Insurrectionist, amplifying racist videos, protecting confederate monuments by executive decree, this as covid19 cases go tragically and predictably up. Ill talk to alabama senator doug jones shortly about the spiking pandemic numbers in his state and the final chapter of a tragic act of racial terrorism that took the lives of four little black girls 57 years ago. More on his role in that story in a bit. But first, what might be the most Meaningful Police Reform legislation in american history, overwhelmingly passed in the Democratic House one month after George Floyds death, appears to be stuck, because it actually has teeth to attack the problem of police violence, which means Senate Republicans are almost certain not to take it up and Senate Democrats say they will block the reform bill from their gop colleagues, which they have cast as toothless. Joining me now is democratic new jersey senator cory booker. Senator booker, first of all, we saw on one of the morning shows your colleague senator tim scott, republican from south carolina, and he has been pushing the senate bill, which many of us, including me, have called toothless and worthless. And you and some of your democratic colleagues including senator Kamala Harris have pushed for a stronger bill that has real penalties and accountability to police. Where do you see this going now that the house has passed this strong bill, where will we see the senate go, and are we locked in a stalemate here with tim consolidates bill . First of all, we have to acknowledge that this moment was made possible by activism in the streets, in the same way that the civil rights movement, Voting Rights movement, all led to legislation that was not possible before. The activism of folks has gotten a bill that has real accountability in it passed by a majority of the members of the house and even republicans, the white house had to go to work to get other republicans not to sign onto this bill. And these are activists over a long period of time that just spiked recently with george floyd, but theres been a lot of groundwork done for a while. Reverend, youve been leading a lot of that groundwork. These are issues that folks have been calling for for decades. And indeed the bill i helped author, there werent that many original ideas. This was the cobbling together of pieces of legislation that have been around for years if not decades. The principles of the democratic bill, so much of it is overwhelmingly popular with the republican electorate at large. A majority of republicans want a ban on chokeholds, a majority of republicans want us to be a nation that doesnt have noknock warrants for drug cases. But the republican bill has none of that. Therefore, from Breonna Taylor to eric garner, it would not save black lives. So this is a time when we have to ask ourselves, from the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people that are marching and demanding, to even the republican electorate that supports real accountability, why is the republican bill lacking any of that. And its a lot more symbol than it is any real substance. What will, in your opinion, Mitch Mcconnell allow to go forward in the senate, and what will be the democrats position if in fact it remains the bill you just described, having no penalties and none of the issues that have been raised that people are marching in the streets and have caused us to come finally to this moment, what do you think mcconnells move will be . Well, understand what Mitch Mcconnell refers to himself as. He doesnt call himself the guy who moves america forward. No. He calls himself the grim reaper, in other words that he kills bill after bill, even those that have wide bipartisan support. So i understand that Mitch Mcconnell set a process up which could give shield and cover to many of his republican colleagues. But he had no intention of allowing real, substantive reform to happen in the United States of america. And so he is the big block right now. He is a person and you know this, reverend sharpton, its not just that, a lot of folks want to put rand paul at the center of stopping antilynching legislation. Indeed he stopped it from passing with unanimous consent. But knowing that there are 99 senators that support this antilynching legislation, Mitch Mcconnell, if he prioritized issues of justice like this, he could put it on the floor and it would pass overwhelmingly. But he is choosing not to. And so in this climate, i tell you, it is going to be very difficult for anything to get done. But i will say this, that every day, sustained protests, sustained demands of the people is another day i believe that the pressure is on to get something done. And the world may change in washington given the demands of the people. Every day, it must continue. And unfortunately, as you know, various civil Rights Groups are going to converge in washington on the anniversary of the march on washington with Martin Luther king iii. Its beginning to look like we wont have a bill, as we also see the antilynching bill is not there. Let me ask you before i let you go, covid19 is also still high in new jersey. What do you say to the activities, or the lack of, from the president , the Vice President , and the task force . This president and Vice President are showing themselves uniquely unqualified for this crisis of covid. And therefore the United States of hadar is an outlier of all nations generally in terms of the number of cases we have and the number of deaths were seeing and for them to continue to go against their own experts, the cdc and others, for them to show behavior that is contrary to that which would save lives, for this president to hold rallies where they take actions really to undermine any common sense protections, this is all creating an environment where this is not us witnessing a slowmoving car wreck. This is a crisis thats ongoing every single day, that in many ways their complicity or rejection of science is making worse. Were in a crisis of leadership right now. All of us have to take more precautions because the curve is not flattening, indeed the number of cases is going up. As you know, reverend al, vulnerable communities, the elderly, navajo nation, people of color, are seeing death rates at significantly higher rates. And this is something that all of america should be condemning, and not just the leadership, but frankly, the lack of a vision for how our country can get through this crisis thats going to last for many, many more months. Well have to leave it there, senator cory booker, thank you for joining us. Joining me now is senator doug jones of alabama, a democrat. Let me ask you, senator jones, as you know very well, ive shared with you, i have roots on my mothers side in alabama. She grew up and was buried there. I have a sister, two brothers there, living there now. What is going on about this spike in covid19 in alabama . It seems to me disturbing. Can you give us firsthand knowledge of what is going on . And your view of the president who seems to be telling the nation everything is going fine, and your home state is less than fine, to put it nicely. It is putting it nicely, reverend al. Thank you for having me today. Its disturbing whats going on in the state of alabama right now. Our governor early on did a fine job of trying to open us up back very slowly and methodically. The problem that we saw is that people were not listening to the rest of the message. The rest of the message, like around the country, is to social distance, to wear a mask, to wash your hands, to do all the good hygiene. People seemed to just let that go and want to open up and get back out there. In part thats because weve seen that from the administration. Too often we are not getting the right messages. Were getting the mixed messages and the mixed signals. I think were going to see more problems. What ive been telling people all along, and ive done something every week since this crisis started with a health care professional. Folks, please listen to the health care professionals, dont necessarily listen to me or even my friend senator booker unless theyre repeating what Health Care Officials are telling you, and its consistent, what theyre telling you. If folks can really do the personal responsibility, i think that we can open the economy back up, but its not going to be back to the same it was before this crisis hit. But weve got to take care of ourselves, thats just the bottom line. Have you been able to see any genuine effort in the state in terms of the federal government . Ill give an example, the president refusing to be seen wearing a mask. When you see that kind of example set at the top, isnt it difficult for people like you to tell people to do things when they are looking at the person that is supposed to symbolize, as head of state of the country, symbolizing the nation, refuses to wear a mask and refuses to take it seriously . Its very unfortunate hes done that. Hes made it political. Thats the most unfortunate part about this pandemic. Nothing should be political, this virus knows no political boundaries in who it infects. Our state leaders have done a better job. People still look to the president. Youve seen me, youve seen senator shelby, and others that are Wearing Masks when theyre seen in washington and at home. You saw the university of alabama football team, coach nick saban, put out a video a couple of weeks ago warning people to wear a mask. That gets some attention. And from what i understand, we may be seeing some more Public Service announcements coming out in the next couple of weeks as we go into the fourth of july holiday of just imploring people, people that folks will listen to and see, to say please wear a mask, it helps everyone if you do that. Now, senator, u. S. Well know, thomas blanton, the last of the three klansmen who bombed the Baptist Church in 1963, killing four black girls, he died earlier this week. You prosecuted blanton as a former u. S. Attorney and wrote on twitter friday, no matter what i do in my life, i will always be most proud of achieving justice for those four young black girls. Blanton never atoned for his sins but his passing at this moment seems fitting. The journey to Racial Justice is long, but i believe america is ready to finish it together. And at the time you prosecuted them, it was late, but you went back and did it, and it was one of the most horrific acts that weve seen in the history of this country, not long after the 63 march on washington. These girls, in church, in sunday school, and they put a bomb in the building of a church and killed them because of the movement that was going on in that city. Your flexes this week, now that youve tweeted about the death of blanton, the last of the three. You know, reverend al, its kind of a its been kind of an emotional ride for me, i think, in the last couple of weeks, because if you followed some of what ive said, i have talked about the fact that we are in an important moment in history right now, that so many people across this country now have been rising up and their voices are being heard, that understand that that road to justice has been long. And were not at the end of it yet. Weve made progress on that road and that journey to justice, but were not there yet. And weve still got a ways to go. But there i think after the death of george floyd, people now see the inequities in our society. I think the pandemic has also showed that, especially with regard to health care and the economic disparities. But the death of george floyd really galvanized, everything seemed to come together at once. I hearken back to 1963, the fire hoses and dogs, that was Birmingham Police officers. I hearken back to the stand at the schoolhouse door, the murder of medgar evers and the bombing of those children. And our friend john lewis being beaten on the Edmond Pettus bridge in selma. That galvanized americans to make very important changes. We are at that other moment. It seems tommy blantons passing is coming at a time when america is finally recognizing the multigenerational failures that weve had. Blantons kind are fading away, and thats good thing. As we move to a more just society, we will have a more inclusive society, one that we can build together. Thank you for joining us this evening, senator doug jones of alabama. Joining me now is republican strategyist susan del percio and sirius xm analyst zerlina maxwell. As i talked to senator jones of alabama, it came to mind that the state of mississippi voted to take the confederate emblem out of the mississippi flag. This is something that is just symbolic but significant. It is very significant, rev. I believe it passed the house 9123. This is the mississippi house. The mississippi house, yes. I think its going over to the senate momentarily. Im curious, who are the 23 . Right. The only thing i can wonder is, is that the base that donald trump is playing to . Because with everything going on, how you could show such a lack of awareness, and frankly, compassion, to vote to keep it is just absurd to me. Zerlina, as we see the moves around the country, around removing confederate statues and removing symbols of racism, we even saw in princeton they took down Woodrow Wilsons name from one of the buildings because he was an avowed racist, how do we translate that into legislation like policing, the george floyd policing act and other things, so clearly it is important to deal with the symbols, but it is also important to deal with the substance of legislation and policy. Thats exactly right, rev. Essentially you need to do a multitude of things in all at the same time. America is experiencing a reckoning around race. It also experienced a reckoning around gender in 2018. The intersection of those two things, the black lives Matter Movement being started by three black women who started the hashtag, demonstrates that the strength of this movement at this time, as it coalesces and leads us into the election with the potential to change policy, must be centered around the most marginalized. I think that the polling data out of texas and arizona shows the demographic shifts that are leading us to a place where this reckoning was eventually going to happen. Its just the pandemic, i think, was the catalyst that sped it up a bit and made the sense of urgency all the more real for people of all backgrounds because it really is a matter of life and death. Now, susan, when zerlina mentions the pandemic, theres even been the Politics Around that. We have the president and the task force and others that have denied that the actual numbers are what they are in terms of spiking up, and the danger to peoples lives. Nothing new then, what he did in january when he refused to move forward even after he was briefed. And one of the things that i noticed is that you see the task force and the Vice President going into texas. The Vice President there today. We never saw him coming to new york, which was the epicenter early in this disease. So are we watching some politics and play based on who is a republican governor and who is more favorable to the white house . I think this administration has been completely consistent on one thing throughout. They only know politics. They only play politics. So they only care about their base and thats where their focus is. In retrospect, im kind of happy they never came to new york, rev. They would have been a disruption that we couldnt have survived. We had people in such horrid conditions. Even the waits outside of emergency rooms. Im happy they werent here. I know they were in contact. But i think this administration right now is starting to wake up, maybe not the president , but at least the Vice President , and theyre demanding that we take care of our people. I mean, when youre dealing with such a lack of inability to handle a crisis and the lack of governance, its not surprising that the president s numbers are tarnging. Tanking. Zerlina, as just mentioned by susan, the numbers are tanking on the president. And clearly one has to wonder, in your opinion, we know were four months out, or a little more, from the election, but will a lot of this election depend on how the president has handled the pandemic and how he has handled the question of race and specifically, policing . Will a lot of that be factors that determines the outcome of this election in november . Yes, i think so. I think what the pandemic did is equalized the impact of trumps incompetence on every single american. So while black and brown people could feel the consequence and the real harm of the trump administrations policies for the first three years, it wasnt until the pandemic when everyone was forced inside, except for essential workers, right, and they were reckoning with the president s fitness to lead. So i think what the polling demonstrates is every american coming around to the reality that we have a reality star as president , who is play acting the role. He is not fit to lead. And he does not have the requisite knowledge, nor does he want to seek it out, to get us through this crisis and the unfolding economic crisis as a result of the Public Health crisis. So i think the president s incompetence, thats whats on full display as a result of the pandemic. I do think we will see that come through in the election results. Republican strategist susan del percio and zerlina maxwell, author of the end of white politics, how do i know, i looked over my left and my right shoulder. Coming up, a wave of Progressive Democratic primary victories this week. Is that a sign of things to come in november . First, my colleague richard lui. Thanks, rev. A news update for you. An historic day at the Mississippi State capitol, passing a bill to remove the confederate emblem from their state flag. Republican governor tate reed says he will sign the bill later today. Covid19 reaching another grim milestone this day. The number of cases across the globe has surpassed 10 million according to johns hopkins. The United States accounts for 25 of that number. This weekend in new york, we saw Jamaal Bowman beat out congressman eliot engel in the primary. Thats part of a wave of Progressive Democratic primary victories this week. Also in new york, Richie Torres is likely to become the first openly gay black man in congress. And in deep red kentucky, were still waiting on all the absentee ballots to be counted for progressive candidate charles booker, who currently has a slight lead over amy mcgrath in a contest that will decide who has the chance to unseat Mitch Mcconnell just over four months from today. Joining me now is Jamaal Bowman, democratic candidate for congress in new yorks 16th congressional district. Jamaal, i said to you on morning joe on thursday or friday, that one of the things that was impressive by you, yes, youre progressive and part of a new wave, but youre grounded in that community. Youve been the assistant principal for decades, and really built a movement from the ground up. And i think people in some circumstances may misunderstand, progressive doesnt mean youre not grounded and rooted, and just because youre progressive, you werent born into being involved in the community yesterday. Absolutely. Just a quick correction, i was the founding principal of a Public Middle School where i served for 10 1 2 years. And youre right, to be a progressive is to be grounded in the community. And i had the good fortune of serving this community for ten years as a middle School Principal and served in similar communities for 20 years as a Public School educator. And the numbers speak for themselves. I mean, we were able to double turnout overall, and in some districts in the community the numbers tripled. Were talking about africanamerican and latino communities who historically the stereotype is, those communities, our communities, do not come out and vote. We were able to prove that wrong because from the very beginning we connected with those communities, we listened very carefully, we learned a lot and we aligned our policy platforms to the demands and the needs of this district. Now, you took direct aim at President Trump in your victory speech tuesday. Take a listen. Eliot engel, ill say his name once, used to say he was a thorn in the side of donald trump. But you know what donald trump is more afraid of than anything else . A black man with power. That is what donald trump is afraid of. So clearly you intend to go to washington as a black man with power and stand up to the president and his policies. Explain. Well, weve been standing up to White Supremacy throughout our time in this country, we meaning the history of black people. And black people and our allies in general. And its something we have to continue to stand up to. Its not just about donald trump. Its about systematic racism and where it lives and how it lives in every american institution. It lives in education. It lives in health care. It lives in environmental justice. It lives in wealth inequality. Its everywhere. Its our job, not just as black people, but our allies, to stand up to White Supremacy in all its forms and to stand up to the ideology that continues to suppress and oppress us. So i look forward to continuing that work in congress, which is similar to the work ive done in education throughout my career. And as you take your seat in congress, youve said to me youre interested in being in committees that are clearly going to be able to help you work on those specific areas that you have expertise in as well as work with other progressive members of congress in the Congressional Black Caucus on broader issues. Absolutely. You know, obviously as an educator for 20 years, someone who has his doctorate in education leadership, i want to be on the education and labor committee. Im really excited about that. Not just because of the education side but because of the labor side. I mean, wealth inequality continues because were not equitiably sharing wealth with the labor that helps create labor. The Green New Deal is a part of creating millions of labor jobs, union jobs, not just here in this country but around the world. We have to continue to grow labor jobs in this country and im excited to be a part of the education and labor committee. All right, democratic candidate and dr. So cocacola is just the latest company in addition to hersheys, in addition to unilever earlier today, announcing that theyre going to halt advertising on social media. And of course this is a direct aim at facebook, which has been under pressure because of this flow of advertisers deciding to support this boycott. That boycott is the organized effort to get social media giant facebook to finally take hate speech, violence, and Voter Suppression seriously on its platform by hitting it where it hurts, the wallet. Huge brands like cocacola, unilever, honda and more have pledged to pull millions of dollars of advertising from facebook. And it seems like the loss of that ad revenue is finally moving the needle on founder and ceo Mark Zuckerberg. In a small but noteworthy step, he committed to labeling politicians posts as harmful if they violate rules and flagging hate posts and advertisements, a step already taken by rival company twitter. Joining me now is Derek Johnson, president and ceo of the naacp. And jonathan greenblatt, National Director and ceo of the antidefamation league. Jonathan, let me go to you first, before i get to the facebook stop the hate campaign, i need you to look at this, i need to ask you about something the president endorsed on twitter. Just this morning, donald trump retweeted a pretty disturbing video, pourportedly taken in th villages in florida, of Trump Supporters chanting a racist slogan while facing off with counterprotesters. White power white power there you go, white power, did you hear that . Now, the white house is claiming the president didnt hear the racist language on the video even though the chant occurs just eight seconds into the clip. He tweeted approvingly, quote, great people. The president has now deleted the tweet and the house claims he didnt hear the supporters shouting white power although it was said several times. Is this the kind of things were concerned about on social media . We are in almost july, late june of 2021, and people are openly screaming white power and the president of the United States is retweeting it . Look, its a sad its a sad statement that the president of the United States seems only able to divide rather than unite. I mean, really, al, im not surprised. Four years ago i was on your show and on this network talking about him retweeting antisemitic memes, literally almost four years ago to the day. Four years later, some guy in a golf cart chanting white power . I cant imagine another politician in the country retweeting that. Im glad the president deleted it but it never, ever, ever should have been pushed out in the first place except to condemn it and suggest it has no place in our society. To think a month ago we saw the murder of george floyd in broad daylight and were still grieving ahmed aubrey and were coming off a year when we saw more antisemitic incidents than almost any time since 50 years. We need leaders to lead, not to chant white power but to bring this country together, finally. I think thats what everyone is aching for, healing and reconciliation. He doesnt seem able to do that. Derek, you are one that has been the muscle behind moving all of us in the Civil Rights Community around this issue of hate and social media. And a significant thing has happened today in your home state of mississippi, where you live and have functioned for decades. And, you know, around my office at National Action network, we think mississippi, the older folks and the younger folks, im with the younger folks, but the vote around the question of removing the confederate symbol from the flag, you were one of the original plaintiffs talking about this a while ago. So tell us your personal reflection on a day like this. Its a huge day for many of the civil rights veterans folks, naacp, a former senator really sparked this in the late 70s. I was a plaintiff on the lawsuit in 93 when we realized the flag was never officially adopted. In fact the flag we consider now the Confederate Flag was only resurrected in the 30s and 40s as a symbol of oppression and terrorism. It was never the official flag of the confederacy. It was the battle flag of the Northern Virginia army. From 1993, that lawsuit led to legislative action in had 99, ballot referendum which i managed, you cannot put hate on the ballot and expect the ruling majority to vote correctly for the minority. Can you imagine putting whether we should outlaw slavery on the ballot . It would have failed in 2001. Whether to put on the ballot to ingrate schools, it would have failed in mississippi. So whats going on today is a tremendous step forward. I commend all the veterans still alive today who sacrificed a lifetime of work to get rid of this racial hate red symbored s. No doubt about it, stop the hate campaign. You have sat with Mark Zuckerberg in his house talking about these things. Now were seeing major corporations pull their ad dollars. Explain why this is so important, derek. Its tremendously important. George floyd incident took place, Corporate America recognized that race optimism exists. And they had really strong words to condemn racisracism. Now is an opportunity to do something about it. We removed a symbol of White Supremacy and racism from the mississippi flag. Now we have to remove it from facebook. Thats why jonathan and i are partnering with organizations saying we must stop hateful profit on that platform, theyve been able to profit off white supremacist groups. You cannot have it both ways, you cannot be a public utility, a place where everyone goes, and say we support your cause. We ask Mark Zuckerberg not to give us words, but to actually take the necessary steps to remove hate speech from the platform and protect the sanctity of our democracy. You know, jonathan, part of what is important also is showing the coming together and coalescing of people in leadership, in africanamerican community, in the jewish community, in the lgbt community, people have seen a spikeup in terms of hate, as you said earlier, demonstrated in real time. We saw synagogues targeted in shootings. And many of us are coming together on august 28, the march off washington. It was a coalition that brought us the Civil Rights Act and brought us the Voting Rights act and we must be mature and strategic enough to keep those coalitions together and stronger now. Rev, i couldnt agree more. I could not be prouder than to be working with my friend Derek Johnson from the naacp, Rashad Robinson from the color of change. The relationship between our communities is historic. And we are committed right now to fighting the hate that threatens us all. Look at whats happened in just the last ten days. Starbucks, cocacola, levis, honda, unilever, ben and jerrys, patagonia, the biggest brands in the world have all come together to build upon what derek talked about, to take a stand for Racial Justice, to turn back on racism, antisemitism and all forms of hate and to finally hold Mark Zuckerberg accountable. Think about this, rev. On friday, as a result of stop hate for profit, facebooks shares plummeted more than 8 and the company shed 56 billion in market capitalization. 56 billion. Thats how you get Mark Zuckerberg to the table. And we will not stop until he takes concrete steps to once and for all push prejudice out of the platform, because it has no place, no place in the public conversation. All right. Derek johnson and jonathan greenblatt, i thank both of you for being with us this evening. Since the killing of george floyd and other black men and women, there has been a heightened push to reform the Nations Police departments. Joining that fight are the countrys teachers unions. The American Federation of teachers is calling on School Districts to handle School Safety and security without the help of police, but instead Training School security personnel as peace officers focused on nonviolent conflict resolution. Joining me now is randy randi weingarten, president of the American Federation of teachers. Randi, this is a bold step for the aft. Explain it. As you know, rev, weve spent how many years fighting hate and fighting discrimination. We think that what has happened in the last month or two, particularly in light of George Floyds death, is that even people with my color skin cant deny systemic racism. You cant watch a man get killed saying and screaming and yelling i cant breathe and see the three Police Officers forget about chosauvin, but the others do nothing, without realizing that africanamericans and others of color are treated differently by the police. We felt like this was a moment that you just must act. So what were doing is saying, we shouldnt have policing in schools. We need school security. But the second piece is probably as important, which is were going to have a unionwide, nationwide conversation led by several of our activists to figure out what should School Safety be like, how do you create a welcoming and safe environment so that all kids and all educators feel safe and welcome in schools. And thats the process that im very excited about us doing. Now, so you in many ways, as some that are arguing, and im with them, we have to reimagine how we do policing in the country, you and the aft are saying, we have to reimagine how we do security in the schools where the teachers are. Certainly you want security, but we dont want it in a way that plays into what has been transpiring in terms of what we saw with george floyd. Exactly. Exactly, because think about what happens. If you have a Police Officer in a school that has the ability to arrest, so say theres a scuffle between, you know, two kids, and the and in getting and in trying to deescalate, the Police Officer arrests one of the kids, all of a sudden the kid is in the criminal justice system. And then what happens . And then all of the issues in terms of criminal justice. So why not try to figure out because, you know, you still have to deal with fights, you have to deal with these issues, we have gangs, we have school shootings. But if we have a situation in schools where people take responsibility, where we have more Restorative Justice circles, where we have more social workers and Guidance Counselors and school nurses, where theres a sensitie of responsibility for each other, thats going to be pretty neat. Thats ultimately part of this process, how do we do this in a way that we take on systemic raci racism. And as i said, for people my color to understand that people of color are always treated differently. They are never given the benefit of the doubt the way i would be given the benefit of the doubt. And we have to change that attitude and conduct. All right. Randi weingarten, thank you for being with us. Up next, my final thoughts. Stay with us. Up next, my final thoughts stay with us. Under control. Turns out, it was controlling me. Seemed like my symptoms were. Taking over our time together. Think hell make it . So i talked to my doctor and learned humira can help get and keep uc. Under control when other medications havent worked well enough. Dad hey and it helps people achieve control that lasts.
