone married to his daughter . No staffer from the white house should be in charge of what the state department would normally do. And Rex Tillerson called that out and said he felt undercut on a number of occasions in his role as secretary of state. Its not the job of a member of the president s staff to set policy or cut deals behind anybodys back. All these things are supposed to be done in concert with the secretary of state and appropriate people in that department to get these things done on behalf of the United States people. The secretary ought not be undercut. Its dangerous to the american public, it puts all of us in danger when you have even the secretary of state that he selected, President Trump, saying that he was not briefed, he was undermined. Well have more with jess and joe later in the hour. Coming up, joe biden and Bernie Sanders enter this weeks debate as the clear frontrunners. Did they come out of it that way . We talk to surrogates of both campaigns about their performances. How to stay ahead of the pack and to learn about the velocity winner. It was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country, and it was not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing. You know, there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bussed to school everyday. That little girl was me. I heard and i listened to and i respect senator harris, but, you know, we all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on a Campaign Debate exchange cant do justice to a lifetime committed to civil rights. The accusation and the clarification between Kamala Harris and joe biden during and after the second debate night. That moment and the fallout that followed has thrown the former Vice President s campaign into turmoil. Joining me now louisiana chairman and national ko chair for the biden campaign, congressman cedric richmond. I have said everywhere i have nothing but respect for you and your work and i dont think anyone can question it. Youve been not a supporter of civil rights but leader of it as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and others. How do you deal with questions about joe biden, your candidate, not willing to apologize for the boyson statement i tried to get him to deal with last weekend in South Carolina and his response to kamala hair rays in effect said he Kamala Harris that said he does not want to see the federal government to interfere against local statements and those who need the federal government to protect from the state and county governments that may have been doing things that are discriminatory. Thank you for that question. It gives me a chance to clean it up a little bit. First of all, the Vice President s record is very clear hes always supported the federal government stepping in when states or municipalities and School Boards acted in a manner that justified and enacted segregation. He was for busing in those instances. The bigger question, i think what everybody alluded to was the old states rights argument. He has never been for states rights. Whether it was the voting acts right he extended for 25 years that let the federal government sue states and counties and voter offices that discriminated, whether it was the legislation he passed, so that the federal government, the department of justice, could sue Police Departments that had pattern and practice of violating peoples civil rights, especially minorities or whether it was the legislation they did of the executive order they did while in the white house to further desegregate schools in this country. Reverend, i want to be cautious and dont want to be flippant. I respect you. You know, we are friends. If we get caught debating 40 years ago, both cory booker and senator harris, both said in the preface to their question they dont believe Vice President biden is a racist. I dont think anybody in the country believes he is a racist. He was a great Vice President to barack obama. Why are we the question is, if we get so focused on history we will forfeit our future. We have a clear and present danger and racist in the white house and were debating 40 years ago when the Supreme Court is at stake and other things. I want to be very clear what i think the danger of this is when we need to unite the party behind whoever wins so we beat donald trump. I agree with that. I think that clearly, the old arguments about things in the past becomes even prolonged if someone cant just own it and say, i might have misspoke in terms of some of what ive already referred to, the boy something, i might have been i might have characterized things wrong and i didnt intend to do that, i apologize for that. This is where im at. It would have been a one day story. Dont you think his obstinance prolonged the question . I didnt see you questioning him but he has said it had no reference at all. The reference was they called Teddy Kennedy boy and son and refused to call either one of them senator. He started, he said, they called us boy, no, no, no, they didnt call me boy, they called me son and they actually called Teddy Kennedy boy. The point is last year, last term, you saw we passed criminal Justice Reform. Ill tell you, i had to work with the president of the United States, donald trump, who i believe is a racist, who i believe a picks on immigrants and is a bully and those deplorable things. I had to work with him to pass criminal Justice Reform. This month, 4,000 people will go home because i worked with President Trump. I dont like him. I think he is a danger to our future but i had to work with him to get it done. I think that was the point of the story. How it came out is unfortunate. The truth is we have to work with people we dont like and dont necessarily like us either. But if it is to further the goals we believe in, like criminal Justice Reform and extending the Voting Rights act and those things its just what we have to do. All of us have worked with people we didnt like but we didnt say it was civil when youre dealing with outright pronounced racist and segregationists. Let me ask you this, were out of time. How do you assess the former Vice President S Performance on the debate the second night . I thought it was good, if you look at his response to senator harris, it was clear he heard her and felt her emotion in response to his answer. I think the whole country did. I think thats why he took a second to absorb it. Then, as he started to explain his answer, he stopped. One, it was the time, but, two, i think its a slippery slope for him to go back everyday to defend a record from 40 years, when no one on the stage wants to talk about the eight years that he was Vice President to president obama and did a great job, had the president s back. Its unfortunate we keep going back 40 years, but no one wants to talk about his body of work and all the great things they did during the obama years. I think he had a lot of good points that night. I think one thing that was very obvious, everybody said, if elected president , im going to do x. Everything they said the Vice President had already done. Oh. If im elected Vice President were going to join the paris climate accord. Vice President Biden did that. Well, if i get elected, im going to ban assault weapons. Vice President Biden did that also. The only thing they talked about he did not do is they say theyre going to ban private insurance and theyre going to have to raise taxes on working class people to pay for their healthcare plan, and he did not sign onto that because he has plan where you wouldnt raise taxes and people who like their private insurance would keep it. I think he had a solid performance, i really do. Do i think the answer to senator harris question was great . I dont. I dont think theres any answer you could give in 30 seconds to that real emotional moment the senator shared with the entire country. Let me say this. As you said, were friends and if i get into a squeeze and i get into them i would want you defending them. We will agree to disagree on the boy and other statements. Thank you, congressman richmond, chair of the joe biden campaign. Now, joining me, national ko chair for the Bernie Sanders campaign, nina turner. Thank you for being with us. Let me start with where i ended with the congressman. How do you assess your candidateS Performance thursday night. Thanks for having me, rev. The senator was extraordinary. He was the only one on the stage both nights. What i mean by that, the issues the senator has been raising all of his political career was certainly shot up in 2015 and 2016, when he was running for president of the United States of america, all of the candidates on that stage were debating his issues wednesday night and thursday night. The senator had a great two nights of debates. Many felt senator sanders was going to confront the former Vice President. They were in the last polls and polls preceding that, the frontrunners. We never saw him really go after the Vice President. Was that striategic or did that catch you by surprise. Seems like the fire came from senator harris and not senator sanders. Certainly, senator harris was packing the heat and once they got into the debate over segregation, that was pretty much it, mic drop there. Senator sanders is committed to talking about the issues. He did raise the issue in terms of being the only person on that stage and the person that led the charge against unfair trade deals against nafta, tpp, against the trade deals with china standing up. He recently got past a resolution to prohibit this country going to war against yemen. Senator sanders has a proven track record. The congressman, when he talked about what the Vice President did under president obama and how nobody wants to talk about that, you know, president obama is not running right now, Vice President joe biden is running right now. He has to answer for his record, both good, the bad and the ugly. Now, when we look at the polls, which has had your candidate number two, biden way ahead, what happens if the polls come out tomorrow or monday, and your candidate is down and joe biden is down . Many feel a lot of your campaign is threatened by the ascension of elizabeth warren, the senator from massachusetts over whos going to lead the progressives in this country and in reshaping the democratic party. Is your real problem going to be elizabeth warren, who did a very good performance, delivered a very good performance on wednesday night . She did. Polls are snapshots in time, reverend. You know in this game being a candidate for the presidency yourself. When the polls are up, youre delight and when theyre down, they dont count. Were just Getting Started her. The senator has consistently since 2016 to this very moment when polled headtohead with president donald trump, he is the one that can beat president donald trump. He has been consistently polling in that manner. Ultimately, thats what this is all about. Senator sanders was the only one on that stage taking it to President Trump calling him the racist and device serve divisive leader he is for this country. He is the only one that got 400,000 employees in this country, employees at amazon and employees at disneyland a raise automatically. 400,000, by fighting that good fight on the side with activists. The senator, not only does he have the vision, he also has the spine, and more importantly, he has a movement. Because, for him, this is not just simply about winning the white house, it is really about winning over the hearts and the minds of the people in this country and setting the stage, so that this movement of people across this country stands even beyond his candidacy. This is about a political revolution. There is no other candidate on that stage, either wednesday night or thursday night that has a movement, true revolution behind them. Im out of time. One question, yes or no answer. If your candidate is not successful, will he enor does and campaign for the winner of the democratic primaries . Rev, he did it in 2016 with secretary clinton and certainly would do it again. Hes already made that very clear, ultimately this is about defeating the worst president in modern history, that is president donald trump. Thank you, nina turner, national ko chair ncochair fore sanders campaign. Coming up, the Supreme Court made two decisions, one controversial and the second less controversial. First, my memo to President Trump, be right back. P, be righk at panera, our salads with peakseason berries. Creamy avocado. And a dressing fit for a goddess. Come taste what a salad should be. Its pretty cool, isnt it . Theres two of them. Theyre multiplying. No, guys, its me. See, im real. Im real he thinks hes real. Geico. Over 75 years of savings and service. Now for my memo to President Trump, who found time during his state trip this week to clown the first democratic primary debate and, of course, the debuttors themselves, with real mature twitter disses about sleepy joe and crazy bernie and kamala who got too much credit. You called the first night boring, dragging this network for a technical hiccup as if your entire presidency is in the race for a racist matrix. As to our democracy, it wasnt the neatest demonstration but razzledazzle aside, politics, say, like reality tv is unintentionally messy. Yes, it was a crowded field. Yes, it exposed some real divides among democrats on immigration and our Economic Future and, of course, race. But on that last topic, race, i was heartened as ive probably ever been by the baseline understanding of where we are at this moment. Mayor Pete Buttigieg took the incoming fire over Police Shootings of black residents on his watch. He didnt then nor did he spew up some platitude to degrade his base. Former Vice President joe biden, now fully aware of just how post racial we are not, mixed it up with senator Kamala Harris over his comments working with segregationists. Yes, he was staggered by the uppercut but he stayed on his feet and didnt open up some canned response. For the last three years, mr. President , i declare youve been trolling black america, touting our assumed good fortune under your presidency, while calling black women dogs, black countries solds and black athletes, sobs. In the last few months you pushed the fiction that black voters will turn up to make america to hate again. If were honest, your africanamerican outreach has always been about reaching out to white voter conservatives already dismissive of racial sensitivity, except for their boogeyman of reverse discrimination. Whoever takes you on next year, she or he will have done the work of listening to actual voters, not performers of color. Millions of them, black as they may be, mr. Welcome back. This week, we saw our democracy dodge one bullet just to get wounded by another. When the u. S. Supreme court ruled against the addition of the Trump Administrations proposed Citizenship Question to the 2020 census, which the president is now trying to delay, but also ruled in favor of allowing gerry manned voting maps to stay on the books in maryland and in north carolina, where the states republican dominated legislature has been rightly criticized for drawing the electoral maps that discriminate against voters of color, a practice now that much more likely to continue with the high courts decision, and the census poised to open up new fights over representation, that is of course if perspectireside allows us to have one. Joining me now, the director of Lawyers Committee for Citizen Rights and National Political director of the indivisible project. Let me go to you first, christian. Certainly, weve talked a lot about the debates and my calling on mr. Biden to apologizing about segregation. But i dont want our viewers to miss these two very important decisions the Supreme Court made. The decision on gerrymandering is frightening to many of us in the civil rights community. Youve been out front on that. Explain why this is such a critical decision and what are the ramifications of it . These are two blockbuster rulings that really have tremendous impact on the future of american democracy. Lets start first with the courts ruling on gerrymandering. The Supreme Court this week issued a green light for partisan gerry plannedering, knot just partisan gerrymandering, extreme partisan gerrymandering. It could not be any clearer in this case. In north carolina, republicans made up about 30 of the population but elected 10 of 13 congressional seats because of the way they intentionally and deliberately gerrymandered the maps. In maryland on the flip side, democrats made up about 65 of the electorate and elected about 7 of 8 of the congressional seats. Those were the facts before the court in this case and the Supreme Court punted and said, we cant come up with a standard of telling lawmakers when theyre crossing the line. What this means in 2020, we will see the floodgates of gerrymandering opening up all across the country. Looming over all of this is the fact congress has failed to yet restore section 5 of the Voting Rights act. In a number of states around the country they will be doing it for the first time without submitting the maps for preview. They dont have to get clearance from the justice department, the Supreme Court has given a green line on that. We can lose representation from blacks and browns from the congress in the state legislature because they can draw those maps to really consolidate them in less districts and all in those districts and expand other districts and have less people of color or less people of another Political Party . Its its a recipe that spells disaster. Its critical they get started from day one, policing the process and making sure our voice is heard and making sure we push back against lawmakers when they attempt to gerrymander maps. Justice kagan offered a very powerful dissent when she talked about how big data and lawmakers have bad incentives, ability to turbocharge partisan redistricting. It truly is a disaster for american democracy. When i look at the Citizenship Question, maria, explain why that is such a danger. It has been delayed, not really ruled against. Why is that a danger to the democratic principles of this country in terms of how it will affect resources and how it will affect other things that will enchane even change many of the services and goods for american citizens in those districts. Yes. Its a massive danger to all americans but especially immigrant communities specifically being targeted here. This is not new for the Trump Administration and his allies. They clearly have had immigrants, latin people and immigrants in their crosshairs and want to make sure we dont feel welcome here in this country or feel at home here. No voter example is the census where everyone should be counted. This effort is a sham and the Supreme Court said it was a sham, and is a sham because it specifically was saying it is politically motivated. We have to be clear of our communities, we should not be afraid of this administration, we should feel strong and powerful and rooted in what were doing, being counted and make sure this does not have lasting effects in latino and all immigrant communities across the country, because we deserve to be counted in a country we call home. It will not therefore given the time they start printing the census questions, it is not likely this can be relit gait before the 2020 elections. Relitigated. But it can come back in the future, is that right, maria . Thats correct. We want to make sure this constitutionally count happens on time and the administration said previously the printing should have begun in july of 2019. This administration can say whatever it wants to say, whats clear, constitutionally Everyone Needs to be counted in this country every 10 years. What were seeing now is the new York City Court will take this up, and we know we want to encourage again. The main point is we need to encourage communities and not let ourselves buy into this sham, this effort to disenfranchise and effort to make us feel unwelcome and invisible. Christen, with this new ruling on gerrymandering, were going back to that, i want you to get this point in, it is also very important people vote and vote for the state legislators office, not just president , because that is where the battle will be when they draw these lines, those legislators on a state level will have a lot to do with it. If theyre not facing primaries, theres no telling how wild they will try to draw these lines. Thats right. We show up and show our power at the ballot box. Then, its important we hold our lawmakers accountable. Remember, redistricting happens at every level of democracy, local maps, county maps, city, state and federal maps are all up for grabs. Citizens play an Important Role in showing up, making sure theyre at the hearings, making sure theyre offering their own alternative maps and pushing back against gerrymandered maps. The Supreme Court ruling this week is absolutely a stetback. To tie this to the census, important to stand up and be counted. Unless we have fair and accurate census data we wont have the ground Building Blocks we need to insure we can produce fair and accurate maps that show the way the population has changed across the country over the past decade. All right, kristen and maria, thank you for being with us. With the first debate in the books, what are some of the biggest takeaways from the event . Thats next. Well be right back. Well be right back. Honey have you seen my glasses . Ive always had a knack for finding things. Colon cancer, to be exact. And i find it noninvasively. No need for time off or special prep. The first round of the 2020 democratic debates is in the books. There were a few clear winners and losers. But for the most of the candidates, it was an opportunity to hone their message and learn from the experience. What can those candidates do in the next debate to stand out from the pack . Back with me, political strategist, jess odonald and joe watkins. Jess, ive made it clear, my view, i wish joe biden would apologize. I think it was insensitive. I think liz warren had a good night, others had good nights, certainly julian castro. But lets look at the next debate a month from now in detroit. What do you think the candidates that did not do well ought to do and those that just sort of gave their vision and resume, what should they do in this second round . Well, its hard to stand out. You were there, i was there in miami. Youve got 20 candidates two nights. Its hard to kind of have a moment. I think Kamala Harris did great. Julian warren, Pete Buttigieg, and liz warren were the winners of this particular debate. I think for detroit, some of these candidates including the Vice President are going to have to sharpen up some of their answers. Were living in a different time. Some of these folks on the stage havent done a debate at this level. Others have, but things are moving fast and theyre going of to sharpen up their answers around things and get really clear on specifics. And i think its got to be about the future and their vision for the future. I think, you know, some people are going to land some moments and some punches, but at the end of the day, americans are looking to really hear what is next . What is an alternative to what we are living through right now under this Trump Administration . Joe, as i sat there at the debates, i also was thinking, who came off that they would be detailed enough with policy, but Strong Enough in performance to go up against donald trump if theyre the nominee. Dont you think they have to have both visions, that they have to show that they are more thoughtful and able to run government than donald trump . But that they also have the backbone to stand up to him if theyre debating him one on one as a democratic nominee . Absolutely. Absolutely. Whoever nominee is, has to be able to mix it up with donald trump on the stage, when they have their big debate or several debates in the fall of 2020. And i thought that probably the best candidates, certainly on the second night were Pete Buttigieg, not necessarily in this order, by the way, but Kamala Harris. I thought that they showed the capacity to provide detail as well as the ability to pivot quickly and also to talk in a passionate way. They really connected with the audience. And i dont discount the performance of the Vice President. Hes got certainly a long history and a sturdy history, having been the Vice President of our first africanamerican president. But i thought that Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg were probably the sharpest in that regard. All right, jess and joe, we appreciate your time. Up next, my final thoughts. Not this john smith. James alex fields jr. , the young neonazi who murdered Heather Heyer in charlottesville, virginia, two years ago has been sentenced to life in prison for federal hate crime charges. Certainly, that was, in my opinion, the right decision. But we must also look at the hate that he symbolized, that he practiced. And the crowd of haters that may not have been as murderous and may not have been as reckless as he was, but had the same hate and the same reason that they were there. We cannot duck the issue of antisemitism, racism, homophobia, and xenophobia, particularly in an era where people like this exist and whether it is in charleston, South Carolina, against blacks in a bible class or against jews marching to say that a statue of a confederate general guilty of racism, supporting slavery, and of treason should be removed from the public paying for his care of a statue, we cannot separate them, we must fight hate and bigotry no matter where it is. Tomorrow in new york will be the gay pride march. There are still homophobics that have that kind of hate. Any hate justifies other hate. You cant fight for the civil rights and the decent and humane treatment of you if you dont fight it for everyone. Civil rights is not something that you can decide to franchise out. It must be the order of the day. And the criminal justice must stand up and punish those that violate the law. It may not be as far as murder, but it may be an institutional bigotry and it may be a judicial bigotry. All of us wrong and all of us must face the even hand of the law. That does it for me. Thanks for watching. Ill see you back here tomorrow night at 5 00 p. M. Eastern for a new live edition of politics nation. Up next, deadline white house with my friend and colleague, nicole wallace. Hi, everyone. Its 4 00 in new york. The president ial aspirations of the twoyear veteran of the senate, from california, Kamala Harris, have been turbo charged by a powerful debate performance last night in miami. And for all of the talk in the hours since that debate concluded about her standoff with democratic frontrunner joe biden, there were several moments that showcased harris strength and clarity around three issues central to the democratic primary and the debates roiling the nation. First, heres senator harris bringing the entire debate back to Kitchen Table issues. Senator harris, im so sorry. We will let all of you speak. Senator harris
