This is one of the busiest Commuter Rail lines in the country. There were 600plus passengers on board. It was not a problem with track. It was unfortunately human error and thats part of the investigation. If cars get on those tracks and those gates come down, it is a very dangerous position to be in. Tuesday nights crash is the latest problem for metro railroad. Investigators from the National Transportation safety board are now at the scene of a deadly train commuter crash that killed six and wounded 16. A car collided with a train. The suv reportedly wrapped around the train, exploded and was pushed about 400 feet. The first car of the train caught fire. Many of the injuries were reportedly so severe that the victims could not be identified as of this morning. Just this afternoon, we received some audio of the 911 dispatch calls from the scene of the accident. I need you to respond by the train station. An explosion on the tracks. You said that was car versus train . Medics en route, ambulance will be en route. Keep everybody off of it. I have a 66yearold male with severe chest pain. Hes standing in front of me a quarter mile north of the gates on commerce. More ambulances are required for a car versus train Motor Vehicle accident. Chris gross gave a devastating account of the crash. The guy in front of me either lost or broke his leg. As i was on the ground somebody who had fallen on top of me flames came up of which were about a foot away from my face. After that happened you know, people are screaming and crying. Theres no words to describe how surreal it is to be talking to you guys right now. Yesterdays coalition was the deadliest accident in the 200 year history of metro north. Ntsb investigators are expected to give another update on the situation at 5 00 p. M. Eastern. Joining me now is adam reese. Thanks for joining me. Do we have any more information about how this car ended up on those train tracks . Reporter we dont at this time. She appears to have been stuck there, alex. Right now ntsb investigators have been combing through the charred wreckage looking for any clues. The suv was caught on the tracks. When eyewitnesses saw it on the tracks at the intersection the gate came down. The woman got out of the car and tried to lift the gate. Got back into the car and then the train crashed into the car pushing it some 400 feet. Theyre going to want to talk to the conductor. Theyre going to want to look at videos and talk to eyewitnesses. Obvious adam, what do we know about the information passengers were given immediately after the accident . Reporter one eyewitness said the conductor said we have hit a car or we have hit a vehicle. But according to that eyewitness who was on the train they said there was no other instructions. So as the car filled up with smoke and fire they were forced to punch out the windows and climb out of the windows to safety. Adam reese, thanks for the update. Joining me now katy higgins and nick contasori. A lot of people were reminded of the derailment that happened to metro north in 2013. There have been a series of accidents on metro north unfortunately. Ntsb investigated a number of them. The derailment accident was determined to be the fault of the driver. I believe he fell asleep. This accident involved an error by the passenger driving the suv. But we dont know until the investigation is complete. How she got on the tracks well have to look at whether the signals were working properly and what else might have factors in her being on the track at the wrong time. Can i ask you how long does an investigation like this take and sort of whats involved . The investigators are on scene as of i think, this morning. It is a very good team. Theyll be looking at everything from the signals that i mentioned to what was happening in the minutes before the accident. Fortunately this train, im sure, has a front end camera as most trains do. Well have those and black boxes on the train. Theyll be looking at the survivability of the train itself in terms of the penetration of the train by the rail, the escape routes available, the safety introductions that were instructions that were or were not available to passengers. Itll take probably at least an year until they issue a final report and recommendations. Nick this is a terrible story, a tragic loss. It is also a story that a lot of folks can relate to because a lot of people in this country commute. In 2012 847,000 people commuted on trains on a weekly basis. Theyre going to be looking at signal problems. Theyre going to look at the train itself, the integry ririty of the rail. Thats correct. We have a very very old infrastructure, especially for railways. There are third world countries that have better train systems than we have and more modern and up to date facilities. For a very long time roads and highways and trains were among those few issues where republicans and democrats were happy to agree. It meant money back home in the district. It meant jobs and now it has become partisan and politicized. America has a dplus from the society of civil engineers. Is that something the ntsb is paying attention to . I would say in this accident and well find out the condition of the rails there is technology that i believe would have prevented this accident. The congress has passed a law requiring technology be installed that is called automatic train stop. It would have interrupted or automatically braked train if there was something disrupting or on the tracks. That clearly was not in effect here, but the ntsb has made those recommendations for years. Infrastructures are a part of the problem, but there is technology that i believe would have prevented this accident. Yeah. From the sort of state governance question where do you think the governors are in terms of accountability . Earlier this week the new york city subway was effectively shut down for two hours because there was an umbrella on one of the train tracks. This is an important local issue that would filter up to state level governments. It has to some degree. Andrew cuomo said he would make it a priority. They would work on upgrades. Even in this region at the state level, transportation has become political. The tunnel connection under the hudson that carries almost all of the Passenger Rail through the northeast is very very old. There isnt enough capacity. As you know it became a political issue because governor christie pulled new jersey how far a project to build a new tunnel under the hudson. He said it would be too expensive. Good to see you guys. Thanks for your time. Thank you. After the break, how the president got his groove back. Well look at the renewed swagger and strategy over at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. At the top of president obamas date book today one might imagine a bold four letter word yolo. You only live once after all, so what to do when you are fed up with conservatives who say everything thats happening in the middle east because the president wont blame radical islam. He has sat back and allowed this to happen because he is afraid to say radical islamic terrorism. He seems paralyzed by islam. He is hosting a meeting with american islam leaders at the white house this afternoon. Not all 10 million of them nor is it big enough to host the 600,000plus young people. He did meet with six dreamers in the oval office today and managed to convey a message to republicans. The house of representatives recently passed a bill that would have these six young people deported. I think thats wrong, and i think most americans would think it was wrong if they had a chance to meet these young people. He would veto any legislation that prevents these people from con con contributing to our country. Thanks for joining me. What did the president say to you this afternoon in the oval office . Thank you for having me. Basically, he thanked us for the work that were doing. Dhaka and the most recent executive action was a hard fought victory that our immigrant Community Fought for and won this past year. We have to continue to work with our communities to make sure people come out and apply for these programs. Just like myself i am undocumented and was able to benefit from dhaka. It has big impacts on our communities and our levels. What was your reaction when the president said republicans are trying to actively import people like yourselves . Basically, this is our lives. We shouldnt have to live in fear of going home one day and seeing our loved one, our mom, dad, brother or sister is deported. This is a direct attack on our lives. We shouldnt have to be fearful of losing our loved ones. In terms of that given the fact that House Republicans have passed a bill that would deport would unwind a lot of the executive actions the president made is there increased fear . There is a lot of fear in our communities, but thats why people are continuing to organize to let people know that we fought for this victory and well continue to fight so that all those people are able to live without that fear. And even those that did not benefit or would not qualify under the proposed immigration action including our lgbt brothers and sisters and parents of dreamers well continue to make sure that they are able to live without that fear. Thanks for your time. Thank you. With me now is eugene rob robinson and ben lebolds. Whats happening here . Everybody is going to the white house. These are a lot of groups of people where there is a lot of contention and butting heads between the president and Congressional Republicans. Congressional republicans would like to make this about committee and procedures and it is clear the white house is highlighting the human stories that are at stake here. Congress is way behind the American Public on this issue. Theres bipartisan support on the dream act for years. Congress couldnt get it done. You see the president standing up for these kids who are here and undocumented through no fault of their own. It yolo is it yoloish . The contradictions are clarified now because republicans have both houses of congress therefore they must do something. They cant just say no. They have to actively pass legislation. What theyre spending their time doing is passing legislation has no chance of becoming law basically. Either it is not going to make it through the senate or it is going to be vetoed by the president or both. I think it does sort of highlight that contradiction and the need for republicans to get their act together and figure out what is a republican solution to these issues. So what happens, right . This funding for the department of Homeland Security on the question of immigration expires on february 27th. As yet, i havent seen a plan. Politico reports a quote today. There was no plan beyond having another vote to show that the house the bill wont pass. Dont you love vision the senator said with a laugh. Literally laughing out loud. The irony of all this is the department of Homeland Security is dividing between what they call essential employees and nonessential employees. 85 of department of Homeland Security employees are essential employees. This doesnt even defund them. It is just political theatrics on the republicans part. To what end . We know it is a bad idea. It doesnt really further their goals. It feel like it incenses the base even more. Where is the exit hatch . Just to pass clean bill funding the department, period. If they insist on trying to get some itty bitty something the question is what if anything is the white house and the senate prepared to give . To give them. Right. Are they going to get out of this maze they are housed . It seems like a season of contrition. I dont see a lot of it wasnt as if people were scurrying around figuring how are we beginninggoing to find a way for the house to climb down. Face must be saved. I want to talk about the meeting with Muslim Leaders. It is i think, a message from the white house that the president has long held that isis does not represent islam. The fact he is meeting with Muslim Leaders on a day Congressional Republicans are saying the president will not take on radical islam, which is an unfortunate byproduct of the days when he was school taught that it was the product of peace. I think there is a hard power component to this and a soft power component. As many ships and plants as we deploy in this conflict, ultimately there needs to be a step from the Muslim Community as well to put out a counter narrative that encourages young muslims not to join the ranks of jihadists. Theres been a push to get Muslim Leaders involved to fight home grown terrorism and the recruitment efforts were seeing with isis and al qaeda. I will point out what president obama says about radical islam is the exact same thing former president bush said about radical islam. Right. This has been the standard line. I do wonder when we talk about the fight against isis, ash carter is having his confirmation hearing on the hill. Loretta lynn has her confirmation hearings on the hill. It feels like they are going to give the president actually what he wants on defense and in terms of ag. These confirmation hearings have been used as a platform to raise some issues but theyll be supportive and let the nominations through at the end of the day. I thought lynch was going to have a harder hearing. They like legislatororetta lynch and ash carter. It was clear in the lynch hearing that i thought she would do a good job. There was some issues but they raised them in a way that the senate ought to raise issues. Maybe the Silver Lining is as dysfunctional as it may seem in the top layer of jello it is secretly functioning at the end of the day. Well see what happens. Ill leave that to you. Good to see you guys. Good to be here. Coming up, rand paul does something he warned could cause profound mental disorders. Thats next. Theyre coming. What do i do . You need to catch the 4 10 huh . The Equipment Tracking system will get you to the loading dock. There should be a truck leaving now. I got it. Now jump off the bridge. What . In 3. 2. 1. Are you kidding me . Go. Right on time. I love my sister. 40 flavors. 100 calories or less. How much money do you have in your pocket right now . I have 40 21. Could something that small make an impact on something as big as your retirement . I dont think so. Well if you start putting that towards your retirement every week and let it grow over time, for twenty to thirty years that retirement challenge might not seem so big after all. Isnt it ironic . Senator rand paul appears to think so tweeting a photo of himself in the Doctors Office with the caption ironic. Today im getting myself the booster vaccine. Senator pauls booster shot comes after he shushed and scolded kelly evans for a slanted interview. Hes aware of tragic cases of children who wound up with profound mental disorders because of the vaccines. Well take todays tweet as a shot in the arm for the provaccine movement. Another republican candidate is weighing in on the vaccinateing debate. I think it is better just to say parents have the responsibility to make sure their children are protected, over and out. Just ahead, well speak to the reporter who broke decorategate. The office that has congressman aaron schock in hot water. Thats next on now. Good job still running in the morning . Yeah. Getting your vegetables every day . When i can. [ bop ] [ male announcer ] couldve had a v8. Two full servings of vegetables for only 50 delicious calories. Illinois congressman Aaron Schocks Downton Abbey inspired Congressional Office may not be so debonair after all. Late yesterday the Watchdog Group citizens for responsibility and ethics in washington, they filed a complaint with the congressional ethics office. They allege that schocks design work violates house rules that prevent congressmen from accepting any gifts over 100 in value. According to usa today, schocks office spent over 79,000 on furniture purchases, including 5,000 to a company that specialized in hardwood podiums. Joining me now is ben terrace. Ben, it sounds like this story happened by accident. Did schocks people really think no one would notice massive pheasant feather arrangements and blood red walls . It was definitely by accident. I had a coffee date scheduleed with the communications director. I suggested we meet in the cafeteria cafeteria. He said why dont you come up to my office. He was 20 minutes late. 20 minutes in a bright red room how am i not going to notice . Was it panic set in . To what degree were they caught off guard by your questions . There was a very nice lady on site. I was in the office. I was taking pictures. A woman behind the front desk said you like it . It is inspired by the red room in Downton Abbey. I knew that was cool. As i was taking pictures the woman popped out from the more inner of the offices and suggest i come check out the rest. It was pretty cool. They were initially very proud of this decor. Yes. Then at what point did that flip and they were not necessarily excited you were writing this piece . For the woman who was decorating it she was happy about it the whole time. About five minutes into taking pictures, i got called from the now late communications director. He said are you talking takes pictures of this office . Yes. Who gave you permission . The nice woman who is with me right now. Stay where you are. You have created a crisis. I was asked to delete the photos from my phone. You kept some of those photos. I didnt delete any photos. This is a taxpayers office. Ben terrace with the washington post, author of the article that has set in motion some interesting story lines. Joining me now is Patricia Murphy and Washington Bureau chief john staten. You guys spent time on capitol hill. This seems a little bit of the ordinary. Is it . In my previous life as a capitol hill staff member one of my jobs was to decorate the office. Did you choose carmine and pheasant feathers . I wish i had gone with the mandarin red. Theyll comb over and give you a selections of oatmeal beige. Youll pick one for your paint color. Theres like grits, cream of wheat. Right. Theyll give you banged up furniture that you can choose to repurpose and you do. You can pick from four or five different swatches to get new curtains especially if the previous user was a smoker. It is done on the cheap. If a member wants to spend their own personal money, they can. If they want to use their entire house budget for furniture instead of salaries they can. In a lot of the reporting thats been coming out about congressman schocks choices those could be running afoul. He doesnt watch Downton Abbey. That has landed them in further hot water because it may be a violation of ethics rules. A crew is operated by the Hillary Clinton campaign essentially. The fact they came out with this the next day and say this is clearly against house rules. Thats citizens for responsible ethics in washington. I would have to see more of this. Even if it is a thing, on one hand it is a little tacky to hit him on this, but it represents a problem he has had. He appears to have spent more time worrying about his image than about what he is doing. He has been on the cover of fitness magazines. How dare he exercise. This is also a dude who voted to defund federal funding for pbs and has a Downton Abbey inspired office. Make your choices for your public funding. You have to live by the rules that youre fighting for up there in d. C. Once people smell hypocrisy, you have a real problem. Clinton has been hit for her private jet travel. There is a whole raft of questions about funding the clintons may have gotten or questionable folks they may have entertained and courted as part of cgi, or that bill may have. That question of draining the swatch and having politicians and leaders who are transparent with their funds is a really big issue for 2016 and for the clintons in particular. It is. Everything she has done with this traveling and her involvement with cgi has been above board and legal. It doesnt look good. The fact she and her husband after what they went through when he was president and what she went through trying to become a senator during her first election you would think they would be the smartest ones on the hill in washington. Stay away from all the stuff that looks a little sketchy. Even if it is legal, youre going to get banged for. People like aaron schock should know people are going to notice. This is a time where this doesnt fly anymore. Chris christie, theres reports in the New York Times about his lavish travel habits. The fact hes being flown around the world by King Abdullah staying in lavish multi thousand dollar a night hotel rooms. Bob mcdonald, the former governor of virginia you see a pattern when you have a lawmaker or a Public Servant with a taste for luxury and wont bankroll it for themselves. It is a recipe for a disaster. It can grow from something very small like pheasant feathers and then bob mcdonald with federal bribery accounts. That happens. Tons of animals stapled to the walls in his house. And he has shot most of them himsel himself. If youre trying to take campaign funds, it is not okay. He has done something fabulous. I think it is a gorgeous office. It looks pretty good. Dont be surprised when the rest of us notice. Aaron schock made me think twice about painting the walls of my office bright red. Investigative reporting at its best. Coming up the freshman republican congressman who used to be the governor of South Carolina mark sanford, joins me just ahead. Its no secret and i have publicly stated that i have deep reservations and in many instances direct oppositions to many changes that were going to review here today for the simple reason i believe they will not be effective at bringing about the sort of political opening on the island of cuba that all of us desire for the cuban people. Senator marco rubio was not happy yesterday, but the white house is picking up allies. Jeff flake has introduced a bill to lift the ban on American Travel to cuba and current republican representative mark sanford is cosponsoring a companion bill in the house. They have support. 60 of the americans support ending the economic embargo against cuba. Joining me now is mark sanford. Thanks for joining me. It is nice to be able to talk about something where there is some bipartisan agreement. What do you say to folks in your own party, including marco rubio, who are not in support of this lifting in embargo . He has called the new cuban policy a concession to tirrany. What we have had in place here is a strategy for 50 years that hasnt worked. This is about american rights. Our Founding Fathers promised life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But a big right within that basket of rights is the ability to travel, to come and go as you please. Of all the Different Countries on the globe, theres one you cant travel to presently and thats cuba. You could travel to north korea, syria, iran. A whole host of countries that dont have americas best interests at heart, but theres no prohibition traveling to those places. This is about american liberty among other things. Given marco rubio and his roots and he has preeminent voice on issues of immigration im not against him. Jeff flake is not against him. We are simply about recognizing the fact that what we can do is be consistent as we are right now with regard to an american right and that is the fundamental right of americans to travel. Unlike the former soviet union where you had to get papers to travel one place to another, why should we allow that impediment on American Travel . Especially to a place thats a few hundred miles off our coast. There are no current accounts out there saying cuba is some monsterrous threat to united states. You mentioned at the top of this segment that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. The house voted to repeal the Affordable Care act. How is that not the definition of insanity . Previous attempts whether you like it or dislike it had been blocked from the senate side. For the senate to have a debate the house needed to send a bill over there. You had a bunch of new freshmen that hadnt taken a vote on that issue. That debate went quickly out the window. You see this as a rite of passage, the vote to repeal the aca, yes . Ill let you define it however youd like. Part of the subject of cuba brings up the subject of immigration. Are you confident that something will be resolved before february 27th . Something is going to get resolved. We dont know exactly what that looks like. Thats where there is inconsistent from a republican standpoint on for instance the cuba issue. We dont want the president to act unilaterally. He has with cuba. We have house and senate bills that address a fundamental right. I think thats the right way to address it. On the issue coming up here in this month with regard to immigration, a lot of people are very upset that the president took unilateral action. I think congress as it should is going to come up with whatever its answer may be, but it is the proper issue. Heres an idea. Lets take a vote. Lets line up cosponsorships on that idea accordingly. I have to ask you one more question that may be slightly further afield from cuba. Go ahead. We have been talking a lot about Aaron Schocks office and the decor. Do you have pheasant feathers in your office and what do you think about the news about Aaron Schocks downton inspired interior design . I think there is a tendency within the media, with all due respect, to try somebody before all the facts out there. We ought to wait and see all the facts in regard to what he was deciding on and not deciding on. Every member has the prerogative to dress their office up as they like. Aaron is a good guy. The right to rise, that was the theme of his speech. Jeb promised a new vision with details yet to come. He wants to raise incomes by ensuring Economic Freedoms for americans. Bush had some harsh words for the government. Our nation has always valued such Economic Freedom because in Economic Freedom
