Children and more than 320,000 pregnant women is in jeopardy unless a break through is reached by mark. 1. 3 million at the duty military personnel may go without pay by months end. 17 of them are black. At the shutdown, more than 700,000 undocumented immigrants whose faiths remain unclear as the congressional fight over daca continues. Whos steering the pot but President Trump who helicopters to tweet in a tag of democrats instead of being the voice of reasons and calm. Having known the man personally for 30 years, i find none of that is surprising. Joining me now is michael steel, a republican strategist, who worked as an adviser for jeb bush and House Speaker john boehner and our washington post, let me go to to you, michael first. I have known President Trump or 30 years. I met him when he was working with democrats, i always knew he was not the master of the art of the deal. Here we are where the president of the United States meets with senator schumer for 90minute and on the anniversary of his inauguration, cannot keep the government open. As a republican, are you a little bit shame of your president . Of course. I think there is no question, our efforts to get to an agreement to protect these folks and improve Border Security have been more difficult because the president cannot seem to come to one position and stick with it for the entire meeting let alone the entire day. I think there is no question that there is a lot of disappointment and the best way to go forward is to reopen the government and make sure that we get the funding to the troops and feels fields and continue to work in a bipartisan way on capitol hill and get a solution for dreamers. Why cannot mcconnell do that . Why cannot we do what you are saying . A bipartisan vote in the house and Senate Earlier this week would have kepts t the government open and done exactly that. There were republicans also voted that way. There were four republicans but none of them decided to invoke closures. It would have passed if Senate Democrats did not use the rule of citizens. Let me go to you peter. At the heart of this is daca, one of the arguments the president have been using, i think overly using is that this is about letting Illegal Immigrants in our border, theyre coming to get us kind of thing. How do you respond to that . I use youto think there is s truth of his sincerity. This is not about illegal immigration or daca. One of the messages is they add billions of dollars to the u. S. Treasury. How . Because they pay taxes. We are talking about tax paying people. Tax paying people and theyre going to add if we take them away, the deficit is going to go up. I think this is about legal i am dpra immigration. They want to cut down on immigration. Again, it flies in the face of facts. We got a falling birthrate. We need immigrants in the country to help build america as they did when we first settled this country and second, pay taxes. Let me push a little on that peter. When you say his reference to norway means really he just wants white immigration, really. You are bringing race into this and clearly everyone on the right always blames me for race but here is a white economist saying that you feel that race is part of the core of the argument. We just need to go back and play the tape of trump talking about race in this country back even when you knew him in new york city. It is clear to me, there is no alleged kmepcomments that trump made. He selfadmitted that he has a problem with people of color. I dont think theyre anywhere near what we have seen o ut of our President Trump as one, you are one that worked with both of them. How does the Republican Party establish this . And those that are considered moderate, how do they reconcile working with this president in times of urgency like now when you have the government closed and we are looking as i started to show with thousands upon thousands of people that are impacted by this. How do the republican establishment deal with it . Do they out right the announcement or try to make sense and go around them zp man make things work. I almost sympathize with you guys because you are in a procurement position that either way there seems to be a risky outcome. Yeah, i think there is no question that the president holds views that are well outside the mainstream of republicans when it comes to restricted immigration policies. What republicans, establishmen s establishments, get trips funded and get the money for our government and continue to protect our dreamers so we dont have the negative economic impact. So that our economy keeps oncoming along and creating more jobs and making life better for our people. Peter, how do you respond to that in. This is de secretary defensee cannot we need budgets. Right. For three years, there is been no budget. The republicans own the house and there is presidency. Three years and still no message. A moment ago, the president tweeted, i am quoting his tweet. The dems just want illegal i am dprants to pour into our nation. The republicans should go on 51 . Hes saying go flunuclear and change the rule. It is not what a lot of republicans said before. How do you respond to the president s tweet and i dont know if hes watching me this morning . We certainly hope so. I reserve my opinion on that. He would learn something if he watched this. There is two issues here. Longterm spending deal is close to the senate. The second issue is the issue of the filibuster in the senate having worked in the minority and congress, i believe that our constitution offers protection to the minority in congress. Thats a good thing. We need to preserve that. We have to recognize that this moment, the reason the government is shut down because Senate Democrats used those rights in the minority to block the spending bill that would have kept our government open and funded our troops and the Health Program for our childr childrens program. Is that true that the government is shutdown. Speaktrictly speaking, yes, thats not the pecktuicture. If we are concerned of the childrens health, it ran out in september. Why didnt the republicans do something in october or november or december . So now we are looking at the 20th government shut down since 1976. Eight of those are more than a week. So consequently, this talk of bipartisan ship, where us the by partisan ship . There is no i have known the president for 30 years. The reason we have a shutdown was when schumer and President Trump sat down and came to him. Schumer should have stayed in the room and cannot leave him because if you leave him, he will change his mind. He cannot hold a position and does not believe pin in it. Thank you, michael and peter. Should black members of Congress BoycottPresident Trumps state of the union address. Well be right back, this is politics nationme. At is more. Oh, theres more. Mobile id cards, emergency roadside service. More technology. I can even add a new driver. Right from her phone geico. Expect great savings and a whole lot more. The winter of 77. Uring i first met james in 5th grade. We got married after college. And had twin boys. But then one night, a truck didnt stop. But thanks to our forester, neither did our story. And thats why well always drive a subaru. We have members who feel very strongly that when you see racism, uconn front it directly, straight on and you look at it in its eye. We have members who say hes not worried of listening to a president continuing his rhetoric. Some members decided theyll boycott. As a body, we have dot taken a position of what we are going to do. President trump helicoptcontinu overseas and here at home. As the Congressional Black Caucus found a group of repewuation. Democratic florida, congresswoman Fredricka Wilson who sparled over this. Join her with john lewis and Maxine Waters this week in announcing that she will boycott the address which she says will be a quote full of empty promises and lies. Strong stuff from a strong woman. Joining me now is florida congresswoman, Fredricka Wilson. Congresswoman, you said you are boycotting because it will be full of innuendos and empty promises. You are not going. So say no matter who the president is, members of congress ought to respect them and go. Why are you joining three or four of your colleagues in this bold step. Good morning reverend al. I have a footprint in mother land that i started four years ago would bring back our girls. I have a soldier from my district who was killed in africa. So thats our mother land. Thats a place that i feel so insulted when he called us us shitholes. I represent so many haitians, they are my friends and coworkers and students. I am africa. So i cannot sit and watch the president and give him that honor. I believe the state of the Union Message is an honor that is afforded the president by the speaker who invites him to deliver in the state of the union. I dont want to give him that. Thats just me personally. Ncongressman, let me go back to what you said. You talked about the young women that you stood up for. That will victimize by boko haram a group in africa terrorists that had connection with isis. Talk about la david johnson, he was killed doing military duties for the u. S. In niger. You stood up for that family and talked about the call to his widow. And all of us trying to stand for you and with you while you under threat and i talked to his widow and his family members who were grateful that you stood up. They were brokenhearted because their loved ones was killed in africa. What kind of tone does it set when the president calls haitians and plaqblacks shole stuff. Does it set a climate that it is more dangerous for them and less produ productive . Africa is an american economy. That continent is emerging and e wi we know that. We have to depend on africa for security and trades. When all terrorists leaving to the east, theyre going to africa. We have to maintain friendship with africa. President trump called oharri right after he was elected, pledging his support and gave them information to buy weapons. For him to insult this entire continent and endanger us as an economy and it is wrong. We have to stand up to him and tell him that you cannot just do that, we are not allowed you to do that. I am not going listen. What message do you and other other than boycotting. What message it will send to the American Public and the World Committee that well see those empty seats there when he enters that chamber. I think it is send a message and i am just talking about my seat. In my seat, i want him to send a message thatparaging my native and a continent that we know our whole National Security dependant on and in sasulted th people of africa. In stultssulted all of our frie neighbors who are haitian americans. I will not give him the honor of sitting there listening to him because i dont think he deserves my presence. So that, very clear, this is not about a partisan decision because there is something that says well, no matter what party is in and what policies are in. Both sides of the isle should respect the president. This is about bigotry and rac m racism. You are saying he insulted people based on who they are and based on their nationality and there are just which you and i share. Based on their race. It is clear to me that i dont feel comfortable going. I will not give him that honor. I dont want to go. I will not go. I thought about it and prayed about it because i want to do the right thing for my constituents and i truly feel that my cons wetituents agreed many. I know you an amazing woman. How is the family . She was suffering and on the sharing these statements only rekindle the pain of her husband having died in the military service in africa. Shes doing good. The babies are due ton 29th of the month. While, she was pregnant while she was killed. We completed the 800,000 Scholarship Fund that we established through the 5,000 role model for the young children. So, shes doing good as best can be expected of a young widow trying to get through all of this and work, her husband was killed that the president called him a shithole, thats not right. I have to leave it there, thank you congresswoman wilson. Up next, taking credit for someone elses work. Thats what President Trump is good at doing. What that is and why i will take personal events. Well be right back. There are two types of people in the world. Those who fear the future. And those who embrace it. The future is for the unafraid. Less than a week after her boss alleged shole comments about predominantly black countries. It was senator booker of new jersey who had a criticism of secretary nelson explaining that her insistent quote, tough language was brought by the president and his description of those countries made her co complacite. Our senators, the soul black members of the Judicial Committee cautioned secretary nelson that this Administration Strategic silence on racing violent and racist is just as damage of this. On that same date, we saw a new report from the Antidefamation League confirming of those of us in past year that while the threat of foreign terror attack against the United States, we main worthy of prioratiity. With white supremiists responsible for twice as many murder for 2017 as they were in 2016. 18 in total and 157 increase in just one year. Double the number of deaths by caused domestic islamic extremist. The Trump White House helicopters to engage in this race of the economy. Taking credits of his black predecessor while gas lighting the entire black diaspora again and again. All the time insisted that his relationship with black voters is not only positive but getting b better. The absence of any clear truth. Talk about absences is not the absence of a white road that determines whether or not the president or any president is promoting racism. Instead, it is the white house, he occupies and continues to use to determine whos forward and whos just a fine person, a very fine person. President trump takes credit for this. I got you. Needles. Essential for vinyl, but maybe not for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Because there are options. Like an unjectionâ„¢. Xeljanz xr. But for you, one pill a day may provide symptom relief. Ask your doctor about xeljanz xr. An unjectionâ„¢. Something i am really proud of because i have been saying it. What do you have to lose . Africanamerican unemployment is at its lowest level ever recorded. That was President Trump thursday continuing as i suggested before the break to ride the cocktail of his predecessor and claiming his policies are to be thank for the record low unemployment numbers against black americans. A fallacy easily dissolves when you lock at when the strend sta trend started. Joining me now, our former secretary labor, under president obama, seth harris, thank you. Lets go right to it. President trump is trying to tell people that he is responsible for record low africanamerican unemployment, is that any way, shape, or form or possibly . We had 87 consecutive months of job growth. You may remember you and i used to talk of the job numbers back when i was president obamas secretary. You used to go on my radio show every month, i remember. Absolutely right. We had longterm recovery from the great succession. President trump led be he was helped by congress to pass the largest bill in americas history. It is important to know President Trump is talking about how low it is. It is true and still almost double. The unemployment of white americans. We still have structural problem in our economy that is causing our Americans Still in a disadvantage. I see no evidence at all that President Trump is doing the hard work thats required to fix that problem. Now, we saw the decline. First, president obama came in and the whole economy was on shaky grounds. We recovered the economy and brought unemployment down and brought africanamerican employees way down. There trump inherit an economy that was in full recovery for black and white from president obama. Now, hes taking credit for picking up somebody at the end of the trip that somebody drove the trip. At the same time, he has no plans and in fact, as created a climate that would never ever make black unemployment a. He said candidly that he has no agenda for backs. His agenda is what do you have to lose . I guess civil rights hes everything when you had to face a double standard. You are exactly right. There is no agenda for the africans and if you look at the tax bill that President Trump is taking credit for, 80 of the benefits of that bill flow to the wealthiest americans and wealthy corporations. We are seeing evidence that those cooperations are not going to take them money. Hes going to borrow it from the chinese and handle it to south korea. What we need more than anything else is for High School Graduates with folks to be able to get a job and support their family and allowed them to save money for retirement and allow them some kind of job security. We could get that with investments in the public sectors putting people to work as emt and firefighters and nurses and teachers. We can do it with investments and infrastructure. The president promised us a trillion dollars investment and infrastructure. We have not heard a word about it. We have not seen whether they are going to use minority on firms including africanamerican firms. Whether or not theyll be targeted in areas where we need infrastructure and redevelopment in black communities. Where is the infrastructure. So while hes doing all this, nixon had a black capitalism plant, reagan and bush and bush jr. , they all have a black agenda they they would put out. There is no agenda here, it is all empty rhetoric. I agree with you completely rev, in our hometown of new york. There was a proposal for a new h hutson river. You cannot get trains over because of the out dated tunnel they are using. Donald trump is not going to provide the money thats necessary for that plan. Thats the place where you can put a lot of africans and americans to a lot of low waged workers. He knows about it because it used to have the names right in the building. Those meetings are saying please take his name down. Why put money there when you can just take credit for the guy that did everything you are taken credit for. Thank you. Thats precisely right. Thank you secretary. Good to talk to you. Good to see you. Coming up, while President Trump talks to prison reforms. I will tell you where our hopes finally realized and not in washington. This is politics nation. A type of irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem. But whatever trail i take, i go for my best. So if theres Something Better than warfarin, ill go for that too. Eliquis. Eliquis reduced the risk of stroke better than warfarin, plus had less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis had both. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Im still going for my best. And for eliquis ask your doctor about eliquis. I cannot imagine managing my diabetes without my dexcom. President trump held a listening session earlier at the white house and despite cautiously compassionate language that you just heard, hes justice have put androgen agenda for the republicans. The Resistance Continues at the local level. Newly elected, larry crassna who come pained last year as joined the growing ranks of reform oriented prosecutors in chance of reducing the number of americans booiehind bar. I spoke to larry kraft. Tell us what it means to enforce the law and be aggressive about the things that leads to some people incarceration and at the same time have a real Reform Movement around the levels of incarcerated population. Well, what it means, first of all is not viewing these things as a contradiction. We know poor education causes crimes. The lack of treatment from people suffering from addiction causes crime. We know lack of development and job training causes crime. We know these things. So, these are not contradictions. It is a question of where you are putting your resources. We node to put now you heardd you that i talked about the growing resistance at a dproeing level with some reform oriented prosecutors like yourself, what is the big difference between would you and others are doing at a local level and what is now the National Team o ut ut of cut administration and washington. Well, if you look at some of these great prosecutors and a couple of them are kim fox in chicago and Erika Gonzalez in brooklyn. What you are going to see is their watches are on time. If you look to the national authorities, what you are going to see is their watch is about stuck at 1954. We are dealing with an administration thats such a throw back to a time that was abusing the criminal system to promote their own politics through a politics of fears rather than doing anything constructive for the nation. I would like to thank and Corpus Cristi and so many others of these progressive attorneys simply have watches at work. One of the things you have had to combat is some that have been led to believe this is soft on crime. It is a way of dealing with criminal behavior in a way that protects the public and at the same time does not really violate peoples rights as well as peoples ability to reform themselves. I could not agree more. I think one of the best examples of this is if we look at the science and not the rhetoric, what you find is that it is a really times when they are either finding nothing, 49 out of 50 times or finding important. Those who are poor or black or brown, those are humiliations and ways of driving an edge between Law Enforcement and the people they are there to protect. The fact is, many of those good Police Officers dont want to do it but they are made to do it and we cant solve homicides because there is such a division between the people that have the information about shootings that have occurred or may occur and the officers that protect them that the information is not shared that may prevent crimes all for the sake of a very d tactic, stop and frisk thats almost useless. That is my view of this. This is not either or. Doing things the right way, the just way is safer. Its not a choice, its a yes. I know in new york, as you know, the stop and frisk has gone down to almost many, many, many, degrees to where it was. I was one of the ones at the forefront of that. Crime is as low as its been in the 1950s. Again, scientific proof that it does not, in fact, increase crime, it helps bring crime down. What exactly the things youre trying to invinovate in philadelphia . Well, there are so many things were trying to innovate but we have to bring about cultural change within the office. This is still a city where frank rissos statute and shadow loom large. He was the Police Officer who became the Police Commissioner that became the mayor and in many ways this town has been run in a somewhat brutal and somewhat racist way with a little bit too much power in the police department. That power has often controlled the d. A. s office. The d. A. s office is a check. It is a check on the power of the police and also a check on crime but it is certainly not the exact same thing as the police department. So that culture has to be changed and then of course, there are a lot of specifics that can lower our levels of incarcerati incarceration, increase diversion so people arent convicted and have an employable future and cash bail that can move away from civil asset forfeit that resulted in grandmothers losing homes because their grandchild sold wood. I think we have a very, very Bright Future if we move in this progressive modern direction, we will be looking good in a few years. Have you faced resistance in initiating these things and how have you handled it . Obviously, you won the election but i would imagine resistance to reform is always something that is expected. Well, we face it in the usual way and we faced it in the usual way during the campaign. You go from being ignored to laughed it. Change is hard. Its always hard. Its always been hard. Its a positive and constructive thing. My mother used to say they wasnt really doing it right unless i was angrying up the devil. Its okay. Resistance is okay. People can push back. I want their views to be heard because im a great believer in free speech, but this is a battle that we are going to win because time is on our side. All right. Ill leave it there. Thank you philadelphia d. A. Thank you for being with us. Real pleasure. Up next, my final thoughts. Stay with us. It takes a lot of work but i really love it. Im on the move all day long. And sometimes, i dont eat the way i should. So, i drink boost to get the nutrition im missing. Boost high protein nutritional drink has 15 grams of protein to help maintain muscle and 26 essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium and vitamin d. All with a great taste. Boost gives me everything i need. To be up for doing what i love. Boost high protein be up for it yes, todays the first Year Anniversary of President Trumps inauguration and hundreds of thousands of women marched all over the country that are now going into electoral politics sited that First Anniversary and the government was shut down, and i thought about as i rolled Downtown Manhattan after our harlem rally, ive known donald trump over 30 years. Its ironic that times square yesterday was filled with people protesting him because right there in times square aside from the broadway plays and the lights, its known for con men. Its known for people that will sell things that are not there. Donald trump says hes the master of the art of the deal. He really was a real estate con man in new york but you cant con people, mr. President , unless they want something from you and you use their desire to get them to give more than what its worth or whatever the c con may be. People like women and blacks and latinos and ordinary working whites, they are not trying to get something from you. They are trying to preserve and protect what the country promises every citizen, thats why negotiating with you is like negotiating with jello because youre looking for somebody that is on the make, rather than somebody the country was made for. You need to grow into being president because the public is not going to grow out of being citizens with equal protection under the law. That does it for me. Thanks for watching. Ill see you back here next sunday. Now to my colleague, alex witt. So that was cool. I got a front row seat in the congregation to that sermon. Thats right. This is good. I heard it front and center. I heard you mumble in eight men. Youre a good parishioner. Always good with you, my friend. A very good morning to all of you, im alex witt. It is 9 00 a. M. Here in the west and 6 00 a. M. Out west.
