With President Donald Trump addressing his enablers in the white house rose garden. Keeping with the theme of the previous four days. It was a list of symptoms without causes. According to the president s party, because thats really all it is at this point. The protesters have been tugging at the nations conscience for the last four months, having no grievances worth listening to. Even as unrest continues in wisconsin and elsewhere over the Police Shooting of jacob blake and the president s poor Approval Ratings are the result of unfair treatment by the media and not his abysmal response to a pandemic that has claimed more than 183,000 american lives, so many of them black and brown, and uniquely vulnerable. On friday as president of National Action network, were joined by other civil rights leaders, thousands of us on the National Mall to commemorate the historic march on washington for jobs and freedom of 1963. And there was 2020 in its boldest, starkest contrast. Black people continue to suffer disproportionately from covid19 and yet the faces of the march were overwhelmingly covered. And while the rnc could not bring itself to say black lives matter beyond a few token speakers, of course, we stood up and said with full throats and declared that black death at the hands of the state will not continue. In just a moment ill talk with the coorganizer of the march, Martin Luther king iii, along with civil rights attorney, attorney general for black america i call him, ben acob bl blake sr. And quickly, before i start, i want to take this time to menialize the late actor Chadwick Boseman. I like so many was stunned to learn of his passing yesterday from colon cancer at the age of 43. Im proud to say i crossed paths with a cultural trail blazer, a bright light for so many black and brown and white children, not just a black panther. But first to politics. Joining me is senator bob casey. Senator casey, thanks for being with us this evening. Let me start by asking you, as you looked at the Republican Convention and its ending on the lawn of the white house, many of the speakers, including the secretary of state and others in the trump family speaking on federal property, isnt this, if not illegal, certainly unprecedented and unethical to be using federal taxpayer money or supported with monies of taxpayers properties to do a Political Campaign and pitch for votes . Reverend al, it was totally inappropriate. Anyone who knows anything about the rules of government would tell you that was totally inappropriate. To use a blatant political strategy on the lawn of the white house was really an insult to the country but in so many ways was emblematic about what this president is about. He never follows the rules. His speech indicated once again that hes all about fear and smear and demonize and divide. No plan for the virus. So why would he be worried about people on that lawn . He has no plan to attack the virus, no plan to create jobs, no plan to heal the deep, open racial wounds we still have. I think that demonstration on the white house lawn was emblematic of his contempt of where we should be in america today. And we still are sitting in this country without a real coming to terms by the senate headed by the majority leader mcconnell on how to deal with a second need of American People to deal with some covid19, ill put it that way, or Coronavirus Relief funds because theyre clearly out of funds and we cant even get an agreement after the house has passed a bill, the senate has not even come with any kind of aid at this point why people are suffering. Exactly. At the time when the country has suffered more than 180,000 deaths, we got 4 of the worlds population, 22 of the deaths, neither the president nor his party has come forward with legislation to deal with the virus, to create jobs. Reverend al, were at record unemployment in pennsylvania, the highest weve seen since the 1930s and theres no plan. No plan for jobs, no recognition that its about time that we had a reckoning on race and at least an attempt in the senate of the United States to vote on our bill, the justice and policing act. But you get no leadership on that either. Let me push you on that one. The justice and policing act named after george floyd was one of the two objectives of the march yesterday in washington at Lincoln Memorial where martin iii and i coconvened. Tens of thousands of people, not one incident, no violence, saying we feel the continuation of dr. Kings dream in this time would be to pass the george floyd policing and justice act and the john lewis Voting Rights act, which of course we see everyone meni imemorializing jo lewis but not saying theyring if theyre going to move to pass it. What is the likelihood under this senate we can get that passed or will it have to be determined at the polls and bringing in a new senate that can push legislative relief where were not getting executive relief . Reverend al, were going to keep fighting and pushing. I have to say the demonstration these last couple of months, as well as the march on march that you led has created a lot of momentum. You have republicans in washington for the first time in my memory even acknowledging that legislation might be necessary. It is essential to bring about accountability for either Police Misconduct or police brutality. And just so your viewers know, the George Floyd Justice and policing act is senate bill 3912 and it has Accountability Measures in the first couple provisions for the first time. But were grateful that you are leading that effort to have people demonstrate because you showed once again that you and others have done your part to demonstrate and to move public opinion. Now we got to legislate in the United States senate. All right. Thank you for being with us. Ill leave it there, senator bob casey of pennsylvania. Now to the rally that my organization joined other civil right leaders led by Martin Luther king iii and others, thousands came to the rally called a commitment march, get your knee off our necks. And it marked the anniversary of the march on washington, one of the most important civil rights demonstrations in our history. This years march is happening amid the black lives matter movement, and the most recent shooting of jacob blake in kenosha, wisconsin. Three of those who marched side by side with me are joining us tonight, civil rights activist, global activist Martin Luther king iii, attorney general of black america, Benjamin Crump and were trying to get on the phone the father of jacob blake, jacob blake sr. Let me start with you, martin, when you and i talked late spring and summer about the possibility of a march and i announced it at George Floyds funeral, we wanted to, one, make sure it was safe, which we more than enforced, making everyone wear masks, taking everyones temperature, making sure there was social distancing as much as possible and on the platform we had time navigating a lot of the families doing that and we wanted to make sure there was a legislative goal, something that your father taught his team when he was around before either of us were old enough to be active or something your mother used to say all the time, and that it was peaceful. How do you think we did on all scores and where do you see us going from here . I think, rev, that we accomplished that goal in a very significant way. I think one of the things i must say is the nation owes you a debt of gratitude, not just for envisioning the idea but the fact that these families are supported over and over again but by the leadership that you provide, not just right now but for 20 years. A lot of the conditions that exist and the tragic incidents that have occurred, nobody would have known about. I met about eight people yesterday and deaths that have occurred by the hands of police that i didnt know about. And so i want to thank you first for that, reverend. But, secondly, i must say that those goals were accomplished. Now the real work begins for us to go back to the communities, to mobilize, to organize, to register, to vote and then to also be blasting when i say blasting, i dont mean negatively. Im talking about with technology. The United States senator starting with mitch mcconnell. Everybody in the state of kentucky needs to be blasting his office with emails, with tiktok, with snapchat, every modality we need to use, him and all the senators so that these two bills, the george floyd bill and the john lewis Voter Registration restoration act can be passed. Now, and im going to you, attorney general crump, but i see Yolanda Martin and andreas daughter have been teaching them about tiktok and other social media. Martin was not that well informed about that before. Absolutely. Attorney crump, you have been the leading attorney in this era of civil rights. As we look at the blake case, were seeing that the Police Association and others are doing what we know was going to happen, starting to smear the victim, starting to put out things that they say as much of it erroneously led to him being shot in the back and now paralyzed, possibly for life. As you deal with this, give us an update of where we are in this investigation and whether its Breonna Taylor who you represent, i talked to the brother today of george floyd and that youve been that legal vanguard to really deal with these cases and all of these victims being smeared while you try to fight through and deal with evidence. Absolutely, reverend al. And i join martin iii in acknowledging the irreverence in this movement because not only did you and martin lead an historic rally like weve never seen before in this covid19 pandemic era, but it was one that helped galvanize attention on this commitment that no matter how they try to distract us, whatever tactics they try to use, like assassinating the character of our children after they killed them, like they did with trayvon, like they did with michael brown, like they did with so many others, reverend al, you know, you helped teach me not to get distracted. And so when we think about jacob blake jr. , who was shot in the back seven times, i refuse to allow them to distract us and say, well, you have to put it in contest, dont rush to judgment. All we need to do, reverend al, is look at the videotape. It tells us exactly what is relevant here. Jacob was not making a threat or posing a violent threat to anybody as hes walking away from the police. He never verbally threatened the police. All he was trying to do was get in his car and get his three little boys out of a volatile situation. It is the tale of two videotapes, reverend al, when you look at what happened to jacob, going away, being shot in the back and an alleged young White Nationalist who shot three people, killing two of them, and walked down the street with an assault weapon hanging from his neck, past several police officers, past several National Guardsmen and nobody shot him in the back. Nobody killed him. It underscores the fact that we have two justice systems in america, one for black america and one for White America and never has that been so clear and vivid as with those two videos, reverend al, so we wont be distracted. Let me bring you in, a man that said that to the nation yesterday, the father of jacob blake, jacob blake sr. , who said at the rally in front of those tens of thousands of people theres two justices, one black and one white. When he called us lack week after last week and reminded that i had talked to him and he was committed to justice for his son and for the other families and people that have suffered around the country, he is there. They just had a family participation and a rally and hes continued to fight. First of all, tell me, mr. Blake, how is your son . And how do you feel as you articulated these two forms of justice, justice for whites and justice for blacks in this country . Well, first of all, reverend al, id like to thank you for how you treated me this weekend. I felt like your little brother for real and, yes, you got me by a few. But i love the way you treated me. And just to see iii up there, man, you know, my father knew his father and knew you. I wanted to get that out there and let that be known. Thats right. But my son, his mother went up there just about an hour ago, about an hour ago. Hes still heavily sedated but hes longer in styles now than out. But hes in a lot of pain, rev. You know, i wake up sometimes at like 2 00, 1 00 in the morning and i cant go back to sleep because, you know, i just i know hes in a lot of i just wish i could just pick my baby up and make him all right. But those two systems exist, like my attorney said a few minutes ago. You know, that white young man walked down the street and killed two people and blew another mans arm off. He made it all the way back to illinois, intantioch. He walked past the police and gave them a high five and some water. There has to be two different systems. If that had been a brown boy, we all know what the outcome would have been. Hed have never made it back to wherever he was trying to go. Wow. Its an unfair thing, and we know i tried to i was the only there was two black guys in my high school when i went to notre dame in niles, illinois. And one of my classmates called me and he said, man, you know, ive never known fear of when a policeman pulls me over, i know i got to waste 10 or 15 minutes. He said i never thought about being in fear of losing my life when those bubble gums come on. We think about it the whole time the lights go on and when the officer comes up, we know were going to jail. There are things we have to deal with my white counterparts dont have to deal with that. Im a grown man and i still look out my rear view mirror, let me see who is coming around, i want to be prepared. But for them to try to besmudge my son and his name because they put seven bullets in him. They put the seven bullets in him. My son didnt ask them to shoot hill. He didnt do anything to provoke being shot. He was moving away from the officer. The officer had to grab his shirt and pull him so he could have a clear shot. Wow. Pulled him into the attack . In front of my grandchildren. Pulled him into the shot. All you have to do is watch it. Its not like im making this up like im a witness. The wohole world is a witness. All it took is for one of those bullets to ricochet off the side of my truck and kill one of my grandchildren. As you hear mr. Blake tell that, i think one of the things i wanted to do yesterday was have some of the leaders and officials speak but for people to hear from the victims. These are human beings. The thing mr. Blake made clear, this is my son, these are my grand kids, these are real people. Im not leading an organization, im talking about this could be your kids, your grandkids. These are real people being treated in this way. Absolutely, rev. And, you know, the question really is what are we going to do to stop this conduct . And as ive moved around the nation and i know you as well and i know we sort of talked about this but there are others who are talking about we as black people spent 1. 4 trillion into this economy last year. And maybe we need to do at least from a strategic standpoint or briefly an economic withdrawal. For 381 day black people didnt ride the buses in montgomery. We know after that point the bus company changed. I believe that these Corporate Leaders have to be challenged to come and help us with this cause because police, they dont go to White Communities and do this. They dont act that way at all. So they can act not like that with White Communities, they can act differently with all communities, treat people with dignity and respect and like theyre human beings because thats what we are. So maybe Something Like that from a dramatic standpoint might happen. We saw the nba on wednesday, the Milwaukee Bucks decided not to play. Thats a strong step. Weve never seen athletes do that. I think were going to see more and more kind of activities like this engage until we begin to see the changes that need to happen in our community and our nation. Attorney crumbp, breanna taylor, and what do you say as an attorney is the things that citizens, people watching us all over the country can and should be doing that helps create a climate for justice for these victims . Reverend al, i think what martin said was very important when the Milwaukee Bucks took that activism and refused to play, where they didnt just refuse to play, they took action as lebron james and giannis said, its not enough just to get upset and say something, we have to do something. These voting polls that they have set up in all the arenas now, thats where anybody and everybody can and should be doing. We should absolutely be voting early. We should not trust the mailin ballots. We have to go vote not just at the top of the ticket, reverend al, but also for who those local district attorneys are and who the city is because thatmayor i going to appoint who the police chief is so when they have a george floyd or breanna taylor, they will treat them like a citizen from a different area code. What we want, reverend al, is all our children to have an equal opportunity at the american dream. Mr. Blake, as you and jacobs mother and family members are going through this painful experience, how does it make you feel to see tens of thousands of people out supporting you yesterday in washington, hundreds today in kenosha, how important is it that people be involved to help in the midst of all this pain youre suffering, at least to know that people are staying, theyre going to stand up and they want to see justice for jacob and other victims . Well, rev, you know, it charges your battery because, trust me, your battery gets low. You know, his brothers and sisters and cousins, they refuse to leave his side. And its a drain on all of us, but we get energy from these crowds yesterday in d. C. , just to stand next to you and to see the iii, i could have walked all the way back or limped all the way back to milwaukee because you gave me strength when i was so weak and it was so hot and we sat there together on them steps. And i know you were thinking like i was thinking, lord, its so hot out here. It felt like we was in the middle of a pot of fish grease. But the energy i got from when you started speaking, it made me feel like i came to d. C. To represent my son and i didnt come here to play. I came here and i will be here and i will not leave milwaukee until my son comes out of that hospital. And you gave me that strength, rev. And i thank you because, man, when i saw iii, man, i tried to tell you, im the iii. Im jacob s. Blake iii. I used to tell everybody thats the iii and and im the third. You dont know what you did for me spiritually. I got the best man in the world. They bent over backwards and they took them shackles off my baby. How can my energy go anywhere but up . Im surrounded by my children, by my brothers. Theyre not going to let nothing happen to me. I saw that. You got serious brothers, serious family. Im going to have to leave it there. Thank you jacob blake sr. For coming on. I love you, al, thank you, man. I love you. And thank you, Martin Luther king iii and though i had to take out one of my better sermons because yolanda upstaged all of us, thats his daughter, she makes you go out and study hard to come up behind her. Coming up, my memo to the president. You dont want to miss this one. But first, my colleague richard lui with todays top news stories. Richard . Some of the stories were watching this hour, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States that is now near 6 million. The death total is now more than 183,000. Meanwhile, the department of health and Human Services says were on track, if not a bit ahead of schedule for developing a vaccine. More than 30,000 people volunteered for the moderna and pfizer trials and others are in phase three testing. Trump surveyed the damage of hurricane laura. And Chadwick Boseman, the actor most famous for his role in black panther has died. He was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago but remained quiet about the disease. Boseman was just 43 years old. Lets go to orange county, texas, where President Donald Trump is touring the ravaged area that hurricane laura left behind. He is visiting an Emergency Operations center. Lets listen in for a few seconds before we go to break. We are no longer going to be updated on the house and senate on security issues. I could have mark answer that question. As you know, hes been giving briefings. Hes going to ultimately give full briefings in terms of not oral briefings but full intel briefings, but it really comes down to one simple thing. Not in the literal sense of course. I know, mr. President , that youve never soiled your tiny hands with actual dirt a day in your life, although you have dirtied them in a thousand other ways. No, i want to talk about reaping what you so. This weeks unveiling of the newly redesigned rose garden was an apt metaphor for your presidency. Just as gardeners remove decades of vibrant beautiful flowers and trees in the service of a bland new design, so, too, have you ripped up any semblance of democracy by the root, sacrificing the lives of americans with your carelessness and relegating our standing in the world to the compost heap of history. Your delusions of grandeur and filling the convention with your own family perhaps because the more venerated members of your own party see you for what you really are, a failed Television Star with a wellintended and welltended and growing authoritarian streak. Meanwhile, tuesdays festivities alone would be enough for an impeachment inquiry over ethics in any other administration the first ladys use of the very rose garden she uprooted is probably a violation of the hatch act. On that same night, two of your Adult Children spoke from a different federal property, another glaring ethics violation. Meanwhile secretary of state mike pompeos speech from foreign soil while on taxpayerfunded official business has already prompted an investigation. And then there was Vice President mike pence, whose venue was yet another piece of federal property, a location that one republican delegate described as a, quote, reward for party loyalists. Im appalled but not surprised that your administration feels free to flout the rule of law and offer up this nations beautiful public lands as a private perk to those who shovel manure on the guard i dont kar. You besmirched one of the most sacred ceremonies in the american experiment, using the naturalization of five new citizens as political fodder, a move that is particularly galling because your administration has been nakedly hostile towards all kind immigration and because you apparently did this without the consent of these new citizens. Although i suppose ignoring consent is basically your brand. And for your grand finale, you gleefully trampled on literal centuries of carefully cultivated ethics and norms by accepting your partys nomination on the white house lawn, allowing thousands of spectators to gather in defiance of Health Experts in the middle of a pandemic, trampling on the lawn of the peoples house because as much as you might wish it were different, the president is not king and the white house is not your palace. It belongs to the American People who graciously allow you and your family to live there while you work on our behalf, except youve never held up your end of the bargain. Just like every deal you ever struck in your socalled Business Career because you still refuse to be a president for all americans. The fact is im here whats the name of that building . But ill say it differently. The fact is were here and theyre not. I for one am glad i wasnt there to witness your desecration of the peoples house, mr. President. Your growing authoritarian streak and insatiable hunger for power and domination disgrace every president who has ever walked those halls. But if youre so desperate to stay in taxpayer funded housing following this election, i have a suggestion that would be much better suited for you, federal prison. And while youre inside reaping what you have sewn, paying your debt to society, perhaps you could pick up some skills that are actually useful, like gardening. Well be right back. I say socalled because the Republican Party broke with over 150 years of tradition by not releasing a platform, except the kind of pledge of personal allegiance to the president. Meanwhile the Democratic Convention featured a robust platform addressing issues like health care, Climate Change and the economy. The differences could not be more stark. Joining me is elena, former National Deputy of africanamerican outreach for president obamas 2008 campaign and democratic strategist, rick tyler, cofounder of foundry strategies and msnbc political analyst and republican strategist. Let me go to you first, rick. Many of us well, ill speak for myself, has said the republican parties become more like a cult of personal than a party. No platform, no putting out what he stands for 2020, just donald trump. Almost like its a cult. It is a cult, rev, and youre right about it and we should just call it what it is. You know, its sad because the 1856 more of the Republican Party were nine planks, six were civil rights planks and that civil rights tradition carried on for the Republican Party for about a hundred years and then it began to wayne and then it was completely lost. Now we dont even have a platform. We, im no longer associated with the Republican Party but the Republican Party no longer has a platform and it has instead a resolution that basically says whatever trump says, we believe. And thats just not sustainable. Trump will pass from the stage one way or the other. I suspect hell go on another third or january 20th or 2021 after he defeated and where is the party going to be there . Its going to have its existing platform which has passed every year, which says we believe whatever donald trump says. Thats no way to run a party. Is that sustainable to voters . How will voters deal with the undercard under the top of the ticket, president , Vice President , for a party in the senate and other races all the way down when theres no defined platform of what that party stands for. I think that the down ballot races are going to be significantly affected by the conventions that we saw last week. In part because the Republican National Convention Really did not stand for an agenda. You heard people you heard speaker after speaker come forward and remind folks to vote down ballot because they know that theyre in trouble. They know that theyre having difficulty tying themselves to donald trump when all donald trump would do is speak to issues of division but not set forward an agenda of how to turn around this pandemic, this Global Pandemic that is affecting us so severely, not turning around our economy, but just telling people to open their doors, not figuring out ways to ensure that we are able to send our children to school. I think by contrast, the democrats did a fantastic job during the Democratic Convention of making sure that we talked about an agenda. We talked about how joe biden and Kamala Harris spoke to the failures of leadership of this current administration, the need to ensure that we all have personal protective equipment, the need to ensure that americans are building and creating and manufacturing that equipment and that there would be a National Mask mandate but also how they would build an economy back better and making sure that we have green jobs and making sure that the economy is not at odds with community and not at odds with community health. So i think you saw a series of items, an informed democratic agenda that bodes well for the down ballot races. Now, rick, let me go to some breaking news that were following. President donald trump just moments ago taking questions during a visit to texas to tour the devastation of hurricane laura. He and his chief of staff, mark meadows, were asked about new reports that office of national the director of National Intelligence will no longer be giving members of congress inperson briefings about Election Security and foreign election interference. Take a listen. Why is the dni no longer going to be updating the house and the senate on Election Security issues in person . Well, could i hai could have answer that question. Mark, please. I talked to radcliffe, hes been giving briefings. Hes going to ultimately give full briefings in terms of not orbriefi oral briefings but full intel briefings. The last time they gave briefings, a few members went and talked to the press and disclosed information they shouldnt have disclosed. Hes going to make sure theres the proper tools for their oversight and make sure they contain it in a way that does not jeopardize sources and methods for the intel that we get. Is this another example of President Donald Trump trying to put his finger on the scale, setting the stage for possible foreign interference that would help him and stir confusion around the outcome of the election . And isnt it contradictory to say hes not giving verbal briefings but written briefings if theres going to be a leak, it will be a leak either way. Does it really mean theyre not going to really give real briefings . I dont know what to make of it right now, al, except its unacceptable. And not giving Election Security briefings doesnt just affect the president. It affects every down ballot race and affects every member of congress. Every member of congress the whole house is on the ballot and a third of the senate is on the ballot, they all have a right to know whether our elections are secure. Now, im confident in our security of our elections from the post office to the 200plus thousand precincts and the poll works are who all work there. So im pretty confident about that. It ju its just outrageous that the president would decide hes not going to not inform members of congress about Election Security. It just unacceptable. And it also, elena, and im out of time but it also increases a lot of our fears about foreign interference with elections when theyre all of a sudden changing how theyre even going to give intelligence was in to members of congress. He knows. Donald trump knows that he cannot win this election fair and square. And so this is just one more step in his playbook. The other, as rick mentioned, is injecting insecurity in our Postal Service and our voting systems and all that we can do is act with purpose to invoke the words of Chadwick Boseman who said the struggles are intended to actually give us purpose. We have purpose now. The purpose is to get out and vote and vote early and vote in person if we can and if we can do it safely but to make the margin so big so that he cannot steal the election and steal our democracy. Thank you both. Tomorrow on politicsnation, an interview you do not want to miss. Im so happy that you are exercising every morning.
